Man fires paintball gun at Mounties
Anything for a good cause at Eric Langton Principal dresses in a dress to encourage student volunteers as they collect for needy kids by R o b e r t M a n g e l s d o r f staff reporter

t wasn’t John Wheatley’s first choice of attire, but the Eric Langton elementary principal is a man of his word.
Wheatley wore a pink dress with a matching blonde wig to school on Friday, much to the delight of the school’s students. Not surprisingly, he lost a bet, but it was one he was happy to lose. The Grade 7 leadership students at Eric Langton collected more than 2,200 non-perishible food items and toys for the Friends in Need Food Bank and the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Christmas Hamper Society, as well as more than $700 in cash donations. Since the students smashed their goal of collecting 1,000 items, Wheatley was obliged to dress as a woman on Friday. “Anything to help the cause,” he says with a grin, stroking his blonde wig. The annual fundraising drive has become an annual tradition at the Maple Ridge school, and this isn’t the first time Wheatley has had to dress in a dress because his students exceeded their fundraising goal. One year he shaved his head. “It hasn’t really grown back,” he says with a laugh. Another year he kissed a pig in front of the whole school. Given that the school is located close to downtown Maple Ridge, in a neighbourhood populated largely by low-income families “A lot of the families we help, they go to this school,” says Wheatley. “The kids know they are helping out some of their fellow students.” This year’s haul was the biggest ever for the school. But even Wheatley had his doubts the students would be able to reach their goal. “I wasn’t convinced they’d get there until [last] Tuesday,” says Wheatley. “The last week they’ve worked really hard.” The Grade 7 students circulated flyers and made announcements on the school’s PA system, encouraging everyone to bring in whatever they and their families could spare. Eric Langton principal John Wheatley lost a bet with his school’s Grade 7 leadership students and had to wear a dress to school last Friday. Students Josh Apura (clockwise, from left), Ty Rowell, Aimee Milliard, Sangeetha Kasturi, and Ryan Cavalaris helped collect more than 2,200 food items and toys for the Friends in Need Food Bank and the Christmas Hamper Society, as well as more than $700 in cash donations. final surge of donations not only put them over their goal, but shattered the previous record. Wheatley couldn’t be prouder. “It’s all the kids, they did everything, so they get all the credit,” he says. Grade 7 student Josh Apura says he wanted to help because he couldn’t imagine having a Christmas without presents to open and food to eat. “I wanted to help out kids, because I kinda felt sad that they wouldn’t
have toys at Christmas,” he says. “Helping out them out is a good thing to do.” It’s a great example of kids helping kids, says Wheatley, and that sense of community is something the school has worked hard to engender in its students. As a community school, Eric Langton elementary is somewhat unique in the school district. The school houses many programs that serve not just the school’s students, but
the surrounding neighbourhood as well, like the HIVE Neighbourhood Centre, and the StrongStart early education program. A two-storey high mural greets visitors and students alike as they pull into the school’s parking lot, stating “Where caring makes a difference.” That’s what we want the kids to learn, says Wheatley, that they can make a difference in someone’s life.
A 48-year-old man was arrested by police Wednesday evening for allegedly shooting paintball pellets at Mounties in Maple Ridge. Ridge Meadows RCMP received a call from a house on 124th Avenue around 6 p.m. reporting a man had entered the home and threatened the home owner. An investigation led officers to the suspect’s house but as police approached it, several paint-balls were fired at officers who immediately took cover. Police then made contact with the man and a friend and he was taken into custody. “Our officers had great presence of mind in this case,” said Staff Sgt. Hector Lee. “The sounds of a paintball gun, and paintballs hitting is far different than real guns or bullets. They recognized that fact, made sure of their safety and then made their approach and arrest.” No officers were injured and police have seized the paintball gun as well as other weapons. The man was held in custody overnight for a court appearance on Thursday. Police are recommending charges of break and enter, uttering threats and possessing weapons. • Anyone with any information about this or any other crime is asked to call Ridge Meadows RCMP at 604463-6251.

