In Touch with Hadleigh

A WORD FROM THE EDITOR Recently an old college friend posted a link on Facebook entitled 20 Quotes From Children’s Books Every Adult Should Know and I’d like to share my favourites with you. “Promise me you’ll remember, you are BRAVER than you believe, STRONGER than you seem, SMARTER than you think.” A. A. Milne, Winnie the Pooh “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.” Aesop, The Lion and the Mouse “If you have good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.” Roald Dahl, The Twits “The moment where you doubt whether you can fly, you cease forever being able to do it.” J.M. Barrie, Peter Pan And my absolute favourite: “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” Dr Seuss, The Lorax And just one more:

“How lucky am I to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.” A. A. Milne, Winnie the Pooh A quote which makes me smile (often through gritted teeth) wasn’t listed, but it comes to me often at bedtime when I’m trying not to lose my patience with the little boy calling (again) from the top of the stairs: “There is nothing sweeter in this sad world than the sound of someone you love calling your name.” The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo Perhaps these great life lessons were lost on us as children. Perhaps they inspired us. If so I hope they inspire you anew. A Roald Dahl or a Dr Seuss is always worth picking up, at any age. Finally, a message to our distribution team. We thank you for doing a great job in all sorts of weather. As you trudge from door to door on frosty winter evenings please do so in the knowledge that your efforts are appreciated. Please take care over the winter months.

NEWS WHO SAID THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS A FREE LUNCH? Thanks to the generosity of people in Hadleigh and the surrounding areas, there will be a free lunch at the Ansell Centre on Christmas Day for anyone who would otherwise be on their own at this time. This applies to local villages as well. There are many reasons as to why people might find themselves alone at Christmas, for example partners who do shift work (I include myself in this category) or are working or stationed abroad, carers whatever their age (who are welcome with the people they care for), those who are bereaved or missing loved ones or single parent families. For some people, being alone is fine, it may be their personal choice, we simply wish to provide a seasonal alternative.

If you feel that you, or someone you know, would benefit from a traditional Christmas meal, with company and entertainment, then please get in touch. Personal invitations with full details about this free event will be sent out once we have an idea of how many people we are catering for – details will include times, menus (including vegetarian and gluten free options) and transport requirements. Please also get in touch if you would like to assist in the running of this event. Our contact details are: Sarah and Simon Thompson 01473 829246 (please leave a message if we are out) / sarahtooley10@hotmail.com

DECEMBER DEADLINE 20 NOVEMBER 2015 is the final date for both advertising and editorial copy

As you can see, the first thing to explain is our change of name. It was felt after our Dying Matters event this year that we actually catered for events much wider than just dying. At our next event on May 14, 2016 we will have many more people who deal with all aspects of end of life care as well as what to do when someone dies. These will include health professionals, businesses, charities and civil and religious or non-religious options for funerals. Therefore, LIVING with DYING encompasses a lot of situations and information. So… how can this event help you? This whole subject applies to everyone, whatever your age. As we go through our everyday work and lives we are acutely aware that many people experience unexpected traumas and tragedy, whether through terminal diagnosis, accidents, death in its many ways, care in your own home or needing to move into full time care. There are certain legal requirements and personal wishes that can be set in place to help you and your family cope more easily when difficult decisions may have to be made at an emotionally turbulent time. This event is here to help you organise as much as you can. We have exhibitions to view from Tuesday, May 10 to Thursday 19, 2016 and much more happening on Saturday 14. All these are to help give you peace of mind, to help allay your fears and know your wishes will be carried out. We have arranged five 45 minute masterclass sessions throughout the day in the Guildroom opposite the church porch. For example, Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance will be talking about their work in making Hadleigh the first Suffolk town to be officially recognised as dementia friendly. We will announce more information that will help you at LIVING with DYING in the coming months, including other masterclass subjects. Kate Brett, Jess Janas and Pauline Thrower

