Manzano High School

What It Takes:

Being on Homecoming Court requires more than just looking good Meadow Butler 2013 In September, Manzano is busy celebrating Homecoming. There are many different activities that take place: the football game, the carnival, and the dance, but there is something that requires years of preparation: being on Homecoming Court. Many seniors have been preparing for Homecoming Court since their freshman year. Seniors must have a 2.0 GPA or higher, good attendance, no serious referrals, and must be actively involved with school programs. “It takes seniors in good standing to get on Homecoming Court.” said Helen Cortez, activities director at Manzano. It is difficult for many students to make it from freshman to senior year; only about 40% of this year’s graduated class remain from four years ago. Those who do make it to senior year and make it on Homecoming Court represent a small percentage of students. “I think I would have to say that it’s pretty hard to get onto Homecoming Court because there are so many steps that you have to go through. So I guess passing your classes and getting to your senior year is very important,” said Kathleen Heitzinger, an MHS senior, and member of this year’s Homecoming Court. At the end of junior year, students interested in Homecoming Court must fill out a packet that includes personal questions and teacher recommendations. The list of students who applied is then given to a teacher committee to narrow down the list based on the proper qualifications. Afterward, the senior class votes on eleven boys and eleven girls. The final two are chosen by the Special Education department. Many seniors who are chosen to be on Homecoming Court are often surprised. “I hadn’t expected this to happen at all, but I can say that you should never be afraid of who you are. Give it your best and give it your all!” said Heitzinger. There are many juniors already preparing for the 2012 Homecoming Court ceremony. “I am getting good grades and trying to get more involved in the school.” said Rachel Scott, MHS junior. For many Monarchs being on Homecoming Court is a great honor, and everyone involved joins an elite group of select individuals chosen to represent Manzano and all of its purple pride since 1960. 24 Monarchs were lucky enough to be on Homecoming Court this year. After all votes were counted, Justin Jew was named King and Monique Otis was named Queen, and the runnerups were Aundre Huyhn, Kerry Kortkamp, Michael Nolan, and Cassidy Velez.

Eurotrip: MHS students discover European treasures

Tyler Gallegos 2012 If you’re like most Americans, then you probably have dreams of traveling to somewhere in Europe, where such wonders as Stonehenge, the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, the St. James’s Gate Brewery, the Land of “Braveheart”, the Vatican, the Coliseum, and hundreds, if not thousands, of other international symbols of Europe await you. However, for a select group of MHS students, that dream has become a reality. Europe has much to offer in viewing historical, archeological, and architectural wonders for a once in a lifetime opportunity. Several lucky Manzano students took this ultimate field trip this past summer and many more are hoping to part of future Monarch led adventures overseas.. “My favorite part about the trip was getting some free time to roam,” said senior Brian Bustillos, who took the trip last year. All students who went on this trip were led by teacher Dan Sparago, who for the past 25 years has taken many students from several schools and including Manzano. Also another sponsor teacher of Manzano is Robanne Harrison. She along with Mr. Sparago toured the cities with the students. Although on this year’s trip the students will get to see more without feeling rushed. Last year’s trip had to be rushed slightly because the school year lasted longer due to the snow days, which altered the starting date for the flight . This caused the students to have to see each country or city in one day, rather than spend a couple of days, which was the orginal plan.. This summer’s trip consisted of 25 students who raised the money through their own means and got to go on this trip. “My greatest joy is the kids’ expressions when they see the sites of Europe,” said Mr. Sparago The cost of the trip is $5,000 and for $729 dollars more you get a three-day cruise of the Greek isles for this year’s trip. There was a mandatory organizational parent meeting September 19th in room K-206, but if still interested see Mr. Sparago. This year’s trip begins on May 30th after the end of the school term. Students spend almost two weeks in Europe traveling and sight seeing. “It would be cool to visit the old coliseums and the Italian architecture,” said senior Parker Livingston, who hopes to take part Continued on Page 4

A Light From the “Dark Side” Billy Huntsman 2012

One might think that going into “Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon” I would hold prejudices developed from hatred of the previous film in the trilogy, and one would be absolutely correct. However, one might find it odd that such prejudices have not influenced my take on the third and supposedly final film in the series, because, let’s face it, where else could the series go but up? Directed by Michael Bay, who directed the other two films, the 154-minute “Transformers 3” was released on June 29, being one of the most highly-anticipated films of this past summer. The Autobots are working in cooperation with Sector 7, an America Billy is the Paw Print’s government organization, controlling all Decepticon film critic. activity, the focus of which is now upon finding the Pillars, a means for creating a Space Bridge, allowing for the teleportation of matter between two points, which act as the Cybertronian equivalent to the atomic bomb in ending the war between the Autobots and Decepticons. The Autobots’ goal is to prevent the Decepticons’ retrieval of the Pillars. The film’s plot is simpler compared to the second’s, which had me begging for subtitles a half hour in, and simply because of that my opinion of the film immediately became positive. The film, like the other two and for which I applaud the series, is chockfull of comedic relief, which is essential, as an audience would be unforgiving of three films, each roughly two and a half hours long, that are as bland and dry as “The English Patient”. Most of the actors and actresses in the film are the familiars from the previous two: Shia LaBeouf still plays Sam Witwicky, now somewhere in his twenties, struggling to find a job that will help repair

Cheers for “Gears”!

