Prayers WHEN THE
GO UP,
The Blessings come down
Special Prayer events for 13 year old Mason Ferrulli event has brought the greater Central Valley together and was also shared all over the nation via live stream. Folks from Hawaii to Florida, Maine to Washington were connected for one reason, to pray for 13 year old Mason Ferrulli as he continues to battle cancer. Over 300 plus people were gathered in the parking lot of Ripon Fit Nutrition and Sheboba’s on N Wilma Ave in Ripon, Ca (all doing their best to practice social distancing), Phil Waterford President/Owner of Manteca Ford & Exotic Highline arrived in a Rolls Royce SUV carrying precious cargo which included Mason and his parents. Waterford was visibly shaken as he exited the vehicle and described the huge sacrifice Mason made to attend the gathering. Just minutes earlier, Waterford arrived at Mason’s home,Mason’s dad was distraught and said that Mason was not going to be able to attend the prayer service. Upon hearing this, Waterford was filled with concern for Mason and went inside to talk with him.“When I got there he was curled up in the fetal position. He was crying and moaning due to the incredible pain he was in,” Waterford explained. “Mason saw the Henna tattoos that I had freshly inked on my arms and it really captured his attention because one of those tattoos was of him. I explained to Mason that these “Henna tattoos” were TEMPORARY just as the excruciating pain he was enduring and this, too, shall pass. I told him that as people go through this journey in life and as we get older and reflect back, the things that we regret most are not the chances and opportunities we take, it’s the chances and opportunities we don’t take. Then I said, give me your phone. So he unlocked his phone and I went outside and I took some video of the surroundings and the crystal blue sky and I took video of the Rolls Royce. I came back inside and told him that the air quality is better than it’s been in months, the sky is crystal blue, which is something that we take for granted and today is a picture perfect day and it’s going to get even better. Then Mason asked me, “How long do think we will have to be there?” When he said that, I knew his energy was already changing and when we arrived at the event, it was priceless for me to see him go from pain and moaning to ear to ear smiling and joy from the energy of the people that showed up for him.”Community leader, Pastor Mike Dillman always seems to know the right things to say at the right time. He was in attendance and his words

were comforting, accurate, and therapeutic for everyone, most importantly for Mason and his family. Pastor Sam Crivello, who baptized Mason about a year ago, gave a very direct, powerful prayer that resonated and encouraged Mason and his family. Shelly Vieira also spoke at the event and we could definitely feel the presence of the Lord as it was dwelling in that parking lot. She prayed with authority in agreement with the word of God, and there was no doubt as to the will of God as it concerns Mason.”There were a couple of surprises for Mason at the event. Although 13 year old Mason thought he might be the recipient of a brand new Ford Shelby GT 500 as Waterford had a key in his hand and remotely started it, what was really taking place is Waterford’s son, Amare, and daughter, Deziray, were bringing a brand new electric mountain bike that starts with its own key. Waterford mentioned that Mason loves to prank him and his friends so Waterford just had to take this opportunity to prank him back. Mason took it in his typical fashion with a huge smile on his face and he is very excited about the bike. It has left Mason with a burning desire to ride his new bike. Members of the community organized a fund raiser called Fish Melones for Mason. David Coy hosted the event that was put together by Matt Frazier along with Jason Buffalow, Nick Smith, and others. They raised over $61k in one day. In addition, a GoFundMe was also set up that is nearing $40k. “Together, I am certain we will achieve our $100k goal and all of these proceeds go directly to the family to offset the medical expenses that come with Mason’s treatment.” Stated Waterford. The family is grateful for the outpouring of support from the community as well as all those who have organized events to rally that support. Prayer and encouragement are still needed as Mason and his family continue courageously through this journey.

