Hamilton Vintage & Classic Car Club

By Richard Moore, President, HVCCC

Due to overnight rain and a very cool early morning breeze the June Classic Car meet and Classics Boot sale at the Classics Museum/Juke Box Diner got off to a very slow start with very few cars in attendance by the official start time at 8am. But with no more rain in site and the sun starting to shine the cars slowly started rolling in and by 9am there was a good variety of Classics in attendance with more arriving as the morning progressed. The Classics boot sale was also in action with several old hands and one or two new sellers trying their luck. With the cooler temperatures the Juke Box Diner hot Buffett breakfast was going down a treat with many of the patrons as was hot coffee.

The usual cash prizes were awarded during the morning. The Juke Box Diner Meal Voucher for car of the day went to a very nice split window VW Combie Van and the runner up car of the day was a 1966 Chev Biscayne. Considering the weather it was another very successful Classic Car Meet at Classics Museum and we look forward to next month Meet.

Sir William Gallagher, A Hamilton Icon Prime Hamilton is proud to bring you this interview with one of Hamilton most iconic businessmen: Sir William Gallagher. In this interview Sir William talks to us about: shipwrecks, treasure hunting, Nepal, Global Warming, Lady Judi , Whangamata, and more:

When you get some spare time, what do you enjoy doing/what are your hobbies and interests outside of work/business?

A group of your friends arrive out-of-the blue to your place, what are you whipping them up for dinner at short notice?

It used to be diving – I enjoyed visiting old shipwrecks and going treasure hunting.

I’m fortunate to have the best cook in the world in my wife – with a little notice Lady Judi can deliver the best!

Over 60 years, I completed more than 11,000 dives all around the world, but that finished two years ago as unfortunately I got the bends (at the age of 75!).

We have connections from throughout the world so whenever they’re visiting we like to give the cuisine a lot of thought.

However throughout my life the family company, Gallagher, has been my passion and it continues to be.

We often host large groups, from customers and business partners to friends and sponsorship partners, at our home in Hamilton and enjoy delivering memorable occasions with good food and entertainment.

I spend my time working with our employees all over the world to take the company to the next level of success – we’ve had 80 great years as a company so far and we’re working to ensure there’s another successful 80 years ahead. Together with my wife Lady Judi, I spend approximately half of the year travelling internationally to visit Gallagher’s animal management, security and fuel systems customers and business partners. We enjoy meeting with them and it’s great to see how Gallagher technology is helping solve real problems. I record all of the places I’ve visited in a mobile app and so far I’ve spent time in 165 countries – I’m penning answers to this interview from Nepal and am off to Chennai in India next. It’s definitely not work for me, it’s my passion.

Last book you read? The last book I read was Heaven and Earth: Global Warming – The Missing Science by Ian Plimer.

Aside from Hamilton being the best city in the world, what would you consider the second best and why? There’s not many places I haven’t been throughout the world and I appreciate them all for different reasons. I have always enjoyed living in Hamilton and spending time in Whangamata but if I were to choose somewhere internationally I’d say a number of middlesized English or Scandinavian cities provide nice lifestyles. The weather in New Zealand is the best overall though and the people are another reason why we’re proud to call the Waikato region home. Lady Judi and I will be spending a lot of time celebrating Gallagher’s 80th anniversary in the places where the company has employees – Melbourne, Kansas City, Hong Kong, Nuneaton and Johannesburg. I have business networks in all of those places so really enjoy getting the chance to catch up with them and also to see what’s changed!

Italian Renaissance Garden at the Hamilton Gardens During the 15th and 16th centuries in Italy, garden design evolved alongside many other art forms and sciences. Inspired by classical ideals, Renaissance scholars endeavoured to emulate – and surpass – the ancient Greek and Roman achievements. It’s no surprise that as well as renowned thinkers and artists such as da Vinci and Michelangelo, the Renaissance period produced a new era of garden design. Like the cultures of antiquity, Renaissance designers saw art and nature as paired concepts. Art was required to imitate nature (grottoes and sculpture) and nature was required to imitate art (hedges and topiary).

