Ex-teachers think Ryman is in a class of it’s own

Mike and Anne are ready for River Road! Former teachers Mike and Anne have made careers out of helping young people shape their futures. But when it came to deciding on their own future, Anne admits Mike was a few steps ahead of her. “Mike came home from playing golf one day and told me a few of his friends had signed contracts for Ryman’s new village at River Road,” recalls Anne. “He was really keen on the idea but my reaction was, ‘we have got a beautiful home here, we can walk to golf, why would I?” Indeed, the couple live in a stunning spacious home with a pool, just a stone’s throw from St Andrew’s Golf Club, where they spend hours

walking the greens playing golf. But after considering the idea for a couple of months, Anne says she was completely converted! “I realised that it’s a really big house and we’d have to downsize anyway and the point was, downsize to what? And to where? Anne recalls her Mum having to pack up her house on her own after her father passed away. “She went into her own retirement accommodation but she never really settled because she’d left it too late.” Mike, an only child, also had an elderly parent left alone. “We didn’t want our kids to go through that same experience because it’s quite

traumatic when you have got that parent that’s left behind.” The couple decided to learn more about the village and arranged to meet sales advisor David de Veth who they described as ‘just lovely and so helpful’. “We saw that the town houses were nearly all gone,” says Anne. “We only went there to have a look but we ended up putting a yellow [hold] sticker on it!” she laughs. Anne says she spent the next few days really thinking hard about the decision, one of the biggest decisions in their lives. “We could stay here for another ve years and be quite happy but we wanted to do it when we were

both t and well and young enough to adjust. “We have been married for 50 years and have done everything together and I wanted to be in control of this process.” The extra care available at the village, should they need it, was an added bonus, and both admit the great location in such a beautiful part of Hamilton was very appealing too. “Because it’s being built now it’ll be nice and new.” The reactions of their two children and their solicitor really sealed the deal. “Both our son and daughter were very relieved,” says Anne. “And our solicitor was very positive. He asked where could he sign up?!”

Since then, Mike says Anne has been on a decluttering mission, throwing out piles of clothes and stacks of paperwork. Says Anne in a no-nonsense tone: “My approach is to ask do we need it? Will we use it? And can we t it in the new place? If we can’t do it, it’s gone!” Now as they look ahead, the couple are already anticipating the perks of retirement living and what that will mean for their quality of life. “We can just lock up and leave, and we don’t have to mow the lawns or clean the windows! So there’ll be more time for golf and travel and spending time with the grandchildren.”

Hamilton City Council Launches Elections Website & Video Series Members of Hamilton’s diverse community star in a key element of Hamilton City Council’s campaign to encourage participation in this year’s local government elections. The yourcityelections.co.nz website launches today, featuring a series of videos fronted by a wide range of people passionate about Hamilton and its future. The videos challenge Hamiltonians to help shape their neighbourhoods by standing for Council and voting for the city’s Elected Members. Pitoitua (Tua) Lelevaga Laulu, from Pukete, took part in the video project because of the value he places on having the right to vote. “Having a vote means so much to me and my family,” he says. “It gives us a voice, to pick who we feel best fits as a leader that can represent not only me, but my family and Hamilton.” Sarah Mason Burrell shared her voice via New Zealand Sign Language in the videos. “A good leader is a person who’s motivated, keeps their promises, engages with the public and has the city’s values at heart,” she says. Hamilton’s voter turnout in the 2016 local government elections was 33.6%, the lowest of all New Zealand metropolitan centres, and the fourth lowest of all councils.

The Council’s Chief Executive, Richard Briggs, says Hamilton deserves better. “These elections will decide who leads our neighbourhoods through an exciting and important time that will help define our city’s future,” says Mr Briggs. “We must increase wider community engagement in the business of Council and in the running of our city. Your decision to stand and vote is an opportunity to share your voice and shape your city.” The yourcityelections.co.nz website brings together in one place everything you need to know to make an informed decision about standing for Council and who to vote for. It includes an Events page for community organisations to promote candidate information evenings and mayoral debates. When the nomination period closes (Friday August 16), a Candidates page will feature profiles of each of the mayoralty and Council aspirants.

