Easter

A Story of Triumph When you visit the London Temple Visitors’ Centre, you will see a replica of Thorvaldsen’s Christus, depicting the resurrected Christ with wounds in his side, hands, and feet that remind us of the cruelties Christ suffered on the cross.

Despite those cruelties and the infinite agonies of Gethsemane, Christ’s outstretched arms beckon all to come unto him. The story of Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection is a story of triumph. It testifies that Christ’s suffering, crucifixion, and resurrection brought him and us victory and that Christ’s life did not end on the cross at Calvary. All this happened according to God’s plan before we came to earth.

To understand that plan, we must understand that Christ was “in the beginning with the Father.” So were we. 1 In our pre-mortal life, we were spirit children of God. We knew and worshipped him as our Father and accepted his plan for our happiness. That plan required that we come to earth and receive physical bodies so that, in time, we could become like him and ultimately live with him again.

However, our earthly experience would require faith. We would no longer be in God’s presence. We would also suffer 8 - LONDON TEMPLE

illness and death and sometimes make mistakes that would cause feelings of guilt and regret.

God foresaw those difficulties and promised to send Christ to save us from death and to help us correct wrong choices and avoid their long-term consequences.

To be our Savior, Christ had to “be touched with the feeling of our infirmities.” 2 Therefore, he would suffer “pains and afflictions and temptations of every kind” so he could understand us and take upon him our “pains and sicknesses.”

He would also take upon him death so he could “loose the bands of death...” 3 He would indeed be “lifted up upon the cross” so he could “draw all men unto [him].” 4 We testify that Christ’s suffering and resurrection are real. Hundreds of eye witnesses in the Bible and

the Book of Mormon attest to their reality. In modern times, the prophet Joseph Smith added this testimony of the resurrected Christ: “And now, after the many testimonies which have been given of him, this is the testimony, last of all, which we give of him: That he lives!

For we saw him, even on the right hand of God; and we heard the voice bearing record that he is the Only Begotten of the Father—That by him, and through him, and of him, the worlds are and were created, and the inhabitants thereof are begotten sons and daughters unto God.” 5 1: Doctrine and Covenants 93: 21, 23 2: Hebrews 4: 15 3: Alma 7: 11, 12 4: 3 Nephi 27: 14 5: Doctrine and Covenants 76: 22-24

Community Noticeboard Happy Easter! And welcome to the community pages of the April issue.

This month, there is an interview with the president of the Rotary club of Cuckfield and Lindfield, as he told me more about why he joined and the role he plays. Two charities, both Kangaroos and Action for Deafness spoke to me about some inspiring stories with the work that goes on in their charity and their upcoming work.

The Great Bike Ride

Haywards Heath Update Reception

There’s not long left until the Great Haywards Heath Bike Ride, next month on Sunday 18th May. If you are interested in completing the event and haven’t yet registered then have no fear… there is still time! With four refreshed routes, a new mini bike ride for under-fives, it’s a great day out for all the family, whilst raising money for charity at the same time.

The Haywards Heath Town Team hosted their first update briefing of 2014 at The Birch Hotel. We went along to see what will be happening in our town!

Ruth de Mierre, chair of the Town Team, welcomed everyone for coming, and thanked Patrick from The Birch Hotel for hosting the evening. The Birch sponsored the meeting and Patrick told the crowd about their upcoming refurbishments in the hotel. Our town Mayor, Sandy Ellis, spoke to everyone about the Burrell Road Action Group and the WW1 memorial garden down by Sainsbury’s which is being worked on currently. They hope to fill it with poppies and it is being supported by the WSCC – a local poet has even written a poem for the garden!

Pre-registration will be in The Orchard’s Shopping Centre on Saturday 17th May, for everyone to get their kit, t-shirts, and get prepared for the ride.

In its fourth year, the Bike Ride will be in aid of local cancer patients this year, together with St Catherine’s Hospice. If you’re not a cyclist and would still like to be involved, contact Ruth de Mierre on ruth@i-dmc.co.uk, and become part of the marshall or registration teams.

Nicola Bird, the Orchards manager discussed the upcoming events, such as Strictly Come Gardening, last year hosting 27,000 and this year hoping to be bigger and better! As well as the first wedding and fashion show, they are putting on a charity fun day on the 7th June to raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital – Zumbathons and dance classes will be on the agenda!

