Terrific Topp Twins It is with great pleasure Prime brings you this Topp Twins interview. We spoke with one half of the dynamic duo Jools Topp about: their childhood, how they got into entertainment, bizarre food, their pets, the future, kiwi cooking, celebrity guest for dinner, and much more... WHERE WERE YOU BORN AND RAISED AND WHERE DO YOU CONSIDER YOUR HOME TOWN?
DO YOU THINK INSECTS WILL BECOME PART OF THE KIWI CULINARY EXPERIENCE IN THE NEAR FUTURE?
Huntly. Huntly is our home town. Huntly was good to us. We had a lovely childhood.
New Zealand has become so open to food. When I was growing up, I don’t think we ever had anything that had chilli in it. Ever.
We lived in a small place, North west of Huntly called Ruawaro and that was on the Farm. We spent a lot of time in Huntly, went to Huntly College. My Brother and our Mum had a florist shop, so we had a long association with that town and it’s a great little town.
HOW DID IT COME TO BE THAT YOU GOT IN TO ENTERTAINMENT AS AN OCCUPATION? Well, I think you can blame our brother for that, because what happened was, when he was about 12 or 13, we were about 9 or 11. He use to mow the lawns at the neighbours and he would get a bit of pocket money. And what happened is, I don’t know why he did it but he came home one day and he had bought us a little guitar and a little book that was titled “Play in a day”. We had our first guitar and that book and never looked back since. It was a wonderful undertaking of a magical brother that said “Hey, you want to play the guitar and sing songs” and we took to it like ducks to water. Honestly when we started that we never really thought we’d be entertainers but certainly a defining moment in our lives. I think the other thing that inspired us, we use to go up the road and listen to the neighbours wind up gramophone. It was the only music, other than the stuff we wrote or had at home and we would listen to that for hours and hours and hours. We spent hours looking through all the old 78s and we had to be really careful with them because they could break. That’s when we found all the yodelling records and Linda said “I want to learn to yodel”. I guess we stumbled upon these great things. My brother gave us the guitar, my mother let us go and play the music anytime we wanted to. I think it just became a really big part of our life. It was a very insular, particular type of music that we were listening to. Mostly Australians, Shirley Tom and the great yodellers that were around, and there were a few good ole New Zealanders, Dusty Spital, The Tumbleweeds and all those sort of guys, making music in their garages.
BASED ON YOUR NEW BOOK, A Culinary Journey With The Topp Twins, WHAT ARE SOME OF THE ITEMS OF FOOD YOU WERE MOST SURPRISED AT EATING? SOMETHING YOU HADN’T TRIED BEFORE? Deep fried grasshoppers and peanut sauce wrapped in a red cabbage leaf. That was basically to disguise it so you couldn’t see it was a grasshopper when you ate it, I think. But what is interesting is that over half the countries in the world eat insects. Lots of things are crunchy and fried. Someone pointed out to us, actually, it was a lady who supplies food for the Wild Food Festival in the South Island. If you think about it, a shrimp is very much like an insect of the sea. We think nothing of eating that but if look at that swimming around in the ocean with its little legs, it’s very insect like, we don’t really have a problem with it. 4
Now, it’s so abundant, there are all sorts of amazing ingredients and food that we’ll try. Looking at ways of feeding the world that’s cheap, viable and nutritious. I think at some point in time, our menus will once again change. I think more young people are choosing different options. They’re choosing to become vegetarians or vegans. The world is changing about the politics of what we eat.
IN GENERAL, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE TYPICAL KIWI HOME COOKING? If I were to describe it now, I’d say adventurous. When we were growing up, it honestly was meat and three veggies. It was about as unadventurous as you could get, that was our Mum and Dads generation. I think what’s happened is, my Dad’s 90 and my Mum’s 88 and they’ve never been out of the country, they had no other taste sensations or explosions that can be experienced overseas. There was a time when you did your big OE [overseas experience], my generation, everybody did their OE in London or Hong Kong or where ever. We wanted to go and see the world. They had a huge influx of different foods and they came back and said “I want to cook that when I come home” and suddenly they realised all those ingredients were available down at the Asian markets, that they had been completely unaware of before they went overseas. Our home cooking now is adventurous. Kiwis are very wrapped up in food, in a big way.