GREAT THINGS
GREAT THINGS COMING TO MANTECA A 500-room mega-resort, California’s first diverging diamond interchange & converting food waste to fuel for municipal solid waste trucks is just the start
Manteca is the little city that can. With a population of 85,000 and growing by an average of 2,000 new residents a year, Manteca is doing things that almost no other city in California is doing. It starts with a private-public sector partnership that is developing a 120-acre family entertain-
ment zone (FEZ) along the 120 Bypass that connects Interstate 5 and Highway 99. Great Wolf Resort The FEZ is bookended by the Great Wolf Indoor Water Park Resort and Big League Dreams.
The 500-room Manteca Great Wolf indoor water park resort is located along the 120 Bypass.
A Plan for Safe, Reliable, Local Electric Service LEARN MORE
The 500-room Great Wolf is expected to draw 500,000 guests a year to enjoy its attractions that range from a 95,000-square-foot indoor water park, family entertainment center featuring everything from bowling for kids to rope courses, as well as six restaurants. The water temperature is kept at a constant 84 degrees — two degrees warmer than the air temperature. That means in the bone-chilling foggy days of winter, a rainy spring day or in the sweltering heat of summer you will always be comfortable hitting the water for aquatic fun. Pricing for rooms that provide two days of water park access are not only competitive and in many cases lower than the per person per day cost of using an outdoor water park but given the controlled environment you can enjoy the water park without massive lines. Big League Dreams Great Wolf joins Big League Dreams sports complex that has been a big hit in Manteca — and the region — since it opened in 2008. It features six replica Major League Baseball playing fields and an indoor soccer arena that attracts 500,000 players and fans each year from throughout Northern California. It is by far the most successful of the 11 BLD complexes in California, Texas, Arizona and Las Vegas in terms of tournament bookings and tournaments. California’s first diverging diamond interchange Manteca just opened the first diverging diamond interchange in California. The interchange at Union Road and the 120 Bypass is designed to reduce the potential for collisions while at the same time improving traffic flow. It also costs significantly less to build based on the need of a smaller footprint than a traditional cloverleaf interchange. With a diverging diamond interchange the flow across the freeway has lanes crossings to the opposite side of Union Road where the ramps are and then crossing back over at the ramps on the other side of the bridge. Where the traffic crisscrosses there are traffic signals. On a traditional overpass turn movements on and off the freeway would also go through the traffic signals. That’s not the case with a diverging diamond interchange. If Union Road was improved to a partial cloverleaf interchange as was originally envisioned there would be 24 conflict points for vehicles. The diverging diamond has 12.

GREAT THINGS
Even more significant is the reduction in the potential for frequent T-Bone crashes that can result in extensive property damage and serious injury. There are 20 such conflicts on a traditional interchange and just two on a diverging diamond. Those two would be where the north and south lanes on Union Road crisscross. Due to the interchange’s geometry the average speed is slowed from 40 mph to 25 mph. Two more major interchanges breaking ground The diverging diamond interchange is just one of three major freeway projects in Manteca. Caltrans is moving forward with a Fall 2021 start on the first phase of a $156 million upgrade to the 120 Bypass/Highway 99 interchange along with the Austin Road interchange. The project will address operational issues to reduce congestion and improve safety. It also opens up a large segment of southeast Manteca to development including the 1,050-acre Austin Road Business Park that includes preapproved zoning for housing for 10,200 residents and 8 million square feet of industrial/business park space along with 3.5 million square feet of commercial. The City of Manteca expects construction to start on a new 120 Bypass at McKinley Avenue by early 2022. Once in place it will open up southwest Manteca to development as well as business parks to the north. When completed, there will be four interchanges a mile apart creating freeway access not

just to land zoned for commercial along the corridor but also more than 7,000 housing units either approved for construction or currently making their way through the approval process. Living Spaces furniture Work has started on constructing the 116,641-square-foot Living Spaces furniture showroom at Union Road and the 120 Bypass Once the $20 million showroom is completed, there will be three major furniture firms within five miles of each other. Living Spaces will actually have the largest square-footage for a furniture showroom in the area. The Living Space structure

