Casey Smith World News Editor 2010

Countdown of the Top Ten Stories of the Year #10Todd Parkins Tragedy

The loss of well-known and respected Albuquerque police officer Todd Parkins hit the community hard. Memorials were held both at MHS and around the community to remember him. Here at MHS, numerous events were organized to raise money for scholarships for Parkins’ children, since they are future Monarchs. A “glow dance,” haunted house, and classroom donations boxes were all part of the effort to help a highly regarded and dearly missed officer’s family. This was probably the saddest thing to occur at MHS this year. This story also got a lot attention from the media all over the state. This tragedy afftected many lives and shook the MHS community.

#9 New Athletic Director

At the end of last school year, Brent Tomlinson left Manzano High School and Bob Kelly was his replacement. Mr. Kelly has done a lot for the Monarchs this year and is looking towards the future. Next year, Kelly is providing a new school back board for the gym along with new additions to the gym lobby. MHS athletics looks like it has a bright future. The incoming senior class is known as one of the more athletic classes to come to Manzano in recent years. For example, both the boys and girls basketball teams should be ranked high all year. This along with the addtions Kelly is bringing to MHS should lead to an exciting sports year. Kelly is one of the more experienced athletic directors in the city, and we are fortunate to have him.

#8 Retiring Teachers Every year teachers retire all over APS. Unfortunately for Manzano, several great teachers are retiring this year. These teachers are Shelley Epstein (15 years at MHS), Gayla Robertson (15 years at MHS), Bruce Raymond (16 years at MHS), and Jose Lucero (27 years at MHS). They will be missed, and we wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors. This class of retiring teachers was an intrical part of the fabric of Manzano High School. Manzano will not be the same without them, but we hope they enjoy their new found free time. Ms. Epstein

#7 A Look At Our ISP Students A feature in our October issue gave a look at Manzano’s ISP students, who many other students don’t understand. The class focuses on skills that will be necessary for their lives after high school, including social and communication skills. Each student also learns about the condition he or she has and educates his or her classmates about what they’ve learned. The ISP students stay active and have fun with the Special Olympics program, where they compete at different schools as well as out of town.

#6 Mikey Long Recieves Scholarship Senior Mikey Long received the Pursuing Victory With Honor Scholarship, worth 1,000 dollars. Long was one of 12 players in the state to receive this honor. Long played a big part in leading the football team into the second round of the playoffs this season. Long looks forward to college and is honored by this award.

#5 Principal Therese Carroll After many years serving as principal, Tim Whalen left at the end of last year. After summer break, we returned to find out that, after having served five years as an assistant principal, Therese Caroll has returned to Manzano to take over the position of principal. At the end of the year, we are happy to have had her. Her second full year in charge should be even better.

#4 Gym Flooding Before the start of school, Manzano was hit by heavy rain. The gym flooded, almost putting a halt on the homecoming coronation. Coronation is usually held in the gym but repairs weren’t finished until the end of October. So instead, coronation was moved to Wilson Stadium, saving Manzano’s annual ceremony.

#3 Boys Basketball This season the Boys Basketball team was ranked #1 in the state for most of the year. This year’s team won the first ever Metro tournament and the district championship. The Monarchs went 9-0 in district and finished with a 26-3 record. Although 7 seniors are leaving, the Monarchs have a very talented squad for next year.

#2 Barack Obama is the 44th President Historic in several ways, Barack Obama’s election to the presidency of the United States is inarguably a huge story. Inheriting some of the most daunting challenges our nation has yet faced, the decisions Obama makes will be the most heavily scrutinized in recent memory. Obama has begun the process of hammering out legislation on healthcare, education, overseas conflict and, most controversially…

#1 The Economic Crisis Undoubtedly the hardest-hitting and farthest-reaching story of the year, the economic meltdown will be on the minds and mouths of world citizens for years to come. Congress’ current $700 billion-plus bailout plan is spurring intensely heated debate. The ailing economy is also the story which most directly affects us, with jobs disappearing and financial institutions evolving to adapt as quickly as possible. Whatever happens, America going forward will have undergone a complete overhaul.

Ian Kerstetter

This year a well-known and prolific student, Ian Kerstetter was nominated for the Academic Award. With his undying passion for art and a proficient 4.0+ GPA, he has made his mark at Manzano High. He has made a major impact on Manzano’s art program. Ian has been awarded for his work not only with the thrill of doing something he loves, but also with recognition; he placed 3rd and 5th in the All-Metro Art Show. Ian has found his inspiration through his own success and the continuous support of his friends and family. He was greatly influenced by Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson, who gave him a positive view on the world, proving that anything was possible and in his reach.

