biography

manuel romeo born in Saronno, 1985. He got the Master of Science in “Architectural Science” in 2009 and in “Architectural and Urban Design” in 2012 at the Faculty of Architecture, Politecnico di Milano. During these academic years, he began working as an assistant and an apprentice in several architectural firms including the Arch. Giuliana Caterina Conti’s and the Arch. Rolla Giuseppe’s in Monza. Along with studies, he has nurtured his passion for architecture, computer graphics and photography starting his work as freelance professional in 2010, ranging from consultancy to architectural rendering, from interiors architectural design to graphic management of corporate image for several companies. He started collaboration with several architecture firms like Archea Associati and Officina Architetti - Hemberth Penaranda after getting his degree, dealing with projects related to various architectural areas, enriching and deepening his skills and knowledge in architecture, urban planning and technical fields. He has participated in several design competitions, often collaborating with other professionals and with Politecnico di Milano, where he attended some workshops, last of all the one about Responsive Morphologies. manuel romeo nasce a Saronno nel 1985. Nel 2009 consegue la laurea in “Scienze dell’Architettura” e nel 2012 in “Progettazione Architettonica e Urbana” presso la Facoltà di Architettura del Politecnico di Milano. Durante gli anni accademici inizia a lavorare come assistente e apprendista presso diversi studi di architettura tra cui lo studio dell’Arch. Conti Giuliana Caterina e quello dell’Arch. Rolla Giuseppe a Monza. Contemporaneamente agli studi coltiva la passione per l’architettura, la computer grafica e la fotografia iniziando nel 2010 la sua attività di professionista freelance spaziando dalla consulenza all’immagine del progetto, alla progettazione architettonica di interni, fino alla gestione grafica dell’immagine aziendale per diverse società. Nel periodo post-laurea inizia a collaborare con diversi studi come Archea Associati e Officina Architetti-Hemberth Penaranda, seguendo progetti di natura molteplice e arricchendo il bagaglio di conoscenze in ambito architettonico, urbanistico e tecnico. Partecipa a diversi concorsi di progettazione, spesso in collaborazione con altri studi professionali e con il Politecnico di Milano, dove segue alcuni workshop, ultimo fra tutti quello di Responsive Morphologies.

YANQUING GRAPE EXPO_China Project category Landscape, Architecture and Interior Project

Year The project is located in Yanquing in Beijing province. The park is build up of a web of trails and areas creating different sceneries and landscapes inspired by changes offered by seasonal cycles. These changes allow to arrange the park into different thematic areas always offering brand new experiences and a never ending landscape evolution to visitors. The spatial organization is articulated through structured paths (tendrils) and areas (knots). From an architectural point of view, the park consists of 3 access gates and a museum as well as a number of landmarks which allow the visitor to be always able to pinpoint himself inside the expo area.

Il progetto si localizza a Yanquing nella provincia di Pechino. Il parco si compone di una rete di sentieri e aree che creano scenari e paesaggi differenti prendendo spunto dalla varietà offerta dal ciclo stagionale. La variazione oltre ad una continua evoluzione paesaggistica permette un’organizzazione del parco in diverse aree tematiche in grado di offrire esperienze e attività sempre nuove al visitatore. L’organizzazione spaziale si articola attraverso percorsi organci (tendrils) e aree (knot). Architettonicamente il parco si compone di 3 gate di accesso e un museo, oltre ad una serie di landmark che permettono al visitatore di potersi sempre localizzare all’interno dell’expo.

RESIDENCE “COLLE LORETO”_Swiss Project category The basic idea was to create a strong connection with the lake of Lugano. This choice was enhanced by the site topography and emphasized by the architectural choice to slender the building through a considerable prominence towards the lake. Facades are continuous glazed surfaces with warm colors. The ground floor area accommodates commons areas available to residents. Each apartment overlook lodge in order to have the view of lake of Lugano always possible. Interior design follows new standards of contemporary living. Living areas foresee integration of living room and kitchen in order to create large and useful living spaces. The building allows to rationally and independently separate living and sleeping areas, even granting an overlook towards the city.

