A WORD FROM THE EDITOR Sport is fiercely important in small town, rural Ireland. Every town and village has a team and every boy and girl plays hurling and/or Gaelic football at school, but it’s senior hurling which generates the real passion and rivalry, particularly at county level competing for the national title at Croke Park, the headquarters of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). I still remember Galway winning the All-Ireland in 1980 and captain Joe Connolly’s acceptance speech is regarded as one of the best GAA moments ever. In an unscripted speech, Connolly claimed that day was like a spiritual re-awakening for a population that had been severely impacted by a famine in the 1800s and followed by mass emigration in the 1900s. He then passed the microphone to Galway player Joe McDonagh who solidified that day as being one of Galway’s best with a rendition of the song The West’s Awake. We celebrated for weeks, car horns blazing, flag waving… the sense of pride was palpable. It changed everything. On Monday, May 30 my little family and I went to see AFC Wimbledon play Plymouth Argyle in the League Two play-off final at Wembley. Daniel has supported Wimbledon FC since way back when and was one of many who objected to the Football Association’s decision to allow the team to be relocated to Milton Keynes in 2002, where they are now called Milton Keynes Dons. The fans formed AFC Wimbledon in 2003 and in its short history the club has been hugely successful. Having beaten Plymouth 2-0 they will play in League One with MK Dons next season. Close on 60,000 attended the Wembley game but the sense of togetherness and passion at the Wimbledon end took me back to 1980. Perhaps it’s the same at all games, but 30,000 fans singing “I can’t help falling in love with you” is right up there with McDonagh’s The West’s Awake and will stay with me for a long time. Belonging to something, being part of a community whether it’s local, regional or national, whether it’s sport or fundraising for the church roof, is profoundly satisfying – and good for the soul. Join in. You won’t regret it.

NEWS CAPEL’S GREATEST SHOW THREE MONTHS OF ROYAL CELEBRATIONS By David Thompson, chairman of The Queen’s 90th Birthday Celebrations Working Group Capel’s three months of celebrating Her Majesty’s 90th birthday began on a high note with the lighting of a beacon on April 21. It will end on a high note with the presentation of the single £90 prize to the winner of the quiz on the life of The Queen. Completed quiz forms should be returned for marking no later then Monday, July 11 to the addresses given on the forms. After the presentation there will be the draw for the 90-prize raffle. The first ticket stub out of the hat will win £90 cash, the second prize is a £50 MoT, the third £50 cash, the fourth six bottles of wine, the fifth a framed painting of Balmoral, the sixth a hand-carved wooden bowl. To create a bit of a mystery and excitement, the 84 prizes left will be numbered at random so that the winners will not know what prize they are going to receive. The 84 prizes are valued between £5 and £30 or more. Prizes include spirits, wine, restaurant and take-away meals, a rose bowl, vouchers of varied sorts and tickets to attractions. The Orchard Players will be putting on a splendid performance. The Birthday Book will makes its last appearance along with the photographic displays, portraits of The Queen by Capel’s Art for Fun Club and the wonderful six winning drawings of The Queen by Capel Primary School children. Where and when will this great show be on? Capel Village Hall from 7pm on Friday, July 15. Don’t miss it. It will be fun. Several events are being planned for early July and St Mary’s Church Breakfast Club is holding a royal-themed garden tea party on July 10. JUNE WAS A MONTH OF CELEBRATIONS The parish council’s Fun Day exhibition, which included the Birthday Book, photographic displays of the life of The Queen and The Queen in Suffolk, portraits of The Queen by Capel’s Art for Fun Club, and drawings and colourings-in by children from Capel Primary School attracted a lot of attention. The Methodist Church provided a full-English community breakfast on the green next to the church on June 11. The Birthday Book and displays were present and also at the Scarecrow Trail afternoon teas on June 11 and 12. Capel Community Church held a Special Service on the morning of June 12. The church was decorated with flags and bunting and had on display a wedding cake topped with a crown. The Birthday Book and all the displays were present. The Mums of the Twins’ Group signed the book on June 15. A service of celebration for The Queen’s 90th birthday was held in the Methodist Church on Sunday, June 12. The church was decorated with flags and bunting and the order of the service was The Servant Queen and the King she Serves, taken from a booklet of that title. The booklet was freely available. The service was led by clergy from Capel’s three churches. The Birthday Book and the displays were present. THE QUEEN’S 90th BIRTHDAY BOOK The Birthday Book is a beautiful creation with an embossed leather cover. The message on the cover is: Loyal 90th birthday wishes to Her Majesty The Queen from the people of Capel St Mary, Suffolk The book and the photographic and art displays have gone to every event of which I have been aware. People have signed at all the events they have attended and that gives an excellent picture of what the village offers its residents and what residents do for the village. It is a delight that a very large number of children, some very young, and young people have signed their names, many with added birthday greetings or messages. That demonstrates how genuine are their feelings towards Her Majesty. The Queen will surely like that.

