Talk is fundamental in developing English and ensuring full access to the curriculum. For pupils who lack confidence in speaking English, the RECORDING function of the PENpal and the new Bluetooth ClassroomPEN is a great way to encourage speaking skills. They can listen to texts in English with the pens and then model their voices and practice at their own pace until they get their pronunciation and intonation right.

The PENpal and ClassroomPENs enable teachers to create their own audio resources and pupils to sound enable their work.

Best practise for using Recordable Labels • EAL pupils record in their home language to show their skills • Pupils hear a story in English and then record their retelling in their home language • Pupils can record words they are spelling and the phonemes or graphemes that make up the word • Reticent writers and learners can record their achievement and work orally • Teachers can customise instructions and plan audio activities for individual pupils • Create Audio enhanced Flashcards or games for vocabulary building • Use for assessment as teachers can save their pupils’ recordings and assess progress over time • Record messages from parents and playback when child at nursery becomes anxious.

First we recommend watching Rochdale Council’s superb video. Enter the mind of a new pupil - their fears, their anxiety of wanting to fit in. We have a number of resources that will help you to get started. Use the PENpal and our talking printed dual language books or ebooks for listening in the home language. If a specific language is unavailable, you can use PENpal and recordable labels and sound enable any book with narrations in that language. It is important that parents too see the school cares and supports their children and helps them engage and participate in school activities. With so little English vocabulary, how can I help the pupil to develop quickly in confidence and speaking? “ “ Learn to Speak in English

Ebooks Learn to Read English What products are there to support my EAL pupils with reading?” “ “

Our approach to learning English is through the medium of stories so words and meaning are within a story context. Editors ask translators to give priority to maintaining tension, rather than word for word translations. Our publishing philosophy follows Prof Stephen Krashen’s ideas in language learning.

Language learning is about developing confidence in communication. We recommend our dual language ebook library - more accessible, more robust than book/pen and with more interactivity.

EAL Co-ordinators can begin by taking the notes of EAL advisors who share e-notes on each story: what are the difficult words, sections, what to look out for, how to encourage building synonym banks, etc.

A 5 step process is recommended: 1. Listen and/read the story in the home language to get a good understanding of the story - the characters, setting and plot. 2. Every story has a video, using the same illustrations for visual signposting but now the telling is in English only. Enjoy listening to a new language - its intonations, speed of telling, oracy.

3. Then start on page 1 again, this time tapping the English. Spoken text is highlighted to road map audio with text. Listen over and over. With PENpal and labels, practice pronunciation to build confidence in speaking. Concurrently use the Phonics Pack to learn to read words and sentences.

Another interactive features is a Glossary where difficult words are supported by definition & synonyms.

4. Role of the EAL Advisor/Co-ordinator Each title has Teachers Notes which lists advice on what to look out for page by page - tricky words, sight words, what to check for, etc. Your EAL co-ordinator could add to these specific to the child. These can be used as notes - a permanent feature on every page.

When a reader is confident with the story, they can try the follow-up activities:

5. Sequencing images: This can be used to assess home language literacy. Ask the pupil to read in L1 and then try sequencing. Or, listen in L1 and then try.

8. Role for the EAL Advisor/Co-ordinator The dual language ebook platform collates data on a pupil’s progress. Which books read, how long, which activities completed, etc.

6. Each book has interactive sound cards of nouns and names in the story, in English. And then test with the Labelling activity. Compliment these with the physical interactive flash cards with PENpal (Pg 8) to build vocabulary.
