In Touch online:
A WORD FROM THE EDITOR I went along to an e-safety workshop for parents at Jack’s school last week and I’m still shaking my head in horror. I’m relatively tech-savvy, or at least I though I was, but I’m not what they call a ‘digital native’, i.e. a person born or brought up in the age of digital technology and familiar with computers and the internet from an early age. In fact I can remember being introduced to a fax machine in my first year at university and being utterly amazed that we could send a sheet of paper from one side of the room to the other! Those of us who aren’t digital natives acknowledge the wonder of digital technology and most of us use it daily, some more effectively that others, but I don’t suppose I will ever truly appreciate how ‘normal’ it is for natives like Jack. That said it is my responsibility to protect him from the negative aspects of digital communication – such as the possibility that someone could be watching him through the webcam on my iPad using a remote access tool! How creepy is that? Taking what I’d learned at the e-safety session I went into Settings on the iPad and set all the appropriate restrictions. I also downloaded a child-friendly version of YouTube called YouTube Kids and a child-friendly browser. Jack hasn’t actually noticed the difference yet, but I know he’s not going to be bombarded with inappropriate content or accidentally follow links to sites which aren’t age appropriate. For now he’s safe, but kids being kids, I know he will challenge the boundaries and find ways to circumvent my efforts to control his digital adventures so I have to stay one step ahead at all times. Ironically there are some very useful websites you can visit to learn more about setting restrictions and understanding how young people use social media. The e-safety session ended with a question: “Would you abandon your children in central London unsupervised and unaccompanied?” If No is your answer, find out what you can do to protect them online.

NEWS COMBS FORD PRIMARY SCHOOL A project is underway at Combs Ford Primary School to transform an old twin mobile classroom unit into a modern fully equipped facility for wraparound care. There is a growing need for working parents to have somewhere safe for their children to be looked after both before school and at the end of the school day. In order to provide this, the school is looking for help to refurbish and modernise their mobile classrooms which are no longer used for lessons.
Many local businesses have already pledged to help, providing either materials at low or no cost, as well as offers of free labour to carry out the transformation. The plans are quite grand: • All new insulation and a modern heating system • Redecoration throughout • Replacing all door and windows with new double glazed units • New floors • Updating the toilet facilities to include disabled access • A new entrance to allow fully independent disabled access Wraparound care will run throughout term time from approximately 7.45am until the start of school, then again at the end of school until 6pm. With the exception of Christmas, there will also be a holiday club so working parents can continue to work during school holidays without disruption. In addition to wraparound care provision, there will be a nursery run on site with spaces for pre-school children right up to school age. All of this provision is to be managed on behalf of the school by a local company that already provides child care. The owners of Buttercup Nursery will be moving from their current premises and onto the school site in August 2016, with the new provision being up and running by September 2016. So, it’s all hands to the deck as the school and local businesses embark on a DIY SOS style challenge on the scale that Nick Knowles of the TV show would be proud of. Between now and the end of the school year there are many busy weekends ahead, but the time and effort will all be worth it to see the transformation take place and the new facilities ready for use. NEWS STOWMARKET HIGH SCHOOL RECEIVES SALVATION ARMY LAUNCHES NEW PLATINUM CARERS AWARD EMERGENCY RESPONSE VEHICLE The Salvation Army’s new emergency response unit to support emergency service personnel and the community was launched in January. The Salvation Army’s previous emergency response vehicle attended 210 events and emergencies, providing hot food and drink to emergency personnel such as the fire service, the police and the council’s emergency response team. This saw Salvation Army volunteers and officers serving those working on the front line and the community in emergencies from large fires to hunts for missing people, floods or even providing support for people at sporting events. The replacement vehicle is funded by Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service and The Salvation Army after the previous van became unreliable after 13 years of use. The vehicle is based at Stowmarket Fire Station. Lorraine Welham receiving the award from Lucy Farrell, supported by some of the young carers who have benefited from her work Students and staff at Stowmarket High School are celebrating after winning a prestigious award for the quality of support and guidance given to young carers within the school. Lucy Farrell from Suffolk Young Carers presented the Platinum Award to Stowmarket’s lead teacher, Lorraine Welham, at a staff meeting on Monday, February 1. Lucy explained: “There are only three other schools in Suffolk who have achieved this award, and recently the criteria was made much more challenging, so to achieve it is a real credit to Lorraine and the school.” Mrs Welham, who also teaches health and social care, won an award at last year’s Raising the Bar ceremony, again for her work with Young Carers. On receiving the platinum award, she said: “I am obviously delighted to accept this on behalf of the school. These young people are exceptional in how they face the challenges presented to them, and it is a delight to work with them. Winning such an award is lovely, but it doesn’t mean we rest on our laurels. We are extending what we do with our young carers out to other disadvantaged students to give them the very best life chances.”
