Barcellos’ autobiographical novel chronicles Portuguese American life By R OSE A L BAN O RI SSO The Bu lletin
How long does it take to write a 300-page novel? For Anthony Barcellos, sitting down to write the book took just three weeks. But it actually took longer than Barcellos that. He had thought about it for quite some time before he finally sat down “one summer, in August 2009, during the summer break before school started,” said Barcellos in a telephone interview from his home in Davis, just outside of Sacramento. The actual writing completely overwhelmed his two friends who read the book contemporaneously as he was writing it. The book is “Land of Milk and Money,” an autobiographical novel generously flavored with his Portuguese American heritage. It is published by Tagus Press at the University of Massachusetts in Dartmouth, Mass. “My novel was a spontaneous effort to document Portuguese American life in the Central Valley and to pay tribute to my grandparents’ accomplishments,” said the 62-year-old Barcellos who grew up in his paternal grandfather’s dairy farm in the small town of Porterville in Central California’s Tulare County. A graduate of UC Davis’ School of Educational doctoral program in mathematics education, Barcellos will be one of about two-dozen authors who will be at the
second annual Great Valley Bookfest set for Saturday, Oct. 19, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Promenade Shops at Orchard Valley next to Bass Pro Shops. He will have copies of his books available and will be there to personally autograph them. His book is a work of fiction but the story is based on actual events. “Writing in the form of fiction gave me the freedom to hook things up and connect stuff,” to understand, for example, why he had uncles who hated each other, which are common experiences shared not just by his Portuguese American family but by other groups of people

together. Barcellos looked for an agent and “got turned down by a few” before someone got him in contact with Tagus Press. While Land of Milk and Money is Barcellos’ first fiction effort, he is no stranger to writing and being published. But in contrast, those first publications concentrated on science reporting, computer technology, and mathematics. One of his scientific reports was published in the Albuquerque Journal under fellowship sponsored by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. such as the Greeks and Filipinos as well. “In my case, Azorean Portuguese,” he said. The opening chapters in his book, as another example, which focus on long and drawn-out courtroom-scene battles revolving around the settling of the estate of the