Manicured evergreen plants emphasise the formal geometric design. These clipped hedges mean that green is the predominant colour throughout the year – with colour added by the placement of citrus fruit trees in terracotta pots. (You can take home a taste of the Hamilton Gardens with jars of locally-made Seville orange marmalade, sold exclusively at their Information Centre!) Water is also an essential element of the Italian garden.

Technological advancements during the Renaissance period meant that gardens could be equipped with increasingly sophisticated irrigation systems, as well as elaborate ornamental fountains. At the centre of the Italian Renaissance Garden at Hamilton Gardens is a tiered fountain crowned by a sculpture of Arethusa, created by Auckland-based Lebanese artist, Minhal Al Halabi. In Greek mythology, the goddess Artemis transformed Arethusa into a fountain in order to escape the pursuit of the river god Alpheus – a fitting connection as the fountain is fed by the waters of the Waikato River.

Prosperous families and leaders, such as the Medicis, strived to impress their visitors by commissioning grand gardens as an extension of their magnificent villas. Order and balance became the design goals, illustrating man’s power over nature. In garden design this was epitomised with the introduction of a strong central axis. Gardens became separated into symmetrical beds with the axis used to organise and unify the overall composition. Linear perspective was used to link between different portions of the garden. This can be seen in the layout of Hamilton Gardens’ Italian Renaissance Garden, which is composed in a grid of balanced square shapes.

THE LION THE WITCH AND THE

The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe a new dramatisation by Joseph Robinette of C S Lewis’ classic story can be seen at Riverlea Theatre from 6 to 20 July 2019. Performances are in the July school holidays and, while introducing this classic story to a whole new generation, for many adults it will be a trip down memory lane as they experience once again this much loved story from their youth.

This is presented by Hamilton Playbox Inc Soc Inc with kind permission of Play Bureau a community theatre production. Tickets can be purchased on line at www.iticket.co.nz or phone Riverlea Theatre 856 5450.

The Photograph is taking during rehearsal and features Abby Rollitt as “Dwarf”, Christy Park as “The White Witch” and Adam White as “Fenris Ulf” – Photography compliment of Kerry Blakeney-Williams.

Selected from a large number of auditionees, cast members come from all parts of the city, and the youngsters (the four children who find their way into Narnia, the animals and followers of Aslan) and the teenagers (the White Witch’s Army) are most ably led by experienced adult actors in the adult roles. This production is a wonderful blend of ages – from six to fifty years – including a mother and two daughters, and a father and son. This dramatization of C S Lewis’ classic story, set in the land of Narnia, faithfully recreates the magic and mystery of Aslan, the great lion, his struggle with the White Witch, and the adventures of four children who inadvertently wander from an old wardrobe into the exciting, never-to-be-forgotten Narnia.

PRIME HAMILTON HAS

2 TICKETS The intense action features duels and battles (probably too scary for under five years) as the witch is determined to keep Narnia in her possession and to end the reign of Aslan. All of the key elements and characters of the story are here in the play. This story of love, faith, courage and giving, with its triumph of good over evil is a true celebration of life.

Two ‘Aunties’ Are Taking

Carpentry Class To New Levels There’s a different kind of buzz going on in one of Wintec’s carpentry classes where two ‘aunties’ have swapped their handbags for toolbelts. The ‘aunties’ are Miriama Wara and Ataneta Barakat and they signed up to a trades training scheme to learn to build. While the younger generation in the class have got careers in their sights, it’s a different story for the two Waikato-Tainui women who have a plan to reconnect their whānau (wider family) with their ancestral land.

“So, she signed me up and got me out of the house!” laughs Miriama. “And here we are. I’ve already told other people in my age group, I’ve been a woman all my life, now it’s time to do something that the men in our lives had not been doing and we love it.”

