Priory Farm To Celebrate Diamond Anniversary At This Year’s Strawberry Fair Priory Farm is preparing for a bumper Strawberry Fair this year as the Shinner family celebrates 60 years since John and Wendy Shinner first took ownership of the farm. The much-anticipated food festival, which has been a highlight on the summer event calendar for the past seven years, will see more than 40 artisan food and drink producers set up stall in Priory Farm Shop’s courtyard on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th June.

T

he annual event draws food lovers from across Surrey and beyond to enjoy tastings of fine and locally-made food and drink, including handmade breads, regional cheeses and real ales. Shoppers will have a chance to try before they buy with plenty of free tastings available over the two days, and a sizzling barbecue will serve up sausages and burgers made by Priory Farm’s own butcher. And for dessert, it has to be some of the hundreds of kilos of strawberries the Farm Shop expects to sell over the weekend. Among the new products set to make their debut at the

With the popularity of small-batch artisan spirits on the rise, this addition to the line-up is expected to be a real crowd-pleaser. Meanwhile, young visitors can enjoy a taste of life on the farm with tractor rides and a summer-themed nature trail on the Discovery Walk, as well as a host of other family-friendly activities over the weekend. It’s always a great day out and this just makes it extra special for all of us.” Priory Farm has seen quite an evolution since 27-year-old John Shinner bought the farm at auction in 1957, and in its diamond anniversary year visitors to the Strawberry Fair will be able to read about the history of the farm and see family photos taken throughout the decades. Can’t Stop Rio Rain! That title is an anagram of procrastination. I worked it out while I was putting off writing this article about procrastination. Why am I writing about it when I should be writing about a community issue? It is because I procrastinated so long before contacting the event organiser that now it is too late. County Characters - A Resident Remembers... The most interesting people are often the most interested people and local resident, Brian Frost, is a case in point. What he knows of the area and its characters is fascinating. He contacted RH Uncovered to share some snippets of his RH knowledge. By Sarah Ballingal

B

rian’s grandmother worked in Surrey as a maid to the Doulton family, of china factory fame where she once served a meal to Henry Morton Stanley the journalist and explorer who greeted a famous missionary with the immortal words, “Dr Livingstone, I presume?” Brian knew another missionary, Dr Stanley Hoyte. This doctor served in China for many years, during which time he met Gladys Alyward and Sun Yat-Sen. In his later years he came to Reigate and established Dungate Manor Care Home in Flanchford Road. Brian tells how Methodist founder, John Wesley, once stayed at Reigate Priory and continuing this clerical theme, remembers that an assistant at Bletchingly Parish Church ventured abroad and became a Bishop and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize – Desmond Tutu! Talking of tutus, all locals know Reigate’s statute of ballerina, Margot Fonteyn, but as Brian points out, why no statue to David Sheppard? Born in Reigate a decade after Dame Margot, he was England cricket captain and later Bishop of Liverpool. Brian’s school days were spent at Reigate Grammar where he belonged to a literary and debating society and he remembers giving a vote of thanks to world famous Bible translator, Rev J B Phillips, vicar at St John’s, Redhill. One of Brian’s friends at that time was Geoffrey Clarke who worked for Christian Reconstruction in Europe as part of his contribution to the Second World War.

A member of Geoffrey’s church (Reigate Congregational) was Jean Metcalfe who went on to marry broadcaster, Cliff Michelmore, whom she met through Two Way Family Favourites. They eventually settled in Reigate’s West Street. Incidentally, a nearby house to Brian’s was once home to the mechanic who helped Donald Campbell achieve his record holder status. Other notable local characters include film mogul, J Arthur Rank, once a Reigate Sunday school teacher and Horley actor Jonathan Field who appeared with Laurence Olivier in the 1944 film Henry V. When not appearing on the big screen, Jonathan took part in productions at the Archway Theatre where the current patron is Dame Judi Dench, famous for her prolific acting career. Brian wonders if many know of her membership of the Reigate Quakers? As a teenager, Brian himself took confirmation classes at St Luke’s Church in South Park, Reigate under the tutelage of the curate, Hubert Brasier. It may not be a name familiar to many, but that of his daughter certainly is for she is Theresa May - at time of writing, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom! 1) Henry Morton Stanley 2) Desmond Tutu (Photo from Tinseltown) 3) Dame Judi Dench (Photo from Featureflash Photo Agency) 4) Theresa May (Photo from Frederic Legrand - COMEO) All images from shutterstock.com

Paws For Thought I am very keen on recycling. Many of the important things in my life are second-hand: my home, my clothes, even my husband and my cat! When it comes to four-legged family members, offering a new home to a needy animal can reap rewards for both pet and owner.

