Simply put, a domain name is a label attached to an IP (Internet Protocol) address. Domain names were created to make it easier for visitors to access your website. Every domain name is made up of at least two parts: 1. the actual domain name (which is typically your brand name) 2. and the domain name extension. A domain extension comes at the end of the domain name. Common examples are: • .com • .nz • .co.nz • .net • .org • etc. When a user types a domain name into their web browser, the browser sends a request to a network of interconnected servers known as the Domain Name System. These servers will look up the Domain Name Servers (DNS) associated with your particular domain name and forward the request to those name servers.
ISSUE 37 2 : BIZ WAIKATO
How Do I Register A Domain Name? • Before you can use a domain name with your website, you will need to first register it with an ICANN-accredited domain registrar. • ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) is a USA based non-profit organization established in 1998 to help keep the web safe by developing and enforcing policy on the Internet’s IP Addresses and domain names. ICANN does not run the system, but serves in an administrative role. • If your customer base or site traffic is mostly from New Zealand, you are best using .co.nz or other Country Code Top-Level Domains (ccTLDs) that clearly indicate you are a New Zealand company. • A domain name can be registered from one year to ten years. • When registering a domain name, the registrar will require certain information from you. • This information is placed in what is known as a WHOIS database. How Does A Domain Differ From Web Hosting? Web hosting is the computer server where your website content is stored.
The DNS will forward the request to the web server where your website is stored.
While hosting and domain names are separate services, you need both of them to create a website.
The web server will then fetch the required pages and return them to your browser.
You need a domain name to direct visitors to your website and web hosting to store the files that make up your website.
This process takes a very short time to happen if you are hosting with a reliable company and follow the accepted best practices of website design.

Hamilton CBD Update
Vanessa Williams, General Manager, Hamilton Central Business Association
April had some fantastic activation highlights including the inaugural Feast Waikato with the CBD playing host to high demand sold out events and the CBD’s first Pavement Pop-up market day which created a fun retail vibe for the city. The Brave Hearts container exhibition in Garden Place has now come to end but was enjoyed by nearly 3,000 people. This was a fantastic collaboration with the Hamilton Central Business Association, NZ School of Tourism and Wintec. The NZ School of Tourism had the responsibility of rostering students every day to show visitors excellent customer service and guide people through the exhibition. Wintec Nursing School students were responsible for taking school groups through the exhibit and demonstrating activities for the heart and lungs as part of their nursing training. This month we have welcomed back Neat Places who are visiting new ‘neat’ places in the CBD for production of the third Hamilton Neat Places map due at the end of May. We have also welcomed the Ambassador Programme developers from the Queenstown Resort college who are creating the content for the first Ambassador Programme Hamilton. Techweek 19 in the CBD 20-26th May and Embassy Park will be showing Giant Papier Mache Boulder on 30th May. The CBD is alive with activity and enquiry from a raft of businesses, investors and developers all looking to activate various ideas which will add to the fabric and underpin the momentum we already have in and around the CBD.

MOVERS AND SHAKERS Waikato Artist Wins Fieldays No.8 Wire Art Award Hamilton artist Gaye Jurisich [pictured] has taken out top honours in the 2019 Fieldays No.8 Wire National Art Award with her captivating piece labelled Snare. The Fieldays No.8 Wire National Art Awards are hosted and coordinated by Waikato Museum, partnered by Farmlands cooperative and supported by the New Zealand National Fieldays Society. Judge Linda Tyler praised Gaye’s piece of art for using the space effectively, “Often with sculpture, people think that it’s fine to have something wall mounted. The whole attraction of that piece was the fact that it was sprouting out of the walls and using the floors as well, so it was a real installation”.
“Gaye’s sculpture really captured the energy of the material well. No8 wire is really strong stuff, and when it’s coiled it’s got all that springing energy. It really did express the quality and energy that’s inherent in No8 wire,” says Tyler. Snare was one of 25 artworks created by 23 artists on display at ArtsPost Galleries & Shop in a fine display of creations showcasing the value, versatility and symbolism of No.8 wire through the creation of artworks made from this icon of Kiwi agriculture.