Bree Vargas 2013 “Gears of War 3” was developed by Epic Games, and after accessing the beta code, gamers can spend some quality time (often days at a time) with the game’s four new maps, three new game modes, and new improved weapons. How could you not love this? All the best of the previous two has made it into the third addition in the series, and any changes have been made for the better. Although much brighter than the others, “GOW3” still maintains a “dirty” environment, but probably not as much as you would expect. The more spacious maps are a bit reminiscent of “Bulletstorm”, another Epic Games production released back in February. In the beta, Epic debuted four new maps: Thrashball, Checkout, Old Town, and Trenches. Thrashball takes place in a rundown Thrashball court where either team can gain control of the center of the map, making it virtually impossible to lose the match. Checkout is another name the origins of which we can only guess at, and it takes place in a hardware store that is perfect for players who enjoy close combat and duckand-cover tactics between reloads. Old Town is a European-inspired villa that is at the verge of collapsing, but with that you have many hiding spots and backalleys that can be used to flank the opposing team. Trenches is a madhouse with a bunch of corners behind which enemies can hide, and this map will definitely make you question whether or not rushing is the best strategy to use. Along with the new maps, the beta also shows off three different games modes: King of the Hill, Capture the Leader, and Team Deathmatch. King of the Hill will remind you of “Gears of War 2”’s annex, where there

his ego, fractured by a lack of appreciation from the general population for Sam having saved their lives; Josh Duhamel returns now as Lt. Colonel William Lennox; Tyrese Gibson now as Air Force Chief Robert Epps; John Turturro as eccentric, vaguely obnoxious though altogether likeable exSector 7 operative now turned bestselling author Seymour Simmons; and, yes, even Kevin Dunn and Julie White as Sam’s parents, Ron and Judy, who make the most of their five minutes of screentime; Peter Cullen as the voice of Optimus; and Hugo Weaving (“The Lord of the Rings”, “V for Vendetta”) as Megatron. The audience is also introduced to several new characters, primarily: Victoria Secret-model and acting noob Rosie Huntington-Whiteley as Carly Spencer, Sam’s new girlfriend after Mikaela (Megan Fox) dumped him like a bad habit for reasons unexplained in the film; Charlotte Mearing (Frances McDormand, “Fargo”) as the nearly-totalitarian overseer of Sector 7; Dylan Gould (Patrick Dempsey, Dr. McDreamy in “Grey’s Anatomy”) as Carly’s extremely successful and daring racecar driver boss, whom Sam comes to resent both for his success and his incessant interest in Carly; Jerry Wang (Ken Jeong, “The Hangover” and “Part II”), Sam’s paranoid and possibly delusional superior; Bruce Brazos, portrayed by John Malkovich (“Red”, “Being John Malkovich”, and who I was ineffably delighted to see), as Sam’s boss in his lackluster and unfulfilling job as paper-and-errand boy for Brazos’ computer company; and even Buzz Aldrin has a quick little tidbit as himself. As for the voice actors, try to not wet yourselves, all you Trekkies out there, but Leonard Nimoy provides the voice for Sentinel Prime, Optimus’ predecessor as leader of the Autobots. The film, in stark contrast to its predecessor, does a number of things well. For example, the sound has been meticulously edited to allow for the audience to be engulfed by the action but not to the point where they feel like they’re at a Slayer concert; the quality of the action is in near-equal measure to that of the dialogue; and the film, on the whole, has a dual focus on special effects and on the quality of the story, which is why the prior film was so revolting to me--where I value story high above anything else, Michael

Bay and the production team had tunnel vision as it pertains to appearances. And speaking of its effects, the film was shot on a budget of $195 million, $5 million less than “Transformers 2”, which I think is quite impressive, given that the film looks like a million bucks. The transformations of the Autobots and Decepticons and their battle sequences are clear and distinct, choreographed to a tee, and smooth and flowing. What really struck me as great as I watched this film was LaBeouf’s performance, varying from comedic to dramatic and everything in between, unlike any of his previous work and a far cry from Louis Stevens. From this role, LaBeouf needs to rise, instead of continuing down the banal plateau of roles like “Holes” or “Disturbia” or “Eagle Eye”. He could be a terrific actor if only he’d branch out. The only areas I can find to criticize are probably the criticisms that most people have, too: one, in the midst of the battle sequences, it’s difficult to determine who is an Autobot and who is a Decepticon; and, two, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is tenfold as annoying, detestable, and uncharismatic as Megan Fox ever was, and, to boot, she’s English and is not shy of flinging that accent around! But these are hardly any reasons to not like the film as a whole. While no “Dark Knight” or “Schindler’s List”, the film is certainly not the worst ever made, and not even the worst Bay has ever directed--that distinction belongs either to “Pearl Harbor” or “Bad Boys II”. In short, the film is a remarkable improvement and rather enjoyable.

are two teams—the COG and the Locust—and if a player gets killed he will automatically respawn after up to fourteen seconds. Capture the Leader is just like Capture the Flag, trying to capture the leader.

