2013|MASTERPLAN CARTIERA BINDA Waterways and industrial archeology
Location:
Vaprio d’Adda
Type:
Masterplan

Manuele Mossoni
Waterways and territorial patterns, because of their inherent nature and the historical legacy that represent their constituent material and as a legacy of the human landscapes, they are often largely interwoven and superimposed on the industrial archeology, where this term (now refers to a specific and recognized although young discipline) is meant the historical and architectural heritage consists of the building complexes that have characterized the origin of the industrial production, along with artifacts contemporary infrastructure spread over the territory. Very often, in fact, have been precisely the “waterway”, in the form of channels made for the purpose, both natural waterways or channeled bent to the specific use, to form the infrastructure support necessary for the development. The intervention for the former Cartiera Binda fits into broader strategic framework and has the objective to become a reference node, becoming part as a “strategic plan” in accordance with the guidelines of the PTCP that organize the territory into a polycentric system. The masterplan, to carry out this role, provides a mix of uses (residential, commercial, hotel, entertainment, service center, research center, offices and start-up) that can integrate higher-level services. The masterplan provides for the maintenance of all the historical buildings that make up the nucleus of the paper mill and the demolition of all buildings newer with poor quality and difficult architectural capabilities for new functions.

Social InstantHouse is the design of small structures at the local level, the objective of which is to communicate through a network of services, living spaces around the parks, making them the largest public space around which connect the different parts the city of Milan. A network of services along the system of waterways from the proposed project EXPO 2015 is thus the central theme of the proposal of the competition. The proposal involves the construction of a multifunctional gathering space within the parks and the network of waterways scheduled for EXPO 2015. The project is generated by the union of elements developed from a few keywords. The context is the environment in which the project relates fake through a network of services and infrastructure at the urban scale. Hence the idea of a social club that is primarily an open and flexible. A space of passage that knows how to be a shell of different cultures and able to contaminate each other. In it converge the two ideas gained from several years of confrontation with this territory: the first, aimed at the future, is nothing but the realization of what Milan will be in the coming years: a town called to lead in experimenting with projects related to green to a new culture of food in a landscape increasingly globalized done by nine billion people. The second one is the soul of the city, apparently slower in the great process of transformation, but made up of a multitude of individual energies. That’s why we believe it is necessary that all projects do not suffer from discontinuities, and are therefore always connected by small and dynamic public spaces in which each micro reality to assert itself in a much broader vision for the future. The theme of the permeability is strongly connected to the place where the building will be placed. We wanted to create an intimate space, sheltered and very well defined in a park, a space in which the first piece of furniture was just the surroundings visible from any point. It has been thought for this reason such a structure that came out from the ground to develop as a small hill of wood. At this point the definition of internal spaces suggested which parts of the cover make it opaque and which to keep completely open to the voices and scents of green. The study of form begins with the considerations just mentioned. But how to transfer these ideas to a project, making it clearly the great ability and experience of the Italian industry in woodworking? And above all, how to combine this technical capability with the concepts of environmental sustainability and energy? These are the questions asked to move from a product concept to its feasibility.

Concept The design choices conform to the basic objectives of the competition rules, and of course, the qualities, characteristics, value and memory of the historic building, interpreting the values (and searching for its full valorisation) in the renewed urban layout of intervention area , especially in the contemporary social context. The Vigorelli is an important part of sports history of Milan, even those who, like the writer, are still relatively young, reminiscent of the mythical “six days,” business Maspes and Gonzato (to name only the most famous), a sporting history almost mythical, to be recovered, and which therefore requires the restoration of the building as well as a symbol and memory (ie, in the etymological meaning of “moneo et memento”). A few other buildings dedicated to cycling can claim the history of the Vigorelli, among them the “Vel d’Hiv ‘in Paris, infamous for the Holocaust, but also the Velodrome Umberto 1 ° in Turin, built in the late nineteenth, early immediately used as Motovelodromo for performances of the emerging motorcycle industry, and then to stadium. The refunctionalization of the plants is composed as support structures of the following sports: 1. banked track for cycling in speed; 2. Alpinism and free climbing 3. Rowing, canoeing, surfing, water skiing. 4. Football 5. Cross-country skiing 6. Running 7. Horse shows The roof rests on four major pillars reticular, placed at the edge of the parterre, and then that does not obstruct the view, these four girders four meters high covering the entire light and allow you to easily fixed cover of semicircles and a first section straight of ten meters, leaving instead a sliding cover for the area of the parterre. The bike uses a hub placed next to the entrance of the runway from the outside, so as to allow also the entrance, possibly with your own bike, and includes commercial premises and exposure, bike rental, the possibility of using a projection room for 100 seats, locker room facilities, a point of reference for associations. The area of the mountain is the one who asks the most spectacular transformation: the hemicycle northeast (such as walls more challenging) is excavated up to an altitude of -15.00, safe from the depth of the water, and shaped so that the according to the runway at a height of 0.00 can be used for practical tests of mountain skiing with varying degrees of difficulty. From the base to the height of the cover three walls are made of twenty-five meters high, artificial rock, served by two lifts and two staircases for the return (or the escape route!) And access to the locker room, which is done by a path at an altitude of -3.50 meters that already exists.