The Sir Richard Hadlee Interview It is with great pleasure Biz Waikato interviewed the greatest cricket player of all time: Sir Richard Hadlee. Sir Donald Bradman, Dad’s advice, underarm bowl, bowling over 100,000 cricket balls, which cricketer has the greatest sense of humour, golf, hip and knee replacements, Charlie Chaplin, his motto in life, the ‘Forty-Niners’, Rob Muldoon; it’s all here and more, so read on and enjoy. At the end of the interview, Sir Richard has a special message for Biz Waikato Readers:
Q1
Then do it all again the next day. Over the years I bowled over 100,000 cricket balls at a competitive level – no wonder I needed a right hip and left knee replacement later in life!!
Since I was a youngster I have always bowled the ball right handed. In the very early days I must have picked up the bat and batted left handed (not that I knew that at the time).
And, were you self-driven and taught in fitness aspects?
How did it come to pass that you bowled right-handed, but batted left?
If Dad thought it was wrong he would have changed me to become another right handed batsman. I think he was quite happy for me to do it left handed as all my brothers (4 of them) batted right handed. I was a bit different!
Q2
Do you still live in Christchurch?
I was born and raised in Christchurch – I lived in Christchurch for 59 years but for the last 8 years we have lived at Pegasus about 25 klms north of Christchurch (on a golf course). I enjoy my golf.
Q3
You are well known for being the fittest cricket player in the world – was fitness always a key part of your sporting career at a very early age? As a younger I spent a lot of time bowling and batting in the back yard. General fitness was not an issue as kids are generally fit and like to run around the place and I played a lot of sports at school. As I started to make provincial and international cricket teams, fitness levels had to go to another level. Whilst I did a lot of bowling in the nets there was always the hard yards to do relating to fitness off the field of play – running for miles, sprint work, stretching exercises so the body was supple. Bowling a cricket ball was about rhythm, timing and co-ordination – I needed to get my body in the perfect position when releasing the ball at delivery. I needed to be efficient and skilful and that took plenty of practice. I had to be fit enough to start the day well by bowling a few overs with the new ball, come back before lunch to bowl a few more overs, bowl a few overs after lunch and still be fit enough to bowl 4/5 at the end the day as well as I had started the day.
I was self-driven to be the best I could be. After a mediocre start to my test career I knew I had to work harder, prepare better and be ready to give myself a better chance of performing and being successful. To do that I needed to be fitter and stronger, have a more efficient bowling technique, be mentally stronger, set goals and do my job (get wickets, make life for the batsman to be unpleasant and have a presence on the field of play so the opposition knew that I was in the contest). That approach transferred to the team of the 80’s and we were extremely competitive during that era.
Was it difficult to be so dedicated to fitness when so many cricketers (and sportspeople in general) were smoking, drinking alcohol and generally not as healthy as what they could be in their lifestyle? They were not big issues in my early days. We played the game as amateurs so I did not concern myself with how others lived. I was in no position exert or influence others on what they did. Who was I to question to them? As time went on and when I played the game professionally I learned (through education) what smoking, drinking, drug taking could do to an individual. At the end of the day everyone has choices and if people in general including sportspeople want to smoke, drink and take drugs, there is an inevitable outcome and price to pay including affecting one’s playing performances and health issues. People may realise later in life it is too late say, “If only I had given up smoking and drinking earlier in life I may have given myself a chance of being a better player, being healthier and being a better person.” I think people can be influenced by others more today than in my time simply because research and education tells us the potential negative outcomes of various vices.
Q4
Will we ever get over the underarm bowl?
We will always forgive but not forget. February 1st, MCG, 1981 at 5.42pm!!!! It happened, it was a sad time in cricket history and unnecessary – we needed 6 runs to tie the match off the last ball. It was interesting to note that Rob Muldoon (NZ Prime Mime Minister at the time) said, “It was appropriate the Australians were dressed in yellow as it was an act of cowardice.” Tough words and many people would have agreed with those sentiments. 9 : BIZ WAIKATO
Should we? Of course we should. It was a legal delivery at the time that has since been outlawed. The fact that it happened brought into question ‘The Spirit of the game’ (fair play and sportsmanship) under public scrutiny.
Q5
Out of all the cricket players you’ve met, who has the greatest sense of humour? My team mate Derek Randall, a Notts player (from the county team I played for in the UK for 10 years), was a great character. He was the master of the one-liner. For example he had been involved in so many run outs and usually running his partner out. Before he would go into bat he would practice his shots and calling in the front of the mirror “Yes, No, Wait. Opps Sorry”. On one occasion he had batted brilliantly and scored 90 not out before lunch. Unfortunately he had run 3 of his team mates out. Before anyone could say a word he said, “Sorry fellas, I have been batting like Sir Donald Bradman but calling like Charlie Chaplin.”
Q6
Is it possible for our Readers to purchase any cricket books, mementos/souvenirs and etc from you? Yes. Go to www.hadlee.co.nz. There is a selection of items including signed mini bats and balls etc. Items can be ordered online. My greatest life achievement including all my playing performances is to bring to life my Dad’s diary of the 1949 NZ cricket tour to England. He was captain of the team and recorded happenings on every day of the 8 month tour. I wanted to honour my father and recognise the performances and achievements of the ‘Forty-Niners’ who were pioneers of New Zealand cricket. ‘The Skipper’s Diary’ and a two hour DVD documentary of the ‘Forty-Niners’ allows this team to live on and be remembered forever. Books and DVD combination are available online from www.theskippersdiary1949.com, email hadleerj@outlook.com
Q7
Your positive words of advice for our Readers
Dad’s advice was very important to me. He said, “Whatever you do Richard, take pride in your performance. Do it to the best of your ability and be happy if someone does better. No one can criticise you if you tried and gave 100%”. My motto in life, “A quitter never wins and a winner never quits”.