WESTSIDE STORY I thought it was about time that I talked about our shop, its history and the type of work we do. Westside is the result of three prior incarnations from my past and this month marks the 32nd anniversary of my owning and operating an automotive repair facility. We’ve been in our current location for 20 years as my original customers will agree, it just seems like yesterday when we moved in! Prior to that we spent two years in the Maple Ridge Industrial Park, battling City Hall as they refused to issue us a business licence. At that time, right in the middle of the first Gulf War, Maple Ridge had an insane restrictive covenant banning auto repair from our one and only industrial park. So we moved! Some of you long term residents may remember my humble beginning’s as I started out way back in 1977 as a mobile mechanic. At that time my company was called Tools On Wheels Mobile Auto Repair. I drove all over the lower mainland fixing just about anything anywhere, working out of a Cube Van. At the time I could not afford the high costs involved in operating a shop, so my intention was to establish my business and build a steady client base in the hopes of opening a shop one day. Fast forward 35 years and Westside is a five bay shop, fully equipped and certified to work any vehicle with any problem, including new vehicles. To survive in today’s business economy in any service repair industry with intense competition you must separate yourself from the rest of the pack. I decided when I started Westside that we would concentrate on newer vehicles & diesel vans & trucks just off their manufacturer’s warranty. We would become your alternative to the dealership. We excel in offering the personal touch and value-added services which the dealer’s are too big and cumbersome to offer. We do this using their parts and service procedures with auto technicians that have more qualifications, as they are fully licenced and equipped to work on all makes, models, fuels and government regulated emissions and inspection’s procedures. This is a bold statement but we can back it up in spades! Quality full service certified automotive diagnostics, repair and maintenance has never been inexpensive and we accept that fact and realize that our level of service and its cost may not be for everyone. We don’t want to work for everyone, we do however want to attract people that realize that nothing in life is free but when they spend their hard earned money they want quality, results, great service and good value or bang for the buck. So if you shop around and base your decisions on the lowest price, don’t bother calling us. If you want to have the job done once, pay for it and get on with your busy life with the minimum of stress, give us a call. Merry Christmas to all, from Cyril, Gerry, Paul & Tessa!

Dawdling district Maple Ridge is where progressive ideas go to die, from delay and distraction. In Pitt Meadows, they just seem to get done. In 2009, the City of Pitt Meadows decided to offer voters live webcasts of its meetings. Maple Ridge is just began doing that this month, although webcasts are delayed a few days. Last spring, residents urged the City of Pitt Meadows to change a bylaw that prohibited bee hives in urban areas. In less than a year, staff had a report to council, and now the city will hold an open house on a bee keeping bylaw in January to gauge public support. A report says urban apiculture as a hobby can contribute to more productive harvests from backyard, street and community gardens. It is estimated that the pollination services provided by bees are often 60 to 100 times more valuable than the market price of honey. Not to mention that bee populations are threatened. In Maple Ridge, bees will have to make honey elsewhere, as a bylaw to allow beekeeping in residential areas has yet to reach council, although it has been discussed for a year and a half. In May 2010, council told staff to get more information on such a bylaw. Then it changed its mind and in June 2010 asked staff to write one anyway. Still, no bylaw. In Maple Ridge, bears continue to rummage through urban areas for food, ripping apart garbage left out overnight, and are sometimes killed for doing so. There’s still no comprehensive bear control bylaw in Maple Ridge. Then there’s the Albion flats. Council ignored the essence of the charette findings, then held a special meeting. Then the Agricultural Land Commission basically confirmed the direction that came from the charette. So Maple Ridge is back to square one, while voters still desire more shopping options. It’s always easy to be quicker if you’re smaller. But the district’s record shows there’s room for improvement and innovation. A little less complacency and more urgency would be a good thing for all at Maple Ridge hall. – The News