13 April – 21 July 2019 Exclusive New Zealand venue

They realised to get their whānau back on the land, they needed accommodation to live or stay short-term. Their plan to build simple cabins on their ancestral land made sense, but who was going to build them? “We were both at home, so I said to Miriama, ‘Let’s go to school and learn to build’,” says Ataneta, who enrolled first and encouraged Miriama, who had recently lost her husband to join her.

Presented by Exhibits Development Group in cooperation with Cosprop, Ltd., London, England Images: The Phantom of the Opera (2004). Emmy Rossum as Christine. Costume design by Alexandra Byrne. The ‘aunties’, Miriama Wara and Ataneta Barakat are learning to build at Wintec to encourage their whanau back to their ancestral land.

Prime Q&A:

Hamilton Mayoralty Candidate

PAULA SOUTHGATE

What Aspects In The Coming Election Will Be The Most Relevant To Over 50’s And Retirees? What Would You Consider To Be Their Main Concerns? Retirees are often on a fixed income, and those in their 50’s are setting up for retirement. This means the rising costs of: • home maintenance • home ownership • rents • and rates can create pressure. Council must consider fairness and affordability in setting rates. The recent higher than expected increases have caused great concern. We cannot continue to burden ratepayers with continual, unexpected big increases. Seniors want and need, affordable, lifestyle and retirement housing.

At the same time the over 50’s citizens want access to good public transport that gets them where they need to go (health services and shops) and where they want to go (parks, pools, gardens, theatres, clubs and events). Our seniors deserve access to all the good things about city life that everyone else enjoys. City safety is an issue of concern, from poor lighting, uneven pavements, antisocial behaviour. Council must work to create safe local community centres and a safe central city. We have a responsibility to help all people thrive.

What Do You Enjoy Most About Local Politics? Lots! I am not new to local politics. It can be a tough job, as you can’t please everyone all of the time, but it is hugely rewarding. For 18 years I have enjoyed working alongside people to create a better city. I am proud of many things such as the Hamilton Halo project that returned the Tui to the city, and looking after our parks and green spaces. I’m also proud of leading the renewal of our swimming pools and libraries, which are well used by the over 50’s. What I enjoy most is going out into the community, talking with citizens, working to resolve issues and supporting great local groups and projects.

I love supporting our many passionate volunteers, attending community events and promoting our great city.

Can The CBD Ever Be Resurrected To Its Former Glory; In Terms Of Fuller Retailer Occupancy? Yes! The CBD can become a thriving centre once more but this will take time. The Council can only do so much.

Apartments are also being built and we recently got news about a couple of potential new hotels. The key to city centre vibrancy is people.

Developers and businesses also play a key part.

We need people to live, work and play there and then they will support shops and eateries.

The good news is that there are some good things happening, such as the redevelopment of the old Farmers and KMart buildings.

Also important is fast and effective public transport, ease of parking and good areas for pedestrians.

Victoria on the River is a fabulous river view park, with ramps and lots of seating.

Council can play a part in creating that.

Introducing the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail The Alps 2 Ocean is a spectacular journey from the Southern Alps to the East coast, over 300Km of off-road cycle trail. It is the country’s longest continuous trail and takes in some of New Zealand’s best scenery. From the highest mountain, past great lakes and rivers down to the ocean. The trail is well groomed, clearly signposted and completely achievable for anyone who is keen for an outdoor adventure. Now with the introduction of reliable and efficient E Bikes for rent, the various sections ranging from 28-55Km it can be ridden with ease. Furthermore, you can stay in some great accommodation; country lodges and glamping. Glamping is a really fun and unique option, with super comfy beds, luxury down bedding and a fantastic view. Along with treating yourself to some well-earned fantastic local food and wine when you rest up in the evenings. The best thing is, our provider will shuttle your luggage from point to point each day and even transport you if you fancy a day off along the way.

