Funding reinstated for jobs program But only for three more months, for now by Phi l M elnyc h u k staff reporter The supported work program at the Ridge Meadows Recycling Depot has three more months before 29 mentally challenged people who work there have to find “real work for real pay.” The program, which has been around for about two decades, was supposed to end in September, but will continue to Jan. 1, following a firestorm of criticism from parents and Maple Ridge council directed at the ministry and Community Living B.C. for a new policy in which the developmentally disabled are found jobs in the private sector. TLink study to look at WCE expansion Should take a year to complete by Phi l M elnyc h u k staff reporter Mayors along the West Coast Express line will finally get their wish, a serious consideration about the expansion of the commuter line beyond the five rush-hour trains that currently run into Vancouver. Expansion will be part of
an overall strategic study of the entire service that’s now underway as TransLink prepares to renegotiate its contract with CP Rail for use of its track. The current contract expires in 2015. TransLink spokesman Drew Snider said it should take a year to complete the study, “so when we go to the table with CP, we have an idea what our needs are.” However, if an expansion of the commuter rail service doesn’t cover immediately
the costs, that doesn’t mean automatic rejection because TransLink has to look at the long-term as well, Snider said. Depending on the timing, offering midday or weekend service could be a catalyst for growth of other services, he said. “It’s obvious it’s well received by the people out there.” The strategic study will also include the yet-to-be-built Evergreen SkyTrain line from Port Coquitlam to Burnaby
and how that could complement the West Coast Express. Following the February 2010 Winter Olympics, during which daytime trains ran packed from Mission to Vancouver, mayors along the line asked TransLink to study expansion of the service. However, their plea was rejected by TransLink. That could have been because TransLink wasn’t ready to begin its study, Snider added. See WCE, p13

The husband and wife made it out of the house in the 12900-block of Alouette Road with minutes to spare after the smell of smoke and flames woke them up around
12:30 a.m. They literally got out with the clothes on their back, said fire chief Dane Spence. The fire completely destroyed the single-storey rancher, located near the women’s prison. The house had cement roof tiles and once the fire got into the attic, it raced quickly through the entire structure. Spence said. The weight of the tiles and damaged trusses caused the roof to collapse. As a result, firefighters battled the blaze from outside and made sure
embers did not spread to a thickly wooded area nearby. “It wasn’t safe to go inside once the fire was in the roof,” said Spence, adding that the cause of the fire was accidental. Crews remained on scene well into daylight, extinguishing hot spots. At the height of the fire, the entire department was put on standby. The fire department still has control of the scene and brought in an excavator Tuesday to sift through the charred rubble. Spence said the couple lost their home and everything inside it.
Rob Jensen, a neighbour, rushed outside when he heard fire trucks and watched as flames engulfed the entire structure. He was worried the large fire would spread to nearby trees and relieved when crews got it under control. “The house was literally on fire from the garage right to the other side of the house,” said Jensen. “If the forest caught fire, we would have had minutes to get out of there.” See video @ mapleridgenews.com
Conditional sentence for mailing obscene pictures Man will spend six months under house arrest by M o n i s h a M a r t i n s staff reporter A 61-year-old Pitt Meadows man who posted lewd photographs of himself to a much younger female neighbour will spend the next six months under house arrest.
Momchilo Michael Zivojinovich was handed a 12-month conditional sentence on Monday six months after he pleaded guilty to one count of mailing obscene matter. Zivojinovich admitted he sent a 24-year-old woman who lived in his townhouse complex two photographs of his genitals. Sexually explicit notes were handwritten on the back of both photographs. His lawyer, Frank Dorchester,
cited childhood sexual abuse as a factor that influenced Zivojinovich’s behaviour. “There is evidence of a correlation between being abused and doing something yourself,” Dorchester told the court. Fingerprints found on the photographs led police to Zivojinovich, who was in the police database because of a previous conviction on six counts of making indecent phone calls. Zivojinovich is confined to his
townhouse for the first six months of the conditional sentence, but can leave for medical emergencies, doctor’s appointments, employment and to walk his dog. For the remaining six months, Zivojinovich will be bound by a curfew from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. Besides the conditional sentence, he also received three years probation order, must abstain from drugs and alcohol, attend counselling and have no contact with the victim.
An RCMP officer had his nose broken in an altercation with a man on Friday night in Maple Ridge. Police were called about the man around 7:30 p.m. because he claimed he wanted to injure people and had armed himself with a knife. Shortly after receiving the call, a uniformed Mountie found the 27-year-old on 240th Street near McLure Avenue. Supt. Dave Walsh said as the officer approached, the suspect began punching him. The assault continued for a few minutes until other police officers arrived and got the man to surrender. He was arrested and held for a court appearance on Monday. “I’m happy to report that neither our officer nor the suspect were seriously injured in this physical encounter, although our member did suffer a broken nose,” added Walsh. “The details of this case are now being put before the courts, so I will not comment on those any further at this time. Information I have is the suspect has received some mixed martial arts training in the past.”
Emergencies do happen Following last week’s earthquake off Vancouver Island, municipal and emergency responders in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows are finalizing the details of their annual emergency exercise designed to keep skills sharp. The drill will take place Oct. 5 and 6, emergency program manager Ceri Marlo told council Monday. Twenty-five agencies will be involved.

He’s the kind of guy who likes to take on a challenge, whether it’s driving a car off a cliff or taking over the reins at city hall. “Sitting around a table with 50 people while making a movie is a lot like being on city council, only with a lot more at stake,” said Paller, who will be vying for the mayor’s seat in Pitt Meadows come November. “If you make a mistake in the movies, it’s very costly.”