Paula, a remarkable six-year-old girl I
t was a few weeks before Christmas that I met Paula. I had just started my mandatory rotation in pediatrics after graduation from medical school. Paula was a remarkable six-year-old girl with a bright and sparkling personality, despite of her frail and Health Care Marco Terwiel sickly appearance. As a new doctor who needed to gain experience, it was my job to interview and examine all new admissions to the pediatric ward and write the admission notes, order appropriate tests and then discuss my findings and plans with the attending pediatrician. Paula had been re-admitted to the hospital because of the suspicion she had a recurrence of her acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a nasty and usually fatal disease. Nearly two years before she was diagnosed and treated with intensive chemotherapy and her disease had gone into remission. Unfortunately, she had a recurrence nine months later. Once again chemotherapy resulted in another remission. In reviewing her chart and listening to the parents, I gathered Paula had been a real trooper, taking in stride the many blood tests, intravenous administrations of toxic anticancer medications, the loss of hair, the nausea and strict isolation proce-

dures to prevent infections. Not once, but twice she had willingly accepted what, under different circumstances would be considered outright torture. Her parents told me they had found it difficult to be as strong as their daughter, seeing the results of the assaults of the drugs on the small and frail body of their only child. They were very proud of her throughout the ordeal, and at the end of the first treatment, things looked hopeful they would be able to see Paula grow up. After her return home, her hair grew back, she gained weight. For more than a year she felt and looked well. Then she developed pneumonia. That turned out to be triggered by a relapse of leukemia. The combination of the pneumonia and a second round of treatment had affected her much more than the first time. Yet she hardly ever complained, and more often than not, often managed a smile for her parents and the nurses. She suffered through weeks of a truly dreadful time, but the reward was that, thankfully, the disease was again brought under control. However, her subsequent recovery was slow and she didn’t really regain her health like before. Now it looked like the leukemia had reared its ugly head again. It was a bad omen this was happening so soon after her second treatment. Paula was awfully thin, pale and weak, and had trouble getting off her mother’s lap and needed help getting onto the examination table. The results of the examination, X-rays and blood tests confirmed the worst. The attending pediatrician was a caring

and empathetic person and he immediately arranged for a conference with the parents, a pediatric cancer specialist, social worker, the head nurse and the hospital chaplain. That move alone conveyed the gravity of the situation to the parents. The pediatrician explained that, based on the experience with many other children with this disease, administering another round of chemotherapy would be futile, if not fatal and would only cause Paula to feel a lot more miserable than she already was before the end came. Paula’s parents then asked if there was any hope at all to save or prolong Paula’s life. The pediatrician gently responded with the only honest answer possible and that was, save for some miracle, their daughter was going to die. Understandably, the parents were heartbroken. They wanted to spend every last minute with their daughter, and I took them back to the ward where Paula had been admitted. When Paula saw her parents come in the room and saw their grief-stricken faces, I was stunned when Paula announced: “I think I am going to die soon.” From that moment on, Paula was the only person in the room with dry eyes. She stated with confidence she was looking forward to meet Jesus, but she really would like to see Santa first. Her wish to see Santa was fulfilled, and Paula died soon after Xmas. TO BE CONTINUED. Dr. Marco Terwiel is a retired family physician who lives in Maple Ridge.

Spike in thefts from Albion autos incidents of crime, not matter how small or insignificant it may seem to you. The reports allow police to track spikes in crime and deploy the right resources which could eventually lead to an arrest.
Arrest at shelter Ridge Meadows RCMP arrested a 25-year-old man on Tuesday after he allegedly threatened another man at a Maple Ridge homeless shelter. Police were called to the Salvation Army Caring Place on the Lougheed Highway around 3:40 p.m. after one man intimidated another with a weapon. The suspect tried to leave the area, but was taken into custody once police arrived. Police said he has no fixed address. The weapon he allegedly used was found and seized by police. The man who was arrested was held in custody overnight for a court appearance on Wednesday.

Curfew broken A 36-year-old Maple Ridge man was arrested late Tuesday after police caught him breaking a court-ordered curfew. RCMP spotted the man around 11:50 p.m., driving a friend’s car in the 22500-block of the Lougheed Highway. The police officer followed the car to the friend’s home, where the man was taken into custody. Police are recommending charges of failing to abide with bail conditions.

