Shades of the season

A Maple Ridge soldier is working in communications in Afghanistan as Canada winds down its military mission there. Cpl. Ashley Turner, 27, who is currently doing her doctorate in psychology at the University of Toronto, is working as a signaler in Afghanistan. The reservist with the 39 Signals Regiment in Vancouver is a member of the Quick Reaction Force deployed as part of the 900-member contingent of Canadian troops on Operation Attention, Canada’s part in the NATO Training Mission – Afghanistan. This is her second time in Afghanistan, having taken part in the Operation Athena in 2011. The goal of the current operation is to deliver training and professional development support to the national security forces of Afghanistan. Things have changed in Afghanistan since Turner was there last time. “Two years ago I didn’t see a single Afghan woman at work or on the street, but now, I am starting to see more and more women out in public, at work, or in a uniform, this is different from my last tour,” Turner said.

For a Pitt Meadows couple, there’s no better way to celebrate their union than to go for a walk/run in support of a worthy cause. by Troy Landreville

tlandreville@mrtimes.com

A common colloquialism is for a wedding party and their guests to put on their dancing shoes for a reception. But running shoes? That’s what will be happening this Saturday, Oct. 19, after 32year-old lovebirds John Graham and Devon Benoit tie the knot near their home in Pitt Meadows. And you’re invited. Not to the ceremony itself, mind you – that’s reserved for the roughly 150 guests who received formal invitations. After the ceremony, however, the couple and their guests will make their way over to the path in the Osprey Village area for a community walk/run in support of Athletes In Kind (AIK), a locally run, non-profit charity organization that supports families that are struggling financially because of childhood cancer. Since 2005, AIK has donated more than $120,000 to the BC Childhood Cancer Parents Association. The public is welcome to walk or jog along the path that runs parallel to the Fraser River, starting at roughly 3:15 p.m. near the Stomping Grounds Coffee House, which is catering the event. Donations to AIK are being accepted. “Neither of us has had a personal experience with childhood cancers in our families, but we were welcomed with such open arms in the AIK community, and it’s such a positive cause,” Devon said, adding that she and John aim to keep the wedding “very community inspired.”

Kelsey Simpson photo

Pitt Meadows couple John Graham and Devon Benoit (pictured with their two golden retrievers) plan to marry in their hometown this Saturday. Following the ceremony, the couple is welcoming the public to take part in a charity run/walk along in their hometown. They are supporting a local charity (AIK), using a local caterer (Stomping grounds), with local music (Tim Renaud), a local photographer (Kelsey Simpson) and “many other little aspects of the day,” she said. “John is with the Pitt Meadows Fire and Rescue, so many of those members will be joining us for the day, too,” Devon noted. The soon-to-be wed couple

has a common love for exercise and fitness. They met in January 2011 as participants in Sole Experience Friday night run clinics, in which John was a leader. Sole Experience owner Eric Muller, who is attending the wedding with his family, has been coaching youth-run programs for seven years through AIK, which hosts running events to raise money for its cause.

Through the Sole Experience clinic, the two lovebirds hit it off instantly. “There was an instant friendship, most definitely,” Devon related. “I’m not as ‘runner-ish’ as John but I was a competitive swimmer so we had similar childhoods with being really active in competitive sports.” The two are now pace group leaders with Sole Experience. Devon said AIK is like “a family to us.” “We met through AIK and wanted that represented,” Devon said. “We are inviting the community and our run family.” In full wedding attire, John and Devon plan on slipping on their running shoes and taking part in the unique fundraiser. John will be wearing a suit and tie and his new wife will be adorned in her mom’s wedding dress. “We’re celebrating AIK in wedding style,” Devon said, adding that, “John and I are going to veer off and then cheer everyone on at the finish line.” Eric Muller’s wife Lorie, the founder and president of AIK, added, “Our run group has had shirts made just for the occasion to really give this a special event feel.” She added that the hubby and bride are “a very cool couple that has combined sport, giving, and romance.” Muller said running and helping the community are what John and Devon are all about. “We’re a really big family of runners and outdoor enthusiasts,” she said. “It’s pretty cool.” The finish line will be the wedding party’s receiving line, Lorie noted. To celebrate John and Devon’s pending marriage, Sole Experience is offering two-forone memberships to its Sole Mates clinics, up to Oct. 20. Visit www.soleexperience.ca or email Eric Muller through the website. Visit the AIK website at www.athletesinkind.com.

