BIA busy cleaning up graffiti Mostly one tagger responsible for rash by Phi l M elnyc h u k staff reporter Gone. Maple Ridge businesses can only hope so. The graffiti vandal who’s been busy the past week, uses that word in his or her tags and has the business improvement association trying to clean them up before they attract more of the same. “Lots of graffiti, it’s unbelievable. There are some property owners who have already cleaned up quite a bit, but there’s so much, it’s just an overnight spree,” said Ineke Boekhorst, executive-director of the Downtown Maple Ridge Business Improvement Association. Boekhorst said that in the past week, the tagger has hit alleys on the south and north sides of Lougheed Highway, near 224th Street, as well as Organic World restaurant on 222nd Street and Dewdney Trunk Road. Protest growing against Campbell Luigi Aquilini among others given Order of B.C. by Phi l M elnyc h u k staff reporter A Maple Ridge woman has started an online petition stating that former premier Gordon Campbell is ineligible to receive the 2011 Order of B.C. Many agree with Cheryl Baron, as she’s collected 3,785

names since setting up the petition Sunday and has upped her goal of getting 5,000 signatures to 25,000. Baron, a NDP member, says Campbell is ineligible for the nomination, let alone winning the award, because he was still an MLA on March 10, the date nominations closed for the Order of B.C. Campbell didn’t step down until March 14. “I’m horrified at the flaunting of the rules, and that’s what set

me off,” she said Tuesday. “It has to be said. There are too many things that are happening that are not normal in this province. Aquilini “Everybody has to live by the same rules. Otherwise,

we’ll have chaos.” Given the state of the world, “you can’t let it go. Even if you lose, you can’t let it go. You’ve got to say something.” Baron also helps run the “Gordon Campbell does not deserve the Order of B.C.” Facebook page, which has 3,783 likes. Baron accepts that the government of the day looks more kindly on candidates from the their own party, but also considers other names. See Order of B.C. p4

he recent passing of NDP Leader Jack Layton is a saddening reminder of how cancer can affect the lives of so many people. Unfortunately, cancer treatments couldn’t improve Layton’s health and he succumbed to the disease on Aug. 22. But they have helped many others, like 13-year-old Cam Hicks of Maple Ridge, who’s recovered from Leukemia and this year has been given the honour of being a Terry’s Team Member during the Terry Fox Run on Sunday, Sept. 18. Team members must have personal experience with battling cancer in order to be selected, and Hicks says he feels more connected to Terry because the two shared the same experiences of having cancer at a young age. “It makes you feel good to be involved with the run because Terry raised all that money for cancer research and, to this day, the run is still going on, which is helping raise even more money,” he said. “Cancer affects everyone, not just the people battling the disease. We could use everyone’s help and everyone should do this run.” Part of being a Terry’s Team Member involves speaking at public events, an idea that would make many teenagers cringe. But not Hicks, who’s been participating in the Terry Fox Run since early childhood. “I’m still working on my speech. I don’t really know what I’m going to say at this point, but I’m going to be doing that with a friend.” “He’s a remarkable young

He’s graciously agreed to act in that capacity, which is incredible.” To date, over $550 million has been raised worldwide for cancer research in Terry’s name through the Terry Fox Foundation. The meeting place for this year’s run will be on the soccer field at the Hammond Community Centre in Maple Ridge. Registration will start at 8:30 a.m. and the run itself will begin at 10 a.m. Last year, 700 local partici-

Roberto Cellere, who works in the charity’s Quebec office, helped introduce the program in just a few weeks – and at a low cost – with Artez Interactive, the foundation’s online fundraising solutions and e-commerce provider. “The app was created to give the foundation the ability to leverage the power of mobile technology to the fullest extent possible,” Cellere said, adding, “In 2010, the foundation experienced a significant increase in online fundraising revenues and that success provided the impetus to move forward with

According to Wakeling, the Terry Fox Foundation allocates more money back to cancer research than any other cancer fundraiser in Canada. “For every dollar raised, 85 cents goes directly towards cancer research. Of every dollar raised, 85 cents is spent directly on cancer research programs. Since it started, the foundation has brought in more than $500 million to fight the disease that claimed Fox’s life in 1981. • For more information on the app, visit terryfoxrun.org.

