Mayhem es una banda de black metal noruego considerada por muchos como una de las precursoras bandas de black metal y de mayor influencia en la escena. Nacida en Oslo, Noruega, Mayhem se formó en el año 1984 con el guitarrista Øystein “Euronymous” Aarseth, el baterista Kjetil Manheim y el bajista Jorn "Necrobutcher" Stubberud quienes fueron los primeros en originar el caracteristico sonido sucio, oscuro y rapido de Mayhem. Unos de los mejores ejemplos asi como las mejores producciones de la banda son los EP’s “Pure Fucking Armagedon” de 1986 y “Deathcrush” donde expone uno de los primeros sonidos existentes del genero.
Despues de “Deathcrush” se integra a la banda Per Yngve “Dead” Ohlin como nuevo frontman de la banda. Dead fue para Mayhem una pieza clave en el posterior desarrollo de la banda tanto musicalmente como esteticamente ya que el gran interes de Dead por la musica lo llevaria a escribir canciones que luego serian los exitos mas grandes de la banda tales como“Freezing Moon”, “Funeral Fog” “Life Eternal” y “Buried By Time And Dust”. “Dawn Of The Black Hearts” es un Bootleg semioficial de la banda publicado por Mauricio “Bullmetal” Montoya en Colombia quien era dueño de Warmaster Records y que a su vez era un amigo de correspondencia de Euroymous y de Dead. Fue grabado en vivo en un concierto en Sarpsborg, Noruega el 28 de Febrero de 1990, pero el album fue publicado el 17 de Febrero de 1995 luego del suicidio de Dead en 1991. La portada original de este album es una fotografía de el cadáver de Dead tomada por Euronymous luego de que se suicidara de un disparo de rifle en la frente. A pesar de no ser un album totalmente oficial, ha sido recibido por la critica como una de las piezas maestras del black metal.
