No Jesus. No Peace.

Know Jesus. Know Peace. The greatest display of Love is from God.

The Word spoken of here is Jesus Christ. Jesus is God, God the Son. Jesus Christ is Lord of all. God became man born to a virgin via the Holy Spirit, He lived a sinless, pure, perfect, holy life and didn’t sin once, not even in thought!

God shows His great love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us. Sin simply means missing God’s holy standard. We are all born totally depraved, not wanting Him at all, but Jesus Christ died for us -- now that’s loving! God is completely holy, 100% perfect, righteous, fair and loving. God is loving, He has bestowed His love onto people that hate Him and rebel against Him.

The sinless loving One became a pure sacrifice for my sin and yours. He shed his own blood as an atonement for our sin. Now that’s loving! I don’t know about you but I don’t think I’d die for someone that hated me? Jesus did, He died for you.

You could say that the polar opposite to love is hate. One of the 10 commandments in the Bible is “Do not murder”. You may not have murdered someone physically but the Bible also teaches that if you have ever hated someone that’s as good as murder in the eyes of our holy loving perfect God. Hence if you have ever hated someone you have broken 1 of Gods holy laws and that’s just 1 of the 10 stated in the Old Testament, just one!

He loved you so much that He got whipped over 30 times, He got a crown of thorns wacked on His head, He got nailed to a dirty old cross, hung there and bore the full wrath of God that we rightfully deserved, died, then rose again from the dead 3 days later and in Him we have redemption through His blood the forgiveness of sins and eternal life. He loves you that much! And by His sacrificial death, He has freed those who believe from their sins and has granted them eternal life in Heaven. He took the penalty so that we could be free. He provides a way of salvation for us. Jesus Christ made a way for reconciliation with God by His ultimate and sacrificial love. Christ’s death and resurrection makes it possible for people to be united with our loving Heavenly Father.

Everyone has sinned, we all have missed God’s perfect loving holy standard. Therefore if we have broken His perfect law the only adequate sentence is the polar opposite to heaven, hell. However since God is so loving, He has made a way that we can be reconciled to Him. For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. God has lovingly bridged the gap between sinful humans and His own holiness. This is lovingly seen in the person and work of Jesus Christ. I te timatanga te Kupu, I te Atua te Kupu, Ko te Atua ano te Kupu. In the beginning, the Word already existed, the Word was with God and the Word was God.

To receive God’s great love and Holy Spirit we must realise that we have thought said and done wrong things and therefore are sinful, be truly sorry for your sin and ask God for forgiveness. Abandon everything else you trust and turn to and fully trust in Jesus Christ as your personal loving Lord and Saviour.

Pornography Fallout

Most probably the number one cause of “spiritual heart disease” in our day is pornography. It pervades our society like a plague. Its ugly destructive tentacles are throughout many television programmes. Advertisers use it profligately to attract consumers. It adorns the pages of magazines, and it is easily accessible on the internet. But it is as addictive as any hard drug and it will destroy your moral integrity, harden you towards God and ultimately seal your eternal doom in Hell. You need to avoid it at all costs and if you are involved in any way, you need to be delivered from its insidious snare. For further information on the subject or if you need help please contact MPA Headquarters. (All inquiries will be kept in strict confidence).

Pornography -- What’s Wrong with It? by Dr. Ralph F. Wilson

While a portion of the feminist movement supports pornography as a free speech issue, a significant slice opposes pornography as degrading and dangerous!

Along with the “free sex” movement that began in the ‘60s came a loosening of restrictions on pornography. If “looking on a woman to commit adultery with her in your heart” (Matthew 5:28) is Jesus’ definition of the spirit of adultery, then pornography fits the description precisely.

Here are some of the arguments against pornography:

It is defined as “the depiction of erotic behaviour (as in pictures or writing) intended to cause sexual excitement.”

Pornography causes people to view others as mere sex objects.

Where pornography was once available only in sleazy porn shops, today it has become common in our society, abundant in libraries, bookshops, and video stores and now piped into homes via the Internet and television.

Pornography lowers moral values in individuals and society resulting in the acceptability and/or legalization of prostitution, fornication, adultery, and other sexual perversions.

“There are no victims here” argue the pornographers and their allies. However, an increasing body of evidence disagrees.