STOWMARKET CARNIVAL
Mike Baker, The Salvation Army’s Emergency Response Co-ordinator for Suffolk, said: “The Salvation Army has a long history of supporting the community in times of need. People think it is God’s work with its sleeves rolled up. We are in partnership with the fire services – they support the community and we are pleased to support them. As a church and a charity The Salvation Army is dedicated to providing compassionate support, a listening ear and practical help to those in need in the community, and see our support of emergency personnel and the local community at emergencies as a vital part of our work.” Since 1978, The Salvation Army’s emergency response team in Suffolk has supported 28,685 emergency personnel and members of the public, served more than 51,331 hot and cold drinks, made 3,487 loaves of bread into sandwiches and served 2,300 hot meals. Major Derek Jones, The Salvation Army’s Divisional Commander for its Anglia division, said: “The dedication of Salvation Army volunteers and officers in this emergency services support is a real asset. They respond and serve at any time of the day or night to support emergency services personnel working at the front line with hot drinks, soup, sandwiches or hot dogs. The emergency services often put their lives at risks to support people in the community during fires and floods, and we look to do what we can to make their time easier while serving, while also supporting the local community.”

The awards were presented by Stowmarket Deputy Town Mayor Councillor Barry Humphreys MBE who attended with his wife Tracy. Our annual Easter Bunny Chocolate Bingo is on Saturday, March 5. Please get your tickets early to avoid disappointment. It’s not your normal bingo! Using a big screen all the bingo numbers are called by celebrity voices such as Michael Cane, Victor Meldrew, Ozzie Osborne and others. Prizes are given for one line, two lines and a full house and everything is of course chocolate related. That doesn’t mean to say it’s all edible chocolate! We have in the past had chocolate smelling socks, Charlie & The Chocolate Factory DVDs and Hot Chocolate CD’s to name a few. Of the six games of the evening, game three will be for children only. Cards for games one to five are £1 each and for game six they will be £3 each as the full house prize is £100 cash! Can you help us to help our children? As many of you may know, the children arrive with only the clothes they are wearing. We are busy collecting ‘nearly new’ items which we give to the children at a clothing party the day after arrival. They take clothes not only for themselves but also for siblings at home. If you have any clothing suitable for ages six to 13 that you would like to donate we would be extremely grateful. Donations can be left at the charity shop or collected by calling the numbers as given above. We also give each child a selection of basic medical items to take home with them, any of which are either not available to them, of inferior quality to our products or just not affordable. If you could donate any of the items listed below it would be a tremendous help. No donation is too small and everything is really appreciated: We are collecting: plasters, blister plaster, Lemsip, paracetamol (caplets not capsules so can be halved), ibuprofen (caplets not capsules so can be halved), Lockets or Strepsils throat sweets, thermometers, mouth ulcer cream for children, decongestant capsules or drops, vapour rub, menthol nasal sticks, cold sore cream, Drapolene cream, menthol crystals, lip chap sticks and Immodium. If you are interested in finding out more about the charity, our charity shop, hosting or helping with the children please do feel free to get in touch. Best wishes to all and thank you, Link Chair Elizabeth Parker 01449 760343 / 07771 550868 www.ccllmidsuffolk.org.uk

PERSONAL ADVICE, HEALTH & BEAUTY
THINK YOURSELF BETTER We have all seen some of our favourite sports stars on the start line, or about to make that penalty kick eyes closed, gently bobbing and moving around. Seems strange what they are doing – is it a strange ritualistic offering to the Gods, a touch of obsessive compulsive disorder or something different altogether? Mostly it is something altogether different. They are going through a process called explicit motor imagery. It’s a way of rehearsing what they want their body to do in a few moments time. By mentally practising they are more likely to have a successful outcome when they then undertake the task.