is slightly smaller than the Ashley’s Furniture retail outlet and warehouse in Lathrop facing Interstate 5 as well as the 1 million square foot Wayfair distribution center that opened earlier this year along the 120 Bypass in Lathrop. But unlike the others, more than 90 percent of the building’s space is dedicated to a massive showroom. The Living Spaces will have space set aside within the main structure’s footprint for a restaurant to open at a later date. The restaurant in the store is a fairly new concept for Living Spaces. A Texas location features a Beck’s Prime restaurant with patio and a second floor deck for outside dining as well as inside seating. The parking lot will have 456 spaces with 14 percent of them prewired to accommodate charging stations for electric vehicles. As such, it will be the largest charging location in the South County if and when all potential 56 charging stations are put in place. Food waste to fuel The apple cores kids toss into orange garbage cans at Woodward School, spoiled produce tossed out by Food-4-Less, and leftovers cleared from plates at Applebee’s will eventually help take the equivalent of 2,338 vehicles off Northern San Joaquin Valley roads when it comes to air quality impacts. That’s because Manteca is now the second entity in California to convert food waste into fuel in the form of liquefied natural gas to power the city’s fleet of solid waste collection trucks. The other food to fuel conversion facility is in Marin County. The project is the answer to three major problems. One is a state mandate that essentially requires cities to stop burying food waste in landfills. A second state mandate dictates that air quality be improved to 1990 levels or a 40 percent reduction in the current levels of pollutants. The third is a marching order from the Manteca City Council to position solid waste and wastewater operations so they will have the lowest cost to
Manteca ratepayers over the long haul. A mechanical separator removes food waste from contaminates. The machine also grinds the food waste into slurry that is trucked to the wastewater treatment plant. A receiving station and facilities to combine the food waste that also will add FOG — fats, oils, and grease — from restaurants with methane gas from the wastewater treatment process is also part of the process. A compressed gas fueling station was also built at the treatment plant. The city’s solid waste operations will be moved there as well so trucks can be fueled overnight. Two Tesla Supercharging stations Manteca is one of 20 plus cities in California with two Tesla Supercharging stations and the only city with two between Bakersfield and Sacramento. The 20-stall supercharger station along the 120 Bypass in The Promenade Shops at Orchard Valley anchored by Bass Pro Shops at many times during the week is nearly full. In a nod to the strategic location Manteca serves to reach destinations, Tesla invested in a second supercharging station in the city. It was installed along Spreckels Avenue at Historical Plaza Way in the parking lot in front of Target. It has 10 supercharging stalls designed for Tesla and four other charging stations that other electric vehicles can use. The fact Manteca is literally at a major crossroads for the three anchors of the NorCal MegaRegion of 17 million as it is almost equal distance of from San Jose (68 miles), San Francisco (76 miles), and Sacramento (59 miles) bodes well for the city being able to snag tourists and travelers. The city is also 95 miles from Napa Valley and 112 miles from Fresno. Restaurants at Orchard Valley benefit from the roughly 30 minutes it takes to recharge a Tesla. Bass Pro Shops also snags Tesla users that browse the store while it is being charged. The upside for Tesla drivers that will recharge at the Spreckels Avenue location is that there are 29 dining options — including two Starbucks locations and a Jamba Juice — within a two block walk. It is the largest concentration of dining options in Manteca. The area already snags a lot of Bay Area drivers heading to and from the Sierra as well as those traveling Highway 99. A Tesla owner — or owners of other electric vehicles — that are vacationing in Northern California from out of the area could use a hotel in Manteca as a base and reach a wide array of high profile destinations in day trips that are powered by a supercharge in Manteca. That includes the entire San Francisco Bay Area, the Napa Valley wine country, Sacramento, Yosemite Valley, a wide swath of the Southern Sierra, Fresno, and even Monterey.
GREAT THINGS
Living Spaces has broken ground on a 116,641-square-foot showroom along the 120 Bypass at the Union Road exit.
ACE service to Sacramento Passenger train service from the Manteca downtown transit center to Sacramento and San Jose will start in 2023. That is in addition to existing Altamont Corridor Express (ACE) service to San Jose from the Lathrop/Manteca station. The downtown Manteca station will initially be served by three northbound ACE trains originating in Ceres traveling to Natomas north of downtown Sacramento for the morning commute and starting from Sacramento an existing ACE train that originates in Stockton and travels to San Jose. Altogether it will create a heavy rail service that allows commuters to access more than 2.25 million existing jobs with 2.5 miles of 10 existing stations and 16 new stations. The plan also calls for the creation of a transfer
point with a new North Lathrop station on the eastern edge of the SHARPE Depot site next door to Manteca’s city limits. At this point someone catching a train in Ceres, Modesto, Ripon or downtown Manteca could switch to trains to head into San Jose or also continue north into Sacramento. This is also where Valley Link — an effort to provide a connection to BART service that now ends in Dublin’/Pleasanton to Stockton with stops along the way at River Islands, Tracy, and Livermore — will connect with ACE service. Valley Link could be up and running by 2028. The second phase of the ACE portion of the project is targeted to extend service south of Ceres into Merced with stops in Turlock as well as Livingston/Atwater by 2027. The Merced and San Jose stations that ACE connects are also stations for the California High Speed Rail.