Norm Daykin, the dad of Maple Ridge’s current mayor, spent his final days, weeks and months exactly where he wanted to, in his home on York Street, where he had lived since 1966. “That was one of his goals. He wanted to be at home as long as he could. So he won that one,” Mayor Ernie Daykin said Tuesday. “My dad was a real easy-going guy. Always had a smile on his face. Everywhere I went, everybody said, ‘How’s your dad?’ “ Norm, 83, died in Ridge Meadows Hospital on Monday, after a lifetime in the dairy industry. He married his wife June in Edmonton in 1950, then settled on the family farm in Maple Ridge, raising chickens and milking cows until 1956. After that, he worked as a milk tester for the Ministry of Agriculture and the Dairy Herd Improvement Association. Towards the end of his career, he worked in the lab in Burnaby and Victoria. In addition to his work in the dairy industry, Norm was extensively involved in Burnett Fellowship Baptist Church in Maple Ridge. He served on the board of deacons, as did his father, either as a member of the board or treasurer for 40 years. He also served as an usher, greeter, gardener or general handyman, as well as a local historical resource, often speaking about his early days on the family farm. “Norm was known for his ready smile and infections laugh … well more like a giggle. “People always felt a wee bit happier with the day after Norm went his way,” says his obituary. “He was also proud of his deep family roots in Maple Ridge. His grandpa Hampton arriving in 1879, and then grandpa Daykin in 1915. “He was not afraid to share his thoughts on how he felt things were going in town and how elected folks could get a bit better.”

Seven years ago, the company sold the 105-hectare Codd Wetlands in north Pitt Meadows, into public ownership, donating $500,000 to the cause. The area is now known as the Codd Wetland-Aquilini Conservation Reserve. The company also reduced the price of the nearby Blaney Bog property, appraised at $4 million, by $400,000. That’s now known as Blaney Bog Regional Reserve. Along with his three children and 14 grandchildren, Aquilini has supported causes related to children such as B.C.

Children’s Hospital, juvenile diabetes research and the Canucks for Kids Fund, and the Canucks Autism Network. The Golden Eagle Group, part of the Aquilini Investment Group, owns close to 5,000 acres of farmland in Pitt Meadows. Members of the Aquilini family – Francesco, Elisa, Paulo and Roberto – along with related companies, still face Fisheries Act and Water Act charges in Port Coquitlam provincial court in connection with the installation of a water intake pipe into the North Alouette River in 2009. THE NEWS/opinion News Views

Provocative proposal High home costs are increasingly pricing people out of the real estate market and raising questions about Metro Vancouver’s long-term affordability and sustainability. The market’s rise has been partly driven by an influx of foreign investment, including a steady parade of buyers from China. Meanwhile, the struggle continues to find new funding for TransLink for much-needed transit expansion without inflicting too much pain on already heavily taxed residents and motorists. Gas taxes, vehicle levies and tolls are all hugely unpopular. So here’s one provocative proposal that might help put a dent in both problems: Double TransLink’s current residential property tax rates. But at the same time, create a home-owner grant that rebates 50 per cent of the TransLink tax. Like the homeowner grant on municipal property tax, the TransLink version would exclude second vacation homes and disqualify owners who aren’t Canadian citizens or landed immigrants. There’d be no change in the $230 a year in property tax the average resident homeowner now pays TransLink for a typical $650,000 house in Metro Vancouver. Most working folks would notice no difference. But the transportation authority would suck twice as much cash from foreign buyers, other non-resident owners and speculators. A $4-million luxury condo owned by a Shanghai business magnate or Alberta oil tycoon – who jets in once or twice a year – might bring $2,800 to TransLink each year instead of the current $1,400. And why shouldn’t they pay more? They come to enjoy Vancouver’s legendary livability yet make no permanent commitment to the region and use scarce housing inefficiently. And if a selective TransLink tax hike on non-residents or other owners of ritzy homes takes even a bit of the juice out of our overheated real estate market, so much the better. – Black Press

Tough sales tax choices remain VICTORIA – Bill Vander Zalm’s most fantastic claim after the defeat of the harmonized sales tax was that B.C. could go back to the old provincial sales tax in six weeks if the government wanted to. Remember, this is B.C. Views the guy who once figured he could run Tom Fletcher an election campaign out of his car. He also promised to cut the price of beer, then once elected, brought in a property purchase tax instead, without consultation. But I digress. Vander Zalm’s typically simplistic analysis soon gave rise to another conspiracy theory. That’s the one that holds that the B.C. Liberals are dragging their feet on reinstating the old provincial sales tax so they can rake in added revenue for another 18 months. That would help repay the federal government $1.6 billion for the transition fund that helped B.C. institute the HST. The finance ministry provided some details to get a better sense of the task ahead. First, there are 70,000 businesses in B.C. that switched their accounting and point-of-sale systems to the HST. It’s not likely that they kept notes, hardware and software on hand in anticipation of having to switch back. Then there are the roughly 1,000 businesses that start up each month in B.C.

