Alvis 1954: TC 21 sports saloon, drophead coupé
[ BEATRICE | Diagnosed 2010 ]
The Alvis TC 21 was a British sporting car made by the Alvis Car and Engineering Company. The car was available in four door Saloon and drophead versions. The bodies style was essentially the same as the TA 21, one of the differences was the fitting of chrome plated window surround on the doors. A saloon version tested by The Motor magazine in 1954 had a top speed of 161 km/h and could accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 15.4 seconds. 757 were made from 1953-1955 and Carjam reports that there are only seven of these vehicles in New Zealand.

Bentley 1953: Sister to the Rolls Royce Silver Dawn The Bentley R Type is the second series of post-war Bentley automobiles, replacing the Mark VI. Other than the radiator grilles and the carburation there was little difference between the standard Bentley R Type and the Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn. The R Type was the more popular marque, with some 2500 units manufactured during its run to the Silver Dawn’s 760. Carjam reports that only three of these Bentleys are currently in New Zealand. With a top speed of nearly 165 km/h, the Bentley Saloon was the highperformance luxury sedan of its time. The Motor magazine also reported that the Bentley could accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 13.25 seconds. 3
Staying Healthy To The End By Professor Matthew Parsons
Use it or lose it is as true today as it always has been and is as relevant to keeping the brain going as it is to keeping the body in good shape, or even friendships and social networks. However, what does it actually mean – do we need to go to the gym every morning?
What’s interesting is that it doesn’t occur if we remain fit and active.
Just because somebody is 80 years of age doesn’t suddenly mean their personality changes.
We now know these declines are not an agerelated change. They occur as a consequence of social change – children, time pressures, parking the car close to the shops so that we can get home quicker to make dinner.
They’re the same person they’ve always have been. If they didn’t like attending a gym when they were 20, they probably don’t want to go to a gym now. Our peak muscle mass occurs in our mid 20s and there’s a gradual decline from that point. If we’re inactive, we lose muscle mass by around three per cent per day.
We don’t usually notice the reduced fitness until much later on, often in our early 50s and 60s, and then often fail to do much about it until it becomes a problem. The reason for this is our bodies have been designed with plenty of spare capacity or reserves. It’s not until those reserves have been eroded away that we notice things are amiss. If we don’t notice until our 80s, then it becomes a real issue. After a very large study of older people, a British researcher, Anne Netton, concluded that the four areas that were most important, or the aspects of life that would cause most damage if they were removed were: • • • •
Adequate food and nutrition Personal safety Social participation and involvement Control over daily life (the most significant of all).
Older people tell us again and again that what is so important to them is remaining in control, being independent, being able to do what they want when they want. The trick for all of us is to try to ensure that this occurs until the day we die and if we do, we can truly say that we lived well! How do we achieve this? We know there are numerous threats to independence and these range from physical to psychological. Psychological well-being in many ways is more complex. We know that a positive outlook on life throughout life reaps dividends in later life, but this is not a personality attribute that miraculously occurs on reaching old age. What we all can do however is create a safety buffer, maintaining social networks are so vitally important and remaining active in one’s community is an easy way to achieve this. Once again, we need to remain physically active to achieve this, which returns us to that use it or lose it adage. Published by
New Zealand researchers have also explored what are the successful ingredients to old age.

The last case of measles in the Bay of Plenty and Lakes districts was confirmed on the 19th of September. Confirmed measles cases by district: • Western Bay – 33 • Eastern Bay – 0 • Rotorua – 8 • Taupō – 8 The MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine is free and very effective in preventing measles. After just one dose of MMR vaccine about 95% of people will be protected from measles, and 99% of people who have had two MMR doses will be protected from measles.
If you think you or someone in your family may have measles, stay at home and phone your doctor to alert them of your symptoms and allow them to make arrangements to assess you safely and without infecting other people, or call Healthline on 0800 611 116 for advice.
Please do not just turn up to your GP, after hours or emergency department without first phoning ahead as you could potentially infect others.
People born before 1 January 1969 are considered to be immune because virtually everyone got measles prior to the measles immunisations being introduced that year, and so this older age group does not need to have the measles immunisations.