Opening The Book To Another World About 15 years ago, Te Awamutu farmer Bruce Graham ran out of things to read and wound up picking up a book about Māori history. It changed his life. Bruce Graham, Tauira (student), He Papa Tikanga NZ Certificate in Tikanga (Matauranga Maori) Level 3
He kept reading and became increasingly interested in the Māori view of the world. “Maybe I always felt a little bit guilty that I didn’t know this stuff, and that I was letting myself down and letting my country down that I didn’t know my own history,” he says. As a farmer, he paid particular attention to how Māori looked after their land.
• Māori words • the Māori worldview • values and belief systems
• traditions • philosophies • and protocols.
Students study at home and receive regular visits from a kaitiaki, along with having resources delivered to the door. Bruce says the course was incredibly helpful.
“I started thinking about the land, then I found out about how the Māori planted and when it was good to plant and when it was bad to plant.”
“I have learnt so much, especially around marae and tangi and stuff like that.” He says visiting marae is no longer the stressful experience it once was.
To further his education, Bruce enrolled in the fees-free He Papa Tikanga programme at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa and says it helped him learn more about a culture he’d largely ignored all his life.
“I feel comfortable that I know the procedure, and if I don’t know the procedure there is always some old gentleman or somebody that will help me.”
“You’ve got to get out of your comfort zone, especially being a Pākeha, and go out there and humble yourself, hūmārie,” he says. He Papa Tikanga is a 12-month introductory home-based learning programme into Māori culture and practices. 10 : BIZ WAIKATO