Assuming most of that continues, by the time the federal and provincial governments undo the HST in March 2013, there will be thousands of businesses that have no experience dealing with the PST. They’re in for an unpleasant surprise. Here’s one example. Smart Tax Alliance co-chair Mike Jagger got involved in the effort to defend the HST because of his experience running a security company in Vancouver. Due to the ambiguous nature of the PST rules, he got expert advice on how to pay the tax. Three different experts gave him three different answers. You have probably heard by now that after the rejection of the HST by 55 per cent of voters, the PST is to be reinstated as it was before July 2010. Finance Minister Kevin Falcon vowed, “I can assure British Columbians PST will not be applied to such items as restaurant meals, bikes and gym memberships – just as it was before the HST was introduced in B.C.” That sounds pretty definitive. But I’ve learned in the last two years that there is seldom a simple answer with sales taxes. For instance, should B.C. reduce tobacco taxes by seven per cent? Unless you’re a smoker, you probably didn’t notice that the HST raised the price of cigarettes by that amount. Tobacco was PST exempt, with the province historically having chosen to impose a separate “sin tax” instead. Liquor taxes also went down under HST, from a 10-per-cent provincial tax to seven per cent. The B.C. govern-

ment increased the Liquor Distribution Branch markup to hold onto the revenue, billing it as a policy move so as not to encourage drinking. The hotel room tax also went down by a point under HST. Should that be raised? These are policy decisions that still must be made, with the province still in deficit.

I’ve learned in the last two years that there is seldom a simple answer with sales taxes.

• A correction to last week’s column: I referred to a PST reduction for Toyota Prius hybrids, suggesting it would be restored. In fact this tax break had a sunset clause, and would have expired in March 2011 in any case. B.C.’s 2008 “green budget” brought in a series of PST incentives for fuel-efficient vehicles, from $1,000 to $2,000 depending on how carbon-efficient they were. PST exemptions were also extended to Energy Star appliances. The centerpiece of that budget was the carbon tax. THE NEWS/letters Uncertainty around HST vote is what hurt EDITOR, THE NEWS:

Re: HST defeat inspiration, proof (Letters, Sept. 2). Once again more opinions get posted with false information that ends up misleading readers because they believe that if it’s printed, it must be fact. Sean Orcutt has every right to congratulate the “yes” vote and he is correct that the vote will resonate amongst government in future decision making. While he’s patting everyone on the back, though, he starts making comments that are misleading and false. The HST has not been suppressing the B.C. economy. The uncertainty around the outcome of the vote has been the factor that’s hindering or will be forcing a number of key economic decisions, either fast tracking investment or putting B.C. companies at risk of losing large global business proposals and contracts because they cannot compete with businesses who can offer better deals due to reduced costs, like the film industry, ship building, and a number of others. His comment that “business in B.C. had to switch to the HST, and they only had a few months”, again is flat out wrong. It was over a year. While I agree 18 months is too long, keep in mind, the government has to hire hundreds of PST officers (and, no, they are not all sitting at home waiting for a phone call), find them a place to operate, create a centralized office with management and systems, purchase computers systems and desks, re-train staff or fully train them, get printed information to the businesses and re-educate them on the processes, set up the online component and hire people to manage those systems. Meanwhile, the businesses have to change all their accounting (once a date is known) and most will have to add dozens of man hours to their business process. Mr. Orcutt, if you can do that in 6 weeks, you should run for premier. Lastly, you may see the campaign for the “no” side as a waste or “propaganda,” but over the past six months, the more people understood the tax, the real implications, and the more they listened to the economists (people smarter than you and me), the shift went from 85 per cent or more against the tax to 55 per cent. To me, those stats mean that the people who took the time saw the truth. I will agree with you again, Mr. Orcutt, the world hasn’t ended, but your knowledge of the results, like job creation, is happening under your nose and you can’t see it. In Maple Ridge alone there are a number of businesses that really benefited from the tax incentives the HST brought and one new business in particular will soon employ 12 locals. And reduced costs? How about hundreds of thousands in savings in building the Port Mann Bridge? Guess you missed that story. There are dozens of more examples. And your rebate cheque, and the one for seniors and low income earners, will not be coming. I am sure that with the rising costs of, well, everything, the $30 bucks or so the GST rebate brings will come in real handy. That’s a haircut and a coffee, and a tip. DEAN BARBOUR MAPLE RIDGE

Teachers have earned their pay EDITOR, THE NEWS:

Re: Teachers paid pretty darn good (Letters, Aug. 31). As a future teacher currently working on my degree, I could not be angrier at the comments Mr. Bourne and others have made about teachers, complaining that they are overpaid. I realize this is a hot topic because of the job action in the fall, and it has been a hot topic in the past, and the misinformation that people make public during these times of interest is the biggest part of the problem. Mr. Bourne says he did his research, but he might want to keep digging. He’s right that wages vary from district to district. Within a few minutes, I located the teacher’s salary grid for our district on the BCTF website and according to that, the highest salary a SD42 teacher could have earned in 2010 was just over $69, 000 – a far cry from the $83,000 he quoted. I agree, that is a significant number and that many people do not earn close to that in a year, but it is not a starting wage for a teacher. A salary like that is earned by someone who has obtained a master’s degree or higher. I’ve never read a letter to the editor regarding doctors’ salaries because we all understand the stress of the job and the amount of education