The ride can be done in 7 to 9 days. It has manageable distances each day, is not technical and is one of NZ’s Great Rides. The quality of the track build throughout is really good meaning that you can ride this on all sorts of bikes, hardtails, E bikes or even a Penny Farthing (apparently it has been done!). If you love riding with your friends, it is hard to beat this multi-day ride, journeying from the mountains to the coast and experiencing that feeling of achievement together when you reach the end!

Jaguar’s business was founded as the Swallow Sidecar Company in 1922, by two motorcycle enthusiasts, William Lyons and William Walmsley, originally making motorcycle sidecars before developing bodies for passenger cars. Under the ownership of S. S. Cars Limited the business extended to complete cars made in association with Standard Motor Co, many bearing Jaguar as a model name. The company’s name was changed from S. S. Cars to Jaguar Cars in 1945. Jaguar first appeared in September 1935 as a model name on an SS 2½ litre sports saloon. A matching open two seater sports model with a 3½ litre engine was named SS Jaguar 100. Jaguar made its name by producing a series of successful eye-catching sports cars, the: • Jaguar XK120 (1948-54) • Jaguar XK150 (1957-61) • Jaguar XK140 (1954-57) • and Jaguar E-Type (1961-75) all embodying Lyons’ mantra of “value for money”.

The sports cars were successful in international motorsport, a path followed in the 1950s to prove the engineering integrity of the company’s products. Jaguar’s sales slogan for years was “Grace, Space, Pace”. Two of the proudest moments in Jaguar’s long history in motor sport involved winning the Le Mans 24 hours race, firstly in 1951 and again in 1953. In 1950, Jaguar agreed to lease from the Ministry of Supply the Daimler Shadow 2 factory in Browns Lane, Allesley, Coventry.

Which at the time was being used by The Daimler Company Limited and moved to the new site from Foleshill over the next 12 months. Jaguar purchased Daimler – not to be confused with Daimler-Benz or Daimler AG – in 1960 from BSA. From the late 1960s, Jaguar used the Daimler marque as a brand name for their most luxurious saloons. Prime Walks

This Edition: AJ SEELEY GULLY

By Ceana Priest

This ecological gem in the middle of Hamilton was once a barren piece of land with donkeys grazing on it.

This is the perfect spot to get off the beaten track and explore a natural setting while knowing the car is only a five minute walk away.

Today, this urban gully is a leafy oasis of native and exotic trees with towering California redwoods surrounded by beautiful native kahikatea, kānuka, mānuka and kauri.

From Armagh Street, steps lead down to the small stream and along the way try and imagine how it once looked as a weedy paddock with donkeys Abigail, Ebenezer, Jessica and Rebecca happily grazing.

Explorers will love poking around in the dirt and peering into the small stream.

If you are planning on spending some time exploring, I’d recommend you bring bug spray. There are some active biters!

The 2.2 hectare reserve was gifted to the city by Dr. Alwyn J. Seeley in 2004 and it was his efforts for more than six decades that transformed the bare land into a retreat for tui and plants. Hamilton City Council, school students and volunteers have continued his work by planting hundreds of native trees and shrubs.

Would you like to become involved? The A J Seeley Gully Reserve Restoration group meets regularly to remove weeds, maintain the tracks and do restoration planting. For more information and dates visit www.visithamilton.co.nz

FACILITIES: No toilets. WALKING:

Allow 30 min return (approximately 1km) from car park.

ACCESSIBILITY:

This walk has an easy gradient but due to the steps and dirt paths it is only suitable for walking. Dogs are welcome on leads.

HOW TO GET THERE: The best parking is at

the end of Armagh Street, off Argyle Street and Te Aroha Street. Or, there is limited parking on Whyte Street.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Hi I’m Ceana of OUTDOOR KID, a Hamilton mum raising a little explorer called Finn who adores bugs and splashing in forest streams. I struggled to find accessible adventures so I have published the Outdoor Kid guidebooks, for families to discover hidden gems from urban gullies to bike parks. Let’s inspire the next generation of explorers! CONTACT: hello@outdoorkid.co.nz, www.outdoorkid.co.nz

Humbly Yours

By Christine Packer

Humble Gifts & Collectibles truly is the little shop of colours.