Prime Brain Teasers 1. Two twins are lying next to a king and a queen in a large room. Yet, there are no adults and there are no children in the room. How is it possible? 2. A man is sitting in his cabin in Hamilton. Three hours later he gets out of his cabin in Christchurch. How is this possible? 3. A bus driver was heading down a street in Frankton. He went right past a stop sign without stopping, turned left where there was a “no left turn” sign, and went the wrong way on a one-way street. Then he went on the right side of the road past a police car. Yet, he didn’t break any traffic laws.
Prime Walks This Edition: OROKAWA
BAY WALK
This popular walk starts at the northern end of Waihi Beach. Wind around the coastal headlands to reach Orokawa Bay and enjoy a picnic on the beach in the shade of giant pohutukawa trees. Allow 45 minutes each way. If you’re on holiday at Waihi Beach, a walk around the coastal headland to Orokawa Bay is an amazing way to spend a few hours. At the very northern end of Waihi Beach (just past the surf lifesaving club) you’ll find the entrance to this track. Access isn’t always possible during high tide or if there’s a very strong swell, so pick the right time to go. It’ll take you around 45 minutes to walk through the lush dense bush and descend down into Orokawa Bay. Enjoy the sounds of birdlife as you pass by towering pohutukawa trees, kauri, puriri and our native nikau palm trees.
4. A sundial has the fewest moving parts of any timepiece. Which has the most?
You’ll have stunning views of the coastline and Pacific Ocean during this walk, including a bird’s eye view over Waihi Beach’s white sand before you disappear over the top of the headland. This is an easy to moderate walk but it is hilly so wear sturdy walking or running shoes rather than jandals. There are no toilets, drinking water, food or facilities available along the way, so make sure you’re well prepared before you set out. Unfortunately this beach is not considered safe for swimming due to the steep grade of the seafloor and the potential for rips, but good fishing can be found off the rocks at the northern end of the bay. Be aware of tidal movements and wave conditions which can change with little warning. If you really want to stretch your legs, carry on walking north to Homunga Bay. It’ll take you another 90 minutes or so to reach this spot and you’ll need a good level of fitness.
5. When can you add two to eleven and get one as the correct answer?
Orokawa Bay and Homunga Bay are considered to be two of the most scenic beaches in our coastal region. Enjoy exploring them for yourself.

Vege Of The Month
PEAS
Peas are one of the first crops I plant in the spring. I just love their juicy crunch and fresh flavour. I get my seeds sown as soon as I see the first signs that spring is on its way. These can be different for you depending on your local climate. Where I live, when I see the mornings are lighter and the temperatures are just warming, I know it’s time to plant the peas. Pea plants are easy to grow, but have a limited growing season. Also, peas don’t tend to stay fresh for too long after harvest, so enjoy them while you can! There are two types you can grow. Snow peas (edible flat pods with peas in side), and snap peas (edible pods with full sized peas).
Companions
As with other legumes , peas will fix nitrogen in the so il, making it available for other pla nts. This makes them a great co mpanion in your garden. They are a great companion for a large variety of vegetables from carro ts to spinach and broccoli. The one vegetable family to keep them se parate from is onions and ga rlic.
How is your garden growing? Get in Touch! From now the soil is warming up and there’s generally a bit more sun in the day. In between the spring showers and deluges where soil is not too wet, continue getting planting areas ready by removing any lingering weeds and adding some compost, chopped up seaweed, pea straw or well-rotted manure to revitalize your garden.
Seeds to Sow Seeds to sow direct from now include climbing and dwarf beans, beetroot, carrots, coriander and rocket. Make sure you are checking and watering any seed trays you have sown under cover for your late spring planting too. Tomatoes, capsicum and eggplant seeds may have all come up but they’re still small and fragile and need care.
Harvesting We are enjoying broad beans, cabbage, fennel, lettuce, leek, mizuna, mesculan and radishes from our garden. Those of you with avocado trees will be enjoying a harvest of these too.
Seedlings to plant I’m planting these seedlings direct in my garden this time of year: beetroot, kohlrabi, lettuce, leek, silver beet and spring onion. Now is also a good time to plant blueberries as a young plant.

