Recognizing Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows’ Finest e hope that you enjoy the 2011 version of our popular A-List feature. This, our fourth annual edition, contains a few surprises and some reminders that sometimes our favourite things will always be our favourite things.

W

Around Town

The Golden Ears Mountains, for instance remain a main reason why so many people enjoy living here. The dyke system, lakes, trails and parks haven’t changed much, either so it’s no surprise that they remain perennial favourites.

Favourite Building

The best we can hope for, is to provide a snapshot of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows as it exists at the time of publication. By the time this edition hits your doorstep, something will have changed–you can count on it. The only constant, is change. It’s what keeps our communities vibrant, interesting and appealing to those of us who live here and to those planning to make Maple Ridge or Pitt Meadows their home. So, please enjoy the A-List. Judging by the record number of votes we received, many people have already enjoyed participating. Share it with your family and friends, and don’t forget to get out and explore this beautiful corner of the world we call home. You just might discover your own A-List favourites. Just remember to tell us about them when we publish the 2012 edition. Jim Coulter, Publisher.

The ACT opened its doors in May 2003, following more than 13 years of lobbying by the arts community. The 43,000-square-foot building was the district’s first multi-purpose arts centre, incorporating facilities for both performing and visual arts. It features a 500-seat main stage theatre, 165-seat multi-purpose studio theatre, an art gallery, meeting rooms and a variety of studio space for visual artists. Visit www.theactmapleridge.org for more information on what's happening at The ACT. Second Place: Maple Ridge Library has been a winner three of the for years the A-List has taken place. The library is located on Dewdney Trunk Road, next to the office tower and municipal hall in downtown Maple Ridge. The 3,600-square-foot, two-storey building was constructed as part as the first phase of the downtown redevelopment, and is 233 per cent larger than its former location. Visit www.fvrl.bc.ca/play/programs_mapleridge.php for information on library programs and services. Third Place: The District of Maple Ridge municipal hall finished third again. The brick structure is located in the heart of downtown Maple Ridge, at 11995 Haney Place. It is where the mayor and council conduct their business, as well as where most district departments are located. It is where citizens come to enquire about local government projects and initiatives and where they voice their opinions and provide feedback on how to make their community

What does change, though are all those things that we can control. New buildings spring up, neighbourhoods are developed, people move in and out of the area and businesses are constantly evolving to adapt to these changes.

First Place: The Act is the winner in this category for the fourth straight year, and by its widest margin yet. The ACT, located at the east end of Memorial Peace Park in downtown Maple Ridge, turned eight this past year.

Much more than just another pretty patio!

Recognizing Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows’ Finest a better place. It is also where visitors come to see The "Beast" horse clock, which is located at the front of the municipal hall on Dewdney Trunk Road.

Favourite Eyesore First Place: The Beast horse clock. The horse clock has won this category four straight years, despite undergoing some upgrades in recent years. The clock was given new face plates and was repainted, as well municipal logos were added. Still, it was again the only item to receive votes in this category. The mechanical horse atop the the four-sided clock tower in downtown Maple Ridge had its problems in recent years, when the old Commodore 64 computer that made it rear and chime and keep time, ran out of juice. And before that, it lost a hoof. But all is well now with The Beast– originally promoted as a tourist attraction and hailed as a symbol of environmental preservation when it was unveiled on Aug. 19, 1989.

The cost of building the The Beast (more than $60,000) was a controversy, as was its inspiration (a Mattell toy).

Favourite Community Event First Place: It was a close race, but Pitt Meadows Day edges out Caribbean Festival for favourite community event this year. Pitt Meadows Day, on the first Saturday of every June, celebrated its 73rd anniversary last year, when thousands of people lined Harris Road for the parade. The day starts with a pancake breakfast, followed by the parade, activites in Harris Road Park–including the crowning of Miss Pitt Meadows–music at Youthfest, the firefighters' chicken and salmom barbeque, and wraps up with fireworks. Second Place: Caribbean Festival came second this year. The two-day festival takes over Memorial Peace Park and 224th Street in July with reggae, calyspso, salsa and soca music and authentic Caribbean food.

Patio Season is all year round:

Third Place: The Haney Farmers' Market takes place in Memorial Peace Park in downtown Maple Ridge every Saturday mid-May through midOctober, and features farm-fresh vegetables, baked goods, as well as crafts. Visit www.haneyfarmersmarket.org to see the calendar of events.