L’idea è stata quella di creare una forte legame con il Lago di Lugano. Questa scelta è stata valorizzata dalla morfologia del luogo ed enfatizzata dalla scelta architettonica di voler slanciare l’edificio attraverso uno sbalzo considerevole verso il Lago. Le facciate si presentano come delle superfici continue vetrate dai colori caldi. L’area al piano terra ospita spazi comuni a disposizione dei residenti. Tutti gli appartamenti si affacciano sulle logge in modo da rendere sempre possibile la vista sul Lago di Lugano. La progettazione degli interni segue i nuovi standard dell’abitare contemporaneo. Le zone giorno prevedono l’integrazione tra soggiorno e cucina in modo da realizzare ampi spazi vivibili e fruibili. L’edificio permette di distribuire le zone giorno e le zone notte in modo razionale ed indipendente, concedendo un affaccio anche verso la città.

SAUDI ARABIA PAVILION_Italy Expo 2015

Project category Architecture and Interior Project

Year The pavilion is shaped starting from the expo theme “Feeding the planet. Energy for life” and it is identified in the project with a strong cultural-religious call as well as in the agricultural morphology of the Country. The building is on two levels with the majority of the public space on the ground level and an exclusive space on the first floor for institutional personalities and international guests. Internal design has strong contrasts going from darker places, where senses such smell and touch are stimulated, to others where light and light colors fill space. The outer surface is made of a glass casing printed with an highly suggestive pattern.

Il padiglione prende forma partendo dal tema dell’expo: “Nutrire il pianeta. Energia per la vita” e si identifica nel progetto con un forte richiamo culturale- religioso oltre che nella morfologia agricola del paese. L’edificio si articola su due livelli con uno spazio più pubblico nella zona terra e uno esclusivo al primo piano per le figure istituzionali e gli ospiti internazionali. Lo sviluppo interno è fortemente in contrasto passando da luoghi bui in cui si stimolano sensi come l’olfatto e il tatto, ad altri dove la luce e i colori chiari invadono lo spazio. La superficie esterna è costituita da un rivestimento in vetro serigrafato con un motivo fortemente evocativo.

The project is placed in Milan, made by a young couple. The old warehouse was a big empty space where design choices led to a structure ables to ensure an high interiors comfort and multifunctional living spaces (working on material, construction technologies, natural and artificial light and volumes). White walls and stairs have increased the feeling of space continuity between floors while the natural oak flooring is the ideal backdrop for the furniture which main trait is the presence of colors, which can be considered as protagonists of the whole environment.

Il progetto si localizza a Milano ed è stato realizzato per una giovane coppia. Il vecchio magazzino si presentava come un unico grande spazio in cui le scelte progettuali hanno dato origine ad un’organizzazione in grado di garantire un elevato comfort interno e la polifunzionalità dell’ambiente di vita (agendo su materiali, tecnologie costruttive, luce naturale e artificiale e volumi). Le pareti bianche e la scala ha aumentato la sensazione di continuità dello spazio tra i diversi livelli, mentre il pavimento in rovere naturale fa da sfondo per un arredamento in cui la caratteristica fondamentale è la presenza dei colori, che possono essere considerati i protagonisti dell’ambiente.

Project category Interior design

The apartment under construction is located near the famous City Life’s area in Milan. Despite the size of the flat, the client expectation is to have a space with a fresh and young-looking atmosphere and equipped to respect privacy. The leading idea is to create a flexible area, because the studio can be converted to a two-room flat, hosting up-to two double beds. However, the unity of the space is respected. In order to satisfy this desire, for the night-area we provided glass panels able to matt themselves electrically, so that the client can control the level of privacy. To improve the brightness of the spaces, we used clear colors and coverings with a strong chromatic impact, increased by many design accessories.