Meredith Sharp

Meredith Sharp may be new to Manzano this year, but she has already proven her success and dedication to her schoolwork. She has an impressive 4.2 GPA, and has accomplished a lot in her favorite activities, choir and karate. She is a three-year All-State Choir singer, and has received support and inspiration by her choir director Henry Leck. “ He inspired me just from the way he acted and conducted himself. Everything he said made us feel so purposeful with what we sang; he helped us to find a passion for what we did. It made my heart fill with happiness, and now I try to find that same passion whenever I sing.” She says she believes in staying committed to individual interests, and finding a passion for anything you do. Meredith has been a very productive and inspirational student, and has made a huge difference at Manzano High School. We look forward to seeing what she does her senior year.

Kyle Lantz Kyle Lantz is an athlete to watch for next year. He was not only named to the second team AllDistrict, but was also named to the first team All-Academic. These are great prizes to show for all his hard work and dedication. He looks up to his dad as his inspiration, who has continuously pushed and supported him to encourage his success. “My dad is my inspiration and the reason I got into basketball. I fell in love with the game at a young age, partly because my dad played.” His father has very solid supportive words that have kept him motivated such as: “I’ll bet there’s a kid working on his game right now while your sitting there playing video games.” Kyle has a 4.37 GPA and a desire to achieve the absolute best.

Veronica Vazquez

Veronica Vazquez has been an outstanding athlete during her first few years of high school. With her All-District awards in cross country, and Track and Field, she is definetly an athlete to watch next year. To top it all off, she was voted Most Valuable Distance Runner, which was a great show of her excellence. She is inspired by her coaches and fellow runners, from their continuous support and encouragement. “My most inspiration comes from the fact that my coaches and fellow runners believe in me. I love running because it’s as much a mental game as a physical game and I feel so great after I’ve conquered a race.” To complement her inspiring running career in high school, she also has a 4.0 GPA. She has been a great contribution to Manzano’s athletic department.

From 1960 to 2009 Manzano High School has been changing each year. Whether it’s adding more classrooms, restoring the gymnasium, or moving the cafeteria, Manzano is always evolving. This year Manzano has added more classrooms to the K building and a new gymnasium. Tony Carrillo says that most of the new classrooms in the K building will be used for Modern Classical Languages, NJROTC and Living Skills classes for some of the students with special needs. Also, there will be a special culinary arts room where they will install a commercial kitchen, and the gym in K building will be used for the Special Ed students. “There are 9 additional classrooms and a computer lab” says Carrillo as he explained how the new classrooms would be used. Social studies, math, science and english will stay put, but the rest of the classes are moving all over the school. There’s also an addition to the staff due to the need for more teachers at the school. The construction is expected to end in a few weeks, as the teachers need to move in to their new classrooms before we leave in May. For baseball, there’s going to be a facility room added so the team can store their equipment. There will be no major construction occurring when we come back in August. During summer there will be some roofing construction on the office building and the library. The office staff will be moving around as well, with most staff moving to the counseling office. Next year we’ll have two 9th grade counselors, one 10th grade, one 11th grade and two for the 12th graders. No longer will students’ counselors be based on alphabetical order. Those counselors will take care of all the students from A to Z in their grade level. So while the changes may be subtle, Manzano will be different next year. Our school is constantly expanding and improving and we look forward to seeing some of these changes. Manzano has come a long way in its 50 years. Just imagine what our school will look like 50 years from today.

Keep your hand at your sides and Out of the razor blades. Hold onto what means the most; They can save your life. Dance with this intangible feeling You’re so forever caught up in. Of The Gifted Series By Amanda Sims Preface: My world was perfect. Everything and everyone had a specific purpose in my life. My family was happy. My brothers and parents loved me and I returned their love with equal enthusiasm. But then that day came, the day that altered our lives forever, the day that my mother died. I don’t blame her, I just wish things could go back to the way they were. 1. Memories An arena, lit by artificial light and enclosed by a sturdy roof surrounding an audience in which the metal stands could hardly hold them. A gorgeous, ambidextrous mare cantered around the ring, flying over the adrenaline pounding five feet tall jumps. The female rider was gorgeous and bold. Not one lock of her silky black hair emerged from under her helmet. Her posture, grace, and confidence assured the audience of her success. The crowd shouted in disappointment as the horse knocked the top rail down. The next jump, and the last, had to wrap up the course like a shiny present. As the last jump approached, the rider sat taller in her saddle. A look crept onto the mare’s face and then overpowered her features. The expression was that of a cheetah spotting her prey; the horse had found determination and her ultimate goal. But, the look evaporated a few feet from the towering fence. The horse froze, as if someone had pressed the pause button on the immediate world. The rider, who lost her balance, was torn form the horse’s back to crash into a wooden jump. A moment later, the poles and heavy timber collapsed to crush the rider. That woman… was my mother. Her name was Melanie. She died a few hours later… just before sunrise. At the time, I was

