Leadership Team Promotes School Unity Sequoia Elementary School’s junior high Leadership team is working hard to promote a sense of togetherness during a time of distance from one another. The Leadership team, with support from advisor Mrs. Jennifer Adolfson, has been busy organizing virtual rallies and hosting themed spirit days while on campus for in-person instruction. The group’s goal for the 2020-2021 school year is to bring the school community “together” during an era of physical distancing. “We really wanted to give our junior high kids something fun to do, something to be silly with and something to make school life a bit more ‘normal’,” expressed Mrs. Adolfson. In a typical year, Leadership is offered as an elective at Sequoia with staff seeking out prospective students and hosting elections. However, this school year, Mrs. Adolfson called a meeting with fellow staff to brainstorm how they could make this unprecedented time more enjoyable for their Tiger family. It was decided, with the help of the incumbent Leadership members, that

a virtual rally would help kick-off the school year and pique the interest of additional students who may want to join the group. “Our first virtual rally was a hit!,” stated Mrs. Adolfson. “I was so proud of how well the kids organized and ran the event. We received a lot of positive feedback from both students and staff.” Currently, Sequoia’s Leadership group has 8 active members. To ensure the safety of all participants, Leadership meetings are being held virtually, in addition to an ongoing group chat in Microsoft TEAMS where members can touch base and discuss ideas. The group meets 1-3 times a week depending on what is on their agenda. “Students have really stepped up with the planning and running of our meetings,” said

Mrs. Adolfson. “I am so proud of how well they work together!” During an ordinary school year, Sequoia’s Leadership team organizes fundraisers, runs a snack bar for sporting events, and helps plan dances, fieldtrips, spirit days and rallies. The school held its second virtual rally of the school year on Thursday, December 17th before students recess for the remainder of the calendar year. Students tuned in to play games and enjoy their send off to Winter Break. Mrs. Adolfson summarized the event by expressing, “I absolutely love working with the Leadership group. They step up so much and their positivity is infectious!”
