RECYCLING IN THE PARKS

In an effort to reduce trash and promote recycling, the City of Maplewood now offers recycling in our parks. Look for the blue bins and do your part in helping keep our parks clean!

Maplewood maintains ten skating rinks throughout the city, four of which have supervised warming houses. Warming houses will not be open when temperatures are -10° or the windchill reaches -20°. Warming houses will also be closed until the rinks are cleared following snow, and when warm temperatures soften the ice. Call the weather information hotline for closure details: 651-249-2190.

Warming houses are scheduled to be open December 26 - February 10 (weather permitting). Warming houses will be closed December 31 and January 1.

COMMUNITY GYM PARTY PACKAGES

Looking for somewhere to have a party or just get together with friends for some fun? We offer partygoers equipment to play volleyball, basketball, soccer, floor hockey, football, and other activities. Have a game or activity that you would like to play? Bring it with! Must be approved by gym monitor. This is a great option for adult outings, family gatherings, birthday parties, and more! For parties, we allow light decorating of the area during your scheduled rental time and we’ll have tables set up when you arrive for gifts, cake or pizza, and have the gym ready for fun. Call 651-249-2121 to book or to ask any questions. *Rental requests must be made at least 10 days prior to the 1st of the month in which the rental will take place. (Example: a rental request for October must be made no later than September 20)*

A hidden gem in south Maplewood! This park boasts a unique picnic shelter as well as a playground. This is the perfect place to visit if you’re looking to enjoy a picnic and some play time. Adjacent to Applewood Park is Applewood Preserve, where you’ll be greeted by rolling hills, a pasture dotted with gnarled apple trees, and grand vistas. In spring you may be lucky enough to catch the apples blooming in the pasture and the rue anemone blooming in the oak woods. Summer is abuzz with the scratch and hum of insects and baby ducks splashing on the pond. Fall is spectacular with the goldenrod, a brilliant companion for the deep reds of the sumac.

Deer are plentiful and may beat you to the apple harvest.

MAPLEWOOD PICNIC SHELTERS

The City of Maplewood has picnic facilities at several of our parks. There is a fee, and some shelters require a $100.00 damage deposit to reserve the shelter. Picnic shelters not listed are a “first come, first served” shelter for regular usage by patrons. This does not apply to large organized events.

Outside rentals of bounce houses, etc. require additional permits and the purchase of liability insurance. For a full list of reservable shelters, please visit www.maplewoodmn.gov/pr and select picnic shelters.

FALL SOCCER LEAGUE AT HAZELWOOD PARK REGISTRATION EXTENDED TO AUGUST 9TH Maplewood Parks and Recreation is working with North East United Soccer Club (NEU) to offer a Fall co-ed recreational soccer league. In this introductory league, teams will have one practice and one game per week making this a great option for a busy family. Participants will have the opportunity to work with our local NEU soccer club coaches. This partnership provides quality coaching to not only the kids but also the parent volunteer coaches for their teams. Call 651.249.2111 to register.

The kids will have fun learning basic tennis skills and hand-eye coordination. Lightweight rackets and smaller nets are provided. Parents should bring their own racket.

BIG STARS (AGES 7-9) • SATURDAYS, 9:45AM - 10:30AM SEPTEMBER 8 - OCTOBER 13 (MAPLEWOOD HEIGHTS) Participants will learn all of the basic tennis strokes: serve, volley, and groundstrokes. Lively drills will keep the class fast moving and loads of fun!

Lightweight rackets are provided.

AT HAZELWOOD PARK FIELD 1 MONDAYS, SEPTEMBER 10 - OCTOBER 15 OR WEDNESDAYS, SEPTEMBER 12 - OCTOBER 17 *Kids will be split between Mondays & Wednesdays* Maplewood Parks & Recreation is proud to offer our co-rec youth soccer starter program. The 3v3 format for ages 4-6, and 4v4 format for ages 7-9, will provide for more touches, increased playing time, and most important more fun! This program is six weeks in length and will be played Mondays or Wednesdays with the groups being split between the days. The sessions will be a combination of skill development/instruction and game play. An adult volunteer will be needed for each team. Cost is $65.00. Register by August 24.