NEWS CAPEL FUNDAY 2016 Wow, how lucky were we? After watching the weather forecast change all week we were delighted that the sun came out just in time for Funday to start at 1pm! So in came the crowds of people. We once again had lots of attractions on offer including Little Rovers, Kidz Kartz, zorb balls, chairoplanes, train rides, donkey rides and many independent stallholders. And new to this year was Gemma’s Farm with many animals that the children were able to stroke and hold. Unfortunately, we were unable to have the Yak 52 Aeroplane display this year due to a change in the Civil Aviation Authorities rules. Warrior Fire & Rescue, the First Responders and Whip Street Motors stepped in to provide a demonstration cutting someone free from a car. We welcomed back Tendring Dog Agility Group, Andy the Clown, Ipswich Hospital Community Choir, Zumba with Tess and CDC Street Dance who once again entertained everyone with their great displays. New this year were Ice Illusions Majorettes, Niki Taylor Dance and Ipswich Rock Choir. Admission to Funday was as always free, with some of the costs being covered by local businesses sponsoring our event. Many thanks go to our all our sponsors: Main Sponsors: T&L Banks, Bonfield Brothers and DMG Estate Agents Additional Sponsors: Capel Castles, Upstix Estate Agent, Capel Mushroom Farm, Turners Interiors, PWS Professional Wiring Services, Hadleigh Tyre Group and Ha’Penny Press Regular stall holders included the Women’s Institute, St Elizabeths Hospice, Capel Ladies, Capel Methodist Church and Orchard Players who we thank for their continued support. As always, we are really grateful to the many volunteers who give their time to assist. Their help made such a difference to the smooth running of the whole event and makes it possible for it to actually go ahead. Thank you to: Carolyn Love, Alan Marshall, Diane Bishop, Allen Harris Jr, Mike Gilson, Fiona Robinson, Marcia Robinson, Nathan Robinson and Bradley Gentry and to association and trust committee members Trevor Banks, Steve Bishop, John Webb, Allen Harris, Duncan Knight, Ian Love, Iain Bramhill, Sandra Bumphrey, Mandy Marshall, Julie Gentry, Stuart Harris and Richard Morgan. If I have forgotten anyone, I do apologise. We were very lucky to have a lot of raffle prizes donated by many businesses in the local area. The raffle prize winners are listed below and can be found at: www.capelstmary.org.uk I must say a big thank you to Jon Bunkell who did an absolutely amazing job producing this year’s programme. I hope everyone got to see a copy, it had so much in it including sponsors, advertisers, a map of the event, future events and a list of raffle prizes. A final thank you goes out to everyone who turned out to make the day such a success. Myself, Jon Bunkell and Tracy Chappell have already had lots of messages saying what a great day people had. This does make it worthwhile so we look forward to seeing you next year. The total raised from this year’s event was in excess of £2,000 and has been handed over to Capel Community Trust which is responsible for the upkeep of certain amenities such as the playing field, play areas and the village hall complex which now has a new roof. Without fundraising efforts like this and from Capel Community Association, these costs would need to be met by other means. Almost certainly this would result in an increase in your parish council tax. In addition to this amount, the community association bar generated a turnover of £1,800 which is a significant increase over last year. So thank you very much for supporting us. Funday 2017 will be on Saturday, June 10. We’re always looking for help so if you would like to join the committee, have any ideas about what you would like to see, can help on the day or have any feedback then please email: fi-ruth-entertainments@hotmail.co.uk If you took photos on the day that you’re happy to share, please email them to the address above or post them on our Facebook page, Capel Funday 2016. NEWS SCARECROW TRAIL SATURDAY 11 AND SUNDAY 12 JUNE 2016 We hope you all enjoyed the trail and appreciated the efforts of those who had made the scarecrows. Below are the correct answers. Again we had a record number of scarecrows and a record number of people taking part in spite of the heavy rain on both Saturday and Sunday. Thank you to everyone who made a scarecrow and all who took part in the trail. It proved to be very difficult this year with no one getting all 60 correct. Only five people/families got 57 answers correct. All the names were put into a hat and the winner was Anita Haynes. Congratulations to her. There was a lot of divided opinions regarding the favorite scarecrow, but the winner with by far the most votes was Mad Hatters Tea Party made by Julie Wardle at 17 Thorney Road. Again congratulations. The committee would like to thank the Co-op and Mall-Wood Insurance Services for selling the forms for us. Unfortunately, two scarecrows were unable to come out to play and this caused some confusion. People have asked what they were so I have included them in the answers below. NEWS HINTLESHAM & CHATTISHAM– THE STORY OF TWO SUFFOLK VILLAGES This is the story of a pair of local villages forming one community. Written lovingly by two residents it’s a work covering a period of 5,000 years. The contents have been gathered painstakingly from records and documents collected over years of extensive research and many interviews of residents past and present. Through 15 chapters it looks at the influences that have formed and determined the development of the villages including manors, landscape, agriculture, the church, wars and education. The committee has two objectives in connection with the project it has undertaken: •
The raising of a permanent and fitting memorial to ensure that the sacrifices made by the soldiers of Capel St Mary and the surrounding area are properly recognised.
•
The raising of awareness within the community, particularly the younger element, of the stories behind the events of the time and the local people involved.
The committee is seeking a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund in connection with the second objective. This part of the project will involve significant research and the results will in due course be published in the form of a book to be distributed to the local community. The committee is also planning an exhibition in the summer of 2018 prior to the dedication of the memorial on November 11, 2018, the 100th anniversary of the end the First World War. The Heritage Lottery Fund will not contribute towards the raising of the memorial itself, hence the need to seek the support of the local community. The committee has already received support from the organisations listed below and the letter received from the parents fundraising committee of Capel St Mary Primary School summed up the spirit of those helping. It referred to the children’s efforts giving them a sense of pride for years to come in helping towards such an important feature for our village. Needless to say we would welcome your support in whatever way you can. Details of the project, including how you can help, can be found at www.capelmemorial.org.uk or alternatively please contact any of the following committee members: Gary Bunkell (chairman), Mike Woodward (treasurer), William Dimond, Griff Johns, John Sturgeon, Councillors Chris Streatfield and David Thompson and Jim Sporle. SUPPORTERS Capel St Mary Women’s Institute, Capel Ladies, Capel St Mary Primary School, Capel Castles, Upstix Estate Agents, Capel St Mary Parish Council, Capel St Mary Methodist Church, Capel Capers and many Capel St Mary residents who have already contributed.
ST ELIZABETH HOSPICE Many thanks to all those who donated items for the stall which I ran at Capel Fun Day on June 4. With your help I managed to raise a grand total of £106.24 which included donations. After a cloudy morning it turned out sunny and warm in the afternoon and it was good to see so many people there. Thanks also to husband Bob for his help with the stall. Linda Morrison, Hospice Rep for Capel St Mary

The work details the contribution made to local life and beyond by some of the more famous inhabitants and by many who are less well known. Published in hardback and consisting of 380 pages with nearly 500 photographs and illustrations, many in colour, this is surely one of the most complete records of village life covering one of the smaller rural communities. The book will be launched at Hintlesham Community Hall over the weekend July 9-10, 10am-5pm both days, at a special introductory price of £20. There will also be a photo exhibition and refreshments will be available. If you would like a copy, but are unable to attend the launch please contact: 01473 652359 / r.d.chase@uwclub.net
30 YEARS OF THE FLORAL DISPLAY Capel St Mary Parish Council would like to thank the following sponsors without whom this year’s display would not be possible. With the support of local groups and businesses we have been able to brighten up the shopping precinct with our wonderful display over the last 30 years. The theme for 2016 is red, white and blue in celebration of the Queen’s 90th birthday and grown locally by our own allotments association. For the past 25 years Councillor White has been the driving force of the display encouraging sponsorship and erecting the display, even breaking his wrist once falling off the ladder! Councillor White has now stepped down from involvement with the display and we all thank him for his efforts over the years. It’s not too late if you would like to sponsor a display for 2016 which is presented and maintained June to September at a cost of £35. Please contact the clerk on 01473 314103. Our thanks are given to the following: Capel Mushrooms, JP Davis, Harvest Moon Café, Robin’s Childcare, Ausco Builders, Roland Tremaine, St Mary’s Church, Capel and Lt Wenham Bowls Club, Capel Station Garage, Upstix Sales and Rental, Vellacott Farms, Orchard Players, Methodist Church, Beacon Coffee Shop, Allotments Association, Garden Club, Capel WI, Mallwood Insurance Services, Capel Community Church, Capel Ladies, Carpet Bowls, East of England Co-op, Joan’s Coffee Morning and the White Horse Inn.