NEWS 2015 SHOEBOX APPEAL A message from the volunteers at Woodview Nurseries Thank you once again to everyone who helped with the 2014 shoebox appeal. We were able to process and send 13,000 gift boxes from the Ipswich area to needy children in Eastern Europe. This year’s appeal is now underway. If you would like to make up a gift for a child you should cover a shoebox and lid separately with wrapping paper and label it for a boy or girl with one of these age ranges: 2-4, 5-9 or 10-14. Contents could include: • Pencils, crayons, chalk, notebooks and colouring books • Soft toys with CE label, puppets, dolls, small games, children’s playing cards, balls, skipping ropes, toy cars, jigsaws, whistles, mouth organs • Soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste, flannels or sponges, combs • Hats, gloves, hair slides and beads • Sweets with a long date but not chocolate as it doesn’t travel well We would appreciate a £3 donation towards transport. This can be cash or a cheque inside the box or a payment online through the Samaritans Purse website. Please use an elastic band to secure the box until we check and tape it up. If you are unable to make up a shoebox but have items from the above list to donate we can use them to make up extra boxes at the warehouse. Please drop off boxes and donations as soon as possible in November, either at Woodview Nurseries (Bentley IP9 2DG) during the day or at one of the drop off points listed on the website. For further information call: 01473 310254/716437

HELP OLDER PEOPLE IN SUFFOLK STAY WARM AND HEALTHY THIS WINTER Unbelievable as it may sound, 450 vulnerable people in Suffolk die in the winter months from causes directly attributable to the cold and poor living conditions. The vast majority of individuals affected are over 65 years old. In fact, this is just the tip of the iceberg – almost 30,000 households in Suffolk currently live in fuel poverty. Many will suffer in silence during the coldest months, hidden from view, withdrawn from their community and surrounds. Now in its fifth year and spearheaded by the Suffolk Community Foundation in partnership with Age UK Suffolk and the East Anglian Daily Times, the Surviving Winter campaign rallies around these vulnerable older individuals, offering them respite from the anxiety of managing fuel costs and the opportunity to stay warm and healthy during the winter. Incredibly and with thanks to the generosity of Suffolk pensioners, over £85,000 was raised in the winter of 20142015, helping over 300 vulnerable older households in the county.

• Support payments to those who need additional financial help to heat their homes properly, eat appropriately, stay active and keep in touch with their family and community. The payments will be distributed in partnership with Age UK Suffolk. • Grants to local charities and groups with a track record of looking after older, vulnerable people and ensuring their continued support throughout the winter months. This truly is an extraordinarily worthwhile campaign, so please… IF YOU DON’T NEED IT, PLEASE DONATE IT!! • To donate online visit: www.justgiving.com/suffolksurvivingwinter • To donate by card please call: 01473 602602 • Please send cheques made payable to Suffolk Community Foundation to Surviving Winter Appeal, Suffolk Community Foundation, The Old Barns, Peninsula Business Centre, Wherstead, Ipswich IP9 2BB To claim please contact Age UK Suffolk: 01473 359911

Suffolk Community Foundation is now asking you to pledge your Winter Fuel Payment to help those desperately in need of extra support during the winter. The money raised by the Surviving Winter campaign will be used in two ways:

NEWS CHERNOBYL CHILDREN’S LIFE LINE Having been to Belarus last month I have returned with details of the six children who will be travelling to the UK on December 4. This is the first time this Link has brought a winter group and everyone is really looking forward to it, especially as the visit will continue through the Christmas period with the children returning on December 30. This visit will be more low key than our usual summer group visit as there will be less time for organised activities with the Christmas period taking up almost two weeks of the children’s stay. Not only will this visit be especially beneficial to the children as they will be able to leave the bitter cold of Belarus for the month, but also, for the first time, we are inviting older children. One child is almost 11 and the others range from 12 to 15. As the children selected are usually between the ages eight to 10 these children usually miss out on the chance to join

