Modesto Street Rod Association Gears Up For Graffiti BY VIRGINIA STILL

A longtime summertime tradition in the Central Valley, get ready to enjoy Graffiti Summer, with events scheduled throughout the month of June. The summer months around the 209 can be counted on for river rafting, pool parties, BBQ’s and a variety of outdoor events, including the Modesto classic cars tradition. With the car shows, cruising, and entertainment there will be car clubs revving up their engines and shining up their cars. One group in particular has been around since 1975 called the Modesto Area Street Rod Association (MASRA) that will be rolling out in style in their classic cars this summer. Charter Member Ray Lee is the club’s car show chairman and has been a member along with his wife Marsha since 1975. He served as club president in 1993, 2014, 2015, and 2016. The couple has a 1968 Chevrolet Camaro

that they drive and display in shows. MASRA hosts a Graffiti Classic car show during the first Sunday in June each year as the kickoff event for Graffiti Summer in Modesto. This year the Graffiti Classic will be held on June 2. “Our show has become the largest single day car show in Modesto,” explained Lee. “We draw over 500 of the finest automobiles and the friendliest people to the unique setting of the McHenry Village Shopping Center.” Happy to host a local show, Lee said the club members also are part of the larger ‘family’ of classic car enthusiasts. “Over the years we have enjoyed many lifelong friendships and continue to make new friends at various classic car events,” expressed Lee. “In 1975 our club started with a group of guys and gals just cruising our hot rods and hanging out. Our bond was a common interest in

classic cars. We didn’t have a lot of money in those days; we even camped out at rod runs because motels were out of the budget. Reminiscing about all the club outings, picnics, car shows, weddings, etc. are all a very special part of being a Modesto Area Street Rod Association club member. Our daughter Megan has been a part of almost all of our club events. Megan even has her own muscle car, a 1968 Chevy II Nova that we fully restored when she was in high school.” According to Lee, the members originally drove

pre-1949 street rods and attended car shows up and down the Central Valley and at times out of the state. The organization is family oriented and many of their children have grown up in the club, inheriting the passion and love for the classics. “We are active in our community, promoting car events which help us fundraise for many nonprofit organizations and families in need,” said Lee. “In 2012 we amended our bylaws and opened our club membership to all those who own pre-1973 classic cars. This change

has complemented our club as there are so many 50’s, 60’s and 70’s classics being restored. Our goal and objective is to promote and preserve interest in the classic car hobby for the next generation.” Currently there are 28 “family” members in the club and they do accept new members. The membership is open to classic car owners that have a 1972 or older. They meet at Perko’s on Sylvan and Oakdale Roads two Tuesdays a month. Call 209-521-6528 for more information. “The MASRA fully supports the Modesto car culture and the Graffiti Summer events,” stated Lee. “We are proud to be a part of the Graffiti Summer steering committee and meet once a month with Jennifer Mullen of Visit Modesto. We also hold current memberships in the Association of California Car Clubs, National Street Rod Association and Good Guys Rod and Custom Association.”

Some of the current members have been with the club for many years and have classic cars that they have restored themselves. Bob Huntley has been a member for eight years and has a 1951 Ford Business Coupe. He has served twice as the organization’s president and enjoys the camaraderie of the members which was a big factor in joining the club. The business coupe body style is what attracted Huntley to his ‘51 Ford. “The gathering of all the people that have the same interest as I have with older cars and continuing the tradition of hot rodding as we did back in the 50’s,” Huntley expressed was his favorite part of the Graffiti celebration. Vern and Josie Silva joined the club in 1977 and they have a 1932 Ford Roadster. A highlight for the Silva’s about the club is sharing their love for street rods with their friends. street rods Page 11

“The 1932 Ford is the classic street rod of the 1950s,” added Silva. Ed and Pam Andrade have been members for about five years and have a 1951 Chevy Business Coupe. They joined the club to be around good people that enjoy cars. They also stay busy participating in many events during Graffiti summer and said they like meeting new

people that have interests in cars. Roger Frazer has a 1926 Ford Coupe and has been a member for about six years. He has the ‘26 Ford because he liked the look of it. Being part of the MASRA has allowed him to socialize with people with similar interests. Graffiti summer to Frazer is a time to share with the public the “oldies but goodies.” Allen and Barbi Huntley have been members for five years and have a 1932 Ford. With the family feel

of the club and the fact that his father asked him to join with him is why Huntley is part of MASRA. A favorite part of graffiti summer for the couple is all the excitement that everybody shows about the heritage of the Modesto car scene. Jerry and Toni Sauls have a 1956 station wagon and have been part of the club for 24 years. They also have a 1932 Roadster, because, as Toni said “the ‘32 is what classic cars” are all about. “Our graffiti classic car

show is the best show all around,” said Sauls. Larry and Saundra Wing were members many years ago when the club first started and took a few years off and then rejoined in 2013. “The highlight of being in the club is making friends with people who share our love for street rods,” Wing said. “The first coupe I built was at age 14. I have built all five 1932 Fords in my garage.” Ed and Bettie Bracco have been members since