Liliana Castañeda Rossmann Liliana Castañeda Rossmann is Professor of Communication at California State University, San Marcos. She earned an M.A. in International Peace Studies at the University of Notre Dame, and a Ph.D. in Communication from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Her research and teaching interests are in storytelling by Mexican migrants, Rossmann especially as it pertains to identity development, conflict, mediation, and dialogue. Robert Kroese Robert Kroese’s sense of irony was honed growing up in Grand Rapids, Mich. – home of the Amway Corporation and the Gerald R. Morris Garcia Morris Garcia was inspired to write the children’s book, “Henry the Brave Little Tractor,” after he saved Henry from becoming scrap iron and renewed him at home in the garage. Once this was done, there needed to be a story about Henry’s life including all his trials and tribulations and how he overcame adversity to become the strong and Garcia beloved little tractor he is today. Morris F. Garcia was born in 1939 in French Camp. The family operated a dairy at Airport Way (then Durham Ferry Road) and the 120 Highway Bypass. Morris attended Manteca elementary schools from 1945 through 1949 (fourth grade). The family then moved to Escalon, where Morris was raised on a dairy farm and learned to drive on a Ford tractor just like Henry the Brave Little Tractor. Morris is a business school graduate from San Jose State. He is a farmer, banker and farm real estate broker. He and his wife Sharon have been married for 52 years. Together, they have three children and four granddaughters.
Danielle Edgren Danielle Edgren: I grew up in Seattle, where I learned at a young age that I loved to cook. I attended several years of Culinary Arts courses, which taught me the invaluable knowledge of the dynamics of food. I enjoyed competing in local events, and catering banquets. I soon developed the art of crafting new ideas Edgren that took me down the path to my own recipe development. Clive Riddle Clive Riddle is a life-long Californian, married and father of three, living in Modesto. At age 26, Riddle became CEO of a regional health plan. After a decade, he went on to found MCOL (www.mcol.com), a leading national health care business information company. Riddle has authored a variety of health care Riddle reference books and business articles in national publications. He is a noted speaker at national events regarding key health care business issues. Slack is an artist, illustrator, and an educator as well as a member of three prominent organizations: the National League of American Pen Women, Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, and the American Association of University Women. Maya Torngren Maya Torngren, author of Maya: the Story of a German War Bride shares the life story of a German girl growing up in Germany during Hitler’s regime. Maya spent the night of her 15th birthday huddled in the basement with her family as her hometown of Augsburg suffered its largest air raid of the war. Life was very interesting for the teenager after the Torngren war ended and the American troops entered the city, bringing with them the Big Band Sound. Five years after the war, she met and married an American soldier. Moving to America was just the beginning of many different experiences that awaited her. The couple and their four children left the U.S. to embark on an 11-month, once-in-alifetime trip to Africa, the Canary Islands, and Europe. Four years after their return to the U.S., they moved to California, where they remain to this day. Sadly, a few years later, tragedy struck the family. The book ends 60 years later on Maya’s 75th birthday.
Robert O’Hanneson Robert O’Hanneson spent over 20 years selling amusement rides to carnivals and amusement parks worldwide. Now, he writes fulltime in California’s Central Valley. His novel, Possum Belly Queen, is Dark Oak Mystery Contest’s 2010. He wrote Bloody Soil, which was partially read on Fresno’s NPR station. His article “Inside the Silos of Doomsday” was O’Hanneson part of Military History Magazine’s issue on the Cuban Missile Crisis. His work also appeared in Fresno Magazine. As board vice president of the Yosemite Writers Conference, he worked on planning of conferences, speaker acquisitions and generated scholarship funds for high school and college students.
Britt Nunes Britt Nunes never expected to be a writer. Coming from a past where she always struggled academically, to the point where she was held back in grammar school, the idea of completing a novel was utterly intangible. But falling in love with reading was what ultimately helped her excel. She now considers herself a dork with an overactive imagination. Nunes Being that she is addicted to rich words, suspenseful stories, a touch of romance, and massive amounts of coffee, becoming a writer not just became possible, but enviable. Meet the Authors itself, Jose’s accomplishment is even more amazing when you realize the journey he took to get there. Born into a migrant farm working family from Mexico, José spent much of his childhood on what Hernández he calls the “California Circuit,” travelling with his family from Mexico to California’s southern San Joaquin Valley each March, then working in the fields northward to the Stockton area. In late November, they would return to Mexico where they celebrated Christmas and waited for March to start the cycle all over again. Through many hardships, Jose’s parents stayed strong and focused on their children’s education which allowed José to dream of one day reaching the stars. Determined to fulfill his dream, José obtained degrees in Electrical Engineering. After a successful career as an engineer and scientists at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, where he worked on the development of an X-ray laser, helped developed the first full-field digital mammography system for the early detection of breast cancer and worked in the nuclear non-proliferation arena, José was selected as part of the 19th class of U.S. Astronauts in 2004. On Aug. 28, 2009 José, assigned to the STS-128 Space Shuttle Discovery mission as the flight engineer, realized his dream of reaching for the stars blasting off into space on a 14 day mission to the International Space Station. Jose’s inspiring journey of perseverance and hard work is a true fulfillment of the American dream. His book, REACHING FOR THE STARS is the inspiring story of how he realized that dream, becoming the first Mexican-American astronaut.
Hal Janssen Hal Janssen is a nationally known writer, artist, lecturer, and video personality. Anthony Barcellos Anthony Barcellos was born in California, but his first language and original culture came from Terceira, the birthplace of all four of his grandparents. He soon learned English and eventually became a math teacher and writer. Amy Elizabeth Smith Amy Elizabeth Smith is originally from western Pennsylvania. She teaches professional writing, creative writing, and literature at the University of the Pacific in Stockton. In June 2012, she published a nonfiction travel memoir entitled All Roads Lead to Austen: A Year’s Journey with Jane. The Smith book describes a year spent traveling and hosting Jane Austen reading groups in Guatemala, Mexico, Ecuador, Chile, Paraguay, and Argentina.