Paller, who has coordinated special effects in the film and television industry since the early eighties, doesn’t see his lack of political experience as a drawback. In fact, he proudly says he’s an average guy, an ordinary citizen who just has a knack for getting things done. “I’ve always been on time, on budget and my stuff works,” said Paller, who has already begun his election campaign, printed business cards and decorated a 1934 Ford pickup with blue, white and red signs that read: “Gary Paller for Mayor”. Paller, who has lived in Pitt Meadows for 13 years, decided to seek the mayor’s seat after hearing from other residents who were concerned about rising taxes and the city’s growing debt. “In the 13 years I’ve lived in Pitt Meadows, my taxes have more

A safe return Kienan Hebert’s return home is as remarkable as it is fortunate. But it seems more, beyond an unlocked door. Twelve hours after the three-year-old boy’s family made an emotional plea to his captor, a 911 call was received at 3 a.m. Sunday that he was back in his home, where he was found sleeping with the three blankets that went missing with him four days before. Questions remain how this occurred, how an abductor could return to the scene of the crime undetected and escape arrest. The unfenced Sparwood property is in a new subdivision with only one road in and out. Police, in response to criticism that the suspect, Randall Hopley, remained at large, only admitted they “facilitated” the return. The family had vacated the house and was staying with neighbours. They left the doors unlocked. Police, who had previously been monitoring the area, were no where to be seen. And that’s the way it had to be. If the suspect felt in danger, he might have run, and maybe Kienan wouldn’t be back with his family right now. The boy’s safety was all that mattered. The fact he was returned and is safe after being abducted, as police have said, is rare. And for that, police are due our greatest respect. Revealing much more about how this was accomplished would only benefit other potential abductors. What’s more important is the health and happiness of Kienan and his family. Their ordeal is not over. And now that police have arrested of their lone suspect – a convicted sex offender with a long list of break-and-enters, who admitted in court to trying to remove another child from a house in 2007 – we can look at fixing the justice system that allows people like him to roam free. – The News

Power producers plead their case VICTORIA – B.C.’s private power producers held a news conference here in the capital last week, to plead with the B.C. government not to back down from its target of selfsufficiency in clean energy by 2016. The review panel looking at B.C. Hydro B.C. Views rates recommended Tom Fletcher that one way the utility might save money would be to change the definition of self-sufficiency. Currently that means having enough domestic clean electricity supply even in low water years. The B.C. Clean Energy Association was supported by University of Victoria climate scientist Andrew Weaver, who wants B.C. to continue to develop its unique clean energy resources. That will reduce B.C. Hydro’s reliance on the open electricity market, and help to reduce demand for further coal and natural gas generation. Weaver says people still skeptical about climate change should check out the current state of Arctic sea ice. It has retreated drastically again this summer and may reach an even smaller size than it did in 2007, which was the biggest melt since satellite records became available in 1979. The five greatest ice retreats have been in the past five years. The U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Centre reported Sept. 6 that both the Northwest Passage through Canada’s Arctic and the sea route north of Russia “appear to be
open.” Another supporter is Judith Sayers, a former chief from Nuu-Chah-Nulth territory on Vancouver Island, who now teaches aboriginal law at the University of Victoria. She talked about how a small hydro power project near Port Alberni allowed her people to learn business, with a light footprint on land recovering from a century of industrial logging. And she said that more than half of the First Nations in B.C. now have some interest in a power project. Association president Paul Kariya explained how critics, notably the NDP’s John Horgan, manipulate rate figures to create an impression that independent power is hugely overpriced. One out of three proposals never makes it to production. B.C.’s second wind farm, the Dokie project near Chetwynd, went broke, then was taken over and completed by Plutonic Power Corp and General Electric. Here’s an indication of how quickly the clean energy field is evolving: This year Plutonic merged with Magma Energy Corp., which has geothermal assets in Iceland and Nevada. The merged company, Alterra Power Corp., has backed away from the vast Bute Inlet run-of-river proposal on the B.C. coast, but its nearby East Toba and Montrose river generators and the Dokie wind farm have performed better than expected. The Bute project won’t go anywhere until the North American power market changes dramatically. Currently the market is low, due mainly to an abundance of cheap natural gas and government-subsidized wind power in the U.S.
Horgan claims private investment is a nefarious scheme to create a “parallel generating system” for private profit. That seems to be his key criterion for acceptable small hydro: as long as nobody makes a profit. Professional environmentalists claim rivers have been destroyed. Their favourite villain, Ashlu Creek near Squamish, has been running smoothly for nearly two years, its critics silenced. A new run-of-river cluster around Harrison Lake has energized two remote native villages.

This is exactly the attitude that leaves people questioning, “why bother trying.” People like you, cb, undermine the very fabric of our education system and only serve to prove that we need now, more than ever, to have great teachers. I certainly hope that you are not asking your boss for a raise this year, or complaining about gas prices, or the cost of living. Think for just one second about what it is that we ask our teachers to do and the salary that we give them. Yes, they earn every penny and they deserve much more. My sister-inlaw has been teaching for three years. She makes $34,000, if she is lucky. Does that number seem right to you? When you start a new job, the standard form from the government assumes that you will make $39,000. Are you seeing the same problem with this as I am? When she came out of school, she was a substitute teacher and sometimes went three weeks without being paid because there was no work. This is the same for every other teacher. Some work ‘temp’ positions for the entirety of their careers because they cannot re-locate to a school where there is a classroom available. And what “perks” is it that you speak of? You think the prospect of being layed off each summer is a perk? You think that they “get to take two months off?” Most teachers struggle trying to make ends meet for two months because no one wants to hire them for the “summer,” and with every teacher being layed off, those positions in teaching academies and summer school fill up pretty quick. I cannot believe that in today’s society we are still failing to see that teachers are underpaid. These are the people who affect change in our society. If not for the teachers, then who would teach those who go on to build electric cars, iPads, or complex road systems. Of course teachers continually want more. I am willing to bet that you would ask for a raise at the end of the year. I am willing to bet that on some occasion you have or will go into a salary negotiation. Why not teachers? Are we to understand that the value of a teacher (those who produce the great thinkers of today and tomorrow) is less than that of the man who operates the garbage truck? Educators are the reason that we are all able to think for ourselves, problem solve, create, and be corporate executives and doctors. Each one of us owes at least one teacher in our lives a huge thanks for giving us the tools to become incredible people and opening the world up for us to explore. Before we all go off complaining about teachers asking to be paid what they are worth, consider what it is that they have provided for us. Teachers are the reason that our great nation is great.