NEWS CAPEL ST MARY PARISH COUNCIL Meeting held Monday, June 13 Present at the meeting were: Councillors Bishop, Hole, Kilby, Matthews, Powell, Rogers, Streatfield, Thomas, Thompson, Weaver, White, County Councillor Jones, District Councillors Carpendale and Swan, Julie Lawes (clerk) and two members of the public.
information received will be placed on our website and noticeboards.
Complaints have been received regarding the fumes from the Cappadocia Restaurant.
The Queen’s birthday celebrations are drawing to an end with the raffle and quiz prizes being presented at 7pm on Friday, July 15 in the village hall.
Further complaints have been received regarding incorrect charging of items from the Co-op Store. This has been reported and an audit is to be carried out. The following planning application has been recommended for refusal to Babergh District Council: Quinta, Cedars Lane. Two applications have been passed to the District Council Arboriculturist for recommendation: Rudgwick House, Days Road and Barnsley Cottage, 93 The Street. An application for Listed Building Consent at Jermyn’s Farm, Days Road was returned with no comment. Discussion was held following the Strategic Housing Land Allocation Assessment (SHLAA) released by Babergh District Council identifying areas for possible development around the village. This included land identified by Hopkins Homes in Days Road for which a public consultation was held. The council has also recently been contacted by Persimmon Homes advising us of their interest in land east of Longfield Road and an intention to submit a planning application for 150 houses. Any further DEVELOPMENT IN CAPEL ST MARY The parish council has for some time been advising residents that development has to take place in core villages. Capel St Mary is one of 10 core villages and there has to be 1,050 houses. In 2013 we produced the Parish Plan. In October 2015 we held a very successful drop-in session with help from staff at BDC, and a report was produced for each household. More recently a Housing Needs Survey has been completed by residents, the report being due in early July. Hence we have built up evidence of where residents think that future development should take place, the type of housing that is required, and any issues in the village such as the surgery and parking. We hope that this will be taken into account when applications have to be decided. In 2014 Babergh had a ‘call for sites’ which asked for plots of land of at least two hectares adjacent to the village. The closing date was December 4, 2014. On Friday, May 27, 2016 the results were published in the SHLAA (Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment). The SHLAA shows five major sites around the village (some are subdivided), three of which are available to be developed in the next five years, although we would not
The Housing Need Survey draft report is expected to be ready by July 1 the results of which will be used in conjunction with our drop-in results and Parish Plan to help the council make recommendations on any future planning applications according to resident’s wishes.
This years floral display has been a great success and we thank all those who sponsored this event (see page 8). Accounts were approved and presented for signing. Julie Lawes, clerk The next meeting of Capel St Mary Parish Council is on Monday, July 11 in the library. We do not meet in August. There is an open session at each meeting when members of the public can air any problems. The actual minutes of the meeting are available for viewing at the parish council office at 27a The Street, Capel St Mary, which is open from 10amnoon on Tuesdays and from 1-3pm on Fridays. The parish clerk can be contacted on 01473 314103 during these times. An answer phone operates outside these hours and messages are picked up everyday. Alternatively contact can be made by email: capel. parishclerk@btinternet.com expect that all three sites would be developed. This document can be found on the Babergh website. Go to page 49 for information on Capel. All residents are now aware that Hopkins Homes plan to apply to build 100 houses on land off Days Road. Their timeline indicates that an application will be submitted in July and the anticipated Planning Committee date is January. Of course this could be earlier. The parish council were not aware of this proposal until 7.30pm on the Friday evening before letters were received by all households. More recently we have received information from Persimmon Homes that they have an interest in land east of Longfield Road and plan to apply to build 150 homes. No further information at present. Both the parish council and your district councillors are striving to achieve development that residents have indicated the village needs and in the area(s) that residents have indicated are preferred. Updates on development can be found on Capel St Mary Parish Council website and our Facebook page as well as in Capel Capers. Chris Matthews, Chair Capel St Mary Parish Council
Capel St Mary Parish Council is aware of a leaflet distributed to residents of the village regarding proposed development in Days Road. Following contact from numerous residents we would like to clarify that this document is in no way connected to the parish council and is sourced by an individual group.

NEWS REPORT TO PARISHES, MID-SAMFORD WARD: JUNE 2016 BABERGH DISTRICT COUNCILLOR SUE CARPENDALE New Joint Local Planning framework: Local Development Scheme (LDS) The council has to prepare (yet another) Local Plan with a publicly available program and timetable of the planning documents they intend to prepare. This LDS will replace all LDS/Local Plan programmes previously produced and be supplemented or updated with real-time progress information. During the summer an employment land review and a strategic housing market assessment will be carried out, and probably an additional call for sites (likely to include sites smaller than the two hectares of the last exercise). Despite hundreds of permissions already given, only 157 new homes were built in Babergh last year. Work is underway to find out just why approved developments are not being started. Lavenham Neighbourhood Plan Babergh’s first Neighbourhood Plan is nearing completion. Starting in September 2013, a first draft was published in July last year. After consultations and compliance checks it was formally examined this March. Babergh have just agreed that with the examiner’s recommended modifications and a local referendum can be held. If ‘adopted’, Lavenham’s Neighbourhood Plan will be used, where relevant, to determine planning applications. Online ‘Open for Business’ survey Babergh and Mid Suffolk are committed to supporting all businesses in the districts. As well as attracting new businesses to the area, they want to help small firms and start-ups with issues like access to finance, dealing with legislation and sharing ideas and best practice. Both councils need to know much more about how local businesses
currently operate, the obstacle they face and how the councils can use their powers and resources to help. This online survey will be instrumental in ensuring the councils tailor services and target resources. Sixty per cent of our businesses are small and based in the rural areas. Businesses have until July 31 to complete the survey at: www.Babergh.gov.uk/OpenBusinessSurvey Angel Court Hadleigh Babergh has completed the purchase of Angel Court in Hadleigh from Suffolk County Council. The site, which was a 29 bed care home, occupies a prime location within the town, but has been empty for some time. This acquisition is part of a wider aim to invest in communities by acquiring redundant public sites, bringing them back into use for housing. Delivering the council’s strategic plan In recent months we have highlighted the priority areas for Babergh and the five key themes adopted by the council which are: housing delivery; business growth and increased productivity; community capacity-building and engagement; assets and investment; and turning both councils into enabled and efficient organisations. You may have seen the ‘plan on a page’ (which you can find on Babergh’s website). We are piloting an interactive version of this on the intranet, with a view to making much of it available to residents. While it is primarily a management tool, it will also allow people to see what progress the council is making on some 30 projects, all designed to deliver on the five key themes. As well as being ‘paper-lite’ we hope it will increase transparency and information for our communities. sue.carpendale@babergh.gov.uk
BABERGH DISTRICT COUNCILLOR FENELLA SWAN Community Engagement Campaign The two districts are facing major pressures to build more houses, with a growing population combining with factors such as increased life expectancy and smaller households driving demand for more homes. To ensure all residents understand what these pressures are, as well as what challenges and what opportunities they bring, the district councils will be opening up the conversation on growth to the public under the title Building a Sustainable Future.