GREAT WOLF
GREAT FAMILY FUN AT GREAT WOLF The coolest place on a 105-degree day in the 209 is the same place it will be the warmest on the drabbest day of lingering Tule fog that keeps the temperatures in the 40s round the clock. The place is the Great Wolf Lodge Resort in Manteca. Describing Great Wolf a “just a water park” is about as accurate as describing the imposing El Capitan overlooking Yosemite Valley as “just a rock.” Everything about the Great Wolf in Manteca from the 95,000-square-foot indoor waterpark — the second largest in the 17-location operation being the Anaheim Great Wolf — is tailored so both parents and kids can enjoy their stay at true resort location. Unlike with outdoor water park where you have to deal with wind, scorching sun, chilly weather, oppressive heat, or rain and have a limited mid-spring to late summer window to enjoy it’s always a pleasant 82 degrees with the water two degrees warmer. Extensive skylights keep the water park bright without having to worry about sun burn. But if you want to work on your tan there is a massive outdoor guest pool complete with shelves you can partially submerse yourself in water on a lounge.

system that allows personnel to move guests quickly — and safely — onto the slides. Conveyors take the tubes to the start of the slides. A visit to Great Wolf is designed as a staycation. Accessing the 13 indoor waterpark attractions that are open 24/7, 365 days a year from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily comes with the booking of a room overnight that gives guests two full days of waterpark access. If you opt to access every possible hour you can in the water park, there is a guest luggage storage area and locker rooms or change and shower so before and after your check in and out times you can splash around without packing up your vehicle. And these are just your average hotel rooms. For starters there are 500 rooms making the Great Wolf located along the 120 Bypass on Manteca and accessed by the Airport Way exit the largest hotel ever built in the Great Central Valley stretching from Bakersfield to Redding. Many of the rooms are theme suites with “Wolf Dens” and “Kids Cabins” for children with their own bunk beds and TVs. That way mom and dad can watch Netflix and even opt for in-room alcoholic beverages while the kids can watch cartoons and such in their own suite in a suite. The Great Wolf experience starts when you drive up to the resort that features a northern lodge design. The lobby has a grand fireplace that also serves as the backdrop for the nightly story time featuring Great Wolf characters such as Wiley the Wolf.

Image of the new Great Wolf Manteca include, clockwise from upper left corner, as deluxe family suite, the ballroom, the Wolf’s Den room, Ten Paw bowling alley, the outdoor bar by the swimming pool, the deluxe Kids’ Cabin, and the heart of the family entertainment center.
To minimize check in time to avoid having antsy kids, Great Wolf “pack members” — the moniker given to resort staff — armed with devices greet and process guests if lines start to form to make sure check in time is minimized. There are also eight dining options ranging from traditional sit down and casual dining to fast food as well grab and go opens. The 55,000-square-foot family entertainment center features eight attractions including a ropes course, candy store, miniature golf, bowling, an arcade, and second most popular Great Wolf attraction for kids — MagiQuest. Great Wolf can teach Harry Potter a thing or two about magical fun thanks to MagiQuest. Young and old can use ‘magical wands’ to embark on a magical quest throughout the lodge. You determine the play time that can range from 30 minutes to three hours. You can take a break and come back hours later or the next day. You can even return with your wand months later to finish games or purchase new ones. The dining options and games area are open to the general public meaning you do not need to be resort guests to access them. Once Great Wolf Manteca is up and running for a number of months, one-day water park passes will be available based on occupancy and will feature demand pricing. Great Wolf caps water park access to guarantee a true resort experience and avoid having guests spend of time in lines. Besides story time kids that are hotel guests can access yoga classes, interactive science experiments, a high energy dance party, and a crafts area dubbed “Paw Projects” and more at no additional charge. For those seeking to spend more time in the water park or at the outdoor pool and want a bit of privacy, Great Wolf rents cabanas. They come with tanks and chairs, two lounge-style chairs, a 20-inch flat screen TV, mini-fridge with non-alcoholic beverages, plus plenty of towels as well as Great Wolf Lodge playing
cards for a mini retreat of sorts for families. Part of the safety and convenience of the resort stay are wristbands that have chips. Guests can have specific wristbands activated so they can be scanned to allow for the purchase of food, drink, and items in the gift shop that are charged to your room without having to worry about lugging around a wallet and purse and worrying about keeping them secure when accessing the water park and other attractions. The Manteca resort also has a 12,000-squarefoot conference center. That makes it the second largest conference center in terms of available
space in the same location in the Northern San Joaquin Valley after the Modesto Centre Plaza. It includes a main ballroom that can be split in thirds or used as one giant venue that has a capacity of 360 people in a classroom setting, 450 people in a banquet configuration, and 600 for theater-style seating. Additional smaller spaces means Great Wolf with the right mixture of booked events can accommodate over 900 people at the same time. For more information go to www.greatwolf.com.