Re: Out of order (News Views, Sept. 9). Why Gordon Campbell does not deserve the honour of the Order of British Columbia, let me count the reasons. As a political centrist, or what would in a proper world would be a Liberal, I find if not the first, but the one item that Mr. Campbell has affected me the most negatively, his destruction of B.C.’s political centre. Mr. Campbell literally hi-
jacked the Liberal brand, in one of his many examples of deceit, because he recognized that, provincially, Conservatives could not be elected in B.C., so he engineered one of his many political coup-de-tats and deposed Gordon Wilson a real Liberal, as leader of the B.C. Liberals, and managed to drag them to the ultra-right of the political spectrum, leaving B.C. with no political centre. I can never forgive him for that particular deception as

Rail, HST, and countless other abuses of power that we will probably not even find out about for years to come, are just more of the same and are to be expected of a man of Mr. Campbell’s elitist character, who considers himself above the laws and constraints of mere mortals. The fact that he managed
to be elected three times is a glaring testament to how undemocratic and antiquated our present electoral system is. If people like Mr. Campbell do deserve the order of B.C. and are touted to be a positive role model for the people and children of B.C., I have to wonder of its significance or value at all, which is very sad because there are many that actually do credit to the honourable Order of B.C. ‘Don’t attach smart metres to my house’ EDITOR, THE NEWS:
I have written to B.C. Hydro on several occasions and told them that my home is off limits to smart metres. I am concerned about potential health issues linked to the technology these meters utilize, the possibility for privacy invasion, and the irresponsibility our government is displaying in claiming these meters are safe and will save money when, in fact, neither is true. While I understand the doubts some people have in regard to wireless technologies being potentially harmful. The World Health Organization has recognized them as being so and, whether our government is on board or not, we must not be the last to protect ourselves from the danger.
To call these meters ‘green’ is an affront to every environmentally conscious person out there. There are other issues attached to smart metres, not the least of which is that they are not going to be costeffective. In fact, the pilot project for smart metres was discontinued in 38 counties in California alone, because it was found that they would be more expensive than initially projected. The maintenance and upgrading costs are supposed to be quite high – a cost that will be passed on to the consumer. Additionally, B.C. Hydro has admitted that this specific technology makes it possible for the individual’s movements to be monitored. Your most intimate personal life is under scrutiny
when these little boxes are affixed to your homes. The fact that they constantly pulse radiation that can hurt your family’s health is just a sidebar. When I voiced these concerns to B.C. Hydro I received a series of condescending letters suggesting I don’t ‘understand’ the situation. I have educated myself about this kind of technology, and I don’t want it attached to my house. That is my fundamental right as a Canadian. I worked hard to get my home, and continue to do so to maintain it, and I should not be forced to allow a government agency to do whatever it wishes to it. Re: Contract talk enough to put you to sleep (Health Care, Sept. 2). In this article, Dr. Marco Terwiel asks the important question: Did the patients in our local hospital receive inferior anesthesia service? He answers his question with, “Absolutely not.” In my experience, his response to the above question is completely wrong. A more accurate answer would be, “Yes, sometimes.” On May 30, 1986, my 20-year-old daughter, Kari Lynn Boivin, was scheduled to have exploratory surgery due to severe abdominal pain. Kari had a well-documented history of not being able to be administered general anesthetic, but of
responding well to spinal anesthetic procedure. Prior to her surgery on May 30, 1986, this medical history was communicated clearly from myself, Kari, Kari’s long-time family physician, the surgeon, and nurses to a family physician who had been chosen to perform the anesthetic procedure on Kari that day. Still, my daughter died. With the facts in mind, it seems rather obvious to state that the correct answer to another question posed by Dr. Terwiel – “ ... should you be worried?” In regards to allowing a family physician rather than a trained anesthesiologist to administer to you would be: “Yes.” But, perhaps even more

While motorists complain about another two-cent-a-litre tax on gasoline to fund the Evergreen Line SkyTrain line in Coquitlam, he points out that TransLink pays for the road projects in Metro Vancouver, as well. The West Coast Express is great, but that runs only during rush

He promotes shopping locally, supports the Haney Farmer’s Market and preserving the Agricultural Land Pope Reserve and continuing to focus development on Maple Ridge’s downtown. “The best way to improve our local economy is to spend our money locally.” He’s hesitant about what to do with the Albion flats, the subject of a decade of planning and debate. A council proposal for development of the ALR land is currently before the Agricultural Land Commission. If the commission approves that, the District of Maple Ridge may be committed to the plan. “So what’s done is done.” Whenever possible, though, he wants to preserve farmland and promote

farming and eco-tourism. Pope admits it’s going to be a challenge to defeat the incumbents on council who have name recognition. One of his goals is to have a plan created, at least on the d r a w i n g board, for a major, multi-use trail in Maple Ridge that can be used by hikers, rollerbladers, walkers, and recreational and commuter cyclists. He points to the 24-kilometre Central Valley Greenway that runs from New Westminster to Vancouver, giving joggers and cyclists a protected route most of the way. Another example is the 60-km Galloping Goose Trail, connecting Sooke to Victoria. Even Pitt Meadows has an off-road bike path south of Lougheed Highway, east of the Pitt River Bridge. “There are lots of good examples to follow.”

Alex Pope wants to get on to Maple Ridge council and continue to improve the plight of pedallers. Pope, a part-time computer programmer who bikes to work in Vancouver two days week (one and threequarter hours each way), says progress in creating cycling paths in Maple Ridge has been spotty. Too many gaps exist between cycling paths that provide a safe route away from cars. After reading the Official Community Plan, he was impressed by the goals of having residents well-served by transit and infrastructure to support active transportation, like cycling and walking. “Unfortunately, we do not seem to be making sufficient progress in making this a reality. A significant number of Maple Ridge residents have no transit service directly available to them and the cycling infrastructure that currently exists suffers from gaps that discourage people from using it.”