F

By Sarah Ballingal

or more than 30 years Horley’s Animal Protection Trust has been rescuing, treating and rehoming unwanted domestic animals. They do their best for every creature brought to them, and those they cannot help are referred to other rescue organisations. They never destroy a healthy animal, and however long it takes, an appropriate home is sought for each one. A major part of their work is promoting the importance of neutering and micro-chipping. Much needless suffering could be prevented if more owners took this responsible step. This heart-warming story on the Trust’s website emphasises the importance of micro-chipping. Gill Osborne tells of a Jack Russell found running loose in a Surrey village: “The young man knocked on some doors to see if he could find the owner.

No-one knew who the dog belonged to and suggested that it might have come from a travellers’ camp up the road. He then rang his mother for advice and she asked me what he should do, so I said he should take it to the local vets for scanning to see if it had been chipped and then could be returned to the owners. It was chipped! The owners lived in Wembley and had reported the dog as stolen six months earlier. They were

over the moon as they thought they would never see their dog, Lola, again.” The Trust is staffed entirely by volunteers who put in hours of practical care. They do not charge for any of their services and consequently, any donation, large or small, is much appreciated and enables them to continue with this essential work. Membership of the Trust is just £12.00 a year (£18.00 for a couple). Not all members need to be helpers, nor are all helpers members, but everyone is offered the opportunity to become involved in this valuable life-enhancing work, and what could be more lifeenhancing than receiving the unconditional love of a pet. As one grateful owner told the Trust about their new dog, ‘We can’t thank you enough for all your work and for helping Gatsby and us find each other!’ Another Happy Ending...

COVER STORY

Take To The Skies At

British Airways i360 A visit to British Airways i360 in Brighton, the world’s first vertical cable car, is a unique experience for the whole family to enjoy By Jacob White

B

righton’s newest seaside attraction, British Airways i360, made a big impact when it opened in August last year. The futuristic glass observation pod, which rises to 138m, dominates the city’s skyline and has already wowed thousands of visitors. Every 30 minutes, up to 200 people gently glide up to 450ft in the giant glass pod to enjoy 360 degree unfolding views across Brighton, the south coast and, on the clearest days, all the way to Beachy Head and the Isle of Wight.

Conceived and designed by Marks Barfield Architects, creators of the London Eye, British Airways i360 is acknowledged by Guinness World Records as the world’s most slender tower. Driven by state-of-the-art cable car technology, the design is as impressive as it is innovative. The idea was born in 2005 to create a ‘vertical pier’ on Brighton seafront, located on the site of the original West Pier. Guests can ‘walk on air’ and gain a unique perspective on the city from above, just as the original pier welcomed Victorian society to ‘walk on water’.

It took 10 years and the expertise of hundreds of people across Europe to turn British Airways i360 from a concept into reality. This summer it is ready to welcome you and your family to see the coast from a seagull’s view. Following your flight you can visit the onsite gift shop, grab a bite to eat in the restaurant or walk straight out onto the beach for a paddle in the sea. Rain or shine, British Airways i360 will never fail to lift your spirits.

Competition Time! We’ve teamed up with British Airways i360 to offer you the chance to WIN tickets for flights at the landmark attraction so you and a friend can take to the skies. To enter visit our website www.rhuncovered.co.uk

Family Fun Children absolutely love the British Airways i360 pod. Families are free to walk around, pointing out landmarks, watching seagulls and spotting boats out at sea. Before boarding the pod, tech-savy children can enjoy animations and a photo hunt around the site on the free-to-download British Airways i360 app. Sky High Refreshments On board the pod, enjoy a drink at the Nyetimber Sky Bar, one of the most unique bars in the UK, serving a range of fine drinks from Sussex including Nyetimber, an award winning sparkling wine. If you are seeking the romantic touch, take an evening flight to enjoy the sunset and twinkling city lights below.