Ridge Meadows RCMP knocked on doors in east Maple Ridge on Wednesday to remind residents to remove valuable items from their vehicles. The face-to-face reminder was done following a spike in thefts from cars in Albion, from 240th to 244th Streets, between and 100 and 104 avenues. Police remind residents to install immobilizers or lock their steering wheels with an anti-theft device. “Remove any items of value, or at least keep them out of plain sight,” said Cpl. Alanna Dunlop. “Thieves will not try to get into a car if they’re not likely to be able to steal items.” This includes small change and even recycling items of value such as bottles or cans. On cold mornings or evenings, police advise drivers not to leave cars unattended with the engine running. Ridge Meadows RCMP are also asking resident to report all

WILSON STREET ONE LANE ROAD CLOSURES November 21, 2011 – December 23, 2011 Monday to Friday, 7:00 am to 5:00 pm BC Hydro will be under-grounding a section of the power distribution line that currently runs along the east side of Wilson Street near the Ruskin Dam. This temporary relocation of the distribution line is required for site safety to avoid the risk of any drilling or construction equipment accidently contacting the lines during the field tests or project construction. For five weeks starting November 21, 2011 a single lane closure of Wilson Street will be required to install the duct bank for the distribution line. Priority access will be provided for the school bus and emergency vehicles. Hayward Street over the Ruskin Dam will remain open during this time.
For more information about this project, visit bchydro.com/ruskin, call BC Hydro Public Consultation & Stakeholder Relations at 604 623 4472 / 1 866 647 3334 or email stakeholderengagement@bchydro.com.

Find rest for your soul A
s a pastor in this community, my heart breaks as I often find myself dealing with the fall-out of people’s peace-breakers: job loss, wayward children, addictions, disease, illness, marital unfaithfulness, anxiety, divorce. But trying to help other people through their storm can sometimes mess with my own peace, just because it is difficult not to take up other people’s pain. God responded to Jeremiah’s peace observations with this exhortation: “Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls. But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’ (Jeremiah 6:16 ESV) If you are finding yourself standing at your own crossroads and are filled with anxiety, I encourage you to consider the “ancient paths”… “the good way.” Do not be like the people of Israel in Jeremiah’s day who dug

in their heels and turned their backs stubbornly on God, despite of His constant faithfulness and provision. This Christmas, Jesus Acts of Faith invites you to come find Duane Goerzen rest for your soul. Another prophet of old, who is oft-quoted at this time of year – Isaiah – prophesied that the coming Messiah would be the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6). When the angelic choir appeared to the Bethlehem shepherds, they sang “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom He is pleased” (Luke 2:14) Beyond the shopping, the gifts, the tree, the lights, the decora-
tions, the music, the parties, the baking, the candy, the turkey is something that will last past Dec. 25. Jesus Christ came to be your Messiah. Jesus Christ came to be your Saviour. Jesus Christ came to mend your broken heart. Jesus Christ came to cause blind eyes to see. Jesus came to allow deaf ears to hear. Jesus Christ came to set the captive free. Jesus Christ came to allow you to have a restored relationship with God, the Heavenly Father. It sounds like one of those things that is just too good to be true. Beyond just giving the everelusive peace a chance, turn to Jesus, who promises to be found when people seek Him. In Him is eternal peace only ever found. I found the peace I needed. Jesus changed my life. From all of the wonderful pastors and people with the RidgeMeadows Ministerial Association, we pray for a blessed, joyful, and peace-filled Christmas. Duane Goerzen is pastor at Maple Ridge Community Church.