It’s one of the saddest things he’s seen one of the worst moves made by senior governments,” added Coun. Al Hogarth. “From my perspective, I hope we can go to the mat on this one,” Hogarth said. He wants someone from Community Living to visit the recycling depot. Ridge Meadows Recycling Society executivedirector Kim Day told council Monday that Community Living B.C. has “completely withdrawn the funding for this program.” But a day later, she was told the contract will be extended until Jan. 1. “We’re still unhappy – but we’re somewhat optimistic.” The three-month transition time will allow the recycling society a chance to work with Community Living B.C. “to come up with something that works for everyone.” Currently, Community Living pays the recycling society $270,000 a year for the supported work program, which allows 29 developmentally disabled people to work part-time at the depot for minimum wage. The contract also funds three support workers. “To say that working at the recycling depot is not real work, I just think is insulting. “Every scrap of work done there is work that needs to be done,” added Coun. Linda King. She also wants to find out what will happen to the money, if the program is cancelled.

They’re working.” While the recycling depot can survive the program’s cancellation, the change will also be felt at Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Community Services, where the position of the volunteer support coordinator was also to be cut this fall, saving Community Living B.C. about $61,000 in funding for that program. Gertie Goudswaard is the volunteer coordinator and solves problems and works out schedules for 28 developmentally disabled clients who provide about 5,500 volunteer hours yearly at 14 non-profit agencies, such as Friends in Need Food Bank, the SPCA and Meals on Wheels. Without help in monitoring with constant issues, only about four of the volunteers will be able to keep their positions, because the community groups lack the resources to deal with the disabled. That could mean more money spent providing care in other ways as the clients lose social contact, jobs skills and integration with the community. “This is actually a job to them,” said Christy Rogge, program director at Community Services.

‘It will feed Evergreen Line’ WCE from front Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin said TransLink general manager Fred Cummings told him about the study after reading Daykin’s comments following an August visit to Maple Ridge by the government’s rural MLA tour. The mayor told MLAs that TransLink was doing a $250,000 feasibility study about a gondola to SFU, while there was nothing for studying commuter rail expansion. “I think it’s going to feed the Evergreen Line. It’s such a successful service.” When you ask for more trains, Daykin said you have that data in place. “If you have the facts, you can make a more compelling argument.” Daykin pointed out that discussions about commuter rail service began in 1986 and the first train didn’t run until 1995. Pitt Meadows Mayor Don MacLean hadn’t heard of the study, but said that expansion beyond the five morning and evening rush-hour trains into Vancouver has been a long-time goal.

Marina owners say bylaw changes ‘unfair’ New zoning would limit development options on property by M o n i s h a M a r t i n s staff reporter The owners of a Pitt Meadows marina are panning proposed changes to the city’s zoning bylaw which could drastically change what development is permitted on their property. Northland Properties called the plan to switch from a CS-1
zone, which permits a broad range of commercial uses to an outdoor recreation zone with fewer permitted uses “unfair”. Northland told city council it purchased the property in 2007 because of the CS-1 zoning which has limited restrictions on density and lot size. The proposed outdoor recreation zone “takes away a very large majority of these rights”. In a note to council, Northland wrote the owners proceeded with the purchase of the Re-
ichenbach Road property “in good faith and trust in the municipality that the CS-1 zoning would remain.” Bernie Malach, general counsel for Northland, said they are currently working on a solution with city staff. Northland has asked the city for a compromise, if the new zoning is tacked on to the marina property, that will allow warehouses and retain limited restrictions on lot size and density. “We have a good relationship with the city and we will deal

The city’s land use bylaw has undergone a major overhaul and has already received first and second reading. Council wants Northland to provide a concrete plan that clearly details what they have planned for the marina site. Some members of council are opposed to “assembly of goods” or warehouses on the property. In 2005, a company owned by Nelson Skalbania, former owner of the Edmonton Oilers, Calgary Flames and B.C. Lions, sought rezoning to redevelop the Pitt Meadows Marina site on Reichenbach Road into a RV resort. Those plans were turfed after environmental groups and neighbouring property owners opposed the resort proposal, saying it would increase traffic and harm sensitive environmental areas. Under the current CS-1 zoning, Northland can build a range of facilities that include warehouse storage, fast food outlets, a funeral parlour, recreation facilities like a race track or bowling alley, or a car dealership. A public hearing on the proposed bylaw will be held at city hall on Sept. 20.

Trio of crashes snarls Sunday traffic Man volunteers to direct traffic following crash on Golden Ears Way Three car crashes in a span of 15 minutes snarled traffic in Maple Ridge on Sunday evening. The first crash between two cars at 5:15 p.m. on 203 Street at Golden Ears Way sent three people to hospital. While police and paramedics were dealing with the first call, a second crash happened on Harris Road at 122nd Avenue in Pitt Meadows. The third crash involved a truck towing a boat and a SUV and took place at 5:30 p.m. on Lougheed Highway at the entrance ramp to Golden Ears Way. It took more than a hour for police to clear the roads. Police said no one sustained life-threatening injuries, but the three incidents tied up ambulances and the Air Ambulance was also called in to transport a person to hospital. Ridge Meadows RCMP want to acknowledge and thank the man who volunteered more than an hour of his time to help control traffic on Lougheed Highway at the entrance ramp to Golden Ears Way.

Search teams looked for him overnight in hiking areas around the West Canyon Trail. The missing man was found by a RCMP helicopter around 2:30 p.m. Sunday. He was not inured.

The crash between the pickup truck and motorcycle happened just before 6 p.m. on Dewdney Trunk Road at 240th Street. Police found out the 23-yearold man behind the wheel of the pickup was prohibited from driving, so he was arrested at scene. Details of the crash are still being investigated, including whether the driver ran a red light.

