Sheltered work program saved Community Living extends funding a year for jobs at recycling depot for developmentally disabled adults by Phi l M elnyc h u k staff reporter The 29 developmentally disabled workers will stay on the job at the Ridge Meadows Recycling Depot after restoration of the supported work program. Community Living B.C. agreed to restore the $270,000 for the program for another year, MLA Marc Dalton said Monday. On top of that, Social Development Minister Harry Bloy has told Community Living to call the families affected and apologize. Dalton said Community Living is a Crown corporation and acts independently, “but it was handled poorly. “There was a real problem if it was going to be cancelled Oct. 1.” Community Living B.C. recently told the recycling society it wasn’t renewing its contract

and that the part-time jobs would end Sept. 30. But the resulting furore led to the reversal, with CLBC renewing the contract following a meeting with Dalton the recycling society Monday. That meeting also addressed Community Living’s concerns about employment standards. Dalton said he was encouraged after hearing last week that Community Living gave a threemonth extension, allowing the program to continue to Dec. 30. While the contract is renewed every year, “I would anticipate this would be OK for a while to come. See Jobs, p10

Man facing child porn charges was football equipment manager by M o n i s h a M a r t i n s staff reporter A man recently charged with possessing child pornography volunteered with a local minor football club until at least last year, despite being flagged in a police investigation three years prior. Douglas James McNally is listed as a coach for the Meadowridge Knights flag football team for 2010 on the club’s website. The 67-year-old currently faces one count each of importing or

distributing child porn and possessing child pornography. The accusations have yet to be proven in court. A parent whose son plays for one of the Knights’ teams was disturbed to learn that McNally had first appeared on the radar of Ridge Meadows RCMP four years, but still continued to volunteer with the Maple Ridge-based football club until 2010. “I am sickened by this,” said the mother, who requested anonymity. Solaris owners protest no-pets bylaw Some face fines as much as $200 a month by M o n i s h a M a r t i n s staff reporter Jackie Hahn’s three-year-old Shih Tzu is named Skipper, for her husband who used to captain tugboats. When the 73-year-old moved to the Solaris development in Pitt Meadows in June to be closer to family, there was no question - Skipper was coming along. “He’s my companion,” says Hahn, who likes to walk Skipper at least three times a day. “There’s no way I would give him up.” Skipper, however, isn’t welcome in the new highrise complex, next to city hall. Hahn and almost a dozen other dog owners in both towers are now facing fines of $200 a month as the strata council enforces a “no pet” bylaw that’s pitting neighbours against each other. Hahn claims she was told by the sales agent for Solaris Royal LePage Brookside Realty the “no pet” policy was a mistake that would be fixed once she moved in. “I took their word at good faith,” said Hahn, who admits she signed the disclosure statements without reading through every page of the inch-thick binder. Frank Seisling signed his documents with his dog Maggie on his lap. He too alleges realtors James Isherwood and Chad August assured him that his Pomeranian-Shih Tzu cross could move into Solaris with him. “They both knew I had a dog,” said Seisling. The first letters with accompanying fines were sent to owners in July and since all have been trying to get the pet issue addressed. The owners facing fines spoke at a strata meeting, contacted the de-

The strata even hired a lawyer, for $800, who assured council they could continue enforcing the “no pet” bylaw, but demanded – in a tersely worded letter – that the marketing team at Royal LePage Brookside Realty “cease making any further misrepresentation to prospective purchasers at Solaris regarding the ability of owners to keep pets within their strata lots or anywhere else at Solaris.” On Sunday, frustrated with no action, the prospects of losing their pets and compounding fines, the owners picketed the sales office and vow to continue their protest until a solution

is found. Christine Chaisson walked away from a purchase when she found out about the “no pet” bylaw, but went through with it after she was told the bylaw was a mistake that was going to be rectified. “We’ve all been misled,” said Chaisson, who moved to Pitt Meadows from New Brunswick with a Labrador she has owned for three years. The owners have now filed complaints against the realtors involved. RG Properties referred all calls about the pet bylaw back to the strata and sales agent. Crosby Property Management, the strata’s agent, confirmed Solaris will continue to enforce its bylaws, which were registered in August 2010, before anyone moved into the apart-

ments. Royal LePage Brookside Realty pointed out that all the owners involved signed disclosure statements that included information on Solaris’ no pet policy, but refused to comment further on the owners’ allegations. Those signatures leave the owners with little defence. “If the bylaw is filed, I hate to say it, but ignorance of the law is no excuse,” said Tony Gioventu, executive director of the Condominium Home Owners Association of B.C. Gioventu recommends the group get 20 per cent of the owners to sign a petition demanding a special general meeting to repeal the “no pet” bylaw. “It’s the easiest way because maybe there are enough people to do it.”