Nominations for Mayor and the 12 Councillors open on Friday 19 July. Voting papers will be delivered between Friday 20 September and Wednesday 25 September. Voting closes at 12pm on Saturday 12 October. Hamilton City Council https://ourhamilton.co.nz

CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR NEW SEMINAR From the very beginning of time, human beings have pondered the big issues. Fast forward to the present day and we are still seeking truth. What I have noticed is that there are certain times in our lives when we begin to look beneath the surface and question the very nature of our existence here on Earth. I believe that we, as curious beings, begin seeking answers to the time-old questions of life because it is an essential part of our journey back to our divine Self. Why are we here? Where do we go after death? Why did my loved one pass? How do I manage feelings of loss? Am I alone in the darkness of my life? There is no doubting that life is the greatest mystery of all, but it is also a profound spiritual experience which often leaves us deeply longing for a guiding light.

There is no need to fear because I have been told that the universe certainly works in mysterious ways, and we are always guided to certain people and places for reasons beyond our comprehension to assist with our soul’s ascension to higher levels of consciousness. Through my work as a spiritual psychic medium and healer, I have come to understand that enduring loss is one of the hardest battles to overcome. I am fully aware that grief is most certainly a personal process with no time limit. It is heart wrenching and bitterly lonely. Believe me when I tell you that no soul on the Earth is immune to grief. It might not feel this way, but I am here to say that you are not alone in your pain. We will all feel the suffocating grip of grief at some point in our lives, however this does not mean that we need to suffer alone, or be left in the dark without the appropriate tools to escape our dark mental prisons. For this reason, I felt that it was time to create an intimate learning experience to assist grieving people with their soul’s healing. I felt this would be of benefit to many people because the vast majority of us suffer in silence through our times of loss simply because we feel bitterly alone. My seminar will assist you to navigate through the deep waters of loss and grief, helping you to break down the patterns of your emotions which have prevented you from reaching your highest Self. I truly believe that we all have the power to transform our lives, but for many, a guiding light is needed to reveal the beauty of love, hope and faith – after all, it is in this space of light that you begin to find the love of yourself. If you might be interested in working with me to unlock the power within in order to transform your grief, I would encourage you to come along to my forthcoming seminar. Your presence would be warmly welcomed and I assure you that your healing journey will be one that will lead you to a place of heartfelt emancipation. English Flower Garden at the Hamilton Gardens  Lush flower borders

 Neatly clipped hedges

The ENGLISH FLOWER GARDEN at Hamilton Gardens evokes a bygone era which found inspiration in the work of traditional craftsmen and the beauty of nature. The “Arts and Craft” movement in England at the turn of the 20th century produced many great gardens that valued traditional crafts and architecture. It was also a reaction to the artificial Victorian gardens with their geometric bedding schemes. They called this new style of gardens ‘natural’ but they were high maintenance gardens and not at all natural in the modern sense of the word. The tradition started around 1870 and ended with the Great War (1914-1918) when it was no longer affordable to employ teams of skilled gardeners to look after high maintenance herbaceous gardens.

 The tinkling of a water fountain

 The gentle cooing of doves

Gardens of that era are still highly evocative and have often been referred to as “the gardens of a golden afternoon”. The best-known designers of these Arts and Crafts gardens were Gertrude Jekyll (1843-1942) and Edwin Lutyens and their designs have inspired this English garden. The planting in the English Flower Garden has been generally based on Jekyll’s planting plans, the architectural elements on Lutyen’s designs. Hedges and walls were used to create a series of outdoor rooms that provided the framework for sophisticated planting schemes influenced by the Impressionist painters. Jekyll had trained as a painter and was renowned for bringing that thinking about light and colour to her planting schemes. Various traditional elements are incorporated in the English Flower Garden at Hamilton Gardens, including a lily pond and the Lutyens-designed Millmead Pavilion with its bell-shaped roof. The Long Garden, which runs between the fountain and the rose arbour, is an example of the tonal herbaceous border popularised by Jekyll. In the monochromatic-themed White Garden, the seat is a reproduction of the classic Lutyens bench. “A garden is a grand teacher. It teaches patience and careful watchfulness; it teaches industry and thrift; above all, it teaches entire trust.” – Gertrude Jekyll, 1899

Some buildings can be seen on Grantham Street which was where European settlers first established businesses before relocating higher up to Victoria Street. Amazing Hemp Facts • Levi jeans were originally made out of hemp, for its durability and it’s abundant availability at the time. • Hemp is among the oldest industries on the planet, going back more than 10,000 years to the beginnings of pottery. • The Columbia History of the World states that the oldest relic of human industry is a bit of hemp fabric dating back to approximately 8,000 BC. • Presidents Washington and Jefferson both grew hemp. • The bark of the hemp stalk contains bast fibres, which are among the Earth’s longest natural soft fibres and are also rich in cellulose. The cellulose and hemi-cellulose in its inner woody core are called hurds. • Hemp stalk is not psychoactive. • Hemp paper more than 1,500 years old has been found.