a group trip. Also, as they have been learning English since the age of nine communication with their host families should prove easier, although of course we will have an interpreter on hand as always. All of the children have been selected by the local education authorities based on their circumstances and all come from families who cannot afford to send them abroad for health recuperation. As we have never had a group here during the winter it will be interesting to see what they make of our cold weather when they are used to temperatures plunging to as low as minus 30! As usual, we will be providing clothing and other essential items for the children so if you, or anyone you know, has any clothing you could donate for this age range we would be extremely grateful. Shoe sizes for the children range from three to seven. All the children are tall and very slim so leggings and trousers

with elasticated waists are especially welcome. It doesn’t all have to be winter clothing as it would be nice for them to be able to take home some things for the following spring/ summer months. Donations can be dropped into our charity shop in Needham Market or alternatively I am always happy to arrange collection if you give me a call. The charity shop continues to welcome your donations. We have a great selection of fancy dress items and we find we are holding an excellent range of evening and special occasion wear so with the festive season looming do come and browse our stock. We look forward to meeting you and thank you all for your continued support. Best wishes to all, Link Chair Elizabeth Parker, 01449 760343 www.ccllmidsuffolk.org.uk

A CRIME FREE CHRISTMAS Yes please Santa! As Christmas approaches we are all busy rushing around to get everything done; presents to be purchased, office functions, parties to attend and the house to be decorated. A thief loves Christmas too. That’s because it gives them the opportunity to have Christmas on you, in lots of different possible ways!

To ensure that doesn’t happen Suffolk Police is offering the following simple advice to make sure you stay safe and crime free this Christmas. • Parking: Choose a safe place to park (look for a www.parkmark.co.uk accredited car park), physically check your car is locked before you leave it and don’t leave anything attractive to a thief on display within the car which includes presents, keys, satnavs and yes, even a carrier bag. • Purse, wallet or handbag: A handbag on the back of a chair, in a trolley, a purse sitting in an open bag, a wallet in the back pocket, a mobile phone on the table in a restaurant are all calling out to a thief to steal. Don’t make it simple for them by providing the easy opportunity to steal it. If it’s a crowded place or somewhere you are likely to be distracted, you are more at risk. Property mark your items and register them on www.immobilise.com for free along with all your other electrical belongings. • Out for a drink? Enjoy a drink but don’t make yourself vulnerable by drinking too much, tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return, don’t be distracted when using a mobile phone or personal music device, use a reputable taxi company – don’t jump into any car – and if you think your nominated driver has drunk too much, strongly discourage them from driving, and do not get in a vehicle with anyone who you think may have drunk too much to drive. • Home: When you are out, make your house appear occupied (lights on timers, radio on, alarm set), make sure your house, gates and shed/ garage are shut, locked and secure, don’t leave presents under the Christmas tree in full view from the outside, and after Christmas don’t advertise your new goods by displaying the packaging and boxes for rubbish in front of your house – turn the boxes inside out or tear them up and bag them/put them in your wheelie bin. • Social Media: When using Facebook be wary of announcing to the world that you are away and your house is empty, or showing what you got for Christmas. Make sure your profile does not contain private information that would identify you or your address to a stranger. And what should you also do? Do have a wonderful crime free Christmas and Happy New Year! Suffolk Police Crime Reduction

LOCAL AUTHOR PAULINE MANDERS TO SIGN LATEST NOVEL IN HADLEIGH LIBRARY Pauline Manders will be signing copies of her fifth Utterly crime novel, Utterly Knotted, at a ‘meet the author event’ at Hadleigh Library on the morning of Saturday, November 28. Knotweed is invasive and ugly – and so is murder in Suffolk. A body is found near the railway line in Needham Market while Nick, a carpentry apprentice, gets wasted at a gig miles away in Rattlesden. Chrissie, Matt and Nick, friends since their Utterly Academy days, follow trails stretching from Bury St Edmunds to Woodbridge and Felixstowe, and discover murky secrets from an abusive past. Throw into the mix a turkey farm, a winery and a French flea market pot and you have another quirky, witty, fast paced narrative from Pauline Manders. Pauline has been writing crime novels since she retired after a career working in the NHS as an ENT surgeon. She says: “I enjoy reading crime novels and have been inspired by the Suffolk countryside to create characters who become embroiled in crimes and murder against the backdrop of our idyllic rural setting. I attend carpentry classes in Bacton and naturally my main characters are carpentry apprentices from the fictional Utterly Academy in Stowmarket. They are, in the true spirit of crime novels, all mildly flawed, but the detective inspector, rather than being deeply troubled and alcoholic, is normal! My interest in classic cars is also reflected in the novels.” You can find out more about Pauline Manders and her latest Utterly crime novel at: www.paulinemanders.com

