Mary Feeney

Recognized for

Character

Leadership Story: I nominate Dr. Feeney for being such an amazing and inspiring teacher! I've known her for 2 years and each year she has always been there helping me with every problem I bring to her desk. If I need help or just want someone to talk to she'll make time to see me! If I could describe her personality in one word I would say butterflies, she is always a burst of laughter and smiles!

Nicolle Mayo

Recognized for

Character

Leadership Story: It takes an amazing individual to teach a classroom full of students, but it takes an extraordinary individual to change lives when class is over. Dr. Mayo is one of those extraordinary individuals. She is patient, passionate about what she does, and has the desire to see her students succeed. Dr. Mayo not only opens her door for students who have questions about textbook information, she also opens her door for students who have questions about life. She listens without judgement, guides without giving all the answers and allows students to learn on their own, and encourages students to find the best version of themselves. She pushes students to open their minds to all the possibilities and to live without limitations. She opens up about her own life and through that has taught me one of life's greatest lessons: "vulnerability is bravery."

Tyler Copp

Recognized for

Character

Leadership Story: Tyler Copp exhibits integrity in all his many functions on campus. His demeanor is one of Clark Kent (mildmanner reporter,) until he hears a cry for help. Then you see Tyler jump into action, using his exemplary work ethic--reliable and meticulous--performing a large project with a single bound (getting it right the first time!) In his serious work-study performance, Tyler maintains his respectful attitude, working harmoniously with others. As a Mountie Ambassador, he provides tours to prospective students, modeling the greatest character of a Mountie.

Marquise Isaac-Rivers Recognized for

Character

Leadership Story: Marquise is a man of distinction, empathy, unswaying integrity, perseverance, and dauntless courage. Since knowing him, he has been a great asset to our MU community. Often times putting others before himself, Marquise is a friend to many, but a mentor and role model to many more. He strives to make the student body unified and our University a better place. He puts himself in positions so that he can be a voice for underrepresented students. While others may stray away from and not want to discuss uncomfortable topics like racism, misogyny, homophobia, and police brutality, he has already started the conversation. He recognizes that ignorance is the root of many issues, therefore, through these conversations, he educates everyone around him. His continuous hard work, uplifting spirit, and sense of responsibility for others makes him deserving of this honor.

Ana Joswick

Recognized for

Character

Leadership Story: Two years ago Ana was struggling with disappointment due to leaving the swim team. The loss of her role as a student athlete really hit Ana hard. Over the last year Ana has found new purpose and grown out of her experiences. She’s lost weight, gained new friends and has a new outlook on life. Ana’s growth is a true show of character. Ana is hoping to join the military upon graduation and with her hard work and dedication meeting the physical fitness requirements will be a piece of cake. Ana truly grew from adversity and her new positive attitude is a perfect example of strength of character and a great example of Mansfield’s Creed.

Dylan Krall

Recognized for

Character

Leadership Story: No matter what you can always count on this individual, whether it be from a student or a faculty member’s point of view, Dylan goes above and beyond to do whatever is needed. Over the course of his collegiate career he has served as the President of the Nerf and Horn club as well as held many other leadership positions such as sections leader in various ensembles. There is no doubt in my mind that when Dylan leaves the university we will be losing a great leader.

Thomas Moore

Recognized for

Character

Leadership Story: Thomas Moore is a living example of being successful as a student athlete both on and off the court. He leads our men's basketball program in scoring and assists, but Thomas's biggest assist comes off the court where he has donated more than 25 hours of his time since December 1st to local non- profit organizations including Partners in Progress and the SPCA animal care sanctuary.

Joseph Roeger

Recognized for

Character

Leadership Story: Joseph Roeger is a fine human being who has inspired me to reach new limits as a student. Whether it be with his humor or his sparkling personality he always has a smile on his face and he has helped me on numerous difficult occasions. Joe deserves this award for his reaching out to many people who are shy. This shows the Mansfield spirit for including those who otherwise would've been excluded.

She shows empathy towards the person, this making her a great Psychology major.

Leadership Story: Tristin is such an excellent example of character! She is always there to help anyone who needs it. I can't count the number of times she has been there to help me no matter what she has going on or how busy she is! She always stands up for those that cannot do so for themselves and does so with a smile! She very much deserves this award!

