Hello everyone and welcome to our February issue!

The period after Chrismas is a busy time for everyone, getting the house back together after Christmas, taking down the decorations and clearing out the cupboards of any left-over festive goodies, not to mention finding space for all those presents!

I don’t know about you, but whenever I take my Christmas tree and decorations down, for a few weeks after the room seems somewhat bare, and it’s usually around the end of January I get the itch to decorate, or re-arrange my living space!

ENGaging TN22’s Dementia Sufferers and Carers

S

ince 2013, the TN22 Plus Club has been in operation; offering local residents with memory loss and dementia and their carers the opportunity to socialise and receive support.

This great group, which runs weekly from Hadlow Down Village Hall (alternate Wednesdays and Thursdays), between 10:30am and 3:30pm, is actively sponsored by the charity ENGage South East, who aim to encourage interaction with others in fun ways!

Each session is themed with games, crafts, singing, dancing and quizzes where members and volunteers share their memories of TV adverts, slogans and singers.

The Club is open to all in the Wealden community and as well as providing care, fun and stimulation for mild to moderate sufferers, the club also gives their carers a break for a few hours, along with on-hand help and support.

“Our members all suffer memory loss or mild to moderate dementia, and their carers can stay if they wish, but often they enjoy a day’s ‘respite’,” Roberta Smyth from the group, whose mother suffers from mild dementia, explains. “Sometimes the carer, who may be the members’ wife/daughter, stays for a cup of coffee and cake before the proceedings begin!”

“For me, the days when a member recognises me, when you see them smile at another member and help them with the bean bag throwing or they give you a hug at home-time and tells you that it was the best day and how much they love coming is priceless! My mother suffers from mild dementia and now attends the Wednesday club, to see her making apple crumble was something I never thought I would see again.”

“Come along for a taster session and meet the other members and volunteers and see how much you will enjoy yourself,” volunteer Roberta adds. “The welcome you will get is one of warmth and friendship.”

Conserving Maresfield for the Community

T

hree years ago, the residents of picturesque Maresfield were offered the opportunity to own an eight acre site Norman’s Pond, by East Sussex County Council – however, as the local conservation group were unable to take on the work needed, villagers got together to create Maresfield Village Meadows Trust (MVMT).

Since then, the group have been out in full force to promote conservation in Maresfield and the surrounding area and also to highlight recreational facilities, even becoming a charity in November 2014.

The Trust began working on the site, which consists of one acre of pond and six acres of ancient woodland, on 24th March 2014 and have successfully made the site safe after forty years of neglect, have received a grant of £5,000 from Wealden District Council for benches and footpath improvement and have seen dedicated volunteers spare 1,500 hours of their time.

This year, MVMT members are going to be busier than ever with planting, carrying out work on the pond and putting in benches for picnic areas, as Michael Clifton, the Trust’s chairman explained:

CONSERVATION GROUP “The above excludes the work on the woodland as that will take probably 10-15 years to get under control and provide safe walking areas for visitors,” the retired IT lawyer, who moved to the village three years ago said. “The intention is for as many paths, wild habitat and picnic areas as possible.”

“The site has considerable fauna in the form of deer, three forms of dragonfly, heron and a host of waterfowl and two sightings of Kingfisher have been made. There are a number of large sites of bluebells, wood anemone and we feel sure many others once the canopy has been reduced in areas.”

The TN Traveloguer: Ray Young

M

any of us like to share our travelling experiences with friends and families, through holiday photos and videos, but for one traveling TN resident, this hobby has seen him produce semi-professional travelogues for local organisations to enjoy!

Over the last ten years, Ray Young from Hurst Green has travelled far and wide, taking in countries such as China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Tunisia, South Africa, Egypt, Kenya, France, The USA, Peru, Argentina and Brazil, to name just a few. Recently, the seventy-seven year old, has taken his travel videos to local groups, including churches, those for senior citizens and W.I’s for members to watch and gain an insight into different cultures and ways of life.

“My work enabled me to travel to different continents with camera in hand. I have always enjoyed it. It broadens the mind to see how other people live, their surroundings, culture, language, cuisine…”

The experienced traveller has created fourteen DVDs, each lasting around thirty minutes, on average. Each travelogue is edited, with commentary from Ray, and supporting music.

“I create them myself using software with which I edit the pictures, add transitions, appropriate music, add digital photo sequences and voice-over informative commentary,” he explained. “I am an amateur but the results are quite professional.

Making More of Life Together: Uckfield’s Phab Club

T

here are lots of groups created for those with disabilities, as there are for those without. But, what about an organisation that brings together all abilities on equal terms?