WHICH CELEBRITY WOULD YOU INVITE FOR DINNER AND WHAT WOULD YOU COOK FOR THEM? That’s tricky… umm I’d probably have Jacinda [Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern] over. Jacinda and family. Bring the baby, we wouldn’t care if she cries. I would probably make a really beautiful Thai green chicken curry. I think people who are a bit scared of curry, should go for a Thai curry. A Thai curry, rather than being hot, is really aromatic. Your pallet gets a sense of wanting to try it again. You have to have a crack at it, to see what you like, mild, medium or hot, and you can’t do that unless you try it.
WHAT PETS DO YOU OWN? Way too many. I’ve got the usual, cats, dogs, horses and 3 cows. Love my cows, they’re really sweet. We grew up on a farm so it’s pretty hard to let that go. We’re dairy farmers daughters and so the farm has had a great pull.
WHAT BREED OF DOGS? Oh you know, just little towney dogs on a farm they are, although one of them loves the cows. I’ve got a cavalier king Charles spaniel, something the Queen would be seen out walking, although she’s a bit of a corgi fan isn’t she. The other one is a poodle crossed with a cavalier king Charles. He’s really adorable little dog with a great temperament.
WHAT WOULD BE YOUR MESSAGE TO OUR PRIME READERS? Linda and me turned 60 this year and honestly it still feels like we’re 20. We defy the idea of age. There’s a concept that you change and you get old and you can’t do things. Obviously, physically sometimes I can’t pick up a 44 gallon drum of oil any more but I guess in some ways the concept of aging is man made and as my Mum says “You’re as young as you feel”. There’s a positiveness about aging because we have some experience. We have some wisdom of what life is like. Hang out with young people, that’s cool. Young people are cool. They’re even more serious than us old people now. We grew up in a time with no mobile phones, no computers. Young people now have constant digital object in their hands, they have to make sure the world is ok or their friends are ok. There’s a constant sort of worry for them. Young people today have a big job on their hands, to save the planet. I think that we as the older generation still have to stand up and be proud of that as well. We have to leave our planet for the next generation so we still have a big responsibility and we have to be involved with young people now. Otherwise we have this “them and us mentality”.

Prime Walks
Papamoa Hills
The Papamoa Hills Regional Park is a hiker’s paradise. Explore the park’s cultural heritage and walk around former pa sites, or challenge yourself to reach the 224m-high summit and enjoy breath-taking views.
Seven pa sites (where Papamoa’s original Māori inhabitants lived) can be found in these hills, and the terracing they created around these pa can quite clearly be seen.
This 135ha property overlooks the sprawling plains of Papamoa below and out to the Pacific Ocean, offering breath-taking views right along our coastline from Mount Manganui to Whakatane.
The regional park was formed in 2003 to help protect the site’s cultural heritage (which may date back as far as 1650AD or even earlier) and there are over 2000 archaeological features found here.
If you climb right to the top you’ll be standing 224m above sea level. It’ll take you about 45 minutes to complete this steep walk from the carpark to the trig station but the views are definitely worth the effort. In addition to this main track, there are several other trails throughout the park where you can enjoy different views and explore the archaeological treasures which lie here.
Over 50,000 native plants have been planted across these hills in recent years by the local regional council for you to enjoy. Entry to the Papamoa Hills is at the end of Poplar Lane off SH2 between Papamoa and Te Puke. More information about the different walking trails can be found on a display board at the Poplar Lane carpark. Open daily from 6.30am until 7pm in winter and until 9pm in summer.

YOU MUST BE JOKING In Memoriam Seeing her friend Sally wearing a new locket, Meg asks if there is a memento of some sort inside. “Yes,” says Sally, “a lock of my "husband’s hair.” “But Larry’s still alive.” “I know, but his hair is gone.”
Teeth Cleaning The sight of my mother cleaning her dentures fascinated my young son. He sat riveted as she carefully took them out, brushed and rinsed them, and then popped them back in. “Cool, Grandma!” he said. “Now take off your arm.”