2011|MASTERPLAN AREA SEGRATE-LINATE Guideline and strategic Masterplan
Location: Linate/Segrate
Type: Masterplan

Manuele Mossoni
Milan multi-core Milan is becoming increasingly a city region inside the Lombardy area. The edge city are becoming important for the future of the area and promises a division of the central role of Milan in many nuclei located in the current edge city. The project leads to the enhancement and development of strong identities already on the site. For years these areas have hosted large industrial areas and dormitory. The ongoing researc for the industria period for low-cost areas near the city to set up industries and residential areas, has encouraged the phenomenon of commuting. The large pool of workers in Milan led and still leads to a substantial movement in the city, in the morning and evening with the return to the satellite city. The creation of these cities ‘secondary’ has been without a general plan for this phenomenon, the actions they were not included in a common strategy but fulfills the needs of the moment without thinking of the consequences. This phenomenon has resulted in large housing estates with no services and aggregation systems, and creating environments associali anonymous. After the period of the industrial border city have had a period of uncertainty for their future and their function. In recent years, these cities Milanese hinterland had a rapid expansion and transformation that has led to bring a real city region. The more social conception and architecture from the government has allowed more rational to deal with the serious problem of satellite towns. For these areas promises a future less dependent on the central city and its identity and creating an incentive or character of the place. The development has been facilitated by the presence of important infrastructure in the area that allowed him a perfect link to all of Italy and the whole of southern Europe. This large urban region is well served by three major airports (Malpensa, Linate and Orio al Serio), precisely this infrastructure that puts the economic area as the epicenter for Italy. Segrate: A STRATEGIC AREA The area of Segrate - Linate is strategic due to itsproximity to major freeways that allow links in the east - west and the south branch of the highways. All these features make this the prospect of Milan as the main hub for the whole Italian mobility to Europe. In the retail area and Linate Segrate represent the entrance to the area of Milan. The presence of Linate airport and motorways, make it the gate of Milan for the entire area east of northern Italy. The transformation of old industrial areas and conversion of part of the railway will create new services to be appreciative of the area thanks to its natural resources unused. This area is important and strategic for the goods transported by train, there is a considerable area of interchange freight truck to truck and rail to truck. These specific services are important strengths that are maintained in the design of the masterplan. The area of Linate Segrate and in the past has been an important industrial center for its proximity to major transportation routes and proximity to the center of Milan.

Concept The Civic Center is located in a strategic location within an ideal environment such as the Park of the Library of the Trees. This condition reinforces the crucial role between the Isola area, increasing towards dialogue and exchange. Since its structure is defined as a privileged observatory developed through a pedestrian ramp which wraps up to the first floor: an architectural promenade which becomes extension of the interior spaces and roof garden. The Centre is therefore designed to offer community services and open for intercultural relationships, wellorganized, attractive and seductive. Its structure, material and spatial composition, are the first elements capable of activating positive dynamics and establish relationships. This gene, together with the ability to develop work, will make this building an open source. OPEN SOURCE is then understood as a free element, implemented by the users with their own experience, enhanced by the relationships that can promote enhanced by the functional and spatial flexibility, optimized by the continuity and simplicity of the space.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CITY AND CAMPUS The campus is completely incorporated in the structure of the city, the expansion of the city has fully integrated the campus. Currently there is no clear distinction between campus and town, this makes it difficult to identify from other campus functions. Although it is architecturally integrated into the city the campus is unrelated on the social aspect. COMPOSITION OF THE ELEMENT The history of the campus construction has led to the creation of different faculties that are assembled next to each other. The creation in different time did not allow a global project to all the faculties that would guarantee an interconnection between them. RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN FACULTY The heterogeneity of the system at the city campus studies led to a physical and social fragmentation. The faculty inside this system work as closed entities, there are no interchanges between faculty ,the faculty does’t have a common denominator that unites in one large campus. The situation of urban campus led to search new space not always near. This situation has led to a fragmentated situation. The project wants to create a new structure inside the existing paths to create a new aggregation axis. The size of the campus and the lack of shared spaces between the faculty has led to a nfragmentated society. The strategy of the project includes the conversion and creation of spaces for studying, concentration and free time. Currently, the campus works as a closed entity inside the city, even during the day while being open complete not contain functions that can be used from outside. The creation of a social infrastructure connecting the city to thecampus through the new features available for all city users. The campus currently using the space available in a traditional way, there are many unused spaces (roofs, gardens, the back of buildings) with a few changes it’s possible to offer new areas and functions. The project intends to identify those areas and allow modification and propose reuse. Currently the area of the campus is almost indistinguishable from the city. The aims of the project is to increase recognizability from outside and from inside the campus. The strategy provides a system of signs on the ground indicating the main activities and functions of the campus, including those reachable from outside.

