ig news events often portray the urgency of a situation and make for dynamic images. But the biggest news stories do not always make for the best photos. While everyday-events are often more challenging to photograph in a fresh way, the effort is well worth it, as the images in this issue will attest.
In the past year, News journalists Colleen Flanagan and James Mclennan, and a few others have drawn readers into the stories of our communities with their compelling photos. Thru the lens portrays a cross-section of events, from Ash Wednesday to Pitt Meadows Day, the Occupy Vancouver protest and that to save the elementary band program, from a visit by the premier, the demolition of Northumberland Court, high school football games, senior men’s lacrosse games, to the Rotary duck race and performances at The ACT. We were there to show you what happened. No we present the best of it all. We hope you enjoy the view.
Aaron Adams helps the lone occupant of a pickup who lost control of his vehicle while driving west along Dewdney Trunk Rd. and ended up in a ditch in March. Kaylyn Bell, her father Johnathan Peters, and sister Rhyly travelled from Maple Ridge to take part in the Occupy Vancouver protest outside the Vancouver Art Gallery in October.
Pitt Meadows student Rose Smith protests changes to the district’s elementary band program outside the school board office in May.
In The News
B.C. Premier Christy Clark visited former Maple Ridge mayor Gordy Robson’s Heather Hills Golf Course for a barbeque in September.
Maple Ridge firefighters carry out a scared little dog from a home at Wicklow Way and Dover Street after a kitchen fire in January. Madison Sherman looks for four-leafed-clovers in front of her home as Northumberland is torn down behind her in October.

LIKE ALL GOOD THINGS, RECYCLE YOUR RIDE MUST COME TO AN END. RECYCLE YOUR RIDE IS ON ALL ACROSS CANADA — ONLY UNTIL JANUARY 3RD AND ONLY AT YOUR FORD STORE.
Ford’s Recycle Your Ride program is a great incentive for consumers looking to save on their next vehicle while responsibly recycling their old one. Since the program was first offered in 2009, Ford’s Recycle Your Ride program has retired more than 50,000 old vehicles. And now, in an effort to recycle even more, the program has been expanded to include 2005-model-year-or-older vehicles. So even more people can receive between $500 and $3000* in incentives towards purchasing or leasing our smartest, safest and most fuel-efficient Ford vehicles — like the Focus, Fusion and F-150, and even the award-winning Fiesta and Edge. Our goal is to replace as many older vehicles still on the road today with more fuel-efficient, lower-emission Ford cars, CUVs, SUVs and trucks. And you can help. If it’s time to recycle your ride, just visit any Ford Store across the country. But hurry, because Recycle Your Ride is only back for a limited time.