Wine and Dine Visitors can relax over a delicious meal in the stylish restaurant which boasts stunning views from its beachside terrace. Serving dishes created using locally-sourced ingredients, the menus are inspired by the seasons. The modern bistro is ideal for families and has a wide variety of options for adults and children alike. Alternatively, you can enjoy a classic afternoon tea served with finger sandwiches, scones and a selection of mini patisseries. If you are looking for something a little more informal, do not worry - If you are looking for a light bite, head to the West Pier Tea Room for coffee and cake.

TRAVEL

Thailand Uncovered

Wow! We are into June! What an amazing few months, I have enjoyed meeting so many new people and booking some fabulous holidays for my customers. As the dark evenings become distant memories so do dreams of glorious beaches and sun drenched adventures.

H

By Beverley Neal

old that dream! It is a great time to start thinking about your winter holiday as our colder months are the best time to travel to some of the world’s further reaches. Whether travelling in or out of school holidays booking early can get you some great deals if you want to go South, East or West. The Southern Hemisphere moves into summer so South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and South America all become more desirable. The searing heat of the summer ends in Dubai and the monsoon leaves India, Sri Lanka and the Maldives to their peak season. It is a great time to visit the Far East, this article is all about Thailand.

Bangkok is an absolute shock to the senses but it is also my favourite city in the world. It is busy and noisy but you can walk for miles, eat and drink at street side food stalls and even barter for your new selfie stick or designer knock off. It has shaken off its seedy reputation and I think of it more now for its boutique eateries and funky, hidden or rooftop bars. As well as all of this you have some spectacular architecture in the Thai palaces, stupas and temples.

The peak months for Thailand travel are between November to March where the heavy humidity lifts and the days turn dry and sunny.

A side trip from Bangkok may include a trip to Kanchaniburi to see the famous Bridge Over The River Kwai and the area that was home to the Prisoner of War camps during the Japanese occupation during the Second World War. To avoid anymore ights you could twin with a few nights in the coastal towns of Hua Hin or Pattaya.

The northern capital of Chiang Mai, close to the borders of Myanmar and Laos offers some respite to the craziness of Bangkok. Hidden away in the mountains and jungles of the north, the city boasts a quieter, more traditional Thailand with a laid back atmosphere and cultural highlights including visits to the local hill tribes or rainforest treks.

Any trip to Thailand would not be complete without a stay on one of its pristine beaches. On the western side is the area known as Phang Nga, home to the lush rainforest of Khao Sok National Park and stretching down to the wellknown beach resorts of Phuket, Krabi and their islands such as Koh Phi Phi or Koh Yao Noi. The airport is growing so quickly on Phuket that it is now easy to get to the island quite reasonably, with a choice of Thai Airways via Bangkok but also many of the Middle Eastern carriers. I could go on for days about the different resorts and regions around Phuket but let’s just say there is something for everyone, but everything is fantastic value. My particular favourite is combining a few nights in Elephant Hills in the rainforest with the beaches of Khao Lak and Phuket and the views from Yao Noi and Krabi of the iconic limestone karsts in the bay.

Lastly we jump over to Koh Samui, a jewel in Thailand’s crown. The weather here runs opposite to Phuket so the best time to visit is in our summer, perfect for school holidays or honeymoons. The island is small and as Bangkok Airways maintain the airport (and therefore the flight costs) the fewer arrivals offer a more exclusive and secluded feel. Once a stopover on the hippy trail to Kathmandu, Samui holds on to its backpacker heritage and the island exudes a feel of traditional Thai-ness. There are busy parts around Chaweng but the beaches are still beautiful and the views across the islands dotted throughout the National Marine Park of Ang Thong are glorious. Thailand is pretty much on the beaten track for us now, the destination is serviced by most major airlines and internal access is good but there are still so many hints and tips needed to get your holiday just perfect. If you are thinking about your next holiday to the Far East get in touch…

STYLE

Conditioning Your Hair For Summer

The summer sun and heat can take it out of our hair - now more than ever conditioning is important to keep tresses looking and feeling great! By Shelley Welti

H

ere are our favourite homemade recipes to keep your hair looking HOT and frazzle-free.