• Hemp fibre is longer, stronger, more absorbent and more insulative than cotton fibre. • Hemp fibre paper resists decomposition, and does not yellow with age when an acidfree process is used. • Hemp paper can also be recycled more times than wood-based paper. • Eco-friendly hemp can replace most toxic petrochemical products. • Research is being done to use hemp in manufacturing biodegradable plastic products: plant-based cellophane, recycled plastic mixed with hemp for injection-moulded products, and resins made from the oil, to name a very few examples. • Over two million cars on the road today have hemp composite parts for door panels, dashboards, luggage racks, etc. 9

By the Hamilton Vintage & Classic Car Club A cold frosty foggy morning greeted the early arrivals to the July Classic Car Meet and Boot Sale at Classics Museum/Duke Box Diner car park. As the sun slowly made its appearance through the gloom the cars started drifting in and by 9.30am well over 40 classics had assembled. With a wide range of different makes and models in attendance it made for a spectacular display. Several boot sale venders were in attendance with a few treasures changing hands With the cold temperature outside the hot buffet breakfast and coffee was going down a treat in the Duke Box Diner. The usual prizes were awarded during the morning with The Duke Box Diner car of day award going to a very unusual Toyota Century V12. THE TOYOTA CENTURY is a large four-door limousine produced mainly for the Japanese market, serving as Toyota’s flagship car within Japan; globally the unrelated Lexus LS series is Toyota’s flagship luxury model outside Japan. Production of the Century began in 1967, and the model received only minor changes until a redesign in 1997. The Century derived its name from the 100th birthday of Sakichi Toyoda (born 14 February 1867), the founder of Toyota Industries.

It is often used by • the Imperial House of Japan • the Prime Minister of Japan • senior Japanese government leaders • and high-level executive businessmen. The Century is comparable in purpose to the • Austin Princess/Daimler DS420 • Cadillac Series 70 • Mercedes-Benz 600 • Chinese Red Flag • Rolls-Royce • and Russian ZIS/ZIL limousines. The first-generation Century was available with only a V8 engine, the third Japanese-built sedan post-war, at its introduction in 1967 until a full platform redesign in 1997. The second generation was only installed with a Toyota-designed and built V12, an engine unique to the Century, until 2018, when the power-train was reverted to a V8 with the addition of Toyota’s hybrid technology. While the Century is a premium, full-size luxury sedan, it is not available at Japanese Lexus dealerships; it can only be purchased at specifically identified Toyota Store locations. The bird logo used throughout is called the Hō-ō or Fushichō from Asian mythology, representing the Imperial House of Japan.

The exterior styling of the Century has, with some modifications, remained unchanged since its introduction, primarily due to its perception as denoting conservative success. Its appearance is iconic in Asian countries and is usually painted black. The closest Japanese competitor was the Nissan President, with a similar status reputation although, during the 1960s and ‘70s, the high market positioning was also shared with the Mitsubishi Debonair. Other Japanese competitors introduced large sedans – the Isuzu Statesman de Ville and the Mazda Roadpacer (derived from General Motors-Australia products) – which were short-lived. Herbs for Health

By Palmers Hamilton

The practice of using herbal remedies to improve and strengthen the natural healing process is as old as time.

Suitable conditions for growing herbs Herbs do not require rich soil – in fact, this can result in soft, leggy growth that may collapse the plant in dry conditions. Mulch around herbs to prevent drying out. Most herbs require good drainage to encourage lush growth. Herbs generally prefer soil of a gravelly nature. The great majority of herbs like sunshine, low humidity and evenly distributed rainfall. Small leaved varieties generally come from Mediterranean countries, so they thrive best in open sunny positions which are protected from cold winds.