2006 and have a 1937 Chevy Cabriolet while Steve Cunha has a 1940 Ford Deluxe Coupe and has been a member since 2008. “I saw a few ’40 Fords and always wanted one,” said Cunha. “Now I have one.” Tom and Phyllis Smernes have been members for over 40 years. One of the original members of the club that started in the ‘70s, Tom dropped out for several years and then rejoined the club back in

1986. They have a 1937 Ford Coupe which Tom said is his favorite car that he restored himself. “One of the best things of belonging to a club is the friendships you make and continue to have through the years,” added Phyllis. “Our favorite part of the Graffiti celebration in Modesto is the McHenry Village classic car show that our club puts on and the nightly events happening in our town.” Rex and Karina Kelland street rods Page 12

Valli Comes To The Valley Graffiti season has arrived and for many people, it brings back that nostalgic feeling. It’s a

time of year when you put on your leather jacket or poodle skirt, hop in your roadster and put a

nickel in the juke box at the malt shop. The music of the ‘50s and ‘60s lives in our hearts forever and

one of the most iconic figures was Frankie Valli. Valli, who grew up in Newark, New Jersey, cranked out several memorable tunes with the group The Four Seasons including chart toppers: Sherry, Walk Like A Man, Big Girls Don’t Cry, Rag Doll, Can’t Take My Eyes Off You and Grease. The group formed in 1956. On Friday night, June 14 Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons will be

performing at The Fruit Yard Amphitheater, 7948 Yosemite Blvd., Modesto. Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons had 40 singles in the top 40, 19 reached the top 10 and eight landed at number one. You can catch this once in a lifetime performance under the stars with a scheduled start time of 8 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at www.ticketmaster.com. Their music has influenced several Rock and

Roll Hall of Famers including Barry Gibb and Billy Joel. Decades after their songs first hit the airwaves, they still find a way into the rotation in today’s digital age and remain popular worldwide. Their songs have also been featured in movies, television shows and commercials. This concert is sure to be a memorable, romantic blast from the past, suitable for the entire family.

Modesto Graffiti-Con Adds New Feature To Graffiti Month BY DENNIS D. CRUZ

When you hear “Graffiti” you think of the classic cars, music and costumes. There is only one event where all of these happen under one roof: Modesto’s GraffitiCon Comic and Car Show. Over 100 vendors and artists will be featured at the event, on Sunday, June 23 at Modesto Centre Plaza in Downtown Modesto. The cost is just $5 to experience the event for all ages. Doors open at 10 a.m. and close at 5 p.m. The event is put on by

Middagh Goodwin and this is the second annual event. Proceeds to go to Modesto Area Music Association, a local non-profit organization (501c3). Goodwin has 30-plus years of experience in events but this is his second year with Graffiti-Con. “Last year it was kind of thrown together in three months, a lot of work went into it but not a lot of time. This year we had time to prepare and get it together,” said Goodwin.

He said he wanted to add a ‘con’ to Graffiti month for several reasons. “With Modesto being the birthplace of George Lucas, I wanted to incorporate the fantasy aspect to graffiti. I think having classic cars, super heroes and retro toys all together in one setting is very important.” Special guests are scheduled to include: Mark Bode, Landrey Q. Walker, Robert Love, Michael Aushenker, Dom Davi, Ryan Oksenberg, Kep Ghoulie, Adam

Haris, Omar Salinas, Haro George and Steve Gonzales. “These are very talented artists and we are fortunate to have them on board. They all bring something to the table and each has their own unique style. Fans will enjoy their work.” Toy vendors and comics include: Comics Plus, Comics & Collectibles, Crafty Harpies, Davis Entertainment, House of Cards, Moonkee Art, PAL Collectibles, Remember When? Toys & Collectibles and

more. “To me the toys and collectibles are a key to any con. It brings up childhood memories and provides the new generation with new memories as well,” Goodwin explained. Added fun includes a classic car show, cosplay contest, panels and the Greek fashion show. The car show will feature cars from pre-1977. There will be prizes given away for first, second and third place cars.