Mediterranean Moisture We all know that the healthy Mediterranean diet and olive oil go hand-in-hand, so it istime to take inspiration from the strong locks, and diets of the Italians, Spanish and Greeks and treat our hair to an olive oil treatment. Warm up 125ml of olive oil and drench your tresses with it. Then cover with a plastic bag, wrap in a towel and relax for 45 minutes. Simply shampoo and rinse out to reveal revived and happy hair! Oil Rich Avocado Mask The superfood of the moment – is there nothing the humble avocado cannot do? Instead of mashing it up for your toast, mix with an egg and apply to wet hair for a moisture-rich treatment that will have your hair back to its bouncy best before breakfast. After 20 minutes, wash off and style as normal. Rich in vitamins and fatty acids, this trusty avocado treatment should be used once a week to restore a healthy shine to stressed-out tresses. An Egg-cellent Moisture Treatment Our locks need protein to be healthy, so this eggcellent DIY egg treatment will certainly help to make tired tresses feel fabulous again. Simply mix two egg yolks with two teaspoons of vegetable oil and two teaspoons of water and massage into your hair after shampooing. Leave for 30 minutes then rinse out with cool water for hair that feels shiny and strong!

Bananas for a Banana Mask Reach for the fruit bowl and instead of tucking into a banana, mash it up with a tablespoon of olive oil until it resembles a puree to create a hair mask that will not only smell fruity but leave your locks feeling juicy too! Massage into dry hair and leave for at least thirty minutes. Rinse thoroughly, shampoo and style as normal. Conditioning Coconut Not just for the kitchens of the health-conscious; coconut oil really is a natural wonder product when it comes to dry skin and hair. Spoon a tablespoon of coconut oil and heat for a few seconds to turn into a liquid. Then apply to the ends of damp hair. For sun-frazzled locks, leave on overnight and shampoo out the next morning for further conditioning.

MOTORING

The Dangers Of Log Book Delays According to a BBC investigation, buyers of nearly new cars are being affected by some dealers keeping hold of the log book for a period of time after the vehicle has been sold. By Ben Morley

A

ccording to the investigation, log book delays can cause a problem when it comes to getting tax, sorting out parking permits and even speeding fines being sent to the wrong address - although, I do not see what the problem is with that, to be honest! The problem arises where dealers are incentivised to sell excess stock of pre-registered cars at a discounted price. The caveat being that the effectively brand-new cars with delivery mileage on the speedo, are supposed to be kept off the road for 90 days after being registered before being sold. However, dealers are selling the cars on to new buyers almost straight

away, while remaining registered at a different address. The new buyers are told that the car will be registered in their name in due course approximately 90 days, it would seem. Obviously, there is a grey area with the log book because it clearly states that it indicates who the keeper of the vehicle is, not the owner, but it seems it still can cause an issue with things like taxing the car as it remains registered as off the road by the dealer. Further difficulties can arise when it comes to insuring the vehicle, as most will require you to disclose the details of both the owner and the keeper. Failure to do so were you to have an accident in the car, could result in red faces all round.

You can be fairly sure that the insurance company will not pay out if they can find a way of avoiding it. Grey areas and small print being top of their wriggling out of paying list! The moral of the story is, if you are buying a nearly new car, make sure that the dealer has fulfilled their obligation to keep it off of the road for the correct amount of time. Use a bit of common sense and if you are buying a nearly new car do not walk out of the dealership until the log book has been transferred into your name. It can be done online in a matter of minutes, simple really!

We don’t have any problems recommending the RH Uncovered magazine to other local businesses because we find it so successful! Interior Blinds UK Ltd are local manufacturers, suppliers and installers of made to measure bespoke blinds and are based in Crawley Down (RH10). They started advertising in our first RH Uncovered magazine soon after we launched in 2006. They have since increased their campaigns and now appear in three magazines, so we met with Brian and asked why they chose our RH Uncovered magazine to start their campaign all those years ago and how it has worked for them... “We were looking for a magazine that was going to be distributed locally. The beauty of using RH Uncovered really comes down to the fact in is going into local homes and distributed by the Royal Mail, and has articles as well as advertising inside it.

By advertising regularly and consistently, we find we get a very good return for the investment of the advert! We started off with using one of the magazines and now we use three of them on a regular basis so we get a large distribution throughout the whole of the local area.