Herbs in the landscape A special herb garden is very attractive and can be formal or informal in design. A large container or collection of pots will also make an excellent herb garden. But herbs do not have to be in an isolated plot of their own, or just in the vegetable garden. They have become a valuable part of the garden as a whole. When landscaping, many of the perennial herbs should be included with other perennials, roses and ornamentals as part of the overall garden design.

Herbs and your health The practice of using herbal remedies to improve and strengthen the natural healing process is as old as time. The fresher the better – all the more reason to grow your very own herb garden. Most herbal medicines are taken in the form of teas. When using herbs for medicinal purposes, fresh herbs should be used whenever possible. If using dried, use only 1/3 of the quantity specified. Use about three tablespoons of chopped fresh herbs to one cup of boiling water, cover and stand for five minutes for flavour to fully develop. This is commonly referred to as “infusing”. If a sweetener is required, use honey rather than sugar.

Herbal teas Lovage: A strong flavoured leaf which acts as a wind expeller. Mint: All varieties are soothing for stomach ailments. Peppermint: Is particularly good for colds. Parsley: A good diuretic which cleans the kidneys and is very rich in iron. Rosemary: Good for stomach upsets.

Sage: Gargle for sore throats. Take for feverish colds. Summer Savoury: Relieves flatulence and stomach upsets. Tansy: A herb said to get rid of worms. Do not take during pregnancy. Tarragon: Relieves toothache and stops hiccups. Thyme: Relieves headaches and insomnia. Yarrow: Promotes perspiration, so it is good for feverishness in colds and flu. A herb is a delightful plant with many uses far beyond the purely decorative. As well as blending beautifully with most garden schemes, their varieties of foliage, colours, textures, tastes, and perfumes give much pleasure. And once again, the ancient healing properties of herbs are becoming more widely used. CONTACT: Palmers Hamilton, 60 Lincoln Street, Frankton. Open 7 days, 8.30-5pm.

the corn flour and cold water

Britten

Cantando’s Musical Director, Rupert D’Cruze has chosen works which reflect the great English choral tradition for the choir to perform in this programme. The concert opens with a setting of Psalm 150 by Benjamin Britten, well-known for works such as The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra and his War Requiem.

Britten had a particular interest and skill in writing music for children and Psalm 150 was originally composed for a two-part children’s choir to celebrate the centenary of his own prep school, Old Buckingham Hall School. English organist, conductor and composer, Malcolm Archer was born in 1952. He is described as being a “master of the choral idiom, writing marvellous melodies which lodge in the memory”. “Archer’s Requiem has links to those of Fauré and Duruflé” says Rupert, “and we look forward to presenting this fine example of his beautiful melodic work to our audience, ably supported by David Woodcock at the piano.“ This concert is sure to be a popular one and seating at the Academy is limited, so be quick to secure your ticket! Tickets: • Adults $30 • Seniors and Unwaged $25 • Student with ID $15 • Family (2 Adults & 2 Children) $65 (additional children $10, underfives free) • Group Bookings (10 seats) $200. Available by: • emailing info@cantando.org.nz • phoning our Ticket Hotline on 021 1393 796 (payment by internet banking only) • from choir members or at the Academy. 15

HEARING HELP If you have some form of hearing loss the Hamilton Hearing Association can help you. Our organization is dedicated to the welfare of the hearing impaired in our community.

Isn’t it fascinating the way nature prepares what we need in season in the garden. In the heart of winter the vibrant and vitamin C filled citrus are ready to brighten us up and offer their nutrients in the colder months when we need them most.

Planting

Harvesting

Where soil is workable, you can sow beetroot, broccoli, cabbages, cauliflowers and lettuce.

Citrus fruit are on the menu with orange, lemon, grapefruit, lime, and mandarin all ripening.

Citrus trees, and deciduous fruit trees such as plums, pears and apples are all available for planting now.

Wait till fruits have fully coloured up before you pick them as they won’t continue ripening when off the tree.

It’s a good time to plant these more permanent items as the cooler weather and damp soil helps them to get off to a good start in our gardens. Make sure you choose varieties that suit your garden climate.

Winter Planting Tip If your soil is damp, lumpy or hard to improve, you can help seedlings out with a wee soil sleeping bag. Make a planting hole about the size of a mug in your beds and fill this with softer potting mix.