TransLink supports West Coast Express expansion TransLink’s top brass supports expansion of West Coast Express service – some day. “It’s needed,” CEO Ian Jarvis said Wednesday at a chamber of commerce luncheon in Maple Ridge. If energy costs double or triple, people won’t be able to afford to commute and they’ll be wondering why the service wasn’t provided earlier, he said. Even if the ridership isn’t at ideal levels, the service could still be expanded beyond the current five

rush-hour trains to assure future capacity, added TransLink’s board chair Nancy Olewiler. TransLink could be criticized for running a service that doesn’t have enough ridership, “but if we don’t get it in now, and we never get it in, we’ll never have the opportunity to have that efficient service.” “We’ll be relegated to serving people by other means. “If we don’t build it now, we may never be able to.” The contract with CP Rail for using the mainline from Mission to Vancouver and operating the trains expires in 2015, so Trans-

Link has started a strategic study of the 16-year-old commuter rail service, including the possible effects on ridership of the Evergreen Line SkyTrain, if that’s built in Coquitlam. But he wouldn’t say how much money has been allocated for that study. Jarvis said negotiating with CP Rail is a “delicate process,” but it will be easier with new federal legislation that requires commuter rail to be treated more fairly when allocating track time. TransLink is on a consulting tour as it seeks approval for its “Moving Forward” supplemental spend-

ing plan that will pay for its share of the $1.2-billion Evergreen Line, upgrading of five SkyTrain stations and increasing bus service in Surrey, Richmond, North Vancouver, White Rock and Langley. No improvements are listed for Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. A two-cent-a-litre hike in the gasoline tax next April has tentative approval, while other revenue sources, such as a vehicle levy or property taxes, remain undecided. Jarvis also said smaller tolls could be levied on the Lions Gate, Ironworkers Memorial bridges and Sea to Sky Highway. See WCE, p4

Several old buildings have been bulldozed down and Northumberland Court is soon to go. Now some on Maple Ridge council are worried it could have another at the foot of 224th Street, the burned-out shell of what used to be Don Cherry’s Sports Grill. The building went up in flames Aug. 30, and while the fire department has finished its investigation, police and the insurance company are continuing theirs. Since then, it’s already being broken into twice, fire chief Dane Spence told council. “It’s already become problematic in its current state. “It’s iffy if this building can be saved or not.” While the fire department visits the site once a day and construction crews use the parking lot during work hours, there is no 24-hour, on-site security. Coun. Mike Morden wondered how much that was costing the municipality and didn’t want to wait for a year and have the property deteriorate. Meanwhile, a new condo is being built nearby, increasing the risk and it would be cheaper to have private security at the building, Morden said. “I’m extremely concerned about the risk there.” Coun. Craig Speirs wanted to know if bylaw infractions must occur before any enforcement action took place and was told by Spence, that is the case. “As the risk increases, our response increases.” Mayor Ernie Daykin added that he knew of a similar case that dragged on for years. Meanwhile, removal of asbestos and hazardous material from Northumberland Court, formerly known as the ghetto, on Fraser Street, has been completed in one of four buildings and work has started on the second. The attitude has changed.” Meanwhile, the Evergreen Line is awaiting resolution of the funding formula that TransLink will use to pay for its $400-million share of the project. If the mayor’s council approves that, then the provincial government can issue a request for proposals for bids on the project. A Maple Ridge chiropractor has stepped forward to put his name into the race for seat on council, Nov. 19. Robert Masse says he’s got the time, energy and business experience for the job. Masse says that growth of Maple Ridge’s suburbs has not been matched by growth in the retail and business sectors. “As our population has grown, we have become more and more a bedroom community of Vancouver with most people having to commute each day to find jobs that allow them to afford home ownership in Maple Ridge. “I would like to see our city hall foster an environment conducive to the creation of higher paying jobs in the technical and light industrial sectors,” he said in a news release. In the same vein, Masse says thousands of people leave Maple Ridge every day because there is not enough shopping. That has a higher environmental impact than developing shopping closer to home, he points out. “If we provide a combination of more good jobs, through encouraging business growth and we provide the type of shopping people are leaving Maple Ridge for, we will build a more livable,

prosperous and environmentally responsible community.” The reason Maple Ridge’s taxes are so high is because of a lack of commercial and industrial base, he adds. The District of Masse Maple Ridge also should reconsider its household garbage pickup system and hire a single contractor and provide the service like every other city in the Lower Mainland, he says. Presently three different companies do this, leading to more air pollution as well as people dumping garbage in ditches and rat infestations caused by people holding on to their garbage. He pointed out that in Pitt Meadows people pay $235 a year for garbage pickup and recycling while he pays a total of $351 for garbage pickup and the district’s recycling charge. Masse has lived in Maple Ridge since 1981 and has served on the Downtown Maple Ridge Business Improvement Association, Ducks Unlimited and the B.C. Chiropractic Association. He was also race director for the Vistas Run from 2005 to 2009 which raised “significant funds” for the Ridge Meadows Hospice.

times have grown only slightly, which means the service is coping. Olewiler noted TransLink use is up by six per cent already this year, compared to 2010, which was “off the charts” because of the Winter Olympics. She said the public is opting for transit as a way to reduce personal budgets. One of TransLink’s goals is to have half of all commuting trips be by other than by automobile by 2040. It points out the Expo and Millennium SkyTrain lines are the most efficient and low-cost light rail operations in North America. However, TransLink infrastructure is also aging. The Expo Line is 25 years old, Jarvis pointed out. Transit users pay about 52 per cent of transit operating costs, he added.