There is also talk of a food festival happening in September, so keep your eyes peeled in the upcoming issues to hear more.

The principal of Central Sussex College spoke out about local businesses who may be interested in running apprenticeship schemes for her students, too.

It was a great evening to learn how much hard work is being put in our town… and more information on all the events will be covered in the coming months.

Action for Deafness’ 20 year anniversary This year, Haywards Heath charity Action for Deafness, is celebrating their 20 year anniversary.

Chris Wingrove, operations manager at Action for Deafness in Haywards Heath, told me more about the background of their charity and For the past couple of decades, they have been what they hope to do to celebrate their delivering services to Deaf and hard of hearing long-running success. Chris started working people. In April 1994 they successfully secured for the charity in 2010 as an administrator, and in 2011 he visited Cambodia and Uganda to their core funding from West Sussex County see how the hearing aids make a difference.

Twenty years later, “Last year alone Action for Deafness saw over they have expanded into a charity providing 13,000 people for audiology appointments services such as NHS Audiology, lip reading and serviced over 17,000 hearing aids at its classes, Deaf awareness training, sign drop in clinics,” he explained. “The charity was language classes and an advocacy service. the first provider to gain UKAS accreditation for its audiology facilities – it now has six audiology centres across the county. State of the art equipment is used for testing hearing and fitting hearing aids and ongoing support is always available at any of our centres.”

It is estimated that more than ten million people in the UK have a hearing loss, and this is expected to increase.

As Chris explained: “We have added more audiology rooms in Haywards Heath and Worthing. Patient satisfaction is high with 98% of patients saying they would recommend the service to a friend.”

To celebrate 20 years of service provision the charity hopes to raise £20,000 from fundraising events throughout the year.

Get to know your councillors: Richard Bates This is the first of a new series of features in RH16/17 Uncovered to learn about those that are working hard in our community. This month, Richard Bates, a Liberal Democrat Town and District Councillor for Ashenground, spoke to me about how he ended up in his role.

“I was first a Councillor in 1979 in Brighton.

I was an Environmental Liberal, however I eventually gleaned that I am a fourth generation Liberal and needed to maintain the family tradition.”

Richard returned back to his hometown of Haywards Heath to act as a carer, and eventually stood for the Haywards Heath Ashenground Ward as a Town Councillor.

“I see myself as a Ward Councillor taking up issues for residents,” said Richard.

“My main roles on Council are planning as I have a career in the construction industry and

celebrate success and Easter Kangaroos charity in Mid Sussex helps to provide opportunities for disabled children and young adults. They aim to deliver fun experiences, allowing the kids to interact with their peers and learn new skills.

This year, Kangaroos is celebrating their 20th birthday. As well as continuing their main projects and running a series of Easter events for the children, they will be working hard to fundraise for new equipment.

They have their own club where they can meet friends in a safe environment. “They can relax and do some of the things any teenager wants to do,” said Lorna. No Limits is a programme for young people to enjoy leisure and sport activities outside the home. It is a chance for young people to meet up with old school friends, and make new ones along the way. They want to broaden their horizons, enabling them to feel less isolated. This Easter, the youngsters involved in all three projects run by Kangaroos will be taking part in a range of activities and trips, and Lorna lets us know what they will be getting up to: “PALS will be going and feeding the lambs at Seven Sisters Sheep Farm, Easter egg hunt around Borde Hill and Hydortherapy and sensory sessions. BreakAway will be going trampolining, creating Easter crafts and visiting Newhaven Fort. No Limits will be visiting Hollycombe Steam Fair, having a pizza party at Frankie and Benny’s and having an Easter themed disco.”

Community News An insight into The Rotary Club of

Cuckfield and Lindfield Rotary clubs are a worldwide network of men and women, inspired to help relevant social causes and change lives in their own communities.

There are over 1.2 million Rotary members and 34,000 Rotary clubs over the world. In 1932, the Rotary Club of Haywards Heath was formed, however to cater for the increasing number of businessmen in the area, a new ‘evening’ club was formed in 1984, and took its name from the principal two villages nearby, Cuckfield and Lindfield. Members have been holding their meetings now at the Bent Arms, Lindfield, since January 1990.

Beth, he enjoys hobbies of walking, cricket and driving older cars, as well as helping out in the community.

“Rotary membership gives the opportunity to serve, is great fun, and is rewarding.” said Barry.