On this our 18th Christkindlmarkt, the Friends of Preston St Mary Church is a growing and flourishing society. Many new residents have become Friends since moving into the village in the last few years and we have welcomed their support as well as that of those who live further afield. Since the spate of criminal thefts of lead from church roofs in the surrounding districts, we have become much more aware that the protection of our church is something that unites us all. Whether you are a member of the congregation or just interested in preserving a beautiful and historic grade one listed building you will want to save your church from unnecessary and brutal vandalism. Library News Year 7 pupils have been busy choosing a book from a list of 12 titles suitable for 11-13 year olds which they will be able to keep for free. The scheme is run by Booktrust and is part of a reading programme which supports schools to encourage reading for pleasure, independent choice and develop a whole school reading culture. Pupils were able to watch a video of the 12 authors talking about their books to help them make their choice. The books will arrive within the next couple of months. The books vary in genre and reading ability so every pupil is able to choose a book they will enjoy. Titles include Infinity Drake by John McNally and Cuckoo Song by Frances Hardinge. QUESTIONS ON CASH

with Independent Financial Adviser Nick Plumb

MARRIAGE, MORTGAGES AND MONEY Pre-nuptial financial considerations If you are about to get married, there are a number of financial issues that you should consider. When the honeymoon is over, what are your financial planning priorities and where can you get the best advice? Colin and Sharon are busy planning their forthcoming wedding. They will be buying a new home together soon, and they plan to start a family. Colin is an electrician and Sharon is a part time office assistant. Colin had a flat before he met Sharon, and they plan to keep this and rent it out. They contacted me to discuss how their financial planning needs will change after they marry and move into their new house. First on Colin and Sharon’s checklist was to get the best possible deal on a mortgage for their new home. Choosing the right mortgage can be a minefield. Don’t be tempted by attractive headline rates or discounts now that dramatically increase in later years. Look for a rate that you can afford to pay over the longer-term. For new home owners, a rate that is fixed or capped is a good idea, as this will give you some long term stability and the security of knowing what your mortgage will cost each month. Also, don’t assume that you will get the best deal on a mortgage from your own bank or building society. Most banks and building societies only offer a limited range of their own mortgage products, so although you may have banked there for years, they may not necessarily offer you the best deal. Colin and Sharon have taken their mortgage advice from my colleague, Graham Spearman. Graham is an independent mortgage adviser, and he looked at every lender in the mortgage marketplace to make sure he found the best deal for Colin and Sharon. It’s also important to protect the outstanding mortgage in case either Colin or Sharon were to die. Again, the insurance policy you are offered by your mortgage lender may seem convenient when it is all arranged ‘under the same roof’, but an independent adviser can almost certainly find you a better deal with lower premiums and better benefits. It would also be a good idea for Colin and Sharon to consider adding Critical Illness cover to their mortgage protection policy. Critical Illness cover would pay out the policy sum assured in the event of Colin or Sharon suffering one of around 30 serious illnesses, such as cancer, stroke or heart attack. A lump sum payment that enabled them to pay off their mortgage would be very welcome at such a time, and would enable them to maintain their lifestyle. As Colin works for a small local electrical business, he receives 18