Council Responds To EMA Says CGT Decision Feedback On Development Is Good News For SMEs Contributions Policy Hamilton City Council responded to consultation feedback on its proposed Development Contributions (DC) Policy Update, voting not to include additional capital projects in the updated 2019/20 Policy. Consultation on the proposed Policy concluded on 29 April 2019, and sought feedback on six proposed changes.
A change to DC remissions in the Central Business District (CBD) is also proposed.
One of these key changes was the addition of further capital projects with a growth component into the calculations for DCs.
Under the 2018-28 10-Year Plan the Council decided to phase the former 100% CBD remission out across three years.
The decision reflected feedback from submitters which was strongly against introducing the additional charges for the coming financial year.
This meant a 66% remission in the current 2018/19 Policy, reducing to 33% in 2020/21, and removed altogether from 1 July 2021.
KNOW YOUR PROFESSIONALS
The remaining key changes are a capped charge for DCs for industrial, commercial and retail development in Rotokauri, reviewing estimated costs from the last financial year (replacing them with actual costs where these are known), and changing some definitions in the policy.
The proposed 2019/20 Policy extends the current 66% CBD remission to 30 June 2021, when the remission is removed completely. If implemented, the decision means developers would pay one third of DC costs in the CBD for the next two years and full DCs after that. The updated Policy is planned to be adopted in June and will be effective from July 1, 2019.
The Employers and Manufacturers Association (EMA) says it is relieved that the government has decided not to proceed with a Capital Gains Tax because of the detrimental effect it would have had on the productivity and growth of small to medium-sized businesses. “It wasn’t something that was going to meet the objectives of reducing over-investment in housing and increasing tax fairness, and it would have been at a significant cost for SMEs,” says chief executive Brett O’Riley [pictured]. “We commend the Government’s decision not to proceed as our members were telling us that a capital gains tax on their business assets would have discouraged investment and innovation, and hampered their ability to increase productivity and grow.” Mr O’Riley says with this no longer looming over them, EMA members can now concentrate on the very real challenges they face every day, chiefly the ability to get the people they need. “Economic growth indicators support what members are telling us about the difficulty in finding the workers they need to carry out their growth plans, and this is exacerbated by the current approach to immigration,” he says.
About the EMA:
• The EMA is New Zealand’s largest business support organisation. • It is a membership organisation that offers advice, training and advocacy for its 8500 members across all sectors from Taupo north, including Bay of Plenty, Waikato, Coromandel, Auckland and Northland. • A founding member of BusinessNZ, the country’s largest business advocacy group, they work together to ensure an environment where business can succeed based on world best practice.
“Dropping the CGT is one less issue for SMEs to deal with, especially with the volume of change this government is trying to introduce in the workplace.” CONTACT: 0800 300 362; melanie.mckay@ema.co.nz, www.ema.co.nz

Hamilton West Town Belt Masterplan Feedback has opened on a draft masterplan for an extensive open space in Hamilton. The West Town Belt is an expansive 54ha network of: • parks • gullies • sports facilities (including Seddon Park and FMG Stadium Waikato) • and community facilities on the edge of Hamilton’s central city. Originally serving as a boundary between the historic Hamilton and Frankton boroughs, the West Town Belt stretches from Hamilton Girls’ High School to Edgecumbe Park, linking the Hamilton Lake Domain to the Waikato River. Hamilton City Council’s Parks and Recreation Manager Maria Barrie says the Draft West Town Belt Masterplan is a long-term guide to the use and development of the West Town Belt over the next 30 years.
KNOW YOUR PROFESSIONALS
“Over time the West Town Belt has become a fragmented open space and there are many important sites located on the town belt requiring a comprehensive consideration and planning,” she says.
“The residential population of central Hamilton is also increasing, and existing and new residents need access to quality open space. “The Draft Masterplan has been developed to address these matters and ensure that moving forward, we develop a town belt that is a dynamic, well-used and treasured open space for all Hamiltonians and our visitors,” Ms Barrie says. The Draft West Town Belt Masterplan has been developed through an initial consultation with stakeholders and includes a vision, goals and five key strategies to enhance the space. The Masterplan breaks the West Town Belt down into nine character areas which provide a focus for more specific potential developments. The projects are not currently funded, however the plan would inform the Council on future decision-making. To view the Draft West Town Belt Masterplan, and to provide comment, visit www.hamilton.govt.nz/westtownbelt Feedback closes on Monday 27 May.

Council Want More Submissions For District Plan Waikato District Council wants ‘further submissions’ on nearly 1,000 submissions that it received following notification of the Proposed Waikato District Plan (Stage 1) in July last year. Waikato District Council Chief Executive Gavin Ion [pictured] says, “This is an important milestone on our progress towards finalising a new District Plan that brings together the old Franklin and Waikato sections to provide a consistent approach to development and growth across the district.” “A further submission is a written statement that allows you to support or oppose other people’s submissions.”
“It gives you the opportunity to comment on how a submission may impact you, and to have your views considered by the Hearings Panel along with the original submission. You do not need to have made an original submission to make a further submission.” The period for further submissions is open until 9am on Monday 27 May 2019. Anyone requesting to be heard will have an opportunity to present their submission in person at the hearings which are scheduled to start later this year. The District Plan impacts how the district’s land can be: • used • developed • and subdivided. Stage 1 of the Proposed District Plan includes all topics and provisions except those related to natural hazards and climate change, which form part of Stage 2. A draft of Stage 2 is expected to be released later this year.