Il monolocale oggetto di intervento, situato nelle vicinanze della zona di espansione City Life a Milano, risponde alle esigenze della committenza di creare un luogo dall’atmosfera fresca e giovanile che nonostante le dimensioni modeste fosse in grado di rispettare i singoli momenti di vita. L’idea di partenza è quella di uno spazio flessibile, che possa essere un bilocale, ospitando fino a due letti matrimoniali in zone separate, pur mantenendo l’unitarietà delle spazio. Per rispondere a questo desiderio, si è deciso di organizzare la zona notte con dei pannelli di cristallo in grado di opacizzarsi elettricamente, dando così la possibilità al cliente di gestire il livello di privacy a seconda delle esigenze. Per valorizzare la luminosità dei locali si è deciso di utilizzare rivestimenti e tinte molto chiare ad eccezione di alcuni elementi dal forte impatto cromatico, rinforzato con i vari complementi d’arredo.

Client The case study is located in a quiet village in Brianza and it is a young couple’s dwelling house. The project focuses only marginally on the spatial and functional layout of the flat, which is already part of a more complex plan. Materials, attention to details and innovative lighting solutions are the real porpose of this project. We tried to archive a smart and balanced ambient, plain but not impersonal, in order to go along with the clients’ young and a bit unconventional character.

L’oggetto di intervento è localizzato in un tranquillo paese della Brianza e costituisce la casa d’abitazione di una giovane coppia milanese. Il progetto si concentra solo in parte sull’organizzazione spaziale e funzionale dell’appartamento, già facente parte di una progettazione più ampia. Lo studio dei materiali, la cura dei dettagli, l’originalità di alcune soluzioni illuminotecniche, sono il vero oggetto della progettazione che aveva come obiettivo il perseguimento di un ambiente elegante ed equilibrato ma non noioso, sobrio ma null’affatto impersonale, volto ad assecondare il carattere giovane e con una vena stravagante del committente.

CHCLs House’s interior was particurarly designed with attention to functional elements, with spaces of relation and exchange, looking at single moments of life. lt is the main principle of open-spaces. The combination of raw materials with soft and fresh colours has been well-measured enhancing the quality of natural light. The choice of essential furniture and complements aims the ambient to help express the sense of welcome and comfort for a nice living. Client’s needs have been effectively received and responded with a versatile space looking intimate and personal but sometimes can be bold and marked.

La progettazione dell’interno architettonico ha prestato particolare attenzione alle esigenze funzionali, con l’articolazione di ambienti rispondenti ai singoli momenti di vita, pur lasciando loro una forte capacità di relazione e scambio, prerogativa degli open-space. All’utilizzo misurato di materiali non trattati, tinte fresche e delicate, corrisponde una valorizzare della qualità della luce naturalmente presente. La scelta degli arredi e dei complementi dalle forme semplici ed essenziali, è stata attuata con il particolare intento di giungere ad un ambiente capace di esprimere quel senso di accoglienza e serenità caratteristiche dei luoghi dell’abitare. Questo ha permesso di assecondare in modo efficace le richieste della committenza, con uno spazio che rispondesse alle molteplici necessità di utilizzo, un luogo di impatto visivo ed al contempo raccolto, intimo ma dal carattere deciso.

Location This project stems from the need of the Customer for a seat to be used inside commercial spaces and galleries. The concept revolves around the idea of “relationship” meant both as a formal continuity as well as interaction between people and between people and place. This has lead to a strongly characterized object, but evocative and able to adapt to any situation at the same time.

Questo progetto nasce dall’esigenza del committente di avere una seduta da inserire all’interno di spazi commerciali e gallerie. Il concept ruota attorno al concetto di “relazione”, intesa sia come continuità formale, sia come interattività tra persone e tra persone e luogo. Questo ha generato un oggetto fortemente caratterizzato, ma allo stesso tempo evocativo, capace di adattari a qualsiasi situazione.

L’associazione sportiva Divetime.it. club subacqueo giovane e affermato, mi ha selezionato come consulente per la comunicazione e per la gestione e organizzazione dello spazio. Il progetto, ancora in fase di realizzazione, ha compreso l’ideazione creativa del nuovo logo, la realizzazione esecutiva del portale e lo studio d’allestimento della nuova sede operativa, luogo di ritrovo per gli appassionati di questa attività sportiva.