Ward won’t run again for school board

There will be one more vacant seat up for grabs in the upcoming Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Board of Education election as Pitt Meadows trustee Kathie Ward has opted not to run for reelection. Ward made her announcement on Monday, saying she instead plans to spend more time with her family and focussing on her job working for an environmental testing company. “This hasn’t been an easy decision,” she said. “But the last

Bargain quietly Teachers’ contract bargaining should not be a spectator sport with blood-thirsty zealots cheering on their combatants like teens at an afterschool fist fight. There are more adult ways to conduct negotiations than fear mongering, rabble rousing and putdowns. With school now underway, both sides in the B.C. public school teachers dispute should loudly pronounce their intentions to bargain in good faith, then duck under the cover of silence until there’s something worthwhile to report — like a settlement. The B.C. Teachers’ Federation and the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association have an opportunity to create a teachable moment for thousands of B.C. students by engaging in respectful negotiations. No doubt there are extreme challenges facing both sides in this dispute because the teachers are expected to live within the same “zero net” deal accepted by other public sector unions. With an arbitrator ruling that issues traditionally discussed at the provincial table should remain there, and class size and composition regulations left out of the discussion for now (the province has until next April to contemplate the implications of a Supreme Court ruling that struck down class size and composition regulations), both sides in the dispute have a very narrow range of concerns to deal with. As frustrating as it is for teachers to not be able to deal with their most pressing issues — parity with other provinces on wages and benefits, class size and composition — and with a provincial election still a long way off, the road is clear for some hard bargaining on the narrow range of contract items still open for discussion. One option is for both sides to bear down on a few key non-monetary items to obtain a shortterm deal or stall for a year or more until the way is clear for a possible return to bargaining of class size and composition, wages and benefits. Regardless, it should be understood by all that teachers have the legal right to bargain (as upheld by the courts) and complaints of unreasonable concessions or unrealistic demands are typical opening bargaining positions. With these volleys out of the way, it’s time for some serious bargaining. But, please, let’s do it quietly. – Black Press

B.C. imports American-style politics VICTORIA – The Americanization of Canadian and B.C. politics is gathering speed now that legislated four-year terms are finally settling in at the federal and provincial level. Scheduled elections are an important reform, but the downside is that they seem B.C. Views to lead inexorably to Tom Fletcher constant campaigning. The latest example is the B.C. Liberal Party’s website and radio campaign directed at upstart B.C. Conservative leader John Cummins. “Strange days indeed,” NDP leader Adrian Dix mused on his Facebook page. “The Liberals, after a week of nasty attacks on the NDP, launched an anti-John Cummins website. Absent a policy agenda, the Liberals seem to want to blame others for their problems. This too will backfire as Ms. Clark is again misreading the public mood. People are demanding substance in politics these days, not photo ops and negative attacks.” I see nothing strange in Dix rushing to the defence of Cummins, who represents the NDP’s best hope for a move into the legislature’s west wing. It is a bit odd for Dix to accuse others of lacking policy, as he leads a party that has been distinguished by little other than negative political tactics since its near-death experience in 2001. This is almost as strange as the B.C. Liberals damning Cummins as a politi-

cian who “says one thing and does another.” Yeah, that can really come back to bite you. There hasn’t been much of an anti-Dix effort yet, but you can be sure there is one sitting on the shelf, prepared for Clark’s recently-abandoned fall election plan. The “nasty attacks” Dix complained about were focused on his federal party’s sudden preference for Quebec seats in the House of Commons, and sniping about which Premier Clark hired more political staff – Christy or Glen? And it was the NDP who started the negative cycle with their own TV ad, featuring “Campbell Crunch” and “Christy Crunch” cereals, both “loaded with HST.” (I can put to rest the ghastly rumour that the B.C. Liberal war room will soon unleash a gang of angry, unemployed HST stick-men.) The U.S. tactic of going negative early, to define your rivals before they can define themselves, has worked spectacularly for Stephen Harper’s Conservatives. They scorched federal Liberal leaders Stéphane Dion and Michael Ignatieff, and public distaste for these methods does not seem to have hurt them. The anti-Cummins campaign has a similar style, and there are indications that it may have been produced in Toronto. The website, canttrustcummins.ca, uses a bug-eyed photo of the former fisherman-MP that makes him look like a ray gun-wielding alien from the movie Mars Attacks. In fact our whole political scene is starting to look like a rerun of a bad 1990s movie.

It was Reform B.C. that rose from the ashes of Social Credit, and inspired a desperate Gordon Campbell to sing country music and take a hard line on aboriginal relations, to stitch the ruptured right back together. Cummins defined himself as a ReformAlliance-Conservative MP by railing against treaties, and that continues to be the core of his thin policy book. His other two main ideas are also pure rural populism. He vows to scrap the carbon tax and suggests that municipalities should cut their costs to fund transit.

Voters will have a better idea by the end of this week if Clark’s plan for “defending and creating jobs” is really new policy, or merely more photo ops. Voters will have a better idea by the end of this week if Clark’s plan for “defending and creating jobs” is really new policy, or merely more photo ops. B.C. has had its first taste of Californiastyle tax revolt. Now we have two years ahead that will be dominated by relentlessly negative, continuous campaigning. At ‘the heart’ of RM recycling

chat@mapleridgenews.com Unanswered questions From: left lougheed, posted on mapleridgenews.com. Re: Real worth (News Views, Sept. 16). There has been very little said about the “new model.” There would apparently be one person available to find jobs for the people in the program. And these jobs would need to be in the private sector. The piece that is missing is that there is no further support to help folks keep these jobs year after year. So many questions are raised: 1. Will minimum wage jobs in fast food joints, etc. really be safe for these individuals? 2. Will employers with no experience or training in managing people with disabilities really be understanding and supportive? 3. Who is pocketing the $10,000 per patron that the current program costs? Is this money going to private consultants or employment agencies? Is this really a privatization scheme in disguise? 4. What exactly are the outcomes CLBC is looking for? Cost savings? Quality of experience? Long-term opportunities? Social experience? 5. If these 29 people find jobs elsewhere and lose them in three months, will anyone realize it? Is the real objective of government to disperse these individuals so the service cuts in future will not be realized?