Waikato University Opens New Tauranga Campus The new $60 million campus development, led by the University of Waikato on behalf of the Bay of Plenty Tertiary Partnership, enhances the range of qualifications and study options available to students in the Bay of Plenty.
Opinion:
The campus development has been made possible through the support and drive of the region, especially the key funders:
So far in 2019, over 900 individual students are using the new campus, a 32% increase on the same time last year.
• Tauranga City Council • Bay of Plenty Regional Council • Tauranga Energy Consumer Trust.
There are 31 general staff in Tauranga: 50 academic staff, and 36 academics visiting regularly from the Hamilton Campus.
Future Rates Increases Aligned to CPI
Submitted/By Hamilton City Councillor and Mayoral Candidate Angela O’Leary Hamilton City Council has been ‘rating people into poverty’ and it must stop.
This is especially true for super annuitants for whom the highest proportion of household expenses are rates.
Hamiltonians need greater certainty over the level of rates increases the Council is prepared to impose.
According to the New Zealand Taxpayers Union, rates are rising across New Zealand at almost five times the rate of inflation.
Rates increases at the level of this year’s increase, dip too far into the pockets of people with limited financial resources. The people who can least afford it are the ones who are hit the hardest.
KNOW YOUR PROFESSIONALS
This includes people on fixed incomes, young families and owneroperated businesses.
Between 2014 and 2017, rates charged by local authorities rose by an average of 12.8% while inflation was 2.6%.
Council needs to live within its means. Paying your rates is not a discretionary expense – it is a tax. And when we put rates up by amounts way in excess of the rate of inflation, it is a tax too far.
The 9.7% increase in Hamilton City rates this year places too big a burden on many homeowners and businesses.
While Council will always be responsible for infrastructure development and maintenance, developments in the city should be based on partnerships where everybody can benefit.
All councils are required by law to keep their rates increases to an affordable level, but not one of them has ever defined what ‘affordable’ means.
CONTACT: Angela O’Leary, phone 021 343 774, email angela@angelaoleary.co.nz, www.angelaoleary.co.nz
I believe council has a duty to all ratepayers, whether private or business ratepayers, to give them some certainty about what level of rates increases they can expect.
Editor’s note: leading up to the elections all Candidates are welcome to submit an opinion piece in Biz Waikato. Email to: info@bizhamilton.co.nz

The resolution to recommend was amended following feedback during the public forum, including a requirement for QRL to work with Te Haa o te Whenua o Kirikiriroa to complete a cultural assessment prior to applying for a qualifying development consent. The Government is repealing part of the legislation relating to SHAs, which means no further SHAs can be established after 16 September 2019, and 30 April 2019 was the final day the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development would accept applications.
Celebrates 20th
Submitted by Lynley Elliott, Novotel Tainui Hamilton
On Tuesday May 7th 2019, Novotel Tainui Hamilton celebrated its 20th anniversary with a cocktail party in the hotel. It was great to have a variety of guests attending the function, ranging from tribal leaders from Tainui Group Holdings, to the former Prime Minister of New Zealand, Mr. Jim Bolger, MP Mr. Jamie Strange to the Mayor of Hamilton, Andrew King. Under the guests, there were a lot of stakeholders that were instrumental in the early days of the hotel and worked together to make the hotel successful.
The hotel is currently working on building an additional 40 rooms as an extension to the already existing 177 rooms. Apart from this major investment in the property, TGH is also instrumental in upgrading the food & beverage outlet, of creating a destination restaurant, based on its Maori traditions and offering products which are related to the region.
Among the speakers on the evening were Parekawhia Maclean, the Chair of Waikato Tainui; Gillian Millar, Senior VP of Accor hospitality and Chris Joblin, CEO of Tainui Group Holdings.

Hamilton to Auckland Corridor Plan By Jamie Strange, Labour Party List MP
At my inaugural Grow Waikato event last month, the key discussion topic was the Hamilton to Auckland Corridor Plan. This extensive piece of work maps future development between Cambridge/Te Awamutu in the south and Pukekohe in the north. This corridor is the busiest in New Zealand, and has potential to be a key economic growth area over the coming years. The plan’s genesis comes from a meeting myself and Hon. Nanaia Mahuta held immediately after the 2017 general election with local mayors, senior officials and iwi. As chair of this meeting, I put forward the following question: “What are we going to collectively focus on as a region?” The answer to that question has evolved into the Hamilton to Auckland Corridor Plan, building on previous work done by Future Proof. 18 months on, we now have 40 Government agencies involved, from education and health to conservation and housing. Transport will play a key role in unlocking the potential of the corridor.