Bree is the Paw Print’s video game critic The best part about this third mode is that you can use the leader as a shield against the opposing enemy, to protect your own leader from being captured. Team Deathmatch has been tweaked a tad bit to where it depends on nothing but teamwork. Instead of the usual rushing to rack up kills, each team gets a total of fifteen respawns—shared with the rest of the team. The first team to use up all of their respawns loses. Players should expect tension on the losing teams, and expect new and inexperienced players to be trashed for being the weakest link and causing the team unnecessary respawns. If you’ve ever played “GOW2”, you’d remember how frustrating it was to navigate through the menus during online gameplay. Well, thanks to “GOW3”, that has changed! The beta gets around that problem with a new tap-versus-hold system that allows you to tap a button to perform quick

actions, like picking up ammo, reviving teammates, and killing enemies quickly. Holding down multiple buttons helps with performing execution-kills and picking up new weapons and such. Just like “Call of Duty”, “Gears” allows you to gain experience points by racking up kills and winning online matches. Although leveling up is a slow process in the beta, it is expected to get easier in the actual game, released September 20th, with more rewards. Epic has also put in effort to make sure the title is accessible to new players. Most of the controls are pretty intuitive and easy to figure out, but not all of them. Veteran players will have no problem jumping right in and scoring enough points and kills to unlock all the goodies “GOW3” has to offer. Last but not least, the graphics are improved and the new weapons have added onto the third installment to make

it an almost completely new experience for followers of the series. This game is a must buy! “GOW3” will definitely be a top-seller for fans of third-person shooters.

Critics’ Corner Nothin’s Gonna Change My World: Amanda Sims breaks down the new book “Across the Universe” B

Amanda Sims 2012 Ever dreamed of traveling in space? Ever dreamed of living on a planet within our galaxy just like Earth? Ever dreamed of leaving it all behind for a fresh start? Those dreams weren’t on the top of Amy’s to-do list. She wasn’t even signed up for it, but she was still sent on the journey anyway. Here’s the catch—she has to be frozen for a three hundred year trek out into space to find a planet that parallels Earth in its sustenance of life. When people hear the phrase “sci-fi” they immediately think of two things: Star Wars, or Star Trek. While Beth Ravis Amanda is the Paw does not include beaming Print’s book critic up to the Enterprise or lightsabers in her novel, that doesn’t mean the book should be counted out. Amy’s parents signed up to enjoy life on a new planet. Both their jobs—genetic splicing and the military—are essential on the new planet. Amy, on the other hand, has no need to hop planets other than an unconditional love for her parents. So she takes the plunge, leaving her boyfriend, her best friends, and the rest of her family on Earth while she and her parents are frozen and stuffed onto a space journey that will take an estimated three hundred years to reach its destination. But when she is woken up before her time has come, Amy’s life is flipped upside down—and that’s even before she learns about how crazy the ship’s current leader is and about the person trying to kill her. The thing I love most about Ravis’ novel (the first in a trilogy) is that it is not purely chock full of sappy, pointless romance with no moral behind the story. Most literature teens today read is nothing but that. Ravis, on the other hand, introduces a whole new perspective on things and gives her readers quite the ride in the process. Behind the mask of the story, Ravis is making a comment on society. It is similar to Aldous Huxley’s “Brave New World” in the sense that there are people living on the ship, keeping it up and running until it reaches its destination and then are forced into a utopian world that closely resembles a super model—pristine and perfect on the outside while there are dangerous underlying problems underneath the surface. “The Feeders thought differently. They were happy, content to plow fields and shear sheep. They never seemed to feel the walls of the ship cave in around them…” (Page 35). Ravis uses emphasis as well as point of view very well. She switches between the two main characters— Amy and Elder, a boy who has lived his whole life on the ship and has been formed like clay to become the next leader in years to come. She does a great job of alternating point of views at the precise moment in which to build tension and suspense in a wonderfully creative way. Also, she strayed from some—not all, but some— of the most cliché sci-fi details. For example, all the people living on the ship had a wireless intercom system implanted in their ears at birth, and instead of elevators used to access different decks on the ship, Grav Tubes, or more accurately, anti-gravitational tubes, take them anywhere they need to go. The only bad thing I have to say about “Across the Universe” is that Ravis knew who her target audience was. While most would argue this is a good thing, I disagree to a certain extent. When you abbreviate words like “perfect” into “perf,” for example, it encourages the rest of the teenage population to continue abbreviating already short enough words. Beth Ravis’ hit new novel is a beautiful depiction of how brutal transitions, and life in general, can be. The constant mystery leaves readers craving more of Amy and Elder’s universe. *Favorite quote: “The weekend before we were frozen, Mom and Daddy and I stayed up all night watching ancient sci-fi movies—Star Trek and Star Wars and Star-something else. I envisioned everyone wearing uniforms or with crazy hair or something, but I’m wearing stuff that could have been made for a Renaissance fair” (page 119).