Enter Uckfield’s Phab Club.

Phab was created in 1957 and hopes to create opportunities for all to meet and make friends, and to achieve complete inclusion within the wider community. In 2007, the Uckfield Phab Club started and now has over 100 members, however, there’s still room for more!

During fortnightly Saturday afternoon sessions at Uckfield Community Youth Centre, those aged nine and above enjoy arts and crafts activities, games, workshops and even have a go at becoming a DJ using the club’s very own DJ equipment!

This year, the club is looking forward to a very busy programme of events, with a wheelchair dancer and animal man (and special guest to pet!) visiting, along with workshops and an art and craft day in Hounslow organised. They are also busy planning their summer, Halloween and Christmas parties.

The Phab club recently received a £1,000 grant from Uckfield Town Council, which organiser Jackie Orr tells us the group hope to spend on sensory toys, a tent and art and craft materials.

“All are welcome to join us – those with disabilities along with non-disabled,” Jackie says. “Come along and make new friends and have fun!”

Pet Proofing Your Garden T

here’s always a lot to say about small pests such as greenfly, caterpillars, vine-weevil and so forth, but early in the year it’s some of the bigger ‘residents’ which can really drive you around the bend. I’m talking about cats and dogs. What can you do to ensure that you continue to garden happily, successfully and safely, despite the fact the garden is visited by cats and dogs… and without harming these lovely creatures either?

Next door’s cat or others in the neighbourhood are trickier to deal with as unfortunately they do tend to try and do their ‘toileting’ along the edges of their own territory, making your garden a prime target area.

If your cat or a neighbour’s cat is a problem, bear in mind that the more bare soil there is, the more likely that a cat will start to use it as its loo. Ground cover planting is essential and you could always use temporary annual flowers to fill in gaps between longer You may need to consider actively fencing off one part term planting. If you find that these too are scuffed of the garden for your dog, and trying to keep another up shortly after you have planted them, then the best thing to do is cover newly planted areas of bedding area completely dog free. Be your own interior designer Whether you’re planning a room from scratch or freshening up an existing scheme, it can be hard to know where to start.

C

reating a successful space involves a complex blend of practical and aesthetic considerations. As well as the nitty gritty of wiring and plumbing, there’s wallpaper, paint colours and fabric to select, window treatments to decide on, storage to incorporate, furniture to choose and finishing touches to arrange. How can you ensure that you do it correctly?

Never fear: it’s simply a question of taking things step by step, using a straightforward, logical approach. Careful planning is invaluable in helping firm up your ideas, work out your budget and timetable and, above all, avoid expensive mistakes.

First comes space planning. Measure your room accurately and draw a plan to scale on graph paper, marking in windows, doors, fireplaces, fitted cupboards, pipes, radiators, plug sockets, light fittings and so on. Consider the room’s size and shape, and its architectural style. Will they affect the way in which you decorate? Are there special considerations, such as lack of space or light, or an important original feature? At this stage, consider whether it would be helpful to move a wall, pipe or radiator, enlarge a window, hang the door the other way around or add extra plug sockets or light switches. Perhaps you can conceal wiring or pipework, or build in some extra storage? Once you have gone through all the options – consulting a structural engineer if your changes are major ones – you can draw up a final plan.

Next, plan the positions of major items of furniture.

On a separate sheet of graph paper, sketch the

approximate shapes of your furnishings, as if you were looking at them from above, using the same scale as your room plan. Then simply cut them out, place them on your master plan and assess how well they fit in to the space, ensuring that you allow enough activity room between and around them.

Think about who uses the room, when and how.

Move your ‘furniture’ around as necessary and, eventually, the optimum arrangement will become apparent.

To complement the floorplan and ensure that all the decorative elements of a room work together, professional designers create a ‘sample board’: a visual memo of all the different pieces that go towards making up the room.

Before you start, you’ll need to find some images of your proposed furniture, flooring, lighting and accessories, as well as swatches of fabric, wallpaper and paint. Try to keep the samples in proportion to the size they’ll be in real life. You can also include real items (or parts of them) such as tie-backs and trims, rope or timber. Your sample board can be highly representative or more of a suggestion of general colours and styles.

Then, take a large piece of neutral-coloured card as a base, and arrange the images or swatches on it. It helps if you place the samples roughly in accordance with where they will be in the room.

With all the ingredients together, you’ll have a really effective overview of how colours, patterns, shapes and textures work together and can assess the overall effect.