EDITOR, THE NEWS:

Re: Disabled program in doubt (The News, Sept. 16). I am the former executive director of Ridge Meadows Recycling Society, now retired. I worked at RMRS from 1982 on and was involved as the society formed the supported work program. Rather than the ‘old model,’ you describe, I believe this program is a new way of creating work for people with developmental disabilities in the real world. The reason so many other work programs stopped having people with developmental disabilities was because of the Employment Standards edict in 1995 that said, ‘If it looks like work, people must be paid minimum wage.’ Clearly, in a business setting, this could not be justified because most of these individuals could not work fast enough to earn minimum wage. Although, on the surface, this edict seemed caring and fair, it ended many wonderful work programs. The replacement for these

Letters welcome Letters to the editor should be exclusive to The News and address topics of interest to residents of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. work programs was day programs that are many times more expensive and exclude anything that looks like work. The truth is, most people get a lot of satisfaction from their job and this is no different for people with developmental disabilities. At RMRS, there is a strong commitment to jobs for people with developmental disabilities. The work is easy to learn and repetitive, so perfectly matched for people with developmental disabilities. The whole community recognized the benefit of these jobs being done by people with developmental disabilities. The community thought that the loss of this work site would be harmful and wrong. The organization found a way to absorb administration costs and to provide for other necessary funding. This means that on the RMRS job site, every person is receiving at least minimum wage. It is, therefore, incorrect to state that these employees are not being properly com-

pensated. Besides being perfect work (the work is easy to learn and perform), it differs from the sheltered workshop by being work done in the public. At RMRS, the program employees work alongside staff, who are mostly young and who are longshoremen – not your typical community living staffers. This program is housed on a light industrial work site with other workers who all become friends and co-workers with people who have a variety of skills and abilities. When possible, program workers are promoted to jobs in the regular RMRS workforce, something made possible by the integrated nature of the work site. Management and supervisors all attend Douglas College Community Living training to ensure they understand this field. All workers are given training to help them understand people who are different from themselves. This integration is real and ensures that everyone has a better understanding of each other and it is the society’s

belief that this integration enriches all our lives. Just to be clear, recycling will continue without the supported work program, but a rare opportunity to combine real work for real wages in the community will be lost. The supported work program has been called ‘the heart’ of the recycling program. Without a doubt, the society has a strong environmental mandate, but it is the management and community board members who see it as a perfect vehicle to address one of our community’s social needs, as well. The loss to the community would be so much more than the recycling work accomplished. I ask that you reconsider your position on ending this program at Ridge Meadows Recycling Society at the end of the year. This is the type of program that should be duplicated throughout B.C. to ensure that there are jobs for people with developmental disabilities. KELLI SPEIRS MAPLE RIDGE

A third person has been charged with the 2008 murders of Lisa Dudley and Guthrie McKay of Mission. Bruce Main, 64, of Maple Ridge joins co-accused Jack Douglas Woodruff, 52, of Surrey and Justin Andrew MacKinnon, 25, of no ďŹ xed address in two counts each of ďŹ rst-degree murder. Main made his ďŹ rst appearance Monday in Abbotsford provincial court and is next scheduled for this Thursday, Sept. 22 – exactly three years since the murders. He has no previous criminal record in B.C., according to the provincial court database.

Guthrie McKay and Lisa Dudley were murder three years ago. Sgt. Jennifer Pound, spokesperson for the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, said

police are releasing few details about Main’s arrest or background, other than to conďŹ rm his charges. “We’re not speaking to the connection [among the three accused],â€? she said. Pound said police are continuing their investigation. Dudley, 37, and her boyfriend McKay, 33, were found by a neighbour on Sept. 22, 2008 in the 31000 block of Greenwood Drive in Mission four days after a 911 call was received that several shots had been ďŹ red in the area. McKay was pronounced dead on the scene. Dudley was in severe medical distress and died en route to hospital. Woodruff was charged in May, followed by MacKinnon in June. A trial date has not yet been set, but the preliminary inquiry is scheduled to begin June 5 in Abbotsford.

proved charges against him. Although McNally was the subject of an investigation in 2007, a police spokesperson said that information may have not been revealed on a criminal record check because there were no charges laid and the matter never went to court. The Meadow Ridge Knights assure players and parents that McNally is no longer involved with the football club. “This news is most disappointing to the club and we are deeply concerned,” said club president Bruce Rodgers. “It is our prac-

tice to have criminal history checks done on all volunteers and history checks, in this case, did not reveal anything. The safety and well being of our players is our top priority.” McNally has since been released on bail, but is bound by conditions that include no contact with anyone younger than 16. He must also stay away from parks, daycares, swimming pools or anywhere children may be present. He is not allowed to access the Internet except for work, banking and to communicate with family.