EDM: Not just a fad, but a culture David Jio 2013

Multi-colored light beams sweep across the preceeding ocean. A mass of human faces stares bewildered at the display screen flickering to life. Thirty feet away, a hovering window of insight into the rising emotions inside them, biting anticipation. For a brief moment, all seems frozen. With the touch of a button and turn of the steering wheel, liftoff commences. A drum beat pounds into the crowd. As the rhythms begin to build and the waves of synthesized bliss wash over the crowd, the light begins to spin, rotate, and bounce in time, producing a wondrous sight. Without warning, the assault transfigures into an explosion of color and emotion as the bodies of the explorers begin to fluctuate and move in tandem with the music they love so very much; EDM, or electronic dance music. Although the poetic description above was clearly a romanticized account of the splendor of an electronic music show, the same energies that fill venues are spreading across the world inside the minds of the listeners through the rapid ascension of multiple staple electronic genres appealing to many listeners to many different types of audial escape; be it the stomping annihilation delivered by modern dubstep, the core-shaking futurism of drum’n’bass, or the infectious grooves of electro house, EDM’s appeal is far and sweeping

across the listening spectrum. The sweeping musical craze that is electronic music has undoubtedly pounced on the unsuspecting minds of many musical connoisseurs, dance lovers, and other people of every walk of life and luster, with its many forms easily enticing fans of all types of music and opening their minds to other musical ideas with the endless number of fusions and gateway artists. Brandon Luna, MHS junior, believes that EDM helps the youth gain “more appreciation of music, understanding beyond just lyrics, and a deeper experience with music in

David is the Paw Print’s music reviewer general…the music makes you want to move, it makes you want to break free, and live in the moment just for a while.” Electronic music is, at its core, an easily adaptable and versatile genre, and the rush of energy that it provides regardless of its subgenre is quickly allowing itself a widespread appreciation; including among today’s youth, namely via unforgettable producers such as Skrillex, Deadmau5, and Benny Benassi. Teenagers identify with and have certainly helped propel EDM to its current reign as such a huge genre. “I think rebellion has a lot to do with it. Rock, metal,

and rap were all different ways that different cultures identified themselves and rebelled against the norms, and since the late 90’s and early 2000’s are all about electronics and technology, it’s only natural that this is what our generation wants to identify itself with to rebel,” said Brian Boney, an MHS senior and EDM enthusiast. With artists such as Skrillex playing festivals such as Electric Daisy Carnival with audiences of more than 230,000, it’s clear that EDM is a force to be reckoned with. But with such exposure and widespread popularity, a controversial aspect of “rave” culture has reared its head to the horror of parents everywhere. The dance music culture has long been associated with hedonist sexuality and drug use; “rave” outfits worn by women at EDM shows can often be rather revealing, an example sometimes questionably followed by underage teenagers, while the use of designer drugs at events can lead to controversy and negative connections in the minds of wary parents of children enamored with EDM. “Teens, especially young ones, have lost a good bit of self-respect. You don’t have to dress up in skimpy clothes just to enjoy a rave. If you have to do that kind of thing, at least wait till you’re 18!” said Boney. The popular use of the euphoric entactogenic stimulant drug MDMA, known popularly as ecstasy,

X, or E, is a large factor in the vilification of the rise of EDM, due in part to its widespread availability at events but also due to the drug’s lack of purity; most ecstasy doses are cut with other cheaper drugs to cut costs, such as cocaine or heroin. This isn’t to say that drug use is encouraged at events; performers tend to discourage use of drugs in favor of enjoying the music; a view shared by rave veterans who believe in the PLUR philosophy (Peace Love Unity Respect), a view that focuses on the love of the music over using the events as excuses for inebriation. “If a kid is into, say, rap instead of EDM, he will still be in a culture that promotes drug use. Negative influences are all around. I don’t think all ages should be allowed to attend EDM shows and festivals though; there should be an age limit. Drugs and alcohol are associated with a lot of other things besides ‘raves’,” Boney said. “Know your limits.”

Q&A With Coach Ocampo Edwin Rodriguez 2012

Q: What did you see the problem was with last year’s defense, particularly during the state championship game? A: Obviously we didn’t play well; we gave up too many points. Q: Watching the film from the state championship game, what problems did you see? A: We as a defense didn’t adjust in the right positions. We were not physical enough at the beginning of the game. They were good; they knew exactly what we were doing. Q: What do you think of this year’s new defense? A: I really like it. I like the way we are attacking, and we are really dictating the offense instead of the offense dictating us.

Coach Ocampo along with MHS Varsity football is shouldering the load of Monarch Glory. Photo courtesy of Tyler Gallegos Manzano had one of its best football seasons last year, as they made it all the way to the state championship game. The Paw Print recently spoke with Varsity head coach Aaron Ocampo to discuss how the team looks and how it is building on last year’s success.

Q: What changes have you made this year with the defensive strategies? A: We are a three-down instead of a four-down, the possibilities now are greater. Q: We are now a month into the season and the defense is playing really well. How have this year’s players improved their defense? A: There are a lot of improvements still to be made. This defense allows quickness and aggressiveness for our players. Our players have worked hard since March and I know they’re smart.