My principal place of residence is in the Western Bay of Plenty District Council area.
My principal place of residence is in the Western Bay of Plenty District Council area. I am also standing for Maketu-Te Puke Ward, Te Puke Community Board. As a thoroughly invested member in the nonprofit sector of the Te Puke district, both as an individual and as founding trustee of Vector Group Charitable Trust, I am available to offer creative, collaborative and inclusive input, as a potential Western Bay of Plenty Mayor. My involvement with Taiohi (Youth) and Community in our region is positive, strategic, creative, collaborative and inclusive. I have a passion to see the Western Bay of Plenty region thrive. My top five strengths are Connectedness, Empathy, Context, Positivity and Strategic. I would love to contribute to wider representation, positive and strategic outcomes for the WBOP region. I see this as an opportunity to strengthen leadership, invite wider inclusion of youth and ethnic diversity in decision making, capacity, community representation and advocacy, creative arts and value-add to our region.
I am a proud Western Bay Ratepayer living in Omokoroa and have served as a Councillor since 2010 and Mayor since 2016. When I stood in 2016 I stated that Proven Professional Leadership was needed to address council rates and performance. I am proud to say that our rates are now aligned with many others, our debt has reduced significantly and Council is performing really well. That said, there remains much to do, so now is not the time for a Leadership Change. With your support, I will continue to focus on core services and to work vigorously with central government to get the Roading and Infrastructure upgrades our district desperately needs. My effective leadership style will continue and my forty years proven business and local government experience will be used appropriately to ensure that every resident feels valued and heard. Garry Webber for Financially Prudent and Inclusive Leadership.
Margaret Murray-Benge My principal place of residence is not in the Western Bay of Plenty District Council area. I am also standing for Kaimai Ward. Experienced and passionate, with a record of results, I have remained true to the people of the community I am privileged to serve. When elected as Mayor, I will continue to work tirelessly for all our people. It’s imperative that we treat everybody as equals, whenever they or their ancestors arrived in New Zealand – it is the cornerstone of democracy. This is my fundamental belief. Our two congested state highways, SH2 and SH29, have very serious safety issues. Our rural roads also need more attention. I will work with TCC and central government to get real progress on both state highways and local roads. Every dollar spent by council will be examined carefully to ensure ratepayers get best value for money. I want the Western Bay Council to work with the community, driven by a culture of “How can we help together?” I am committed to making that happen.

