Spesso bistrattato, lo stile “classico” viene visto come antitesi del più prestigioso design moderno, come se le due cose appartenessero a mondi differenti : in realtà molti designer non hanno rinunciato ad attuare un restyling delle linee classiche, come ad esempio l’a rredamento in stile barocco moderno.

Often maligned, the classical style is seen as the antithesis of the more prestigious modern design, as if the two were from two different worlds. As a matter of fact, many designers have not refrained from re-styling classical lines, as seen, for example, with modern baroque Furniture.

“Donna Mantellassi” si distingue per una personale re-interpretazione del classico non solo attraverso poltrone e divani in legno massello riccamente decorato, ma per un’idea precisa, colta, passionale ed elegante di casa, con le proprie consolle con le caratteristiche rifiniture, le imponenti testiere con profili in legno intarsiato e imbottitura rivestita di tessuti preziosi, rifiniti in foglia Oro o Argento; con i suoi soggiorni, ambienti in cui si alternano linee classiche e materiali moderni : dal cristallo al marmo. Sembra giunto il momento per ripensare l’eclettismo in termini non compromessi dall’esigenza, pur sicuramente apprezzabile, di interrompere un periodo ormai alle spalle e di iniziarne uno nuovo.

It is time to rethink eclecticism in terms not undermined by the need, although certainly important, to close one chapter and to start a new one.

Diderot dedica all’eclettismo un’a mpia voce dell’Encyclopédie, definendolo come una filosofia libera che trae profitto dalla critica scettica. Accanto ad un eclettismo puramente filologico e assimilabile ad un’idea negativa, propria della cultura moderna, esiste un eclettismo creativo, che ha prodotto risultati affascinanti ed esprime perfettamente lo Zeitgeist (lo spirito dell’e poca) a livello mondiale. Si può dire che è stato proprio il mondo moderno ad aver rinunciato ad esprimere lo spirito di un’e poca, a causa della predominante volontà di cambiare tutto. Quando si vuole cambiare una società non si esprimono i suoi valori, ma vengono espressi i valori di un piccolo gruppo di intellettuali che assume, o pretende di assumere, un ruolo profetico nella società. L’eclettismo è stato in fondo un modo di interpretare ciò che di diverso avveniva nel mondo culturale del secolo, assecondando i gusti, le manie e i desideri, a volte anche inconfessati, di una società che si era liberata da molti confini : tra cui quello nazionalistico. Oggi riviviamo attraverso la globalizzazione le stesse atmosfere ottocentesche : l’e poca dei viaggi, dell’a ssiduo contatto con civiltà diverse. Questa condizione particolarissima dell’uomo Ottocentesco è stata espressa

Diderot dedicated a large entry to eclecticism in his Encyclopédie, defining it as a free philosophy that benefits from skeptical criticism. Alongside a purely philological eclecticism that is analogous to a negative idea, typical of modern culture, there exists a creative eclecticism that has produced fascinating results and is a perfect expression of a global zeitgeist (spirit of an age). It can be said that it was the modern world that gave up expressing the spirit of an era because of a prevailing desire to change everything. When we want to change a society, its values are not expressed, but the values expressed are those of a small group of intellectuals who assume or claim to assume a prophetic role in society. Eclecticism was basically a way to interpret what else was happening in that century’s culture, satisfying the tastes, obsessions, and desires – at times even unacknowledged – of a society freed from many confines, including nationalistic. Today, we are reliving the same 19th century ambiance by means of globalization : an era of travel and regular contact with different civilizations. This condition, so characteristic of the 19thcentury, was expressed quite well by eclecticism, a phenomenon completely different from the avant-garde. In a sense, the artist distanced himself from the

L’eclettismo così si può considerare un modo di conciliazione tra la cultura artistica e la società. L’eclettismo ha origini antichissime, nella società greca, ad esempio, questa pratica era una scelta fondamentale, legata proprio alla necessità di un rapporto con altre società e si raffinò col tempo come un modo per mettere sullo stesso piano diversi gusti e differenti connotati stilistici e lasciare così il senso della libertà di scelta tra un’idea maschile e femminile, una scelta che ha luogo quando l’a vanguardia storica assume quell’a tteggiamento imperativo secondo il quale non esiste altro modo di progredire se non quello di aderire senza condizioni ad una tendenza. Forse anche perché il modernismo ha progredito all’insegna della semplificazione. In Europa nel bene o nel male i nostri capolavori li abbiamo salvati e molte testimonianze sono state tutelate. Ci siamo per così dire assicurati una forma di continuità con il passato; in alcune parti del mondo contemporaneo invece tutto questo non avviene perché il ciclone moderno si è abbattuto su di esso e rischia di sradicare totalmente il passato. E a quel punto l’eclettismo sarà come la democrazia, una necessità fondativa della tradizione culturale e non potrà più essere stigmatizzata, ma, invece, apprezzata nei suoi aspetti di autentica libertà. F. Gehry è sicuramente un eroe contemporaneo alla costante ricerca di nuovi confini stilistici, ma la sua rischia di essere una strada senza prospettive : cosa si potrà fare dopo aver esplorato tutte le linee oblique? La smania per un’esplosione di novità avvenuta negli ultimi vent’a nni, la frenesia di accrescere il repertorio delle