False Alarm...Again Sean Cairns 2012 Students felt a familiar feeling a few weeks ago when the school’s fire alarm sounded and they evacuated to the outside of the school, only to find out, after an hour or so of waiting, that it was a false alarm. “Safety is our main priority,” said Tony Carillo, Manzano assistant principal. While a gas leak is not as dangerous as a fire, it still poses a major threat to students exposed to it, which is why students must be evacuated, especially when the leak is not an isolated incident. The last two leaks where students were present were both false alarms. The first, last year’s, had an unknown cause. The second was caused by something blowing across the school rather than a leak in any of

the lines. Mr. Carillo said that he guessed that the smell was wafting from the East side of campus from above or potentially inside Wilson Stadium. “Somebody maybe opened a tank of something,” said Mr. Carillo. Despite the fact that it came on the breeze from another source, Mr. Carillo does not suspect that it is a prank. Unlike other emergencies, such as a fire, a gas leak requires some amount of assessment before a fullfledged evacuation is called. In the case of the most recent evacuation, the office received calls from all across campus, which led to the evacuation response. The only actual gas leak that occurred while students

in this year’s adventure. Each of the students who go will enjoy 17 days on this trip if they did not also pay for the three-day extra cruise. The kids will visit London and Paris for three days each, Florence, Rome, and Athens for two days each, Sorrento and Patras for one day each. “I think it is cool to see all the ethnic backgrounds, and getting to see the world,” explained junior Matt Brenner. Students go through guided tours of the cities, as well as museums, learning about the cultures and plenty more to allow for the ultimate Europe experience. This trip also allows for the students to learn responsibility while experiencing the world and, more importantly, leaving the nest. “The kids mature, learn life skills, and history,” further explained Ms. Sparago. The students will spend a minimum amount of two to three days in each place, and visit the many famous sites and get to see architectural buildings, such as the Eiffel Tower and Big Ben. “The Eiffel Towel is a tourist trap, but I found a delightful romance about it,” explained Ms. Harrison. All the students who have taken this trip before with Sparago and Harrison say that it is a worthwhile trip that helps to broaden the minds of the students outside of the classroom for a real world history lesson. “I enjoyed experiencing all of the different cultures and learning as well as living it” said junior Cody DeFrates, a 2011 participant. For more information on the Europe trip see Mr. Sparago in room K-206.

were on campus was in 1997, when construction workers building the music building hit the main line causing large amounts of gas to escape. Even in this instance, only classes in E-hall were evacuated based on the direction of the wind and the relatively remote location of the leak. There was another actual leak, which ironically took place after the evacuation last year. While inspecting the gas lines, the fire department accidentally broke one of the gas lines. Mr. Carillo said it was a good thing that the incident happened with personnel from both PNM and the fire department there.

strange injury

Football players, like other athletes, understand that everytime they step on the field the threat of being injured is real. For Skyler Walker it wasn’t the fact that he was injured that surprised him, but how he was injured. Walker, a wide receiver on MHS varsity football team, was having a productive night catching passes when all of a sudden he noticed blood from his arm. During a Saturday night football game at Milne Stadium against Rio Grande High school, Walker, #16, received a gash to his right arm when tackled by a Rio Grande player during the second quarter. “I thought I was going to lose my arm which would have led to me losing the season,” said Walker. “I felt pain but it didn’t hurt as much as I thought it would”. Walker went out for a pass and caught the ball in the middle of the field. He started to run with the ball and hit #22 head-on. Four to five guys jumped on him after being tackled. After seeing blood streaming down his arm, he got up, gave the ball to the referee, and ran off the field. “I went to go get a drink and when I came back my friend, Diore James, told me what happened. I was really scared,” said Samantha McCants, Walker’s girlfriend. Walker was taken to the hospital around 6 pm and got out at 12 am with 16 stitches. With blood coming down his arm, he was unable to drive himself to the hospital. “My mommy drove me,” said Walker with a smile. Nothing else is known about #22, the player who tackled Walker. Also, it’s not really known how the gash on his arm came to be. APS reported the incident to be an accident. This hasn’t been the first occasion where Walker has needed stitches. During his summer, on Memorial weekend, he was in a car accident. The car flipped over five times and resulted in him getting 40 stitches. The stitches were on his back, head, ear and even again on the same right arm. He was coming back from Phoenix and in the car with him was his povault coach. At the moment, Walker’s arm is doing well and healing. He’s still participating in football. “I just wrap it with tape and wear an elbow pad thing,” said Walker. The final score of that Saturday night’s game was 46-6 for Manzano to take the victory.

enormous effects on the state’s economy. APS is the second largest employer in Albuquerque, with approximately 14 thousand employees. Unfortunately, the combined monetary reserves of APS--$17 million--are not enough for even a single payroll. That means that cutting the budget will result in the loss of careers in other places in APS. “When you cut our budget, you cut people,” said Winston Brooks, APS superintendent Brooks is in his fourth year as superintendent and is now tasked with finding solutions to the growing problem. At the current state, schools only had to trim their budget by five percent, but when one considers that 89% of the total budget goes to salary, one sees what Mr. Brooks is saying. The thing that most students are concerned with is what will become of some of their favorite electives. The

closing of electives is based on enrollment and not on budget issues. For example, AP Chemistry and Shakespeare are not offered this year because too few students signed up for either class. Other electives, like Food Services, are more reliant on fundraising than on a budget, as these classes get the majority of their funding through grants. Unlike the other classes, these classes have not seen a drop in enrollment. “If we’re low on money, we’ll just do more fundraisers,” said Heather Gillespie, MHS Culinary Arts and Food Services teacher. Other classes, such as Newspaper, sell ad space to acquire funds. Overall, most students don’t seem to be worried about the new budget. However, it would be hard not notice that classrooms across MHS are a lot more crowded. Live it, Love it, Own it

