RECYCLING IN THE PARKS

In an effort to reduce trash and promote recycling, the City of Maplewood now offers recycling in our parks. Look for the blue bins and do your part in helping keep our parks clean!

The City of Maplewood has picnic facilities at several of our parks.

There is a fee, and some shelters require a $100.00 damage deposit to reserve the shelter. Picnic shelters not listed are a “first come, first served” shelter for regular usage by patrons. This does not apply to large organized events. Outside rentals of bounce houses, etc. require additional permits and the purchase of liability insurance.

•Contact recreationonline@maplewoodmn.gov or call 651.249.2120 for availability and to reserve a shelter. Details to include in the request: name of the shelter you are interested in, event date and time, number of attendees, and the intended use of the shelter.

•Fees are due at the time of reservation and are required to reserve the picnic shelter. Cash, check, Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express credit cards are accepted.

•The shelter permit and building key (if applicable) must be picked up the business day before the rental date and returned to the Maplewood Parks & Recreation Department the following business day. Park buildings and shelters are limited to use by rental applicant and party only.

•Damage deposit is due at the time the rental permit is issued.

Damage deposit check should be written out to Maplewood Parks & Recreation. The damage deposit will be forfeited if damage is done to the interior of the park building and/or the key is not returned on the following business day after the rental.

•Place all trash in appropriate trash receptacles. We offer recycling in our parks! Please recycle your cans and bottles in an effort to reduce waste and protect the environment. Additional trash and recycling containers are available with an advance request.

CANCELLATION POLICY

No cancellations due to inclement weather. All other cancellations must be received four weeks prior to rental.

Organized tournaments and food sales are not allowed in our parks without prior approval and obtaining proper permits.

AT WAKEFIELD PARK COMMUNITY BUILDING SATURDAY, APRIL 27 The Maplewood Parks & Recreation Commission invites you to participate in our annual spring clean up. Please consider donating a few hours to spruce up our parks while meeting other people in the community. Cleanup materials (bags and gloves) along with coffee and snacks will be available from 8:00AM – 10:00AM. For further information contact: audra.robbins@maplewoodmn.gov

Maplewood’s newest playground is located in Maplecrest Park. The design for this playground was unanimously chosen by residents at a neighborhood meeting last fall and the project was completed in November of 2018. This is Maplewood’s second Biba Smart Playground where visitors can download an app for added play value and interactive fun!

ADOPT A PARK

The goal of the Adopt-A-Park Program is to provide an opportunity for interested parties to take part in maintaining our parks system. By providing this opportunity it not only encourages and promotes community involvement but also allows us to beautify and improve our parks.

All Adopt-A-Park projects should aim towards benefiting the majority of park users.

COMMUNITY GYM PARTY PACKAGES

Looking for somewhere to have a party or just get together with friends for some fun? We offer partygoers equipment to play volleyball, basketball, soccer, floor hockey, football, and other activities. Have a game or activity that you would like to play? Bring it with! Must be approved by gym monitor. This is a great option for adult outings, family gatherings, birthday parties, and more! For parties we allow light decorating of the area during your scheduled rental time and we’ll have tables set up when you arrive for gifts, cake or pizza and have the gym ready for fun. Call 651.249.2121 to book or to ask any questions. *Rental requests must be made at least 10 days prior to the 1st of the month in which the rental will take place. (Example: a rental request for April must be made no later than March 20)*

WHO? Any individual, family, resident, group organization, or business who is eager to help beautify our parks.

WHEN? Adoption commitment period is between April 1 and October 31.

However, applications are taken all throughout the year. Park clean-up can be done as often as you choose, but we require a minimum of once a month dedication. After a 60 day probationary period, Maplewood Parks & Recreation will display a recognition sign for the volunteer(s) or volunteer group to be displayed at the park of their choice.

WHAT? There are a number of services that you can provide for our parks including: picking up litter, piling up branches, raking leaves, cleaning play equipment, maintaining flowerbeds, and more! If you have any other ideas or special projects that you’d like to initiate, please check with the Parks and Recreation Department.

WHY? Maplewood is filled with wonderful and delicate natural resources which can be protected with a little attention. In addition, litter and other debris is unsightly and deflects from the natural aesthetics of our neighborhoods and beautiful parks.

We would love your help maintaining our parks. If you’re ready to make a difference, please call Parks & Recreation at 651.249.2120. If you have a particular park that you’d love to adopt, that’s great! If not, and you would still like to help, we would be happy to find the perfect park for you.