Jet-skier swims to safety on Alouette Lake A Port Moody man suffered mild hypothermia following a water rescue on Thanksgiving Day. by Roxanne Hooper rhooper@mrtimes.com

A Port Moody man has much to be thankful for following a rescue in Golden Ears Provincial Park Monday. Beautiful fall weather on the Thanksgiving Day holiday motivated the

man to test drive a jet-ski on Alouette Lake Monday afternoon, said Rick Laing, manager of the Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue. But the trip didn’t work out as planned, and the man was suffering the onset of mild hypothermia and sore feet when rescuers located him Monday night. “He was very lucky as this could have had a very tragic outcome,” Laing said, elaborating on the incident. The man was contem-

plating the purchase of the jet-ski, and told his girlfriend he was heading to the Maple Ridge lake. He insisted he would be back home by 4 p.m., and if he wasn’t back by then, she was to assume something had gone wrong and to call police. “Which is what happened,” Laing said. The search team was deployed at 5:45 p.m., and headed up to the lake with seven members and two boats. It turns out the jet-ski had apparently broken

Haney resident John McKenzie was by MP Randy Kamp’s office on Tuesday, protesting that Parliament had been prorogued. agenda. “I think you can expect what we’ll be focused on the next two years will be in line with our focus of lower taxes and a strong economy,” Kamp said. He pointed out the last session was 834, longer than most sessions. Kamp’s constituency assistant Mike Murray said McKenzie’s protest was the first complaint the MP’s office had received about the fact that Parliament was prorogued.

A month later than originally planned, the federal Parliament resumed sitting on Wednesday. The throne speech was delivered late in the afternoon, and the regular session with question period was set to start up again today (Thursday). On Tuesday, Haney resident John McKenzie was in front of MP Randy Kamp’s office on Lougheed Highway with a sign that read “Harper restore Canada’s democracy.” He was protesting the fact that Parliament had been prorogued for a month, saying proroguing is wrong. “It stifles the debate of elected MPs who were voted in by their constituents across Canada to represent their interests,” McKenzie said in an open letter to Prime Minister Stephen Harper. “Is your government trying to hide from Canadians and the transparency that you promised them?” But MP Randy Kamp said it’s “necessary” to prorogue parliament at the beginning of a session when the government is putting forward a throne speech that will show what the government intends to pursue throughout the rest of its mandate. Just before the throne speech on Wednesday, Kamp told The TIMES he’s heard ministers speaking about reducing roaming charges, greater choice for television service, and better prices for broadband services – a “consumer first”

Just the right blend Chef Karen Carruthers added a dash of pepper – plus some fresh chopped herbs (inset) – to a pot of her roasted tomato soup at a recent Haney Farmers Market. It was one of the last of the season at Memorial Peace Park, where Carruthers, who has been cooking for 10 years, was on-hand in the bandstand demonstrating recipes using seasonal ingredients such as tomatoes and apples. Though those two items may not seem like an intuitive pairing, Carruthers said oftentimes produce in season at the same complement each other nicely.

Working for greater harm Again, the federal Conservative government has charged blindly into ideological battle with a decision to deny heroin to Vancouver addicts involved in a clinical research project. The government’s decision came shortly after Health Canada approved the program, which deals with addicts in life threatening situations for whom previous therapies have failed. In this case, the strategy clearly fell under the heading of harm reduction, which generally acknowledges addiction as a health issue rather than a criminal one and seeks to reduce the harm created by it and by recognizing that eliminating the problem is often not possible. Stephen Harper’s Conservatives are not fans of harm reduction. They have fought health authorities repeatedly on the issue, most notably challenging the existence of Vancouver’s supervised injection site, despite evidence that it has reduced harm to some of our most vulnerable citizens. Medical science has consistently backed up harm reduction as a sound philosophy. But the Tories have never been particularly interested in scientific evidence, much preferring ideological crusades. It’s a pattern that’s been repeated by the Tories in all areas where science has yielded a result that likely won’t appeal to its base of political supporters. “The answer of course is not to treat heroin addiction with heroin,” said Health Minister Rona Ambrose at a press conference in Toronto. “Our goal must be to take heroin out of the hands of addicts. We must focus on treatment and... on recovery,” There is, of course, no logic to this particular decision. The fact that the study participants are all long-term chronic addicts who have failed to respond to other treatment would indicate they will be taking heroin regardless. The only difference will be whether that occurs in a safe, controlled setting or on the streets. – Glacier Media

I recollect some friends were reluctant to buy property in this area. Several of us felt unsafe to walk after dark along 224th and the tunnel at River Road. In

No respect in city hall renovations

Dear Editor, Once again we see how little respect the taxpayers of Pitt Meadows are afforded by Mayor Deb Walters and her council crew. Renovations at city hall are nearing completion, and it’s only costing residents $330,000.