It’s not just sportspeople who can benefit from this type of mental brain training, anyone who is injured and in pain can get some added benefits to their treatment by the use of mental imagery. Sounds a bit weird and whacky, but bear with us on this one. Before we move our brain processes all kinds of information to help plan and prepare for what’s needed to complete the task ahead. After an injury or with people in pain for a long time, the areas of the brain involved in the planning and carrying out of movements can become reduced in size and not function so well. This can lead to a reduction in function and a greater chance of becoming injured again. If we cannot protect our body when we move we increase the chance of damaging tissue. By mentally picturing movement, areas of the brain engage as if we were actually moving around. The brain doesn’t activate as much as if we were actually moving but it does still have an effect by imagining movement. It can also trigger a response around the body as if we have actually been exercising. So thinking about doing activity, while not as good as actually taking part, can help to keep some fitness going if you are injured. Our brains are very powerful things and stimulated in the right way they can send signals out to the rest of the body to get a response. It appears though that attention to the details is really, really important. Rather than just seeing yourself moving or playing a sport in a black room, you really need to concentrate on the little things around you, such as the type of clouds in the sky, the feel and sound of the ground underneath you, which side of your face does the breeze strike and how cold does it feel. You don’t need to spend long each day mentally picturing you moving. In fact, for those who have been in pain for a while, they should be careful of how long they do it for as it has been known to even make swelling of a body part worse. So if you are currently injured or next time you have a lay-up with pain, try thinking positive and imagine your body moving freely, easily and pain free and you might be surprised how you can get better quicker. NEWS CONSERVATIVE & INDEPENDENT GROUP COUNCILLORS / STOWMARKET WARDS LOCALITY BUDGETS Deciding the locality budget was rather like the veritable squeezing of a quart into a pint pot despite the combined pool of £35,000 that the Conservative and Independent Group had to distribute to projects in the Stowmarket area. We had a total of 26 requests from 25 organisations to fund projects totaling £202,056. However, the actual total amount requested towards these projects was a more modest £75,367. This still amounted to more than twice the money we had to support these projects. In the end, after what was a calm and considered deliberation, our group made donations to 21 of the 26 projects. Of these, 13 of the 26 requests were met in full and a further five received 50% or more of what they asked for. These requests for funding had to tie in with the three strategic priorities of the district and by far the one cited the most was Strong & Healthy Communities followed by Economy & Environment. FIRE SAFETY ABOVE COMMERCIAL PROPERTIES The Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service is working with all local authorities in Suffolk to ensure that people living above commercial premises are safe from fire. Currently joint inspections with our Private Sector Housing teams are being carried out to identify properties at risk. A number of our towns will be surveyed aver the next few months. Sudbury has just about been completed and Stowmarket will be next. A number of properties that were identified were found to have no fire precautions of any type. Officers from both services are working with the landlords to rectify this. This is a great example of joint working between the two services which is leading to greater cooperation and understanding of each other’s role. SAFE NEIGHBOURHOOD TEAMS (SNT) At the last SNT meeting held at the town council offices at the end of January, police confirmed that there will be fewer officers and PCSOs covering the district. They will be dealing with a smaller range of issues so the overall level of service will remain the same. They are working on a number of campaigns to raise awareness of issues such as arson and thefts from cars that are on the increase in Stowmarket. The police are also very keen to understand what the community’s priorities are and will use future SNT meetings to gather this information. As part of this realignment of the local service, Stowmarket Police Station will close to public access but will still be used by officers. TOWN COUNCIL BUDGET Everyone will be very much aware that local government finances have come under increasing pressure in recent years. Stowmarket is no different and we are facing unprecedented financial pressures that are outside of our control. So while an increase was expected, it is the
first significant increase of the precept in over a decade by the town council. The increase is less than 15p per week for most properties and all the money will be used to support our growing town. We have some big and exciting plans for Stowmarket and we need to put in place the appropriate funding to be able to deliver them. Major projects include the proposed expansion of the Regal Theatre and the provision of a 3G artificial pitch for football which will also cater for other sports groups in the town. Both of these projects will enhance the appeal of the town and put us on the map as a regional centre of excellence for youth football. WATTISHAM VISIT The Stowmarket and District Conservative branch together with the Hadleigh group enjoyed a very interesting trip to Wattisham Airbase. Organised by District Councillor Barry Humphreys, we had a curry lunch in the officer’s mess followed by a superb presentation by him about the Apache helicopter which we see frequently in the skies above our county. We then visited the on site museum and finally had the delight of actually getting up close and personal with some of the Paul Ekpenyong in the Apache cockpit Apache helicopters. It was a truly fantastic day out and opened our eyes to the amazing technologies involved with these machines and the skill and constant training the pilots have to undergo. CLEAN FOR THE QUEEN Finally, the town and district councils are taking part in Clean for The Queen which brings together all the anti-litter organisations in the UK. It aims to get people involved in the largest ever community-inspired action against litter. The plan is for a series of litter picks and events to take place over the coming weeks, with the main events organised for the weekend of March 4-6. The celebration of the Queen’s 90th birthday will be from May 12-15 so we want everybody to take in part in this and make her proud of us as well as our town. Until next time… Your Conservative and Independent Group councillors in Stowmarket are Lesley Mayes, Gerard Brewster, Paul Ekpenyong, Gary Green, Nick Gowrley, Barry Humphreys and Dave Muller.