Favourite Streetscape First Place: For the fourth straight year, 224th Street in downtown Maple Ridge has earned the distinction of favourite streetscape. Much has taken place during that time–the road has been repaved, new sidewalks added, new crosswalks and lamp posts, benches, bollards, bike racks, garbage bins and trees. A stamped-concrete medallion was placed at the centre of the street. Tile mosaics were created for the sidewalks, and water fountains were constructed in Memorial Peace Park, and the street gardens remain as lush as ever. It's a great place to walk on a sunny midweek day, or ride your bike on a summer evening. Second Place: Harris Road in Pitt Meadows, in spring and summer, is new to the A-List this year, no doubt because of the abundance of opulent hanging baskets. Third Place: Shady Lane once again makes an appearance on the A-List. The section of 124th Avenue, between Laity and 216th streets is lined with tall, thick cedar and fir trees, mixed with hemlock and maples, that block out the sun. The stretch was given "Natural Heritage" status in the 1980s and is part of the Trans Canada Trail network.

Favourite Reason to Live Here

Fall is here!

First Place: Just look around, the mountain views and other natural scenery are once again the obvious choices–from the snow-capped Golden Ears Mountains, to the rocky beach at Alouette Lake, the banks and dikes along the Alouette River and numerous forest trails.

Golden Ears is the name of a group of mountains in the southern part of Golden Ears Provincial Park and is a part of the Garibaldi Ranges. Originally, the group was referred to as The Golden Eyries, which was changed to Golden Ears in reference to the pointy ears-like shape of the twin summits of the mountain, dubbed Mount Blanshard by Lieut. Richard Charles Mayne in 1859, in honour of the first governor of the colony of Vancouver Island. The Golden Ears twin summit is 1,716 m (5,630 ft). Blanshard Peak, the southernmost one, is 1,550 m (5,085 ft). The other peak, known

and brought it home, paraded it around the park's ring road, then carried it above his head to the bandstand. Doesn't get much better than that.

Second Place: Affordable housing–for several thousand dollars less, you can buy the same house here as in Langley or Coquitlam, and it comes with the mountain views and natural scenery.

Second Place: The ACT. Third Place: Maple Ridge Park, with its covered picnic areas, shaded playground, spray park and ball diamonds, all located beside the Alouette River, is a popular place for families.

Third Place: Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows are, no doubt, great places to raise a family, with plentiful parks and great schools and minors sports organizations and community festivals.

Third Place: The Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation is a non-profit registered charity that raises money for new hospital equipment.

Favourite Charitable Organization First Place: St. George's Anglican Street Ministry is a volunteer group from the parish and surrounding community that provides soup, sandwiches and hot meals, coffee and companionship to 50 or people in need every Saturday at 7 p.m. This ministry recently came to an agreement with the Ceed Centre on 223rd Street and can now bring its service indoors.

Favourite Endangered Piece of History In this category there is only one winner, or loser: farmland. The debate over the future of the Albion flats comes to a head in October, when the Agricultural Land Commission is expected to comment on a proposal by the District of Maple Ridge to develop that land as commercial and industrial space. Farmland is also in jeopardy along Lougheed Highway in Pitt Meadows, where it has been suggested another mall and a hotel and convention centre be built.

Second Place: The Ridge Meadows Hospice Society provides compassion, support and care to patients and loved ones in dealing with end of life experience, grief and mourning. The society was founded in 1980 when Edna Trethewey, a former public health nurse, realized the need for help for dying patients and their families in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.

Favourite Place to Host an Event First Place: Memorial Peace Park hosts pretty much every major event in town, from the Remembrance Day ceremonies to the Santa parade, Canada Day celebrations, Bard on the Bandstand and the Haney Farmers Market. Andrew Ladd, when he first won the Stanley Cup

With the Fraser Health Authority as a partner, the society now has 10 palliative care beds in a new facility adjacent to Ridge Meadows Hospital. The McKenney Creek Hospice Residence opened Oct. 17, 2006.

Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation, incorporated in 1985, has raised, over the years, more than $18 million for health care equipment, education and research for Ridge Meadows Hospital, as well as Baillie House residential care, Gardenview Pavilion, McKenney Creek Hospice, home and community health, health promotions and prevention, mental health and addiction services departments in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. The equipment purchased replaces worn or outdated devices or is new equipment necessary to support new technology and medical procedures. The foundation raised $3 million towards the new ambulatory care department, which opened at the hospital in January 2009.

She knew that constant, long-term care of a palliative patient is extremely emotional and physically exhausting for the home caregiver and that help was needed to give caregivers respite. It was also obvious that families needed a support system during the grieving period.

Recognizing Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows’ Finest

Recreation

the Golden Eyries for the golden eagles that live near the summit. Over the years the name was corrupted, and is now known as the Golden Ears.