Support coordinator position maintained Jobs from front “I really hope that CLBC can learn something from this, because this is a provincial thing. We need to make sure there’s better communication. We need that from CLBC.” He added that’s been an ongoing concern he has with families that are funded by Community Living. Government has increased Community Living funding annually since its inception in 2005, but Community Living is reallocating its funds on a provincial basis, Dalton added. However, the supported work program is a “really good program. It’s a proven success. It’s been very beneficial.” Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin was glad to hear of the deal and credited the reversal to a collective effort. Council led the way last week with a hardhitting letter to Social Development Minister Harry Bloy, but that likely hasn’t been sent yet. “It’s another ex-

where McNally lived and those details were forwarded to Ridge Meadows RCMP. But local police were unable to act on the information “due to delays” and closed the file. A CD containing images of child abuse related to the file was also destroyed. In 2011, however, police received another cyber tip and acted on it quickly. Police were granted a search warrant in June to search McNally’s house, where a computer, laptop, cell phone and cameras were seized. In August, Crown ap-

I am wondering where’s the criminal record check?” In a search warrant application, police revealed that McNally was flagged in 2007 by Canada’s National Child Exploitation Coordination Centre, which passed the information to the RCMP’s Integrated Child Exploitation Unit (ICE). compliance with Employment Standards is maintained,” the statement said. “We look forward to continuing to work together to provide more opportunities for inclusive employment in the Maple Ridge community.” That could mean the program could change, such as the practice of employees waiting, unpaid, because of transportation issues, for their shift to start. All employees make the $8.75 an hour minimum wage for their shifts. The number of people in the program

could also decrease if jobs are found elsewhere. “We’re working together with them to find options for people, but we believe in our program,” added executive-director Kim Day. It’s now clear to Community Living that Maple Ridge and the recycling society “really support the model that we have.” Community Living also reversed its decision to chop $61,000 in yearly funding to Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Community Services. That pays for a support coordinator who helps 28 developmentally disabled people in volunteer jobs with groups such as the Salvation Army, Friends in Need Food Bank or Adopt-A-Block. The contract for that has been extended a year. “The families have all been told,” said Kristy Rogge, director of programs and services. “People are so happy and so excited.” Community services will have a later meeting with Community Living B.C.

MR man, 21, caught with B&E tools A 21-year-old Maple Ridge man found with a backpack full of breakand-enter tools faces charges for breaching bail conditions. A Ridge Meadows Mountie spotted the man and a friend riding bicycles early Monday in the 12400-block of 256th Street. Neither was wearing a helmet. A search revealed that one man was carrying a number of tools which could be used to break into homes or businesses. The officer also learned that the man had recently been before the courts on charges of stealing wire from the same neighbourhood and was bound by bail conditions that prohibited him from being in possession of any tools. The man was arrested and held for a court appearance later in the day.

were enforcing seat belt and distracted driving rules on the Haney Bypass when the 30-yearold was spotted using a cellphone. Cpl. Alanna Dunlop said when a police officer approached the Mercedes SUV he noticed an odour of marijuana coming from the vehicle. Police allege cocaine, heroin, and marijuana, along with other items that are consistent with drug trafficking were seized from the car following a subsequent search. The man, who is known to Ridge Meadows RCMP, has a courtordered condition that prohibits him from possessing a cell phone. Police arrested the man for breaching the condition and he was held over the weekend for a court appearance on Monday.

Drugs found

Car crash

A Maple Ridge man was arrested Friday after police found him in possession of illegal drugs during a traffic enforcement blitz. Ridge Meadows RCMP

Three people, including a child, were sent to hospital following a twovehicle crash in Maple Ridge Friday afternoon. It occurred at 3:45 p.m. on 228th Street at Reid

Avenue. Police said a car travelling north collided with a SUV, causing the latter to flip onto its side. An air ambulance was called in by members of the B.C. Ambulance Service, and two men who were driving the vehicles were airlifted to hospital, while a young girl was taken by ambulance to Ridge Meadows Hospital. Cpl. Alanna Dunlop said their injuries appear to be non-life threatening. Speed is being investigated as a factor in the crash.

Vending machine Ridge Meadows RCMP are looking for the owner of a vending machine that was dumped near a Maple Ridge mall on Thursday. The yellow, black and red vending machine, which sells various stickers, was found near the Shoppers Drug Mart in Westgate Centre on Lougheed Highway at 203rd Street. Police believe the vending machine was

stolen and disposed of at the location after thieves pried it open.

Assault charges Police are recommending a charge of assault and uttering threats against a man who got into a tiff with a woman over a parking spot. Police allege the confrontation took place around 9 a.m. Thursday after the woman noticed a car she felt was parked illegally in Cottonwood subdivision. The woman was taking a photograph of the car when the owner approached her. Cpl. Alanna Dunlop said the 46-year-old man allegedly hit the woman’s hand, knocking the cell phone out of it, and stated he would harm her. The woman was not injured in the confrontation and the cell phone was not damaged. The man was taken to the Ridge Meadows RCMP detachment where he was released on a promise to appear in court in October.

Golden Ears Bridge noise reduce, but Pitt Meadows residents not satisfied by M o n i s h a M a r t i n s staff reporter Pitt Meadows residents concerned about noise and drainage issues associated with the Golden Ears Bridge are optimistic that TransLink will find solutions to their complaints. A newly formed community action group, which met for the first time last week, has thrown out several fixes which the provincial transportation authority has promised to investigate. They include a parabolic, or cone-shaped device that can be installed on a wall to deflect the sound of trucks and cars away from the neighbourhood. “I think they are honestly trying to fix the problems that are within their budget and within

their control,” said Bill Collins, a resident of Wildwood Crescent who was chosen as chair for the group’s next meeting. Collins will be providing TransLink a copy of a recording he made earlier this year when the bridge was shut down due to a suicide attempt, leading the “croaking” and “thumps” to disappear for several hours. “That day was amazing. After a year or six months of having all this noise, all of a sudden we were back to the quiet we had before,” said Collins. Testing done by TransLink has found that the cloth-like substance being inserted in between the bridge’s expansion joints has reduced the din from approximately 55 decibels to about 46. Most of the work on the