Pornography creates unrealistic expectations of sex and sexual practices that spouses may be unable or unwilling to fulfil.

4

Pornography isolates sexual fulfilment from a caring relationship with another human being, rendering it essentially selfish.

Breaking Free From Lust:

Pornography is linked to crimes of rape, incest, and sexual abuse of children.

If you have been captured by a habit of lust or pornography, how do you break free? It is difficult. If you have practiced a habit over a period of years, you will not break it in a moment. It will take determination and a healthy dose of God’s grace to cleanse you when you fail. But it is possible to break free from destructive lust.

The pornographic industry is increasingly controlled by organized crime.

Here Are Some Steps That Can Help:

Pornography exploits young women’s naiveté and need for money, prostituting images of their bodies to fulfil men’s evil lusts.

Pornography can become psychologically addictive, leading many men to crave more and more bizarre sexual fantasies to stimulate them.

1) Call an attraction to pornography what it is, adultery of the heart, a corrupt spiritual addiction. 2) Understand something of the nature of your addiction. For example, what are the “triggers” that result in viewing of pornography? 3) Come to a firm conviction that sexual lust is wrong. Stop making excuses for your sin. 4) Stop feeding your lust. Get rid of anything in your home that triggers your lust. 5) Throw out any pornographic materials you possess. 6) Until you get victory over this it may involve cutting off the internet or sky TV capability that pipes pornography into your home. 7) Purchase a service that filters out pornography from your computers, not just for your children’s sake, but for your sake as well. 5) Share with someone close to you your struggle with this sin and become accountable to this person. 6) Ask for this person’s prayer support and confess your sins to him (James 5:16). 7) Seek counsel for your problem from a pastor or Christian counsellor. 8) Use the weapons of prayer and Scripture reading. 9) Accept God’s grace and complete forgiveness toward you as his child, even if you fall and sin again. The woman taken in adultery didn’t hear condemnation from Jesus, but love and encouragement:

As our society embraces pornography as a harmless outlet, it can’t help but increase problems of individuals and society as a whole. Who are the “victims” whom Satan deceives and pollutes through pornography?

- The women who pose. - The men who view and become addicted despite their shame. - The wives who suffer isolation, shame, and assault. - The children who are abused. - The women who are raped. - The society that bears the cumulative pain of divorce, crime, and disorder.

“There are no victims here?” Wrong! We all are victims.

“Neither do I condemn you. Go, and sin no more” (John 8:11).

The Fallout Continues... Adapted from an article by Trish Mackie

AUGUST 6th, 1945, began as a fairly ordinary day as an American plane flew high over a Japanese city. Suddenly, without warning, a monstrous fireball erupted, obliterating buildings and people in a matter of seconds and raining deadly dust and ash over the city of Hiroshima.

Shattered families, fatherless children, abortion, rape, incest, pornography, venereal disease, suicide. The explosion of sexual freedom without responsibility has created fallout that has eroded the foundations of our society just as surely as a nuclear bomb brought Hiroshima to ruin.

Over 90,000 people died or went missing that day.

Sixty-five years ago there was a nominal spirit of belief and trust in God. The war had ended and people set out to make for themselves and their families a better life.

Thousands more died later from the fallout of radiation. It was the dawning of a fairly ordinary decade across the western world. The 1960’s had arrived and the various catch phrases began to echo across our land, “Make love not war”, “Peace, brother, peace”. The young people cried, “All you need is love”. The old standards were out and it was in with the new.

Exhilarated with the prospect of freedom there was a great drive in the hearts of millions to get more education, scientific knowledge, financial security and anything else the good life could offer. The need for spiritual strength and truth was forgotten.

Of course the dropping of moral standards was not new, just as bombs were not new to Japan. The sexual revolution propelled by the media exploded over our society like a bomb. Five decades later the radiation level is still high and continues its widespread devastation.

Families laid aside their Bibles and stopped their church going in the quest for materialism.

6

Today there is more money, technology and possessions in society than any generation before us. But money provides us with everything but happiness and a passport to...

“Today’s generation basically has no knowledge of the one true God.”

anywhere but Heaven! The quest for peace and freedom is renewed with every generation, yet it is the same old search that man has been pursuing down through the ages. More drugs, more sex, more perverted music, more, more, more of something, more of anything. Still the utopia we long for continues to elude us, causing further failure and deeper despondency. Or yet another devastated family finds their loved one on the end of a rope because the only way out of their futility was to wrap it around their neck!