AT WOODLOCK STABLES (HUGO, MN) AUGUST 14 - AUGUST 16, 9:00AM - 12:30PM This camp is geared for younger riders of all skill levels. Campers will participate in grooming, tacking, and riding each day. Campers depart the Maplewood Community Center/YMCA at 9:00AM and return at approximately 12:30PM. Cost is $160.00. Space is limited. Register early!

LIL’ SLUGGERS PRESCHOOL BASEBALL/SOFTBALL CLINIC (AGES 2-5)

AT PLAYCREST PARK THURSDAYS, SEPTEMBER 13 - OCTOBER 4 Hit, run, and throw your way into fun with Lil’ Sluggers! Lil’ Sluggers is a nationwide company that teaches the fundamental skills of baseball and softball to the littlest athletes in a fun and positive environment. The program is designed to prepare the littlest athletes into their journey of organized team play by improving and developing their social and physical skills both on and off the field. Sluggers will learn how to throw, field, catch, hit, and run the bases. Program will build upon the skills learned in previous sessions. Cost is $50.00.

YOUTH BASKETBALL LEAGUES (BOYS & GIRLS IN GRADES 3-8)

AT VARIOUS SCHOOL LOCATIONS IN VARIOUS COMMUNITIES SATURDAYS, DECEMBER 1 - MARCH 2 This recreational program is for girls and boys grades 3-8 (as of the 2018-2019 school year) and is designed to provide all participants with an opportunity to have fun, learn basic basketball skills, and learn how to play as a team. Boys and girls will play in separate leagues according to their grade level. Teams will play other teams from Little Canada, Oakdale, Mendota Heights, Cottage Grove, Stillwater, White Bear Lake, Mahtomedi, and more! The 3rd and 4th grade division will play their games with 9-foot baskets to provide a positive and rewarding experience for the participants while the 5th-8th grade division will use regulation 10-foot baskets. Games are played Saturday mornings and afternoons beginning in early December and concluding in early March. Teams will have one practice night per week during the season. Teams will begin practice in November. Cost is $135.00.

SENIOR HIGH REC BASKETBALL (BOYS & GIRLS IN GRADES 9-12)

AT EDGERTON AND CARVER COMMUNITY GYMS AND WHITE BEAR LAKE SOUTH CAMPUS SUNDAYS, JANUARY 6 - MARCH 3, 11:00AM - 6:00PM Maplewood Parks and Recreation, in cooperation with White Bear Public Schools Community Services and Recreation Department, is offering a Senior High Basketball League. All players must be in high school. Each team must have a parent who is on the bench at each game. All rosters must be handed in one week prior to the team’s first game. Fee includes jersey, scorekeeper, and refereed games. Registration is taken as a full team so grab some friends and sign up your team. Players on a Varsity, Junior Varsity, or B Squad basketball team are not eligible to play in this league. Team fee is $575.00.

TUMBLING TOTS CLASS OPTIONS (PARENT/CHILD) TOTS 1 - INTRO

This class is for children ages 9 months - 2 years, who have little to no experience in tumbling. This class will include log rolls, forward rolls, climbing, crawling, running and jumping. Equipment will consist of small beams, low bars, mats, and foam courses. Parent participation required.

TOTS 2 - BEGINNER

This class is for children ages 2 - 4 years. This class will include forward and backwards rolls, handstands, cartwheels, building skills with balance, crawling, running and jumping. Equipment will consist of low and high beams, low bars, mats, and foam courses.

Moderate parent participation required.

HOW CAN I SUPPORT MAPLEWOOD PARKS & REC? ADOPT - A- PARK

The goal of the Adopt-A-Park Program is to provide an opportunity for interested parties to take part in maintaining our parks system. Providing this opportunity not only encourages and promotes community involvement, but also allows us to beautify and improve our parks. All Adopt-A-Park projects should aim towards benefiting the majority of park users. This opportunity is available to any individual, family, resident, group organization, or business that is eager to help beautify our parks. The Adopt-A-Park commitment period is from April 1 – October 31. Applications are accepted throughout the year and require a minimum of once a month dedication.