Sustainable re-growth thru partnerships & unity
A
n unprecedented start to the new year? The year 2020 was to be the year of substantial job growth, new businesses and even a stronger community. The opening of a greatly missed waterpark; Great Wolf was to become the premier family entertainment waterpark destination for Manteca. While none of these situations have disappeared, they have been detoured by what has come to be known as COVID-19. I say detoured because this is “MANTECA” and Manteca is a strong supporter of their community and businesses. As we move forward into the year, we must navigate a new road map that has never been traveled before: social distancing, customer interaction from behind a barrier, the missing smile of a satisfied customer hidden by a mask and the most noticeable of all the physical contact of a handshake. One can only imagine the countless number of business deals that were solidified by a single handshake. The Manteca Chamber of Commerce is committed, as it has been since 1923, to
help navigate that new road map and serve our citizens and business community. The Manteca Chamber wants what is best for our businesses and consumers, sustainable re-growth for both existing and new. The Chamber will continue with our Weekly Coffees, our Lunch N’ Learns and our Legislative Update meetings. While for now they will be virtual, we hope in the near future we will be back face to face. Our successful future depends on our partnership with you, the business owner, the worker, and the consumer. We are here to serve you in whatever capacity necessary to help navigate that new road map. We promise to have an open dialogue and be receptive to suggestions and ideas. Together we will succeed and prosper. This is Manteca and “We Will” lead the way once again! To the Success of All!!

REACH 18 MILLION CONSUMERS
The Port of Stockton — the West Coast’s eastern most seaport — is 14 miles northwest of Manteca.
You can’t run a successful business today unless you can get your product to customers as fast as possible. At the same time you need to keep overhead costs low, have a reliable workforce, and be in a location that maximizes your potential. It is little wonder that Manteca and nearby communities have emerged as a major epicenter for distribution for firms serving the lucrative San Francisco Bay Area-San Jose and Sacramento markets. Manteca is at not only at the bulls-eye of 18 million consumers within 100 miles it has everything you need in terms of logistics to ship goods whether it is by freeway, by rail, by air and by water. That unique combination of being at the epicenter of what is the third largest 100-mile radius consumer market in the United States — behind Manhattan and Los Angeles County — is what has made Manteca so appealing to firms wanting to get the maximum efficiency out of distribution centers. The list includes DaimlerChrysler, Ford Motor Parts, Home Depot, JC Penney, Tesla, Lineage Refrigeration, Dryers Ice Cream, Wayfair and scores of smaller firms. They can reach consumers in job-rich Silicon Valley, San Francisco, and Sacramento that are all within 65 miles of
Amazon cargo jets land four to six times daily at Stockton Airport 10 miles north of Manteca.
Manteca as well as reach to Fresno and elsewhere from one central location It is also why investors — major insurance funds to developers — have also built over a two million square feet with significantly more the drawing board to position themselves to take full advantage of economic growth. There are ready-to-move in cube-style business parks with up to 100,000 square feet that allow firms to move the quick decisions they need in the changing competitive world of commerce. But more than anything else, the location of Manteca combined with unparalleled transit options makes it ideal in this day and age of on-time inventory aimed at keeping costs down while being able to respond quickly to consumer demand. Transit infrastructure available to businesses in Manteca include: • The Highway 99 corridor that is known as the “Main Street of California” in terms of the movement of everything from agriculture to consumer products. • Interstate 5 that runs from Mexico to Canada to connect with all major Pacific Coast markets. Interstate 5 runs through Lathrop and Highway 99 through Manteca and are connected by the seven-mile long Highway 120 Bypass. • Union Pacific Railroad has a major
rail-to-truck intermodal operation sandwiched between Manteca and Lathrop that has had a major increase in traffic to the point they are preparing to expand the operation. • Santa Fe Railroad also has a major rail-to-truck intermodal operation just 10 miles northeast of Manteca to provide concerns located in Manteca-Lathrop with access to both major rail carriers serving the Western Unified States. • Stockton Metro Airport is 10t miles north of Manteca. Amazon is among those taking advantage of the airport’s strategic location with four to six cargo flights a day. It also has an extended runway that accommodates larger jets. A major business park is moving into the development stage on the northeast corner of the airport. • Port of Stockton is 14 miles northwest of Manteca. It is the furthest eastern seaport on the West Cost and supports a wide variety of endeavors from shipping agricultural commodity, fertilizers through firms such as Simplot and importers such as Pier One Imports that maintain distribution centers at the port. • Interstate 205 — with a junction just three miles southwest of Manteca on Interstate 5 — is the major Bay Area connector.