society’s prevailing tastes in order to invent another way of living. Thus, eclecticism may be considered a way of reconciling artistic culture and society. Eclecticism has ancient origins. Its practice in Greek society, for example, was a crucial choice due to the necessity of a relationship with other societies and was refined over time as a way of equating different tastes and different stylistic connotations, thus leaving the sense of a freedom of choice between a male and a female idea. This choice takes place when the historical avant-garde assumes an imperative approach according to which there is no way forward except by subscribing unconditionally to a trend. Perhaps also because modernism has advanced in the name of simplification. In Europe, for better or for worse, we have saved our masterpieces and many pieces have been protected. In a manner of speaking, we have been assured a sort of continuity with the past. However, this has not been the case in some parts of the contemporary world because a firestorm of modernity has struck, threatening to totally eradicate the past. At this point, eclecticism is like democracy, a well-founded necessity of a cultural tradition that can no longer be stigmatized, but rather must be appreciated for its aspects of true freedom. F. Gehry is definitely a contemporary hero constantly in search of new stylistic boundaries who nonetheless risks encountering a dead-end. What can be done once all the oblique lines have been explored? This craze for explosive innovation over the last twenty years and this fury to increase the abstract repertoire without worrying about people’s lives and how they live together has only resulted in the overexposure of a design that is pathologically cold, painfully repetitive, and “dogmatic”.

cose astratte senza preoccuparsi della vita degli uomini e della loro convivenza, ha solo generato una sovraesposizione di un design patologicamente freddo, spasmodicamente ripetitivo e “dogmatico”. Anche se alcune caratteristiche etniche tendono lentamente a scomparire, gli uomini non perdono la loro identità. Il ritorno all’eclettismo non è quindi pura ricerca esteriore, parte dal rispetto dell’identità e della capacità di dialogo di tradizioni e stili diversi. Qualcosa di simile avviene già nel campo della scienza umanistica: per la prima volta, dopo tanti decenni, noti esponenti della cultura internazionale parlano di filosofie orientali, di analogie tra la loro visione aggiornatissima e quella dei filosofi greci; non hanno cioè una percezione della storia come un vettore che vada in una unica direzione, ma come una spirale che continuamente recupera. In un certo senso l’eclettismo è una visione matura dell’umanità e oggi, in tanto giovanilismo, si capisce il perché non venga coltivata, dato che risponde a quella visione complessa ed equilibrata che caratterizza gli anni della maturità dell’uomo. Una complessità che certi designers non hanno mai saputo apprezzare, perché non sono mai riusciti a raggiungerla veramente a causa di una smodata smania di coerenza, di fuga dalle contraddizioni. Il senso della tradizione è un dato che riemerge sempre, persino in Le Corbousier; lui ha predicato l’azzeramento per ragioni ideologiche, anche se la sua passione per il classicismo è stata sempre evidente. In fondo il purismo di Le Corbusier - nato proprio dal cubismo - è come un ritorno apollineo dopo un momento dionisiaco. E l’a lternanza di questi fattori è diventata una necessità.

Although some ethnic features tend to slowly disappear, people do not lose their identity. The return to eclecticism is thus not pure outward research, it starts from a respect for identity and from a skillful dialogue with various traditions and styles. Something similar is already happening in the field of human science. For the first time in many decades, renowned international cultural exponents are speaking about Eastern philosophies, of the similarities between their very up-to-date visions and those of Greek philosophers. They do not perceive history as a vector that goes in one direction, but as a spiral that continuously regenerates. In a sense, eclecticism is a carefully considered vision of humanity and today, with all the attempts to stay young, we understand the reason why it has not been cultivated, given that it responds to the complex and objective vision that distinguishes a person’s mature years. It is a sophistication that certain designers have never been able to appreciate as they have never truly been able to attain it because of an inordinate craving for consistency and an escape from its contradictions. An awareness of tradition is something that always resurfaces, even in Le Corbusier. He preached a zeroing-out for ideological reasons, although his passion for the classical was always obvious. After all, Le Corbusier’s purism, influenced by cubism, is like an Apollonian return after a Dionysian period. And the alternation of these factors has become a necessity.