We Offer: • Membership discounts on batteries & equipment • Free information, advice and support • Minor hearing aid maintenance & repairs • Personal assistance with hearing aids • Home Visits - There is a cost for this service • Education of the general public • Raising awareness of hearing loss, hearing protection • Full diagnostic hearing tests by our Audiologist • Weekly clinics by Ear Nurse for ear suctioning

Tamarillo, persimmon, and guava are also ready to enjoy at this time of year. In the vege patch we’ve been enjoying the first of our winter lettuces, along with broccoli and Asian greens.

You can use this time to give your beds a thorough dig through, to loosen and prepare the soil for spring planting.

Plant individual seedlings into these holes and they’ll get off to a good start. By the time roots reach the slightly rougher soil outside the sleeping bag they should be getting strong enough to push through.

We have a variety of assistive listening devices for sale. We provide free demonstration of all our equipment and are very price competitive. Sample of Product in Store for Sale.

Q1

Q3

Is The Hamilton Central Business District (CBD) Saveable Or Is It Doomed In Terms Of Perceivable Every Second Building Being Derelict, Lots Of Homeless People, No Parking, No Clean Safe Toilets?

Hobbies/Interests

First Month As Mayor: What Will You Achieve?

The Council won’t even be sworn in by the first month!

Hamilton’s Central City is certainly not “doomed” and just like other metro cities of similar size all around the world has been dealing with the same things. With the creation of ‘big box retail’ and large shopping malls, CBD’s have had to reinvent themselves, and Hamilton is no exception. While the perception that the CBD “is dying” might linger, it is far from the reality of what’s actually happening.

But I have a plan and one of the things I will achieve in my first 100 days in office as Mayor will be to establish a Plain English Policy that will mandate all Council communications.

Q4

Why Should Those Aged Over 50 And Retirees Vote For You?

Recent rates increases have been too high and those most affected are people on fixed incomes.

Dancing and hiking are my two top interests. I’ve been doing Ballroom and Latin dance for the last 7 years and love it. I’ve hiked all over the Waikato region and done most of the main hikes several times. I haven’t yet done any of New Zealand’s great walks though as the job keeps me too busy. But they are on my list to get to eventually!

Other candidates will tell you they will keep rates “affordable”, but we’ve heard that before.

Over the last few years there has been a massive increase in commercial and residential development happening in town. There are thousands of new employees now working in town bringing much needed activity for businesses. The latest exciting new development being proposed on the old Ebbett Holden site on Anglesea Street will cover a whole block and create 2,000 new jobs.

Q2

Why Run For Mayor?

I am tired of the dodgy deals being done under the current Mayor’s leadership and I have the courage and integrity to get Council and Hamilton back on track. I am the most experienced candidate in this election and as Mayor will put the residents and the city – above all else.

I will align future rates increases to the costs of living in my first term.

Q5

Personal

Last Book Read I don’t get a lot of time to read novels as most of my time is spent reading Council papers or researching but when I do it’s usually related somehow to politics! I also have a tendency to read several at once so currently on the bedside table is The Art and Craft of Policy, Waikato Wars and Chasing Hillary.

A Group Of Friends/Family Turn Up At Your Place Unexpectedly For Lunch: What Are You Going To Whip Up To Eat? Probably my favourite Chicken and Pineapple Salad and some hot crusty bread!

Prime Popular Columnist:

The Farce Is The Thing

One of the abiding questions that seems never to lose its lustre for those who continue to ask it, following all polite enquiries regarding one’s health, the weather and sundry other fluff as the questioner girds their figurative loins for the plunge, one of the early questions oft asked about Pacifist Battling is, “Why do you do it?” – a rather less than subtle reference to one having the appearance of an adult (wonderful what a peppering of grey hair can achieve), and therefore why would one willingly make a fool of oneself … IN PUBLIC WHERE PEOPLE CAN SEE YOU?! Perhaps the simplest answer is that, like stand-up/ slap-stick comedians from the Vaudeville era, one wishes to be the entire centre of attention. Or that one lives for the audience reaction, that rare drug without which no performer’s day is complete. And despite being obvious answers, or perhaps because of that, neither one really fits the bill. For oneself, the driving raison d’être for fighting Pacifist Battles, preferably in front of a huge audience, is that they are FUN!

