A river is a whole system which crosses political boundaries. Duero river starts in Duero de la Sierra (Soria), in Spain at 2160m above sea level and ends in Porto, Portugal. It is one of the main rivers in Spain and Portugal and the Eresma, an afluent of El Duero, is part of the system.
Duero watershed rise of main historical cities, which are close to the rivers. It’s watershed contains a very strong agricultural importance in the Iberian Peninsula since Medieval tiemes. El Duero rise to two capitals of Spain, Burgos (1031-1085) and Valladolid (1601 to 1606). It is also very important the presence of the Romans in Spain and some of their cities, such as Segovia and Soria, and the legacy they left, such as Segovia’s Aqueduct and Soria’s chapels.

duero aquifers A region water is an important natural resource not only at a sufperficial level but undergrownd. Aquifers are necesary not only regarding reduction of explotation of superficial water explotation as well as to avoid non-source pollution. El Duero has different types of aquifers depending on the soil condition and the connexion with the river, although some of them are overlayed.
Intervention area
The area between the rivers Adaja, Eresma, Cega and Durat贸n, being Eresma our main intervention river. All of them are afluents of El Duero. Placed in Castilla y Le贸n and having a very dramatic topography, our intervention area has a green condition that we think it has to be improved.

The increasement of green areas around the Eresma, Adaja, Cega and Duraton rivers will define a new image for Castilla y Leon, with a Green Heart that connects the four spaces and the possibility of create a National Park as a tourism landmark
The creation of a big green heart in Castilla y Leon could be use to improve the energy source of the organic matter
The green fingers could also be used in order to provide resin, another natural source of energy

To turn the river system into ecological corridors though restoring the riparian woodland and a cleaning water from pollution, the strategy to consider is the improvement of the existing green areas next to the rivers. ‘Wet Parks’, would be placed along the rivers. These ‘Wet Parks’ are natural water treatmentplants working as bio-filters that would trap any pollution present in the water system. The existing pine forest in Coca (Pinus Nigra). The location of exixting National Park of ‘Las Hoces del Duratón’, and the watershed structure provides a unique opportunity from the creation of a Regional Natural Park, a massive woodland forest connecting the Ecological corridors.

Forest Carbon Bank is a new investment based on the effort to reduce carbon gas emissions, such as Methane, Carbon Dioxide..., which contribute to global warming. Nowadays private and public sectors are more and more interested in this investment because of the sustainable contribution to their own business but also because of the economical benefit that the forest bank will have in a future.

There are some countries that are already working with the Forest Carbon Bank system, and it would be a way of increment Spanish economy as well as to introduce Spain in the World Carbon Bank and their projects.

The proximity of a carbon forest bank to mayor and “must-visit” cities increases the tourist attraction in the area both national and internationally due to its connection to the capital of the city, Madrid.

being the capital of the region, it is lo cated 111km NW segovia. It is an important point due to its po pulation, location and hidrography. It is connected with Segovia and Madrid through road and train.

location where the afluent and river eresma has its end. It is surrounded by the Guada rrama mountains. Several routes are develo ped in the area. The area is known by its connifers forests and wood. Due to the natu ral environment of the area, Valsain can be included in the Eresma Route.

declared world heritage by UNESCO it is the main point of the route due to its loca tion, and its relationship between the river and the monuments of the city. It is a must to stop in Segovia, to enjoy both.

it is 50km away Segovia, and in the middle of what is known as “tierra de pinares” which will be part of the forest carbon bank. Its castle is the main touristic point in the city for being one of the best examples of spanish gothic-mudejar architecture .