Year 2012

Dolphin, a company dedicated to develop managing software, required the creation of their website. They needed a product that was attractive as well as functional and user-friendly both for the customer and the end-user. The answer was an independently fully updatable website with an high usability and an attractive graphic appearance, in agreement to the customer communication style. Moreover we dealt with the Dolphin campaign for STRATEGA6, aimed to increase the presence of the brand in social media and to increase interaction with customers.

Dolphin, azienda specializzata nello sviluppo di applicazioni gestionali ha richiesto la realizzazione del portale internet. La necessità era di mettere in piedi un prodotto accattivante ma allo stesso tempo funzionale e semplice da utilizzare, sia per il cliente che per l’utente finale. La risposta è stata un portale completamente aggiornabile in autonomia, dall’elevata usabilità e dall’aspetto grafico accattivante, in linea con la comunicazione del cliente. Inoltre mi sono occupato della campagna di Dolphin per STRATEGA6 che è stata finalizzata all’aumento della presenza social del marchio e ad una più attiva interazione con i clienti.

Baruffaldi, worldwide leader in the production of high precision tool machines for the mechanical segment, choses me for the definition of the new corporate image. This project aims to develop the company brand, the complete and updated display of the products’ catalogue, the design of the new website. We focused our attention on the creation of ali communication materials, we provided photo shootings at the company headquarters and the creation of 3D rendering images. These tools enable the customer to browse, search and buy products online, find sales and service points located all over the world, interact with company contacts using the customer area. Baruffaldi, leader mondiale nella produzione di macchine utensili ad alta precisione per i settori meccanici, ha scelto di avvalersi della mia esperienza per la definizione della nuova immagine aziendale, partendo dal restyling del marchio fino alla consulenza alla progettazione degli stand per la partecipazione alle numerose fiere di settore. Il progetto è finalizzato alla presentazione istituzionale dell’azienda e alla completa e aggiornata visualizzazione del catalogo prodotti. Per questo la nostra attenzione è stata dedicata alla realizzazione di tutto il materiale di comunicazione a supporto, partendo dal servizio fotografico presso la sede del cliente alla realizzazione di immagini 3d foto realistiche. Inoltre, ci siamo occupati della progettazione del nuovo portale web dal quale è possibile navigare, fare ricerche, effettuare acquisti on-line consentendo di scoprire i punti di vendita e assistenza distribuiti in tutto il mondo e di interagire online con i referenti aziendali.

Location B.Tech, a leader company operating in domotics and security systems, asked me to develop the new interface layout for their domotics management system. I worked on the process of interface generation implementing the basic software, supporting the company from user-interaction to the creation of icons and custom photorealistic images of rooms and spaces.

Rendering for architecture is one of our consulting services oriented towards project communication. I works with several architecture studios, offices and companies as supplier for the creation of high-quality images concerning building construction, interior design and exhibition. The results come from an attentive and meticolous research on materials and finish, in order to obtain visual impact that satifies clients’ needs. We provide both photorealism and scenographic abstraction. I can perform the whole image generation process: from the architectural design or exhibition, to 3D modeling and image rendering.

Il progetto del rendering per l’architettura si inserisce nell’ambito della consulenza alla comunicazione del progetto. Collaboro con diversi studi di architettura, uffici tecnici ed imprese come supplier per la fornitura di immagini di alto livello comunicativo per progetti di edilizia, interior design ed allestimenti. La resa elevata dell’immagine è frutto di un’attenta e meticolosa ricerca dei materiali e finiture, al fine di ottenere un impatto visivo che soddisfi le esigenze più varie del cliente, sia nell’ambito del fotorealismo che dell’astrazione scenografica degli ambienti. Mi occupo, secondo le esigenze, dell’intero processo di sviluppo immagine: dal progetto concreto dell’architettura o dell’allestimento, alla modellazione tridimensionale, fino alla generazione dell’immagine.