Kelsey Carlsen

Recognized for

Character

Leadership Story: Kelsey is a senior graduating in May with a degree in Environmental Science. She is a captain of the track and field team. Though she is a student-athlete, she is very dedicated both on the field, as a javelin thrower, and in the classroom. She continues to have the highest GPA in her major. Kelsey has overcome many challenges within the last year, but she is always hopeful and thankful to the people she has had help her along the way.

Michael Bostwick

Recognized for

Character

Leadership Story: Michael is a senior studying Criminal Justice, planning on becoming a police officer. He has been involved in many different things at Mansfield, and loves to show his support at events. Outside of school, he does his best to work and prepare himself for the real world. At times he has been able to balance work and school work, while excelling at both. Michael is a very genuine and hard-working gentleman; he deserves to be recognized for his hard work.

Gerry Luxenberger Recognized for

Character

Leadership Story: Gerry applied for a student worker position within the Facilities Dept. with the intent of assisting with projects that would enhance the campus appearance and sustainability not knowing that his unselfish desire to contribute would leave a lasting impression. Gerry's work ethic, attitude and willingness to learn is a perfect example of the Student Culture at Mansfield University. Gerry will be leaving us with the May Commencement and the Facilities Dept. would like to express sincere appreciation and gratitude for his contributions with assisting on projects.

Karri Verno

Recognized for

Character

Leadership Story: Dr. Verno, especially in the Fall of 2015, demonstrated leadership and character. When many think of the word leadership, they think of someone in charge of something, or "the head" of an organization. Dr. Verno is not that kind of leader. She goes beyond traditional definitions with her genuine and honest show of character last year with the passing of her mother. Unlike many professors, when going through a difficult time, Dr. Verno did not "pretend" it did not happen. Instead of shutting her students out, she let them in and allowed it to be a learning experience for her students (especially in her Death and Dying class). Dr. Verno chose to use her vulnerability in this situation not as a setback or weakness, but as an adornment to her already amiable characteristics. This exemplifies leadership because Dr. Verno took a step out, in courage, hoping to someday help her students cope with death, and see it does not need to keep you from living life to its fullest. She did not take this task lightly, nor did she take the traditional route, rather she chose to allow her vulnerability to create a connection and demonstrate her strong character to her students and other staff members. Dr. Verno was a leader, even when her personal leader--her mother--was no longer with her.

Zachary Rossetti

Recognized for

Character

Leadership Story: Zachary showed his exemplary character through his attitude in a very tough time for him during the past fall semester. A close friend of his from high school passed away from cancer, and the blow was brutal. However, he kept his head up. When he wanted to run and hide from his emotions, he stuck out the trial and did everything he could to help others grieving for the loss, as well as himself. His leadership and his character allowed him to hold on when all seemed to be lost and be there for others in the same situation as himself.

Alexis Rathburn

Recognized for

Character

Leadership Story: Alexis Rathburn is one of the truest forms of the Character Creed that Mansfield University emphasizes. As captain of the Mansfield University cheerleading squad, she inspires, motivates, and encourages students to be the best possible version of themselves. Not only does she juggle the pressures and challenges of being captain, she's also dedicated to her sorority, Alpha Sigma Tau. Although dedicated to her studies and extra-curricular activities, she makes up a large part of the character creed, there is so much more that her personality encompasses. Alexis is, by far, one of the hardest working, kindest people I know and displays the utmost professionalism in all cases where she needs to. Not only do I find her incredibly trustworthy, I also find her as one of my most respected role models and hope I can take some of her traits and apply them to my future career goals.

Jill Scott

Recognized for

Character

Leadership Story: Jill Scott is always helpful and positive, willing to help any students with their issues. She's a hard worker and helps to ensure the Education Department is a well-oiled machine! Her attitude and work ethic are an inspiration and we're lucky to have her.

Codey Weeks

Leadership Story: Codey Week's is a Trio work-study student who exemplifies true character. Codey has had to deal with a lot misfortune with illness throughout his years attending MU. He still comes into work with a smile on his face even in his pain and is giving out hugs and positive notes of hope to anyone who is having a bad day from students to staff. He cares about the Trio program by sharing adventures, programs and assists other students in giving them the resources to help them with their academic and personal needs. I am thankful to know someone like Codey who never gives up and battles his hurdles while giving to others daily.