The passenger rail service will be operational in the first half of next year.
Two key components of the passenger rail service will be: 1. the ability to be productive while travelling 2. and having certainty of arrival time. The Waikato Expressway is on track to be finished by the end of next year. In terms of Hamilton-based roading, work has begun on the completion on the Ring Road, and a bridge across the Waikato River near Hamilton Gardens. This will unlock the 8,500 house Peacocke development, through $180 million from the Government’s 10-year interest-free loan and $110 million of NZTA subsidies. The Southern Links roading development, which unlocks commercial and residential land around the airport is included in the Corridor Plan. An important component of the plan is the potential for a metro-style passenger rail service linking Hamilton, Te Awamutu, Cambridge, Morrinsville, Ngaruawahia and Huntly. The bulk of this infrastructure is already in place, with only a few kilometres of track required in Cambridge.

Biz Humour
A very successful businessman went to visit his new son-in-law.
He said to him, “I love my daughter, and now I welcome you into the family. To show you how much we care for you, I’m making you a 50-50 partner in my business. All you have to do is go to the factory every day and learn how everything works.” The son-in-law said, “That’s very kind of you but I hate factories. I can’t stand the noise.” “Oh, I see,” said the father-in-law. “In that case, you can work in the office and take charge of some of the operations there.” “That’s very kind of you but I hate office work too,” said the son-in-law. “I can’t stand being stuck behind a desk in an office every day.” “Wait a minute,” said the father-in-law who was getting a little annoyed now. “I just made you half-owner of a huge money-making organization, but you don’t like factories and you won’t work in a office. What am I going to do with you?”
Boss to employees: ‘We will continue to have these meetings every single day until I work out why no work is being done’!
Is the glass half full? Is it half-empty? According to engineers, the glass is twice as big as it needs to be.
A young executive was leaving the office late one evening, when he finds the CEO standing in front of a shredder with a piece of paper in his hand.
I started my business with nothing and I still have most of it.
“Listen,” said the CEO, “this is a very sensitive and important document here, and my secretary has gone for the night.
‘Business is up and down at the moment; I sell yo-yos.’
How many opticians does it take to change a light bulb? Is it one or two? One… or two? One…or two?
Can you make this thing work for me?” “Certainly,” the young executive says. He turns the machine on, inserts the paper, and presses the start button. “Excellent, excellent!” says the CEO as his paper disappeared inside the machine. “I just need one copy.”

ModuSense is a reliable, scalable and secure Internet of Things (IoT) device platform that enables industries to quickly and easily deploy data gathering solutions for productivity.
• The ModuSense Hive Scale is a light-weight yet highly durable scale base for monitoring the weight of a beehive.
ModuSense powers a wide range of businesses from large enterprises to innovative start-ups and everyone in between. We provide everything you need to deploy remote data collection including: • • •
the device cloud based data storage and analysis platform connectivity hardware including cellular and satellite products.
• Combine with the ModuSense TH Sensor (environmental data from inside the hive) to achieve complete apiary health monitoring. GAS BOTTLE MONITOR: • The ModuSense Gas Bottle Monitor is a highly durable scale base for monitoring consumption of gas resources. • When combined with the ModuSense Gas Sensor you can not only monitor the consumption of gas but also detect possible leaks.
• Using the ModuSense Cloud you can setup triggers and alerts based on this exact condition. • For example if your water tank is dropping by an excessive amount per minute, you could get an alert to your phone or trigger an output on the ModuSense Gen2 Controller to disable the pump. PREDICTION ENGINE: • The ModuSense Cloud platform includes tools such as the ModuSense Prediction Engine, a sort of AI that determines from your data-sets what is likely to happen in the future. • Predicting the future is only possible if the past is a good indication, the quality and quantity of your historical data is key.
An Ecosystem For Industrial Data Collection
A Platform For Cohesive Data Analytics:
• Prediction allows for autonomous behaviours such as when to visit a bee hive to ensure peak yield.
Using industry standards and best of breed industrial quality hardware components, you can rely on ModuSense.
Once your telemetry gathering devices are collecting useful data, you need to turn it into valuable data.
RAW DATA API ACCESS:
The ModuSense hardware ecosystem starts with the ModuSense Gen-2 Controller, a ubiquitous sensor aggregation and communications controller that forms the core of every ModuSense deployment. UNIVERSAL CONTROLLER: • The ModuSense Universal Controller and Gateway with extendable communications modules and sensor inputs. • The controller allows almost endless expansion of sensors. • Leveraging industry standards allows for the adaptation of almost any sensor.