We have built up this beautiful working relationship between our staff and their staff, to the point that they let us know what articles they are running so we can tailor our adverts to suit. What we do find is that more often than not somebody will walk in clutching a copy of the RH Uncovered magazine, or once we have asked them how they have heard us we find out that they have seen our advert. Changing Seasons – Here Comes The Sun! Thinking of accessorising for summer? The warmth of summer is here, so now is the time to add some summery ideas to your interior designing to make sure you change with the seasons! By Jacob White

J

une sees the longest day, the beginning of the Wimbledon Championships and Glastonbury Festival – all sure fire signs that the height of the British summer is here and we have a listed of the top 10 ways for you to get your home buzzing to the sights, scents and colours of the summer vibe of 2017! Pare Down Why not think of your home as a holiday apartment and see it in a new light? Get rid of pieces of furniture and fabrics which are dark or gloomy and stow away those heavy accessories, save the throws for autumn and winter!

Garden Fresh Bring the outdoors in! Freshly picked flowers can do marvels to a home – it is always best to go for arrangements that feature warm colours such as bold oranges and vibrant pinks – save reds and purples for the winter months!

Live Natural Add some organic appeal to your home! Why not consider introducing plants into the home? Some plants will require little care and they will be the perfect addition to a summery table or side unit display – natural equals character!

Furniture Update An effective way to bring new life to old furniture and add a splash of colour is to give a tired chair or table a new life with some summery hues! Make sure you properly prime the furniture before adding tones such as sky blue and grassy green.

Dine Colourfully Meal time is another chance for you to add a splash of colour to your – mix in some bright floral or tropical themes which will ramp-up your summertime look! A great idea is to set-up a small table to create an impromptu bar with bottles.

Swap Art If you have a dark wall or two in your home why not add some colourful art pieces? The art does not have to be expensive with affordable pieces available online or from a local charity shop. One large or several small pieces can do the trick!

New View A fireplace is great focal point during the winter months but why not considering moving your furniture away during summer? Rather than huddling around a source of winter warmth shift the focus to a window or French doors!

Emotional Fabric The colours we choose can instantly lift a room’s mood and in turn yours and that of your house guests. Try bright, botanical prints for 2017 on bedding. Let the patterns shine but make sure to keep the wall colours neutral.

Summer Scents If you like to have a fresh scent running through your home – whether you use candles, infuser sticks or plug-ins make sure you change with the seasons! Evergreen is good for winter but summer should be about ocean breeze!

Go Casual The summer offers opportunities to find unexpected uses for formal serving piece. Mix things up a little and be original, why not try these ideas – a silver try for holding your glassware or plant your herb garden in a champagne bucket!

GARDENS

Water Great Idea!

Water adds another dimension to any garden – the sight and sound of running water can lift and relax us no matter how stressful our day has been. The additional sound and light a water feature offers can bring a garden to life. Here are simple ideas to ensure your water feature is at is best. By Jacob White

T

he design of your water feature is important – it must be something that you can live with and be within your budget. The water feature does not have to include sculptures or fussy glitz – a simple, informal wildlife pool can still be stunning as an attractive addition as well as a learning resource. If you decide a pond is for you then here are some tip tops to make sure it works for you: Pond Life To ensure your new garden pond does not leak away use a good-quality liner such as a EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) liner which is at least 1mm thick. It is recommended that you lay the liner across an underlay.

Three-quarters of the sides of the pond should be planted with plants such as flowering rush or marsh marigold and although a natural pond does not get cleaned if you find your pond becomes sludgy use calcium sulphate to clean.

The drums must be installed outside of the pond – if you’re using the filter as part of an elaborate fountain it should be in keeping with it. If you are keeping fish it can be challenging to keep the water clear and you will need a more sophisticated filter.

Crystal Clear To keep a pond crystal clear you need to install a filtration system otherwise draining, cleaning and refilling is far too time-consuming. Self-cleaning drum filters which are either gravity-fed or pumped are a good choice for a pond novice.

Water Retention Water features lose water through evaporation faster than you may think – you can install an automatic top-up unit fitted with a sensor but these can be expensive and by law cannot be filled from the mains supply - a cheaper alternative is a garden hose.

Find Balance A good pH balance with no algal outbreaks is essential, to achieve this the pond needs to be ideally an area of 30m3 with a depth of around 1.5m in place and try to cover around two-thirds of the water surface with floating plants.

