Generosity

A TIMES reader has stepped up and generously offered to donate a three-wheel cycle to a special needs student, after one was stolen from Maple Ridge Secondary recently. Unfortunately, the trike that was taken on May 18 was specially equipped and the replacement offered will not likely be appropriate, explained Ridge Meadows RCMP Cpl. Alanna Dunlop. “It is always encouraging to see people responding to the needs in the community, especially in regards to this particular special needs bike that was stolen from Maple Ridge Secondary school,” Dunlop said, applauding Katie van Vloten, who Facebooked The TIMES with the offer of a WalMart three-wheeler with a basket. “I don’t know if this would help at all or would be functional enough for the person who needs it... And I really don’t use it. I would be happy to donate it to this student if their bike is not recovered,” van Vloten wrote. Consequently, Mounties are still asking for the public’s help to find the missing custom-built red Freedom Concepts trike with a large seat, back support, and seatbelt. “This is a very sad event when a common thief, or thieves, have to steal a disabled person’s bicycle,” Dunlop said. Anyone with information is asked to call 604-463-6251.

The new branch manager of the animal shelter in Maple Ridge held her first official animal-themed open house on Saturday. “It’s been fantastic,” said Jennifer York. “In the morning it was terrible weather, but we’ve had reams of people coming through,” she told The TIMES. York had good news to share with all during Saturday’s event, when she announced a new spay and neutering program will be introduced in Maple Ridge in early June. “We are very excited. The District of Maple Ridge has given us a grant for a lowcost spay and neuter program,” she said. “We haven’t completely rolled this out