She has helped develop and train numerous Ambassadors throughout the years. She goes above and beyond to make every campus visit memorable for our guests. Hayley is extremely knowledgeable about the campus and strives to make the Ambassador team the best they possibly can be. Hayley has a strong work ethic and has devoted much time and energy to the Mountie Ambassadors.

Hayley Kotulka

Recognized for

Character

Leadership Story: Being the strong leader that Hayley is, she is a trainer of Mountie Ambassadors. Having served since her first semester at MU, she is a role model on campus, not only to new Ambassadors, but to anyone with whom she interacts. As a work-study student in Admissions, she repeatedly proves her worth by being reliable, respectful, congenial, and considerate of others. In diligently undertaking her tasks, she’s found the delicate balance of hard work and fun, making her the perfect team player. She gets the job done with competence and wit, leaving everyone pleased and smiling. When asking others about Hayley, similar words were spoken: strong work ethic and pleasant to be around. Hayley’s proportional combination of dedication and congeniality make her an excellent representation of the Creed’s commitment to “Character,” where others are inspired to emulate her persona.

Deb Solfaro

Recognized for

Character

Leadership Story: In the fall of 2015, Phi Beta Sigma held a unity march on campus to give everyone a chance to come together and take a stand for a cause that is meaningful to them. Ms Solfaro took it upon herself to not only come out and support, but to make sure that she encouraged many of her athletes and coaches to do the same. She was a strong supporter of our student body and is a strong advocate for social reform. Deb is a true example of what someone with Mansfield Character looks like.

Heather McCarthy

Recognized for

Character

Leadership Story: Any one of the aspects of the Creed could apply to Student Life Graduate Assistant Heather McCarthy. I chose Character since that is what Heather displays each and every day personally and professionally. As a fellow-student, Heather genuinely cares about other students and their success here at Mansfield University. She is being extremely proactive in further developing the IMPACT Mentoring Program for volunteer Mentors and Mentees. Heather is extremely bright, professional, friendly, and absolutely a go-getter. We are beyond fortunate to have her working within the Office of Student Retention within the division of Student Life. I wish she could stay on board here forever! Heather is having much success currently, and her future is very bright!

Donna Miner

Recognized for

Character

Leadership Story: Donna Miner exemplifies all aspects of the Mansfield University Creed. I specifically chose Character because of Donna's high level of integrity both as a person and as a working professional. As defined under this particular aspect of the Creed, all of Donna's actions are honest and respectful. She takes responsibility for her actions and she is considerate of the impact on herself and others. Donna is the most positive person I know at work and outside of the workplace. Her wonderful outlook is infectious to others around her - myself and others are grateful for the opportunity to know and work with Donna. She can be counted on to complete impeccable work for those inside and outside of our Student Life division. As noted by Oprah Winfrey "Real integrity is doing the right thing, knowing that nobody's going to know whether you did it or not." Real integrity is not a standard feature, someone must have it in their heart and soul. Donna Miner has true Character and our Mansfield University students, staff, and faculty are benefiting more than any will ever fully realize.

Amanda Sanko

Recognized for

Character

Leadership Story: Everyday Amanda comes into work with the notion that she and her students will make Mansfield University a better place. Whether she is home at work, she is always looking for ways to make learning fun, the campus friendlier, and provide a home away from home to her students. Even on her worst days, she makes the library one of the best places to be. If we ever need her, she makes time to hear our concerns and give advice. She treats us like the children she never had

Dia Carleton

Recognized for

Character

Leadership Story: Dia Carleton is a bright, friendly, hardworking person who is creative, compassionate, and truly caring and understanding of others. She is spirited and reverently reserved which shows her adventurous side and humbleness driven by optimism and faith. As a friend, employee, and colleague Dia has shown me her loyalty, reliability, integrity, helpfulness, and generosity to our university community. We are very fortunate to have a personable, authentic, self-disciplined colleague here at MU with a Juris Doctor practicing best practices in HR.