The rate at which new data will arrive, and the myriad of formats it will arrive in, make it impossible to be processed, distilled and understood by humans. For this reason the ModuSense Cloud is designed to make sense of data and generate meaningful insights, allowing companies to integrate and customise data so that it is readily accessible and actionable. EDGE (OUTLIER) DETECTION: • As a data-set grows it becomes possible to infer what is ‘normal’ and what might be an edge case or an outlier.
• Sometimes the data collected by the ModuSense platform is best used in conjunction with other data-sets on other analytics platforms. • To enable this, the ModuSense Cloud includes an open API that uses industry standard formats and technologies so you can integrate your ModuSense data with almost any other system in real-time. Hamilton’s Newest Bridge Hamilton’s next new Waikato River bridge is progressing with Councillors getting the first glimpse of the bridge’s form. At a briefing Hamilton City Council staff tabled four structural form options for the new bridge which will be south of the Hamilton Gardens, and be an essential gateway for Peacocke Hamilton’s next major growth area. The next step in the process is to further develop the concept based on the preferred bridge structure which will include a range of aesthetic elements for the Council to consider in June 2019.
“The preferred structural form has a single main flat deck with a large pier on the south bank. This is the basic bones of the bridge and will now give us opportunity to further develop it aesthetically so it can be a great experience for people looking at, travelling on, or under the bridge,” says Strategic Development Manager Andrew Parsons. “One of the benefits of the preferred structure is it allows for changes in traffic or bike lane widths in the future. “To make access and traveling using the bridge easy, it will include traffic lanes and have walking and biking paths on both sides connecting to existing and new networks. We’ll also keep in mind how some of our infrastructure ends up being used in other ways like steps which are often used for fitness.” Construction of the bridge is expected to start in late 2020 and be completed in 2023/24. The funding for the bridge was secured by the Council through the Government’s 10-Year interest-free Housing Infrastructure Fund and significant NZ Transport Agency subsidies.

Employment Relations Amendment Act In Full Force From 6 May 2019 the Employment Relations Amendment Act 2018 comes into full effect, with the exception of changes relating to discrimination in relation to union membership and involvement in union activities (effective from 12 June 2019). The Act introduces a number of employment law changes that aim to improve fairness in the workplace and deliver decent work conditions and fair wages. It gives more protections for employees, especially vulnerable workers, and strengthens collective bargaining and union rights in the workplace.

Many of the changes are familiar to employers, as they roll the law back to how it was as recently as 2015.
THE KEY CHANGES INCLUDE: 1. Limiting 90-day trial periods to businesses with 19 or fewer employees. 2. Reinstating set rest and meal breaks. 3. Restoring protections for vulnerable workers, such as those in the cleaning and catering industries, regardless of the size of their employer. 4. Strengthening collective bargaining and union rights.