Manteca’s murals are designed to give visitors, newcomers and longtime residents alike an insight into the community’s culture, history, and economy. The Manteca Mural Society has finished more than 30 murals I the downtown area. Among the murals are: Veterans Mural Wall The collection of five murals honoring the sacrifice and service of Americans in five wars — World War I, World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam War, and the Global War on Terror — is considered the latest mural effort west of the Mississippi River honoring those who served America Sierra’s Crown The first mural on your tour is part of the Veterans Plaza in front of the Legion Hall in the 200 block of West Yosemite Avenue. Ripon artist Dave Peterson’s original transparent watercolor of Half Dome is blended with images of Yosemite Valley and Merced River. The front of the Legion Hall in the 200 block of East Yosemite is a compilation of details such as a rainbow arching above the granite cap, as well as, trout in the Merced River. The mural is particularly dramatic just after sunset where ground lighting creates the feel of nightfall coming to Yosemite Valley. Crossroads 1918 The mural gracing the Main Street wall of Century Furniture located at Yosemite and Main is Manteca’s largest. It covers 4,000 square feet and was created by Dave Gordon. “Crossroads” depicts what Manteca’s business

It offers the same vantage point you would see standing across the street next to the Bank of America parking lot, but 90 years later. Cruising Arguably the most popular of all murals, people who didn’t even grow up in Manteca and experience the cruise down Yosemite Avenue in the 1950s and 1960s find themselves reminiscing about bygone days. It is in the 100 block of North Main Street on the Accent Carpets building and is the largest — and most realistic — of all the murals.