Yet to be illustrated is a children’s book, Grandma Flies A Hot Air Balloon. Claudia is currently completing a nonfiction book about a nuclear site in Hanford, Washington, and its tragic effects on the nearby population.
Kristin Miller Kristin Miller has had a passion for language and literature her whole life. Born and raised in northern California, she often made up stories about faraway places and edgeof-your-seat adventures.

Paula Treick DeBoard Paula Treick DeBoard is a reader, writer and all-around slave to the field of public education. She earned a B.A. in English from Dordt College in 1998 and thought, “I’ll teach high school English during the week and write fiction on the DeBoard weekends” – a delusion which persisted for a decade, during which time she wrote exactly one short story. In 2010, she graduated from the University of Southern Maine with an MFA degree in Creative Writing (Fiction) and a rediscovered passion for staring at a laptop screen for long hours. Paula wrote her first novels as a passenger in the backseat of a 1977 Chevrolet Caprice Classic station wagon, where her parents let her jostle around for thousands of miles unprotected by a seatbelt. David Troxel David Troxel, M.P.H., served for over a decade in leadership roles for the Alzheimer’s Association. He works as a consultant on dementia care for the long-term care industry, speaks on Alzheimer’s care at regional and national events, and is known worldwide for his writing and teaching. ‘Cupcake Lady’ among Bookfest’s gourmet food truck offerings B y J A SO N C AMP BEL L The Bulletin
It’s hard not to see Troyce Fraga coming. For one, she’s typically behind the wheel of a pink Mother’s Cookies truck that’s been specially modified for her mobile business that brings custom-baked cupcakes to the masses. Yes, “The Cupcake Lady” rolls around in a ride that’s as carefully detailed as the treats that she prepares in the commercial kitchen space that she and her husband Steve work out of in Turlock. And whether it’s the Manteca Farmer’s Market or the upcoming Great Valley Bookfest, there aren’t very many places that the operation won’t go. She’s hit three festivals and a fundraiser in the last month. When you turn out artisanquality tasty treats like those that she brings, people tend to welcome you with open arms. “The idea for the business was something that my wife came up with four or five years ago as a passionate baker, and she put the time into looking at brickand-mortar companies that specialize in cupcakes to see what was needed,” Steve Fraga said. “When I retired we launched the business together and it was absolutely the right move. It’s fun and exciting and people appreciate the delicious, fresh-baked cupcakes that we deliver to them. “There were some initial challenges, but we’ve got those worked out after 20 months and things only continue to get better.” “The Cupcake Lady” is among the gourmet food

trucks that are part of this year’s Great Valley Bookfest. It’s not uncommon for the couple to get an order today for upwards of 2,000 cup-
cakes for a single event – they just filled one for that amount for UC Merced last month – and handling such large volume just serves a constant reminder of how
far they’ve come in a short amount of time. The business now has a contract with a commercial kitchen cooperative in Turlock that gives them the capability to bake 720 cupcakes every 30 minutes. The facility is their third – they initially outgrew the first two that they contracted with in Modesto. And driving around with hundreds of cupcakes presented its own unique set of challenges for the couple. Fraga said that in order to maximize the use of the Plexiglas window that’s built into the truck he had to have special plastic shelving built to display the trays. It helps, however, when the pitch isn’t steep enough to send all of the cupcakes crashing to the ground when the big pink truck rounds a corner. “There was a learning curve early on, and that first week it probably a $1,500 lesson,” Fraga said. “We can sit back and laugh about it now, but it wasn’t all that funny at the time, especially when that’s the money that we had to put into it at the time. “Now we realize when we go somewhere that you’re going to lose a few cupcakes – it’s inevitable.