Favourite Place to Walk Your Dog First Place: Pitt Meadows Dyke Trail

Favourite Park First Place: Maple Ridge Park Maple Ridge Park, located at the corner of Fern Crescent and 232nd Street, has led the A-List for the past three years. The 6.5 hectare park features a covered picnic area, barbecue pit, spray pool, and plenty of green space. Second Place: Golden Ears Provincial Park Golden Ears has been the perennial runnerup in this category, despite the weath of recreational opportunities it offers. At 62,000 hectares, it is one of the largest parks in the province. The extensive system of trails within the park provides an excellent opportunity for hiking and horseback riding. Alouette Lake is a popular spot for swimming, windsurfing, water-skiing, canoeing, boating and fishing. The park also has three large campgrounds. Third Place: Harris Road Park Harris Park features an outdoor swimming pool, fully accessible water playground, a beautifully treed picnic area and a Recreation Hall dating from the 1930's. The park hosts many community festivals and sporting events and has provided generations of recreational fun. A new youth action park is slated for completion this Fall.

The extensive system of dykes in Pitt Meadows was built to protect low-lying lands from flooding, but it also serves as a great place to walk your dog, with dozens of kilometres of wide, flat trails. Don't forget to scoop!

Favourite Place for a Picnic First Place: Golden Ears Provincial Park Golden Ears Provincial Park features three day-use picnic areas next to Alouette Lake, each with washrooms and fresh water.

Second Place: Golden Ears Provincial Park Dogs must be on a leash, no longer than 2 meters long, and under control at all times, including in campgrounds and on trails within 1 km of the Parkway Road. Trails beyond 1 km of the Parkway Road are considered backcountry and dogs may be off a leash but must be under control at all times. Dogs are permitted off-leash in only two swimming areas: at the North Beach dayuse area near the outflow of Gold Creek into Alouette Lake and at the Alouette day-use area between the boat launch and the canoe rental shop. Dogs are strictly prohibited at picnic areas, beaches, marked off swimming areas or park buildings. Backcountry areas are not suitable for dogs or other pets due to wildlife issues and the potential for problems with bears.

Second Place: Maple Ridge Park With its barbecue pits, cooking stove, covered picnic tables, and horse shoe pitch, Maple Ridge Park is a natural place for a family cook out. Third Place: Whonnock Lake Whonnock Lake Park offers a wonderful stand of mature trees, a grassy playground, an excellent small sandy beach, paddle boat rentals, swimming, hiking, and nature study. Park facilities include a barbecue pit, concession stand, picnic tables, a playground, washrooms, paddle boat rentals, drinking water.

Favourite Place to Walk, Run, Jog, or Hike

First Place: Pitt Meadows Dykes

First Place: Golden Ears Mountains

The Pitt Meadows dykes are a perfect place to walk or jog, thanks to the flat terrain. That's why they've won this category three years in a row.

Rick Tippe made the A-List for the first time last year, when he swept the category. Rick Tippe was born into country music, the eldest son of CCMA and BCCMA Hall of Fame member Elmer Tippe. Rick grew up in Maple Ridge, where as a child he played minor hockey and took guitar lessons. Rick's dream was to be a songwriter. At 11 years old, he began to write. He got his first break as a songwriter at 16, when his dad recorded three of his songs and released two of them to Canadian country radio.

Favourite Local band

Signing to Maple Music, their debut release in 2008, produced by Hedley's bassist Tommy Mac, had them touring across Canada with the likes of Faber Drive, Marianas Trench, Hedley, State of Shock and Shiloh. Hailing from Maple Ridge, the Latency was formed six years ago when guitarist Ryan Stead and bass player Matthew Gendron met singer/guitarist Brandon Lehti at a local show that featured each of their respective bands on the bill. With all but one

of the members just turned 21, they display a maturity and technicality well beyond their years. Their single “Tonight, I Love You” peaked at No. 27 on radio and was on medium rotation for Much Music and Much More Music. The song was a feature on DeGrassi High, and their single “Can You Hear Me Call” was in the Shaun White Skateboarding video game. The band also appeared on an episode of the hit CW network TV series Hellcats and their success led them to a nomination in 2010 for New Group of the Year at the WCMAs. With their experience on the road, and their successful first release in Canada, The Latency has moved forward with their sound and are currently in the studio with renowned producer Jeff Johnson. The Latency have also teamed up with Chief Music Management, manager of Hinder, Daniel Wesley, My Darkest Days, and The Veer Union. Their new single, “Music to Me,” was released in June.

Favourite Music Teacher First Place: Dana Cole-Luder Dana is a graduate of the Classical Music Program at Douglas College and the Jazz and Musical Theatre Program at Vancouver Community College.
