Best dressed windows T he winners of the Downtown Maple Ridge Business Improvement Association Christmas window display contest have been picked. There three different categories this year: animated display, painted window and product display. “Thanks to all the downtown business owners who really went all out and put together a fantastic assortment of beautiful displays,” said Ineke Boekhorst, executive director of the DMRBIA. “It was really hard to pick winners, and we were happy that some of the shoppers contacted us with valuable suggestions.” Winner of the animated display: T’s in Haney Place Mall. “You’ve got to have a look at T’s display, it’s only small, but it’s absolutely adorable, complete with moving Santa and his enormous list of names,” Boekhorst said. Metro Vancouver Regional District board of directors chairperson Lois Jackson is encouraging everyone to be “green angels” this season, and to think about giving gifts that create memories, not garbage. Snowboarding tickets, passes to the opera or theatre, or a gift certificate for bungee jumping are just some of the ideas the regional district suggests to encouraging
green giving. “This year, create memories with the people you love,” Jackson said. “We can continue to celebrate different cultural and religious traditions by making gift choices that reduce garbage and help protect the environment. This holiday season, you can be a green angel, too.” This marks the fourth year in a row that Metro Vancouver and its member municipalities are encouraging residents to have a festive and sustainable holiday season. “Consider that what you purchase will eventually
need to be disposed of ... think about buying higher quality, more durable gifts. Space heating costs alone can account for from 40 to 50 per cent of the average electricity bill depending on how customers heat their homes. B.C. Hydro’s top seven energy-efficient home-heating and lighting tips to help keep your bills low: • Draft-proof your home – Seal gaps and cracks with caulking and weather stripping to keep the heat inside your home, reducing heat loss by up to 10 per cent. • Manage your thermostat – Install a programmable thermostat. Heating costs rise about five per cent for every degree above 20 degrees C that you set your thermostat.
• Shade your windows – Using blinds or drapes on your windows provide insulation in the winter and summer. Heat loss from windows can account for 10-25 per cent of your heating bill in winter. • Maintain your heating system – Tune up your heating equipment and continue to give it regular maintenance. • Add or upgrade insulation – Start in areas that lose the most heat, such as attics, basements and crawl spaces. • Ensure your fireplace is efficient – With wood-burning fireplaces, close the damper tightly when the fireplace is not in use. If you use the fireplace only occasionally, install glass doors. • Use energy-efficient lighting – LEDs use at least 75 per cent less energy than incandescent lighting and can last about 20 years based on average household use.

Enjoy the lights, trees and Christmas magic, kids can skate, push carts on the ice and parents can pull kids in sleds. Buggies and strollers are welcome, but please clean off the wheels. There will be a hot chocolate stand and lots of fun during the holiday season. he Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs has released its list of top tips for holiday fire and carbon monoxide safety. The “12 Days of Holiday Fire Safety” campaign is a compilation of what the CAFC says, based on its unique insights, are the things homeowners need to be extra vigilant about this time of year. According to the CAFC, it’s the small things that can make a big difference in saving lives. “Install smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, never tam-
per with them, change batteries, replace smoke alarms every 10 years and CO alarms every seven years. All these messages and others can never be stated too often,” says Fire Chief Rob Simonds, president of the CAFC. As well, the CAFC is introducing a limited edition Christmas ornament that features the image of beloved fire dog, Sparky. “We want the Sparky ball to be a symbol of holiday fire and carbon monoxide safety,” he says. The 12 Days of Holiday Fire
Safety provides tips against seasonal risks as well as year round precautions. “It’s important to take precautions with the things we enjoy most about the festive season such as candles, holiday lights and cooking because they increase the risk of home fires,” says Carol Heller, a home safety specialist with Kidde Canada and partner to the CAFC. “The drop in temperature is also a contributor to the increased incidence of carbon monoxide exposure.”