bridge deck is complete. Vincent Gonsalves, a community relations coordinator with TransLink, said the noise reductions exceed original expectations and have gone over and above provincial standards. Many residents still want TransLink to install sinus-plates over the expansion joints – an expensive fix that Translink is not open to. “In talking to the manufacture of the sinus plates, another option came up,” Gonsalves said, referring to the “geotextile” material that is currently being inserted in between the joints. “We felt that it was a better option than the sinus plates.” Although TransLink has no money set aside for specific solutions that the action group comes

up with, there is cash set aside for maintenance that can be diverted towards it. TransLink has committed to meet with the residents for the next six month, or longer if needed. Pitt Coun. Bruce Bell, who attended the resident group’s first meeting along with councillors Doug Bing, Tracy Miyashita and Deb Walters, liked some of the solutions presented. “The folks did get to vent,” said Bell. “But once it got going, some good ideas came out of it. Let’s give it a chance. But ultimately, the proof is in the pudding.”

• The next meeting of the new Pitt Meadows community action group is set for Oct. 26.

Much more than flesh and blood A former competitive bodybuilder, Jason Gallant chronicles his search for true happiness in a new book by M o n i s h a M a r t i n s staff reporter

A

s a child, Jason Gallant was in awe of kung fu masters, the folks who could perform impossible feats. These were people who could manipulate energy, seemingly fly across rooms and burst forth with supernatural strength. To Gallant, those tales were fantasy, cast as fiction. “I was one of those guys who thought if I haven’t seen it, then I don’t believe it,” he says. You may know Gallant from his competitive natural bodybuilding days or his time spent as a bouncer at a Maple Ridge night club. Gallant admits he was the consummate tough guy with “scars on his knuckles” to prove it. Back then, spirituality and things of the mind were things he’d dismissed as hippy fluff. “I went up many different buildings trying to find my happiness and each time I’d fall down and hit the bricks,” says Gallant, who hit the ground hard around five years ago, which sunk him into deep depression. Unemployed, single and battling a shoulder injury, it was the first time in years that Gallant couldn’t pump iron.

“Spirituality is not meant to disconnect you from reality.”

Colleen Flanagan/THE NEWS

Jason Gallant chronicles his journey to find his “true self” in his book Awakening With Arathi Ma.

Jason Gallant, author “ Exercise was my medication,” he says. “I always had to have an overwhelming high. A victory.” Without a goal, Gallant was in limbo, hiding in his parents’ house and trying to practice shamanic exercises, just for kicks, which had him pose like different animals. He picked up the book on shamanic exercises out of curiosity, he explains. “Not because I thought it would help my depression. I thought it would make life more interesting.” Although those exercises helped, Gallant was soon back in the same rut, depressed, lonely and pessimistic about his future. That’s when Gallant’s twin brother introduced him to Arathi Ma, an energy healer who had an ability to change people’s emotional state. Through a series of “miracles”, Arathi Ma showed Gallant

that happiness was possible, that he was more than the physical body he worked so hard to perfect. “Somehow we believe in life that if we sacrifice our own pleasure and happiness we can make others be happy, but we’re not fooling anybody,” says Gallant. “All you do is drag them into your unhappiness. There’s another way to live and find happiness instead of going out and getting a bigger car, job or new relationship.” Gallant chronicles his search for his “true self” in a selfpublished book titled Awakening With Arathi Ma. A journey that’s seen him investigate spirituality in all its forms, including cleansing by consuming ayahuasca, a psychoactive plant, illegal in North America, traditionally used by shamans in Ecuador, Bolivia and Peru. “It’s only illegal because it’s misunderstood and western culture doesn’t understand it,” says Gallant. The “cleansing” sessions were life changing and his journey eventually led him into a relationship with Arathi Ma.

“This spiritual work is real,” says Gallant. “I have never done drugs. I’ve never been a whack job. When I started this spiritual work, things started to happen. It took time. I started to see and experience what I had never experienced before.” For Gallant, sharing the tale of his journey just seemed natural, especially when people around him noticed something different and asked if they could try it. Telling one story just wouldn’t do his journey justice, that’s also why he wrote the book. “You become more self-less. Automatically you move outwards to help other people,” he says. “Spirituality is not meant to disconnect you from reality, it’s actually meant to make you more in touch with it.” • Jason Gallant will be signing copies of his new book Awakening with Arathi Ma on Saturday, Sept. 24 at Seeds of Life, 22348 Selkirk Ave. in Maple Ridge. His book can be purchased online at www.seedsoflife.ca.

“The nice thing about this fullface mask, cartoonesque form is it lets you do more whimsical imaginative things,” says Braidwood, who grew up in Maple Ridge but now lives in Portland, Oregon. “That is harder to do with more straight theatre. We can take Death and make him a real character. We can kind of personify him and show something more removed from our normal reality. It let’s us in – in a different way.” Wonderheads will now tour Grim & Fischer in the U.S., but will be back in Vancouver to play at the Clutch in East Vancouver. This Is Cancer, The Progres-

sive Polygamists, Big Shot, Little Orange Man and Peter ‘n’ Chris were the other Pick Of the Fringe winners. As first-timers on the Fringe Festival circuit, Kate Braidwood and Andrew Phoenix of Wonderheads couldn’t have wished for a better reception. After winning best of the Fringe accolades in Calgary, Edmonton and Victoria, the praise for their production Grim & Fischer hasn’t stopped. “We had no idea it would do so well,” says Braidwood, thrilled that Grim & Fischer was one of six shows chosen as Pick of the Fringe in Vancouver on Sunday. Grim & Fischer is a deathly comedy with heart and absurd humour, and shows what it is to know that death’s hand is close. The show is performed in fullface mask, a unique form that mixes European larval mask traditions with full-face character styles resulting in a form unlike any other seen on North American stages. Audiences have described the experience as watching a living cartoon – the whimsy and imagination of Pixar or Jim Henson in theatrical form. Braidwood used her experience with watching grandparents age for the story behind Grim & Fischer.