Back In Time For her 40th birthday, my wife said, “I’d love to be ten again.” So that Saturday, we had a heaping stack of chocolate-chip pancakes, her favourite childhood breakfast. Then we hit the playground and a merry-goround. We finished the day with a banana split. “So how did you enjoy being a kid for a day?” I asked. “Great,” she said. “But when I said I wanted to be ten again, I meant my dress size.”

HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE THE TERM: PSYCHIC MEDIUM? My idea of Psychic Medium is bringing information through from the spirit on the other side and seeing things that have not happened yet. I see myself as the switch board operator that brings in the connections to pass on.
WHAT IS ABSENT HEALING? When I do Absent Healing people will send a photo or just a name. I hold the photo or say the name as both the photo and name have a vibration and sending the universal energy of the healing intent and also I am a Reiki Master teacher and I also put the ancient reiki symbols over the photo and name.
You will have the opportunity to embark on a remarkable journey of learning with me. I will help you to navigate through the deep waters of loss and grief, helping you to break down the patterns of your emotions which have prevented you from reaching your highest self. NOW IS THE TIME TO GET YOUR INFLUENZA VACCINATION! Getting a vaccination is easy and convenient at your local Life Pharmacy Tauranga Crossing. You could come in contact with influenza at any time.
Get Your Free Flu Shot Today Did you know that you could still be infected with the flu even if you don’t feel sick or show symptoms? And you could pass on the virus to others. Severe influenza can lead to a stay in hospital which may in turn increase frailty and loss of independence for older people. The vaccine immunisation is the best protection against influenza. It naturally boosts your immune system to fight the virus when it attacks. Influenza is not the same as a cold. It is a more serious disease that can also make other existing medical conditions worse. Influenza immunisation is especially important for people aged 65 years and over. 16
People aged over 65 experience up to 91 percent of flu-related deaths and around 70 percent of flu-related hospital stays. Free flu shots are available for people 65 and over from general practices and many community pharmacies. The influenza vaccine is a prescription medicine. Talk to your doctor, nurse or pharmacist about the benefits and possible risks. And, if you’re aged between 65 and 80 years old, ask if you’re also eligible for the free shingles immunisation. Check out www.fightflu.co.nz to find out whether you qualify for free flu immunisation or call 0800 IMMUNE (0800 466 863).
Around one in four New Zealanders are infected with influenza each year. Don’t assume you are immune. Many people won’t feel sick at all, but can still pass it on to others. Influenza can be anywhere. Contact with the influenza virus is almost unavoidable, and while contact does not necessarily mean infection, it does mean that you are never far from the possibility of catching influenza. Tauranga Writer, Iain Robert Moore’s First Novel William Castle Davis is one of the 750,000 kiwi ‘baby-boomers’. Please call him Bill, everyone else does.
He chose to share his life with a small cast of characters who knew him as well as he had allowed.
Tauranga writer, Iain Robert Moore’s first novel, ‘Early Arrival at Gate One’ is a shared glimpse into the life of this ordinary man, who made the difficult and fraught decision to examine his past, driven by a challenging future.
Age and the challenge that lay in wait finally enabled the man to find himself after a lifetime of keeping his feelings hidden…like so many kiwi men.
He was 72 when he started to look back. As he did so, he began to realise how little he knew of himself, and those closest to him knew even less, because he had never let them in. As the pages wrote themselves, and the years unfolded, he became a man taking stock of his life, the highs, lows, successes and failures.
Now he can finally open up to those closest to him. ‘Early Arrival at Gate One’ is simply Bill’s journey; one man’s honest and unvarnished view of his life in an effort to find closure, and perhaps acceptance of himself. He finally found that closure… but it is up to the reader to decide for themselves just what ‘closure’ really means. ‘Early Arrival at Gate One’ – Available as both paperback at US13.99 plus courier and ebook for kindle at $US3.99 plus download from Amazon books. This month focus: TAURANGA • Tauranga is the fifth largest urban area in New Zealand. • The population of Tauranga is over 130,000. • Tauranga dates from the establishment of a Church Missionary Society mission at Te Papa, as it was then known, in the 1830s. • During the wars of the 1860s the government established two redoubts (fortifications) there. • The original mission house, The Elms, still stands, as do the remains of the Monmouth redoubt. • From the 1910s, as dairying developed in neighbouring districts, the population grew.