What you’re telling us on Facebook

TIMES reporter Troy Landreville sat down with humourist and author Gord Kirkland who was planning his own funeral a month ago, and now – thanks to a liver transplant – is back home and turning the page on a new chapter in his life. Readers responded: “Great article! Gordon, I can’t wait to see what you write about your experience. Both of you look great. I will keep sending positive thoughts your way.” – Sue P. “Happy you have this chapter behind you and wish you all the best. Met you at the home show in Maple Ridge a few years back and will never forget your wonderful sense of humour.” – Faye Luxemburg-Hyam “Wow Gord! Bravo zulu!!” – Gary Wayne Grigg

Mayor Walters and company get plush new digs, and taxpayers can look forward to another tax increase in the new year. Can anyone remember a single case where the Mayor and council put in some effort and actually cut costs? It appears they will continue to spend extravagantly, regardless of anything we resident taxpayers have to say about it. Archie Blankers, Pitt Meadows

Dear Editor, We are students from Pitt Meadows Secondary School. We had an assembly on Sept. 11, and there was no mention of the terrible act that happened on this tragic day. Something should have been mentioned. Such a tragic event should have been mentioned. It was in the U.S.A., but a lot of Canadians lost their lives, too. Students at PMSS

As if he had just stepped out of the 1890s, historian John Mitchell recounted the story of Sandon, a once-booming B.C. mining town now abandoned. Saturday was Cranberry Day at Hopcott Farms in Pitt Meadows. Scores of people turned out for the event to celebrate the local harvest of one of B.C.’s major agricultural crops. From cranberry pancakes and necklaces to a miniature bog where kids could practice their harvesting techniques, the event offered ways for attendees to interact with the farm that included a petting zoo, a pig race, and a tractor tour of its 70 acres of cranberry bogs. The B.C. harvest makes up roughly 12 per cent of the total North American crop, and yields about 77 million pounds a year… give or take a few million pounds.

With the promise of “lightning fat action,” attendees to Saturday’s Cranberry Day celebration lined the fence for the Pigtucky Derby pig race. The big winner of this race was Lindsay Loham (centre, green blanket).

Pitt Meadows resident Rachel Chandler recently returned from a stroll along the Great Wall of China, where she had her picture taken holding a copy of her hometown newspaper, The TIMES. This Osprey Village woman celebrated her 35th birthday in June with a trip to Bejing and later Hong Kong. She and her family returned to Asia at the end of September, but only for 10 days because the “kids were back to school.”

New Homes Registry Keeps Homebuyers Informed This helpful, easy-to-use, online resource is available from the Homeowner Protection Office (HPO) website at www.hpo.bc.ca. Savvy homebuyers are using it to make more informed purchasing decisions. The New Homes Registry provides free access to find out if a home has a policy of home warranty insurance and is built by a Licensed Residential Builder, or whether it’s built without home warranty insurance. Homebuyers can obtain valuable information such as the name and contact number of the warranty provider, the builder’s warranty number and whether an ownerbuilt home can be legally offered for sale. Every new home built for sale by a Licensed Residential Builder in British Columbia is protected by mandatory third-party home warranty insurance. Better known as 2-5-10 home warranty insurance, this coverage includes: two years on labour and materials, five years on the building envelope (including water penetration), and 10 years on the structure. It’s the strongest system of construction defect insurance in Canada. For free access to the New Homes Registry visit the Homebuyers section of the HPO website.

CANADA’S PREMIERE ONLINE GUIDE TO THE GOOD LIFE

Where am ‘i’? The ‘i’ from The TIMES sign is still “missing” and we’re asking readers to tell us where it is each week in these photos. It will pop up in different locations around the community. Like us on Facebook and tell us where today’s picture was taken and you could win. It’s tucked right in there, like it belongs in this spot. Anyone who answers correctly on Facebook before 9 a.m. Monday is automatically entered to win the weekly and grand prize draws. Last week’s picture was taken of the Ruskin Hall on 96th Avenue and 284th Street in the eastern most region of Maple Ridge. This is the second such hall to be erected in Ruskin. The first community hall of sorts was building in 1916. It was a two-room building intended to double as a replacement schoolhouse as well as a hall. That burned down in 1922, and was replaced with the existing building the next year. The property on which the hall stands was owned by William Gilchrist Laing, a carpenter who donated the land to Ruskin in 1927. On Dec. 4, 1930, the Ruskin Community Hall Association was formed and took possession of the hall. Congratulations to Lynne Bailey for answering correctly. Bailey is also entered in the grand-prize draw.