Recipe Poem- “How To Spit Game” Yo, so you want to spit some game First you need some ingredients Mix up a bowl of confidence and spice Stir in “da flava” make it all look nice Whip up your wit and romantic sentiments Add a pinch of gall in order to obtain The girl of your dreams who keeps you up at night Dress to impress, spray the cologne, dab on the might Swagger in your step, a playboy’s grace Dominate the room, be alpha male of the place Show up to the party fashionably late Pretend to not care then spot your mate Eyes lock the target destination in sight Play your cards right and tonight’s the night Sprinkle on the groove and hit the dance floor Smooth as silk approach the one you adore Game face on drop the opening line “Baby how you do, yo you looking real fine! It’s written in the stars that you’re meant to be mine, So dance with me tonight and we’ll drink some wine!” Now you’re such a fool if for one second you Thought that you could play it all like this Charm by the numbers is a recipe for disaster To obey a glamorized view of pseudo womanizer master Will get you long gone or burnt pretty quick You may get lucky, but it’s not an everlasting schtick To seek the everlasting true meaningful relationship Just be yourself disregard a vain attempt Seek your own path the only way you will get The one you love with all the depths of your heart Who truly loves you back, your missing ingredient Chop off your fear and insecurity Dice up your nerves then throw your essence in it Simmer to the voice of sensibility Take the risk to bare it all Swallow your pride; not that’s not a bad start. In this game of love, dessert don’t last, If you seek something sweeter, don’t eat too fast.

her five-year-old daughter. The memories I have of her are brief and fuzzy. Now I live with my delusional father and three athletic, older brothers. My mother had been attempting to even out the playing field for women. In 1890 King Edward II passed a law before he died and entrusted his son, King Edward III, with his throne, that outlawed women participating in risky and dangerous activities. The decree was passed because of a gene defect called the Plagene. Plagene was simple, like a virus it attacked the female body, targeting and hardening the reproductive tissue and preventing proper dilation when it came time to deliver. Women affected by the disease could no longer give birth naturally. And, despite the Renaissance in the 1880’s that left my world with amazingly advanced technology (like the Internet, cell phones, and central plumbing) the medical community was still behind by about half a century. Doctor’s thought this was the only symptom, but less than a year later they discovered otherwise. Females with this disorder often bleed out after the C-section because the disease would turn on the red blood cells, killing them and preventing the incision from healing. The babies usually survived, but unfortunately, the mothers didn’t. Plagene is genetic and most women have it, so my world needs all the women it can get. The only problem with this law is that not all women have the gene mutation, yet they still aren’t allowed to participate risky sports of their choosing. Melanie and I don’t carry this gene. She was standing up to her well-earned rights. But, due to the stress of this seemingly unreachable goal, she obtained two ulcers and one ripped open during her last show. My father, James —who pretty much went insane after mom died— sold Melanie’s horse, Summer, to the glue factory. A memory flashed into the girl’s mind. Summer, who after a week without food, looked like a bag of bones, was being loaded into a skinny trailer that had an aura of death surrounding it. The little girl had fought against her father fruitlessly. When she realized she couldn’t win, the girl yelled, “I hate you!” Sadly, the words she had spoken were mostly true. The teenage girl shuddered at the horror filled memory. He captured my pictures and the sapphire crystal necklace mom used to wear. Now, I am sticking to the promise I made to my mother on her deathbed, which is to complete my mother’s dream, sowing it together piece by piece. I’ll do whatever it takes to reach this goal. Another vision was drawn to her in-depth thoughts. The image was from the night her mother had died. The family had spent almost fifteen hours in the hospital and she had made an everlasting pledge a few seconds before her mother passed into another world. “I love you Mommy,” whispered the little girl from across the room. “I promise to take care of Summer and finish what you started.” At her words James, who had been sleeping, snapped his head up and his eyes grew wide.

The little girl hadn’t neglected to notice that outside the colors of the sky began to gleam brighter and brighter. The sunrise made the colors almost a orange. The little girl looked at the painting of colors in the sky and took it as a sign of hope. She heard a fast beeping noise that was engraving itself into her head. Then, the annoying, no longer musical note, turned into one black long line of a beep. It never let up on her ears. The memory was painful, but it reminded the girl of her true goal she had placed in front of herself eight years ago. Unfortunately, she hadn’t been able to save Summer, but her resolve amplified after that failure. Fiery determination settled in her teenage soul, renewed and twice as strong as the first time she had experienced that feeling so many years ago. My name? I’m Samantha Green: a short, twelve year old and a skilled horse rider, who created her own destiny by trying to rewrite the modern laws of my stubborn, patriarchal world.