Break-in attempt
Two teenage boys were robbed by a pair of men early Saturday in Pitt Meadows. The pair were walking on McMyn Road, near 191B Avenue, around 2:10 a.m., when they were confronted by two men. One of the men threatened the teens by telling them to give up their money. Police said the thieves got a small amount of cash before they walked away, but may have left the area in a blue BMW sedan. The teenage boys were not injured during the robbery.
A Maple Ridge man was arrested by police on Thursday after he allegedly broke into a store, but was caught inside by the owner. Ridge Meadows RCMP received a call about a break-in at Primerica on Harris Road in Pitt Meadows. Police responded to the call and found a man being held by the store owner and his son. Cpl. Alanna Dunlop said the man attempted to steal a computer from the business after it closed for the day. Paul Sweet has since been charged with theft and breakand-enter.

aple Ridge and Pitt Meadows are working on an updated transportation plan, including an update of the 1994 bikeways plan. The bikeways plan was based on the assumption that cyclists are safest if they behave as if they’re driving a car. In North America, separated bike paths were for decades considered to be more dangerous for cyclists than sharing the road with cars. Statistics seemed to show that cyclists were more likely to be involved in collisions with cars at intersections when using separated bike paths. More recent research, such as the UBC research program Cycling in Cities, shows that most cyclists prefer separation from car traffic, especially when traffic volumes and speeds are higher. It makes sense to compare statistics of cyclist fatalities and injuries in North America with those in the Netherlands, for example, where often cyclists use bike paths that separate them from car traffic. Such statistics show that separation doesn’t need to pose insurmountable problems, as long as the intersections are well designed. Per kilometer traveled, cyclists in North America are thee times more likely to be killed and 30 times more likely to have serious injuries than cyclists in the Netherlands, despite the fact that in the Netherlands they often use separate bike paths, and few cyclists wear helmets. In recent years, more and more cities are realizing that the North American approach has mostly appealed to young, fearless men. Groups that don’t like to take risks, such as women and seniors,
don’t feel that safe on our roads. In Maple Ridge, we are uniquely allowed to bike on the sidewalk. This is a practice frowned upon in countries where cycling Cycling Jackie Chow is popular, because pedestrians and cyclists don’t mix very well. The population in our town core is going to double in the next decade or so. The result? More cars and congestion on our roads, and more pedestrians and cyclists on the sidewalks, and likely cyclists being banned from the sidewalks. Having more people bike instead of drive is good for everyone. It leaves more space for those of us who need to drive, and those who don’t want to bike. If we want to entice more people to bike, we have to make it more appealing to them by providing a safe and comfortable space. That means that on roads with higher traffic volumes and speeds, cyclists need either bike lanes or separated bike paths. We only need to look at Vancouver, where the popularity of cycling is exploding, to see what happens when people are given a safe place to bike. In recent years, it’s been encouraging to see the addition of bike lanes in north-south direction in Maple Ridge. The biggest challenge, though, is to provide safe east-west routes. It’s in the interest of all residents of Maple Ridge to support and encourage
the district’s efforts to provide safe and convenient bike routes, so that not just the strong and fearless cyclists, but also children, seniors and women can get around safely on their bikes. Our Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition chapter has asked cyclists over the past few years to assist with assessment rides for the engineering departments of both municipalities, to evaluate the existing network, and to come up with ideas to improve and expand it. We have more than 20 volunteers, including several members of the Bicycle Advisory Committee, working hard on this. We are trying to complete our work by mid September. We are also involved in the upcoming GETI Fest in Memorial Peace Park on Sept. 24. GETI (Golden Ears Transition Initiative) aims to raise awareness about global warming, peak oil and sustainability issues. GETI Fest highlights: an artisan fair; bike decorating/rodeo; People in Motion Parade (anything non-fossil-fuel-powered is allowed – bikes, uni-cycles, walking, jogging, roller blading, pogo-sticking; live music, dinner and dance. We also provide free bike parking, and will have a bus bike rack for people to practice with. Everyone is invited. Volunteers are still needed.

C
rafting a joke takes skill. You need a premise, a perfectly timed delivery and a powerful punch line to round things off. Although Rafiq ‘Fiq’ Ahmed bombed during his first on-stage performance in 2009, the Maple Ridge comic didn’t give up. “I’ve always loved making people laugh,” says Ahmed. “I was never the class clown, but people just found me funny.” A year and half and several attempts later, Ahmed is now confident enough to play to a hometown crowd – the jocks, the prom queens and Haney Public House regulars who may remember him from high school. Actually, Ahmed confesses, the reason he’s organizing a hometown gig is because he’s tired of driving into Van-
couver. He managed to entice three other stand-up comics into the suburbs, only to find out none have a car, so he’ll be playing host as well as chauffeur. An “observational” comic, Ahmed’s most trusted source of material is wryly commenting on the people and things around, a la George Carlin and Louis C.K., who he cites as influences. “It’s kind of cathartic,” says Ahmed, who has a day job working at a Roger’s cell phone store. “My store’s going to be closing shortly, so then I will be as broke as every other comic.” Although he doesn’t stress about hecklers, Ahmed admits he’d like to make sure his first hometown gig draws laughs. He hopes to turn the comedy night into a monthly event at the Haney. “I want to impress them – a bit,” he says. “Luckily, the other guys are way funnier than I am. As long as everything goes well, we should be back with another great line-up in October and every month after that until Maple Ridge gets bored with laughing their faces off.”

Rayne Beveridge is still looking for musicians to build an orchestra for the musical Iolanthe and other symphonic works. The Ridge Meadows Community Orchestra will also be collaborating with the arts council on its new musical theatre program. The orchestra needs violin, viola, cello, bass, trumpet, trombone, French horn, saxophone, flute, clarinet, oboe and percussion. Interesting blend at Art in the Swamp Free annual event held at the “chicken farm”
Aging Gracefully Speaker Series
The tail-end of summer means it’s time for Art in the Swamp. The annual free event is held at Claire Louise Stephen and Rik Watson’s “chicken farm” property in east Maple Ridge, which was originally settled by Finnish pioneers. This year’s line-up of artists proves to be an interesting blend. • Jennie Christensen is a young, up-and-coming multifaceted artist. Besides painting, she also creates unique cards and is a virtuoso in fashion. • Stiff Gritty is an aspiring photographer who photographs landscapes and nudes. • Kara Grotek loves the physicality of art and many of her projects are “hands-on”. She is heavily influence by the natural world, many of her pieces combine elements of human anatomy and nature and include organic material such as animal bones or dried flowers. • Photographing Adrenaline is Cindy Hoflin’s new body of work which features scenes from concerts to riots. • Sandy Moulton graduated from the University of the Fraser Valley with a degree in