it requires. So why do we question the salary earned by teachers, who also face significant job stress and educational hurdles? Teachers who earn higher salaries are the administrators at your child’s school, or veteran teachers with 10-plus years of experience. Beginning teachers certainly are not making that much. And they don’t even have a secure job. Most are laid off each June, or only have temporary positions that last a few months. As for their time off, during their two months off in the summer, most teachers are working, not going to the beach. In fact, during the regular school year, many have a second job so they can afford daily expenses when they first start out. In the summer, many teachers teach summer school, work at private learning centres, or drive truck to supplement their income. So really, they’re getting two weeks off at Christmas and one or two weeks off at spring break. Is that unreasonable? I don’t think so. Most unionized jobs have several weeks of paid vacation, why shouldn’t teachers get the same? And their benefits package? It’s comparable to most unionized jobs, so why should they be criticized for it?

Yes, teachers work a sixhour day on the clock. Yes, they technically get a break at recess and lunch. However, all the teachers I know run tutorials, mark work, prep for next block, run student clubs, or attend meetings, catching a few bites to eat in between during those breaks most days. And I agree, they don’t work an eight-hour day; it’s closer to 10 or more when marking and extra-curricular activities are included (especially high school teachers, who mark between 100-200 students’ assignments. Yes, many people volunteer their time to coach etc., but when they walk away because they don’t have time, need to work more hours, or want to spend time with their families, everyone understands. Too bad it isn’t the same for teachers. The salary might seem high, but factor in the money spent to get that salary. To teach in B.C. you must have a bachelor’s degree and a B.C. Teaching certificate. A four-year bachelor’s degree costs roughly $24,000. A one-year teaching program: $7,000-10,000. That’s about $34,000 spent just to start teaching. In other words, almost an entire year’s salary. So, I guess teachers do have a “pretty darn good” salary, but they’ve earned it.

However, the money isn’t why we go into teaching. We do it because we love teaching kids. I’m willing to get laid off every year, and work two jobs because I love teaching kids. I’ll buy computer programs, class sets of books that will help my students learn better, that the school can’t afford, and other materials out of my own pocket that I won’t get reimbursed for because I love teaching kids.

“It’s never been about the money. It’s always been about the kids.”

It’s never been about the money. It’s always been about the kids. Teachers and future teachers don’t want you to cry a river for us. We aren’t looking for sympathy. All we ask is for a little recognition for the hard work we do. Remember, the reason you can read this is because a teacher took the time to teach you. KRISTIE WARD SFU STUDENT PITT MEADOWS

Maple Ridge, I saw a very elderly man with 2 canes walking beside his wife in a wheelchair. The couple was delivering newspapers. He was wearing one of the Yellow anti-HST vests. It is for folks like this that we must ensure that the Liberals do not dawdle in reverting back to the PST/ GST set up. We should not have to wait a year. The Liberals have had months to start planning the transition. If they are unprepared, that is an indicator of extremely poor management.

Speed Watch volunteers Clara Mohr, Lou Nerada and Paul Fort check for speeders along Kanaka Way by Kanaka Creek elementary on Tuesday, the first day of school. Anyone caught going more than 30 km/h in the school zone can expect a letter in the mail explaining how much the fine would be if RCMP had been ticketing. The Speed Watch team visited to Webster’s Corners elementary later that morning.

It’s back to school, so watch your speed With school back in session, Speed Watch volunteers are out in full force, reminding motorists to slow down, especially in school zones. The Speed Watch community policing program aims to raise awareness about speeding and traffic infractions, and is intended to be a friendly reminder to motorists about the dangers of speeding. “With today’s busy lifestyles, it is all too easy to get caught up with the pace and not pay attention to our driving behaviours,” said Clint Van Blanken, RCMP crime prevention/volunteer coordinator. “By having our Speed Watch volunteers at local schools, it is a friendly way of spreading the message without citizens having to pay a fine and receive points on their licence.”

“By having our Speed Watch volunteers at local schools, it is a friendly way of spreading the message without citizens having to pay a fine and receive points on their licence.” The Speed Watch program is a volunteer initiative hosted between the RCMP, ICBC, Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. “You’ve probably seen us out and about with our van and large LED speed reader board,” Van Blanken said. “Basically, volunteers head out to areas of concern, like high crash

locations, schools and parks, as well as respond to requests from citizens.” Volunteers are armed with RCMP radar equipment and record the description and plate info of any vehicle traveling

11km/h above the posted speed limit. Subsequently, that information is turned over to the administrative staff within Ridge Meadows RCMP and the registered owner of the offending vehicle will

get a warning letter. Along with speeding infractions, volunteers are also watching for people operating hand held devices while driving, or missing a front licence plate from their vehicle.