20

And we go further: they can provide personal support and advocacy to help you with a range of issues. They have staff trained to deal with elder abuse and others who provide services for seniors who are socially isolated. Age Concern Hamilton is here to serve your needs. Open Monday-Friday, 8.30am-3pm. Celebrating Age Centre, 30 Victoria Street, Hamilton. Phone 07 838 2266, email enquiries@ageconcern.gen.nz

The performance aspects certainly appeal to: • the frustrated thespian in one’s soul (learning lines has never been one’s forté); • the attire for Off Duty events (a simple choice between Dress Reds or Mess formal for an Officer) appeal to the desire to look one’s best in a social situation; • the meeting with other members of the broader performing community is most certainly enjoyable, as is the socialising with friends, the being different, the marching upstream against a flow of trenchant modernism-at-all-costs. And all of that truth aside, there, sitting firmly at the heart of every battle where one gets covered in flour, mud, sweat (that would be perspiration for the Honorary Chaps), leaves, lawn clippings and anything else that happens along is the eightton bull elephant raging across the room, that gloriously three-lettered apparent expletive – F-U-N! But Life should be taken seriously! One has been told this on many occasions, and certainly that needs to be true in its appropriate place.

By Major Blunder

However, this Serious Business called Life should also be leavened with joy, FUN, laughter and the sure and certain knowledge that having slain the Enemies of the Queen, God Bless Her, today, one can go forth and do it all over again tomorrow with the same people, on the same site and have an equally enjoyable but totally different experience. So Yes, Gentle Reader, one has done this thing called Pacifist warfare for just over 34 years, and fully intend to continue to have FUN all, over New Zealand, for the foreseeable future and quite probably well beyond it, because we never know quite what will happen next … now do we? Hope that helps. CONTACT: Major Blunder, Officer Commanding, Fifth Waikato Dragoons Regiment, Northern Command, Alf’s Imperial Army, Humour in Uniform. Humbly Yours By Chris Packer

Animal friends, especially dogs, often accompany their owners to the Cafe Fresca garden for a spot of outdoor socialising. Sitting near or lying under the tables with a bowl of fresh water nearby they are always the perfect little (or big) guests. Often they wait patiently for a long time, just happy to be near their people. An unusual bout of warning bark erupted recently when one small dog was surprised by the hospital helicopter flying low overhead. When the intruder was ‘scared’ off she settled down to doze again. Porcelain ornaments of animals have for many years been popular additions to home decor and many styles have gone through phases of great popularity like: • the tiny Wade Whimsie animals • the Scandanavian modernist lines of Llardo porcelain in shades of blue and grey • and the large Victorian Staffordshire pottery English bred dogs like the bulldog, spaniel and Scotty dog

More realistic animals produced by the Italian Castagna potteries kept to the earthy colours of dog coats with all their rich textures and expressive doggy faces. A zoo of wild animal ornaments has always been popular, like: • elephants • tigers • bears • and monkeys moulded and carved in a variety of materials and in sometimes gruesome poses.

that sat majestically on the fire hearth and often broke a foot in that place. Many now survive with a glued back paw.

Some animals have become accidental collections like the lady who brought back a pair of elephant embroidered cushion covers from a trip to Asia and then everyone assumed she would like more elephants and she has received a steady stream of elephant gifts ever since.

In the 1950’s trios of small china poodles in white, black or pink posed with bows, topknots and pom-pom tails. They were the perfect reference to the Paris inspired fashions of the era.

Whimsical animals were produced to accompany favourite stories and Disney films of the 1950’s; Bambi the deer and Dumbo the elephant come to mind. Take delight in your ornamental animal companions.

Super Age Must Rise Retirement Commissioner Diane Maxwell recommends to raise the age of eligibility for Superannuation to 67, saying the government needed to show courage for the sake of future generations. “Under the current settings, no, we cannot afford NZ Super,” said Maxwell. “It’s currently costing $39 million a day, or $14.5 billion a year. In 20 years’ time that cost will triple to about $115 million a day.” She acknowledged that the economy would grow in that time, which would cover part of the increased cost. “But it won’t cover all of it. We have to consider raising the age, reducing the amount paid, or reaching some form of means testing.” Maxwell said changes needed to include helping people prepare to work longer. Around 44% of New Zealanders already continued to work past 65, and that figure would keep rising. Wound into this was the declining rate of home ownership. Maxwell said Super was designed on the assumption that those reaching the age of eligibility were living in their own home mortgage free, but there was an increasing number of people reaching 65 either still paying a mortgage, or renting.