and the committee will decide whether or not to formally adopt the LDO, the design of which has been funded by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). If adopted, the LDO will allow Jimmy’s Farm to carry out several improvements without returning to the planning committee for additional planning permission, including: •
Installation of refreshment kiosks and facilities
To help start this conversation, council officers will be hosting dozens of Building a Sustainable Future events throughout the districts over the next seven weeks. These events will be open to all residents to drop in and talk with officers about the pressures the districts are facing and how to respond to these without endangering the unique character and identities of Babergh and Mid Suffolk. There will also be the opportunity to discuss the impact new housing will have on economic growth, job opportunities, the sustainability of local services and infrastructure.
•
Construction of permanent storage buildings on the site of current temporary storage
•
Raising of a second polytunnel for rearing turkeys
•
Conversion of a barn into an indoor children’s play area
Everyone in the district is encouraged to come. Details of events are available on the Babergh website.
This is the first LDO to have been adopted for consultation by Babergh District Council, and follows on from the designation of Babergh’s first Food Enterprise Zone (FEZ) in Wherstead. LDOs are made by local planning authorities and give a grant of planning permission to specific types of development within a defined area. The streamlined planning process they allow creates certainty and saves time and money for those involved, without permitting unrestricted development or removing a planning authority’s oversight. LDOs cannot provide planning permission to alter any aspect of a listed building.
An information booklet detailing the purpose of the campaign and how residents can engage and find more information is currently being delivered to every home in the district. Local Development Order Babergh’s first Local Development Order, on Jimmy’s Farm, is out for comment after being adopted for consultation by Babergh’s Planning Committee. Members of the public will have 28 days to comment on the draft. Once the consultation is closed the responses will be considered
www.keepingintouchwith.com/capelcapers
Each of these improvements would be required to take place within a strict and pre-defined area of the property, but could take place without going through the full planning process for each one.

NEWS CONSTABLE COUNTRY MEDICAL PRACTICE Staff Changes I’m delighted to announce that Dr Ewa El Graoui joined the practice on June 13 as a GP Partner. We now have four GP Partners and are advertising to fill our outstanding vacancies for an additional doctor and a nurse practitioner. Many practices are struggling to recruit doctors, as there is a national shortage of GPs, and our practice is no exception. In the meantime, we will continue to use a number of excellent doctors on a locum basis, including Dr Johal, Dr Le Roux and Dr Kunche. Dr Ewa’s arrival will help us to improve continuity of care to patients. Dr Omar left the practice at the end of March and will be moving to a different part of the UK. Until then he will continue to oversee our four GP registrars. Practice workload and operations We operate a very busy practice with demand steadily increasing in line with national trends. In order to cope with demand and work within NHS funding constraints, the practice needs to operate in a way which offers the best service possible, with the finite resources at our disposal. I thought it worthwhile clarifying a few issues which patients have bought to my attention. We feel that our new appointment system offers excellent access for patients. Some practices insist that all appointments are initially via telephone with a doctor, and others refuse to offer appointments when they are full. We do neither. We have some pre-bookable appointments, the majority are then available for booking on the day, and when they are full we operate an overflow list where we will never turn a patient away. Patients on the overflow list will initially speak with a doctor over the phone and then be seen in person if necessary. Although this does not work for everyone we feel this is an excellent compromise; patients will always be able to speak to a doctor whenever they contact us. As long as we have your mobile number, the practice will send you a text message confirming your appointment. Please note that Constable Country Medical Practice refers to the East Bergholt site and Capel St Mary to the Capel site. For technical reasons we are unable to change ‘Constable Country Medical Practice’ for ‘East Bergholt’ but are exploring the possibility of doing this. Our doctors have 10 minutes for a face-to-face appointment, as specified
by NHS England. However, when patients attend with serious or multiple problems, consultations can take longer. Doctors may also have to see additional urgent cases or make an urgent visit to a patient’s home. Please be patient, but if the doctor is overrunning and you cannot wait then let the receptionist know. Along with all other practices in Suffolk, we are working with the Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) to reduce NHS prescribing costs. A pharmacist from the CCG helps us to identify patients who could be switched to identical, but non-branded medication which is often considerably cheaper. The pharmacist will then write to the patient informing them of the change. All medication changes are approved by our doctors before they are made, and if the patient experiences any problems, e.g. because of a different coating, the doctors are happy to discuss with the patient and switch back if necessary. Finally, just a word about test results and medication. Our doctors review hundreds of test results and letters every week (often hundreds a day). If a patient has been referred for a test the practice will inform them if further action is required. We will not contact patients if no action is required though patients can contact the practice to find out their result. With regard to medication, when medication is requested by a consultant following discharge from hospital, the doctors will enter the medication on the patient’s record. However, the prescription will generally only be printed out, signed and ready for collected when requested by the patient. This is because the hospital is obliged to provide 14 days medication following discharge and the patient may not require further medication depending on the nature of their problem and speed of recovery. Training Days A reminder that the practice will be closed from 1pm on the following dates for staff training: Wednesday, June 22 and Thursday, July 14. On these afternoons the doors will be closed so please ensure any prescriptions are picked up well beforehand. If you phone the practice the recorded message will ask you to ring 111 for medical assistance if your problem cannot wait until the next day. Practice Manager Pete Keeble