NEWS REPORT FROM KEITH WELHAM
District Councillor for Stowupland Ward Housing remains a key concern at MSDC. There is a desperate need for houses for local people and there is pressure from developers to gain permissions for housing developments in all parts of the district. Councillors have a duty to protect the countryside from unsuitable developments and councillors take this duty very seriously. What makes the whole planning process more difficult is the lack of a five year supply of housing land in Mid Suffolk. Within every planning authority area there should be available sufficient land for housebuilding to cover the next five years. The land should have planning permission or be already allocated for housing in a local plan, and have a landowner willing to see the land developed within that five year period. Until we have a five year land supply we will be likely to see applications coming in for speculative developments, such as the Gladman application for 190 homes in Stowupland. This application, and a subsequent application for 175 homes on the same site, attracted huge numbers of objections; the applications were rejected but the applicants have appealed those decisions. The parish council has arranged a public meeting to be held on Friday, March 4 at 7pm in the village hall to inform residents of how they can continue to be involved in fighting these proposals. I hope as many residents as possible will come along. I need to hear residents’ views before I prepare the statement that I will make at the inquiry. The inquiry will be held in Stowupland Village Hall from Tuesday, April 26. Further details will be available nearer the date.
STOWUPLAND PARISH COUNCIL NEWS The parish council has been notified of a planning application for 75 homes on land that fronts B1115 and Thorney Green Road. Access for the development would be off B1115 part way between Dents Corner and the bridge over A14. Plans of the proposals will be displayed in the village hall on Friday, March 4 from 4-7pm. A public meeting will then follow from 7-9pm and will cover two topics – this new application and preparation for the public inquiry into the refusal by MSDC of the applications made by Gladman of housing development on land between Church Road and Gipping Road.
The public inquiry into the refusal of planning permission for the Gladman proposals will take place in Stowupland Village Hall from April 26. The parish council would like as many residents as can do so to come to the meeting on March 4 to discuss how best to impress upon the Inspector at the inquiry how strongly the village objects to these proposals. Community Events in Stowupland The regular bingo evenings start again on Friday, March 25 at 7.30pm in the village hall and will be held on the last Friday in April, May and June. Doors open at 7pm.
As many of you will already know, central government has imposed a 1% cut on council house rents, and a further 1% for 2017/18. They are also cutting the grant that they make to MSDC so an increase in the MSDC element of council tax is necessary, despite the savings already made and others that will have to be made and some services will cost more.
The next pub style quiz will be on Friday, March 18 in the village hall. Teams of up to six, £2 per person. Bring your own drink and nibbles. For further information, or to register your team, please contact Keith Welham: 01449 673185
On the more positive side, I am pleased to report that I have been able to provide funds from my locality award allocation to Telstar, planned improvements to the PlayPark, the outdoor bowls club and to our preschool. Cheques should be received by the end of March.
Music Day on The Green The parish council has teamed up with the Trust Maria charity and we are hoping to hold Music Day on The Green on Saturday, June 25. We are currently planning and obtaining the licence needed to hold the event. More details will be available next month.

FORMING A COMPANY By Robert Jackson of Gudgeons Prentice Solicitors
There are various ways to structure a small business, the most common being either as a sole trader, partnership, or a limited company. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages, but this month I am going to look briefly at forming a company, and the sort of information needed in order to do so. A company is a legal structure in its own right, run by an individual or individuals acting as directors. The company itself is owned by the shareholders, who might number one or two individuals, or more. Once a company has been selected as the appropriate business model, early decisions will need to be taken as to who will act as directors, and company secretary if one is required. The company name will need to be chosen carefully, perhaps to reflect the nature of the business involved. It’s possible to check at Companies House
12
whether a particular name is available. A company will also need a registered office, i.e. a place where incoming notices and letters are to be sent. It’s important to choose wisely, so that vital deadlines are not missed. Once the basic decisions have been made, the company can be formed either directly with Companies House or via a specialist company formation agent, of which there are many. The advantage of the latter is that they will ensure that all of the necessary formalities are dealt with in order to ensure that any company law requirements are dealt with. This comes at a price, of course.

