Bay To Benefit From $5 Million Fund Focused On Ageing Well Helping people age well, retaining a more active lifestyle in the process, is the focus of a new $5 million fund. And a handy smartphone app is just one of the ways in which the money will be used to help do that. The funding from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) will support the AWESSoM (Ageing Well through Eating, Sleeping, Socialising and Mobility) trial, scheduled to begin in September and which the Bay of Plenty District Health Board (BOPDHB) will participate in. AWESSoM is headed by Professor Ngaire Kerse from the University of Auckland but a researcher will be based in the Bay of Plenty throughout. Part of the trial will involve adapting a smartphone LifeCurve app which supports healthy ageing. “In Scotland the LifeCurve is used to support healthy ageing and to identify where Allied Health professionals should be intervening,” says BOPDHB Allied Health Director Dr Sarah Mitchell [pictured], who worked on a similar programme in Scotland.
Sarah says the proposed app will take people through a series of questions based on everyday tasks to assess their functionality. This information will then be used to compare the user with others of comparable age. “Normal ageing starts with the process of not being able to cut your toenails and progresses through a number of stages all the way through to not being able to eat independently,” says Sarah. “You can tell a person they are either mildly frail, moderately frail, or severely frail, but that doesn’t mean anything to them and is a very deficit based approach. But if you can tell them where they are based on what things they are able, or unable, to do, that means so much more and focuses on their assets rather than their deficits. “This is where you are but if you do this, this and this, you can get better. It’s simple but effective. It might also then suggest activities the person might like to pursue to improve or maintain their function. “It might for example, suggest a local aqua aerobics class with one of our partner agencies,” added Sarah. “Because it’s fun and easy for people, using reallife examples of everyday tasks, it really resonates. People love it.
“At the end of the day what we’re trying to do is to help people live healthier happier lives as they age. The work in Scotland was based on where it was best to concentrate our efforts to do that. The idea was to shift our Allied Health expertise and in some cases resources much closer to the top of the curve so that people could benefit more.” 3

Downton Abbey to be
released on 12 September
The eagerly awaited Downton Abbey movie is set to hit New Zealand cinemas on September 12th. The movie was written by Julian Fellowes who also wrote all six series of the Downton Abbey collection, and fans will be pleased to learn that the movie follows on from the series featuring all characters that were still alive, except Lady Rose MacClare as she went to live in New York in the finale of Season Six.
DOWNTON ABBEY TUESDAY 17 SEPTEMBER 7.30pm (Entertainment from 6.30pm)
Rialto Cinema, 21 Devonport Rd, Tauranga Prizes for best dressed Proudly Supported By:
$30 TICKET INCL. GLASS OF BUBBLES/JUICE & POPCORN waipunahospice.org.nz/movie | Eventfinda events@waipunahospice.org.nz | (07) 552 6892
The film is set near the end of 1926, a year and half after the last episode of series six, in the stately home at Highclere Gardens, where the aristocratic characters Lord and Lady Grantham have the seat at the fictionally named stately home ‘Downton Abbey’ in Yorkshire. There’s not much we can give away about the actual film at this stage, however we can promise a movie of epic proportions, moving from the small screen to the big seamlessly incorporating the fierce sibling rivalry of Lady Mary and Edith who struggles to adapt to her new rank of Marchioness. The return of Carson in service is needed as a royal appearance from Queen Mary and Princess Royal comes to Downton.
Filming began late September 2018 and features the magnificent Highclere Gardens house, gardens and estate, set in Hampshire. The filming in the fictional home of Baron and Baroness Merton at ‘Crawley House’, which is supposed to be set in Yorkshire, actually took place in Bampton, Oxfordshire with the internal filming takes place in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire. As any dedicated Downton Abbey fan will know the servant areas beneath the house in the hall and the kitchens aren’t actually filmed in the same place, they are a fictional fabrication purposely built in Ealing Studios several miles from Highclere Gardens, these scenes were filmed independently of the house across different locations at the same time, piecing the footage together to create the servants leaving the kitchen and entering the house seamlessly. We look forward to seeing this on our screens on September 12.

“Come rain or shine, our team of volunteers will be out in force at over 250 collection sites across our region on Daffodil Day, asking Kiwis to make a donation that will make a positive impact in the life of someone facing a cancer diagnosis,” says Lauren Payne, fundraising campaigns coordinator for the Waikato/ Bay of Plenty Cancer Society.
The Cancer Society is a communityfunded charity which relies on fundraising, donations and sponsorship to provide free services and programmes. Last year, Cancer Society supportive care nurses in Waikato/Bay of Plenty reached out to people needing support or assistance on 8,795 occasions, and their volunteer drivers made 3,567 trips to assist people to and from treatment, driving 119,245 kilometres in total. “From providing practical and emotional support to helping Kiwis reduce their risk, every dollar goes a long way to make a difference in our communities.”