ADULT ATHLETIC SIGN SPONSORSHIP

The adult athletic sign sponsorship is a unique marketing opportunity for local businesses. Maplewood Parks & Recreation has started an outfield sign program at Veteran’s Memorial Park (formerly Goodrich). This is an opportunity to purchase one, two, or three 4’ x 8’ outfield signs that are visible from the softball fields as well as North St. Paul Road. Veteran’s Memorial Park houses the entire adult softball program (summer, fall and late fall leagues) and hosts multiple youth tournaments throughout the season. The funds from these sponsorships will go directly to maintaining and upgrading this facility, keeping the fields suitable for the high level of play they receive.

This non-profit organization works to promote, support and enhance the growth of the Maplewood Nature Center and Neighborhood Preserves. You can support Friends of Maplewood Nature with your membership fees, 1-time-donations, purchase of Neighborhood Preserve Calendars, by participating in the Photo Contest, or volunteering on the Friends Board!

YOUTH SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The Youth Scholarship Fund serves Maplewood residents (under 18 years) who demonstrate a financial need and may not otherwise have the opportunity to participate in recreation programs. Qualifying families are asked to pay 1/3 of the program fee and the scholarship fund covers the remaining 2/3 of the fee. Sponsorship of our scholarship program is a great way to show your support for Maplewood Parks & Recreation and the community. Your contribution will make a huge difference in the lives of our participants and enable them to build a positive and healthy lifestyle through recreational programming. JOHNSON COMO NORTH ST. PAUL HOCKEY ASSOCIATION (JCNSP)

The mission of the Johnson Como North St. Paul Hockey Association (JCNSP) is to empower all players with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes for success through the principles of fair play and good sportsmanship in the game of hockey. This program’s goal is to form a competitive hockey association that will host traveling hockey teams. To accomplish this mission, the coaches will emphasize individual player skills and team skills, in an environment in which youth players can learn the basic skills and rules of ice hockey, master these skills and have fun while developing a lifelong interest in hockey.

Jr. Polar Football is a volunteer youth sports organization committed to building teamwork, understanding the fundamentals of the game, developing skills, encouraging sportsmanship and most importantly having fun playing football. The program is open to residents that live within or attend school (public or private) within the geographic boundary of North St. Paul - Maplewood Oakdale and is part of the North St. Paul Athletic Association. The football program is open to all youth. The goal of the football program is to encourage sportsmanship and to teach the fundamentals of football. Flag Football is available to boys & girls entering Kindergarten up to 2nd grade. Tackle football begins in 3rd grade and continues through 8th grade.

MAPLEWOOD AREA HISTORICAL SOCIETY

The Maplewood Area Historical Society and the Bruentrup Heritage Farm is located on 2.5 acres of land with nine buildings that date back to 1891. It is surrounded on two sides by a 22-acre prairie maintained as open space by the City of Maplewood. The Farm is used for public events and exhibits and can be rented for private events such as weddings. It is our mission to promote, provide and teach soccer in the “Spirit of the Game.” FUN, FAIRNESS and SAFETY. We provide traveling soccer for players; boys and girls ages 9-19. We try to provide the best competition for all players at their level of play.

NORTH POLARS FASTPITCH

The North Polars Fastpitch Association (NPFA) is a non-profit organization established to foster the girl’s fastpitch softball program in the area of Independent School District 622, which is within the boundaries of North St. Paul High School. This includes all or portions of the communities of North St. Paul, Maplewood, Lake Elmo and Oakdale. The association exists to fulfill the girl’s fastpitch softball needs of the community and is the primary advocate of the traveling program. The association supports good sportsmanship and the sound development of softball fundamentals within the community, to ensure that girls participating in the program will have a positive and rewarding experience that will maximize personal and team growth. The association requires quality coaching and provides an atmosphere for learning softball skills for both coaches and players. The association sponsors membership in appropriate leagues to encourage quality competition.
