Vista Hills park is located at 2450 Mailand Road. It is approximately 14 acres and was completely upgraded in the 1990s featuring a variety of recreational amenities. The City of Maplewood seeks your thoughts on its Parks and Recreation System. The City is mid-way through the process of developing a plan that will guide investments over the next 20 years to parks, recreation facilities, trails, preserves, public art, and cultural and historic resources. The plan will assure that the system will meet community needs now and into the future.

What have we heard so far?

• Walking, hiking, and biking trails are the most used amenity (86%) • After trails, neighborhood parks are most important (61%) • Creating a destination park with city-wide amenities is the most important major addition to the system.

• Improvements to existing parks, preserves, and trails are a high priority for residents • There is a need to renovate older parks, including replacing older facilities, adding amenities, improving accessibility.

Flamenco: A Touch of Spain

SEPTEMBER 6 (7:30PM) $10.00/ADVANCE, $15.00 DAY OF SHOW Flamenco: A Touch of Spain is an exciting new music and dance ensemble dedicated to presenting the art of flamenco in its most authentic form and “Nuevo Flamenco,” which incorporates flute, sax, bass, percussion and guitar. Enjoy the flamenco musical styling of flamenco guitar virtuoso Michael Hauser, guitarist Dan Elsen, flutist and jazz artist Chuck Armstrong, and bass player Tom Dades.

Mu Daiko Drumming

SEPTEMBER 13 (7:30PM) $10.00/ADVANCE, $15.00 DAY OF SHOW Mu Daiko has attracted a loyal and expanding audience with its annual concerts and has been instrumental in bringing nationally-renowned taiko artists to the Twin Cities. Mu Daiko members have performed with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Chamber Music Society of Minnesota, around the state, and across the country. Mu Daiko performs a variety of traditional and contemporary works, ranging from traditional taiko repertoire to original pieces composed by its members.

Ring Of Kerry

SEPTEMBER 27 (7:30PM) $15.00/ADVANCE, $20.00 DAY OF SHOW Ring of Kerry is a bursting-with-energy Irish music group that captures the hearts of listeners. All five of its engaging musicians sing and play several instruments. With sounds that range from the thunder of the Irish bodhran drum to the sparkle of the hammered dulcimer; from the lilt and rhythm of fiddle and guitar to the haunting wails of flutes and pennywhistles, the band has developed a blend that is animated, ruggedly beautiful and fun.

Al Bahira Dance Theatre

Maplewood Community Center Amenities FITNESS CENTER Maplewood Community Center’s newly renovated fitness center offers state of the art cardiovascular and strength equipment. Our wide variety of cardio machines includes treadmills, elliptical cross-trainers, step mills, summit trainers, stationary bikes, stair climbers and rowers. Most machines have an entertainment system, allowing you to watch television or use your iPod during your workout. We also offer weight training equipment to work every part of your body. A certified fitness professional can provide initial and ongoing instruction on how to use the equipment to meet your goals.

GROUP FITNESS Enjoy access to over 80 complimentary group exercise classes every week! Classes are held in our two studio spaces, the spinning room, the lap pool and the gym. The broad range of formats includes spinning, kickboxing, muscle madness, yoga, Pilates, and many others. Be sure to try our newest program, PiYo or Insanity! Intensities range from calm to exceptionally rigorous, so classes can be enjoyed by members of all ages and fitness levels.

WALKING/JOGGING TRACK Rain or shine, take a walk around Maplewood Community Center’s indoor track. This suspended track is 1/11 of a mile long with three spacious lanes for walkers and runners.

AQUATIC CENTER Thrilling family fun and fitness adventures await you. This fabulous aquatic center features a 6-lane lap pool, an interactive leisure pool (zero-depth), a 120-foot twirling water slide, and a soothing hot tub. A jaunty, interactive submarine takes center stage in the zero-depth entry leisure pool allowing children to climb inside the access hatch, slide out the turbo prop, or take a seat at the submarine’s control console. Children can peer through the interactive periscope, play with pressure activated sprayers and floor geysers, or use the submarine’s control panel to push button activate the sub’s roof-top spray guns. Murals of the coral reef and other underwater wonders grace the walls of the facility.

GYM Bring a group of friends and challenge them to a game of basketball, volleyball, pickle ball, floor hockey or badminton. A variety of other fun gym activities are available and posted on the monthly gym schedule.

RACQUETBALL/WALLYBALL Maplewood Community Center has a variety of options for those that enjoy playing racquetball or wallyball. Visit the bulletin board for leagues, or call 651.249.2210 to reserve a court.

In the land of 10,000 lakes learning how to swim is especially important! Which is why, here at the Maplewood Community Center, we are celebrating 20 years of providing high quality community swim lessons at a fraction of the price of private organizations. Our goal is to teach children that water is not something to be feared, but rather respected. By giving them the skills they need to enjoy water safely and helping them to understand their limits, we’ll teach your children to swim, splash, and play in a safe way.