A 45-year-old Surrey man is safe after spending four days stuck on a cliff in a remote part of Golden Ears Provincial Park. His was just one of the calls Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue attended over what was a busy Labour Day long weekend for volunteers. Ridge Meadows SAR received a call about an overdue hiker Friday afternoon. The man had planned to hike in a remote area east of Pitt Lake, and was supposed to have returned Aug. 29. A text message the man had sent put him in the Tingle Peak area, near Hector Ferguson Lake. “It was an ambitious hike,” said Rick Laing of Ridge Meadows SAR. Crews found the man’s truck parked at Grant Narrows Provincial Park at the south end of Pitt Lake. Crews searched the trail head, which was

accessible only by boat, but no boat was found in the area. Unbeknownst to the search party, the engine on the man’s inflatable boat had failed, and he opted instead to hike further south than he had intended. Rescue crews from Coquitlam, North Shore, and Central Fraser Valley were all called in to help with the search, and a helicopter was deployed to aid crews on the ground. They eventually found the man’s boat and gear, but crews working through the night were unable to spot him on the trail. The next day, the helicopter crew spotted the man stuck on a cliffside with a fire going, franti-

Rescue crews were able to find the boat and tow it back down the lake. “Cell reception is very bad up there,” said Laing, adding that proper boat maintenance is critical if you are travelling to remote areas, such as Pitt Lake. “You never know if someone is going to come by or not.” Ridge Meadows SAR was also to assist Surrey Search and Rescue with a missing person on Sunday.

While climbing down from a mountain ridge, Laing said the man had lost his way in the clouds, and found himself stuck on the steep mountainside. “Where he was, he couldn’t get up or down,” said Laing. Despite having spent four days on the cliff, the man appeared to be healthy and unhurt. “He wasn’t too dehydrated, and he had been rationing his food and eating berries,” said Laing. “He was very sore and tired. He looked like he’d been in the bush.” Local rescue crews were also called out to

THE NEWS/arts&life National Ballet School accepts local dancer Erika Bernard had the opportunity of a lifetime recently as she was one of four girls from B.C. to be accepted to the National Ballet School of Canada for a month. The 11-year-old native of Maple Ridge spent four weeks in Toronto,

studying and performing with other young dancers from around the country. Last year, Bernard was one of the youngest students accepted into the NBS summer program at just 10-years-old. Bernard currently trains at the danceLAB Studios Ltd. located in Coquitlam. “We are incredibly proud of [her] for the dedication and commitment to

dance training,” Kirsten Sjoman, co-artistic director of danceLAB, said. “While most dancers break for the summer, she puts on her ballet tights and ballet shoes all [summer], dancing four to five classes a day, six days a week.” Up next for Bernard is a dance performance for the showdown at the fair at PNE.

New shake on an old dance Local bellydancers competing in Las Vegas festival by A s hley Bh a n contributor

T

he ancient Middle Eastern art form of bellydancing has been upgraded to the 21st century by local bellydancers Heidi Cannon and Leslie Sakata, who’ve managed to fuse comedy, athleticism and ballet into a successful routine that will be on display at The Bellydance Intensive and Festival in Las Vegas this week. The four-day event, the biggest in North America, runs from Sept. 8 to 11th and aims to celebrate the art and beauty of bellydancing by featuring several performances, small dance competitions and workshops. Although bellydancing originated in the Middle East, its popularity in North America has caused a dance evolution resulting in a tremendous diversity of styles and interpretations. “We’re incorporating canes into our routine. There’s one part in the dance where I swing the canes at Leslie’s head and she ducks and then we go into a mini fight scene,” Cannon said. “It’s really cool. That’s the great thing about bellydancing, you can use props and fuse so many other styles into it.” “We’re both very active and I think that makes us different from your average bellydancer. We don’t have big bellies,” Cannon joked. “We like to spice things up a little so we’re bringing a lot more athleticism to our routines.” Cannon fell into bellydancing after watching singer Shakira perform on television eight years ago. The former tomboy was intrigued by the different

body movements and decided to take it up as a hobby and now performs with Sakata at parties and several restaurants around Maple Ridge. Last week the girls performed at the fair at PNE as a test run leading up to the Las Vegas festival. “The crowd loved it, they were shocked to see how different we are, but they cheered for us anyway. It was really great,” she said. “We love making people laugh and making them smile while we’re performing. It’s funny because we usually get those crowds were some people are really into it and other people are just in shock.” Cannon hopes the trip to Las Vegas will provide the team with the exposure they crave to help them get in touch with important contacts in the bellydancing world. “There are always connections to be made. We want to have a bellydancing DVD out soon, and there are people in Vegas who can help us with that,” Cannon said. “We want to get ourselves out there and show our fellow bellydancers what we can do.” Although they’ll receive a warm reception in Las Vegas, the same can’t be said for performing in Maple Ridge. The girls say they’ve been receiving mixed reactions. “A lot of places we ask to dance at say no because their clientele is really shy,” Cannon said. “It’s sad in that way. I hate when people think we’re strippers. That is not what we do!” “We want to be recognized for having lighter performances that poke fun at ourselves rather than have a sexy, serious and sensual performance. Our goal is to show women and everyone out there that there’s another side of bellydancing besides the stereotypical one.”