“To me, the vehicles used in comics, television shows and movies were just as important as the characters that used them. The Batmobile, Death Star, the Enterprise and the DeLorean are all iconic so that’s where my appreciation to classic cars came from.” The Car show runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cosplay contest will be held at 4 p.m. and is hosted by The NorCal Cosies. This contest is open for everyone in costumes.

American Graffiti Being Screened At State The iconic State Theatre in Modesto joins the fun of Graffiti Summer by serving up the classic film highlighting the era of hot rods. On Saturday, June 1 at 2 p.m., come see the film

that started it all, American Graffiti, by director George Lucas. The film is rated PG and runs 110 minutes. Ready for root beer floats and dancing in the aisles of The State to one of the best film soundtracks in

history? So are we! Join us for our annual screening of American Graffiti, a crowd-pleaser starring Ron Howard, Harrison Ford, Richard Dreyfuss, Cindy Williams, Candy Clark and many more. Every year we

also roll back admission to only $5 so, bring 10 of your closest personal friends and have a blast! The State’s frothy and now-famous root beer floats will also be available so get here early, while

there’s plenty of A&W root beer and French vanilla ice cream left. At only $4 each, they go fast! Don your best duds from the late ‘50s and early ‘60s, or dress as your favorite character from American Graffiti, George

Lucas’ consummate coming-of-age film, and join in the fun. Also starring Bo Hopkins, Charles Martin Smith, Mackenzie Phillips, Manuel Padilla Jr., Paul Le Mat and Wolfman Jack.

Take A Stroll Through ‘American Graffiti’ History BY SABRA STAFFORD

The classic George Lucas film “American Graffiti” cemented Modesto’s place in the collective nostalgia of sock hops, cruising, and classic cars. Every June people come together to celebrate the bygone days and car culture, but the memory of that time can be revisited any time with a stroll on the Modesto Historic Graffiti Cruise Route Wall of Fame. The Walk of Fame recognizes the cruisers, hot rod racers, teeny boppers, and unforgettable personalities that left an indelible mark on Modesto and Lucas, and inspired “American Graffiti.”

The Walk of Fame is a self-guided tour of sidewalk markers celebrating the Legends of the Cruise. It traverses the path cars used to drag on 10th and 11th streets. The markers explore topics from Lucas’ biography to car clubs of the 1950s and 1960s to some of the hometown heroes. The Walk has a total of 25 stops. Founding Legends of the Cruise from 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018 are: George Lucas, Leroy Applequist, Bart Bartoni, Chuck Billington, Candy Clark, Pete Hischier, Bo Hopkins, Paul Le Mat, Terry McGrath, Gene Winfield, Century Toppers Car

Club, Bennie Furtado, Gerry Ramirez, Wendell Reed, Dennis Wilson, Charlie Reynolds, Don Monaco, Judy Felix Walk, Glen Wild, Dwight Trammel, Frank Burnett, The Faros, John Sanders, “Big Jon” Enberg, Worth Weldon, Bobby & Bell Gaines, the Modesto Throttlers, Ecurie Awol Racing Club, Don Wood, Allen Grant, Paul Corgiat, Roy Farriester, and Jack McCoy. The next inductees into the Walk of Fame will be announced and installed at 6:30 p.m. June 5 at the 10th Street Plaza in downtown Modesto. For more information on the Walk of Fame visit w w w.modestocr uiseroute.com.

Restore And More At Kiwi’s Classics BY VIRGINIA STILL

With heart and passion for older cars, Rex ‘Kiwi’ Kelland has been restoring and working with cars for several years. He opened Kiwi’s Classics about 12 years ago in Modesto where American Graffiti was born. His love for the classics started way before that

and he has over 40 years of experience working on classic cars in one way or another. The business is called Kiwi’s Classics – Kiwi for the native bird of New Zealand which is where Kelland is from and Classics – for his love of the classic automobile. He has been

interested in old cars since he was about 12 years old and would drag home old parts that had been stripped apart and learned his craft by working on them. Arriving in the states when he was 28, Kelland only had plans to be here for a year while his wife at the time was recruited for Doctors Medical Center. One year turned into two and then many more as they planted roots, had kids and decided to stay. Although they made the states their permanent residence, they still have one foot in Kelland’s homeland. “This (Modesto) was the heart of the movie American Graffiti,” explained Kelland. “My guys from New Zealand tell me ‘oh man, you are

ing and started working on old cars all the time non-stop,” said Kelland. “I do small stuff now like the ‘64 Corvette here that has been in storage since 2011. I just got one fully running, polished up, registered and rolling down the street. I did all the mechanicals on it. I don’t work for very

