Help choosing the right Christmas tree H
ow to choose the right Christmas tree? You want to find a tree that looks perky and fresh. The needles should bend easily between your fingers. Needles that snap under light pressure indicate that the tree is too dry. As well, avoid a tree with a yellowish tinge; this is a sign of nutrient deficiency. Measure carefully to ensure your tree will comfortably
fit inside your house once it’s placed in a tree stand. Tree sizes can be hard to gauge out in the field. If you tend to use heavy ornaments, you want to choose a tree whose branches will withstand the extra weight. Noble Firs and Grand Firs are particularly sturdy. If smell is everything to you, choose a Grand Fir. Their citrus-y needles will continue
to emanate a delightful smell throughout the entire Christmas season. What are the different types of Christmas tree and what makes them differ from each other? • The Douglas Fir is the quickest-growing tree. Its a light tree with a pleasant smell and a nice conical shape. Its soft needles are perfect for little hands and the stumps tend not to be
the Noble is known for its excellent needle retention. It grows half as quickly as the Douglas Fir and is priced higher as a result. • Grand Firs are beautifully green and bushy with soft, flat needles that release a citrus-like scent when crushed. Its branches are light, spring back nicely when brushed, and so wonderfully dense that you may lose an ornament or two in their branches.
too obtuse for a standard tree stand. • The Fraser Fir is the soldier of the fir trees. It stands very straight with upright, stiff branches – perfect for heavy ornaments. The Fraser has a faint bluish colour and excellent needle retention. • Noble Firs are similar to Frasers in that they have thick, round branches that are exceptionally sturdy and evenly spaced. As well,
How long should Christmas trees last? At least until after Christmas. Frasers and Nobles have really great needle retention, but any tree will lose its needles if not well cared for. The key is to give the tree a fresh cut (about a half inch) before bringing it inside and to ensure that it has enough water at all times. If at any point the water line drops beneath the level of the
stump, the tree will seal over and won’t take in water. As well, trees need to be kept away from heat sources such as fireplaces, furnaces or very warm rooms. Is there a trick to get your Christmas tree to stand straight? Yes, cut it straight. You can also use rocks or bricks to stabilize a leaning tree. Information provided by Alouette Tree Farm.

an Reaveley has experienced the struggles young children face when they lose a parent. His four kids were left without a mother and he without a wife after Charlene Reaveley was killed in a hit-and-run accident earlier this year in Coquitlam. But while his family is still struggling with the loss, Reaveley is hoping to turn their grief into something positive and help others this holiday season. With help from the Charlene Reaveley Children’s Charity Society, which he helped launch earlier this year, Reaveley and several supporters are holding a toy drive in the Tri-Cities to help young children dealing with the loss of a parent. “This allows them just to be a kid again,” he said. “I think that is the most important thing. They have kind of lost that a bit. My kids have struggled with it and I think Christmas might be a good jump-start for them to get them back into things.” He said Charlene loved Christmas and he hopes the toy drive will become an annual event and help keep her memory alive. Coquitlam Canadian Tire owner Paul Droulis has placed toy boxes at the retailer’s Tri-City locations (1200 Sequin Ave., Coquitlam and at the Port Coquitlam store owned by Ingmar Wilkens at 2125 Hawkins St.) and Reaveley has set up a box where he works at Maple Ridge Chrysler (11911 West St., Maple Ridge). B12 -- Wednesday, December 7, 2011 -- THE NEWS - Holiday Magic
Top holiday movies of all time If you and the family have some time to sit down and relax this holiday season, here’s a selection of some of the top Christmas movies of all time:
that’s headed to the North Pole. The film, starring Tom Hanks, is an adaptation of the beloved book by Chris Van Allsburg. 6.6 stars
his new family, even his emotionally-stunted dad, and manages to bring the Christmas spirit to even the most jaded New Yorkers. 6.8 stars
11. How The Grinch Stole Christmas: A big budget remake of the classic cartoon about a creature intent on stealing Christmas. 5.7 stars
9. Elf: Will Ferrell brings the laughs in this 2003 movie about a boy who was raised by elves. When Buddy the Elf heads off to New York to find his real dad, he has a bit of a hard time fitting in with his elf costume and love of all things maple syrup. But he soon manages to win over
8. Home Alone: Any movie that reigns the box office for 12 weeks straight is bound to become a classic. In 1990, Macauley Culkin starred in his breakout role as an eight-year-old who gets left behind when his family takes off for vacation. While he’s home alone, he’s forced to deal with
10. Polar Express: On Christmas Eve, a boy who is hoping to believe in the magic of Christmas boards a train
two burglars who have cased the neighborhood to steal Christmas gifts. Using smarts, wit, and a few crafty traps, he manages to ward off the burglars and reunite with his family just in time for the holiday. 7.1 stars 7. Frosty The Snowman: A living snowman and a little girl struggle to elude a greedy magician who is after the snowman’s magic hat. 7.3 stars 7. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation:
In this laugh-out-loud movie form 1989, Clark Griswold (played by Chevy Chase) is gungho about having a good old-fashioned family Christmas – even when his dead-beat brother shows up and parks his RV in the driveway, and the cat gets electrocuted by the Christmas tree. After all, it’s not Christmas without a little drama, right? 7.3 stars 6. The Muppet Christmas Carol: The Muppet characters tell their version of the classic
tale of an old and bitter miser’s redemption on Christmas Eve. 7.4 stars 5. Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town: This 1970 TV movie (made in stop-motion animation) is also an old holiday favorite. It’s about Kris Kringle – the man who is Santa Claus – and how he brings toys to children in a town that has outlawed them. But what really makes this movie a Christmas classic is the fearsome Winter Warlock’s transformation into a compassionate wizard with the wonderful song “Put One Foot In Front of the Other.” 7.8 stars 4. The Miracle on 34th Street: In this sweet 1947 movie, a Macy’s executive tries to find a new store Santa. She hires an old man named Kris Kringle, who claims to be the one-and-only Santa Claus. Of course, such claims can get you into trouble and Kris ends up being hospitalized for some kind of delusional disorder. Hope comes in the form of a young man who wants to help Kris prove that he is really and truly Santa. 7.9 stars