THE NEWS/sports Flames feature new faces for 2011/12 Section coordinator: Robert Mangelsdorf 604-467-1122 ext. 216

sports@mapleridgenews.com

Players like Brandon Yip, Kellan Tochkin, and Brad Hunt all got their start with the Ridge Meadows Flames, and quickly ascended the hockey development ladder. Just last year, former Flames goalie Eric Williams successfully transitioned to the WHL, playing 40 games with the Prince Albert Raiders before being traded to the Lethbridge Hurricanes in the off-season. “There’s opportunities here, for sure, Eaton said.

he Ridge Meadows Flames are hoping for a return trip to the junior B PaciďŹ c International Junior Hockey League playoffs as they prepare for the 2011/12 season. This year’s edition of the Flames will feature many new, younger faces, as many of the pieces to last year’s team have aged out or moved on from the PIJHL. But with youth comes energy, and head coach Tavis Eaton expects a far more eet-footed squad to take the ice this season. “We’re faster, and when you look at the best teams in the league ... that’s how they play,â€? he said. The Flames played their ďŹ rst exhibition games last weekend, dropping a pair to the Grandview Steelers. The Flames fell 4-3 at home to the Steelers on Friday night before travelling to the Burnaby Winter Club Sunday, when they lost 4-1. The Flames play their ďŹ rst regular season game Sept. 23 at home at Planet Ice in Maple Ridge, also against the Grandview Steelers. The team’s home games will be played every Friday at 7:30 p.m. Captaining the team this year is 20-year-old Shane Harle, who has been with the team since his rookie season at 16. “He’s the longest serving member of the team and there’s a lot of respect for him in the dressing room,â€? said Eaton. “He never complains, he always works hard ... and he’s pretty excited to be captain.â€? Matt Bevilacqua, Reece Rivard, and Joey Weilmeier will all return to the Flames blue line, while Dean Gilmour, Alex Smith, Paul Piluso, Adam

Tyler Klassen will also return for his ďŹ nal campaign in the PIJHL as the Flames’ starting goalie, while sharing time between the pipes with Jordan Eggert. Among the new faces the Flames have signed are a host of young defenceman, including Brad Wardner, Deven Banns, Terence Trus-

At forward, newcomers include Matt Bissett and Trevor Sutton, both formerly of the major midget Vancouver North East Chiefs, as well as Cody Holleran, who played the past four seasons with the Pitt Meadows Marauders football team. Also joining the team will be Peyton Lupul, Kyle Jangula, Adam Callegari, Kenny Prato, and Trevor Harris. “I expect big things from all of them, Eaton said. “They all have the potential to do big things, it’s a matter of hard work.

“There’s a lot of talent on this team. While last season the Flames looked to the Ridge Meadows midget A1 Rustlers for many of their rookie signing, this year’s team features a more geographically diverse group. “Spence Levens has done a great job with the midget A1 team, said Eaton. “And if the talent is there, I’ll take it. But if not, you have to look elsewhere. Eaton is hoping this season’s young group will look to the team’s past for inspiration.

There a number of changes to the PIJHL this season, the most obvious being the Wolf Pack’s departure from Squamish after just two seasons. The team will now be known as the North Van Wolf Pack, and play out of the Harry Jerome Rec Centre. As for rule changes, the PIJHL will be adopting a new overtime format, doing away with the ďŹ ve-round shoot-out. Should a game remained tied after 60 minutes of regulation play, the game will move to four-on-four hockey for a ďŹ ve-minute sudden death overtime period, similar to the NHL. However, should the game remained tied after the ďŹ rst overtime, a second ďŹ ve-minute overtime period will be played, three-on-three. “It’s a good move,â€? said Flames coach Tavis Eaton. “It’s exciting. I think it will be good for the fans.â€? sports@mapleridgenews.com

The Stag is more than just a barbershop Looking Back by Sandra Borger When you visit the barber and sit in his chair, Don’t squirm like a worm while he’s cutting your hair. Don’t shiver, and quiver, and bounce up and down. Don’t shuffle, and snuffle, and act like a clown. Each wiggle, will jiggle, the blades of the shears. Clip-clip, clip-clip: those scissors can slip And snip off a tip of one of your tender pink ears! – The Barbershop, by Martin Gardner

I

t seems as though everybody’s dad or granddad got their hair cut at the Stag Barbershop. Often, generations of Maple Ridge men went there. “A fourth generation client came in not too long ago,” explains current owner Kandace Yaretz. “He said to me, ‘guys who grew up here, moved away, and came back say that this shop hasn’t changed. And they like it like that.’” Most customers have been faithful through the years, though many are more concerned about a getting a good