Colour creates mood, atmosphere and the essence of life; everyone has their favourite colours.

Just looking at the bands of colour stripes painted on the exterior and you have to guess that colour features inside too amongst the collection of stock.

These are the ones we feel comfortable wearing. They will be the colours that pop out to us among a selection of numerous colours.

Look at how many reds there are, the different blues or greens.

They will be the colours we want to surround ourselves with no matter what the latest trend may be trying to sell us. Amongst the grey, white, beige and black most of us will want to add a little or large zing of colour. Compatible colours work together even when taken from opposite sides of the colour spectrum, like purple and green or yellow and blue. If the hues and tints (colour saturation) are the same there can be a stunning effect achieved.

For instance an orangey red and an olive green complement each other (both have a yellow base). Have fun placing colours next to each other and your eye will tell you what looks good together. Even amongst the colourless items like cut glass and crystal the light reflects any colour around them and that is their charm. Place a fruit salad in a crystal bowl and the effect is beautiful. Place an antique auroa Borealis crystal necklace around your neck and you glow in its aura of rainbow colours. Have you noticed how humans can mess up colour sometimes but in nature there is never a mistake.

Hellebores, known as ‘’Winter roses” or even “Christmas roses” is a plant that makes its debut during the cold months. These flowering beauties can start flowering from late May through to late July. Hellebores are ideal for growing in shady spots or under trees, preferring good drainage. Hellebores also enjoy soil of higher pH, lime rather than acidic soils although as long as there is relatively neutral pH you can grow hellebores with Rhododendrons. In areas that have heavy clays, one needs to be a lot more careful to provide the necessary drainage. Planting in raised beds is one helpful solution or planting under trees is another. Hellebores enjoy being mulched, which has many benefits – it keeps the plant moist and cool over the Summer, is a great source of organic material and is also really good at keeping the weeds down. The best time to apply mulch is generally in the Spring at the time when the old leaves are cut off just as the flower buds are appearing.

LILY

CAMELOT

A star in Hellebore collection, double white detailed with luscious raspberry veiling.

A star in the gold collection. This is a lovely hybrid species from Germany. The compact pink buds open to creamy pink blooms flowering all winter.

Lily’s flowers resemble water lilies and bloom from autumn until late winter. The stems are strong and upright (35-40cm tall), the leaves are leathery and deep green. Mature flowers make for a gorgeous floral display. When flowering has finished it is advisable to trim back. A hardy plant that does best when positioned in part shade.

The long lasting flowers face outwards above handsome, rich green foliage on red stems. Camelot is a hardy plant that prefers part shade and well-drained soil.

JACOB

JASPER

A star in the prestigious gold collection. Jasper features beautiful pure white flowers from late Autumn through Winter.

A star in the gold collection. Jasper has cupped upward facing bright white flowers which dazzle with a brightness highlighted by a delicate yellow centre and rich dark green foliage.

Large, outfacing, slightly fragrant, single, pure white flowers appear earlier than most. Flowers gradually age to a light green and in cooler temperatures are tinted pink.

Blooming for a long period over Winter and produces a large number of flowers.

In recent years, breeding programmes have produced some stunning new hybrids.

Avoid any pruning other than to remove dead or blemished leaves in spring. A hardy plant that is best positioned in part shade.