no long-term sick pay benefits. Statutory Sick Pay is not going to replace Colin’s wages if he suffers long term ill health or if he is injured as a result of an accident and is unable to work. As he is likely to be the main source of income into the household when he and Sharon start a family, he should consider taking out some form of income protection cover. This type of policy will replace a large proportion of his income if he cannot work due to long-term ill health or disability. Benefits would usually be paid monthly until Colin was well enough to return to work or until he retired if this was earlier. I would also suggest that Colin and Sharon should re-consider their decision to rent out Colin’s flat. The rental market is not great at the moment, and there is no guarantee that they will find a long-term tenant. That could leave them paying two mortgages on one income. In the longer term, if they buy a new place, the flat would no longer be Colin’s main residence, so it would not qualify for ‘main residence relief’ from Capital Gains Tax. That could leave him facing a hefty tax bill on any future gain in value. If he sells now while it is still his main residence, he will still make a profit of just over £20,000, which could either be used to reduce the mortgage they need for their new home, or could be invested now while the markets are low in order to build up capital for their longer-term future together or for children’s school fees. If they keep the flat, I would suggest that they put it into Sharon’s name as she is a lower rate taxpayer and will actually become a non-taxpayer when she stops work to raise children. That means they will pay less income tax on the rental income ongoing. They should also keep their cash savings at the building society in Sharon’s name when she stops working because, as a non-taxpayer, she will be able to reclaim the tax deducted on those savings. Finally, I have advised Colin and Sharon to make Wills. This is particularly important for them as home-owners and potential parents, as it will ensure that their assets will go to who they would wish on death. ON THE GRAPEVINE IMPROVING YOUR HEARING IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS By Karen Finch RHAD FSHAA FRSA, Audiologist at The Hearing Care Centre There is nothing like the festive season with one social engagement after another. From the Christmas office party, drinks with friends and the buzz of the family gathering on the big day, December is a time for fun and social interaction. But is it? For those experiencing hearing loss, this can be something of an annual nightmare, causing a variety of communication issues! Imagine if you can, being unable to hear speech clearly because Christmas music is being played in the background, or not being able to hear the excitement of children opening presents because they are all talking at once and you cannot separate the sounds clearly. Imagine dreading Christmas dinner on a large table with 15 other people because you won’t be able to hear what is being said around you. These are issues a normal hearing person doesn’t normally even consider. Over 119,000 people in Suffolk have a hearing loss but the number is far smaller for those who have sought professional help from their local audiologist. Hearing aids can make such a difference to someone's quality of life at this time of year. Hearing aids are so much smaller and discreet than they ever used to be and packed full of amazing features that will help during the festive period.

You may have thought that with so much noise at a party or family dinner, hearing aids would just make things louder, but modern digital hearing aids aren’t simple sound amplifiers. They are designed to filter out all the unwanted noise – like the clanging of dishes in the kitchen or the background music – and help you focus on speech. Features such as directional microphones work to reduce the amount of noise allowed to enter your hearing aids. In noisy environments, like at a Christmas party, the system will work to pick up the least amount of noise. If the noise is located behind you, your directional microphones will adapt to pick up sound from in front of you and dampen noise from behind you. If you or someone you know is struggling with hearing problems, don’t struggle through another festive season not being able to join in and have fun. I urge you to book a hearing test now and find out what could be done to help you in time for Christmas. Karen Finch is the managing director and lead audiologist at The Hearing Care Centre. The multi-award winning, family-run company has 20 centres across Suffolk and Norfolk. For more information visit www.hearingcarecentre.co.uk or call 01473 230330.

IN THE NIGHT SKY By Neil Norman

Uranus November 22 sees a golden opportunity for us to see the seventh Planet from the sun, Uranus. On this night the moon will act as the perfect signpost because (as can be seen in the graphic above) the planet Uranus is slightly above and to the right of an 87% illuminated moon high up in the southern sky at 8pm.

13, 1781 but he reported it as a comet! It soon became obvious that the object moved in a near circular orbit, and so it was realised this was a new planet.

planet revolves around the sun on its back. For 42 years the north pole is bathed in permanent light, then for the second 42 years its southern pole is bathed in total sunlight. The composition of the planet consists of three layers: a rocky (silicate / iron-nickel) core at its centre, an icy mantle in the middle and an outer envelope of hydrogen and helium. Hydrogen comprises 83% of the atmosphere and helium 15%. The third most abundant element is methane ice which accounts for 2.3% of its composition and also accounts for the plane’ts aquamarine colour.