Shannon has been teaching voice for the last 6 years. She has received her bachelors of music as a voice major from the University of Victoria. She has also received her Orff level I (elementary music education). Shannon has had much experience with choral singing, musical theatre as well as studio recording vocal work. Currently she is singing with the funk cover band Double Overtime.
Aimee piano/theory/yamaha method Aimee has achieved her Grade 10 practical, and Teachers’ ARCT Elementary Pedagogy certificate through the Royal Conservatory of Music. Aimee has extensive experience as a Pianist/ Accompanist and a Musical and Choral Director. She also plays saxophone and clarinet with the Kwantlen Polytechnic University Wind Symphony and performs with the Kwantlen Polytechnic University Jazz Band. She is currently attending Kwantlen Polytechnic University under the Music Degree Program, and is excited to begin teaching this year—believing that “music is everybody’s possession.” Aimee teaches private piano and theory as well as, our newest addition, the Yamaha Method.

In addition to Steve’s teaching experience; he has been signed to 3 record labels and has done extensive touring. He is the guitar bassist/vocalist for the “Stimulators” a classic rock band. Steve has certificates in Audio engineering from the Columbia Academy as well as Radio broadcasting and commercial copy writing. He has studied voice training for radio broadcast and writing jingles. Steve welcomes students of all ages and levels.

Jade has been playing and studying classical piano since the age of 5 through the Royal Conservatory of Music. She has a grade 10 RCM piano certification and will achieve her ARCT’s Performer Diploma in June 2010. Jade has also studied and successfully completed all of the required ARCT theory, including history, harmony, counterpoint and analysis. She loves taking on musical challenges and hopes that her dedicated passion to piano will influence students. Although, classically trained, she also teaches popular and jazz music.

S
tress is a part of life – paying bills, work responsibilities, family expectations. But little do we realize how the way we deal with stress on a day-to-day basis can affect our health. Stress is our body’s primitive fight-or-flight mechanism – our basic, instinctive survival mechanism. Our body perceives a threat (think Tiger attack), and it liberates a great deal of energy in preparation for fighting or for running away. Your stress hormones, adrenaline and cortisol are quick on the scene to help make some swift and critical changes. This means your heart rate and blood pressure rise to get the energy to your limbs to have the juice to survive. It means your body ramps up it’s cholesterol production to be able to make more stress hormones, and to help re-grow cells that will die and get lost in your impending battle. It means that insulin receptors on your cells shut down, keeping blood sugar levels high so we can have energy to run or fight. It means our sense organs are in high alert so we can detect if there are any predators coming after us. Indeed, there is a great deal of intelligence to our bodies. We are programmed for survival. We are either using up our energy to protect ourselves, or grow. We can’t do both at the same time. This intelligence and wisdom can easily turn against us if we don’t get the message. That same wisdom, during a tiger attack, shuts off digestion, reproduction, and immu-
nity. That energy is better used for something more important – survival, protection. Those systems get shut down for the greater good. Whether there is an actual tiger chasing after you, or there is a fear of the tiger attack, your body reacts the same. So if you are feeling sluggish, depressed, anxious, you have a chronic illness like heart disease, diabetes, cancer, or your digestive system isn’t working properly, you have tension in your neck and back, sleeplessness, high blood pressure and high cholesterol – chances are your body is working quite normally. You would do your body and mind a favour by looking over your shoulder and checking if there is an actual tiger there. If not, then chances are you’re tricking your body into thinking there is one. Hectic schedules, deadlines, feelings of loss, traumas of the past we can’t seem to overcome are our tiger attacks of the modern day. Deal with this by becoming pro-active: • exercise burns off the adrenaline and cortisol we accumulate throughout the day. Make it a part of your life, not just for weight loss,but to save your life; • eating real foods – not chemically processed – is critical to give your body building blocks to re-create itself in a healthy way (fruits, veggies, nuts, seeds, organic meats); • take mental health time—hot baths, meditation, gratitude journal, alone time to switch your nervous system to allow you to rest and digest. By Tawnie Hayne One of the biggest obstacles we face in achieving our health and fitness goals is getting the mind and body working together to achieve them. The mind is a key player in our success. It might surprise you to hear that the most important part of getting fit is simply making up your mind to do it. But let’s be clear, thinking positive alone isn’t enough – you’ve got to take action. Propping up those positive thoughts with regular exercise and good nutrition will get you well on your way to reaching your fitness and wellness goals. But to keep you on track for success you need to spend some time defining your goals. Failing to define your goals is setting yourself up for nothing other than failure to reach them. Goal set the SMART way and you’ll harness the limitless power of your subconscious mind and you’ll get your body and mind working together to achieve them. Set Specific goals. Specific goals have a more powerful impact on your subconscious than general goals. Saying I want to lose body fat is a general goal. Saying I want to lose five per cent body fat is specific. Narrow your goal down and be as specific as possible. Set Measurable goals. If you are to succeed with your goals, you
must be able to measure them objectively. The scale is a useful tool, but it doesn’t always give you the big picture. There are lots of ways to measure your success. Use your energy level as an indicator, the way your clothes fit, or your rate of recovery from a workout. Reaching your ultimate goal involves measuring your progress along the way. Measure your progress regularly and use that information purely as feedback. Set Awesome goals Most personal trainers will encourage you to set attainable goals because it’s more likely that you’ll achieve them. Achieving a goal is good for your self-esteem. I believe that to make a goal worth achieving you have to set it high. Easily attainable goals aren’t motivating. Challenge yourself by setting a goal that scares you a little, so when you reach it you’ll really have something to celebrate. Set Realistic goals. Setting your goals high doesn’t mean they aren’t realistic. If you truly believe you can achieve your goal, then it’s a realistic one.