CONSTABLE COUNTRY PATIENT PARTICIPATION GROUP (PPG) We very much welcome the appointment of a fourth partner to the practice, as mentioned in the practice manager’s report on page 8. The PPG continues to monitor all the comments we receive from patients whether by email or by means of the comment cards that are available in both surgeries. As the group has now been established for nearly a year, and our individual involvement with the PPG is increasingly recognised, we like to have informal chats with people who want to talk to us about different issues if they meet us in the waiting rooms or in the village streets. There will always be issues of concern where sickness and health are involved, but it is encouraging to hear and read some very supportive and favourable comments from time to time. The PPG is especially grateful to Chris Yule for inaugurating the Capel Volunteers Transport Scheme. We hope this will provide a valuable facility for anyone in the village who cannot make it to the surgery for a booked appointment because they have no independent means of transport. We welcome all sorts of comment – well, nearly all, as we have had one or two forthright comments telling the PPG to go away! Our email address is: constablecoluntryppg@gmail.com Much the most important item for us this month will be our first public

and patient engagement meeting at which Dr Gerry Rayman, who heads the Diabetes Centre at Ipswich Hospital, will be talking about the prevention of diabetes and its complications (see page 4). This will be held at Constable Hall in East Bergholt on Wednesday, July 6, 7.30-9pm, and members of the public from all the villages served by the practice are welcome. Diabetes is a killing disease, but its development can be minimised and its treatment can be greatly assisted by having a healthy lifestyle – and it is the prevention of the disease on which Dr Rayman will concentrate. However, those patients who already have diabetes, either Type 1 or Type 2, will also be most welcome as the meeting will also cover the prevention of the various complications of diabetes. More details will be circulated throughout the villages nearer the time, but meanwhile please make a note of the date. We intend to hold similar meetings on topics of general health importance to which all members of the public served by the practice will be invited, recognising that we want to live up to our title by participating as actively as possible in disease prevention and healthy lifestyle issues. NEWS / OUT & ABOUT KEEP CAPEL GREEN CAPEL FUN DAY 2016 What a great day fun day was and after a cold, cloudy week the sun shone. The trust would like to thank Ruth Rawthorn, Jon Bunkell and Tracy Chapell for making it such a success. They put in numerous hours, all unpaid, to make this an event the whole village can enjoy. Also a reminder that the main hall of the village hall will be closed for the first three weeks in August while it is decorated. The library and bars will be open as usual. If you have any questions please call Mandy (312026) or Sandra (capelcommunitytrust@gmail.com). Please contact Sandra on 312114 to arrange collection.
STOUR VALLEY MEN’S PROBUS CLUB On June 1 John Field presented a talk entitled Giles, The Cartoonist and his Adopted Town and on June 15 John Tingey spoke of the great work undertaken by the RNLI. On July 6 Lewis Tyler will talk about The River Gipping Trust and David Brown will present a talk entitled The Land of the Dragon on July 20. Our popular summer lunch is at the Lawford Venture Centre on Sunday, July 17. No meetings take place in August. We meet at 10.30am on the first and third Wednesday of each month in St John Ambulance HQ, Manningtree CO11 1EB. New members are welcomed. You will all be aware of the proposed development in Days Road and will hopefully have received a note outlining some of the issues for the village as a whole. With building sites for 815 houses identified around the whole village, on top of the 488 approved so far at East Bergholt and Brantham, you can see how quickly the landscape will be changed permanently and not, in most people’s view, for the better. A quick check on the internet reveals that Capel is not alone as the country seeks to accommodate our ever burgeoning population. We all recognise there is a need to build new affordable houses, albeit there is absolutely no guarantee that these will go to our own sons, daughters or other relatives. The government relaxed planning regulations to accommodate the growth. One of the real issues is should these regulations have been relaxed to encourage building on greenfield sites instead of the less lucrative brown field developments? Should land owners and builders enjoy a lucky lottery win without buying a ticket at the expense of the countryside? As a result of the government’s relaxation of planning rules, land previously worth £100,000 becomes worth up to £10m or more. This is clearly a real incentive for our farmers and builders to concrete over England’s green and pleasant land. The government set up a process for petitions to be debated in parliament and we are proposing to utilise this approach to flag up the concerns both locally and nationally. If the landowners and builders are to enjoy significant profits at the expense of our countryside should they not be subject to something akin to a windfall tax on their gain to ensure that the whole country can benefit from this change in policy? OUT & ABOUT
CAPEL LIBRARY We have been very busy here at the library during the last couple of weeks. On Saturday, May 28 the library was turned into a laboratory for the day, thanks to our friends at Kinetic Adventure. Children were shown how to make floating flowers, which opened up once placed on water, and paper aeroplanes and helicopters with an opportunity to see whose went the furthest. They were also delighted to see how far a rocket could fly over Capel. The children had a brilliant time and said how much they learned while having fun. Positive feedback was received by all who attended. If you would like a particular event to be held in the library, let us know and we will see what we can do. On Friday, June 10 and Saturday 11 we held a storytime and craft session entitled The Queens’ Knickers telling the story by Nicholas Allen. The children then made their own pair of knickers fit for the Queen. It was great fun and the newly designed knickers were displayed on our own washing line for all to see. The children who attended all created a wonderful pair of knickers with fabric, lace and ribbons generously donated by members of the community and the local Knit and Natter group, and they were all truly different colourful and unique. Pictures of these events can be found on the Capel Library Facebook page. July sees us once again offering the ever popular Summer Reading Scheme for the summer holiday break. This year it has a Roald Dahl theme and we expect to be very busy. We are seeking volunteers to help us to hear the children talk about the book that they have just read and we thank those who have already signed up, but we need more. If you can offer us an hour or two throughout the holiday season then please come in and speak with Jackie, our manager, or any other member of staff who will answer all your questions. Children can pre-register from Saturday, July 16 with the scheme starting on July 23. While we encourage children of all ages into the library we regret that under eights must be accompanied by an adult. Several children had to be turned away during the last half term break which was disappointing for both children and staff. Thank you for taking note of this library rule. Baby Bounce will continue to meet up to and including July 19 and