Maria Griego 2014 Chronic disorganization is a plague ravaging not only this country, but also the whole world! From misplaced papers to faulty calculators, to printers that devour ink with more voracity than a RV guzzles gas at just that precise moment when you need them to print out that all-important essay…yes, disorganization may very well be the death of the world and humanity as we know it. But never fear, for AVID is here! So what can an average student do to reach their goals for success? Not only can AVID increase organization, but it also shows future opportunities. Some of Manzano’s students are in their first year in AVID, and the students who have already taken the class are helping the former along. “I think it would be a good idea to have a second year in AVID, to go into classes with first year AVID students to show them what is expected,” said Mrs. Huynh and one of her AVID classes doing tutorials. Spanglish America or not. Actual American citizens who “looked Mariah Chavez 2014 It drives me up the wall when I watch the news, hear others’ conversations or read articles online and all I hear is how illegal immigrants are stealing American jobs and how they need to learn English beacause this is America! What the heck? About two years ago, there was a big deal involving illegal immigrants in the state of Arizona; basically throw out every illegal Mexican, not caring what they want just as long as it wasn’t in Arizona. This caused a huge outrage from many people, myself included. Officers who saw anyone who looked like an illegal immigrant were demanded to ask them for their personal papers, anytime, anywhere, no matter if the officers themselves felt comfortable with it

Where would we stand if it weren’t for immigrants? Many of them come to the United States in search for better lives, living conditions, and jobs for themselves along with their families. Yes, I’ve heard countless times that illegal immigrants are taking American jobs and people think this is unfair. Immediate blame goes to immigrants when some American guy complains because he can’t find a job. However, this is wrong in a big sense. I am not an immigrant but I strongly believe as I

I’m sure almost everyone likes to spend their time on the weekend watching a brand new movie. You go to the movies because you want to enjoy the film you’ve been waiting for forever. You’re going to the movies to ENJOY the film. But does trash ALL around you make you happy? My point is that it freaks me out.A cinema is a place where a lot of people go. It’s not your house, so you cannot throw the trash wherever you wantt. I realize that laziness is not the best part of us, but still we should think of each other, and, first of all, we should respect ourselves. Do you respect yourself by throwing trash around? I should hope not! Remember going to the movies: just a minute ago a great movie ended, you’re in high spirits, and surprise! You have to go through the billions of wrappers, pieces of popcorn, and something else you hope to high heaven is spilled soda. You probably aren’t in the best of moods now. Did you know that chewing gum in Singapore is illegal? The ban was created because people stuck gum under places like chairs or tables, or threw it anywhere except the trash. That is one of the reasons why the country is so clean. First, people understand that it’s better to live in a clean and pleasant place; and second, the citizens of Singapore are afraid to make it dirty. Do we want our government to use these ways to make our streets and businesses cleaner? I don’t think so. I hope that someday people will understand that it’s disrespectful for everyone, including yourself, to throw the trash wherever they want and act like it’s acceptable, because it’s not.

where to begin with this issue. We have all seen it, in schools, outside of school, you name it. It is a progressive problem here at Manzano. As young ladies we should all have more respect for ourselves not only in the clothes we wear but also in the way we act. As for the gentlemen, you should all have more respect for the girl you are with by treating her chivalrously and not having your hands all over her. PDA is upsetting. To see teenagers groping each other while sucking face, especially in a public place such as a high school

hope others do too, that if someone wants to be in America, they CAN and SHOULD be! They shouldn’t have to worry about everyone wrongly judging them. Yes, there are illegal drugs brought to America by illegal immigrants, but Americans sell illegal drugs and commit crimes everyday, but we’re not kicking them out of the country. The vast majority of those who immigrate here are people who just want a better life, who just have a dream. In this economy these days I know how tough it is to find work, but we have to blame this joblessness on our country as a whole and not find others to point fingers at. Some companies find it easier to hire immigrants because some will work for little money and don’t complain about getting their hands

is a disgrace. We cannot deny the fact that there is going to be PDA everywhere in life, but do we have to see it while walking down the halls, or through the student center to get to class? I just do not understand why anyone would want to degrade themselves by taking part in this action. Now don’t get me wrong, it is an awesome feeling to have a guy walk me to class or sneak a kiss in here and there; however there is no need to spend your entire lunch hour with your tongue down your partner’s throat. I have no problem with couples expressing their “love” or devotion toward

one another, but my goodness there is a difference between sweet affectionate kissing and groping! So many adolescents claim to be “in love” with the person they are with, but chances are most high school flings don’t make it through a semester of school, and even that is pushing it. As students, children, whatever you prefer to call yourselves, you are a reflection of your parents. By taking part in this “trend” not only are you reflecting upon yourself but also on your parents. Any girl who is willing to let a guy treat her like this, or vice versa, should really reevaluate not only their relationship but also who they have become or are becoming as a person. Some actions should be saved for