Our environment is another one of our keys to success. Our fun and interactive zero-depth leisure pool provides the perfect water environment for beginning swimmers. Kept at a comfortable temperature of 86-degrees and with a maximum depth of just four-feet, our versatile leisure pool allows instructors to safely challenge beginning swimmers. Take advantage of our experience today and register for one of our more than 100 class offerings.

WATER SAFETY AIDE (AGE 10+)

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 9:00AM - 2:00PM We now offer FREE training to individuals 10 and older who have completed Red Cross Swim Level 4 and are interested in being a volunteer aide for the MCC or ISD 622 swim lessons program.

FLOTATION DAYS

FREE FOR MEMBERS. COST OF DAILY ADMISSION FOR NON-MEMBERS Come jump, splash, float, and slide. The Inflatable Magic Island, beach balls, tubes, and almost everything the MCC has that floats will be available in the pool for everyone to enjoy. Bring your friends and family!

ADULT ONLY SWIM TIME We now offer “Adult Only” swim times on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:00-3:00 pm. No one under the age of 18 will be allowed in the lap pool during these times.

Adult non-members can pay the very low admission rate of $3 + Tax on Tuesday and Thursdays from 1:00-3:00 pm. Some exceptions apply. Check the monthly pool schedule for specific dates and exceptions.

Maplewood lifeguards and water safety instructors are certified by the American Red Cross and participate in regular in-service training and updates.

AT MAPLEWOOD COMMUNITY CENTER New at the MCC this fall is Aerialates® body leverage training. Aerialates® is described as a dynamic exercise that combines the aerial arts with Pilates, challenging and inspiring the body and spirit. This artistic movement incorporates Pilates techniques while suspended, using trapeze or fabric for support. According to aerialates.com, the AERIALATES® brand of aerial pilates is designed to do the following: • Strengthen the entire body through Pilates exercises and techniques used by circus and aerial performers • Challenge the body in ways unavailable with standard Pilates equipment • Inspire the spirit to think creatively and imagine new possibilities • Teach the heart to trust oneself and others The MCC will be offering Personal Aerialates® training and Cirque-It® small group classes for 2-6 participants. A Pilates Reformer is elegant, spring-based resistance equipment that allows one to work very precisely, developing strength and flexibility. Insanity

You’ve seen it on TV, now experience it for yourself. A cardiobased, total body-conditioning program. This calorie torching, shirt-soaking workout is based on the principles of MAX interval training. Plyometric drills with nonstop intervals of strength, power, resistance and core training moves – INSANITY. Yoga Light

A gentle yoga class that incorporates breathing exercises with restorative and gentle stretching. This class systematically builds on the elements of yoga that include asanas, breathing, relaxation, meditation, and positive thinking. Yoga

Yoga at the MCC is a dynamic class of consistent poses in flowing transition with a focus on core strength, cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, and an overall sense of well-being. We will build upon basic yoga poses to target specific muscle groups while maintaining safe alignment to reduce the risk of injury.

Join teams from Maplewood, Little Canada, Stillwater, Oakdale, Mahtomedi, and White Bear Lake for a fun, yet competitive league. Games are played Saturday mornings and afternoons with one practice during the week.

The season concludes with an all day tournament (November 8) at the Maplewood Community Center, Carver Community Gym, and Edgerton Community Gym. This is a recreational league - the emphasis is on good sportsmanship and fun! Volunteer coaches are needed. Registration deadline is September 12.

AT ST. CROIX OFF BROADWAY JANUARY 3, 12:00PM Set in a North Woods bar in Bunyan Bay, Minnesota, plans are on tap for a double wedding.

Before the nuptials transpire though, we’ll have to deal with two un-Hallmark proposals, a stag and stagette party, uber-mosquitoes, a gigantic hangover, a scary forest ranger, a rapping minister, and the dreaded wedding dress. One small hitch before the hitchings, they can’t find anyone who will pay for the wedding. And who is getting married to whom? The answer will surprise, shock, and tickle Don’t Hug Me audiences. Will anyone get cold feet? Would someone try to derail the wedding?

What could possibly go wrong? A lot. Rest assured, nothing will go as wedding-planned in Bunyan Bay. Big Woods; Big Rivers: Become a Volunteer Master Naturalist (Adults)

AT MAPLEWOOD NATURE CENTER WEDNESDAYS & FRIDAYS, SEPTEMBER 10 - OCTOBER 17, 9:30AM - 12:00PM Participants will learn about the natural history of the Big Woods; Big Rivers biome, specifically the maple-basswood forests along the St. Croix River and the Mesic Oak Woods of the east metropolitan area. We’ll learn techniques for teaching others, including children, about our natural world. Topics to be covered include: geology, ecology, human impacts, water quality, and how to be a Master Naturalist. Classes will include outdoor activities, classroom activities, Powerpoints, and field trips. Capstone projects will be focused on City of Maplewood Open Space sites, and the Maplewood Nature Center.

Course is two days a week, Wednesday and Friday, starting Sept 10 and ending on October 17. Includes two 8 hour field trips on Saturday, September 13 and October 11. Field trips will be to some unique remnants of Mesic Oak Woods, as well as unique sites along the St. Croix River. Cost is $200.00 payable to Minnesota Master Naturalists.