Workplace Law
If Recreational Cannabis Use Is Legalised, How Would This Affect Employers? Testing for drug and alcohol use is one of the most contentious issues in New Zealand workplace law. The government has announced that New Zealanders will vote on legislation to legalise recreational cannabis at the 2020 election. That draft legislation will include a minimum age of 20 to use and purchase recreational cannabis and “stakeholder engagement.” Workplace drug and alcohol policies set out when the employer may test: on recruitment, for “reasonable cause”, post-accident/near miss and occasionally, random testing. With the legalisation of cannabis use, expect more challenges by workers over what amounts to reasonable cause, whether the worker is impaired, and how it affects or doesn’t affect work performance. This is less of an issue in safety sensitive workplaces and safety sensitive roles where zero tolerance the norm. Employers may need to revisit workplace policies that address cannabis use. Employers would still have the right to set rules for recreational use of cannabis in the workplace.
They have a duty to ensure, so far as reasonably practicable, that the workplace and anything arising from it are without risks to the health and safety of persons lawfully in the workplace and its vicinity. So, they may, for example, prohibit use of cannabis at work or during working hours and prohibit employees from attending work while impaired. Workplace rules regarding non-medical use of cannabis will still be enforced through the application of the employer’s progressive disciplinary policy, unless cannabis addiction can be proved, in which case it becomes a medical capacity issue and will need to be treated accordingly. Assessment of impairment at work may prove to be the most difficult aspect of designing and implementing workplace policies. And, if the legislation is passed with a cut-off age of 20, employers will be faced with a dilemma. Do they apply the same rules for workers under 20 years, as workers 20 years and over, and if not, what is the justification for this? If voters say “yes” we encourage employers to have their say in the Parliamentary Select Committee stages about how this will work in practice.

Cash Flow Quickeners
By Philip Wicks
Cash flow is often called ‘the lifeblood of a business’, and for several good reasons. But the flow of cash into most businesses is uneven and there can be times when a constrained cash flow creates serious problems, even if the long-term situation is positive.
Improving sales forecasting and optimising production planning are other areas to look for improvements.
There are, however, ways to improve the cash flow of any small business and remove some of the worries about bills not being paid or not having enough on hand to pay wages.
Making minor process changes and a better utilisation of processes and systems already in place will allow most businesses to achieve an inventory reduction of 20% or greater quickly and without a great deal of expense.
These mainly involve no more than adjustments to what you’re already doing and so aren’t difficult to implement. KEEP INVENTORIES AS LOW AS POSSIBLE Inventories are expensive in many ways. There’s the interest paid on money borrowed to acquire items that are awaiting sale. There are also the costs for storage space and handling, as well as insurance expenses and the ‘opportunity cost’ of what money spent on inventory could be earning elsewhere. In some cases, inventories are so badly managed that much of the material becomes obsolete before it can be sold. Having too much inventory is an indication that business process problems exist in the organisation. Some of these problems include: • poor sales and operations planning • inaccurate forecasting • ineffective production scheduling • the existence of bottlenecks in one or more systems just to name a few of the possibilities. Inventories can be reduced by focusing on fast turnover lines or cutting down on the number of items in stock by negotiating with suppliers for faster replacements.
REDUCE YOUR REPAYMENT OBLIGATIONS
REWARD C.O.D. OR FAST PAYMENTS A discount for cash or fast payments is a good incentive for customers to pay you quickly – even ahead of other creditors who don’t offer a reward for early settlement of their accounts. The old system of ‘2% discount if paid in ten days or the net in thirty days’ still isn’t bad if you can communicate it and enforce it, although payment within sixty days is now more common if customers are allowed to get away with it. CREDIT CHECK EVERY CUSTOMER
Even the smallest business probably has at least: • one loan for stock and operating expenses • a loan for a motor vehicle • a loan for some form of capital equipment • a credit card or two for travel and entertainment.
Some small businesses make the big mistake of taking on customers solely on the basis of their appearance.
You can save a great deal of interest and improve your cash flow position by consolidating as many of these loans as possible into just one monthly repayment and negotiating a loan term that’s in line with your cash flow and income projections rather than have it dictated by past conditions that may no longer apply.
Give every customer a thorough credit check and if in doubt ask for references from other firms before letting them run up a bill with you.
WATCH YOUR INVOICING Prepare your invoices promptly and send them out on a regular basis. Customers are more prepared to pay a bill on time if it’s received shortly after they’ve received their goods or services. The longer you wait, the longer they’ll wait to pay you.
If the customer pays cash for their first order they might even forego a credit check. This can be a big mistake that leads to massive cash flow and debt collection problems.
TRY BARTERING FOR WHAT YOU WANT Because bartering uses something in your inventory to pay for something your business acquires it can benefit cash flow to a degree. Bartering can be particularly beneficial for service businesses with unused capacity, such as a plumber exchanging labour for capital equipment. Bartering also offers some valuation flexibilities that can increase the value of benefits received.