Pitt 1st, MRSS 2nd at 2011 HawkBall Pitt holds on to No. 3 ranking, Ramblers knock off No. 5 Mouat by R o b e r t M a n g e l s d o r f staff reporter The Pitt Meadows Marauders Air Force took first place at WJ Mouat Secondary’s 2011 HawkBall tournament last weekend in Abbotsford, beating the Maple Ridge Secondary School Ramblers 48-33 in the final. A trio of local players were selected to the tournament all-star team, with Maple Ridge’s Jacob Durkovich and Max Neumann, and Pitt Meadows’ Trevor Severinski each receiving the honour. The tournament final saw Pitt Meadows’ stifling defence get the better of the Ramblers, who never trailed by much. The Marauders led 11-8 after the first quarter, and were up 21-14 at the half. The Marauders pulled away in the second half, winning by 15 points at the final buzzer. Matt Blackaby led the Marauders with 25 points and seven rebounds in the final, while Neumann had 11 points and seven rebounds for the Ramblers. The Ramblers started the tournament with a one-point win over Wellington secondary, 55-54. Neumann led the team with 18 points

In the semi-finals, Maple Ridge played league rival and tournament host WJ Mouat, upsetting the No. 5-ranked team in the province with a 59-48 win. After a slow first quarter, the Ramblers moved ahead 32-27 at the half and never gave up the lead. Neumann had 29 points and 20 rebounds, while Durk-

The Ramblers travel to San Diego after Christmas where they will play in the Montgomery High School Tournament. The Marauders opened their 2011 HawkBall campaign with a 70-67 win over Lord Tweedsmuir. Severinski led the Marauders in scoring with 26 points and 17 rebounds,
while Blackaby had 14 points. Guard Evan Wendt also got into double digits, with an 11-point effort Pitt Meadows faced Kamloops in their semi-final match-up, dispatching them by with a 66-47 win. LeBlanc hoping to lead Team Canada to Olympic berth staff reporter
LeBlanc
Maple Ridge’s Karina LeBlanc is hoping to lead Team Canada to an Olympic berth at the 2012 CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Vancouver next month, after she was named to Team Canada’s roster on Tuesday. Canada and seven other CONCACAF nations will be competing for two available berths at the London 2012
Women’s Olympic Football Tournament. Group A features Canada, Costa Rica, Cuba and Haiti while Group B features USA, Mexico, Guatemala and Dominican Republic. The local goalkeeper is Canada’s most experienced player, having played internationally for Canada since 1998 at the age of 18. Now 31, LeBlanc to bring home Canada’s first Olympic medal in women’s soccer. “Every time we step on the field we
do it for our country and for games like these,” she said. LeBlanc is fresh off a stellar performance this past October at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, where she made the winning save in a 2-1 shootout win over Brazil, ensuring Canada its first ever gold medal in the tournament. LeBlanc was one of 20 players selected by head coach John Herdman to compete in the qualifying tournament
from Jan. 19 to 29, with all matches to be played at B.C. Place. “The team is very excited to show Canada what they can do in Vancouver,” said Herdman. “The players have been training for this chance to represent Canada and they are fully deserving of their selection.” Group stage matches will be held from Jan. 19 to 24, with Canada facing Haiti on Jan. 19. sports@mapleridgenews.com
Maple Ridge’s Madison Sands first star at B.C. midget AAA all-star game by R o b e r t M a n g e l s d o r f staff reporter Maple Ridge’s Madison Sands was named the first star at the B.C. Female Midget AAA Hockey League all-star game on Sunday after she scored the tying to send the game to overtime. Sands and her Team Blue won the game 3-2 over Team White in a shootout.
The majority of the game belonged to Team White, however, which took an early lead thanks to a goal by Miranda Pendergraft of the Thompson-Okanagan Rockets in the first period. Mckayla Yuris of the Kootenay Wildcats scored to put Team White up by two, and the game remained that way until late in the third period. Maple Ridge’s Payge Pena of the Fraser Valley Phantom got Team Blue on the board with seven minutes left
to play, bringing Team Blue to within one goal. Sands, also from the Fraser Valley Phantom, tied things up two and a half minute later to send the game to overtime. Team Blue eventually prevailed in the shootout, completing the unlikely comeback. Also playing in the game was Maple Ridge’s Emily Jude of the Vancouver Fusion, who played for Team White. In all, 40 players (12 defencemen, 24
forwards and four goaltenders) were selected from the province’s five female midget AAA teams. In addition to being named the first star at the all-star game, Sands is the B.C. Female Midget AAA Hockey League’s top blueliner, with 14 points in 15 games. Pena, a forward, has 13 points in 14 games, including 10 goals, while Jude has three goals in 12 games this year with the Fusion.