After a fire destroyed this first business venture, Al reopened his barbershop in 1958 next to the old 5¢ to $1 Store (now the Bingo-Plex) on 224th Street under a new name – The Stag Barbershop. The decor inside the shop has not changed much in the past 50 years: there are a number of stuffed fowl and animal heads mounted

along the walls, all of which receive their own Santa hat during the holidays. Though they were taken down for repainting, Kandace plans to replace the wall of police, ambulance, and fire crew crests collected by Bob Kilsby, one of the original barbers. The shop retains its original large leather chairs that are almost as comfortable as the atmosphere. Wooden cabinets along the south wall were installed when the

shop first opened, and straight back chairs line the north wall for both customers and visitors alike. The white and black checkered linoleum floors were installed by Russ Fisher when he took over the shop in 1984; it seemed that linoleum was easier to keep clean than the previous carpeted floors. Russ remembered his time at the shop with fondness, and especially loved election time. The shop acted like a public forum, where barbers and customers alike would discuss “who the best candidates were, and what the political issues were.” Retired mayor Kathy Morse would come in “to ask questions and see how her popularity was.” The Stag was the best place in town to go for local information, because the barbers talked to everyone. According to Kandace, the barbers knew everything: “Who got into trouble over the weekend, who just bought a house, whose cow had died, and even if there were any events coming up.” The shop was always full, and not just with customers; often, men out doing their errands would pop in for a chat.

IT PAYS TO SHOP AT OTTER CO-OP

The shop acted as a place of contact where men would always find a keen and friendly audience to listen to their stories, told in an unrestrained and comfortable manner. The Stag was a place of unity, where a young man could go for monthly counsel from his older, more experienced male peers. It served as an entry point into the community, where newcomers could create friendships and learn about the municipality. If someone wanted to go fishing or hunting, they just had to go down to the Stag and they would quickly find good company. Though the original barbers are gone, the Stag Barbershop is still vibrant and filled with customers, many of whom are lifelong patrons.

THE NEWS/seniority Music with Seniors and Babies program reconnects generations Mothers with newborns needed to volunteer by R o b e r t M a n g e l s d o r f staff reporter A program at the Bailey House residential care centre next to Ridge Meadows Hospital is helping to reconnect generations of

Maple Ridge residents. Jade Tomlinson is the recreational therapist for Baillie House and is hoping to relaunch the seniors home’s popular Music with Seniors and Babies program this month. The program brings mothers and their newborns into the seniors home, allowing them to interact with the seniors who live there.

“It’s an excellent way for babies, mothers and seniors to benefit from interacting,” said Tomlinson. “It provides an opportunity to see both ends of the life spectrum, what children can bring to the elderly and what seniors can bring to the young.” Tomlinson is looking for new moms with babies under 12 months of age that are comfortable in a residential care setting

to participate in the program. “A lot of seniors don’t have access to young children, and many children don’t have grandparents because they live in other parts of the country,” she said. “It benefits everybody. The children really bring out the best in the seniors. It brings such joy to their lives and helps them stay younger.” Tomlinson is hoping to run the

program every Tuesday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. The program includes songs, rhymes, games, quiet time and goodbye songs. The program is free of charge to participants, however, advanced registration is required. • For more information and to register for the Music with Seniors and Babies program, contact Tomlinson at 604-476-7888 (Ext. 2587).

Program to teach seniors conflict resolution skills staff reporter Ridge Meadows Seniors’ Society is offering a facilitator training program to teach seniors who are still in the workforce valuable communication and conflict resolution skills. The program runs Friday and Saturday, Sept. 23 and 24. Running the program will be Carolynne Errico and Jim Skinner, both of whom are trained in the Adlerian

psychological approach. Their program will provide an engaging format using the Adlarian approach to encourage the participants to interact and learn. This program is funded by the Government of Canada under the New Horizons for Seniors Initiative. A group of seniors underwent the program this past spring. They were trained to take a leadership role as facilitators and learn communication skills. They found the

course to be enlightening and enjoyable, according to Bonny Klovance of the Ridge Meadows Seniors’ Society. “I came into this course assuming I would learn about the role of a facilitator, which I did, and I also learned about dealing with conflict in every day life,” stated one of the program’s participants. • For further information and to register call 604-467-4565 or 604-467-4593 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

A: Are you caring for a spouse or elderly loved one? Do you feel overwhelmed because you can’t do it all? There are solutions available that don’t cost a fortune, and don’t involve moving someone away from a beloved home. If your loved one is experiencing a decline in health or cognitive abilities, a good first step is to visit their doctor. If he or she sees that home health care may be needed, you may be referred to “Home Health,” a service provided by the Fraser Health Authority. Home Health can assess what kind of service your loved one may be eligible for. This includes help with activities like dressing, grooming, and other personal care. Assistance with bathing, housekeeping, transportation, grocery shopping or preparing meals, may not be provided by Home Health. For this you can hire a company that specializes in caring for seniors at home. This can give a busy family an affordable, caring solution, and help them keep up with the rest of life’s responsibilities. The important thing is there are resources available, and sometimes just a little extra help can make all the difference in the world.

COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS 041

On September 1st, 2011, James (Jim) Eugene Jose passed away peacefully with his wife and family at his side. Born on September 11, 1934, in Vancouver, B.C., Jim moved to a farm in Pitt Meadows when he was 10 years old. Following the flood of ’48, Jim moved to Webster’s Corner with his parents and brothers. After serving in the Canadian Army, Jim spent most of his life in Maple Ridge, B.C., proudly working for B.C. Correctional Service. Jim had a dream to re-introduce fish stocks into the depleted river system that he fished as a boy. As a Senior Correctional Officer at Alouette River Correctional Centre, he was instrumental in developing a very successful hatchery program which continues to this day. Over the years, Jim was recognized by many of the fisheries organizations for his dedication and commitment to ensuring the local fish population was maintained and cared for in perpetuity. Predeceased by his first wife, Eve, in 1976, and his son, Lance Aalten, in 2004, Jim is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Vibeke, brothers Angus (Nickie) Jose and Cyril (Pauline) Jose, daughters Lynne (Len) Marsh, and Beverly (Brian) Calvin, sons Kevin Aalten, and Vince (Kathleen) Aalten, and daughter-in-law Sandy Aalten. Jim was delighted with the arrivals of his grandchildren: Alex, Jessica, Scott, James, Cole, Jenna, Kayla, Kelsey and Kassie. He enjoyed watching them grow, measuring them on the wall when they visited. In addition, Jim enjoyed deep friendships with his wonderful neighbours who enjoyed dropping by for a visit. By Jim’s request, there will be no formal service. A private celebration of life will be held at a later date. Condolences may be sent to www.mapleridgefuneral.ca.

Betty Speirs, born Bessie Doreen Edwards, left this world to be with her Lord early in the morning of August 28, 2011. She was bornn in Fleet, Hampshire, England on August 13, 1925. Betty was predeceased by her dear husband Bob, her son Scott, her son-in-law Calvin and her grandson Zachary as well as her sisters Emily and Jean. She was full of love for all of them and was looking forward to seeing them in Heaven. Born between the great wars she was all too familiarr with the perils and prices of war. ar. Four of her maternal uncles diedd in the First World War. Little did shee know that WW11 would bring the love of her life. Betty and Bob met while out bike riding one day and it wasn’t long before they were engaged. They married on December 15, 1945 just as WWII ended. Full of love and anticipation for their life together, Betty along with many other war brides made the long trip to Canada where she reunited with Bob and finally met his family. Bob set to work building a small home in Burnaby and a few years later they moved to New Westminster where they raised their 5 children. After becoming a born-again Christian in the early 50’s, she & Bob joined the New Westminster Evangelical Free Church where she taught Sunday School and was a deaconess. Betty had a wonderful soprano voice and was a frequent soloist in the church and at weddings and funerals. In 1973 they moved to Maple Ridge, later joining the Maple Ridge Baptist Church where they made many new friends. Betty worked at Woodlands School and was the first female Cook I on staff. She retired in her early 50`s so she and Bob had many good years together enjoying each other’s company. For many years Betty met with her Prayer Group weekly – Mary, Doris and Jeanette and although they haven’t met face to face for a while, the telephone kept them close, to the end. Betty is survived by her 4 children: Carolyn aka ‘Kelli’, Craig (Diane), Leone Heinrichs and Melanie. Her grandchildren Sandra Fellner (Lori), Kimberly Mercer (Doug), Angela Bronsema (Mark), Calvin Heinrichs Jr (Bekki), Kris Watts (Dan), Rory Speirs and Adlayna Speirs and thirteen cherished great grandchildren; Kaylee, Caleb, Maceo, Chloe-anna, Makiah, Madison, Vincent, Asher, Miyah, Julia, Emerson, Dezyrae and Tyler. Further survived by her sisters-in-law Pat Coe & June Burgess (Neil) and brother-in-law Ted (Linda) and many much-loved nieces and nephews. She was much loved by all of us and her humour, love, strength, compassion, faith and wisdom will be greatly missed. Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1pm on Saturday, September 10, 2011 at the Baptist Church, 22155 Lougheed Hwy, Maple Ridge. Many thanks to the caring staff on 2west at Maple Ridge Hospital and the angels at the McKenney Hospice who cared for her in her last days. Betty contributed to many charities so instead of flowers please make a donation in her name to the relief mission to Somalia or to the charity of your choice.