Knights squads notch wins staff reporter The Meadowridge Knights community football program registered plenty of additions to the wincolumn last weekend, with five of the seven local teams in action coming away with victories. The Knights bantam team travelled to Nanaimo and evened their record at 1-1 with a 41-0 victory over the Redmen. Brian Dongalen had touchdown runs of 90 and 56 yards and also hauled in a Jackson Murdoch pass for a 44-yard score. Murdoch, Hayden South and Kurtis Blaine scored the other Knight touchdowns. The defense was led by Tyrel Ogloff, Dylan Bridgman and Jake Rodgers. The junior bantam Knights, meanwhile, beat Chilliwack 3-1 in a tough defensive battle. The peewee Gold Knights beat the North Langley Bears 18-0. Cade Cote scored on two long touchdown runs while William Bartolo help hold off North Langley defenders on the on the offensive line. The defence was led by Blake Alford who made several tackles in the Bears’ backfield. Lukas Kolobara played a great game on both the offensive and defensive lines, recording several tackles and making many key blocks . The atom Gold Knights won their home opener 31-0 against North Langley. Kurtis Brown started the game off with a 68-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. From there, the offence piled up another 279 yards rushing as linemen James Harder, Evan Love and Mackenzie Gordon created gaping holes for the running backs. WHL Giants down Royals at Planet Ice $4,000 raised for local minor hockey associations by R o b e r t M a n g e l s d o r f staff reporter There was a carnival-like atmosphere at the Cam Neely Arena at Planet Ice as the Western Hockey League’s Vancouver Giants defeated the Victoria Royals 5-1 in exhibition action Saturday afternoon. More than 700 people filled the stands to watch the two top-tier junior teams. Marian Gardner, the assistant GM of Planet Ice, said WHL officials commented to her about
the lively reception the teams received. “For that many people to come out on a beautiful, sunny summer afternoon was really quite something,” said Gardner. The game was made possible by RG Properties, owners of the Planet Ice hockey arenas in Maple Ridge, Coquitlam, and Delta. RG Properties bought and moved the Chilliwack Bruins WHL franchise to Victoria earlier this year. Gardner said she hopes the exhibition game will become an annual tradition at the local rink. “We’re hoping we can host another game, thanks to the support we got from the community,” Gardner said.
Both teams had a number of rookies in the line-up as they used the exhibition game to put their prospects through their paces. The Vancouver Giants controlled the pace of the game from the outset, outshooting the Royals 11-9 while taking a 1-0 lead after the first period thanks to a goal by rookie left-winger Jacob Dunlop. Rookie centre Teal Burns had a pair of goals in the second period to put the Giants ahead by three. Steven Hodges put the Royals on the board 32 seconds into the final frame with a power play goal.
But despite out-shooting the Giants 15-4 in the third, the Royals continued to lose ground as Vancouver added a pair of goals to put the game out of reach. Jordan Martinook and Cain Franson – brother of NHLer Cody Franson – had the Giants’s third period goals. Proceeds from the event went to support local hockey, with more than $4,000 being raised for the Ridge Meadows Minor Hockey Association and the Meadow Ridge Female Minor Hockey Association.
Junior B. Flames register first preseason win over Port Moody by R o b e r t M a n g e l s d o r f staff reporter The Ridge Meadows Flames junior B hockey team notched its first win of the Pacific International Junior Hockey League preseason on Friday, downing the Port Moody Black Panthers 5-1 at
home at Planet Ice. However, the Black Panthers were able to earn the split, downing the Flames 4-1 as Ridge Meadows travelled to Port Moody Saturday night for its fourth exhibition game of the season. Despite a 1-3 record in the preseason so far, Flames coach Tavis Eaton said he is pleased by his
team’s progress so far. “It’s not about the wins and losses,” he said. “It’s about working with the guys and getting them ready. It’s all about the process. We’re still feeling guys out” Eaton says he has been impressed by the play of the many rookies on the team. In particular, he says the play

Midget Knights still looking for first win Knights from p31 They were led by Liam Mountford, Tyson Caughy and Brandon Goodridge, who recovered one of the turnovers. After missing the first game of the season, Tyson Phare had a great game with seven tackles and a fumble recovery on defence, as well as a 52-yard run for a touchdown on offence. The atom Blue Knights won their second game of the season, beating the Chilliwack White Giants 38â&#x20AC;&#x201C;0. Knights offensive linemen Carlos Reddekopp, Mitchell Alcinay and Ethan Holland paved the road to the end zone for the Meadowridge back-field, in-
cluding an impressive 35-yard touchdown run by Riley Rooney. Commanding control on the line of scrimmage were Lucas Deane and Aiden Fuchs while ends, Jaxon Smart and Riley Celino, shut down the Giants offence. The peewee Blue Knights lost 48-6 to Abbotsford White. Brandon Hunt, Jake Loftus and Kailesh Kumar made some good plays on offence. Mason Wakabayashi, Alex Rideout and Ryley Durante
tried hard on defence. The Meadowridge Knights midget team lost 21-3 to Nanaimo. The Knights led 3-0 at half-time after a 36-yard field goal from Nick Stoyeff but a few mental mistakes in the second half cost the Knights the game. Ross Allam and Rashaun Simonise ran the ball well on offence while Doug McNally led the defence. The midget Knights fall to 0-2 this season and face Cowichan this Saturday in their home opener.