Seventy percent of California’s jacko’-lantern pumpkins are grown in the Manteca countryside. Rotary Mural From the “Pitching Pumpkins” mural you can head west through the parking lot. You will reach the “Rotary Mural” and a new mini-plaza.Take a minute to rest on one of the benches and enjoy the water fountain and garden. That way you can appreciate the detail of artist Don Gray’s salute to the worldwide service efforts of Rotary International. San Francisco The next mural is reached by heading south on Maple Avenue. Stay on the east side of the street when you reach Yosemite Avenue. Look upward to the west and you’ll see the “San Francisco” mural. Free-for-All This is in the 100 block of South Maple Avenue and shows a Manteca barn scene with children playing. Cow-munity Mural The society’s 96 by 12 foot salute to Manteca’s dairy industry is on a wall in the 200 block of West Yosemite Avenue facing the Athens Burgers parking lot. Bounty of the Valley The salute to the richness of Central Valley farmland can be found on the alley off the 100 block of Sycamore Avenue. Manteca Snow This whimsical mural on Manteca Avenue across from Library Park offers a vantage point out of a window looking into an orchard where children are frolicking in “Manteca snow” - gently falling almond blossoms. The Family City Located in the 200 block of North Main Street on the side of Crystal Down’s State farm Insurance Agency, the mural is a salute to the different cultures and people that make up Manteca. The City of Manteca’s official motto is “the family City.” Mossdale Crossing The mural depicts the actual final link of the Transcontinental Railroad being completed on Sept. 8, 1869 at nearby Mossdale Crossing on the San Joaquin River on the side of The Spin Cycle in the 100 block of East Yosemite Avenue posed for a group photo. Five Library Park murals There are four murals at Library Park in addition to a Kids Mural. The four murals are “Water Brings Abundance” focused on the region’s agriculture, “Pioneer Spirit” on the settling of the area known as Manteca, “Last at Bat” celebrating the community baseball field that once stood where Library Park is today, “Early Industry” saluting Spreckels Sugar as well as other endeavors, and “Beginnings” honoring the original habitants of the sandy plains of Manteca. EVENTS
• Manteca Crossroads Street Faire (First weekend in April) This Northern California tradition is into its third decade. The two-day event takes place in downtown Manteca and typically draws upwards of 40,000 people. There’s music, mirth, good food, endless vendors, and lots of people watching. For more information contact the Manteca Chamber of Commerce at (209) 823-6121. • Old-Fashioned Fourth of July: (Independence Day, July 4) It’s a true red, white, and blue holiday in Manteca starting with the 2,400 flags placed along major streets as part of the Manteca Chamber of Commerce’s “Flags Over Manteca” project. Then there’s a pancake breakfast followed by a parade through downtown Manteca ending with an old-fashioned fire cart being pulled by firefighters who hook it up to hydrants along the route to spray down the young and young at heart. After dusk there is a large aerial fireworks display. For more information contact the Manteca Chamber of Commerce at (209) 823-6121. • Manteca Pumpkin Fair: (First weekend in October) Manteca is the largest pumpkin growing region in the Western United States if not the nation. Fields around Manteca supply over 90 percent of California’s Halloween pumpkins plus tons that go to other nearby states. The Sunrise Kiwanis conducts a street fair featuring over 300 vendors with three stages of entertainment. For more information call the Manteca Sunrise Kiwanis at 800-872-6546. • Dell’Osso Farms Corn Maze: (The month of October) More than 140,000 people visit the Dell’Osso Corn Maze each year next door to Manteca in Lathrop off Interstate 5. It features a 40-acre corn maze either by the light of day or by the glimmer of stars and flashlights in the evening. There is also a haunted house, games, go-carts, pumpkins sales, hay rides and more. But the star attraction is the pumpkin blasters. It’s the only place on earth that you can find the answer personally to the question: How far can you lob a mini-pumpkin using a 6-foot barrel with sights? The answer is about 200 yards. Farmer Ron Dell’Osso has designed and had six “pumpkin blasters” welded from steel. For $5, you get a bucket

of ammo — 12 mini-pumpkins to be exact — that you can fire away at targets that include the standard open mouths on Halloween characters and hanging tires. For more information on the Dell’Osso Farms Corn Maze go to www.pumpkinmaze.com. • Twilight Christmas Parade (Second Saturday in December) We are planning our Holiday Parade on December 12th, this year. For more than 40 years, Manteca has conducted a twilight Christmas parade through downtown. We will be having the parade at a “New Location” this year. It will be held on Perimeter Drive out at the Promenade Shopping Center. There will be lots of area to watch the parade either from your vehicle or outside. Manteca has the largest Lighted Parade in
the area with more than 120 entries. We will have many activities for the kids, such as kiddy rides, a petting zoo, pony rides and pictures with Santa. There will also be free children’s arts & crafts activities. We have lots of craft and vendor booths signed up, plus many food trucks and more. Come out and do your early Christmas shopping while the kids are entertained.