Combatting Half Term Boredom with Imaginative Afternoons As parents, we all know just how important it is to install imaginative and creative play into our child’s lives, with reports suggesting it not only improves social skills, but their understanding and expands their learning too. However with busy lives, this can sometimes be more difficult than it seems.

This half term, ban boredom (and turning to the TV) and instead, get creative – here’s a few ideas to get your imaginative afternoons started:

Get Arty Grab those paints and colouring crayons and let their creativity flow! Make pictures of family members, their favourite activity or go abstract with patterns and colour. To really unleash their imagination, use homemade potato prints or stencils, getting them to help out. After you’ve created your masterpieces, talk through them and let your child explain what they have made – they could just surprise you!

It’s Showtime!

Children love putting on a performance! Encourage them to host their own show with acting, singing, dancing or even magic tricks, turning your living room into their very own theatre. Role play, such as this, lets a child get into character and is a key part of developing their knowledge, allowing them to put themselves in someone else’s shoes and learn through imaginative play.

Make Something Out Of Nothing Go on an adventure through your home to find things you no longer use, or perhaps are throwing out. Whether it’s old mismatching socks, tired t-shirts or even empty toilet rolls, challenge your child to make something out of these items, with a little help from your sewing box and the arts and crafts cupboard! Ask them to tell you about their creation; what’s their name? Where do they live?

What do they eat? This activity is guaranteed to be a great way of spending a few imaginative hours.

Special Effects Story Time Children of all ages enjoy a story, especially when it’s read-out with expression! Bring their favourite books to life by getting into character, or better still; if your child can read – get them to voice the story. To make story time last longer, incorporate toys for extra creative role play. We’re sure you’ll enjoy it just as much as them!

We’re looking for at least two new staff to join our ambitious team here in Rowfant, and we’re happy to hire four if the right people apply.

We’re currently on the lookout for some writers on the ground in the areas we distribute our magazines in.

What sort of people should apply for this role?

Simple really – people people.

If you’re comfortable talking to clients and prospects on the telephone, confident in your ability to build new relationships and strengthen existing ones and excited about the prospect of joining a busy team and contributing ideas towards the growth of the business, then this is the role for you.

The ideal candidate will probably have some experience in print media, but we’ll consider every CV that catches our eye.

What can we offer you in return for your services? LOTS! For a start, we’re big on flexible hours!

We like our staff to work at least 20 hours a week, but if you’ve got to take the kids to school and pick them up, then this job is still very much within your grasp.

(In fact, some of our most successful advertising execs are part-time mums).

Secondly, as long as you work the 20 hours per week, you’ll get five weeks of paid holiday. We like our staff to rest and relax and recharge their batteries, so there won’t be any moaning from us when you take your holiday.

As you’d expect, on top of your basic salary we offer a generous un-capped commission scheme with this role. For the right person with the right motivation, this is the perfect reward for hard work.

As our magazine revolves around high quality content, it’s vital that what we produce hits the spot with our target market, and that’s what you’d be tasked with delivering.

Right now we’re especially interested in writers with local knowledge of Haywards Heath, Reigate and Uckfield, but we’re always on the lookout for writers throughout Surrey and West Sussex, so if that’s you, get in touch!

You’ll need to have a keen interest in your local community and great people skills, as you’ll be liaising with community groups and uncovering stories for the magazine, but above all else, you need to be able to write!

The right person for this role would be a high-calibre writer who’s able to work independently, organise their own time and work to strict deadlines, and it’s a fabulous opportunity for the right person to increase their experience and make a living doing what they love.

How will you attract more For a small business, making the most of your advertising With 10 years of publishing experience, Matthew Arnold, Managing Director of TN Uncovered, has worked with local businesses of all shapes and sizes.

Here he shares his top tips on how to decide where to advertise your business...

We don’t want you to make a snap decision on advertising with us. Why? Because we care.

For most businesses, advertising in TN Uncovered would be a really smart thing to do, but we’re not going to pretend that it is for every single business.

When deciding how to spend your advertising budget, it’s crucial you consider the three M’s: 1) Who’s your market?

Who is your product or service aimed at?

2) What’s your message?

Once you’ve defined who you want to do business with, you need to understand what you want to SAY to them. What’s your message? You’ll want to communicate who you are and what you do, but it can also be beneficial to communicate why you do what you do too.

3) What’s the best media for your message and market?

Once you’ve got your market and message sorted, then and only then should you be thinking about the media you use to target the right people with your message.

Think about where your target market hang out and what sorts of media they consume; and choose a media that is most likely to get your message in front of them.