Concept Emphasize the brand Alto Adige as peak of the iceberg, starting with the the seven virtues capital of the territory of South Tyrol, and focusing on compelling ideas for different categories of visitors. From this general definition derive three specific objectives: 1) convey an image of Alto Adige astonishing and effective; 2) use the Expo to make contacts of excellence; 3) give more visibility and resonance to the reputation already acquired. The project idea has as objective to attract visitors into the pavilion through elements that lead back to their own forms of Trentino Alto Adige. Through an architectural reinterpretation of the 7 thematic strands interweaving with the peculiarities typical of the region it was decided to transfer these elements of identity in an exhibition model highly recognizable. The mountains, rivers, forests, orchards, lakes are reinterpreted to compose a recognizable space that is able to accommodate and represent a glimpse of the region, catapulting the viewer within its particularities, incuriosendolo and inviting them to experience a direct. Welcome desk At the entrance of the pavilion, visitors will welcomed by a characteristic welcome desk consists of wood panels parallel juxtaposed create a sinuous game of shapes reminiscent of the typical Trentino mountains. This point of departure for the exhibition will host the patner that are taking place daily during Expo 2015 From the desk patner will get in touch with your visitors and display their products. Exhibition Area From the welcome desk, visitors will be invited to participate in a course interrattivo to discover the products, landscapes, people, architecture, sustainability, technology and alpine everyday culture typical of Trentino Alto Adige. The modules that make up the interactive display system resume the materials and the forms determined from the concept, parallelepipeds composed of more blades of wood juxtaposed in parallel. The exhibition modules are divided into 3 categories: modules with interactive panels with which the visitor can interact through touch screens and find information with an active participation, forms with information panels with infographics printed plexiglass backlit modules for the display where the user can be discovered with tactile, visual and olfactory characteristics of special local products. The whole system is distinguishing trait with high flexibility of movement to meet the needs of the exhibition patner premium, at any time, the modules can be relocated or reduced / increased in number, the modules have been designed with different heights to allow children and disabled people to enjoy the show. Media space The area audio / video allows you to further immerse the visitor in this virtual tour of the region, through video and audio playback the viewer / visitor will be welcomed in an area with seating and large touch screens. Vertical display system In support of the main display system located in the central area has been designed a system of infographics backlit inside of the wooden slats located in the rear wall. This part of the exposure may be un’allestimento permanent for a good part of the event. The visatotore will be intrigued to see the system information contained within the same structure of the pavilion, approaching can learn about the region retracing 7 themes proposed in the notice. You will be able to explore one of the issues even when it is not present within the main exposure. The structure may also be used to create a display system to show suspension for items and products from another point of view, or with horizontal supports will have the option to use the structure as a wall display.

CONCEPT The theme of the project for the Pavilion of Expo 2015 Milan City can be understood as an anticipation of the contents and objectives of the event to come. In other words, it can not be limited to the description for the visitors of how it is progressing the construction site of the event, but also to document everything that is happening “ around the event,” that is being prepared , which is being organized , thus sharing the objectives , as then it will be done at the site and time of the event. Already in the description of the call , but mostly by reading the text on the theme , the role of information only fades faced with the task of involving the public the objectives and tasks of the same event in the highest way ; task that covers a vast span of purposes , of which the Pavilion Competition is an ideal platform , and which identifies the high complexity , which tends to further articulate the functions provided . And ‘then a place to share and present strategies to combine production with energy conservation, use of renewable resources, the protection of natural resources, in order to anticipate a discussion on the research referred Milan Expo 2015 will be the test: a platform and a task asking to represent what is being done in this direction, a meeting place even before Expo (for a year and a half) to check what is being done in this direction Project The project thus lives of contradictory tensions in the first instance, because it must be of great communicative power, but must also fit in a respectful and modest in a monumental. Maybe an object still too cumbersome for the place in which it is entered: meets these objectives with a simple geometry, transparent and modern at the same time “classic” for the repeated symmetry on the vertical and horizontal planes. The repetition of identical modules tends to eliminate architectural significance, in favor of a “dimension” abstract image transparent and communicative as reflected in the monumental fronts.