Kia ora everyone, my name is Pare Taikato and I’m standing as an independent at large candidate for Tauranga City Council. Tauranga is in my DNA. I was born here in 1973 and raised in Maungatapu where I still live. I attended Tauranga Girls College and studied at Waikato University in Hamilton in the 1990’s. I graduated with a Master’s Degree in Social Sciences in 1999 before embarking on my OE to Japan for the next 4 years where I taught English as a Second Language. I have one teenage child and I have a diverse background in a number of fields including as a creative practitioner of weaving having taught classes at Toi Ohomai, The Incubator and the Tauranga Art Gallery. Previously I worked at Creative BOP as the Community Arts and Development Coordinator and I planned and coordinated the community engagement strands of the sub regional arts and culture strategy alongside project lead Dawn Hutchesson.
Pare with Donna Dinsdale, ToiOhomai fashion programme teacher, wearing her own designs at NZ Fashion Week 2019 in Auckland. 12
My governance experience has included in more recent times being a Trustee for various Trusts holding interests in land and high value horticulture. Most recently I have joined the Acorn Foundation distributions committee and the Institute of Directors.
Pare with the Minsister for Local Goverment, Hon Minister Nanaia Mahuta at the turning of the sod for a new development in Welcome Bay.
I believe that I bring to Council, a disciplined governance practice informed by my experience as a Trustee and an additional perspective as a practitioner of high level community engagement, through a creative lens. Key area’s including infrastructure, Housing and Community Development are large and complex however I believe that some of the key issues impacting our communities include the need to revitalise the CBD and Te Papa peninsula, a lack of affordable quality housing in the city and barriers to access for land development on the urban fringe, and the absence of a collaborative working relationship with other territorial local authorities and central government.
NO VOLUNTEERS,
NO HOSPICE CHARITY SHOPS Shop volunteers are a very important part of our service and we would not be able to operate without them.
JOIN A FUN & SUPPORTIVE TEAM
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! Interested in joining our team at our charity shops? Phone 07 552 6897 or visit waipunahospice.org.nz/volunteer We can't wait to meet you! WAIPUNAHOSPICE.ORG.NZ
Waipuna Hospice charity shops provide fundamental income to allow your local hospice to provide care and support for people who are facing a life-limiting illness. Without crucial shop volunteers Waipuna Hospice would not be able to provide specialist palliative care at no cost to people in our community. Not only will you be helping your community, volunteering is a great opportunity to connect with people you would not usually connect with, socialise and learn new skills. Volunteers at the Waipuna Hospice Mount Maunganui charity shop say, “volunteering is very rewarding as well as feeling you are supporting a worthwhile cause. It’s a fun place to work and I have made great friends and met some wonderful customers. Seven years here and love coming each week.”
Waipuna Hospice Mount Maunganui charity shop manager David Charlton cannot speak highly enough of the volunteers, “we have great volunteers who all have their own special skills, which in turn creates a great business with truly dedicated people who are kindly giving back to their own community. Our shop volunteers not only work but also have lots of fun doing so in a fun environment and we socialise together. Our youngest volunteer is 18 and our oldest is 89 we are all like one big happy family. Everyone is welcome to apply to volunteer in our charity shops. If you’re interested in lending a helping hand and joining our fun and supportive team please apply online at waipunahospice.org.nz/ volunteer or email volunteers@ waipunahospice.org.nz or phone 07 552 6897. We look forward to meeting you!

Windows Scams From the Editor
Not so long ago I received a “cold call” from a caller who identified himself as a Windows technical support person and that they have discovered a “virus” on my computer. After assuring the caller that I did not own a computer, he hung up and that was the end of my interaction. This is a standard type of scam and unsuspecting victims are conned into thinking they genuinely have a virus issue. After all, you don’t want to lose your hard work, all those precious photographs – or be without your computer due to a virus, right? The aim of the scammer is for you download a small file containing a programme that they can use to remotely access your computer. Once done, this will allow them to steal your data and install ransomware. Your scammer will no doubt also perform some “tech support theater” to look as though they know what they’re doing. Once the “virus” is discovered, of course, the scammers will demand money for their services of “removing” it. If you refuse, you will be held to “ransom” as the scammers have remotely changed your password or encrypted your files so that you are essentially “locked out” of your own computer. The scammers now have full control over all the data on your computer, including all your passwords. Netsafe reported that in 2018 Kiwis lost at least $33 million to phone scams.
In a recent study from Microsoft it is reported that New Zealanders are the most targeted in the world when it comes to tech support scams. More than three-quarters of Kiwis in the study reported having experienced at least one such scam, well above the global average of 62 percent. But the biggest surprise may come in who those were that were falling victim to tech scams … While many people believe the tech-naïve older generation are easily fooled when it comes to scammers, it was male millennials who were the most likely to experience financial losses from a scam. This reminds me of the story of an elderly lady’s highly indignant reply when she was harassed by one of these scammers – “I can assure you there are no viruses on my windows, I washed them all just last week!”
Third Age Tours
The best advice in dealing with these scam calls is to simply put the phone down and not engage in any conversation with the caller. You can be sure that no legitimate Windows employee will ever phone you – even if you happen to have a virus on your computer. Anyway, unless you are an employee, Microsoft does not have your phone number. Netsafe offers support and advice for people who have lost money in a scam, or think they are about to. You can contact Netsafe http://www.netsafe.org. nz/report , or you can report the scam to the New Zealand Police.