Gamble & Stone 1257 Amohia Street (beside Godfreys), Rotorua P 07 353 7585 E gamblestone407@gmail.com www.gamblestone.nz
• It was settled by Māori late in the 13th century and by Europeans in the early 19th century and was constituted as a city in 1963. • At 9 am on Friday 23 June 1826 the Herald was the first European ship to enter Tauranga Harbour.
• The city extends over an area of 168 square kilometres (65 sq mi), and encompasses the communities of Bellevue, Bethlehem, Brookfield, Gate Pa, Greerton, Hairini, Judea, Kairua, Matapihi, Matua, Maungatapu, Motuopuhi Island (Rat Island), Motuotau Island, Moturiki Island, Mount Maunganui, Ohauiti, Omanawa, Oropi, Otumoetai, Papamoa, Papamoa Beach, Parkvale, Poike, Pyes Pa, Tauranga Central, Tauranga South, Tauriko, Te Puna, Waikareao Estuary, Waitao, Welcome Bay. • The Port of Tauranga is New Zealand’s largest port in terms of gross export tonnage and efficiency. • The first permanent non-Māori trader was James Farrow, who travelled to Tauranga in 1829, obtaining flax fibre for Australian merchants in exchange for muskets and gunpowder. • Farrow acquired a land area of 2,000 square metres (½ acre) on 10 January 1838 at Otumoetai Pā from the chiefs Tupaea, Tangimoana and Te Omanu, the earliest authenticated land purchase in the Bay of Plenty.

Singing Is Good For Your Health And Wellbeing Submitted by Betty Geiser, Oriana Singers
Group singing, for those who have done so, is the most exhilarating and transformative of all. Physical benefits include: improved breathing, speech, posture, circulation; reduced pain levels whilst singing, an increased sense of well-being and improved immunity levels.
Choral singing can maintain and improve brain function as it involves education and learning, keeps the mind active and gives a sense of achievement, it counteracts the decline of cognitive functions.
Oriana Singers repertoire is varied, has wide appeal and changes throughout the year.
We at the ORIANA SINGERS are a mixed voice (SATB) community choir with members from the greater Tauranga area – Omokoroa to Pyes Pa to Papamoa.
Works ranging from traditional choral pieces to Jazz and popular pieces, as well as spirituals and folk songs are chosen by our musical director, who launches anonymous surveys to the choir members to make sure there is something for everyone.
The choir has a maximum of 50 members who come from a variety of musical backgrounds, with some having never sung in a choir before, to those who have sung in choirs for over twenty years.
Oriana Singers seek to support young musicians in the community and will often invite them to feature in their concerts.
Only half of the members read music, the rest learn by ear and with the aid of practice CDs.

From The Minister For Seniors
Tracey Martin I was really pleased to be able to speak at the Grey Power AGM and announce three new initiatives for seniors.
Two of them sit in other Ministers’ portfolios – ACC and Digital Services. These are about new money for: 1. Digital Literacy Training for those seniors who need a bit more help with changing technology; 2. and allowing older people who are still working and get injured to receive both NZ Superannuation or the Veteran’s Pension and ACC weekly payments for up to two years.
Our changes are about addressing all of this – and ultimately getting more discounts for people. A key goal of what we’re doing in enhancing the card is to help seniors on fixed incomes to stretch their dollar further so they can buy the services and products they need.
This allows an injured person’s financial situation to more closely reflect their income.
So the SuperGold website, which hasn’t been updated for six years, will be upgraded and made easier to use.
That’s only fair – especially as we are going to increasingly need older people to stay in paid work if they want to.
A new SuperGold app, linked to the website, will also be created to help show seniors where the card can be used when they are out.
Both of those changes are targeted at certain groups of senior citizens.
These will be launched before the end of 2019.