Though technically a naked eye object, a pair of binoculars will be needed to see the planet past the glare of the moon. To know you're seen the planet, remember that the planet won't twinkle like a star, it will appear as a small blueish point source of light. Uranus was the first planet to be discovered by telescopic aid by Sir William Herschel on March

In Touch with Hadleigh

As can be seen here, Uranus is four times the size of Earth and has 63x our volume. Its distance also varies greatly from the sun with a range from 18.28 AU (2,735,118,100 KM) to 20.09 AU (3,006,224,700 KM) at aphelion (farthest point from the sun). The planet takes 84 years to orbit the sun once and the day length is 17 hours 14 minutes. The unusual part of Uranus is that it is tilted on its axis at 98 degrees. This means that the poles are pointing towards the sun and the

Uranus has a total of 27 moons and even has very faint rings circulating around it, though these cannot be seen unless one has access to the Hubble Space Telescope! So that's Uranus, a planet not seen by many apart from the dedicated astronomer but one you can now tick off your solar system checklist. Until next month, clear skies. ON THE GRAPEVINE KENNY’S SESAW NEWS Dog gone it! That cat’s done it again! While I was recovering from meeting and greeting, Ollie (the Black) slipped in with last month’s news. Mind you, he doesn’t do a bad job (with mum’s supervision of course) and I’m too excited about the 2016 calendar to worry. There are some smashing photos of great looking ex-SESAW dogs (and cats). You can buy it at our Christmas Fair in the Old School, Long Melford on November 15, order it on 07576 927741, email pfrenchm@aol.com or call into SESAW during opening hours. Maybe next year some of our current dogs will be featured, speaking of which, do you know Blaze (pictured here)? He is a typical ‘in your face’, lick-lick-giz-a-cuddle boisterous Staffie thug. Loves everybody and everything. Blaze is currently in a foster home with two other dogs, several cats and a toddler. He is desperate for a home of his own and someone to love him and take him for nice long walks. Anyway I don’t want him here as he would soon scoff Wendy’s wonderful doggy deli treats. They are absolutely scrumptious and I can’t afford to share them with more dogs. I’ve heard she will be making some for our Christmas Fair. Make sure you get them before mum buys the lot for me. ON THE GRAPEVINE JOIN THE NEON PARTY AND CELEBRATE 10 YEARS OF THE MIDNIGHT WALK Next year marks the 10th birthday of St Elizabeth Hospice’s biggest event of the year, the Midnight Walk. Men and women are urged to unite for one night to show their support for all those in Suffolk affected by hospice care. 2016’s Midnight Walk will have a neon theme to celebrate its 10th birthday and there will be a host of entertainment, including music and fun packed activities to get the party started on the night. There will be two circular routes to choose from, a five mile or a new, special 10 mile, both starting and finishing at Ipswich Town Football Club – and if you sign up now you can save £5 with the early bird offer! Catherine Sheppard, event organiser, said: “We are very excited to have launched our 10th Midnight Walk and we hope this year will be the biggest and best yet, with previous and new participants joining us for this fantastic fundraiser. We would love everyone who has ever taken part in the Midnight Walk to come along again and walk with us for this special year and to bring along all their friends, family, colleagues and neighbours. “It really will be a party atmosphere and we’ve got lots of entertainment lined up to get the crowd warmed up before they set off on their five or 10 mile walks.” The local charity launched its 10th Midnight Walk at Ipswich Town Football Club, where the event starts and finishes, with help from local people who have taken part over the years. Danny Jones, Dawn Easter, Tracy New, Hannah Graves and Steve Banks (pictured above) have all walked the Midnight Walk previously for St Elizabeth Hospice and were all eager to get involved in the launch and support the hospice again in any way they could. Dawn Easter is one of the hospice’s longest serving volunteers and has supported the charity for more than 26 years. She said: “I’ve walked the Midnight Walk six or seven times. It’s always