Il pluralismo delle idee e degli stili si presenta come la sensazione di tante cose accostate l’una all’a ltra, ognuna per conto suo in tutte le direzioni, l’eclettismo invece comporta la sensazione di una scelta delle migliori tradizioni, di un serrato sincronismo tra artigianalità e style, che il designer avanguardista (è nel suo DNA) europeo tende a non applicare per motivi tendenzialmente emotivi. Per tutte queste ragioni Mantellassi 1926 ha voluto dedicare la nuova collezione “Donna Mantellassi” all’eclettismo come “riscoperta” filosofica e filologica del proprio fare design. Le sue “proposte” di arredamento non sono un insieme casuale di citazioni, ma una scelta attenta e consapevole di quanto di meglio si possa ritrovare nell’esperienza del design. Perché chiudersi in un’esperienza del passato fine a se stessa o “rinchiudersi” in un’esperienza del presente senza umanità, senza identità, completamente slegato da miti e tradizioni locali? A quale fine? Per quale ideale abitativo? Il modernismo si è tagliato le ali escludendo il rapporto diretto con la propria storia. Mantellassi 1926 dà conto ad un’idea di immutabilità nel tempo dei valori della tradizione artistica stratificatesi nelle azioni e nei gesti, “portatrice” di una pausa di riflessione autentica : metafora veritiera di un designer che sta seduto con un’idea serenamente eclettica a contemperare tra le diverse linee e stili quelle che preferisce per poi operare su di esse, e attraverso di esse, una sintesi creativa.

craftsmanship and style which European avant-garde designers (it is in their DNA) tend not to use for basically emotional reasons. For all these reasons, Mantellassi 1926 has decided to dedicate its new Donna Mantellassi collection to eclecticism as a philosophical and philological “rediscovery” of its own art of designing. The Furniture “offerings” are not a random collection of references, but a carefully conscious choice of the best to be found in the design experience. Why be locked into an experience of the past for its own sake or “retreat” into an experience of the present that lacks humanity or identity and is completely detached from local myths and traditions? To what end? For which ideal of home? Modernism has clipped its wings by rejecting a direct relationship with its own history. Mantellassi 1926 believes in the idea of the immutability over time of the values of the artistic tradition layered by actions and gestures, “bearer” of an authentic moment of reflection. It is a true metaphor of a designer who is seated with the serenely eclectic idea of reconciling the various lines and styles, the ones he prefers, to then achieve, through them, a creative synthesis.

The pluralism of ideas and styles is introduced as a sense of many things placed side by side every which way, each on its own. Instead eclecticism implies a sense of the choice among the best traditions, of a close harmonization of

In seguito alle nuove direzioni di marketing intraprese, è stato inserito nello staff la figura del responsabile per pavimenti e decorazioni in legno, pietra, acciaio e ottone.

Following the directions of new marketing initiatives, the person in charge of floors and decorations in wood, stone, steel and brass has been included in the staff.

Le varie proposte, attualmente a progetto, sono così suddivise : Progenie : un puzzle da scegliere di legni, marmi, metalli e cuoio, assemblati su piastrelle di differenti dimensioni. I disegni sono i più vari, con richiami agli straordinari capolavori fiorentini del Rinascimento. Marqueterie : intarsio eseguito con diverse essenze, progettato come elemento decorativo centrale. Intarsio geometrico : eseguito con un solo tipo di legno, da scegliere tra i più nobili come Rovere, Noce americano, Quercia, Ciliegio americano, Teak, Ipe e molti altri. Lavorazioni come la sabbiatura pesante e la tamponatura manuale esaltano questo tipo di superficie. Pavimenti in legno antico : partendo volta per volta dalla disponibilità di antichi legni (si trovano Teak, Noce, Quercia) vengono effettuati interventi di ripristino e montati secondo il progetto, che tiene conto delle caratteristiche del materiale ritrovato. Sono stati effettuati, per esempio, pavimenti con Rovere recuperato da botti antiche, con l’incredibile colorazione del mosto.

The various proposals currently in the project are divided as follows : Progeny : a puzzle to choose in wood, marble, metals and leather, assembled on tiles of different sizes. The patterns are extremely varied, with reference to the extraordinary masterpieces of the Florentine Renaissance. Marquetry : inlay made with different essences, designed as a central decorative element. Geometric inlay : made with only one type of wood to choose from among the noblest as Oak, American Walnut, American Cherry, Teak, Ipe and many others. Processing such as heavy sandblasting and manual plugging enhance this type of surface. Antique wood floors : starting from the availability of ancient woods (Teak, Walnut, Oak), restoration is carried out and they are assembled according to the project, which takes into account the characteristics of the material found. For example, some floors have been carried out with Oak recovered from old barrels with the incredible coloration of the must.