Four Questions with Elizabeth Hurley Anya Georgijevic

October marks the national Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and no brand has been more crucial to the fight against the disease as Estée Lauder, in its relentless campaigning and fundraising over the last two decades. The exquisitely beautiful Elizabeth Hurley has played a vital part in the Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign since signing as the company spokesperson back in 1995. Intelligent and articulate, Elizabeth Hurley gave us an update on the company’s crusade against the agonizing disease, and even found time to give us a couple of valuable beauty tips. You’ve been an Estée Lauder spokesperson for almost two decades -- a rare thing in this industry. When you signed in 1995, did you think it would become a role of a lifetime? I couldn’t have dreamt it. I think my initial contract was two years. I was thrilled beyond belief when it was picked up again, after two years. It’s really been like having a second family. OCTOBER

2013

Pitt Meadows

You’ve personally been affected by breast cancer; you lost your grandmother to the disease. Was that one of the reasons why you’ve been so passionately involved since the beginning? When Evelyn [Lauder] told me about her campaign, during my first two or three weeks at the company, I suppose my ears did perk up a bit more because of my grandmother. It was so sad the way she hadn’t told anybody about her lump, for the very reasons Evelyn went on to explain why she was doing the campaign. Because she said, “women are dying all over the world and nobody is talking about it.” She was so inspired by the AIDS activists, who, at that time, were very active. You also live and promote a healthy lifestyle, as part of the breast cancer prevention. Can you tell us a little bit more about that? I love living in the countryside, and I’ve always loved feeling healthy. Evelyn Lauder always said to me, “Don’t put on weight. It is not good for you in any way. Not because you won’t look as good, but it could be dangerous for your health.” It’s great for us that doctors and research scientists are now speaking out and saying that they really do believe that we can make a difference by following a healthy lifestyle. They know that we really have to go out of our way to deliberate exercise. I know I don’t step up so much on that one. I’m very active, but I don’t really do exercise regime, and I should. Eating-wise, I’ve eaten pretty well in the last 30 years, so I feel okay in that aspect. What are the goals of this year’s “Let’s Defeat Breast Cancer. We’re Stronger Together” campaign?

Pitt Meadows Community Policing Office

It’s that time of year again! Dark nights and scary costumes make for a fun Halloween, but can pose some safety concerns as well.

Hours of Operation

We need volunteers: We are looking for people willing to help in our office.Training is provided. Volunteers must be 19 years or older and pass a security clearance. Call the Community Policing Office for more information at 604-465-2402.

Remember:

• Choose a light-colored costume to be easily seen at night.Add reflective tape or glow-in-thedark tape to the front and back of the costume and to the trick-or-treat bag. • Only buy a costume that is labeled “flame-retardant.” This means the material won’t burn. If you are making your own costume, use nylon or polyester materials, which are flame-retardant. • Avoid masks - they can make it difficult for kids to see and breathe. Instead, use nontoxic face paint or makeup. • Put a name tag - with your phone number - on your children’s costumes. • Make sure the costume fits well to help prevent trips and falls. • Make sure that any props your kids carry, such as wands or swords, are short and flexible.

We know we’ve succeeded in some way with the awareness, and we’ve helped raise a huge amount of money. The Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign itself has raised $48 million US dollars, most of which they’ve donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, also started by Evelyn Lauder, which has raised nearly half a billion dollars for research. What we’re trying to do this year is encourage people to get together and make a difference themselves. Small scale, big scale: it doesn’t matter. It might be getting a couple of your friends together, and all of you making a pledge to do something about it. It’s all about our “Circle of Strength” and all of that can be seen on BCAcampaign.com, and as well as Facebook, which you’re all on, so no excuses! ments, and lightly coat the seeds with vegetable or olive oil. Toss with salt and pepper – or seasoning salt, if desired – and roast them on a baking sheet in a 450ºF oven, stirring occasionally, until golden brown and crispy, approximately 12 to 15 minutes. Be careful to watch them closely, as they burn quite easily. Serve them in a bowl on their own or with a mixture of other seeds, nuts, and dried fruit. Pumpkin seeds are credited with a number of medicinal properties, and are a great source of numerous minerals. However, due to their high fat content, they should always be consumed in moderation. A serving size of nuts or seeds is equivalent to about the size of a golf ball.