Asomugha vs. Revis

Rafael Ruiz 2013 There has been some arguments on who the best cornerback in the NFL is. The fight is between Nnamdi Asomugha of the Eagles and Darrelle Revis of the Jets. Many people would say that Revis is better than Asomugha, but in my opinion Nnamdi is way better. Nnamdi Asomugha has the stats. He’s been in the league for 9 years; he has 311 total tackles, 272 of those are tackles he made by himself, and 39 were assists. He has an average of 2.0 sacks, 11 interceptions for 69 yards and one touchdown, and two forced fumbles. Revis has been in the league for five years, he has 237 total tackles, 197 of those are by him and 40 are assists. He has one sack, 15 interceptions for 199 yards and two touchdowns, two forced fumbles, and recovered five. Yes, the stats are almost exactly alike but, Nnamdi has made more tackles than almost any corner in the league. He would have more interceptions but no quarterback throws his way because they are afraid him. When you throw it Nnamdi’s way it’s either going to be incomplete or intercepted. For Revis, he has less experience but many interceptions. Many QB’s will throw his way but because he is easy to trick. Take the game against the Dallas Cowboys Sunday night on September 11: Dez Bryant beat him on so many plays and took the ball away from Revis. Bryant owned Revis Island, something hardly any wide receiver can do. Not to diss on Darrelle Revis, but he has lack of experience and still needs some help in coverage. On the other hand, nobody has ever owned Nnamdi Asomugha. If the receiver caught the ball in front of Nnamdi, he would either knock out the ball or knock out the receiver. In conclusion, Darrelle Revis and Nnamdi Asomugha are the best, any team would be lucky to have these corner backs. But Nnamdi Asomugha in my opinion is still the best corner.

Editorials Pro-Choice

Meadow Butler 2013 When you’re a teenager in high school and you become pregnant, there are many options: abortion, keep the baby or put it up for adoption. There are a lot of people who are against abortion and think poorly of those who consider that an option. I believe in prochoice and no one should be treated differently for their decisions. I think that anyone should be able to make their own choices, especially when it comes to pregnancy. It’s your body for one and you shouldn’t feel bad for the decisions you make. If it was me, I wouldn’t want someone judging me or trying to make me do what they wanted just because it’s “the moral thing” to do. Everyone has decisions in life, and it only makes it harder on a person when people aren’t there to support you every step of the way. Some women get abortions because they don’t care, which I don’t agree with, but on the other hand, there are many teens in high school who can’t take care of a child. Many people stand outside Planned Parenthood every day to protest against abortion, and there are many people all over the world, including Manzano, who think it’s immoral. They say you are “killing a human being.” Granted, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but at the first few months of a pregnancy, the fetus is only a bunch of tissue cells, and nothing more. Most people don’t know this fact, and they become upset whenever something against their belief is brought up. Some people, who are against abortion, say rude and hateful things that are uncalled for, and it can make you feel terrible. Think of it like this: if men were having babies, do you think people would be telling them what to do with their bodies? No, they wouldn’t. I’m not saying I’m for abortion or that I’m against, just merely stating that anyone should be able to make their own choice and not be judged or put down because of it. So instead of getting upset or mad at someone who believes abortion is a choice to consider, you should keep your opinion to yourself. If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.

David Jio 2013 The advent of the homecoming assembly is a marvelous amalgamation of reminiscence, reflection, and celebration of the promises of a bright future for those on the court. Indeed, school spirit blossoms in this proud display of student-body unity and glistening inspiration. Except, of course, for the students who don’t want to be there. Homecoming assemblies can prove to be lengthy affairs that can be an annoyance and disruption in the day if one would rather not be attending and would rather be catching up on homework or socializing with friends; which are the options with most other assemblies. The gymnasium in which the celebration takes place is always packed with students, and heavily monitored by administration. The crowd is deafening as the staff tries to silence those unruly students who fail to pipe down in favor of allowing the ceremony to begin. The administrators are often forced to scan the crowd for troublemakers and those holding conversation rather than paying attention to the speeches, skits, and slideshows that so enamor their peers. However could this elaborate ceremony be streamlined to allow it to begin earlier and minimize disruption? The answer is clear, and it’s already being used by the school for most every assembly except this one: make it optional. Most of the other assemblies that take place at MHS are optional to attend; if a loud group of students don’t want to go and sit through the activites of said assembly, they can always head down to the cafeteria to sit and socialize and release their energy in an environment that allows them to do so healthily and while still abiding by school rules. Another benefit of optional assemblies is that students can instead choose an educational option; going to the library to read, study, or do homework. This gives students a chance to take advantage of what the educational system was built to provide: an environment for learning and scholarly advancement. Why then, after the majority of the other assemblies offering these options for students, is the Homecoming assembly a mandatory one? The answer to this question is shockingly unclear; the only vague shadow of an answer that appears to stand in opposition is that homecoming assemblies are meant to bolster school spirit. This reasoning is bewildering considering the circumstances. Consider the logic here: a group of friends who aren’t involved with Homecoming or school spirit or events at all are expected to go to an assembly against their will and be swamped with school spirit, and these conditions are supposed to accumulate until the unwitting students become rah-rah Monarchs and embrace the school pride they only an hour and a half earlier were so outrageously indifferent to? Assemblies can be fun outings for those who want to take part in them, but making an assembly such as Homecoming mandatory with no real reason for it to be so is only detrimental to the atmosphere for the students with school spirit and to the attitudes of those without.