Here are some of our favourite newer varieties which you can find at Palmers Hamilton now:

Ride on NZ’s only genuine WWII DUKW’S! The DUKW, more affectionately known as ‘Ducks’, were US military vehicles that were born due to necessity. The US were having trouble supplying their troops. Their large supply ships unable to get close to the shore meant it became an arduous task to load the supplies onto smaller boats, taking them into shore and then unloading them again onto trucks to take to the troops. To solve this the military Generals approached an America’s Cup yacht designer named Rod Stevens and a talented and well known engineer named Palmer Putnam. These two men were tasked with transforming a US army truck known as a GMC deuce and a half into something that could leave the supply ships and easily take supplies all the way to the troops. The Ducks did amazing work during the war shipping over 1 million tonnes of mixed supplies into the troops on the front lines like no military had ever seen before. The Ducks were used extensively in the Pacific and even later in the war were used for landings including the D Day and Normandy landings among others. 24

From The Minister For Seniors

Tracey Martin I was really pleased to be able to speak at the Grey Power AGM and announce three new initiatives for seniors.

Two of them sit in other Ministers’ portfolios – ACC and Digital Services. These are about new money for: 1. Digital Literacy Training for those seniors who need a bit more help with changing technology; 2. and allowing older people who are still working and get injured to receive both NZ Superannuation or the Veteran’s Pension and ACC weekly payments for up to two years.

The research showed that seniors wanted a way of seeing where discounts were available when they were out – and they suggested a mobile phone app may be a good way of doing this. Our changes are about addressing all of this – and ultimately getting more discounts for people. A key goal of what we’re doing in enhancing the card is to help seniors on fixed incomes to stretch their dollar further so they can buy the services and products they need.

This allows an injured person’s financial situation to more closely reflect their income.

So the SuperGold website, which hasn’t been updated for six years, will be upgraded and made easier to use.

That’s only fair – especially as we are going to increasingly need older people to stay in paid work if they want to.

A new SuperGold app, linked to the website, will also be created to help show seniors where the card can be used when they are out.

Both of those changes are targeted at certain groups of senior citizens.

These will be launched before the end of 2019.

The big announcement, though, will benefit every one of you – all three-quarters of a million SuperGold Card holders. Having received the delegation for the Card earlier this year, the Wellbeing Budget contained $7.7 million extra to upgrade and enhance the SuperGold Card and stop its neglect. We knew New Zealand’s over 65s really appreciate the SuperGold Card and research the Office for Seniors did last year showed that the travel concessions and shopping discounts were particularly valued. The reality is, however, it’s been neglected for several years and it’s harder and harder for people to know where they can use the card.

Businesses – currently there are more than 9,300 businesses with around 14,000 outlets offering SuperGold discounts – will also be able to interact with the website better and they will also be provided with standard promotions like posters so people can see where they can get discounts. The opportunity that doing these things and revitalising the card creates, is to find more discounts. There will be one million people over 65 within the next decade, which presents a very large consumer group. I want to talk to – and hear from – businesses who want to access and help older New Zealanders. I’m looking forward to updating you on where we’ve got to before too long.

Japan Autumn Colours With Travelworks ~ Golden Compass Tours 04-16 November 2019 If you have ever considered travelling to Japan, our 12-night Autumn tour is full of diversity and autumn is a great season to visit the country, with fewer crowds and much beauty. We guarantee the ‘Japan effect’ is a lasting one. A message from our Program Leader “I get great pleasure from sharing the delight of our tour participants as they discover things they had not anticipated before they arrived in Japan. They are amazed by all the contrasts, how safe and clean it is and are warmed by the politeness, graciousness and kindness of the Japanese people they meet. Also, the array of traditional crafts made by true artisans, the variety of culture and depth of history, the range of the cuisine, the attention to detail, the skilful use of space and efficiency of the cities, and of course – Japan’s beauty! The colours of Autumn are magnificent and are a wonderful backdrop for many historic buildings and gardens throughout the country. The cherry blossom season is also a breathtaking sight and known the world over. These are the very things that charmed me when I first visited more than forty years ago and which drew me back to live for many years. I feel as though the insights and knowledge I pass on ensure that participants gain full value from our tours and always leave with exceeded expectations, many keen to return. So come and join our small group and experience an intriguing Japan in a very personal way.” Itchiku Kubota Art Museum