OUT & ABOUT THE REGAL IN MARCH At The Regal we always endeavour to show you the year’s best films. The only problem is that a disproportionate number of these films are released in the three month period between January and March which means we’re showing no fewer than 17 different films during March. We’ve also managed to squeeze in three live shows and three event cinema screenings, not bad for an 80-year-old single screened cinema! Micheal Caine is back on top form in Youth. A retired orchestra conductor is on holiday with his daughter and his film director best friend in the Alps when he receives an invitation from Queen Elizabeth II to perform for Prince Philip’s birthday. Sylvester Stallone said he’d never make another Rocky film, but then received the script (and cheque) for Creed and changed his mind! The former World Heavyweight Champion Rocky Balboa serves as a trainer and mentor to Adonis Johnson, the son of his late friend and former rival Apollo Creed. The 33 is based on the real-life event, set in Chile in 2010 when a gold and copper mine collapsed and trapped 33 miners underground for 69 days. In 1947, Dalton Trumbo was Hollywood’s top screenwriter until he and other artists were jailed and blacklisted for belonging to the Communist Party. Trumbo recounts how Dalton used words and wit to win two Academy Awards and expose the absurdity and injustice under the blacklist which entangled everyone from gossip columnist Hedda Hopper (played by Helen Mirren) to John Wayne, Kirk Douglas and Otto Preminger. Spotlight tells the true story of how the Boston Globe uncovered the massive scandal of child molestation and cover-up within the local Catholic Archdiocese, shaking the entire Catholic Church to its core. Room is based on the best selling novel by the same name. After fiveyear-old Jack and his mother escape from the enclosed surroundings that Jack has known his entire life, the boy makes a thrilling discovery. Next up we have Marvel’s latest superhero movie, but Deadpool is most
www.keepingintouchwith.com/stowmarket
definitely not one for the kids. A former Special Forces operative turned mercenary is subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers… and a bad sense of humour! Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson and Will Ferrell are back in Zoolander 2. Derek and Hansel are modelling again when an opposing company attempts to take them out of the business. We first showed Kate Winslet’s labour of love The Dress Maker in January and it was very well received, so we’re giving you one last chance to see it on the big screen. Following numerous awards and six sell-out screenings at The Regal, The Danish Girl is back for four days. Don’t miss it. Heralded by many Regal Royalty Card holders as the best film of 2016 (so far), The Revenant is back for two days so you can see just what all the fuss is about! Hail, Caesar!, directed by the Cohen Brother and starring George Clooney, Ralph Fiennes, Tilda Swinton, Josh Brolin and Scarlett Johansson, follows 1950’s Hollywood Fixer Eddie Mannix as he works to keep the studio’s film stars in line. Tilda Swinton and Ralph Fiennes are also in A Bigger Splash. The vacation of a famous rock star and a filmmaker is disrupted by the unexpected visit of an old friend and his daughter. Goosebumps is based on the best selling children’s books. A teenager teams up with the daughter of young adult horror author R. L. Stine after the writer’s imaginary demons are set free on the town of Madison, Delaware. The Regal is already great value for money but you’ll be pleased to know that Spring Saver 2016 cards go on sale on March 11 and are valid from April 8. See page 14 for a detailed shedule.

OUT & ABOUT A HUSBAND, A WIFE, A MISTRESS... AND A MURDER!
BRAVO THEATRE WORKSHOPS Local performing arts students were celebrating after a second round of excellent exam results.
The students, who attend Bravo Theatre Workshops in Stowmarket, took exams in acting and reciting verse offered by LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts), and all received Merits and Distinctions, with one group achieving 100%! (l-r): Karen Holt (Angie Welham-Hagan), Howard Holt (Jon Wray) and Julie Grant (Jo Chadwick) Stowmarket Operatic & Dramatic Society’s spring play is the thriller Something To Hide by Leslie Sands. If you enjoy crime stories, this one is un-missable! The plot twists and turns repeatedly, each time in an unexpected direction that will leave you wondering just what will happen next. It’s a gripping murder mystery set in a converted toll house in a small Essex village, the part-time home of successful novelist Howard Holt and his wife Karen, who is also his publisher. The intriguing and compelling plot begins when Karen arrives home in her car, unexpectedly, late one night and accidentally runs over Howard’s mistress. The arrival of a detective investigating seemingly unrelated matters triggers the increase in tension which builds to an almost unbearable pitch!
Their Ipswich-based LAMDA teacher, Tara Fields, said: “We are so proud of them all. These students have only been studying for just over a year, and to achieve marks in the eighties and nineties is amazing, but I’ve never heard of anyone receiving 100% before. LAMDA is a great way for students to gain in confidence, improve in their schoolwork and become better communicators.” Bravo Theatre Workshops offer a range of performing arts classes, including LAMDA, in the Stowmarket and Newmarket areas. EVENTS FOR ALL AT RED GABLES
Monday, March 21: Three Into One Does Go – mini-talks by SLHG members, arranged by Neil Langridge
On Tuesday, March 29 from 11am we are holding the Bring Your Bike to Red Gables event. Everyone is welcome to attend and it’s being held in the Easter holidays so that families can attend. We want to promote greater use of bikes in Stowmarket and are having cycle stands installed on the premises to encourage this. We are also organising several activities over the lunchtime period. Bartons Bicycles are holding a workshop on basic bike maintenance and Mid Suffolk’s Community Safety Team will be attending to offer post code marking on bikes. We are also having the Wattbike available for people to try out. This is a special training bike designed by British Cycling. It measures power output, speed, distance, pedalling technique and much more. This event has been made possible with funding from Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Council’s Year of Cycling campaign.