Typically we find that the media we offer – our community magazines and websites – is perfect for a large percentage of businesses – that is why we retain over 85%* of all customers each month, and an impressive 93%* of our customers when seasonal adverts are accounted for; but we understand that advertising with us is not for everyone. Once you’ve decided that a magazine is the medium for you, the next question is: what do you need to be looking out for when choosing a magazine to advertise in?

1) How is it distributed?

Trust us, this bit’s important. Lots of community magazines are “distributed” via Pick up Points; in other words, the magazines are all left in a particular place for the public to pick up when they pass it.

Alternatively, the magazine will be delivered door to door; which in our view is far more effective.

Pick up Points rely on a lot of luck to get your message into the hand of your prospects; door to door delivery leaves nothing to chance.

2) What’s in the magazine?

Naturally, magazine content varies; and it’s important to ensure that the magazine you’re advertising in contains content that resonates with your target customer. If it doesn’t, then the chances of it getting the regular readership you need to make your adverts work are greatly diminished.

3) How confident are you in the publisher?

Let’s break this down. You’re paying the publisher money to do a good job for you and understandably, you’ll be really keen to make sure you’re handing your money over to a reputable business.

When you’re looking for a publisher to advertise with, we recommend doing your research.

• Do they have good testimonials?

• Are they approved by Trading Standards?

The more time you put in, the more likely it is you’ll get the right publisher for you.

4) How do you know the magazine actually gets there?

We don’t want to scaremonger; but the fact of the matter is that there are some magazines that will take your money and not deliver your advertisement. They might not even print the magazine. To combat that risk, it’s a good idea to get proof of print and distribution; so that you can be sure your advert has actually landed.

5) Know your numbers Cost is vital – you need to know how many people will see your advert, and work out the cost per thousand. Some magazines may seem very cheap; but when you break down how many people actually see the ad, you’re paying peanuts and getting monkeys (and not of the financial kind!)

Family Values A

s a rule I try not to take too much notice of what I see and read on the internet, but recently I saw something that caught my eye.

It was a sign that read: When you use a local or family business, you aren’t helping a chairman buy their third holiday home. You’re helping a little girl get ballet lessons, a little boy get his first pair of football boots, a student to pay uni fees or a mum and dad to put food on the table. Understandably, this struck a chord with me.

Morley Auto Services is this year celebrating fifty years of being family run and, well, being the third generation of Morley to be involved in the business, I’m actually very proud. Especially given the way the world seems to be these days, with large companies seemingly swallowing up towns and villages, not to mention the impact of online shopping.

In 1988, the business had outgrown the Oakdene road site and we moved to Linkfield Street, where we remain today. I can say we at this point, because a 7 year old me was there to help with the move. I was already showing a keen interest in cars and spent most Saturdays helping out/getting in the way.

So being a family run company, especially one that has stood the test of time, is something to be proud of and actually, something we should all do more to support.

Whether it’s a local garage, butchers, greengrocers or chemist, all of them need the support of customers in order to carry on.

Granted they probably can’t match the price of the large chains that exist, but more often than not you’ll get better, and more personal, customer service at the smaller firm, the employees won’t be on a bonus and so won’t be trying to save money or cut corners where possible and maybe, just maybe, you’ll get a warm feeling of satisfaction that you’re not putting money into a massive pot that makes the rich at the top of a big firm, even richer.

A bit of steak will be cheaper at a supermarket, but it won’t be as good as the bit butchered in front of you and handed over with some advice on how to get the best results from cooking it, advice that comes from years of experience, not an online training course.

He traded alone from Oakdene Road in Redhill until my dad, Ian Morley, reached school leaving age and decided to follow in my Grandad’s footsteps. My dad served his apprenticeship at Reigate Garage before eventually joining my Grandad in the family business in 1972.

In 1999 my Grandad retired and handed over the reins to my father. It was at this point, two years into my apprenticeship at East Surrey College, that I then joined the company full time.

It is a story that my father and I are immensely proud of. It is also a story that surely must make Morley Auto Services amongst the longest-established family businesses in the Redhill/Reigate area. We are very grateful to each of our customers, past and present, that have been part of our half-century journey. It’s not been easy, but we’re still here, doing what we can to buy my daughter her ballet lessons and my son his football lessons.

So, whether it’s us, another local garage, a butcher’s, a garden centre, or whatever; support the little guys where you can. Once upon a time the local high street was made up by them, now they are a rare sight indeed, and getting rarer. Which, if you ask me, is a real shame.