This month focus: FRANKTON • Separated by land full of manuka and gorse, Frankton wasn’t always just another suburb of Hamilton. • Thomas and Mary Jolly along with their children Francis (Frank) and Edith left England and travelled to New Zealand on the ship ‘Ida Zeigler’ in 1867. • They settled in the Waikato and brought 300 acres of Major Jackson Keddell’s land, they named the area Frankton after their son. • When the railways department was planning the route from Auckland to Wellington the Jollys offered them access through the farm. • The first train arrived from Auckland on 17 December 1877 and was met with a crowd of around 300 at the station in Frankton. • Later that day subdivisions of land were put up for sale near the new railway line. • The land was peaty and lowlying which caused it to be wetter and in need of draining. • Sections were sold cheaply and most commonly to wage earners and labourers. • With over eighty trains arriving per day by 1910 Frankton was firmly established as a railways town. • Only four houses stood in 1902 but this increased to seventy in only four years.

• Frankton started to become more self-sufficient as the town grew and a sense of community came with the opening of local businesses. • In 1913 the population reached 1000 and Frankton was proclaimed a borough with its own council. • Frankton residents had not taken gas nor installed gas appliances so the council saw this as an opportunity to invest in electricity. • Frankton was lit up for the first time in April 1913 and residents soon became enthused by their cleaner and more efficient power source. • Hamilton wanted their electricity so Frankton was granted permission to take powerlines over the boundary to serve Hamilton customers. • Frankton council received a petition from residents proposing an amalgamation with Hamilton Borough in 1916. • Frankton people wanted Hamilton’s sewage scheme, as drainage was difficult in the low lying land, and also access to other services. • Frankton council went into negotiations with Hamilton council to ensure Frankton interests would be looked after. • A poll was taken in Frankton May 1916 and after they won by just 24 votes the amalgamation took effect the following year on April 1st.

Get Your Free Flu Shot Today Did you know that you could still be infected with the flu even if you don’t feel sick or show symptoms? And you could pass on the virus to others. Severe influenza can lead to a stay in hospital which may in turn increase frailty and loss of independence for older people. The vaccine immunisation is the best protection against influenza. It naturally boosts your immune system to fight the virus when it attacks. Influenza is not the same as a cold. It is a more serious disease that can also make other existing medical conditions worse. Influenza immunisation is especially important for people aged 65 years and over. 28

People aged over 65 experience up to 91 percent of flu-related deaths and around 70 percent of flu-related hospital stays. Free flu shots are available for people 65 and over from general practices and many community pharmacies. The influenza vaccine is a prescription medicine. Talk to your doctor, nurse or pharmacist about the benefits and possible risks. And, if you’re aged between 65 and 80 years old, ask if you’re also eligible for the free shingles immunisation. Check out www.fightflu.co.nz to find out whether you qualify for free flu immunisation or call 0800 IMMUNE (0800 466 863).

Changes For Older New Zealanders People aged over 65 will be able to join KiwiSaver under changes that come into effect from next month. Other changes will be put into place from 2020.

From 1 July 2019 the KiwiSaver scheme will be open to people of all ages – giving people 65 and over the ability to join KiwiSaver.

From 1 April 2020 KiwiSaver members impacted by the five-year lock in period can elect to opt out of this lock in period any time after they reach the age of eligibility for NZ Super.

The changes will also remove the lock-in period that required people over 60 to remain in the scheme for five years before withdrawing their money.

However, this means you won’t be eligible for compulsory employer contributions or the government contribution.

At the moment, people over 65 can’t join KiwiSaver or move to a new scheme, although you can continue to contribute to their accounts if you are already a member.

For more information about KiwiSaver go to www.kiwisaver.govt.nz or phone 0800 549 472.

If you joined after the age of 60, you still have to wait five years before withdrawing their money.