good fun! I’ve often walked on my own in the past but I always spot someone I know and have a chat. I’m thinking of getting a team together for this year as it’s a special birthday year – the 10th Midnight Walk! The best thing about it is the sense of camaraderie. It’s a really good night out and everyone has a good time.” Both routes will both poignantly pass the hospice in Foxhall Road, Ipswich, where all participants will have the opportunity to hang a personalised tag on the Tree of Remembrance. All participants will receive an exclusive, neon Midnight Walk 2016 T-shirt, a special edition 10th birthday medal and a hot chocolate at the finish line. Everyone is asked to raise as much sponsorship as they can. By raising £100 you can help provide five hours of nursing care and ensure a patient doesn’t have to face their illness alone. You can save £5 and register for just £10 with the early bird offer before January 31, 2016. Be part of Suffolk’s biggest celebration of life and sign up now at www. midnightwalkipswich.co.uk or call 01473 707043 or email midnightwalk@ stelizabethhospice.org.uk to request a paper form.

ELMSETT METHODIST FROM BROKENESS TO WHOLENESS Have you ever broken something that you treasured, or worse still someone else has broken it and didn’t realise it was precious to you? What do you do? Depending on how badly it’s broken you might gather up the pieces and lovingly and carefully glue them back together. We have a few family treasures that have been repaired several times. They have little commercial value, but they are precious to us. If however you dropped a clay flower pot that broke into shards, you probably wouldn’t give it a second thought, but would sweep up the bits and put them in the bin. Many people feel bruised and broken by life. It may be the feeling of rejection from being an unwanted pregnancy or you are part of a broken relationship. Perhaps someone you trusted was unfaithful or you suffered a financial crash. Illness or death of a close friend or relative has broken you. Some have been bullied at work or in school or hurtful, abusive words have been spoken. Many things can cause us to feel broken, like shards, just to be swept up and thrown away. Sometimes we despair of ever being able to rebuild our lives.

Indeed he turns conventional wisdom on its head, as often it is those who have been through difficult times who are the more able to help others. Henri Nouwen describes it as ‘The Wounded Healer’. God is in the business of restoring broken lives, he is looking to heal, renew and make us whole. And he often uses those of us who have been through some brokenness to share in that healing process. I would reaffirm David’s words: “He is there to rescue all who are discouraged.” I would affirm that you are precious to God, he doesn’t wish to discard you. He is waiting for you to respond. It is often helpful to have someone journey with you. If you wish to start a conversation please be in touch, or come to a Healing Service at Capel Methodist Church at 6.30pm on November 8. The Rev Andrew Sankey, Minister at Elmsett and Capel Methodist Churches 8 Roundridge Road, Capel St Mary IP9 2UG apsankey@gmail.com / 01473 311178 / 07726 299968 Services in November

David was broken by life, he felt shattered by events. He complained to God: “I have been ignored as if I were dead, as if I were a broken pot.” Although he was King of Israel, he saw no hope of his life being put together again. As he continued in relationship with God eventually he was able to say: “You answered my prayer when I shouted for help.”

Sunday 1

9.45am, Communion with The Rev Andrew Sankey 6.30pm, Worship with Martin Ellis

Sunday 8

9.30am, Remembrance Service at St Peters 6.30pm, Worship with The Rev Diane Smith

David discovered that he was precious to God, who was prepared for the patient task of rebuilding someone. Having had that help from God to rebuild his broken life he said to others who were broken: “The Lord is there to rescue all who are discouraged and have given up hope.” He was speaking as someone who had been rescued and because the Lord had done it for him, so He could do it for all who turned to Him.

Sunday 15 9.45am, Worship with Geoff Wilson 6.30pm, Communion with The Rev Andrew Sankey

Paul also knew what it was to be hard pressed but never crushed – he talked about being fragile, like clay jars, but having this treasure inside.