Ruth Hermansen

Recognized for

Character

Leadership Story: Ruth is one of those people who sees the good in everyone, no matter what. She maintains a positive attitude, no matter what. We are fortunate to have her working with student retention.

Danielle Stafford

Recognized for

Character

Leadership Story: Danielle Stafford is an amazing young woman who did not let flawed policies get in the way of her dreams. She had a long and trying journey; but she did it! She never gave up! She is an inspiration in my life and shared a quote that I will always treasure: “Surround yourself with the dreamers and the doers, the believers and the thinkers, but most of all surround yourself with those who see greatness within you, even when you don’t see it in yourself.”

Connie Hendricks

Recognized for

Character

Leadership Story: In preparation for our Winter celebration and Unity Day, Mrs. Hendricks worked tirelessly to ensure its success. It took her and her team almost a month to complete the task of decorating campus. In decorating campus, students felt that the campus had more of a homely atmosphere. Mrs. Hendricks recognizes that being away from home during the holidays can be a bit uneasy for students, so she does her best to ensure that students fell at ease and not homesick. Her character is shown through the work she has done for and the dedication she has to the student body. She cares a lot for MU students and it shows as she decorates campus, stops to talk to us, invites us to the house, hands out her delicious cookies, and way more -- and for that, she is deserving of this honor.

Gayle Thompson

Recognized for

Character

Leadership Story: Gayle Thompson exemplifies the character promoted in the Mansfield Creed. She is a conscientious and hard-working employee who values integrity and personal relationships. As the secretary for several programs, including social work, criminal justice, political science, history, and philosophy, her office is the nexus of Pinecrest Manor, and she is often inundated with urgent requests from needy professors. Nevertheless, she always takes the time to lend a compassionate and sympathetic ear to those who are distressed. She goes above and beyond her responsibilities – often in subtle ways – to make Mansfield University a better place. Whether it is leaving snacks out for coworkers to nibble on, decorating a professor’s office door after a significant achievement, or contributing money to a student scholarship, Gayle Thompson positively impacts our University in more ways than she realizes.

Herbert Kinney

Recognized for

Character

Leadership Story: I have had over 3500 students in my career. Mr. Herbert Kinney would be in the top 5 in character, integrity and enthusiasm. As a student in my Science Methods class, Herb was so enthusiastic and engaged. He even planned a surprise field trip for us to the planetarium. Herb's enthusiasm was contagious and he was a wonderful role model. This year, when I asked my students why they wanted to become a teacher, a student told me it was because she had a fantastic teacher who inspired her: "Mr. Herbert Kinney!"

Matt Tamanosky

Recognized for

Character

Leadership Story: Matt is the true definition of selfless leadership. As a freshman on the men’s basketball team last season, Matt played behind two of the best forwards in program history. In that year he made just 16 appearances and averaged 4.9 minutes off the bench, but when Matt got into the game he gave it his all. Hard work and determination during the offseason and in preseason transformed Matt from a player who earned just a few minutes of the bench each game to a starter and dominant force in the paint. As a sophomore, Matt has made starts in 20 games for the Mountaineers and leads the conference in field goal percentage, shooting 61.3%. Matt is a blue collar athlete who is determined to help his team win in any way possible without seeking personal glory. He is a strong representation of the character valued at Mansfield University.

Chuck Colby

Recognized for

Character

Leadership Story: Chuck, you are an exemplary leader of the Housing, Dining & Campus Life department. Through your actions you demonstrate that your team is a priority and you role model appropriate behaviors. You are tirelessly dedicated to Mansfield University, your team, and students as I have personally witnessed you staying late many nights and arriving early many mornings. Regardless of how busy you are, you have always made time for others and provided them with the attention that they need. You never act without taking time to reflect upon the impact that your decisions will have on others while always practicing ownership and maintaining your integrity. You are always teaching others and I know that I have learned a great deal from you as a leader and equally as much, if not more, as a person.