“If you’re relying on Super and also paying rent you’re up against it. We’re working on programmes to help people get onto home ownership pathways, but more needs to be done to provide affordable housing for our elderly in the future.” Both issues are being studied in Commission for Financial Capability CFFC’s three yearly Review of Retirement Income Policies this year. The Commission for Financial Capability (CFFC) is an independent governmentfunded organisation helping people to get ahead financially. They work to ensure the retirees of today and tomorrow are equipped with the financial knowledge, skills and confidence to make good financial decisions at every stage of their lives and reach retirement in good financial health. They use the term financial capability to mean New Zealanders are better managing debt, accumulating savings, owning homes, and able to weather emergencies.

Ride on NZ’s only genuine WWII DUKW’S! The DUKW, more affectionately known as ‘Ducks’, were US military vehicles that were born due to necessity. The US were having trouble supplying their troops. Their large supply ships unable to get close to the shore meant it became an arduous task to load the supplies onto smaller boats, taking them into shore and then unloading them again onto trucks to take to the troops. To solve this the military Generals approached an America’s Cup yacht designer named Rod Stevens and a talented and well known engineer named Palmer Putnam. These two men were tasked with transforming a US army truck known as a GMC deuce and a half into something that could leave the supply ships and easily take supplies all the way to the troops. The Ducks did amazing work during the war shipping over 1 million tonnes of mixed supplies into the troops on the front lines like no military had ever seen before. The Ducks were used extensively in the Pacific and even later in the war were used for landings including the D Day and Normandy landings among others.

Library Agreement Reflects Councils’ Collaboration

EXTEND YOUR LIVING WITH A CONSERVATORY OR CANOPY ROOF

Shared library services between Hamilton residents and for Waikato District residents in the immediate areas around Hamilton will resume next month after an agreement between the two councils was approved. Hamilton Mayor Andrew King says growth in Hamilton and the wider region is exciting and is producing economic and social benefits. “This libraries agreement is a tangible example of how closer relationships between councils can provide benefits for the people we serve. We recognise our people live, work and socialise in their communities of interest, regardless of territorial boundaries. I’ve been very appreciative of the way staff and elected members between our councils have been able to work through this agreement in a way which puts our residents first,” Mayor King says. Waikato District Mayor Allan Sanson said he was pleased with the decision by Hamilton City Council, saying that it represented a fair deal.

“Our residents living near to Hamilton City will again be able to have open access to Hamilton’s libraries. This is an example of one of the many things our two councils are working through for the benefit of our collective population,” Mayor Sanson says. The libraries agreement comes at a time when both councils are working (along with Waipa District Council) on a shared metropolitan spatial plan for the region, a plan which sets out a long-term pathway for quality, sustainable growth for generations to come. The councils are also partners in the Hamilton to Auckland Corridor Plan, which is designed to ensure environmental, social and economic sustainability for one of the country’s highest growth areas.

By the Heart Foundation

Did you know that volunteering for a great cause like the Heart Foundation can increase your happiness and health? Doing good for others is also good for you. 1. IT GIVES YOU A SENSE OF PURPOSE 2. IT CAN KEEP YOU ACTIVE AND, AS A RESULT, HEALTHIER We all know being active is good for your body and your mind. In fact, 76% of people that volunteered in the last 12 months, said they felt healthier as a result. Plus, a 2013 American study showed that people who volunteered were less likely to have high blood pressure. Lots of volunteer roles rely on you to get up and get active. Don’t worry, we won’t make you run a marathon (although you can if you want to). There are lots of other jobs that will keep you moving. Even making the trip into your local Heart Foundation office, to help with admin or an event is a good way to get up and out of the house.

28

For many volunteers, the benefits are social – it’s a way of getting involved in your local community. The more voluntary work you do, the more people you’ll get to meet. It’s the perfect way to meet likeminded friends. What’s more, social support helps recovery following a heart attack or other heart event. 4. VOLUNTEERING IS UNIVERSAL Ever get the feeling you’re part of something ‘big’ when you volunteer? That’s because you are! Volunteering happens all over the world. 5. YOU’RE MAKING A DIFFERENCE This one’s kind of obvious – but it’s so important it’s worth repeating. When you volunteer you actively making a positive difference in the world. No matter how big or small, that’s awesome.

3. IT’S SOCIAL

No wonder volunteers feel good.