Mark your calendars for our annual Easter Egg Hunt! We will start our morning off with breakfast treats, colorful crafts and a visit from the Easter Bunny - then its happy hunting! Sluggers will learn how to throw, field, catch, hit, and run the bases. Program will build upon the skills learned in previous sessions.

TUMBLING TOTS CLASS OPTIONS TOTS 1 - INTRO

This class is for children ages 9 months - 2 years, who have little to no experience in tumbling. This class will include log rolls, forward rolls, climbing, crawling, running and jumping. Equipment will consist of small beams, low bars, mats, and foam courses. Parent participation required.

TOTS 2 - BEGINNER

This class is for children ages 2 - 4 years. This class will include forward and backwards rolls, handstands, cartwheels, building skills with balance, crawling, running and jumping. Equipment will consist of low and high beams, low bars, mats, and foam courses. Moderate parent participation required.

TOTS 3 - ADVANCED

This class is for children ages 3 - 5 years. This class will teach the skills that enable increasing flexibility, and prepare them for the Gymnastics program. We perform splits & bridges, handstands & cartwheels, and build on skills with running and jumping. Equipment will consist of high beams, low and high bars, mats, and intermediate foam courses. Light parent participation required.

Spring Soccer Co-Rec Soccer Starter Program For Ages 4-9

The 3v3 format for ages 4-6, and 4v4 format for ages 7-9 will provide for more touches, increased playing time, and most important, more fun! This program is six weeks long and will be played Tuesdays or Thursdays with the groups split between the two days.

Sessions will be a combination of skill development/instruction and game play. *An adult volunteer will be needed for each team.*

YOUTH RECREATION

T-BALL (AGES 4-8)

AT EDGERTON AND AFTON FIELDS (possibly other various parks based on need) SUNDAYS, JUNE 9 - JULY 28 4 - 5 YEARS: Always hit off a tee 6 - 8 YEARS: Opportunity to hit coach pitch, then hit off a tee Cost is $65.00 The t-ball program is designed to teach the fundamentals of baseball to girls and boys. We work with Lil’ Sluggers, who provide a field coach for each game and emphasize individual growth, cooperation, fair play and having fun! The ages are split to provide better program tailoring for more progressive skill development along the way. All games are played as controlled scrimmages, no score is kept, and we use a ball designed for safety and confidence.

There will be 20-25 minutes of practice time led by the Lil’ Sluggers coach with each team’s parent coach(s) working with their team, followed by 40-45 minutes of game play. During the game play, the Lil’ Sluggers coach will help with proper positioning, encouragement and general game help. The parent coaches will still set the lineup, manage the players’ position, play time and rotation, base coaching etc.

BOYS AND GIRLS YOUTH BASEBALL (GRADES 2 - 5)

AT FIELDS IN MAPLEWOOD, ROSEVILLE AND LITTLE CANADA Maplewood Parks & Recreation is offering baseball for boys and girls in 2nd - 3rd (C League) and 4th - 5th (B League) with teams from Roseville and Little Canada. These leagues are recreational and instructional with the goal of ensuring that the kids have fun while improving their baseball skills.

INCLUDED WITH REGISTRATION : Team shirt and hat; each team will have some bats and batting helmets PLAYER EQUIPMENT NEEDED: Fielder’s glove, protective cup, batting gloves (optional), rubber baseball cleats (optional), personal batting helmet (optional but encouraged) Both leagues will need volunteer coaches for their teams. If interested in volunteer coaching, please indicate so during the registration process or contact the League Director.

C LEAGUE BASEBALL: 2nd - 3rd Grades The C League is for current 2nd and 3rd graders. The C League utilizes pitching machines to induce more playable balls in the field and to develop player batting skills.

B LEAGUE BASEBALL: 4th - 5th Grades The B League is for current 4th and 5th graders. The B League is the introduction to kid-pitch baseball. All kids, once they have established the ability to hit the strike zone, will have an opportunity to pitch if they choose to do so. There is typically an end of season tournament the week after the 4th of July.

AT VARIOUS FIELDS IN MAPLEWOOD, WHITE BEAR LAKE, AND LITTLE CANADA League start and registration dates differ based on leagues so please note the start dates of the leagues below.