They have been allowed to grow up ignorant of spiritual reality and experience, ignorant of the knowledge of peace with their Creator and consequentially, of true freedom.

After dedicating his life to science and aviation, Charles Lindberg came to this conclusion: He said, “I saw the aircraft I love destroying the civilisation I expected it to save. Now I understand that spiritual truth is more essential to a nation than the mortar in its city walls. For when the actions of a people are undergirded by spiritual truth, there is safety. But when spiritual truths are rejected it is only a matter of time before civilisation will collapse”.

Christ is the only answer.

“There is no God” is the underlying philosophy of our society and we are constantly reminded of it through the media. Life has become void of any real meaning or purpose. The age-old faith that brought satisfaction and met the need of our forefathers is simply stated:

By taking upon Himself the burden and penalty of our sin, He declared, “I have come that you might have life, and have it to the full”. Christ is the only one who can truly satisfy the businessman who treks across town to yet another cocktail party. He is the only answer to the single mother who sits and swoons over another episode of “Days of Our Lives”, longing for a love that doesn’t betray, or the person who has given up looking for a job and sits on the back steps, thinking, “There has to be more to life than this”.

“Jesus Christ is the only one who has the answer for each one of us”

The Twisted Gospel By Graham Batson finally made that decision Sam. You had a bit of a struggle there for a while, but you came through in the end.” “I’m still having a bit of a struggle, Rewi. There seems to be so much to learn and I want to get things right. I appreciate the help and guidance you give me to avoid wrong ideas and teaching. Man! There seems to be such a lot of it out there these days! There’s quite a lot of helpful stuff on Christian Tv that I get plugged into. But tell me, what’s the story with this ‘Word of Faith’ stuff I was hearing about the other night?” “Oh, you mean ‘the Prosperity Gospel’. That’s another label for it. Well, there are varying degrees of it, but to cut to the chase, the idea is that if we have a goal or something we really want, if we can have enough ‘faith’ and can visualise having actually obtained or received it, God will give it to us.” “Ok. So where’s the problem?” “The problem is, Sam, that it turns the true

The day had been a hot one and Sam and Rewi were resting on the steps of the beach front dairy with their bottles of Coke. They had just walked a couple of Ks up the beach from their fishing spot and were well satisfied with their day, but they were feeling somewhat exhausted from the summer heat. Their chilly bin was weighed down with several medium sized snapper and a couple of kahawai. “What a day!” Exclaimed Sam. “I just about lost that last one. He really put up a decent fight!” “Yeah man! You were working hard there for a while. What about next Saturday? Are you free? We could do it again?” “No, unfortunately, I’m working that day,” replied Sam. “Should be right for the following weekend though”. They were silent for a while and then Sam spoke up: “That was a real good decision I made a few months back, you know”. “What was that Sam?” “When I decided to accept Christ into my life and become a Christian.” “Yep. I’m really glad you

8

can do.” “Very true, Sam. Millions of true Christians over the years have given their lives in service for God in dark and dangerous parts of the world in order to spread the true Gospel of Christ. Many have faced martyrdom, and along comes the Prosperity Gospel and offers health, wealth and whatever else our sinful natures might fancy. It’s a sham!

Biblical Christian faith on its head. It makes God our servant instead of us being His servants. That is not what the Christian life is all about. God saves us so that we can know the joy and purity of having our sins forgiven and our lives cleansed ready to serve Him. Christ becomes the centre of our lives rather than us.” “Yeah, that’s clear enough. I can accept that.” “But with the so-called Prosperity Gospel we are still in the driver’s seat of our lives. It is our wants, our goals that are all important, not God’s. And, believe me, the devil can soon see that we get some of these wants just to keep us off track and from really living for the Lord.” “Wow, it’s subtle, isn’t it!”