Flames finish preseason at 3-3 by R o b e r t M a n g e l s d o r f staff reporter

Gary Ahuja/THE NEWS

Pitt Meadows junior varsity quarterback Jacob Gowler looks to pass against the Langley Saints on Friday afternoon.

Senior Marauders topple Saints The Pitt Meadows Marauders senior football team notched a victory in its first game action of the season on Friday with a 24-12 exhibition win over the Langley Saints on the road. Head coach Matt Todd said he was pleased with his team’s work ethic. “The kids played hard all game long,” he said. “We played well, and they learned quite a bit.” The Marauders didn’t waste any time getting started, as they scored on their first play from scrimmage. Quarterback Joe Schuster connected with Rashaun Simonese for an

89-yard touchdown reception. The Saints pushed back in the second quarter, getting deep into Marauders territory only to be denied as the Marauders defence made two goal line stands to twice prevent Langley from getting on the board. The Marauders took a 7-0 lead into the second half, and didn’t touch the ball for much of the third quarter. The Saints ate up the clock with an eight-minute opening drive that saw the home team run the ball all the way downfield for a touchdown. However, the Saints, who don’t have a kicker, opted to go for a twopoint convert and were denied by the Pitt defence, leaving the Ma-

rauders with a 7-6 lead. The Marauders offence got to work as running back Tanner Harley scored a touchdown late in the third quarter, and then again early in the fourth to give Pitt Meadows a 21-6 lead. The Saints managed to air out a pass for a touchdown to cut the Pitt lead to nine points, but a late 15-yard field goal from Pitt kicker Anthony Gagnon put the game out of reach for Langley. “I think the team took a bit of a step back in the second quarter, but we talked at half time, and I think the O-line really picked it up in the second half,” Todd said. Schuster was 5-8 for 125 yard passing, and made a number of smart

play with his feet “He ran the ball well,” Todd said. “He made good decisions all day.” Sergio Babrera led the defence with seven tackles, while Ryan McFagan and Rashaun Simonese both grabbed interceptions. “I think we’re looking good,” said Todd. “We had 14 players on this team in the spring and we’re sitting at 28 right now.” The senior Marauders next face North Vancouver’s Windsor Dukes in exhibition action this Friday, and return home for their home-opener under the lights at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 30. The junior varsity Marauders were also in action on Friday, losing 32-13 to Langley’s junior squad.

Knights teams continue winning ways

The Meadowridge Knights community football program had another successful weekend, with local teams picking up five wins in seven games played. The midget Knights downed Cowichan 27-20 in the home opener for the senior team. The Knights had a strong offensive showing, led by quarterback Cole Warren and the

receiving crew of Daniel Childress, Cory Takahara, Trevor Leblanc and Dylan McDermid. Defensively, Travis McCrea and Elijah Goerzen kept the Cowichan quarterback under pressure. The midget squad improved to 1-2 on the season, and plays next week against Burnaby at home at Samuel Robertson Technical.

In bantam action, the Knights defeated Abbotsford 18-14. Jackson Murdoch scored two touchdowns for the Knights behind the solid blocking of David Rainey and Nikola Damnjanovic. The Knight’s defence was led by Jake Rodgers with two interceptions and solid tackling from Matt Oye and Tyrel Ogloff. See Knights, p24

The wins and losses might not count for anything, but Ridge Meadows Flames head coach Tavis Eaton is happy to have finished the preseason with a pair of victories last week. The Flames travelled to Mission on Thursday, when they defeated the Icebreakers 4-2 before winning the rematch 4-1 at home on Friday. Eaton said he was glad to see the team end the preseason on a winning note. “It gives the guys some confidence heading into the regular season,” he said. “I thought we played well as a team, and that’s a good sign.” The Flames were 1-3 heading into the twogame exhibition series with Mission, and now finish the 2011 preseason with a 3-3 record. Despite some fights early in the game Friday, the Flames managed to avoid the penalty box for the remainder of the game, allowing them a number of power play opportunities. “Mission was playing very physical,” Eaton said. “I think they were probably trying to intimidate us, but it didn’t work.” The Flames begin the regular season this Friday when they play host to the Grandview Steelers. Flames home opener this Friday Flames from p23 The Flames dropped both preseason games to the Steelers, and Eaton says he expects another strong outing from the Burnaby hockey club “They are such a well-rounded team,” Eaton said. “They have a very good power play, so if we can stay out of the penalty box, we’ll limit their chances. Discipline is a big thing when you play a team like that.” The majority of the Flames roster will be in the lineup for Friday’s home opener. Some notable absences will include Trevor Sutton, who is out injury, and forward Danny Brandys, who is expected to rejoin

the team next week after working in Alberta for the past few months. “Getting a player of Danny’s caliber will really help us,” said Eaton. “You just don’t find 72-point-getters like that anywhere.” Also out of the lineup will be Matt Bissett, who has signed with the Trail Smoke Eaters of the Junior A B.C. Hockey League. With 12 rookies on the roster, Eaton doesn’t expect any easy nights this season.