Pro-Life

Tyler Gallegos 2012 Life has its hardships; everyone knows that there are days where you’re jumping for joy, and others that just make life not worth living. “We each owe a death; there are no exceptions; but, oh God, sometimes the Green Mile seems so long,” says Paul Edgecomb in the film “The Green Mile”. This is true for many who have to make the choice of life or death. In this, case who says who should have the power to say if someone should live or die; nobody should, especially when it comes to the life of a baby who hasn’t even seen the light of day. This has been an argument for decades; should abortion be legal? Abortion started small, first practiced in small states under the protection of their laws until finally the amendment was passed that made abortion legal. Women were given the choice to end a pregnancy, and ever since controversy has followed close behind. However, who should have the power to end life before it can begin? In my opinion nobody should. I once got a forward text from a friend, and let me tell you I’m not a huge fan of forwards but this one hit home. The text was a baby in the womb talking to his mom, saying how happy he was. “Oh mommy, I love you so much. You’re so amazing” explained one of the lines. The baby would go on talking about how excited and happy he was to have an amazing mom and get to live life. He began asking questions like “Mommy, why are you so sad? Mommy, who are all these people?” Then he exclaimed, “Mommy, these people are hurting me, make them stop! Mommy help!” That was the last

Mad Hatters

line from the baby because his mom had an abortion. Many people say that it is good for women to have the choice for an abortion. Some go through rough patches in life and make this choice even though it’s a hard one to make, which we can all agree upon. Experts are divided on whether or not abortion is good-in terms of population control--or bad--for obvious philosophical and humane reasons. Everyone has a choice; but nobody should have the power to choose if someone lives or dies. Sure, lots of people have rough times in their lives, but don’t we all? No one would argue that all lives aren’t of the same difficulty level, and who says we are perfect? But whoever said we have the power to give or take life? Nobody has that right nor are they entitled to that kind of power. There is no true solution to this on going argument than to put away all of our passionate words of wisdom and ask ourselves one question: is this right? Because at the end of the day, nothing is gained except that we lost a person who could have been the next Michael Jordan or Albert Einstein. In the end we rob someone of their chance to live. Having power and knowing how to use it are two different things entirely; but this power is not ours to control or use. Life is not a game; it is a beautiful thing, and even though we all face hardships we must all come together and say “It will get better.” Life may have its ups and downs, but when that sun sets there will always be another tomorrow when it rises for a new day to be born.

Billy Huntsman 2012 Recently I watched a George Carlin comedy special and in it he had a short bit on society and headgear. It wasn’t necessarily for or against headgear—just a social commentary—but it got me thinking about this topic, and it really got my chromosomes all in a tangle. We’re not supposed to wear hats indoors or during a national anthem. Why? What is so offensive about wearing a Guinness cap while singing “The StarSpangled Banner”? Is it the stark contrasts of America and Ireland suddenly coming to the forefront of society’s combined consciousness? Going off that logic, should we who wear shirts with the emblem of the Emerald Isle or you who wear your Irish soccer (football) jerseys remove them before singing? I don’t know about the rest of you, but seeing me shirtless would be infinitely more offensive than me wearing a hat during the anthem. Now I get it if you’re wearing a hat that says “(insert expletive here) you!” but a Cookie Monster hat? Or a Jets hat? I don’t get it. If you know me, you know I don’t wear hats—before my ‘fro made it look like I was smuggling possums over the border; now my dome is so oddly flat that it looks like I’m wearing a stocking cap—so, like George Carlin, I don’t give a handbasket of Malaysian kittens whether you wear hats or not. It doesn’t offend me when you wear them indoors, during the anthem, or at any other time, I don’t care! So why should anyone else? If you personally have a scar on your head from where your significant other fired an arrow from a crossbow at you, and you’re embarrassed by it—therefore you wear the hat—does anyone have the right to make you take it off, thus revealing the embarrassing scar? Now barring everyone who tips their hats to any side or wears them any other way but the traditional way—you individuals sicken me and I could write an explanation as to why the size of the Bible—hats are pretty inoffensive and I honestly cannot believe we as a society are concerned with the wearing and removal of hats during ceremonies or in places which society deems as inherently deserving respect, when we have so many other things to be worried about—I won’t go into any of them, mostly because I hate discussing politics more than almost anything else. The solution? All you people who have nothing better to do than to pick-pick-pick at society need to listen to “Super Freak” and roll your shoulders and release...just like they tell you to in pilates. So wear hats; don’t wear hats; who cares? Super freaky!

to the possibility that their anger may have inadvertently been the cause of their troubles. For instance, in my history class this year, we watched a film about 9/11. In this film, there were some people on the streets telling the camera in harsh tones that the people who staged the attacks were animals, and that they did not deserve to live on this Earth. They said that we should eliminate them, and pulverize them like they did to us. I understand where this statement comes from; we were all in pain that fateful day,

but is that really the best way to act in response? This is the kind of anger that starts wars. In a roundabout way, it is necessary, but not at all in the extremes it has been brought to now. We wish pain and suffering on our attackers- but what does that help, really? If we bounce back stronger and take the choice not to react so rashly, it shows a sort of maturity. I don’t know how to make people less angry, less vengeful. But I think if that method could be found the world would be so much nicer to live in. Why is anger so important? I think it serves as an escape for excess stress and emotions; it is certainly one of the easiest emotions to give into. Perhaps that is why, as teenagers, some of us constantly curse like drunken sailors. But even so, we can’t control much that we are angry about. Is that why we’re so angry? Keeping up with the expectations of everyone else is a daily uphill competition. Someone always seems better than you. That’s just how it goes. And so, anger results.
