Mansfield Parks and Recreation Earns CAPRA Accreditation Mansfield Parks and Recreation has joined the ranks of elite park and recreation agencies across the country by earning accreditation through the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA) and the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). This distinguished accomplishment was awarded in October as part of the 2023 NRPA Annual Conference in Dallas.

“CAPRA Accreditation means our commitment to operating with uncompromising integrity and exceeding expectations has placed Mansfield Parks and Recreation among the best agencies in the country, ensuring our guests always receive the highest standards of welcoming spaces and remarkable experiences,” said Matt Young, Executive Director of Community Services. “Through best practices and accountability established by the accreditation process, we have a framework for the future of how we will create community as we gather, grow, preserve and play.”

CAPRA accreditation is the only national accreditation for park and recreation agencies, and is a measure of an agency’s overall quality of operation, management and service to the community. This mark of distinction indicates that an agency has met rigorous standards related to the management and administration of lands, facilities, resources, programs, safety and services. Currently, there are only 193 CAPRA-accredited agencies, representing less than 1% of the more than 23,000 parks and recreation departments nationwide. Mansfield Parks and Recreation has been working towards accreditation since 2020. As part of the accreditation process, the department was required to demonstrate compliance with 154 recognized standards and document all policies and procedures. The standards range from maintenance procedures and planning guidelines to financial transparency and community outreach plans. Often the process helps identify efficiencies and heighten areas of accountability, all of which translate into higher quality service and operation to benefit the community. The process for accreditation involves a formal application, self-assessment, a site visit by a team of trained visitors and a hearing with the Commission to grant accreditation. Going forward, Mansfield Parks and Recreation must uphold the standards by submitting an annual report and must apply for re-accreditation in five years. 3

PARKS & REC NEWS 6

PARK RENTAL UPDATES We’re always trying to give you a more remarkable experience in our parks, programs and events, and 2024 brings some changes to our pavilion rentals to do exactly that! Starting Dec. 1, all park pavilions will be rented in halfday or full-day blocks instead of hourly. This structure gives you more flexibility in your setup and cleanup time, rather than being rushed to wrap up before another party arrives, and is a better hourly rate for a more cost-effective celebration. Even better, MAC membership is no longer required for renting pavilions or MAC rooms, eliminating another cost and giving you even more reasons to celebrate! See all the membership and rental details on page 22, or call/text the MAC at (817) 728-3680 for additional questions.

project updates Your favorite parks are only getting bigger and better in 2024! KATHERINE ROSE MEMORIAL PARK Construction began in Winter 2023 on Phase 1 of the Rose Park master plan, primarily focused on the new parking lot/entry drive and infrastructure changes. Phase 2, which includes the large, inclusive playground and new restrooms, is under design and should begin construction as the parking lot is complete.

PRELIMINARY CONCEPT

The park and existing lot should remain open throughout the project, but some amenities, most notably basketball and volleyball, will be closed and/or removed. New courts will be added at the current Hardy Allmon park in a future phase. MICHAEL L. SKINNER SPORTS COMPLEX Get ready to play ball in style! Work is wrapping up this spring on over $1.2 million in upgrades to Skinner Sports Complex, including new and/or realigned fencing, a stunning new entryway with some exciting special touches you have to see to believe, and a new restroom and concession building. This is the first major update to the complex, which opened in 1996, and should make some future World Series athletes very happy! Look for similar, though smaller-scale, improvements to James McKnight Park East softball fields later in 2024. WALNUT CREEK LINEAR TRAIL Construction should begin this year on the linear trail expansion from its current trailhead at Cannon/Carlin Roads to the entrance of Elmer W. Oliver Nature Park, which includes a safe pedestrian crossing under Matlock Road. Design plans are now underway on an approximately 1-mile segment heading west from Town Park to Mans Best Field Dog Park. That project, along with other updates at the dog park, should be finalized later this year with more details to come. JAMES MCKNIGHT PARK WEST Planning and public engagement meetings began in Winter 2023-24 for upgrades to McKnight Park West, made possibly by a $750,000 grant from Texas Parks and Wildlife and matching funds from Mansfield’s half-cent sales tax funds. The project includes a playground, looped trail with exercise stations, and the city’s first disc golf course. Designs will be finalized based on the input received, with construction to proceed later in the year.