STOWMARKET ROTARY CLUB Mr Jon Beale, managing director of Standing Voice, addressed the club on February 1. Standing Voice designs and delivers health, advocacy and community initiatives reaching thousands of people with albinism across Africa. Albinism is a melanin deficiency causing visual impairment and eliminates any natural defence against sun damage. This affects one in 1,400 people in parts of Tanzania. These young people are ostracised by their village. Standing Voice concentrates on educating the local people to accept them and works alongside the disempowered giving them vital tools and platforms to speak back to their societies and reassert their presence and equality. A very informative evening.
On Friday, April 29 we are planning an event of interest to everyone who enjoys good local entertainment. The Perennial Mr Potter, alias Bryan Thurlow, will be talking about his life in the 1900s as a full time gardener in a large Suffolk Garden. Mr Potter will share his passion for plants and his dream of restoring a much neglected old knot garden. The event will be held in the Old Library and starts at 7pm. Tickets are £5 and can be purchased from Red Gables or Stowmarket Town Council Office on Milton Road South during office hours. The Garden Project volunteers will also share their plans for the gardens and spinney. This event is being held to raise funds for these improvements. For more information about both events please contact: 01449 673947 / contact@redgables.org.uk
AIR TRAINING CORPS CELEBRATES 75th ANNIVERSARY
On the afternoon of Sunday, February 7, air cadets across the county gathered to celebrate 75 years of the Air Training Corps. (l-r) Rotary President Tom Lund-Lack, Jon Beale and Rotarian Giles Beale
STOWMARKET SUGARCRAFT CLUB Our February meeting was well attended despite it being a very windy evening. We enjoyed a very interesting and entertaining demonstration from Gemma Parker, showing us a deceptively easy technique for applying sugar ruffles to our cakes. Many members went home determined to have a go at this new skill.
Stowmarket, Thurston, Sudbury and Bury squadrons assembled in the picturesque setting of the Abbey Gardens in Bury St Edmunds before marching proudly through the archway and up to St Mary’s Church, saluting the mayor and Squadron Leader Deere as they went. It was a proud moment for many family members, friends and fellow Corps officials.
Our next meeting is on March 14 when our speaker, Caroline Low, will show us how to model a bride and groom to top a wedding cake.
It is always a momentous occasion to gather so many cadets in one area and this was no exception, with more than 150 cadets in attendance including officers, wing commanders and other ATC officials. The church service gave cadets past and present the opportunity to renew their pledge to the Corps. After the ceremony, the cadets gathered at The Athenaeum for tea and cake before dispersing for a well-earned rest.
If you would like to join us, you can be sure of a warm welcome. We meet in St Mary’s Church Hall on Wolsey Road, doors open at 7.15pm for a cup of tea and a chat, with the meeting starting at 7.45pm.
Flt Lt Houghton of Stowmarket 1331 Squadron posted a statement saying: “Well done to all of you today, once again you made me the proudest OC on parade, thank you.”

We had a letter from the Poppy Appeal organiser thanking the women’s section for its help and telling us that Stowmarket has done very well so far. Our speaker for the evening didn’t turn up. Instead, Brenda Farrow, one of our members, told us about the Christmas and New Year holiday she spent in Colombia. Hazel Mann then gave a brief account of a holiday spent in Austria, which wasn’t quite as successful! Shirley Cobbold conducted the draw and several nice prizes were won. Our competition, for a wooden animal, was won by Sheila Orde, with Carole Penton second and Josie Horrex third.

She has had clients from the world of show business including such names as Dame Judi Dench, Maureen Lipman, Norman Wisdom, Roy Castle, Chris Biggins and Victoria Wood amongst many other familiar faces. Pauline is looking forward to the fellowship and helping the many good causes which the club supports. In welcoming her, Peter stated that most of the new members over the past year have been female and this augers very well for the future. He stated: “Rotary is no longer the wholly male preserve it once was, and the future for clubs such as ours is very bright.” If you’d like to sample the great fellowship the club offers, we meet every Thursday evening at the Cedars Hotel in Stowmarket. STOWMARKET AND DISTRICT CAMERA CLUB Our third open competition on January 11 was judged by Peter Espley and as usual he gave a comprehensive critique of the entries. The annual Tripod Competition between Framlingham, Wymondham and hosts Stowmarket took place on January 25. The judge, Brian Carlick LRPS, gave good critique and was generally impressed with the standard of the entries, eight DPIs and eight prints from each club. We failed to beat the invited clubs with Wymondham coming first with 294 points, Framlingham second with 272.5 and Stowmarket third with 269.5 points. The evening was, as usual, a bit of a social event with a buffet provided by Stowmarket. SCHOOLS / SPORT OUR LADY’S PRE-SCHOOL
STOWMARKERS NETBALL CLUB
Our Lady’s Pre-school has been rated ‘Good’ by OFSTED in a fantastic start to the New Year.