Tyree Andrews

Recognized for

Character

Leadership Story: Tyree is a mentor to many students. He is always willing to lend a helping hand to students who are in need of one. As a freshman, Tyree has gotten involved in a lot of student organizations, many of which he was named “Most Dedicated Member”. Tyree was selected to become a mentor for the Gateway Program – as he was once a Gateway mentee. He wants to give to incoming students what he received from his mentors – inspiration, guidance, and the gratification of knowing that someone else cares. Now, as a sophomore, Tyree has taken on the task of being SGA’s Director of Public Relations. Tyree works hard and diligently to improve the student life experience.

Alexis Rathburn

Recognized for

Service

Leadership Story: Alexis Rathburn has an amazing gift for leadership. She is captain of the Mansfield University Cheerleaders, who my wife, Yvonne, and I advise. Alexis is organized, demanding, always strives for perfection, notices and corrects the most tiny flaws, but also serves as a role model for the other squad members. Especially effective has been her bonding activities, both during and outside practice. I am so proud of you, Alexis! Keep up the good work!

Recognized for

Service

Leadership Story: Craig Rose is an outstanding leader. He has been President of both the Biology and Photography Clubs whom I advise. Craig is extremely organized, uses his resources and associates to maximize production, and efficiency, along with respecting all members with their input and contributions. We will certainly miss Craig when he graduates soon, but the world will gain an incredible physician. I have been honored to have you as a student, work with you in extracurricular activities, and I would gladly seek your medical services in the future! Thanks, Craig, for everything!

Jessica Towey

Recognized for

Service

Leadership Story: Jessica Towey is one of my student workers. She began a year ago as a volunteer. I challenged my 80 or so Zoology students to get involved, and she was the only one who took advantage of the offer. Jess has been incredible in all aspects of the position. She cheerfully reports faithfully at the designated times, never complains about even the most gosh-awful tasks, and consistently asks for more and more to do. As an outstanding and very creative artist, Jess has made signs labelling everything in my lab! It is now the envy of all other faculty members. I am looking forward to working with her for another couple of years! Thanks, Jess, for everything!

Angela Blackwell

Recognized for

Service

Leadership Story: I met Angela Blackwell at the beginning of the Fall Semester as an assigned advisee and now she is a student in my class. In our advising discussions, service was mentioned, and Angie jumped at the chance to volunteer for student worker activities. Over the past several weeks, Angie has faithfully and cheerfully assisted with searches for equipment and lab setup. Hopefully she can be worked into a paying position in the near future. Thank you, Angie! It is great knowing you and working with you!

Samantha Sheaffer Recognized for

Service

Leadership Story: Samantha Sheaffer is such an incredible person! I am so fortunate to have been assigned as her academic advisor. Somehow in our conversations, we discussed getting involved on campus. Sami eagerly took a position as a volunteer student worker for me last Fall. She has accepted all challenges while maintain a smile on her face. Her work is accomplished promptly, skillfully and correctly! Sami wants to learn and do the best that she can no matter the task. My plans are to have Sami for many semesters to come not only as a volunteer helper, but a paid student worker, advisee, and student! Thank you so much, Sami, for all that you do to help make my life run more smoothly!

Jenna Townsend

Recognized for

Service

Leadership Story: With Jenna Townsend, “oh what a difference a semester makes. When Jenna joined the Mountie Ambassadors (due to her inherent desire to help others), she was quiet and shy. But her next semester, she returned as a strong leader; still quiet, but eager to engage in service wherever needed. Her quiet demeanor allows her to observe others in order to provide service in the most suitable manner for each situation and each individual. She provides the best experience for our visiting guests; prospective students who comment on her humble demeanor, but powerful respect and dedication to the university. Fortunately for others, Jenna serves beyond the campus community through her vocal abilities. The people of her church are one such group of beneficiaries. Through her songs, she raises spirits and inspires others. Jenna serves her church in other ways as well by working at the food pantry, vacation bible school, and as a camp counselor for children. She has the gifts of music, humility, and respect, and selflessly shares them with others.

Rochelle Clark

Recognized for

Service

Leadership Story: Shelly Clark worked with other dietetics faculty members to generate a 318 page ten-year accreditation self-study report during the fall semester. Her willingness to work on days when she was not scheduled to work and to answer emails on the weekends made the process go much more smoothly.

Mary Feeney

Recognized for

Service

Leadership Story: Mary served on the Dietetics ten-year accreditation self-study report team. She helped with whatever needed to be done at the time. Because of Mary's work on the project, the 318 page document was submitted on time.