However, he said he has been impressed with the team’s camaraderie and work ethic thus far. “You can feel it in the dressing room. The group seems a lot closer this season,” Eaton said. “I’m excited. If we keep our work ethic, we should be okay.” • The Ridge Meadows Flames junior B hockey club plays the Grandview Steelers this Friday at home at Planet Ice in Maple Ridge. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Knights post wins over Mission, Chilliwack Knights from p23 In junior bantam play, the Knights beat Mission 30-0. Dexter Stewart played well for the Knights and Thomas Janke also had a strong game on the offensive line. Garret Orobko played well at slotback while Justin Fedorako had a strong game at corner. In peewee action, the Gold Knights beat Chilliwack Blue Gaints 14-12 in a thriller. With 40 seconds left in the game Chilliwack scored to take the lead 12-8. However, Cade Cote scored for the Knights on the last play of the game, running 55 yards for a touchdown. On offense Angus MacDonald, Jacob Gordon and Sean Roy provided excellent blocking while defensively Dryden Pollen had a strong game at corner. Brayden Hamilton kicked the extra point that ended up being the difference in the game, and made a key block on the last

play of the game. The peewee Blue Knights won 12-6 over Mission. Both Knights’ touchdowns were scored by Brandon Hunt. Tyler Spencer completed five straight passes while Mason Wakabayashi, Tato Ferreyro-Araya and Jake Loftus made some great gains on offense. Darius Joseph, Shaan Singh, Nickolas Leinhaas and Chase Wise played a solid defensive game. The atom Blue Knights suffered their first loss of the season in Mission. Spirits were high, and the boys played hard throughout the game, but they were out-sized, and unable to slow the attacking Niner defense. Knights quarterback Cody

Hogarth, full-back Riley Celino, and tight-end Riley Rooney all saw some positive yards, but the Mission team quickly adapted keeping the Knights out of the end zone. Linebackers Dallas Pattenden and Ciaran Davies, and cornerback Nicho Zolliker made a number of tackles in the Niner back-field, but a few big plays went for big gains as the Knights fell to the Niners 34-0. The atom Gold Knights forfeited their game to Chilliwack on Saturday as they did not have enough players. The players that did show up displayed great spirit and played a friendly scrimmage with some of the Chillwack players.

Losing a home is risky Pet s by Brigitta MacMillan

P

eople tend to see animal shelters as sanctuaries. That’s not the animals’ experience. Going from a home to a shelter is devastating. Depending on age and temperament, some cats don’t survive. No matter how kind the volunteers are or how cozy the rooms are, they’ve still lost everything that was familiar, everyone they loved. At a shelter, a pet will be exposed to common viruses. Plus, his immune system will be taxed by the transition to shelter life. He will likely contract an upper respiratory infection. These usually clear up within a couple of weeks, but can result in serious complications such as loss of sight from corneal ulceration or death from pneumonia. Benson lost the home he’d had all nine years of his life when his family moved. He was a cheerful, affectionate cat even when he was new at the shelter. But he contracted a particularly severe case of cat flu and stayed at the vet’s for several days. It took three different medications before he was discharged to a permanent foster situation. He was frail for quite a while until he gained strength back. A pet may be too upset to eat for several days after ending up at a shelter. Cats are unique among animals in that their bodies cannot withstand fasting. Failure to eat for more than a few days can lead to liver failure and death.

When Baby’s person died, she lived alone in the house for several months until she was put in shelter care. Wide-eyed and hissing, she wouldn’t allow anyone near her. She had been eating, but then appeared to be losing weight. Back to a single cage, she went for monitoring, still hissing and unhappy. Beyond help, she died that night. Trixie lost her home of 10 years due to allergies in the family. She was a friendly cat who purred easily and enjoyed affection. However, a week later she changed. She stopped eating and sat hunched with her face in a corner. The vet treated her with two different antibiotics, took X-rays, and did bloodwork, but couldn’t pin down a diagnosis. Eighteen days after losing her home, she died. She simply lost the will to live. A busy shelter, with its ever-changing population, can leave a sensitive cat withdrawn or aggressive. The Catch-22 is that they cannot escape the environment that makes them tense because they are tense. Nobody wants to adopt a pet with a short fuse. Cats who grew up as the only cat have an especially hard time in a shelter among other cats. Jilly is a pretty brown tabby who loves people. She wants attention and asks for it eagerly. Yet she can never get away from other cats. Inevitably, one wanders too close so Jilly lashes out in agitation at whoever is touching her, costing herself the human company she longs for. She was fostered through an illness and proved to be a loving cat in a home environment. See Pets, p26

Jilly sits in a high corner.

Shelter is a last resort Pets from p25 But she has yet to find someone who will adopt her on faith that she’ll relax at home. The Katie’s Place volunteers love Jilly and the other animals, giving them as much individual attention as possible. However, it’s not the same as having someone of your own to curl up beside at night. The shelter is a last resort for cats who face euthanasia without it. Any good alternative to surrendering a pet would be preferable. If a new

residence is the problem, a pet could board with relatives until pet-friendly housing is found. If a new baby is the problem, they can live together harmoniously with some minor adjustments. The volunteers are happy to help find solutions to issues. Compromising and problem-solving may save a pet’s life. Brigitta MacMillan is a volunteer at Katie’s Place, an animal shelter in Maple Ridge.