The big announcement, though, will benefit every one of you – all three-quarters of a million SuperGold Card holders. Having received the delegation for the Card earlier this year, the Wellbeing Budget contained $7.7 million extra to upgrade and enhance the SuperGold Card and stop its neglect. We knew New Zealand’s over 65s really appreciate the SuperGold Card and research the Office for Seniors did last year showed that the travel concessions and shopping discounts were particularly valued. The reality is, however, it’s been neglected for several years and it’s harder and harder for people to know where they can use the card.
EXPERT ADVICE - BEST PRICE TAURANGA’S NEWEST BEDDING STORE FEATURING NZ’S BIGGEST BRANDS AT INDEPENDENT LOW PRICES What our customers are saying... “ ...the best service I’ve experienced in a long time” “...friendly, knowledgeable and nothing is to much trouble”
“SleepMode was the last store we visited and we were pleasantly surprised by the friendly, personal and professional service and advice...”
21 PURIRI ST, MT MAUNGANUI, 07-575-3376 22
The research showed that seniors wanted a way of seeing where discounts were available when they were out – and they suggested a mobile phone app may be a good way of doing this.
Businesses – currently there are more than 9,300 businesses with around 14,000 outlets offering SuperGold discounts – will also be able to interact with the website better and they will also be provided with standard promotions like posters so people can see where they can get discounts. The opportunity that doing these things and revitalising the card creates, is to find more discounts. There will be one million people over 65 within the next decade, which presents a very large consumer group. I want to talk to – and hear from – businesses who want to access and help older New Zealanders. I’m looking forward to updating you on where we’ve got to before too long.

Vertigo Clinic – for the assessment and treatment of dizziness, vertigo and balance disorders.
What Is Vestibular Rehabilitation?
The Vestibular System is our body’s balance system. If damaged by disease or injury, the brain can no longer rely on it for accurate information about equilibrium and motion, often resulting in dizziness, vertigo, balance problems, and other symptoms. Vestibular Rehabilitation (VR) can retrain the brain to recognize and process signals from the vestibular system in coordination with our other balance sensors (vision and proprioception), minimising dizziness and improving balance. VR also includes treatment for vertigo caused by BPPV (Positional Vertigo).
JUSTINE DRUMMOND – owner of the Vertigo Clinic and Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapist Justine is a Physiotherapist and Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapist. She graduated from Auckland University of Technology (AUT) in 2003 with a Bachelor of Health Science (Physiotherapy). Justine began her career at Middlemore Hospital in Auckland and has been working in Tauranga since 2007. She has extensive experience working with people who have experienced brain injuries, and has a keen interest in vestibular rehabilitation. She has completed a number of post-graduate courses in the field of Vestibular Rehabilitation and Cervicogenic Dizziness. Justine is a member of the New Zealand Society for Balance Dizziness and Vertigo. CONTACT: Justine on 021 999 963 or justine@vertigoclinic.co.nz, or Gemma on 027 544 2732 or gemma@vertigoclinic.co.nz to discuss an appointment.

Varicose Veins - Not Just Vanity Dr Anuya Deshpande, Tauranga, Papamoa-based varicose vein doctor
Varicose veins are not just a cosmetic issue, but also cause medical problems which affect overall health. Those familiar ropey veins occur when superficial veins in the legs become swollen and tortuous as the valves within the veins pull apart and stop functioning. This leads to chronic back-flow and affects the blood flow and skin in the affected area.
Varicose veins can lead to aching, cramping, restless and/or swollen legs, as well as itchy patches known as varicose eczema and darker pink or brown patches of skin discolouration. Eventually the skin in the area of the varicose veins can break down and become ulcerated. Varicose ulcers often don’t heal unless the underlying varicose veins are treated. Modern day treatments for varicose veins do not require general anesthesia, long painful recovery periods or surgical scars. Doctors trained in the diagnosis and treatment of vein disease are known as phlebologists, and use ultrasound to diagnose map and treat varicose veins. Abnormal veins can be closed using either heat or laser ablation (closing internally) and/or injections of a chemical which causes them to shrink and be reabsorbed. Treatments are performed under local anaesthetic and patients walk in and walk out. Most patients find that after a couple of weeks in compression tights the condition of their legs improve, with a few followups to complete the treatment, says Dr Anuya Deshpande – who treats varicose veins at clincs in Tauranga and Papamoa.