Lynne Sinclair Taylor
This Labour Weekend Lynne Sinclair Taylor will be holding an art exhibition entitled “Valuable” in the conference room at The Raft Espresso and Eatery, Chapel St, Tauranga. The doors open at 5.30pm Friday 25th October with the official opening at 6.15pm and finishing at 4pm Monday 28th. Over the years she has experimented with a wide range of subjects including flowers, scenes, still life, abstracts, and portraits which has meant her exhibitions have had that element of surprise. Lynne is a realist at heart and her first exhibition was in Devonport, Auckland, selling most of her still life works in a week. Over the years she has branched into impressionism, expressionism, and abstracts and many of her recent paintings have a combination of realism and abstract. She moved to Tauranga four years ago from Hamilton.
The paintings portray different people, mainly women, in different ways with each painting being enhanced with gold, glitter or bronze to represent the value inherent in every individual. Lynne has been known for her vibrant use of colour over the last 25 years and in her early art career entered competitions and won five first prizes in a short period of time.
“I have a love for fashion and design and this can be seen in some of my latest paintings. My hope is that the viewer will be impacted by the beauty and vibrance in my paintings which represents the rich value of people.”
WIN “Rose” valued at $43 see article fo r details!

Ocean City
Mount Maunganui to Papamoa is the jewel in the crown of Tauranga. Blessed mountain with beautiful sandy beaches and a spectacular inner harbour. Issues that need addressing: • Port of Tauranga is good for the national interest but needs to reduce its detrimental environmental effects • Ballooning debt requires financial control • Air and water quality • Traffic congestion and parking. Park and ride and E mobility • No more loss of the green footprint (parks/reserves) • Underground cycle/pedestrian pathway Matapihi to Bayfair • Re-establish a police station at Mount/Papamoa My wife Suzanne is a teacher. We have three children and two grandchildren. I am currently in a governance role in the primary sector managing farming, fishing, forestry and investment. After many years of public service for central government agencies and military service, I have exercised the skill set necessary for governance of a growing ocean city. 16
Independent
Jos4Mayor Benevolent & Visionary Governance Jos Nagels, Tauranga Resident since 1976, married to Pauline. A civil engineering career over 35 years encompassed roading, traffic, transportation, tunnelling/rail, stormwater, sewage, contract management and design/reports thus familiar with infrastructures. Since 2002 successfully established own business as a solar engineer. As never before, a complete rethink is overdue rather than repeated uncoordinated scenarios of wasting millions on unsustainable overwhelmingly flawed polices. Under knowledgeable leadership and most importantly for the greater public good, Tauranga can forge a unified, progressive long term integrated plan which simultaneously balances solutions to transportation, pollution, environmental, housing, CBD, climate change policy, etc. Well planned passenger rail utilizing the existing rail corridor confers sustainability, efficiency, long term benefits to all and crucially can be done. Holistically, important issues including plastics, land, atmospheric degradation demand serious attention. Visionary, Energetic, Motivated 71, commonsense, practical. Vote Jos for unified mayoral leadership.

