PARQUE MINHOCAO

Current state: the Minhocão is the name that people gave to the elevated street “President Artur da Costa e Silva”, in the city of São Paulo, in Brasil. This unique urban reality consists of an infrastructure with a double function and life: a vehicular artery during the working week and a space for strolling and leisure on weekends and holidays. The area is characterized by strong degradation, serious social problems, environmental and noise pollution. Design features: the project involves the redevelopment of the highline and the conversion into a linear park. Thus Minhocão park will be a link with many polarities that will form widespread multifunctional structure. The complex of Minhocão consists of 5 macro-areas with different functions: exhibition area, sports area, theatrical area, craft area and artistic area. Moreover, the theatrical area contains the design study of a theatrical complex. Final thesis project year 2019-20

PAGE 3

The redevelopment of Minhocão also includes a transformation of two squares and a new range of green spaces in the centre of San Paulo.

MINHOCAO THEATRE

Current state: The project area is in Brazil, in the central area of Sao Paulo. It is part of a large conversion of the Minhocao elevated road into a linear park. Design features: The building, which is the main polarity of the theatrical area (with the various polarities and the Minhocao), constitute a widespread structured complex. The project consists of a bridge building which is located above the Minhocao and includes it as an extension of the building itself. The theatre consists of open but covered spaces and many bridges that distinguish the project. This type of space has great importance in the building and is used to include the project in the surrounding area and characterize itself. Final thesis project year 2019-20

The theatre complex consists of 5 rooms. Each theatre room is different in dimentions, function and space.

ST LORENZO THEATRE

Current state: The project area is San Lorenzo in the east area of Rome, close to the Aurelian Walls. San Lorenzo is part of the Tiburtino district and takes its name from the Basilica of San Lorenzo, just outside the walls. It is located near Via Tiburtina, “La Sapienza” University and the Verano cemetery. The area is characterized by strong degradation, with the presence of slums, and large enclosures in masonry that are the source of the inaccessibility problem. Design features: The project involves redevelopment of the lot with the addition of a theatre divided into different multi-functional areas. The project focuses on the permeability and usability of the lot, with the intent to allow the theatre to be crossed in various locations, without entering into the building. The permeability is also an important characteristic for the nature that creeps into the building. The project has a permeable brise soleil that encloses the complex, while inside the enclosure the building is characterized by an irregular shape.

PAGE 13

The theatre complex consists of 3 macro-areas: the theatrical area, the support area and the accommodation area that uses the height difference of the lot to be elevated when compared to the square.

LAKE PAOLA HOUSE

Current state: Project of a single-family home on the shore of Lake Paola in Sabaudia. The constraints imposed by the client were related to the maintenance of two trees placed at a height difference of 2.20 m. Another requirement was the necessity of integrating the house with a studio that has an independent entrance from the rest of the house. The most important aspects of the lot are the view of the lake and the view of the “Circeo”.

Architectural project year 2013-14

PAGE 19

Design features: The project is characterized by a composition that tries to combine pure form without giving up the irregular space. The house project includes multiple and different views from the inside to the outside, and vice versa. The house is designed not to obstruct the privileged view of the lake. To do this, the composition is structured in a simple casing with open surfaces in the main direction (entrance-lake) and a glass box that is positioned inside. The gap between the glass box and the casing is characterized by an open but covered space that mediates the passage between the interior and exterior of the house. The architecture is also characterized by a ramp that connects the two different altitudes in the main direction, offering a view of the lake at all times. Particular attention was paid to the research of an almost “panistic” fusion between the architectural element and the lake, like in the visual continuity between the water on the roof and that of the lake.

SOMMATI PROJECT

Current state: The district of Sommati is located a few kilometers away from the town of Amatrice. It belongs to the Rieti province, in the Lazio region. Amatrice and Sommati were severely destroyed by an earthquake on 25 August 2016 and its successive aftershocks. My initiative is therefore to propose a reconstruction of the village of Sommati. Design features: The project is characterized by a strong respect of the pre-existing positions and the character of the houses, without giving up a modern and innovative technical and architectural improvement. An important feature of the project is to guarantee its sustainability. The general urban layout is redesigned to remark the main avenue, which is wider at the extremities, representative of the main polarities of the project. This aspect is designed to give the path a beginning and an end.

The base built up area was designed in order to build a group of houses characterized by a double function - residential and commercial. This was done to guarantee a social and commercial activity for the main pathway.

FLAMINIO PROJECT

Current state: The Flaminio district of Rome is located in the north of the city, near the Aurelian Walls, between Via Flaminia, from which it is named after, and the left side of Tevere river. Design features: The project involves the redevelopment of a former industrial area. The objectives in the structuring of the project are usability and permeability for public use, to resolve the current situation that sees a large enclosure characterizing the area. In doing so, however, I have distinguished areas of different functions that welcome situations of great, average and low affluence. For this reason, the presence of a basement that mitigates the passage from an area of medium-high to low affluence is needed. This also leads to the creation of a private residential area, guaranteeing the complete usability of the lot.

Architectural project year 2016-17

PAGE 31

The main routes of the district were used to recreate a trident plant, which is linked to the Museum of Arts of the XXI century, the MAXXI, and also to allow the project to be included in the context. The project involves the collocation of residential and commercial functions and the inclusion of a science museum. The residential function aspect of the urban project is designed in depth, in particular for its linear buildings.

LINEAR DWELLINGS

Current state: The linear building I examined in depth belongs to the redevelopment project of an area in the Flaminio district, situated in the north of Rome. Design features: The project is developed according to the design of a basic block that is repeated throughout the elevation of the building. The section represents the layout that generates the whole project: everything depends on its scheme. Its quality is the aim to guarantee that every dwelling has a wide roof-garden terrace and that each macro-area of the house - like the sleeping area, the living area and the terrace - has a double view on the two opposite sides of the building.

Architectural project year 2016-17

PAGE 35

The structure is made up of an alternating rhythm where both the structural walls and the stairwells repeat in sequence. Two dwellings and a single stairwell generate a basic macro-block that composes the whole plan in a modular way. However, this strict structural cadence gets interrupted by variations which characterize the elevation.

MARSEILLE PROJECT

Current state: This project is based on a design competition that establishes the quantity for the residential and commercial functions and proposes the insertion of a public space and a theatre. The quantities that the competition demands for the project are excessive compared to the dimensional characteristics of the lot. Design features: The main aim of the project is to recreate a “space of contact”, which is a typical medieval space of an old Italian village, where the house adapts its structure to the characteristics of the lot. The dwellings are connected by an external path where each apartment has its own entrance. The path creates a game of lights and shadows in the main avenue that crosses the all lot. Architectural project year 2016-17

PAGE 39

The theatre is under the principal square and is characterized by two opposite stalls and a central stage to guarantee flexibility of the space.