Capel Library Book Group meets at 2.30pm on Friday, July 15 to discuss the recent book. Do come along and join in. New members are very welcome. Please note that we shall close early at 5pm on Friday, July 8 so that our friends the Orchard Players can prepare for their summer show (see page 10). You may use the book drop letter box in the wall and we will deal with the returned books on Saturday 9 when we re-open. IT help is available on Tuesday mornings with two sessions, 10-11am and 11am-noon. Come and have a word with Trevor; to make an appointment ask the library staff for further details. We are once again able to accept offers of good quality donated books for our book stall with donations going to the Friends of Capel Library. The library service offers downloads of magazines via Zinio which are free, and we can offer to get a requested book from another county via our inter library loan service at a small fee. If you need to download an instruction manual then we can do that for you too. All you need is a library card which enables you to visit and take out books from any other Suffolk library and return them to your local library. OUT & ABOUT CAPEL LADIES CLUB We have had a very busy month with different trips and activities. In mid-May two separate groups from the club went badger watching at a Suffolk Wildlife Trust hide on the outskirts of Ipswich. We parked at a prearranged spot and took the map, the key to the hide and some peanuts which were supplied, and set off up the footpath. Once settled in the hide on comfortable seats we waited patiently in silence. Our first group saw a mother badger with cubs and the boar, which was a huge thrill, and on another evening the second group were also lucky as they saw four different badgers. Both groups came away feeling very privileged, having had a short glimpse into the badgers’ secret world. Our second trip in May was to Tattingstone Garden Centre where 14 of us were made very welcome by Lorraine and Brandon who demonstrated how to plant up a hanging basket. They told us about different plant foods, irrigation and types of compost. After the demonstration we were free to choose our own containers, compost and plants and produce our own creations. At the end of the evening we were served tea, coffee and cakes and went home with our colourful trophies. Early June and it was our summer social evening with food, a quiz and a homemade crown competition to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday. All went well until poor Pat Naylor tripped up the edge of the stage in the Vine Lounge and unfortunately suffered a broken ankle as a result. Get well soon Pat. Margaret Chenery won the crown competition and Pat Bradford was the runner-up, while Mary Butters and Penny Thompson came first in the quiz. Our final event of the past month was our stall at Capel Fun Day. The weather suddenly improved and there was lots happening on Capel Playing Field. Our stall was decked out in red, white and blue and was a LUCKY 90 tombola stall, with a children’s tombola as well as one for the grown-ups. Magdeleine Hunt had also made a rag doll for Name the Doll so it was a busy afternoon. The doll’s name was Mimi and the winner was Jessica Wiggins. We raised more than £150 by the end of the afternoon, and a lot of this will go to one of our soon-to-be-chosen charities. Future activities include a boat trip on the Deben, a charity evening, a visit to the Orchard Players’ summer show, and a summer barbecue. For more information visit: www.capelladies.com
MURDER, MOST FOUL! If pre-meditated murder is murder of the most heinous sort, then HADS (Hadleigh Amateur Dramatic Society) will be hitting the headlines of The Sun and other red tops with the slaughter on July 1 and 2 of a local vicar. Who killed the Vicar? is the latest offering of this recently revived drama group. The plot involves a small community with big egos, a summer fete and shenanigans going under a leafy elm tree. Sounds familiar? The play has been adapted to be set in Hadleigh and challenges the audience to solve the murder mystery. Clues are liberally scattered throughout the night’s performance and the Hadleigh Silver Dagger Award will go to the person who identifies the murderer, the accomplice and the motives leading to the dreadful stabbing. And don’t think going the second night means the cat is out of the bag, as two endings are going to be employed. Being performed in the Deanery Gardens, the unique backdrop compliments the storyline. To get in the mood, audience members can arrive before the performance and have a picnic in the gardens – bring your cucumber sandwiches, tea will be available. Director Patsy Forsyth has gathered a strong cast to play the suspects: the vicar’s housekeeper, the organist, the curate, the PCC chair, a rambler and the scoutmaster. We are also hoping to get a special guest to make a timely appearance. Gates open at 5.30pm for picnics, performance starts at 7.30pm. Tickets £5 for Keith Avis Newsagents.
WEA CAPEL ST MARY The branch ran two very interesting courses this last year, and only wish we could attract a few more people to the classes. Our ten-week September course was Russia – From Tsars to Commissars and Oligarchs with David Prynn. David knows the country like the back of his hand and speaks the language as well. Knowing the early history of the country helped us to understand some of the more recent problems and conflicts. Our post-Christmas course was Medieval Festivities and Entertainments in East Anglia with Kate Jewell, a brilliant new tutor. We learnt how our fellow countrymen in medieval times had very little free time, but they knew how to have fun when they did get some holiday time. Drinking, fights and bawdy behaviour are not a new problem! The length of classes from September 2016 onwards may vary as new rules from head office say that classes must be under 15 hours or 20-21 hours. Tutors who come a long way to teach prefer to come less often for a slightly longer time. So, for instance, our autumn term will consist of seven two-hour classes with a break in the middle of each class, and our spring term course will be nine 90-minute classes. More details will be given when our advertisements appear in late summer. Veronica Bramer

OUT & ABOUT FORGET-ME-NOT CLUB
1st CAPEL ST MARY RAINBOWS
The members of the Forget-me-not Club would like to thank all the residents of Capel St Mary who attended our tea party at Dove Close in April to celebrate the Queen’s birthday. It was a very successful afternoon enjoyed by all who attended.
Back in February the 1st Capel St Mary Rainbows celebrated 20 years and welcomed two former leaders, our district commissioner and a member of Friends of Guiding to the meeting.
Another very enjoyable event was the club’s trip to The Hut at Felixstowe in May. Although the weather was rather inclement we enjoyed putting our feet up and having a good chat (and the occasional nap) and those who wished to joined in a few games. The fish and chip lunch was very tasty followed by afternoon tea and cakes before heading home. Members are now looking forward to afternoon tea in Sally Oakley’s delightful garden in Wenham on July 6. If you are feeling a little lonely or would enjoy an extra weekly activity which includes tea, cakes/biscuits, a chat and fun, we would be delighted if you joined us at Wenham View, Dove Close each Wednesday from 2.30-4.30pm.
We were taught a couple of new games that went down very well with the Rainbows, one of which we have since played again. At the end of the meeting we were very kindly given a birthday card and a little bear dressed in Rainbow uniform by one of the former leaders and each girl was given a pot of sweets. As a unit we were given some money from the Friends of Guiding and as a group we decided to purchase a play parachute which the girls were excited about.
We look forward to greeting anyone who would like to join us at our very welcoming and extremely comfortable venue.
Rainbows is held on Tuesdays from 5-6.15pm during term time at St Mary’s Church Hall for girls aged 5-7. We do a range of crafts and activities. This term we are holding a night of mini-Olympics and have made edible ‘bug’ cakes and biscuits which are always a popular choice.