HEALTH

Five Minute Health Wins

For a healthier life we often think that we need to make a major overhaul but in fact it is far more simple than that and we have some quick and simple five minute health wins for you! By Jacob White The relentless pace of life in 2017 coupled with the constant pressures of work and home life mean we all too often spend little time thinking about our health and wellbeing. However, some small changes can make a big difference in the long-term because looking after ourselves today means we will be able to function more efficiently at work and at home and we will be less likely to succumb to illness. Get Moving The NHS recommends around 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week plus time on strength exercises. Many say they cannot spare the time, however, studies show that shorter bursts of high intensity or sprint exercises have greater health benefits so the excuse of little time does not wash! Top Tip! Remember, any exercise is better than no exercise! Try this, set your watch or mobile device for a five minute workout. Sprint as fast as you can (on the spot if necessary) for 20 seconds, jog for a further 20 seconds and then walk for 20 seconds and all you need to do is repeat this five times. Forward Planning The saying is that ‘failing to prepare is preparing to fail’ – when surrounded by unhealthy choices at every turn it is no surprise that our willpower can let us down when we are stressed, tired or hungry. Top Tip! Take five minutes each day to plan your meals and buy healthy snacks for when you are on the go!

42

www.rhuncovered.co.uk

Phone A Friend It is well known that a good network of friends and successful relationships help maintain a healthy state of mind. Despite, this 1 in 4 of us still suffer from a form of mental health struggle in our life. Top Tip! Take five minutes out of your busy day to chat with a friend or work colleague about what is on your mind – by doing so you are strengthening your relationship as well as keeping your mind refreshed.

Breathe Thinking about our physical health is one thing but sometimes we neglect our mental health. Our brain needs downtime, stop for at least five minutes each day and focus on your breathing. Top Tip! Set a timer and sit in a quiet place, this could even be in your car before work or before visiting a local supermarket. Focus on taking deep breaths in through the nose and out through the mouth.

RH Uncovered

@RHUncovered

Positive Thinking There are times when even the most optimistic amongst us feel as though the world is waging war on us – at work deadlines are dragging us down and at home we feel like we are being left listless. It is not just a cliché – looking on the bright side of life can make things feel better and breed success. Top Tip! Rather than feeling down in the dumps, use five minutes of your time to list all of the things that you can feel grateful for regardless of their size. Lift your mood and make this a regular habit!

The Complimentary View I have been a practising chiropractor for almost 40 years and have been fortunate enough to have spent the last 25 years working in Reigate. We established The Reigate Chiropractic Clinic in May 1992, in the GP surgery in Yorke Road, in rooms, previously occupied by the dentists who moved to Ringley Park. Now, we have moved to an excellent location opposite the town hall in Reigate. It occurred to me that it would be fun to share with the RH Uncovered readers over the coming months answers to some of the most popular questions I am asked as a complimentary practitioner. Far and away, the commonest of all is:

What is the difference between an osteopath and a chiropractor?

The way I would answer this question now, is very different from the way I would have answered it 40 years-ago. As a newly qualified chiropractor, I naturally believed that we were far superior to osteopaths in every way! I think it would be fair to say that we saw them as the enemy and I am sure the osteopaths felt the same! Both professions tended to emphasise their differences and ignore their similarities. There were certainly historical differences, but both disciplines were about the same age, having been founded in the USA in the early 20th century. Chiropractors tended to use more x-rays and had a reputation for ‘cracking’ joints. Osteopaths were often seen as more gentle and possibly were more concerned with joints, other than those of the spine. Things are very different now! I think both professions have moved on. The truth as

far as I am concerned is that osteopaths and chiropractors are very similar. There is diversity within both disciplines with each offering a range of techniques and approaches. Ultimately, the one thing which really matters is how good the practitioner is! For this reason, whenever I am asked “Who should I see, an osteopath or a chiropractor”? I always reply “Go to the one who has been recommended to you!” Personal recommendation is always the best way to find someone who is good. It might be from your GP or another practitioner who will, themselves, have had a professional association with them. There are good and not-so-good in every profession and trade and we tend to trust personal endorsement. It makes sense to do the same when you are looking for someone to help you to get out of pain!
