Manteca Foods at the corner of Main and Alameda Streets, has been working steadily at the family’s grocery business trying to take care of customers that became even more reliant on businesses like the one his family operates when other retail businesses shuttered for the pandemic. While his day-to-day duties didn’t change all of that much when became an “essential” worker, what he was responsible for tracking down changed tremendously.

“I like doing this job because I get to help people find what they’re looking for and what they need,” said Saeed, a recent graduate of Cesar Chavez High School in Stockton. “That meant going to find things like hand sanitizer and masks and toilet paper so that we could provide those things to our customers. “We had to go all over the place – from Fresno to Oakland – to try and get things from our distributors so that we could provide them for our customers.” While the store does not yet carry a full-service meat department, discount produce, sundries, and dry goods have been a big part of their business – augmented by the rush to buy things related to the pandemic. That’s not to say that it’s been an easy road. Because of the massive demand on things like hand sanitizer and masks, purchasing enough to meet demand has meant paying a higher price from distributors, which in turn means charging more for

Grocery stores have seen unprecedented floods of people coming in to buy essential items to tide them over during mandatory stay-at-home orders or true quarantine. They also deal with attempted hoarders who try to buy more than their fair share of items in high demand. Many grocery retailers have decided to close earlier to help keep shelves stocked for the next day’s influx of purchasers. Checkers, stockers, custodians and managerial staff have to face a nervous clientele each and every day and still manage to do so with a positive attitude. Grocery workers’ dedication to keeping their shelves stocked and customers safe makes them heroes of the coronavirus pandemic.

Special care is being utilized by many of these services to keep goods contaminant-free. They’re also playing a key role in keeping small businesses afloat, including many restaurants that are only offering delivery and takeout services. Many people who can eat at home are ordering in to help keep their favorite restaurants in business during this extremely unusual time when dining rooms are closed and the option to eat out is impossible.

Many of us have that favorite restaurant where the ambiance is perfect, the wait staff is wonderful, and we make some of our happiest memories. Delivery people allow consumers to help out in the only way they can to keep those businesses operational during this difficult time.

TRUCK DRIVERS

Toilet paper, medical supplies, groceries and pet supplies are just a few of the items that are brought to Americans by truck drivers. There are so many things long-haul and local drivers

the products to recuperate the investment – something that Saeed says not every customer understands. But while there was an immediate shortage of things like eggs in most chain grocery stores as people bought in bulk to try and stock up and limit their exposure to the outside world, Manteca Foods has managed to keep those – and many other daily essentials – in stock for customers. And for some of their customers, the store is the only place to get what they need. In addition to most mainline American produce, the store stocks unique international items that are specific to Indian and Middle Eastern cuisine – carrying items that most regular grocery stores don’t. “We want to be able to provide what people need when they come in here,” Saeed said. “And part of that is providing things that people can’t find in every store – that’s something that we try to do. “That’s what I enjoy about doing this – SEE GROCERY, PAGE 8