These leagues are a great way to learn the game of softball and make friends while getting outdoors. All leagues will conclude with a season ending tourney. Grades are based on current school year. Cost: $80.00 (all leagues) All leagues will need volunteer coaches for their teams. Wish Upon a Ballet is a dance program for children that incorporates popular children’s stories as well as ballet stories to create a dance class that is more than ballet steps. Using musical instruments, parachutes, and scarves we will create a complete fairy tale experience while we skip, leap, jump and spin. This way, an introduction to the movements and vocabulary of ballet are taught in a fun and creative manner. Children will learn an appreciation of dance and music while developing strength and flexibility. Parents, family, and friends will be invited to observe a special performance at the end of each session. Come join the fun! Girls and boys will need ballet shoes. Try three different strategies to increase seed germination; then bring seeds home for your yard. We will recommend reference materials to help you imitate nature! In addition, replacing turf with these native grasses and wildflowers reduce geese problems. In this class, learn to identify 10 workhorse plants and the pollinators that depend on them. Dramatic research on the ability of raingardens to help prevent run-off will be shared. Take home some initial designs that will work in most sunny spots.

Approaches are relevant to gardeners, landscapers, natural resource professionals, and anyone interested in taking the next step in supporting pollinators. HOW CAN I SUPPORT MAPLEWOOD PARKS & REC? ADOPT - A- PARK

The goal of the Adopt-A-Park Program is to provide an opportunity for interested parties to take part in maintaining our parks system. Providing this opportunity not only encourages and promotes community involvement, but also allows us to beautify and improve our parks. All Adopt-A-Park projects should aim towards benefiting the majority of park users. This opportunity is available to any individual, family, resident, group organization, or business that is eager to help beautify our parks. The Adopt-A-Park commitment period is from April 1 – October 31. Applications are accepted throughout the year and require a minimum of once a month dedication.

ADULT ATHLETIC SIGN SPONSORSHIP

The adult athletic sign sponsorship is a unique marketing opportunity for local businesses. Maplewood Parks & Recreation has started an outfield sign program at Veteran’s Memorial Park (formerly Goodrich). This is an opportunity to purchase one, two, or three 4’ x 8’ outfield signs that are visible from the softball fields as well as North St. Paul Road. Veteran’s Memorial Park houses the entire adult softball program (summer, fall and late fall leagues) and hosts multiple youth tournaments throughout the season. The funds from these sponsorships will go directly to maintaining and upgrading this facility, keeping the fields suitable for the high level of play they receive.

This non-profit organization works to promote, support and enhance the growth of the Maplewood Nature Center and Neighborhood Preserves. YOUTH SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The Youth Scholarship Fund serves Maplewood residents (under 18 years) who demonstrate a financial need and may not otherwise have the opportunity to participate in recreation programs. Qualifying families are asked to pay 1/3 of the program fee and the scholarship fund covers the remaining 2/3 of the fee. Sponsorship of our scholarship program is a great way to show your support for Maplewood Parks & Recreation and the community. The mission of the Johnson Como North St. Paul Hockey Association (JCNSP) is to empower all players with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes for success through the principles of fair play and good sportsmanship in the game of hockey. This program’s goal is to form a competitive hockey association that will host traveling hockey teams. Jr. Polar Football is a volunteer youth sports organization committed to building teamwork, understanding the fundamentals of the game, developing skills, encouraging sportsmanship, and most importantly having fun playing football. The Maplewood Area Historical Society and the Bruentrup Heritage Farm is located on 2.5 acres of land with nine buildings that date back to 1891. It is surrounded on two sides by a 22-acre prairie maintained as open space by the City of Maplewood. The North Polars Fastpitch Association (NPFA) is a non-profit organization established to foster the girl’s fastpitch softball program in the area of Independent School District 622, which is within the boundaries of North St. Paul High School. This includes all or portions of the communities of North St. Paul, Maplewood, Lake Elmo and Oakdale. The association exists to fulfill the girl’s fastpitch softball needs of the community and is the primary advocate of the traveling program. The association supports good sportsmanship and the sound development of softball fundamentals within the community, to ensure that girls participating in the program will have a positive and rewarding experience that will maximize personal and team growth. The association requires quality coaching and provides an atmosphere for learning softball skills for both coaches and players. The association sponsors membership in appropriate leagues to encourage quality competition.

YouthBaseball Various Fields in Maplewood, Roseville and Little Canada Practices: start mid/late April (weather permitting) Games: start late April

C League: for current 2nd and 3rd graders, utilizes pitching machines to induce more playable balls in the field and to develop player batting skills.

Games: Mondays & Wednesdays at 6:15PM Cost: $90 B League: for current 4th and 5th graders, an introduction to kid-pitch baseball. All kids, once they have established the ability to hit the strike zone, will have an opportunity to pitch if they choose to do so.

Spring Soccer Co-Rec Soccer Starter Program For Ages 4-9