THE NEWS/home&gardening Last minute Christmas gift suggestions Y
ou may have already discovered this reality: when it comes to gardening gifts, passionate gardeners are very particular. So here are some suggesGardening tions that you Brian Minter might find helpful. There are so many great gardening books available today. It is well worth a browse in the gardening section of your favourite book store. Gardeners love quality books with great information and lots of coloured photographs. The Sunset Western Garden Book is probably one of the most useful. You might also consider a gift subscription to one of our excellent B.C. gardening magazines, like Gardens West or Gardenwise. At the high end of gardening gifts, a greenhouse is a present to be enjoyed for many years. My advice is to buy the best quality, which usually means aluminium and glass construction. Greenhouses are a great way to extend the growing season and a useful place for winter storage of less hardy plants and bulbs. The latest trend in Europe is a conservatory added to the home. It’s a wonderful way to bring the outside inside and makes an awesome living space. A less expensive alternative is a windowsill greenhouse, which, by the way, makes a perfect spot to grow almost anything. If your gardener has a greenhouse, accessories such as heating pads and cables, quality watering accessories, like the world famous English Hawes watering cans, and maximum-minimum thermometers are always appreciated. Attracting wildlife to gardens has also become quite a trend these days. Birdbaths and birdbath heaters,
Contributed
Viburnium pink dawn. feeders and bird houses are great gifts for children and shut-ins. Birding is the number two leisure activity in North America, and birding accessories are a nice present for those who enjoy this hobby. During winter cold spells, the birds would appreciate some help. There are a whole host of gardening gift ideas, such as quality tools,
gardeners’ soap, richly toned wind chimes and gardening videos. There are also ergonomically designed tools for easy of use. For those gardeners who are finding it a little more difficult to kneel down and get back up, handy kneelers, which double as a seat, are awesome. Complete gardening ‘wardrobes’
are available from gardening hats, gloves, aprons and footwear to knee pads and garden tool belts. A gift certificate to a favourite gardening store is also a valued treasure. Water in the garden is very popular these days, and everything from pre-formed ponds to pumps, fountains, filters, waterfalls and
LED underwater lights are huge hits as gifts. A ‘vanishing water’ feature, with water bubbling up through predrilled basalt stones, is the next big thing. A pump and kit that houses this beautiful patio feature makes a wonderful gift to be enjoyed for years. Research has revealed that of all the gifts people receive, flowers make folks the happiest. Long lasting and perfumed Christmas bouquets with seasonal fragrant greens are a real treat anytime over the Christmas season. Gardeners love plants best of all and there are some wonderful new hardy plants they can enjoy in the late fall and winter. ‘Bloomerang’ lilacs that bloom twice, winter blooming jasmine, viburnums and sasanqua camellias are fabulous. Peeling bark maples, coral bark maples and contorted filberts and willows are a joy in winter. ‘Pink Lemonade’ blueberries, the new haskap berries, figs and dwarf sour cherries will be the ‘hottie’ foods for 2012. By stepping out of the box a wee bit, there are some wonderful European garden tours out there, and Donna Dawson, at icangarden.com provides some of the very best. Garden makeovers are all the rage today, and a gift certificate from a quality garden designer is also a wonderful gift. Tickets to the Northwest Flower and Garden Show in Seattle, this Feb. 8-12 would be a treasured gift. Tickets can be purchased online. Tickets or season passes to some of our wonderful Lower Mainland or Vancouver Island gardens would also be a splendid idea. Most gardeners appreciate something unique and different. Quality and usefulness are perhaps the two most important criteria to keep in mind. I hope this helps. Brian Minter owns and operates Minter Gardens just outside of Chilliwack.
MERRY CHRISTMAS!
May the spirit of the season surround you this Christmas with love, laughter & merriment. With best wishes, we thank you for your continued support through the years.