many people and I am particular on the people I do work for.” With good clientele and massive amount of connections in the car business, the well of knowledge has allowed him to find just about anything. He has several contacts overseas and recently has shipped a handful of cars to Japan. From these experiences he has gained the knowledge of the costs that come with shipping vehicles and the restrictions different countries have. “It is good to have people in different countries because rules change all the time and the economy changes,” stated Kelland. “Networking is really helpful.” For about 25 years Kelland has been a member of Mid Valley Chevy Club and he has been involved for about eight years with Modesto Area Street Rod Association. He does inspections on cars for people that are unable to see the car for themselves and give them an honest opinion to make sure the car is of the quality that may be portrayed online. Kelland explained that people from all over

know about American Graffiti in Modesto. He sends merchandise to these connections and they are thrilled to have it.

“I still don’t think that they use the graffiti thing to the optimum in this town,” expressed Kelland. “This is the only town that can have that

American Graffiti thing; it originated here. My guys in New Zealand are always like, you are living the dream, and I am and I know it.”

Music Helps Bring Back The Memories There won’t be a shortage of music to enjoy around the region as Graffiti Summer kicks into gear. Whether it’s the Gallo Center for the Arts, The State Theatre or a local park, the tunes are sure to transport you back in time for an evening of nostalgia. Here are some of the main attractions being planned for Modesto’s annual ‘all things graffiti’ celebration. Gallo Center for the Arts, 1000 I Street The Platters take the stage on Saturday, June 1. Though the performers’ names have changed through the years, the music never has. The Platters charted 40 hit records including “Only You,” “The Great Pre-

tender,” “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes,” and “Twilight Time.” The show starts at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, June 8 enjoy the sounds of Lee Rocker and be transported back in time. Bass player Hall of Famer Lee Rocker and the Stray Cats sold more than 10 million records and were music video pioneers on MTV. The Stray Cat’s mega hits “Stray Cat Strut,” “Sexy and Seventeen” and “Rock this Town” have become a part of the fabric of rock and roll. Sit back and marvel as Rocker and his band deliver the hits, with the show starting at 8 p.m. For more information, call 209-338-2100 or visit www.galloarts.org.

Graceada Park, 401 Needham Avenue Mark the calendar for Thursday, June 6 and come join the fun as the MoBand Concert in the Park presents: “Graffiti Love”. This is a beloved summer time in the park concert series. Spread out your blankets, bring a picnic and enjoy the sounds of MoBand. Admission is free and the concert begins at 8 p.m.; plan on a great night of tunes. Visit www.moband.org. for more information. The State Theatre, 1307 J Street Tommy Castro & the Painkillers crank it up on Saturday, June 15 and will keep the music and memories flowing.

Live on stage, the group brings an unmatched passion to Castro’s blueeyed California soul and hard-rocking, good-time songs. Killin’ It-Live will

thrill audiences with its live power and raw passion. Adding to the fun, the opening act for the night is blues guitarist Ron Thompson. Doors

open at 7 p.m., showtime is 8 p.m. and ticket prices are $25, $30 and $35. For tickets or more information, call 209-5274697 or visit thestate.org.

Do’s And Don’ts Of Restoring Classic Cars Auto enthusiasts devote substantial time and effort to purchasing, restoring and displaying classic cars. While the hobby of restoring classic cars is not necessarily for everyone, its popularity suggests it’s definitely an activity that’s here to stay. Those ready to dip their toes in the classic car waters should understand a few key factors that can affect how much they enjoy this potentially rewarding hobby. Some collectors face challenges when attempting to restore classic vehicles because the cars do not meet today’s stringent clean air initiatives that govern automobiles. With the increasing number

of new, clean cars on the road, vehicles that fail to meet modern emissions standards may pose a costly problem to classic car collectors. As governments increasingly emphasize the importance of clean fuel options, classic car owners may find it challenging to find more traditional fuels or face the added expense of adapting their vehicles to run on alternative fuels. Workers in the automotive trade are trained to manufacture and repair new vehicles. As a result, classic car owners without much mechanical ability of their own may find it difficult to find mechanics with the skills necessary to repair and restore classic

cars. Historic requirements also need to be heeded. Each state has its own requirements governing classic cars. To qualify for historic vehicle registration, vehicles may need to be 25 years or older, owned solely as a collector’s item and used exclusively for exhibition and educational purposes. When driven for personal use, such vehicles may not be allowed to exceed 1,000 miles per year. Classic cars continue to attract hobbyists from all over the globe. Restoring classic cars can be a rewarding pastime, but one that involves dedication and an investment of both time and money.