s it your turn to be the designated driver? The province, police and ICBC have launched the December impaired driving CounterAttack campaign, and that’s the question they want drivers to ask themselves this holiday season. Plan for a safe ride home and share the responsibility of being the designated driver to help make sure your friends and family get home safely. Police will be conducting CounterAttack road checks across the province in December to raise awareness and help reduce impaired driving crashes. On average, 127 lives are lost in impairedrelated crashes each year in B.C. “Celebrating with family and friends is an important part of the holidays,” said Shirley Bond, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General. “And getting home safely should be part of everyone’s holiday planning. We know that B.C.’s tougher impaired driving laws are working – 45 fewer people have lost their lives since the legislation was introduced last year. We are making great progress and we are committed to building on that success.” Police will be out in full force across the province conducting CounterAttack road checks, said Chief Constable Jamie Graham, Victoria Police and Chair of the B.C. Association of Chiefs of Police Traffic Safety Committee. “As police officers, we see the heartbreaking effects of impaired driving all too often, and we know how easily it can be prevented,” he added. Jon Schubert, ICBC’s president and CEO,
said: “We want everyone to enjoy their holiday season festivities with friends and family, but do it responsibly – plan ahead for a safe ride home. “There are so many alternatives. Set an example – take your turn to be the designated driver. Your smart driving decisions can have a significant influence on others.” ICBC supports CounterAttack through enhanced police enforcement and an awareness campaign, and provides CounterAttack materials to businesses, sports facilities and community groups to help prevent impaired driving. ICBC also lends support to Operation Red Nose, a volunteer service in 12 communities across B.C. that provides safe rides home to drivers who have been drinking or feel unfit to drive during the holiday season. Operation Red Nose is available in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. Find free-range turkeys S ome parts of the day, they’ll grub around in the grass looking for insects, bits of grain or grass and whatever else they can find. Of if it’s too hot or cold, they’ll go back inside the barn, where they can get more feed. At Skye-Hi Farms in Yarrow, it’s basically their choice. As free-range turkeys, hens mostly, the birds get to do whatever they please – until the big day comes when they’re carted off to the processors to become Christmas or Thanksgiving dinners. Trevor Allen is a former Maple Ridge resident who used to operate Skye-Hi Farms on Gilker Hill, just off Kanaka Way. Now he’s doing the same thing on a larger scale in the lush fields of Yarrow, near Chilliwack, where the lifestyle is idyllic as it gets if you’re a farm animal. The birds spend their nights in clean barns, then in the morning are let out to graze around in the grass to their heart’s content. They’re not fed any medications or growth hormones and are certified free-range. While Skye-Hi has left Maple Ridge, Meridian Meats’ Maple Ridge location on Lougheed Highway, a few kilometres from the old farm, remains its biggest customer. Josh Penner at Meridian Meats says the turkeys sell for about $4.50 a pound and are worth the extra cents per pound. “They are the best turkeys. They are the juiciest turkeys.” Part of the appeal of ordering a free-range turkey is that people know the animals are raised in optimal conditions. And eating an unmedicated bird with no growth hormones is another bonus. “People are more health conscious, there’s no doubt about it,” said Penner. The Skye-Hi birds are the only certified free-

range birds that he knows of that are sold in stores, he says. And Meridian Meats buys all of them, this year 700 birds, about five times from a decade ago. To show people the conditions of the freerange birds, Penner has posted a video on his website, http://meridianmeats.ca/, showing Skye-Hi Farms operation. Meridian also sells about 300 free-run birds that come from Rossdown Farms in Abbotsford. Free-run turkeys stay in the barn confines, although they can run where they please. People like to know where their food comes from, says Penner. It’s one family business supporting another family business. At Hopcott Premium Meats, free-run turkeys from JD Farms in Langley are also available.

The Humane Society of Canada says that people and birds can both benefit when humans assist their feathered friends by supplying them with a continual supply of quality bird feed. According to Al Hickey, with the Humane Society of Canada, it is a good idea to learn what species of birds live in your area, then find out what types of feed would be good for them. “To learn about local species of birds and the foods they like, you can talk to employees who sell bird feed, as well as local nature and bird watching groups and animal protection organizations.” According to HSC Executive Director Michael O’Sullivan, it may take a while for birds to discover their new food source, but says that they will find bird feeders and gratefully return on a regular basis.
“It is important to ensure that once you start supplying local birds with food that you keep food in the feeder until the birds’ natural food supplies become plentiful once again in the spring.”

Bring trees to the search and rescue building at 23598, on 105th Avenue, beside Planet Ice in Maple Ridge on Jan. 7-8 and 14-15, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tree pick-up service can be requested by sending an
email to scoutchipping@ gmail.com, including your name, phone number, address and preferred date (Jan. 8-9, 15- 16). A minimum $10 donation is required for the tree pickup service. All chipping is by donation. Bartlett Tree Experts supplies the chipper and truck. This event is the search
and rescue team’s largest fundraiser of the year. Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue is a volunteer group, one 80 such groups in B.C. Its members respond to calls from local law enforcement to wilderness and urban searches and rescues. Golden Ears Provincial Park is the location of many of the team’s responses.

