DYS SHELTER Marina Carretero Vallejo Construction systems IV

The pursose of this workshop was about creating an emergency shelter that could be built as quickler as possible, and with some costrains in budget, so that it could work in the environment it was created for. In the first stage we had to design the shelter taking all these concepts into account. our design was about a shelter that could be easily build adn low cost, but at the same time, it is a sustainable and self-sufficient piece of architecture.

In this very first part of the exercise, we started “playing with the modular structures of rehasa, and trying to get the bahaviour of the plaster pannels (pladur), once they were attached to the structure. For that purpose, we tried to think in a constructive way, trying to create a new detail of the joing between structurepladur with the smallest piece of structure, as seen below. After detailing all the structural parts of the shelter, we tried to figure out how the furniture could work with the same system. A trombe wall made out of the materials available was also proposed. This kind of structure was ok for a one-piece shelter, but it was difficult to grow it up. This was reason we all decided to build a shelter that could grow as needed.

While we started building the shelter we starting learning things. Not only in terms of construction, but from the very beggining we knew that not everything was thought, as the truck park, and some other details we should have taken into account. We thought it was going to be easier and we did not realize that the structure was so heavy, so we had to change some things once in the site. There were also some organization problems until we organized in groups to work with pladur and installed it in the structure. This was the hardest part, but we realized the unknown complexity that the system had. At the same time, this gave us a way of seeing it more intimate and more honest. Once we really know from first person how the system behaves, and how it works, is when we can start making some changes and trying to take full advantage of the system.