Jannis Floyd

Recognized for

Service

Leadership Story: Dr. Jannis Floyd is a wonderful example of leadership in all four Creed categories; however, her leadership is most evident in the area of Service. Although there are countless examples of the way in which Dr. Floyd serves her department, her willingness to act as the Education and Special Education Department Chair and the Teacher Education Council Chair simultaneously is evidence of her service commitment. As a result of her leadership, Mansfield University’s Teacher Education Unit is embracing challenges and rebuilding its mark of distinction, a distinction that began in 1927 when Mansfield became the first Pennsylvania institution of higher education to be designated as a state teachers’ college.

Amanda Sivco

Recognized for

Service

Leadership Story: Amanda Sivco embodies what it means to be a leader. Despite being involved with a number of organizations including the orchestra, Kappa Kappa Psi, Mountie Ambassadors and working at Einstein’s, Amanda still finds time to work at both the Kelchner Fitness Center rock climbing wall and ropes course. Her leadership abilities include more than just being involved. Amanda is dedicated, reliable, the first to volunteer to help, and has grown in a way that her peers regularly look up to her for advice. Not only has her model of leadership thrived at Kelchner Fitness Center, but it has gone above and beyond in helping make the university the best it can be. I believe Amanda would be an excellent candidate for the Leadership Award for Service.

Amanda Sivco

Recognized for

Service

Leadership Story: Amanda Sivco certainly goes above and beyond in serving her campus community. If there was an award for MU Spirit, it would go to Amanda, hands down. Wearing her MU scarf, she volunteers as a Mountie Ambassador, always willing to brave the elements to show prospective students the campus. She infuses their experience with her sincere love of the university and of others. In that care for others, she also volunteers extra hours at the fitness center, providing a role model of leadership. Amanda provides the same reliable service as a work study in the Admissions office, always eager to fill a need in the office. Equally involved in music, she touches many people-faculty, staff, and students-all throughout campus with her desire to serve others.

Beth McClure

Recognized for

Service

Leadership Story: “Don’t ever get rid of Beth McClure!” was a memorable response that surfaced in the semester’s survey data. This comment was written in response to Beth’s excellent service to the many teachers she supports in the field. In addition to maintaining typical support in field operations, Beth finds ways to meet individual teacher needs and to consequently foster strong relationships. One particular incident comes to mind. A Mansfield University alumnus was disappointed to learn that the Campus Bookstore would be closed on the day MU hosted an in-service program for cooperating teachers. Recognizing that this teacher was saddened, Beth quietly found a way to facilitate the need. The cooperating teacher was beyond elated when she sat down at the campus workshop to find the very MU sweatshirt that she wanted starring back at her. Moments like this one are priceless. Mansfield University partnerships grow as a result of Beth’s commitment to service.

Ben Auger

Recognized for

Service

Leadership Story: I would point to one specific instance of Ben acting in service of others rather than self, but I fear that this would detract how deeply he actually embodies this aspect of the Creed. Service is not a highlight reel or an act, it is a marathon of will. I work a few feet away from Ben, and I have spent more time with him than with any other person over the last 6 months, including my children, my students, my teammates, or my family. He doesn't begrudgingly or hesitantly decide that he is obligated to serve others - he delights in it. He walks faster for others than he does for himself. He spends money to make people's days better. He writes inspiring notes to students or buys gift cards for them and experiences joy at the idea that it might have improved their day. He has walked students to and from buildings in the rain, carrying an umbrella for them, and then stood outside giving away umbrellas to strangers, asking only that they "use the umbrella to keep someone else dry". He goes above and beyond both professionally and personally for those he encounters at Mansfield University.Ben suffers from incurable service. He is a pathological servant. He is addicted to serving. And his coworkers and the students of Mansfield University are better for it. It is not a show, or an act, or something he does because it's going to be noticed, or appreciated, or reciprocated. It is an act of service for the sake of service, and I have immense respect for him as a result.

Tiffany Welch

Recognized for

Service

Leadership Story: Dr. Welch will give up her time, money, support, and sleep in order to help her students have a better learning experience. She takes time away from her own family to take care of us and she treats us as if we are her family!