he holiday season is upon us and so are Grinches and Scrooges out to take your money by unsavory means. Whether you are online or in a store, BBB advises consumers to be on the lookout for scammers and know the company’s policies before you pay. Take steps to avoid common problems such as items that can’t be returned, gift cards that can’t be used and orders that never arrive: 1. Think twice before clicking a link sent to you via email as they could lead to viruses and allow Grinches to get your personal and banking information. Check www.mbc.bbb.org for safe websites and stores. 2. Make sure to check out the businesses privacy policy before giving out personal information. If shopping online, be sure your computer has the most up to date anti- spyware. 3. Keep all your receipts and read the fine print: Online businesses are required by law to send you your product within 30 days unless otherwise stated or you do get your money back. Understand that refund and exchange policies can differ significantly from one seller to another. 4. Pay with a credit card, instead of cash or bank card: If it’s a scam you’ll have record of it and are more likely to get your money back, dispute the charges if you don’t receive the item or dispute charges made to your account. No other form of payment offers this. Also make sure to check your credit card statements often and not just when your bill comes in. 5. Beware of gift card scams: Con artists can get important numbers off of the gift cards before you have even bought them by scanning the identifying number
before hand. They can then go onto the website and see when it is activated, once activated they can use your gift card to purchase items. Instead, ask for gift cards behind the counter instead of the ones displayed and use your gift cards as soon as possible. 6. Don’t leave your purchases in plain sight in your car: The holidays are a car thief’s prime time to break in and steal your purchases. So either remove your purchases from your car or make sure they are out of sight. Unlike the Dr. Seuss story those gifts wont be returned by the Grinch to your car because his heart has suddenly grown. 7. Verify validities of charities The sneakiest Scrooges will often adopt a similar name to known charities, so make sure you do your research and always make out your payment to the charity and not individual solicitors. 8. Make a list and check it twice: Often consumers will head out to the malls and spend more money than intended, so make a list of what you want to spend and keep track of how much you are spending. 9. If going with a layaway plan check out their policy, and if they are BBB accredited: Layaway is an excellent option when paying for something pricier make sure to find out all the details, like how much you need to put down, interest costs, when payments are due, and their return policy so that there are no surprises at the end. 10. Beware of deals that sound to good to be true. They probably are: When shopping online there are hundreds of website offering to beat out the next website with their own deals. Make sure to check if the website is legitimate. Sometimes paying less can often cost you more.

Make this Christmas safe
I
t’s that time of year again, when we stock our fridges with egg nog and rush off to local stores to find the best deals on Christmas gifts for loved ones. The holiday season is a time for fun, family and festivity, so don’t let criminals ruin your holiday cheer. In order to avoid heartaches and disappointments, here are a few precautions, courtesy of the RCMP, that people should keep in mind when venturing out during the holidays. If you prefer to use cash for your purchases and plan on stopping by a bank on the way to the mall, don’t withdraw more money than you need. Having large sums of cash on you isn’t recommended as thieves have been known to target parking lots around financial institutions. Earlier this year distraction thefts were occurring to people who had recently left banks after withdrawing large sums of cash. Once at the mall, parents are reminded to keep an eye on their little ones and to never use stores, displays or video arcades as a baby-sitter. Sadly, children are abducted every year, often in malls or department stores. Have a plan of action and ensure your children understand it in the event they become separated from you. Suggest that they make their way to the nearest cashier to tell them they are lost and to stay there for assistance. Leaving your children unattended in shopping carts while you shop is not recommended as this can lead to injuries from children falling out of the carts. Strapping your child into the cart is a good idea, but please be aware that this may still be hazardous to your children as they may struggle to get out and tip the cart over in the process. In order to put a damper on pickpockets and thieves that may be wandering through the mall, follow these simple rules: • men should carry their wallets in their
front pockets as opposed to their back pockets or jackets; • women should carry their purses close to their body, but should not wrap their purse straps around themselves – doing so could cause you to be dragged down to the ground in the event that your purse is snatched; • avoid using revolving doors as thieves with good timing can grab your parcels and get away by the time it takes you to emerge; • never leave your purchases unattended, even for a short period of time. Parking is almost always a problem when it comes to the holiday season. If possible, park under lighting and close to entrances and exits. Under no circumstances should you leave your children unattended in your vehicle, even for a short period of time. Place your purchases in your trunk to avoid drawing attention to your vehicle. Know that if you place your purchases in the back seat you may return to your vehicle to find your windows smashed and all of your gifts stolen. If you use a GPS to assist you in getting from one place to another, a good idea is to remove it from plain view as well or take it with you while you shop. When your day of shopping is over , a good practice is to have your keys ready when you approach your vehicle. By doing so you avoid the clumsiness of trying to find your keys and juggling with your shopping bags, which delays getting into your vehicle. If you feel uncomfortable about walking to your vehicle alone in the dark, consider asking a security guard to escort you. And last, but certainly not least, if you’re going to be heading out to office Christmas parties or get-togethers with family and friends, please don’t drink and drive. Counter Attack check stops which focus on impaired driving enforcement will be in full effect in a continued effort to save lives.