When asked why he joined Rotary, Barry was clear that he was passionate about helping the community, “Having previously served in Round Table, I wanted to continue helping in the community and admired the active way Rotary dealt with need both nationally and internationally, ” he said. “I was delighted to join in the fellowship of those who were like-minded and were prepared to give generously of their time.”

Barry Reed, the current president of the Rotary Club, spoke to RH Uncovered about being a ‘Rotarian’. The club also fundraises for important causes in the community, “We have tended to support hospices both adult and child, and also disabled children’s charities. We also provide funds internationally to help the International Rotary goal to end worldwide polio, send equipment to disaster areas like Syria and Philippines and help other clubs abroad with the setting up of eye clinics in Tanzania.”

The club put on many events throughout the year, some for fundraising and others for a social event. These include a darts marathon competition, film nights, golf day, sleepwalk marshalling for annual walk, musical concert, Cuckfield village show, quiz night, street collections and much more!

“If you want to give something back and enjoy helping others, join us and make a world of difference.” said Barry.

This is the time of year when you’re likely to start to notice the presence of slugs and snails in your garden, greenhouse, coldframe, window box.... indeed just about everywhere. There are many different species; the most common in gardens are probably species of Milax (the keeled slugs) and Arion (e.g. the garden slug and the large black slug), plus the grey field slug (Deroceras reticulatus). The garden snail, Helix aspersa is generally the most troublesome but may also be joined by various species of the banded snail, Cepaea.

It also pays dividends if you grow varieties such as Pentland Dell, Wilja, Charlotte, Estima and Pentland Ivory all of which show a good degree of resistance to these slugs.

I also use the biological control nematode Phasmarhabdites hermaphrodita. True this may prove quite expensive but it works brilliantly against slugs, poses no environmental problems (it is a naturally occurring parasite of British slugs) and is perfect for controlling any slug that spends time underground. If you time the applications so that the crops, flowers or other plants are protected while they are at their most vulnerable, it shouldn’t be too much of an outlay.

If you create barriers around plants this can help, but I find it less reliable. My preferred materials are coco-shell (the mulching material), pine needles and crushed shells (e.g. oyster shell sold by poultry feed suppliers). But whatever you use do remember to put it in a complete circle around the base of the plant, not just a ring or the slugs may simply come up inside the ring and of course check it regularly, replenishing the material as necessary.

Easter Bakes Melt the chocolate in a bowl over simmering water.

Add the Shredded Wheat and remove from heat.

Stir well. Using a spoon separate the mixture into the cupcake cases and decorate with chocolate eggs.

Pop in fridge to set for a few minutes and enjoy!

Beat together the butter and caster sugar in a bowl until light and fluffy, gradually adding the egg and flour. Using your hands, knead the mixture into a stiff ball of dough and chill for thirty minutes.

Preheat oven (Gas 4, 180°C, fan 160°C). Dust work surface lightly with flour and roll dough to thickness of a £1 coin.

Use either an oval cutter or homemade cutter made from cardboard, to cut out Easter Egg shaped biscuits. Place on a baking tray and bake for 6-10 minutes, until golden brown.

Cool for five minutes and then decorate with icing sugar mixed with food colourings and hundreds and thousands.

Then leave to set or enjoy warm!

1 Ham hock 2 chicken breasts 250g peeled pistachios

For braising the meat 1 onion 3 cloves of garlic 1 carrot Half a leek 2 sticks of celery 1 sprig of thyme 250ml nice white wine Salt and pepper

Method

Firstly finely dice all the vegetables for the garnish and salt them heavily.

Take all the vegetables from the braising list, chop them and put in them in a large pot with the Ham hock, thyme, salt and pepper then pour in the wine and top up with water, simmer until tender. Then add the chicken breasts and simmer for another 15 minutes until the chicken is cooked.

Remove the meat and allow to cool. Keep the braising liquor! Pick the meat apart and discard any fat or bones, Taste it! If it needs it, add salt and pepper. Lay down four sheets of cling film on top of each other and roll up to form a sausage from the braised meat and set it in the fridge. Peel off the cling film and roll in chopped pistachios.

For the garnish Wash off all that salt from the garnish vegetables and soak them in fresh water for 10 min then rinse again. Take the saved liquid add a teaspoon of mustard, mix the vinegar and cornflour to make a paste add it to the liquid and bring to the boil. When your meat has set slice it into portions and present as shown.