How to Start a Worm Farm A fun way to recycle your kitchen scraps and garden waste into a nutrient rich, natural fertiliser for your garden is to start a worm farm. • Identify the container for liquid collection. On top of this place the bin which has holes in the bottom, this is the first working tray. Add a couple of layers of newspaper across the bottom and then an 8cm layer of bedding material such as peat moss or aged compost to start the worms off. • Start by adding up to 500g of worms to the bedding material and cover them with a blanket, worm blankets are available in store. • Allow the worms a few days to settle into their new home then add a handful of food scraps to their surface feeding area as well as some paper towels, egg cartons etc., and place the worm blanket back on top. • Keep the carpet and worm food materials damp, watering approximately one litre per week.
• Place your worm farm in a cool dry area of the garden away from the hot sun. • The worm population will gradually increase and will self- regulate at around 12 months. • Continue to feed regularly rather than in large amounts, up to around six litres of waste per week. • When the first working bin fills up with vermicast (worm poos) place another working bin on top and continue with feeding into the second level – the worms will start to move upwards. When this fills add the third working bin and only feed in this layer. When the third working bin is full you can use the first working tray of vermicast on the garden. Place the empty bin back on top, this rotates the layers of the worm farm.

READY 40 mins
METHOD 1 Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a 13 x 9 x 2 inch baking pan with foil, extending foil over the edges of the pan. Coat foil with cooking spray; set pan aside.
2 In a medium bowl, whisk together the granulated sugar, the 1¼ cups white whole-wheat flour, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, the baking soda and salt. In another medium bowl whisk together oil, eggs and vanilla; stir in apples. Add egg mixture to flour mixture; stir until combined (batter will be very stiff and dough like). Balance (to prevent falls) such as: • bowls • standing on one leg. Resistance (for muscle and bone strength) such as: • carrying shopping • standing up and sitting down repeatedly. HON SIMON BRIDGES National Party MP for Tauranga – Message for Prime Readers Tauranga is the fastest growing city in New Zealand. We have the enviable mix of a vibrant business community and an outstanding lifestyle with the beautiful beaches and scenery that surround our city. I have had the privilege of representing Tauranga for the past 11 years and last year became the Leader of the National Party. I live in Tauranga with my wife Natalie and my three young children. We all enjoy spending time at our local beaches. It’s a fantastic place to raise a family. Our region has the largest and fastest growing port in New Zealand. Until recently our businesses have been thriving. Transport has become a major issue for the local community. The Labour-led Government abandoned Nationals plan to upgrade SH2. This has serious safety and traffic flow implications. All of the roading projects currently underway in the Bay, such as Bayfair to Baypark were started under a National government. Keeping our region moving is essential for growth and the local economy.
We have lots of momentum here but the rising cost of living and a slowing economy are concerning. The bad economic management of the Labour Government means hardworking locals are struggling. The people I meet every day reinforces to me that our community is strong and resilient. They want to achieve for themselves and their families. The Government needs to front up by providing the infrastructure and incentives to promote growth and independence. It is exciting to be part of a growing city that is full of energy and enthusiasm. It will be even better when we can return to a time of greater infrastructure and business confidence.

Itchy Heavy Restless Legs? New Job Site Exclusively
It Could Be Your Veins
For Seniors
Varicose veins develop when the veins valves become ‘leaky”-mostly in the lower legs. The commonest cause of varicose veins is inheriting them from your parents, but pregnancy and weight are also a major factor. Males can be affected just as much as females, though as with many health issues, women are more likely to get them treated.
“Seniors@work” has just been launched and is designed exclusively for people over 60 who are looking for work opportunities. It has been set up by a fellow Senior as a tool to connect employers with a fantastic pool of talented, skilled and experienced people who can add real value to the workplace.
Varicose veins can cause several symptoms -- heaviness, cramping, restless legs, and in the later stages, leg ulcers that won’t heal. Sometimes people experience symptoms before varicose veins are visible, and assume it’s “just a part of getting older”. It’s worth getting your legs checked out by a doctor qualified in “phlebology”, or varicose veins treatment, if you have any of those symptoms. Depending on your policy, your vein treatment could be covered by your health insurance. At your initial appointment, the doctor will take a medical history and use an ultrasound to scan your veins to determine whether they are likely to be the cause of your symptoms. This is followed by a more detailed ultrasound scan where the veins are “mapped” by a sonographer.
Once varicose veins were treated by “stripping”, which meant cutting out ropey veins. This meant a general anaesthetic and a stay in hospital, but technology has greatly improved in the past decades. Patients now can walk out of treatments and get back to work the following day. Treatments are non-surgical, done under local anaesthetic and one leg takes approximately an hour to treat using modern ablation (heating) and ultrasound-guided techniques. Follow ups over the course of a year are included as part of this initial treatment costs, and how many follow-ups are required varies between individual people. Generally only three or four followup appointments are required.