Year 2012

Our thesis is an experimental application of structural generative method developed by Professors C. Blasi and G. Padovano. After studying the methodology and framing it inside the complex contemporary debate on approaches to project complexity, the team developed a project hypothesis on area between towns of Opera, Locate Triulzi and Pieve Emanuele, in the southern area of Milan. It was possible to review the territory, considered as a result of relational complexity of all flows passing by and continuously changing, identifying a set of principles. We understood actors and dynamics acting on the territory using a critical approach interpreting the reality form, obtained by an investigation of problems and potentials of the area while respecting the center of interest described by set of principles. The interpretive criticism implemented on the real world led to the formulation of a set of strategies which were able to foresee a viable and sustainable alternative to the “dominant paradigm” design, able be embodied in the relational structure of the area while generating a fluid spatial structure with an high connective complexity rather than hierarchical and specialized. This approach can be fully understood only after the rejection of global control on future dynamics of the area (not useful as well as unfeasible) and the acceptance of changing and unexpected situations, of dynamic and self-generative processes, of relational creativity typical of a complex territory.

La tesi costituisce un’applicazione sperimentale del metodo strutturale generativo elaborato dai Professori C. Blasi e G. Padovano. In seguito ad un lavoro di studio della metodologia e inquadrandola all’interno del più ampio dibattito contemporaneo sull’approccio alla complessità nel progetto, il gruppo ha sviluppato un’ipotesi progettuale rispetto all’area compresa tra i Comuni di Opera, Locate Triulzi e Pieve Emanuele, a sud di Milano. Attraverso l’individuazione di una serie di principi è stato possibile rileggere il territorio come risultante dalla complessità relazionale di tutti i flussi che lo attraversano e a cui dan forma in divenire. La comprensione degli attori e delle dinamiche presenti sul territorio si è raggiunta attraverso un approccio critico interpretativo alla forma della realtà, ottenuta tramite un’indagine sui problemi e sulle potenzialità dell’area, sempre rispetto al centro d’interesse descritto dall’insieme dei principi. La critica interpretativa attuata sul reale ha condotto alla formulazione di un’insieme di strategie che, generando un’organizzazione spaziale fluida e dall’elevata complessità connettiva anziché gerarchica e specializzata, fosse in grado di prospettare un’alternativa possibile e sostenibile alla progettazione del “paradigma dominante”, capace di calarsi nel tessuto relazionale del territorio e di vincere i problemi. Tale approccio alla disciplina può essere compreso unicamente in seguito al rifiuto della volontà di controllo globale rispetto alle dinamiche future del territorio (per altro vana in quanto irrealizzabile), sostituita dall’accettazione di situazioni mutevoli ed impreviste, di processi dinamici ed auto-generativi, della creatività relazionale tipica di un territorio complesso.

Year Activities of this lab involved transformation of marginal ares with a great attention to major urban infrastructure projects. Context of the project is the Barcelona station peripheral zone, characterized by great changes and with relation to the new high speed rail. Workshop theme was oriented to the design of a complex architectural system in relation with spatial, social and technical aspects. This was developed considering the infrastructure system as a new relational opportunity for the collectivity rather than an autonomous object. In this sense materials, shapes and techniques defined in the project were globally involved in the transformation and the definition of the architectural project.

L’attività di laboratorio ha sviluppato un progetto riguardante la trasformazione delle aree marginali, con una particolare attenzione ai grandi progetti urbani infrastrutturali. Il contesto del progetto è la zona periferica della stazione di Barcellona, caratterizzato da grandi trasformazioni e in relazione con la nuova linea dell’alta velocità. Il tema del workshop, è stato orientato alla progettazione di un organismo architettonico complesso, in relazione con gli aspetti spaziali, sociali e tecnici. Questo si è basato sulla considerazione che un sistema infrastrutturale non è un oggetto autonomo, ma piuttosto una nuova occasione relazionale per la collettività. In questo senso, i materiali, le forme e le tecniche specifiche sono stati coinvolti contemporaneamente all’operazione trasformazione e definizione del progetto architettonico.