God is not a glorified Father Christmas perched on a cloud somewhere waiting to fulfil our wishes! We are saved to serve Him!” “You really are quite passionate about this, aren’t you, Rewi!” “Yes, Sam, I am. And I’ll give you one good reason: A lot of people following this ‘gospel’ are being lulled into a false sense of security. Jesus said that ‘Not everyone who says to Me, “Lord, Lord” will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven, but only He who does the will of My Father who is in Heaven’. There it is again – ‘only he who does the will of My Father’. Then He went on to say referring to the final reckoning, ‘Many will say to Me on that day, “Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?” Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from Me, you evildoers!’ What a terrible shock that will be for those who have followed a false gospel! This is why I am passionate about knowing and spreading the truth, Sam”. “That seems a pretty good reason for following the truth, Rewi!” “Right on! And while I’m thinking of it, when you get home have a read of 1 Timothy chapter 6, verses 6 through 10. If this isn’t a wake-up call for these ‘prosperity gospellers’ I don’t know what is!” They were silent again for a while. Then Sam said, “Thanks Rewi. You’re a good mate. I’m glad I got to know you.”

“Sure is. Jesus plainly said, ‘Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well’. ‘All these things’ refers to the necessary things in life so that we can serve God. After all, we need food, clothing and a place to live. God wants us to put His Kingdom and His righteousness before everything else and He promises to take care of the rest. Serving Him and furthering His purposes and not our own is the goal of the true Christian. And here’s another thing, a religious guy went up to Jesus one day. (You can find it in Matthew 8, verses 18 to 20). He said to Jesus, ‘I will follow You wherever You go.’ The reply he received was rather interesting. Jesus didn’t say, ‘Wow! You’re great! Jump on board!’ No. He replied, ‘Foxes have holes and the birds of the air have their nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head”. He left it there. He was implying, ‘Do you still want to come?’ You know, we never hear of that religious guy again. Salvation is free, but being a true disciple means sacrifice”. “Yes, I see,” responded Sam. “But when we think of what the Lord has done for us, it’s the least we

Then God said, “Let the waters swarm with fish and other life. Let the skies be filled with birds of every kind.” So God created great sea creatures and every living thing that scurries and swarms in the water, and every sort of bird - each producing offspring of the same kind. And God saw that it was good. Then God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply. Let the fish fill the seas, and let the birds multiply on the earth.” And evening passed and morning came, marking the fifth day. Then God said, “Let the earth produce every sort of animal, each producing offspring of the same kind - livestock, small animals that scurry along the ground, and wild animals.” And that is what happened. Music

Band member Chris Llewellyn says “People are more important than music, art or apparent success.” Isn’t that refreshing to hear from a band about to embark on tour of America playing 50 venues!

The Rend Collective “The art of Celebration”

Their use of unconventional instruments blended with the more conventional sounds of guitars and mandolins certainly makes for an eclectic sonic mix that oozes joy and vibrancy. And their lyrics clearly identify God as the author of that joy:

Rend Collective give us their own take on worship music, alive with folk-rock and bluegrass rhythms and a selection of weird Irish instruments that somehow compete very well with todays contemporary music production. Their focus on music for the community, demonstrated by recording their album “Campfire” around a real campfire on the beach, pays tribute to their commitment to this.

Testimony to the power of

Christ Jesus

No one expects a 19-year-old employee to hand you a Bible and invite you to church, and no one expects God’s Truth to be revealed in a way so unexpected. Before I met my wife, at 25 I was given my Bible from an employee, who had been praying for me to know God and she wanted me to change my way of life. I started going to church and carried my Bible with me around the world as I

12

Leslie and Liana Kiriona

travelled throughout Europe. My life didn’t change straight away, but it definitely had an impact on decisions I made from that point onwards. Five years later, I was told to return home to Whanganui to look after my children I had left behind, to stop running from my responsibilities. This was ‘my big wake-up call’. This was when I really committed to living for God and shedding my old self. Here I was, looking for love in other countries when all this time the Lord had someone for me back here in Whanganui. Through this God’s Unexpected Truth has been revealed in my life, to face my responsibilities, to stop looking for things that don’t matter, and place God as a beacon for my life going forward. Three years on Liana and I married, and became one under God’s guidance. We have 5 children -- 2 together and by God’s grace Liana

things right, we don’t always make good decisions. I agree that we don’t always represent the Lord perfectly. It is not a Christian café; it’s a cafe run by Christians. It is hard for Christians to be in business, but we are asked to make an impact on the world and not separate ourselves from it. How are we supposed to be beacons for those who don’t know God, if we don’t work and live together? God will always be the success of our lives, not Mint Cafe. When we meet the Lord, He won’t be talking about the success of Mint. He’ll be asking, “Who did you bring with you? With all the opportunities I gave you, who did you give My Word to?” A 19-year-old employee gave me His Word, and as Christians we don’t want to miss opportunities to share His Word with others.