on’t you just love the autumn harvest? The feeling of a crisp breeze in the air, the sound of rustling leaves in a rainbow of colours, and an array of gourds, squash, and pumpkins available at the produce counter! Walking through suburban neighbourhoods on Halloween night and gazing at all the eerily lit creations sitting in windows and on front porches can make one hungry – at least, it does me! As a food, pumpkin is quite neglected in our everyday diets. Although the bright orange fruit is about 90 per cent water, it is loaded with betacarotene (an important antioxidant) and a list of nutritional elements that play an important role in a well-balanced diet. Pumpkins, as members of the squash family, are fruits, just like melons, to which they are closely related. There are two main general types of squash: summer and winter squash. Summer squashes, such as the popular zucchini, cannot be stored for long periods of time. Winter squash, on the other hand, can be stored for long periods of time, under ideal storage conditions. They should be kept away from light and in an area that is moderately cooler than room temperature. Good ventilation is also necessary. Along with pumpkins, other winter squash are acorn, butternut, and autumn squash. Pumpkins are most popularly used as jacko-lanterns on Halloween night, as well as in various recipes of pies, cakes, and soups. Rarely does one see pumpkin served at the table on its own. Pumpkin can be used in any application used for other winter squashes, and undeniably will offer more flavour to the dish. Cubes of oven-roasted pumpkin, in a medley of other colourful vegetables, are a perfect accompaniment to an autumn meal. Alternatively, try using small chunks of pumpkin in your next stir-fry or pasta dish. To make preparation easier, cut the pumpkin into workable pieces to aid in peeling and chopping. Winter squashes should always be peeled before consuming. Their tougher skin is often challenging for the traditional vegetable peeler, and therefore a knife may be more effective. Afterwards, chop the pumpkin into pieces best suited for the recipe planned.

Rowley assists Maple Ridge’s Alex Rowley assisted in a goal that put his soccer team, the SFU Clan, into the lead over Western Washington Vikings on Saturday. With another goal later in the game, SFU beat the visiting team 2-0. “I was very happy with our back four and goalkeeper Brandon Watson,” said head coach Alan Koch. “Collectively, they nullified Western Washington’s attack all night long and were full value for the shutout.” • More online: www.mrtimes.com, click on “Sports”

Parents grapple with kids’ access to social media

I

watch my daughter as she scrolls through her Instagram feed. I know exactly what it’s filled with. Selfies upon selfies of beautiful teenage girls and guys with some of them wearing next to nothing. And the comments... oh my. I wonder how this affects her? I wonder if parents know their teens are posting these images online? I wonder if they care? I listen to my son as he’s playing Battlefield on Xbox live as he’s talking to players on another continent. What happened to the days of two buddies playing sideby-side into the wee hours? I start thinking about my own online routines. Saturday mornings come to mind. That’s when I find some “me” time. Cozy couch, coffee, and

Pinterest. I pin pictures of all the things I want in my home, the fabulous dinners I want to make, the clothes I want in my closet, and the fit body I have yearned for since I was 16. I start thinking more about social media, something I thoroughly enjoy and am a huge advocate for, and its effects on my well-being and my family’s well-being. Is this online world helping or hindering my family? I question if we should abandon social media in our household. But what I know is that social networking is not going away any time soon. Teens may not be as fascinated with Facebook as they used to be, but Twitter, Instagram, and Vine are holding their attention.

It would be silly of me not to allow social media in our home. Consider the technology that is used to communicate in the workplace these days. Webinars. Virtual meetings. FaceTime. It’s my job to prepare my kids for the future. It’s also my job to help my teenagers understand the difference between healthy and harmful communication, the difference between needs and wants, and about communicating with family and friends, both online and offline. I know that social networking spaces are not always kind, supportive, and positive. But I’ve never been a believer that if you stay away from social media that it can’t harm you. I think it’s better to explore it.

Learn for yourself. Find out what you like or don’t like. Even if you don’t love social media, try not to shut it out completely. We know the adage, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me,” is totally inaccurate. Because of this, talk to your kids about how they are using social media and what their thoughts are on different types of posts. Talk to them about the pictures they post, the comments they make, and the impacts they may have. The more you learn about social networking, the better resource you can be for your kids and teens. Lean into other parents too. Talk to them about how they use social media in their home and the rules around use. As long as you’re able, stay

engaged with your kids online. Friend them on Facebook, follow them on Twitter, join them on Instagram. But just because they’ve friended you on Facebook, doesn’t mean they’re not blocking you from their page. I can try to stay on top of everything my kids are doing online, but there also comes a time when I have to put a great deal of trust in the offline conversations I’ve had with them about their online use. I know the messages are getting through. There’s only been a few times I’ve had to intervene.