SING FOR FUN
Anyone with young girls is welcome to register on our waiting list at: www.girlgiuding.org.uk

The next Sing for Fun will therefore be on the second Monday in October in St Mary’s Church Hall at 2pm, and will be re-advertised in September and October. We sing purely for fun, you don’t need to read music. The summer months will be used to research new songs for us all to sing. If you possess any books of songs from the fifties up to the current date, let one of us know. Thanks to Jean and Judy who have provided our much needed refreshments after singing. Chris Yule
VILLAGE LINK CLUB For our June meeting Lesley Krohn took us on a tour of the Galapagos Islands showing the variety of wildlife inhabitants on land and sea. On July 13 Stephen Wilkes will present a talk entitled Wills, Inheritance Tax and Protecting Assets. Meetings are held at 10am on the second Wednesday of every month in Tattingstone Village Hall. CAPEL ST MARY GARDEN CLUB On Thursday, May 26 we had a very interesting talk on orchids by Paul Eaton who brought along about 20 of his plants to illustrate his talk. We were surprised at the enormous variety, ranging from the bee orchid through the more common indoor types to airplants. And they grow in various habitats and at various altitudes throughout the world, but not the Arctic and Antarctic! Our next meeting is on September 22 when Sarah Cook and Jim Marshall will talk on Suffolk Garden Plants and the Heritage Garden at Hollesley Bay (next to the Suffolk Punch Trust). We are always happy to welcome new members (£8 a year or £2 if you want to come to a particular meeting as a visitor). Any queries, please let me know. Edwina Cox, chairman: 01473 311121
ROBIN’S NEWS
Baby Bears We have had lots of exciting things happening at Robin’s over the past couple of weeks, including Father’s Day crafts, The Queens 90th birthday celebrations and Children’s Art Week. For art week the Baby Bears joined in with the older children to explore different ways of creating art, from mud painting, fruit and vegetable painting to exploring puffy paint. A messy week enjoyed by all! Over the next few weeks we have a number of new babies joining. We look forward to giving them a huge welcome to the Baby Bears Room. Toddling Tigers The Tigers have been very busy growing and planting lovely flowers and herbs in the room and in garden. They have also been exploring different sounds, both familiar and unfamiliar. Our safari topic provided lots of sounds and the Tigers created their own safari while crawling and climbing through the grass and hay in the room. Gruffalos The Gruffalos have had a busy June. We started off by celebrating the Queen’s 90th birthday. We did this by having a fete and picnic. Thank you to everyone who attended. It was very well supported and all money raised went to The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. We also had a great time being involved in Children’s Art Week and created some fantastic pieces of work and had fun experimenting with different paints and media. We finished with our minibeast topic. The highlight for many of the children was watching the caterpillars grow. As you read this we shall be preparing for our graduation ceremony, where we wish our children leaving for school goodbye and good luck. SPORT / CHURCH NEWS CAPEL ST MARY BOWLS CLUB The season is galloping along at an amazing pace – July already! And the weather has been very mixed, from sweltering heat to freezing cold northerly winds. So a typical English summer. On the social side, 15 members played in a friendly on Saturday, May 21 at Boxford. The whole idea was for a fun and convivial afternoon, which it certainly was. Capel won overall but the result was not that important. We had some lovely homemade cakes with our tea, and the chocolate cake was the favourite. It has to be put on our list for their return match, which we are now all looking forward to on August 20. We have made good progress in the Junior Cup (not for juniors despite name) and at time of writing have reached the semi-final. Our club competitions are now well underway too. Turning now to the various leagues, it has been a mixed start. In the Ipswich & District League Division B we started poorly with losses against Margaret Catchpole and California, but this was followed by two 6-1 wins against Sproughton and Norbridge, so we sit third in the league. In Division G we lost all three opening matches and are propping up the league. In the Samford League Division A we have lost both matches played to date so there is plenty to do in a tough league. In Division F we have lost two from three having had a good start beating Gipping Valley. Finally, in the Ipswich & District Triples League Division A we have won three from four, with a 6-1 win at Bentley always very welcome on a difficult green to play. We top Division E having lost our first two matches by the narrowest of margins, but then winning our next two. Overall then it’s all to play for in the second half of the season. IMPORTANT DATES Saturday, July 9: Station Garage Trophy Saturday, July 23: Ferrari Cup Saturday, July 30: Annual barbecue Saturday, August 6: Pairs Tournament Friday, August 12: Kites vs. Kestrels Jack High
CAPEL ST MARY CARPET BOWLS Very sadly I must start this report by mentioning the death of two of our members. They will be missed, but with the club getting older it is a fact of life. Ergo, we must recruit more members. So my usual plea goes out: Why don’t you join us? Now when everybody is talking taking more exercise, why don’t you pop in on a Tuesday afternoon or a Wednesday evening to see what it’s all about? At least you’ll have a cup of tea! We’ve just had our first match for a long time, a charity match in aid of Cancer Research UK with Bentley. These matches commemorate a husband and wife who played for both clubs for more than 10 years. The best bit of the afternoon was the cheerful chatter and the food after the match and the fact that we raised more than £100. We managed to send along 12 players and we came second. This was a little disappointing, but many of us were otherwise engaged. Suffice it to say that one of the matches was only lost on the last end. Our captain, who did a sterling job, neglected to mention any other results apart from 10-0. But the main point of the afternoon was accomplished – to have a good game in friendly surroundings and to raise money for a good cause. The whole purpose of the club is to play our bowls in a friendly way to the best of our ability. We all try to win, but if we do it’s a bonus. So once again come along and see us in action. I’m sure you will have a go at some stage, it looks so easy! For more details talk to any bowler or contact Ernie on 310628. Derek

THE SERVANT QUEEN AND THE KING SHE SERVES June was an important month this year. The Queen’s official 90th birthday celebrations on the weekend of June 11/12, The European Referendum vote on June 23 and the Group Stages of the Euro 2016 soccer tournament. By the time you are reading this, we will know the outcome of the European vote and whether any of the home countries have reached the knockout stages of Euro 2016. I feel that the most important celebration of 2016 has been the Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations. I am very impressed by the 64-page book produced by the Bible Society, HOPE and the London Institute for Contemporary Christianity entitled The Servant Queen and the King she Serves. Her Majesty the Queen was pleased to write a short preface to the book and says that she was touched that the producers have published this book to celebrate her 90th birthday. She goes on to say: “In my first Christmas Broadcast in 1952, I asked the people of the Commonwealth and Empire to pray for me as I prepared to dedicate myself to their service at my Coronation. I have been – and remain – very grateful to you for your prayers and to God for His steadfast love. I have indeed seen His faithfulness.” In the book there are a number of references to the Queens’ personal journey of faith and one says: “We can surely be grateful that, 2,000 years after the birth of Jesus, so many of us are able to draw inspiration from his life and message, and to find in him a source of strength and courage.” The Queen has been a tremendous example to us all and despite some difficult experiences involving her family and the nations of the world, she can look back and say that she has experienced the faithfulness of God. The book has been given out free of charge by the three churches in the village to a number of senior citizens and others. If you would like one, please contact any of the church contacts mentioned on the church information page. Peter Matthews Capel Community Church