Our players are fortunate to have an indoor venue for winter and an outdoor venue for summer and it won’t be long before they move to the summer ground at Needham Market.
The pre-school, which was founded in 1975, is based on Stricklands Road above Our Lady’s Church and we pride ourselves on having a welcoming, friendly atmosphere which helps children thrive in our care. We are a non-denominational charity organisation with a committee of parents, staff and volunteers which has an enthusiastic new chairperson who has lots of exciting plans for the future.
The junior players are taking part in a sponsored walk this Easter, walking from their winter ground to their summer ground to raise money for the club so that they are able to enter into next year’s Disneyland Paris netball tournament. All the players are really keen to go on this trip so the more funds the club makes the better chance they have of being able to enter.
Our brilliant team of highly qualified, fun and caring staff nurtures children from two-anda-half-years old until they leave for primary school and provides the opportunity for children to learn valuable skills to help them to transition smoothly into Reception.
The club takes juniors from eight to 14 years old and has two boys who regularly attend. Although male players are unable to play in any matches other than High 5 they still enjoy coming along each week. Adopting this kind of attitude towards their players is what makes this club so successful. The club welcomes all juniors who want to play this fantastic sport and even gives out rewards at training sessions to keep the players motivated.
The pre-school has a variety of resources for the children to use: toys, books, physical activities and plenty of hands on messy play are all available! In between lots of free play the children are encouraged to participate in class activities and outings and are given a taste of learning in a slightly more structured environment. The children are offered the chance to develop confidence through regular show and tell sessions, which they approach very enthusiastically. Our central location within Stowmarket provides the ideal base for short outings to places such as the library, Museum of East Anglian Life and many more. Our sessions run Monday to Friday, 9.15am to 12.15pm, with lunch club on Thursdays until 1.30pm. Please feel free to drop by for a chat or to contact Cheryl: cherylr@ourladyspreschool.org.uk / 07808 830802 Congratulations to Cheryl and the team on the excellent OFSTED result. This year’s summer fair will be held on July 2 at Meadlands. Everybody is welcome to come along and join the fun.
TRINITY CEVA PRIMARY SCHOOL Reception children and staff at Trinity CEVA Primary School in Stowmarket enjoyed a day out to the Dinosaur Adventure Park in Norwich to round off their dinosaurs topic for half term. The children have been looking at non-fiction books about dinosaurs, finding and sharing facts. They have enjoyed role play through set up areas which have been the home of Harry and the Bucketful of Dinosaurs and an outdoor dinosaur discovery area. The highlight was waiting for their very own dinosaur egg to hatch. Sadly the dinosaur hatched and ran away when the children were at home sleeping one night!
If you are interested in joining the club please contact me via the club’s Facebook page or via: www.stowmarkers-netball-club.co.uk Louise
STOWMARKET TENNIS CLUB In what many regard as a golden era of tennis in this country, the latest statistics show that participation among adults and older teenagers is dropping. This may be true across the country, but at Stowmarket we are busier than ever with club mornings and evenings full nearly all the time and more social play than ever before. The popular junior starter sessions are also busy for this time of year so, once again, we are punching well above our weight compared to other clubs in the region. Due to the increased coverage and publicity generated by the Davis Cup win and the Australian Open, I have been out and about delivering tennis assemblies in local schools. About 600 children have seen these so far with information provided about how to get started at the club. Adults are also included in this promotional push with Cardio classes and evening groups available if you’re keen to get going. Many thanks to all the schools that hosted the assemblies and to all the children who helped with the demonstrations. Your next step is to get down to the club. The popular perception of tennis is of it being a summer only sport which may be partially true at most normal clubs, but not at Stowmarket. We have a winter dome that covers three of our floodlit courts. Competitive and social play continues all year round and it allows new players to join at any time and be guaranteed quality court time. If you are interested in trying tennis for the first time, or wish to re-start after an absence, get in contact with me and there will be a session to suit. See you on court. SPORT AIKIDO BEGINNERS COURSE Satomi Kai Aikido would like to extend a warm welcome to all the new students who joined our beginners course this month. Everyone seems to be enjoying the course and it’s our sincere hope that they’ll continue their aikido practise at our classes long after the course ends. We’d also like to extend our thanks to those of our regular members who have been on hand to help out as the new students get to try a whole range of techniques in what can be quite a complex martial art. Beginners weren’t the only new faces on the mat this month either as we were lucky enough to have a new black belt join the club from the Aikikai in France. It’s always great to have more senior grades to help guide and inspire those working their way up through the belts, but it’s even better when those people come from different backgrounds and different instructors as it brings in new influences and insights to all levels. For anyone interested in trying Aikido, newcomers are always welcome at our normal classes. These run at Mid Suffolk Leisure Centre from 7pm on Sundays or 8.15pm on Thursdays. For more information, please email aikido@precepts.co.uk or visit: www.satomikai.co.uk