accepted my other 3 children as her own. Not an easy option for a 23-year-old. We pray daily for all our children to come to know the Lord, and realise that this will be a decision they make personally, but we give them every opportunity to know Him. Together, we have owned 5 businesses -- 3 cafes, 1 hair salon and 1 clothing store. We have had our share of success and failures with our clothing store, but through this we have put more trust in God’s grace and protection. Only through God did we get through the closing of that business. The lesson we learnt, was that everything of this world can be taken, but the Lord is forever. We learnt not to hold too tightly to worldly things, and understand that nothing we own in this world can be taken to Heaven. Once we put that in perspective, God’s Unexpected Truth shines through clearly. We pray regularly over our businesses, we pray for all our employees, and we always let new employees know we are Christians. But -- and this is a big – but … we aren’t perfect, we don’t always get

Marriage Mutual submission That’s important, it’s the foundation in which everything else regarding the family is to be laid upon in regards to what Paul said in Ephesians 5: 21-33. Wives have frequently borne the brunt of out of context, misinterpreted attempts to explain Ephesians 5, as if this passage were all about the wife’s bowing down like a scared little puppy dog and the husband’s total, unlawful dominance in the married couples life. I have heard of account after account of overzealous, controlling husbands lording verse 22 over their wives head, “bow down or else”. In these cases this verse may as well be carved into a wooden spoon and left over the kitchen taps. This kind of attitude is a harmful, defilement of the whole passage. Paul’s stress was first and foremost on the mutuality of submission. The command to submit is not just for the wives but for all husbands as well. Very simply verses 22–24 explain how wives are to submit to their own husbands with the same kind of respect and devotion that they owe to the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. Paul went on to say in verses 25–29 that the husband owes the wife the same kind of love and devotion Christ showed for the church: “just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her” (v. 25). Think about it, is there no greater act of submission than to die for someone? That is exactly what Jesus did for the church, who’s the Church? Christians! Since husbands are commanded to love their wives the way Christ loved the church, this then requires the ultimate self-sacrifice of submission on the wife’s

14

Matters behalf. It’s not saying that the husband is supposed to let go of his God-ordained role of leadership and authority in the home, what it does mean though is the way he must exercise his leadership is not by total power, control, overbearing and scaring his wife and family, but by serving his beautiful family in love and sacrificing himself for them with Christ-like humility. The husband is to support his wife by helping her endure her burdens and shouldering all her cares and worries, even if it means sacrificing his own wants, needs, dreams and desires to meet the needs of his wife. It’s a different kind of submission, not submission to her authority per se, but a loving willingness to sacrifice for her, serve her, and seek her good. Submit in Greek is hypotassō: meaning to arrange under, to subordinate. This word was a Greek military term meaning “to arrange [troop divisions] in a military fashion under the command of a leader” In nonmilitary use, it was “a voluntary attitude of giving in, cooperating, assuming responsibility, and carrying a burden. Interesting that “submit” doesn’t appear in the original manuscript in Ephesians 5:22 but is implied from verse 21.

Church History

Recommended Resource Church History - Bruce Shelley

THE AGE OF JESUS AND THE APOSTLES: 6 BC – AD 70

THE AGE OF CATHOLIC CHRISTIANITY: 70 – 312

The roots of Christianity go back into Jewish history before the birth of Christ. It was Jesus who brought a renewal into history early in the first century. After the crucifixion of the Lord Jesus Christ under the roman official Pontius Pilate, Jesus’ teachings spread throughout the Mediterranean area. An apostle called Paul was very influential in this time. He proclaimed God’s gift of salvation to all and led in Christianity’s emergence from Palestinian Judaism to a universal movement.

Around this period of time Christianity spread through the Roman Empire and most likely east to India. This period suggests Christianity was now universal, in spite of pagan ridicule and Roman persecution and opposition to Jesus’ teachings. To face these challenges of their times Christians turned more and more to their Church leaders for spiritual leadership. Catholic Christianity, therefore, was marked by a universal vision, by orthodox beliefs, and by Episcopal Church government. 16