A sense of belonging and good relationships are important for personal happiness.

With New Zealand’s population of over 65s set to surpass one million by 2050, Seniors@work Founder Ian Fraser is on a mission to promote the benefits of tapping into a senior workforce and help solve the growing skills shortage in the country. Having found himself unexpectedly out of work days before his 60th birthday, Fraser was shocked to discover that job hunting in your 60s is incredibly challenging. “I literally have a lifetime of knowledge and experience. I have worked in industries both here and overseas, I have started companies, learned from successes and failures and yet I couldn’t find a job”, Fraser said. After speaking with others in the 60+ community, Fraser discovered that his was not an isolated experience and senior workers struggle to find employment. “It seems crazy to me that New Zealand businesses are complaining about a skills shortage, when we have a goldmine of skills, experience and talent available in our senior community”, Fraser said. Fraser knows that the biggest challenge to overcome is a subconscious bias and negative connotations associated with being elderly. To counter this, he has established Seniors@work, an organisation that is working with employers and older job hunters to help New Zealand businesses benefit from our ageing population.

“Being “old” is viewed negatively, there are common misconceptions like the elderly can’t keep up with technology. The reality is we have a wealth of skills, experience and a work ethic that is second to none. Savvy businesses that realise this can gain access to an incredible workforce”, Fraser said. Brett O’Riley, CEO of the Employers and Manufacturers Association (EMA) explains that businesses who have been able to see the value of elderly workers have been able to inject knowledge and experience into their operation and benefit from skillsets that would take time and considerable effort to develop in-house. “I believe that there is a real need for New Zealand to better understand the impact of our ageing population on business. We know we will be faced with labour shortages due to a lower percentage of young people entering the workforce. The focus of Seniors@ work on raising awareness of the benefit and availability of elderly Kiwis who still have a desire to work and contribute to business, is really positive and a step in the right direction”, O’Riley said. Hamilton’s New Transport Hub The Rotokauri Transport Hub (the Hub) will provide: • a bus interchange • a rail platform for the forthcoming Hamilton to Auckland passenger rail service • and a potential pedestrian bridge over the railway to The Base.

The Hub will include a park and ride facility for rail and bus passengers, including mobility spaces, electric vehicle charging spaces, drop off and pick up zones and taxi stands. It will be an important new link for connectivity within Hamilton and to Auckland.

The service is one of the priority projects in the Hamilton to Auckland Corridor Plan and will offer two week-day return services and one Saturday service. The trip from Rotokauri to Papakura is expected to take 80 minutes.

The Hub project will also provide new and improved walking and cycling connections along most of Tasman Rd and along a new, yet-to-be-named nearby road. There will also be changes to how people use Tasman Rd and the Council is consulting on these changes this month.

In the next few months the train carriages will refurbished, stations built and upgraded and timetables, ticketing and on-board amenities finalised.

The new passenger rail service is scheduled to start in mid-2020, with Waikato Regional Council contracting KiwiRail to provide it.

THE BOYS ARE BACK IN TOWN

– Summer Bay meets Westside in Hamilton By Kip Chapman with Todd Emerson and Sophie Roberts

Television stars and proud Hamiltonians Matt Walker (Home & Away, 800 Words, Filthy Rich) and Jordan Mooney (Westside, The New Legends of Monkey, Romper Stomper) are in rehearsals for the stage show Hudson & Halls Live which opens at Clarence St Theatre at the end of July. Mooney is playing David Halls, the more extroverted of the two stars.

Described as a classic Kiwi comedy at its finest, Hudson & Halls Live follows culinary icons Peter Hudson and David Halls as they film a Christmas special in a TVNZ studio in the 1980s.

Broadway critic says

“Funniest thing this century”

The Hudson and Halls cooking show ran on television from 1976 for a decade, and they gained a massive following both here and in the United Kingdom due to their over-the-top personalities and camp humour. *

Walker, who is directing, first saw the play when he returned from working in Los Angeles.

He is thrilled to be treading the boards back in Hamilton and looking forward to performing in front of a live audience. The cast also features Simon Leary (Filthy Business, Dirty Laundry) as Peter Hudson, and stand-up comedian Melissa Lawlor as the floor manager. In true Hudson and Halls style, the entertainers bicker and drink too much. Chaos ensues and the floor manager scrambles to try to save the production.