Tiffany Welch

Recognized for

Service

Leadership Story: This is one professor who will go above and beyond to make sure that your needs are being met. She makes sure that her required job description is done plus more. She has helped me so much and I am very appreciative. I am very thankful because if it wasn't for her my senior year would be horrible. I would like to see her continue being an amazing professor.

Tiffany Welch

Recognized for

Service

Leadership Story: Dr. Tiffany Welch has continually provided quality service to students by recognizing their strengths and helping the student build on them. She has always been considerate of the student's situation and has fully invested her time in energy into the social work program. Tiffany Welch

Recognized for

Service

Leadership Story: Tiffany's philosophy is to serve others and this award gives me the opportunity to show my appreciation for all she does to make our commencement ceremonies the very best they can be. Dr. Welch serves as a faculty marshal and has accepted this responsibility/challenge with the same positive attitude she approaches all tasks. The amount of time Tiffany puts into her role to ensure everything runs smoothly is extraordinary and when times get chaotic and crazy, she reminds us that our purpose is to serve students. Tiffany bestowed countless time and effort in ensuring our grads from across the nation left Mansfield with not only a grand, professional experience but also with a great impression of our university. This type of compassion is rare in this world but is indicative of Tiffany’s character and her commitment to our students. Dedicated. Determined. Dependable.

Denise Davy

Recognized for

Service

Leadership Story: I am a student at Mansfield university, and upon attending this university I ponder the idea of how campus life would be, and with my background I was very skeptical that I was going to be able to make . And of course Mansfield always proves me wrong. One person that has always made a huge impact through my academic years at Mansfield is Mrs. Denise and yes I am not privileged to reward her, but I just believe that she deserves this. You don't understand when you are down, and need someone to believe in you again, she expanded her role in her office by becoming like a motherly figure that I dreamt to have. For a student like myself, it is very difficult to focus on physiological needs and education at the same time. From parents not being there for you and someone whom recently met you to have so much faith in you. Mrs. Denise is phenomenal, she has outstanding character and I pray that God rewards her because no reward is notable enough for what she's done, just being there having hope for me. When you are at your worst depressed and you have someone to lift you up. All staff members have played a huge role but Mrs. Denise deserves it.

Denise Davy

Recognized for

Service

Leadership Story: Denise Davey is an extremely hard-working professional in Student Registration and Financial Services. She has more tasks on her plate than I can likely imagine... Yet, without fail, each and every time outreach to Denise is necessary in supporting a student, Denise resolves the issue. Not only does she assist the student, but she does so in a fast and polite manner. Denise is always helpful to the student and to the associated staff member. Every time I have reached out to her on behalf of a student-employee, the situation is solved. Denise is a huge factor in positive student retention. Mansfield University is extremely fortunate to have her on staff in supporting student success.

Michelle Howe

Recognized for

Service

Leadership Story: Michelle Howe is a student dedicated to the wellbeing of others. She is a tutor to her peers and had resources available with her for those who cannot afford those resources themselves. She does not just meet other students halfway in order to help them, she runs all the way just so she can find out how best to help and what is the greatest solution to someone's academic or personal problem.

Michelle Howe

Recognized for

Service

Leadership Story: Michelle is one of the most caring individuals at MU. She is a social work major who consistently goes above and beyond to ensure everyone is feeling great both mentally and physically. No one is more deserving of this award!

Aisha Mawusi

Recognized for

Service

Leadership Story: Aisha is always on time, shows up according to her scheduled shifts, and is very dependable. She is also a quick learner taking what is shown to her and often contributing further to the task. When Aisha is completed with one assignment, she moves right on to the next without hesitation and always asks for help when needed. She handles our customers very professionally and guides them through the printing process. Aisha is truly an asset to the Print Shop and Mansfield University.