3. The Nightmare Before Christmas: Who knew sleigh bells and ghoulish shrunken heads went so well together? In 1993, Tim Burton certainly didn’t disappoint with this sweet tale of Halloween meets Christmas. When Jack Skellington grows tired of Halloween Town, he wanders into the forest and accidentally opens a portal to a magical place called Christmas Town. Can he convince his fellow townspeople that this new town is a magical place, or will he be forced to watch as Christmas Town is taken over and its magical spirit robbed? 8 stars 3. Rudolph the RedNosed Reindeer: This classic made-for-TV Christmas movie
premiered in 1964 and has been delighting generations of kids ever since. It tells the story of Rudolph, a reindeer with a nose that lights up. He’s looking for a place where he belongs. Special guest appearances by the Abominable Snowman and the misfit toys make this movie extraspecial. 8 stars 3. A Christmas Story: Young Ralphie Parker wants only one thing: a Red Ryder Carbine Action 200 Shot Range Model Air Rifle. His parents don’t want him to shoot his eye out and refuse to get it. Wacky hijinks happen as Ralphie develops some very creative ploys to convince his mother and father that this is the only thing they should give him. 8 stars 3. A Christmas Carol: An old bitter miser is given a chance for redemption when he is haunted by ghosts on Christmas Eve. 8 stars 2. A Charlie Brown Christmas: In this half-hour Christmas special, Charlie Brown becomes the director of the school holiday pageant and goes out with Linus to buy an aluminum tree for the show. Instead, they bring back a forlorn real tree. Our hapless hero finds himself dismayed by the rampant commercialization of the holidays and searches for the true meaning of Christmas. 8.3 stars 1. It’s a Wonderful Life: A man, about to commit suicide during the holidays because he’s financially ruined, is stopped by an angel who shows him what life would be like if he’d never existed. It’s a charming movie — part romance, part pathos, and a celebration of life. 8.7 stars - Amazon.com, - imbd.com , - fun.familyeducation.

osley’s is once again hosting Pet Photos with Santa for Katie’s Place on Sunday Dec. 11. Furry, feathered or scaled, all pets are welcome. The event, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., is a fundraiser for the animal shelter. Donations help provide vet care and shelter for hundreds of homeless animals. Katie’s Place celebrated its 10th year in October and has rescued over 3,400 animals since opening in 2001. The volunteer-run shelter focuses on desperate cases that have no other options. Terrified, ill or injured, elderly or unweaned – the volunteers bend over backwards to make
room for those in greatest need. Numerous feral cats have been trapped and altered and their offspring saved from a compromised existence. Several loved cats from families struggling financially have been spayed and neutered. Helping address the pet overpopulation crisis is a critical component of the work the grassroots organization does. Come out to Bosley’s at 22745 Dewdney Trunk Road d so your pet can visit Santa. Not only will you receive a wonderful Christmas memento, you’ll be supporting a labour of love.

A: First of all, make the healthiest choice available! To prevent poor choices from really taking a toll on your digestive function, here are a few tips to tame the tummy troubles: take a broad spectrum digestive enzyme to calm gas & bloating with each meal; take 2 probiotics just before bed on an empty stomach to improve digestive function; and if heartburn is an issue, try DGL or chewable licorice tablets before each meal.

Q: “Common Member Issue: How do I find the time and energy to work-out during the busy holiday season?” A: “Our Solution: Begin making plans to stay fit, before the busy holiday rush. Make a schedule that allows time for working out and preparing healthy meals ahead of time. When planning your holiday workout schedule, be realistic! Your workouts may have to be shorter than usual. This is okay. Not only is a twenty to thirty minute workout much better than none at all, but once you have started, chances are you will find that you really do have the energy and time to go longer!”