My principal place of residence is in the Tauranga City Council area. I am also standing for Councillor – At Large.
Your choice for your voice – Stop the waste
As your Mayor, I’ll hit the ground running, with proven independent and responsible governance experience, focusing on integrity, consultation and democracy. I support transparency in decision-making processes and meetings with community inclusion/consultation for all major planning processes. Unnecessary and wasteful expenditure causing unacceptable debt must stop. Projects need to be prioritized, essential and affordable. Bureaucratic barriers to economic development must be minimised with ratepayers benefiting from growth. Our city needs to be developed to meet the needs of our community with greater cooperation between our neighbouring authorities and government. It is essential that transport corridors are prioritized and planned to cope with growth, inclusive of all commuting options, park and ride facilities, walking and cycling off road where possible. Tauranga has always been my home – I am passionate and committed to see change. Our best days are ahead.
Let’s Build a Better City. Together.
Thank you for the privilege of being your Deputy Mayor for six years. This has prepared me to now step up and lead this beautiful city of Tauranga, where Kathryn and I have been raising our family for thirty years. Together we can make Tauranga Moana the envy of Aotearoa, for family, career, business, learning and lifestyle. I have clearly heard your voice and will lead with greater transparency, and accountability for councillors and staff. I will advocate strongly for our future success. My three core priorities are empowering communities, increasing supply and affordability of housing, and freeing up traffic. You will have a Mayor who is financially astute and a careful spender, but with such a love for community and helping you reach your goals. For the love of Tauranga, cast a positive vote for family and future. Vote Kelvin Clout for Mayor.

My principal place of residence is in the At Large area. I am also standing for Mayor.
My principal place of residence is in the Tauranga City Council area.
I was born in Tauranga. I went to school here, I’m raising my four children here, I’ve seen this town grow and develop into a small city.
Tauranga Deserves Better Leadership
Imagine Tauranga with a Mayor who is an Effective Leader, and who can offer Financially Savvy Management and Strong Regional Cooperation. A Proven and Experienced Leader. Drawing on my experience in the private sector, government entities and the military, we will find solutions for Tauranga’s most pressing issues. I will work with the Chief Executive to transform Council into a responsive and trusted organisation that makes pragmatic decisions and delivers on promises. My vision for Tauranga is a regionally, nationally and globally connected city. A bold, smart city that embraces partnerships, respects and connects our people through the generations, nurtures our environment with a focus on sustainability, and celebrates our leadership position as New Zealand’s epicentre for culture, innovation, entrepreneurship and investment. I was raised and educated here, and it would be an honour to serve you as the next Mayor of Tauranga.
John Robson For Tauranga My principal place of residence is in the Tauranga City Council area. I am also standing for Council At Large. A Councillor recently commented that voters should consider candidates’ achievements outside Council. I retired at 41. I didn’t inherit money, or marry it. Hard work, spending less than I earned, and prudent investing, are a proven recipe.A proposal to increase rates 120% over ten years to transform Tauranga ($55million museum anyone?) resulted in my return to Council in 2018’s by-election – the message being ratepayers rejected the transformation plan. A leadership vacuum meant that, on election, I became de-facto leader of Team Ratepayer and the team delivered: imminent rate increases were halved, extravagant projects were cancelled or postponed, but much damage had been done (not all of which is yet public). Council needs to pause, clean up its mess, focus on the basics, especially transport, and listen to ratepayers. If you elect me as Mayor, and elect a majority of like-minded Councillors, that is what your Council will do.
Les Wallen My principal place of residence is in the Tauranga City Council area. My name is Les Wallen 73 Pastor, Electrician, Pilot, Husband to Dell for 53 years. Primary school at Tokoroa. High School New Plymouth Boy’s High. Electrical apprenticeship Tauranga Electric Power Board. Electrical Trade Certificate. Electrical Advanced Trade Certificate. Studies in PLC automation and Control. Church Pastor – Brisbane 9 years, Gold Coast 4 years, Outback Aerial Ministry 1994 – Present. Businessman 2004 – 2017. I have a lot of experience in putting broken things and people back together I care about this City. I care about people’s lives and what affects them, and I care about you.
Tauranga is broken. Our roads are underfunded, our water supply is under pressure and our recycling/waste treatment is at breaking point. Spending is out of control and us ratepayers are expected to pay for this mismanagement. This overspending must stop. Consultation with community must start. The council must be held accountable. I am a competent parent, scientist and businessman and I will help bring into focus things that matter, roads, rates, water and waste. My skills developed running large teams in many countries have taught me that to win it takes all of the team to achieve the goal. I need you to help me to fix Tauranga. Vote for change and I’ll work hard to get it done.
Greg Brownless
Proven Leadership & Community Commitment My principal place of residence is in the Tauranga City Council area. My first term as Mayor has been much about addressing performance and leading real change. We have employed a new CEO and cut the Management Team from eleven to six. Acknowledging mistakes is not a weakness, it’s a strength, and rather than hiding problems I tell it like it is. I’m frugal in person and that applies to rates increases too. Traffic issues affect everyone and I’m fighting for proper Government roading funding. We need better managed transport before opening up new housing areas. Keep Tauranga racecourse as green space, not choked with housing. I champion ratepayer ownership of our water and completion of our new water scheme. Leading by example, I have a proven long-time commitment to Tauranga. No unachievable populist promises to get re-elected. I’ve unfinished business and in my second term will continue to focus on managing Council costs and efficiency while leading the completion of infrastructure.