SCORPION MARTIAL ARTS ACADEMY This year is the 30th anniversary of WAKO (World Association of Kickboxing Organisations) and Mark JR Trent, head coach at Scorpion Academy and a WAKO member 30 years, was invited to the celebrations where he was presented with his WAKO 8th dan blackbelt certificate. Tenth dan blackbelt grandmaster Brian Dossett made the presentation and he will be travelling to Suffolk later in the year to run another seminar for the academy and invited guests. With the recent release of the new Star Wars film the Scorpion Academy felt it was only appropriate to celebrate the event with a lightsaber training session. Paul Leech, his brother Peter and cousin Terry have a large collection of lightsabers and they kindly allowed us to train with them. Their lightsabers are designed to allow full contact strikes which of course add to the fun. A big turnout of juniors and seniors thoroughly enjoyed the session and a lot of fun and excitement was had. At the end of the junior session parents had the chance to take a photograph of their Jedi Knight son or daughter. A big thank you to senior master Andy Lewis and instructors Mel Walmsley, Dave Fell and Max and Jacob Walmsley for their invaluable help with the juniors. Separate junior and senior classes that are always fun, friendly and exciting run weekly and one-to-one or small group training/self defence is available. STOWMARKET TABLE TENNIS TEAMS ARE BOUNDING TO SUCCESS Stowmarket teams have healthy leads at the top of both divisions one and two of the Bury St Edmunds & District Table Tennis League. Stowmarket Pumas are undefeated after 15 matches and lead their nearest opponents, British Sugar, by a clear 14 points. Lead point scorer Ryan Collins remains unbeaten after 45 games, with Malcolm Collins on 85% victories after 33 games. Division Two is led by compatriots Stowmarket Lynx on 121 points, with fellow Stowmarket team Tigers on 96 points but with a game in hand. Key performers for Lynx have been David Gough with 29 wins from 38 games and Andy Bennett with 23 wins from 26 matches. Tiger’s Jack Samson leads the Division 2 average with 34 wins from 38 games. It’s not only in the Bury St Edmunds & District League that Stowmarket Table Tennis Club has been successful. The Junior teams have been illustrating how the club has created strength in depth. In the Suffolk & Cambridgeshire Border League Division Two, the Stowmarket Slammers came second behind Gazbury Gnats with Joseph Kulesa winning 10 games from 10 matches. In the national Junior League (Eastern Region) Stowmarket juniors have a clear lead going into the fourth and final event. At the recent Suffolk Schools Championships, Jack Samson was runner-up in the Under 19 Boys category, Megan Bollen was runner-up in the Under 19 Girls event, James Davies-Stokes was runner-up in the Under 16 Boys competition, Albert Roberts came third in the Under 13 Boys and finally Luke Davies-Stokes won the Under 13 Boys class and, as a result, qualifies to compete in the Schools National Championships. Tournament success by the club’s young players has been confirmed by England rankings for Lewis Roberts, Luke Davies-Stokes and James Davies-Stokes, all of whom are ranked in the top 50 in their respective age groups.
STOWMARKET CRICKET CLUB The start of the new cricket season is only just round the corner and Stowmarket Cricket Club is keen to attract new members of all ages and abilities. SPORT / CHURCH NEWS STOWMARKET STRIDERS
EASTER AT CEDARS CHURCH Easter is the worldwide celebration of the death and resurrection of Jesus. The most famous verse in the Bible explains why God sent His Son: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16) You could understand it in this way: the greatest person (God), showed the greatest love, to the greatest number (the world) giving the greatest gift (his son) to achieve the greatest deliverance (from eternal death) and grant the greatest possession (eternal life).
GOLDEN MILE RAISES £500 FOR TRUST MARIA
So how are we celebrating this Easter? All are warmly invited to these events:
The second annual Golden Mile raised over £500 which was donated by local running club Stowmarket Striders to hospice fundraisers Trust Maria, a local charity set up by Harvey McSloy in memory of his mother Maria who once ran with Stowmarket Striders. They raise valuable funds to purchase essential equipment for local hospices that’s not yet available to them on the NHS.

The third Golden Mile race will take place on Saturday, September 10, ending at the recreation ground just as the Stowmarket Beach Party festivities kick off. Running over six sessions a week, including an active junior group, Stowmarket Striders Running Club now has over 350 members and offers a varied training programme that teaches technique and form, and features sessions specifically designed to build strength and stamina. STOWMARKET HALF JUNIOR RACES: SUNDAY, MARCH 20 If you love to run then come and join in our junior races at Stowmarket Half Marathon on March 20 from 10.15am.