Modern Day Traditional Barber Shop PENSIONS SPECIALS Monday, Tuesday Wednesday Haircuts for the whole family. We are a no appointment cutting bar/barber. Locally owned and operated by Carolyn and Carl Redshaw for nearly 25 years.
Varicose veins before and 3 months after ultrasound guided treatment
“Ultrasound-guided treatments of varicose veins have improved the lives of hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people. It is satisfying seeing improvements in patients' legs, but seeing the huge improvements in their confidence and quality of life is even better.” Dr Anuya Deshpande 0800 DR ANUYA (0800 372 689) info@doctoranuya.nz www.doctoranuya.nz

Winter Colour – Hellebores In the depths of Winter, finding plants to colour your garden can be difficult. Hellebores, known as ‘’Winter roses” or even “Christmas roses” is a plant that makes its debut during the cold months. These flowering beauties can start flowering from late May through to late July. Hellebores are ideal for growing in shady spots or under trees, preferring good drainage. Hellebores also enjoy soil of higher pH, lime rather than acidic soils although as long as there is relatively neutral pH you can grow hellebores with Rhododendrons. In areas that have heavy clays, one needs to be a lot more careful to provide the necessary drainage. Planting in raised beds is one helpful solution or planting under trees is another. Hellebores enjoy being mulched, which has many benefits – it keeps the plant moist and cool over the Summer, is a great source of organic material and is also really good at keeping the weeds down. The best time to apply mulch is generally in the Spring at the time when the old leaves are cut off just as the flower buds are appearing. In recent years, breeding programmes have produced some stunning new hybrids. Here are some of our favourite newer varieties which you can find at Palmers now:
28
LILY
CAMELOT
A star in Hellebore collection, double white detailed with luscious raspberry veiling.
A star in the gold collection. This is a lovely hybrid species from Germany. The compact pink buds open to creamy pink blooms flowering all winter.
Lily’s flowers resemble water lilies and bloom from autumn until late winter. The stems are strong and upright (35-40cm tall), the leaves are leathery and deep green. Mature flowers make for a gorgeous floral display. When flowering has finished it is advisable to trim back. A hardy plant that does best when positioned in part shade.
The long lasting flowers face outwards above handsome, rich green foliage on red stems. Camelot is a hardy plant that prefers part shade and well-drained soil.
JACOB
JASPER
A star in the prestigious gold collection. Jasper features beautiful pure white flowers from late Autumn through Winter.
A star in the gold collection. Jasper has cupped upward facing bright white flowers which dazzle with a brightness highlighted by a delicate yellow centre and rich dark green foliage.
Large, outfacing, slightly fragrant, single, pure white flowers appear earlier than most. Flowers gradually age to a light green and in cooler temperatures are tinted pink. Avoid any pruning other than to remove dead or blemished leaves in spring. A hardy plant that is best positioned in part shade. www.palmers.co.nz
Blooming for a long period over Winter and produces a large number of flowers. Trim when finished flowering. A hardy plant that likes to be positioned in part shade.

Changes For Older New Zealanders People aged over 65 will be able to join KiwiSaver under changes that come into effect from next month. Other changes will be put into place from 2020.
From 1 July 2019 the KiwiSaver scheme will be open to people of all ages – giving people 65 and over the ability to join KiwiSaver. The changes will also remove the lock-in period that required people over 60 to remain in the scheme for five years before withdrawing their money. At the moment, people over 65 can’t join KiwiSaver or move to a new scheme, although you can continue to contribute to their accounts if you are already a member. If you joined after the age of 60, you still have to wait five years before withdrawing their money.
Letting Work & Income Know About Your Overseas Travel Plans At this time of year many seniors are planning a trip out of New Zealand. Along with organising insurance and stopping the mail and paper, you might need to let Work and Income know.
From 1 April 2020 KiwiSaver members impacted by the five-year lock in period can elect to opt out of this lock in period any time after they reach the age of eligibility for NZ Super. However, this means you won’t be eligible for compulsory employer contributions or the government contribution. For more information about KiwiSaver go to www.kiwisaver.govt.nz or phone 0800 549 472.