My principal place of residence is in the Tauranga City Council area. Tena koe, Greetings to you, I am the great great grand daughter of 1st Maori King Tawhiao Potatau TeWheroWhero original founders of the Maori Treasury, Reserve Bank. Today, this treasury stolen from Bay of Plenty by Wellington Parliament has been abused by the Rob Muldoon era National & Labour Party dirty lawyers & their low dollar decimal point accounting system. This brings me to survey investigate Tauranga Council debt $500 million, Rotorua $300 Million, Auckland $12 Billion. I report this white collared criminal overspending is not being policed by British laws, which should guard treasury spending. Therefore, a collapse of white supremacy, arrogant media, courts, banks, is ahead. A Maori Government to lead our independence, is inevitable! Companion Planting Companion planting is the grouping of plants together in a combination that is beneficial to themselves or other plants around them. Companion planting can help repel unwanted insects or attract beneficial insects, nourish the soil, help control diseases, generally improving growing conditions. Discourage ants and aphids
Encourage celery and carrots
Plant penny royal and tansy throughout the garden. Ants farm aphids, by carrying them from plant to plant as they are very fond of the sweet substance which aphids secrete. The pungent smell of penny royal and tansy will also deter ants from coming into the house. Plant large clumps near entrances. Coriander will help keep aphids away from your garden.
Celery likes to have dill planted nearby. Carrots like chives, sage and coriander planted between their rows.
Encourage asparagus Asparagus grows particularly well if it is surrounded by parsley.
Handy herb Basil is one of the most valuable herbs in the garden. Ornamental basil, sweet basil and bush basil are all beneficial. Bees love it and therefore it brings fertility to the whole garden. It also deters aphids, fruit fly and the common house fly.
Discourage mosquitoes Pots of garlic, which can be easily moved around, will repel mosquitoes. Great for when you are entertaining outdoors.
Discourage insects Nasturtium helps repel wooly aphid and many other garden insects. Marigolds planted throughout the garden will help discourage whitefly.
Discourage slugs and snails Rosemary and rue repel slugs and snails so plant them by your more tender plants.
Encourage roses Garlic and chives planted near roses help repel aphids and other insects whilst enhancing the fragrance of the rose flowers.

Card Free Travel Since August of this year, Bay of Plenty’s SuperGold Card bus users have enjoyed extended free travel on public transport in Tauranga, Rotorua and the Eastern Bay of Plenty. Eligible card holders aged 65 and over, have free bus travel on the regional network from 9am weekdays, and all day weekends. This is a trial until 30 June 2020. Bay of Plenty Regional Council reviewed the hours following requests from the community and the change was adopted as part of Regional Council’s Annual Plan 2019/20. General Manager of Strategy and Science Namouta Poutasi says the changes will allow SuperGold Card bus users to travel for free throughout the day, except for in the early morning commuter peak. “By extending the hours we believe there will be little or no impact on existing bus users,” Ms Poutasi says. The monthly average for SuperGold boardings this year across the region has been 35,800 or just under 1,200 per day.