Kiana Medley

Recognized for

Service

Leadership Story: What can I say? She’s my best friend, a feminist, and a strong woman. For some years now, she has been a Gateway mentor, giving advice and, in some nights, giving-up countless hours of her sleep for incoming high school students, who wish to be college students in the fall. Because of her hard-work and commit for academic excellence, she has pushed many students to bring the best out of themselves; including myself. She just wasn’t a mentor for many, but she’s also my role-model. Kiana Medley has played a pivotal role in my undergraduate career, doing things that weren’t required of her to do. Without her, I probably wouldn’t be Sigma man, which was my best decision as a freshmen. Moreover, she, along with others, have taught me how to be a more effective leader and communicator on campus. Her favorite line for every time I did something wrong was “Wow…” which eventually became irritating. On my worse days, and on days that I felt like a failure, she was the one who contacted me a lot unexpectedly, to see what I was doing or to see if I needed comfort. She’s a strong woman and most importantly, she is my best friend.

I refer to him as a man of sacrifices because for the past three years, he has been a Gateway mentor, helping incoming high school students with their transitioning process as new college students. With that, he has spent most of his summers in Mansfield, while everyone else was indulging themselves in fun summer activities elsewhere. Yes, he did receive monetary compensation, but just like any other work-study job here on campus, the pay wasn’t substantial. Furthermore, in the short time of my duration here at Mansfield University, Marquise Isaac- Rivers has helped me in so many ways. He has taught me how to be a more effective leader and communicator on campus, helping me to better understand how politics and the business world operates at Mansfield University. In fact, every time I did something wrong, one of his favorite lines was “That isn’t professional” because at the time, I lacked the necessary knowledge. Also, he made sure that I had transportation to get back and forth from Scranton, Pa, which saved not just myself, but also my mother, financially. He has truly exemplified the high ideals of the Mansfield creed, and the high ideals of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. He is a man of service and most importantly, he is a Sigma man.

It is rare to ever hear Emmie complain about schoolwork even though she has more of a "leg to stand on" than most students since she is also a mother. You would never know by observing Emmie that she goes home after classes to juggle homework as well as being single parent. Stephanie Richards Recognized for

Scholarship

Leadership Story: Stephanie Richards is absolutely incredible in so many different ways, that I have to stop at times to attempt to comprehend just how outstanding she really is. Steph is that “perfect student” who has an insatiable hunger for knowledge. She is the one student in class who is truly disappointed when the lecture or lab ends, because she always wants more and more. Steph has extremely lofty goals, but in her case completely reasonable and attainable, of earning a Ph.D. in Microbiology, working at the Centers for Disease Control, and curing world-wide diseases. The only time I have had to curb Steph’s enthusiasm is when she insisted on working with Ebola or any other deadly disease in our laboratories! I hope that she has not heard of Zika! Go Steph! Thanks for being my perfect student!

Her project, involving corals from Australia, in a study of biofluorescence, is at the cutting edge of Science and Technology. Yes, such projects are incredibly expensive, but Carly took the initiative to write proposals and receive research grants to fund the study. She will undoubtedly continue her work in a graduate school in the near future! Way to go, Carly, great being associated with you!

Ruth responds to crisis situations involving students in a gentle and caring way, which helps to maintain a CULTURE of student service and student success. Ms. Ruth Hermansen's dedication to a CULTURE of strong leadership and support to MU students is exemplary.

Renee Potter

Recognized for

Culture

Leadership Story: Renee was instrumental in organizing and assisting with the SUST program. Besides hosting 4 of the Chinese students over the holidays, she arranged all of the training and paperwork that needed to be completed by her church host families. Renee and her family spent time showing these students the area and immersing them in our American culture, as well as learning about their culture. This act portrays how Renee is dedicated to Scholarship, Culture and Service!

Dia Carleton

Recognized for

Culture

Leadership Story: The person I would like to nominate is Dia Carelton. After observing Dia for the past several years I have grown to appreciate not only the depth of her responsibilities, but the ways she is pulled in different directions on a daily basis. It takes a true leader to be able to do that. There is another side of Dia that others don’t always get to see; and that’s Dia outside her position as the “Executive Director, Employee and Leadership Services, Human Resources”. Dia has contributed to the wellbeing and support of our domestic and international students. It’s not uncommon to see Dia at an event put on by our students, or hiring them in her area to do an internship. Whether it’s seeing Dia and her nephew at a MISO Festival, or seeing pictures of her at the wedding of one of her student interns, Dia is making a difference in the lives of our students. Thank you Dia for appreciating Culture on our campus.