Flames rookies showing promise Flames from p31 Eaton remains hopeful Matt Bissett and Danny Brandys will both return to the team for the 2011/12 season. Both players are currently trying out for junior A clubs. Bissett had 56 points in 36 games last season with the Vancouver North East Chiefs major midget hockey club, while Brandys had 72 points in 46 games with the Flames last year, good for second in the PIJHL. “My hunch is that they may be back ... but it’s all talk until they suit up,” said Eaton.
At goal, Eaton says he has been impressed by the play of rookie Jordan Eggert. “He has really surprised me,” Eaton said. “Jordan and [starting goaltender Tyler Klassen] get along really well, so I’m hoping they will really push each other.” The Flames play their final two games of the preseason this week against the Mission Icebreakers. The Flames travel to
Mission on Thursday, before returning home for their final exhibition game this Friday at Planet Ice. The Flames open the 2011/12 PIJHL regular season at home on Friday, Sept. 23, against the Grandview Steelers at Planet Ice. Game time is 7:30 p.m. “Grandview is a good team, they’re well-coached and they are competitive every season,” said Eaton. “It should be a good game.”
MJT golf comes to Pitt Korean BBQ
Pitt Meadows Golf Club in Pitt Meadows is hosting the non-profit Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) for the first time on Saturday, Sept. 24, and all junior golfers are invited to compete in the one-day tournament. The MJT’s Fall One Day Series at Pitt Meadows Golf Club (a second stop is at University Golf Club in Vancouver on October 15) allows newcomers to try the tour without membership fees, and pay the straight entry fee of $85 plus tax only. BROWN Laurence James Nov 24, 1923 ~ Aug 24, 2011 With celebration of his life, we announce the peaceful passing of Laurence J. Brown. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Irene (nee Frisk), and his children, Larry (Connie), Marian (Ken), and Carolyn (Lance), his 10 grandchildren, 7 great-grand children, and 5 sisters. He was predeceased by his son, Ronald, and grand-daughter, Kaalia. Leaving his legacy of Strength through Love, he welded a family who will always endure.
Jack passed away on Septemer 9, 2011 in Vancouver. He was the son of John Alexander and Gwendolyn Georgina McIver (nee Harrison) one of the pioneer families of Maple Ridge. Jack had a happy and optimistic disposition and brought music and stories into the lives of his family and friends. He always had a story to tell about a country music singer, a bit of local history or someone’s birthday. Jack led a full life and is survived by his sister Jean Seppala and his niece Lorna Seppala (Dave), Doug Seppala (Nicky), Robert Seppala (Diana) and many loving great nieces and nephews. He will be missed by all of us. The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff at Little Mountain Place for the kindness and understanding that they have shown over the years. A service will be held at Oakridge United Church, 305 West 41st Ave. at 2 p.m. on Friday, September 16, 2011. In Lieu of flowers donations can be made to the CNIB. Survived by his loving wife of 52 years Janice and children Laurie, Kim, Mike and Debbie with their spouses Ray, Mickey, Gloria and Bob. His grandchildren Cass, Christina, Colby, Amanda, Derek, Lyndsey, Sierra, Christopher and Brandon, as well as his great-grandchildren Halo, Jaxon, and Damon. Also survived by his sister Bev Emond and many friends that were more like family. Dad was an extremely hard worker. As a young man he used to work at the PNE with the horses cleaning stalls and excersizing the horses. Dad loved to fix up old cars and his old hot rods. Dad raced at Digby Speedway. He worked for ICBC as an insurance adjuster and later worked as a bodyman. Dad loved horses and old cars and was an amazing bodyman. He also loved to go fishing and loved to hunt with his old pal Dan Danyluk. He also loved the Canucks. Dad always considered his greatest achievement finding the love of his life, his wife Janice and raising his children to know the importance of family. He was so proud of them, watching them grow and have children of their own for a total of 9 grandchildren. Mom and Dad were blessed with 3 great-grandchildren who were lucky enough to get to know him even for a short time. Mom and Dad were also happy that all of their children found the loves of their lives who they have cherished and treated like they were their own. Dad always said that if you could count your true friends on one hand you were truly lucky and he was blessed with more than he could ever hope for. Anyone who ever met Dad instantly liked him because he was a truly loveable and extraordinary man.
We will always love you and hold you in our hearts forever. If you are reading this and you are lucky enough to still have your dad give him a hug and kiss and tell him you love him everyday.
PAQUIN Henry Gordon April 9, 1923 ~ Sept 8, 2011 Henry (Gordon) passed away peacefully on September 8, 2011 in Maple Ridge, BC at the age of 88. Gordon is predeceased by his loving wife Sheila and daughter Della. He was much loved by his surviving children Timothy and Rodney, five grandchildren, Curtis, Rochelle, Rachel, Michelle, and Sheila and his six great-grandchildren. His home, heart and happiness were always openly shared with his family and friends. We love and will miss our father, grandfather and greatgrandfather. He was always at the centre of our family and will always be at the centre of our fondest memories. Born in New Brunswick, her family travelled across Canada to settle in Burnaby when she was just a little girl. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Stan and her children Louise (Rick), Linda (Bill), Rick (Bonnie), Sally (Bill) and her 5 grand children: Alison, Patrick, Jessica, Amy and Hannah. She is predeceased by her youngest daughter Tammy in 1999. She will be greatly missed by all. A Celebration of her Life will be held on Sunday September 18th, 2011 at 1:00pm at “The Hall” 11892 Ponderosa Blvd, Pitt Meadows, B.C. V3Y 1Z3. Robert Symons died peacefully in his sleep on Sept 1st 2011, just one month short of his 80th birthday. Robert moved into St Michael’s Care Facility 7 years ago following a series of small strokes that left him in a wheel chair. His caregivers wondered whether this was the right decision for him at the time. It took only a short time to see that Robert found his home with the staff and the residents of St. Michael’s. He was well liked and well cared for. Robert became popular in this care facility with both staff and families of the other residents, who often expressed their fondness for Robert. Robert could never offend a single person and he was genuinely happy. He loved so much and touched many lives. Robert’s favourite activities were socializing over a coffee, snoozing in the sunshine, and playing his favourite sport, checkers. All that dared challenge him understood how sharp he could be!
Robert’s life has been a gift to all of us and we will miss him dearly. Good bye friend. We would like to thank the staff of St Michael’s Care Facility and especially to June whose care for Robert has been exceptional. A Celebration of Robert’s life will be held Saturday September 17th at 1:00pm in the MAPLE RIDGE FUNERAL CHAPEL (OSBORN’S), 11969 - 216th Street Maple Ridge. Rev. David Logan Officiating.