What is the Te Papa ? The Te Papa peninsula runs from Barkes Corner, through the City Centre to the harbourside bridge. 111 calls are free. You can call this number on a mobile phone even if the phone is out of credit. The operator will ask you which service you need and connect you to the right service. Call 111 and ask for Police when: • Someone is breaking into your house right now • There is car accident where people might be hurt, or cars are blocking the road • Someone has been assaulted and the offender is still there
The other 80 percent of 111 calls received, while still prioritised, are considered non-emergency matters. Examples of non-emergency matters Police receive include such things as reports of historic crimes, noise and parking complaints. Non-emergency matters take up valuable time in the 111 system and may cause a delay for someone in a life-threatening situation or real emergency.
• You are afraid for your safety and or for those around you
There are alternative contacts members of the public can use in a non-emergency situation to contact Police:
• You need an emergency Police response
• Use 105.police.govt.nz or call 105 or for reporting situations that don’t require immediate Police or Emergency Services attendance. Again 105 is for Police, not other emergency services
If you can’t decide if it’s a real emergency and you’re still worried, call 111 and ask us. We’ll help you work out what to do. Police receive 900,000 111 calls a year. Around 20 per cent of those calls result in an emergency or immediate response (otherwise known as a P1 event). A P1 event is when there a serious threat to life or property, violence is being used or threatened to being used, a serious offence or incident is in progress, an offender is present or leaving the scene and where a serious car accident has happened and people are trapped or seriously injured.

Te Reo Māori Lessons For Health Staff Bay of Plenty District Health Board (BOPDHB) staff and their whānau have the opportunity to learn te reo Māori on-site thanks to a new initiative to grow the use and quality of te reo me ōnā tikanga within the DHB and its communities. The joint initiative between BOPDHB, Te Rūnanga Hauora Māori o Te Moana ā Toi and Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi was officially launched at Whakatāne Hospital earlier this week. About 400 staff have expressed interest in learning te reo and tikanga Māori since the opportunity was raised earlier this year.
Classes are due to start in midSeptember with sessions at both Whakatāne and Tauranga hospitals. BOPDHB General Manager Māori Health Gains and Development Tricia Keelan, who is a passionate advocate for te reo says, “he rongoā tö te reo; ko te wawata, ka rongo i te reo Māori e rere nei I ngā tari me ngā kapa o te DHB, hei reo whakahaere I ngā mahi, hei rongoā hoki mo ngā kaimahi me ngā whānau. Vege Of The Month
CAULIFLOWER!
These large, hardy, crisp vegetables are a great staple to plant in your winter garden. Full of goodness, easy to grow, and extremely versatile in your winter recipes whether it’s a heartwarming mid-week meal or added to something a little special for entertaining. First introduced in NZ by British settlers in the 19th century, the cauliflower historically originates from the Mediterranean regions of western and southern Europe and North Africa. Suited to conventional winter flavours, it also lends itself well to Mediterranean and eastern spice combinations. Easy to see why this amazing vegetable remains popular today.

A member of the brassica family, cauliflower grows the best during the NZ winter months, however can be grown in late autumn and early spring. Due to its size it takes slightly longer from sowing to harvest then other brassicas (approximately three to four months), but the result is worth the wait. Cauliflower doesn’t enjoy temperatures under -10 degrees, or over 25 degrees, so make sure you are planting at the best time.
How is your garden growing? Get in Touch! Spring is just a month away! With warmer weather just around the corner I’m itching to get growing in the garden. To prepare the beds, I’ve spent some time in the last week digging in compost, lime and general garden fertilizer to help prepare the soil structure for my much anticipated spring planting. I like to use sheep pellets, and some compost from my compost bin at this time of year.
Seeds to Sow
Harvesting
I love sowing my spring seeds ready for early summer planting. If you have a sunny windowsill put aside, or a greenhouse, now is the time to sow eggplant, capsicum, tomatoes, chilli, sweetcorn, pumpkin, cucumber and zucchini.
Our broccoli are still producing really well this year, and I have the first of my carrots ready. We also have lettuce, mizuna, mesculan and bok choi ready to pick, and the last of the grapefruit.
Seedlings to plant I’m planting these seedlings direct in my garden this time of year: Beetroot, Kohlrabi, lettuce, mizuna, NZ spinach, spring onions and if I had space I’d put in an early variety of potato.
How is your garden growing? What are you planting for the spring and summer? Get in touch with your gardening stories, we’d love to hear from you.
h t n o M e h t RECIPE of Ingredients
Cauliflower Falafels
250g cauliflower heads finely chopped (approx half a cauliflower) ¼ Cup tahini ½ to 1 Cup flat leaf parsley leaves finely chopped ½ Cup mint leaves 2 Tablespoons of grated lemon rind 1 spring onion finely chopped 1 ½ Cups almond meal Method Preheat oven to 180 degrees on bake. Place the cauliflower, tahini, parsley, mint, grated lemon rind, and spring onion in a food processor and process for 15-20 seconds or until the mixture just comes together. Then add the almond meal and salt and pepper and mix by hand. Shape the mixture into small balls and place on a lined baking tray. Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden and firm. Serving Suggestions • These are brilliant as a flavour packed addition to a larger antipasto platter • They are a favourite of ours for mid-week wraps with fresh salad and dressing • Great as a weekend snack with a dressing and a squeeze of lemon 24
Tash's Tips
Plant seedlings 30cm apart in well composted soil, in a sunny position. Watch out for slugs and snails around younger plants. Fertilise through the growing season with liquid fertiliser when the heads form. To harvest, cut off the head before you pull out the root, (otherwise you could end up with dirt all through your crop). If you leave the plant root in, new smaller heads will appear in a few weeks below the first one and continue to sprout for the rest of the season. Harvest cauliflower when the heads are still tight, as once they start spreading they tend to lose flavour.