If you love the great outdoors, then you’re love Manteca. It’s got everything you need within minutes — 1,000 miles of meandering Delta waterways for boating, waterskiing & fishing; rafting on the Stanislaus River, wind surfing at Woodward Reservoir, the last big stand riparian woodlands at Caswell State Park; idyllic river access, and Bass Pro Shops.
CASWELL STATE PARK: A bit of paradise — and a rare look into a winter’s day in the Northern San Joaquin Valley 163 years ago — awaits those venturing to Caswell Memorial State Park. The 258 acres is one of the few places left in the Central Valley where you can still wander among riparian woodlands as more than 98 percent of the woodlands that once graced riverbanks and floodplains are gone. The park along the banks of the Stanislaus River at the end of Austin Road south of Manteca and west of Ripon is jammed many summer weekends with folks seeking relief from the heat in the cool swimming areas off sandy beaches or beneath the rustling leaves of stately valley oaks that often soar to 60 feet and can have a diameter up to 17 feet. The spring with blooms bursting out as the chill of the valley disappears or the fall when a kaleidoscope of colors seem to explode everywhere attract a fair amount of visitors. But it is winter when Caswell offers its most unique charm framed in solitude.
THE GREAT OUTDOORS
Much of the park is in its naked glory while the ground is covered in a rich layer of leaves. Walks and day hikes are brisk, invigorating affairs. Pause on your trek and you can hear the soft sounds of the valley in slumber — bird flapping its wings or a creature creating crunching noises as it scurries through the blanket of leaves. Skies that seem deeper blue than in summer whenever the sun breaks through either clouds or fog provide a brilliant background for the seemingly endless skeletons of trees. It is here that numerous microclimates support wildlife that once dominated the valley. It is also where two shy and endangered species — the riparian woodland rabbits and the riparian wood-rat reside. The rarer of the two — the riparian woodland rabbit — can only be found here and along the banks of Stewart Tract on the nearby San Joaquin River. You will also find plant species at Caswell that are rarely found in the area due to more than 163 years of development. While it is easy to get lost in the enchanted woodlands, Caswell also offers a unique chance to see the Stanislaus River in winter up close in all its winter glory. Many fish along the Stanislaus as it flows past Caswell seeking bass, catfish, and crappie. Birdwatching is a popular pastime while casual hikes through the woodlands and along the river are a favorite as well. Caswell is open daily for day use from 8 a.m. to sunset. There is a

$10 entry fee. There are also campsites and restrooms. For more information call 599.3810. BASS PRO SHOPS is America’s most unique outdoors sporting goods store. Where else do you enter a store by passing through a 56-foot replica of the General Sherman — the world’s largest tree by volume — that’s in Sequoia National Park? You can spend hours just meandering through the 120,000-square-foot store marveling at 125 native fish species in a 24,000-gallon freshwater aquarium bellowing a 30-foot soaring replica of Yosemite’s El Capitan as well as trout swimming in a pond, checking out the replica, view numerous murals depicting the great Northern California outdoors and enjoy more than 3,500 area artifacts, antiques, pictures, mounts and memorabilia plus pictorial and tributes to John Muir and President Theodore Roosevelt. Bass Pro Shops is in the Promenade Shops at Orchard Valley lifestyle center at the Highway 120 and Union Road interchange. For more information go to www.basspro.com or call (209) 825-8400.
THE CALIFORNIA DELTA is unparalleled for water activities with 1,000 miles of meandering waterways. This is where over 70 percent of California’s water flows either to San Francisco Bay or south into the California Aqueduct. Bass Pro Shops in Manteca lures more than 2.5 million outdoor Manteca is near the Mossdale Boat enthusiasts every year. Launch where Interstate 5 crosses Page 20 Manteca Chamber of Commerce 2020-2021
the San Joaquin River and a host of smaller launch sites. The Delta with its nooks and crannies hiding water fowl and secret fishing places alike to its 19th century Delta towns and unique touches such as Sunday brunch at the Grand Mansion that was once the largest mansion in all of California makes it suitable for the fisherman, the explorer and the sightseer. The best source to enjoy all the eastern side of the Delta has to offer is to contact the California Delta Chambers & Visitors Bureau online at www.californiadelta.org or call (916) 777-4041. STANISLAUS RIVER PARKS stretch for some 20 miles from historic Knights Ferry with the longest covered wooden bridge to Manteca’s back yard. There is hiking, picnicking, camping, fishing, rafting, and more along the lazy river with its canopy of shade blocking out the hustle and bustle of everyday life. For information on the park system, go to www. spk.usace.army.mil/organizations. cespk-co/lakes/stansilaus or call (209) 881-3517, for information on rafting go ion line to Sunshine Rafting Adventures at www.raftadventure.com or call 1-800-829-7238 or contact River Journey by going on line to www.riverjourney.com or calling 1-800-292-2938. WOODWARD RESERVOIR is locating 16 miles northeast of Manteca. It is popular with campers, swimmers and fishermen but it really catches a lot of attention for wind surfers.
