Park Project Updates
welcoming spaces and remarkable experiences
OUR MISSION To create community by
exceeding expectations
in design, maintenance, operations and programming with a commitment to lead as a team with uncompromising integrity. These statements were adopted this summer and developed based on the priorities identified by our staff and feedback from residents. We look forward to bringing them to life every day, creating welcoming spaces and remarkable experiences for residents to Gather, Grow, Preserve and Play every day.
GERTIE BARRETT PARK Construction began this Summer on Gertie Barrett Park, a new neighborhood park to serve residents in the northwest quadrant of Mansfield. The property, located off Gertie Barrett Road near Business 287/ Main Street and Garretson Lane, was purchased years ago to serve as future parkland and was the highest priority project in this quadrant in the 2020 Parks and Recreation Master Plan. In May 2021, Mansfield City Council allocated funding to develop this park and bring residents much-needed space and amenities. Work is expected to take 6-9 months and be completed this Winter.
MCCLENDON PARK WEST McClendon Park West was closed in July as work continues on some exciting renovations. The existing restroom and basketball courts are being removed and replaced with a splash pad, new restroom building and expanded parking area. The playground, which was replaced in 2016, will remain intact, along with the covered pavilion, trees and most sidewalks. Picnic areas will be refreshed with new tables. Due to the expansive nature of the work to be done, the entire park will be closed for the duration of this phase, which is expected to last through the end of the year with the project completed this Winter.
KATHERINE ROSE MEMORIAL PARK In 2021, the City Council allotted $1.5 million to replace the playground at Rose, one of the city’s most loved parks. In order to make the most efficient use of the space, planners began began a master plan process to create an overall plan for not only all of the land and amenities in Katherine Rose Memorial Park, but also Hardy Allmon Soccer Complex, located directly across Walnut Creek Drive and connected via the linear trail. Using input gathered this summer in public meetings, focus groups and an online survey, designers are creating an overall park master plan, which will be shared with residents and City Council this fall.
Find out more on these and other park projects on our website, mansfieldparks. com, or scan this code to go directly to the project update page.
100 Hours of PLAY This summer, hundreds of Mansfield families took our first-annual 100 Hours of PLAY challenge, committing to play outside for at least 100 hours from May 27 to August 4. Not only did Mansfield kiddos take the challenge, they’ve blown it out of the water! We’ve watched you go for walks, play with chalk, take a trip or just have a backyard picnic...so many creative ways to spend more time outside together and away from screens. The challenge included weekly PLAYdates in the park, with rotating activities like fishing, chess, pickleball and even storytime at the splash pad. Final play totals are still being tabulated, but collectively you’ve logged thousands of hours, with most families reaching (and far exceeding!) the goal. We’re so proud to have been a part of this summer to remember, and can’t wait to do it again next year. Of course, we might have to raise the stakes since Mansfield clearly loves to PLAY!
LET’S BE FRIENDS! Follow us on Facebook and Instagram for the latest news & events, behind the scenes scoop and fun games & contests