Your Free Will Supports Your Hospice Just like the beginning of life when preparing for the arrival of a baby, the end of life also requires some careful thought and preparation:
We also believe good estate planning reduces anxiety for those left behind by protecting the family and avoiding costly legal bills.
• HOW will you protect your loved ones? • HOW will you ensure your wishes are met? • WHAT legacy will you leave for generations to come?
For a limited time Waipuna Hospice and local solicitors who have volunteered their expertise are making it easier for you to create or update your Will.
Making or updating your Will allows you to make your wishes known and gives clear instruction about what you want to happen when you die. It can be a very simple exercise yet the impact of not having a Will can add significantly to the distress of a bereaved family. At Waipuna Hospice we often help grieving families through grief counselling and support groups.
Just include a gift to Waipuna Hospice in your Will and your participating solicitor will draw up, free of charge, a basic Will or amendment to an existing Will or a memorandum of wishes (in the case of a Family Trust). Anyone can make a gift in their Will, gifts range from a few hundred dollars to a specific item or a percentage of the estate after your family have been looked after.
To receive a voucher for your basic Free Will writing contact Wayne Bloxham on 0800 4 WAIPUNA (0800 492 478) or email info@waipunafortomorrow.org.nz before 20 September 2019.

A decision has been made to seek more information on the different options to repair the slip on Mauao that destroyed part of the base track. At the Projects, Services and Operations Committee today, Tauranga City Council staff sought direction from the committee on the preferred construction option and approval of additional budget to undertake the works. However, the mayor and councillors unanimously agreed that further analysis should be completed before a decision is made. Councillor Leanne Brown, Chair of the Projects, Services and Operations Committee said that we need to find the best long-term solution to future proof a vulnerable area of the mountain. “We recognise that Mauao is of special interest to the community and to visitors, and is also of significant importance to Tauranga Moana iwi. We need to further explore options to repair the mountain, taking into consideration the archaeological resources, ecological environment and cultural values of Mauao. “It is not as simple as bringing in a digger and rocks. Whilst in the eyes of the community, it has taken too long to make a decision on the repair; we need to ensure we find a solution that is possible, will be approved by Mauao’s owners and Heritage New Zealand, and delivers on community expectations.”
Brain Teaser Answers 1. Smiles – Because a ‘mile’ exists between the two S’s. While that is a good answer to the riddle, the actual longest English word is ‘Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis’ – the meaning of which is a lung disease, that is caused due to inhalation of very fine silica particles, which turn cause inflammation of the lungs. The other long English word is ‘floccinaucinihilipilification’ – which means to describe something as worthless, or turning something into being worthless by deprecating it’
Mauao is private land owned by the Mauao Trust, held in the names of the three Tauranga Moana iwi (Ngāti Ranginui, Ngāi Te Rangi and Ngāti Pūkenga with Waitaha a Hei as an advisory trustee). Tauranga City Council works alongside the Mauao Trust to manage the reserve. This administration body is called Ngā Poutiriao ō Mauao. Background summary: • A significant slip occurred during excyclone weather events in April 2017 • Damage sustained washed away part of the track • A temporary set of stairs were put in place to provide a short-term solution and enable access • In 2017, Tonkin & Taylor undertook a high-level options analysis of the possible track remediation options • The preferred option was presented to the mayor and councillors, who approved the initial budget • The budget has subsequently increased due to a number of complexities that arose as the design process was worked through.