MESSY CHURCH The next Messy Church is on Saturday, July 9 at the Methodist Church from 10.30am-12.30pm. What is Messy church, I hear you ask? Well it’s a fun, new way of doing church relevant to families today. We have an hour of craft activities and sports challenges suitable for all ages, followed by a short celebration including some singing and a Bible story/drama related to the theme for the day which this time will be Breakfast on the Beach. Often Granddad and Lucy (puppets) make an appearance. This will be followed by a barbecue lunch in the garden (hopefully). It’s all free, but donations are gratefully received. Who can come? All age families. Kids, you must bring at least one adult. If you haven’t been before, talk to someone who has and I’m sure they’ll tell you it’s great and you must come. No need to book, just turn up. Hope to see lots of you there. CHURCH NEWS THREE MAJOR SAINTS FOR JULY Did you know that there is at least one saint for every day of the year? Here are three for this wonderful summer month. I hope they will inform and inspire you. Source: Wikipedia
July 3: Thomas the Apostle (called Didymus which means “the twin”) was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ according to the New Testament. He is informally called doubting Thomas because he doubted Jesus’ resurrection when first told (in the Gospel of John), followed later by his confession of faith, “My Lord and my God” on seeing Jesus’ wounded body. Traditionally, he is said to have travelled outside the Roman Empire to preach the Gospel, travelling as far as Tamilakam in present-day India. According to tradition, the Apostle reached Muziris, Tamilakam present day India in AD 52 and baptised several people, founding what today are known as Saint Thomas Christians or Nasranis. After his death, the reputed relics of Saint Thomas the Apostle were enshrined as far as Mesopotamia in the third century, and later moved to various places. In 1258, some of the relics were brought to Abruzzo in Ortona, Italy, where they have been held in the Church of Saint Thomas the Apostle. He is often regarded as the Patron Saint of India, and the name Thoma remains quite popular among Saint Thomas Christians of India. July 22: Mary Magdalene or Mary of Magdala and sometimes the Magdalene, is a figure in Christianity. Mary Magdalene travelled with
Jesus as one of his followers. She is said to have witnessed Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection. Within the four Gospels she is named at least 12 times, more than most of the apostles. During the Middle Ages, Mary Magdalene was regarded in Western Christianity as a repentant prostitute or loose woman. These traits are not directly attested in any of the four canonical gospels and are rather a matter of tradition. She is most prominent in the narrative of the crucifixion of Jesus, at which she was present. She was also present two days later, immediately following the Sabbath, when, according to all four canonical Gospels, she was either alone or as a member of a group of women the first to testify to the resurrection of Jesus. John 20 and Mark 16:9 specifically name her as the first person to see Jesus after his resurrection. Ideas that go beyond the gospel presentation of Mary Magdalene as a prominent representative of the women who followed Jesus have been put forward over the centuries. July 25: James, son of Zebedee (died 44 AD) was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus, and traditionally considered the first apostle to be martyred. He was a son of Zebedee and Salome, and brother of John the Apostle. He is also called James the Greater or James the Great to distinguish him from James, son of Alphaeus and James the Just. The tradition at Compostela placed the discovery of the relics of the saint in the time of King Alfonso II (791-842) and of bishop Theodemir of Iria. These traditions were the basis for the pilgrimage route that began to be established in the 9th century, and the shrine dedicated to James at Santiago de Compostela, in Galicia in Spain, became the most famous pilgrimage site in the Christian world. The Way of St James is a tree of routes that cross Western Europe and arrive at Santiago through Northern Spain. Eventually James became the patron saint of Spain.
CHRISTIANS in Capel The members of all the churches foster a closer fellowship and understanding between the respective Christian communities in Capel St Mary. They endeavour to co-ordinate common interests and where practical share common resources to meet specific needs.

CHURCH NEWS CAPEL ST MARY METHODIST CHURCH PARTIES AND DIVISIONS The celebrations for the Queen’s 90th birthday have inspired many over the past three months. As I concluded a celebration service for the Queen on Sunday, June 12, I mused “what will we be doing in 10 years’ time if she makes it to her 100th Birthday” – and I think there is every chance she will. Her mother lived to almost 102. At 90 years our Queen still works 40 hours a week. Six months before her Coronation, Elizabeth asked the people of the United Kingdom and Commonwealth to: “Pray that God may give me wisdom and strength to carry out the solemn promises I shall be making, and that I may faithfully serve Him and you, all the days of my life.” I think most of us would affirm that God has indeed answered those prayers. The birthday party is now over and there are pressing things on our agenda, not least the referendum and the football. By the time this is published we will know the results of both, but at the time of writing there is great anxiety about them. The violence among fans has bought about the threat of expulsion for two teams. How sad for the teams and the majority of fans if teams go out of the competition not because of failure to score goals but the dreadful behaviour of some fans in the cities and stadiums of France. The language around the referendum debate is also getting heated and whatever the outcome, there will be need for much reconciliation between the warring factions because of the accusations and bitterness of the campaigns. However even these conflicts are minor in comparison with those experienced by David Nott, a war-zone surgeon in Bosnia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Congo, Syria and elsewhere. He carried on with operations when the hospital was being bombed and even when ISIS commanders burst into the operating theatre. He was witness to terrible trauma and
injuries. His focus was to do what he could, at great danger to himself, but sometimes able to bring healing and hope. The Queen has no political power, but by her personal authority she has brought nations together. She has been instrumental in reconciliation, between communities. One Christmas Day broadcast she spoke about the importance of forgiveness, for without it “divisions between families, communities and nations remain unbridgeable. We owe it to our children and grandchildren to live up to the standards of behaviour and tolerance which we are so eager to teach them.” In the Christmas Day (1976) broadcast she said: “The gift I would most value next year is that reconciliation should be found wherever it is needed. A reconciliation which would bring peace and security to families and neighbours at present suffering and torn apart.” The nation and the world is even more divided than it was then, therefore let us do what we can to reconcile people together.
