Mike Johnson is our Photo Scavenger Hunt Winner for 2017!

Mike and his family visited various parks throughout the City of Maplewood and took pictures at each site. Mike’s photos are featured on the front cover of this brochure as well as the inside cover. Mike works for the MN Department of Transportation as a Program Supervisor. In his free time he enjoys flying, taking pictures with his drone, and inspiring kids by implementing and supporting diverse aerospace-related STEM education programs.

WINTER SKATING RINKS & WARMING HOUSES

Maplewood maintains nine skating rinks throughout the city, four of which have supervised shelters. Shelters will not be open when temperatures are -10° or the windchill reaches -25°. Shelters will also be closed until the rinks are cleared following snow, and when warm temperatures soften the ice. Call the weather information hotline for closure details: 651-249-2190. Warming houses are scheduled to be open December 26 - February 11 (weather permitting). Warming houses will be closed December 31 and January 1.

YOUTH VOLLEYBALL CLINIC (AGES 6-14)

AT CARVER ELEMENTARY COMMUNITY GYM TUESDAYS, NOVEMBER 14 - DECEMBER 19 Get your volleyball game on! Experienced, enthusiastic, and excited coaches are waiting for your young player to hit the courts. Players will establish better skills in passing, setting, hitting and learn good court movement. Mini games are held at each session. Players are encouraged to ask questions. Knee pads are required. Cost is $55.00.

ADVANCED VOLLEYBALL CLINIC (AGES 6-14)

AT CARVER ELEMENTARY COMMUNITY GYM TUESDAYS, JANUARY 16 - FEBRUARY 27 (NO CLASS FEBRUARY 20) The advanced volleyball clinic will improve a player’s all-around game. Not only will players train in all volleyball skills, but also their volleyball knowledge of real game situations to help prepare them to play in a team setting. If your child has completed one of our beginner clinics this is the next step in the volleyball skills progression. Prerequisite: - Have attended a minimum of three Maplewood Parks & Rec Volleyball Clinic programs in the past, or a tryout may be used in certain cases.

Knee pads are required. Cost is $55.00.

AT CARVER ELEMENTARY COMMUNITY GYM THURSDAYS, JANUARY 18 - MARCH 8 (NO CLASS FEBRUARY 15 & 22) Come learn the basics of floor hockey. This clinic is a great way to fine tune your floor hockey skills just before the floor hockey league gets underway. Learn the basics of passing, shooting, and teamwork through drills and fun mini games. Players will also learn how to play every position. Cost is $55.00, *Clinic T-shirt included.

Class options build upon each other. If your child fits into multiple age classes and you are unsure of what class to register them for, register them for the lower class.

TUMBLING TOTS CLASS OPTIONS TOTS 1 - INTRO

This class is for children ages 9 months - 3 years, who have little to no experience in tumbling. This class will include log rolls, forward rolls, climbing, crawling, running and jumping. Equipment will consist of small beams, low bars, mats, and foam courses.

TOTS 2 - BEGINNER

This class is for children ages 2 - 4 years. This class will include forward and backwards rolls, handstands, cartwheels, building skills with balance, crawling, running and jumping. Equipment will consist of low and high beams, low bars, mats, and foam courses.

TOTS 3 - ADVANCED

This class is for children ages 3 - 5 years. This class will teach the skills that enable increasing flexibility, and prepare them for the Gymnastics program. We perform splits & bridges, handstands & cartwheels, and build on skills with running and jumping.

Equipment will consist of high beams, low and high bars, mats, and intermediate foam courses.

GYMNASTICS CLASS OPTIONS GYMNASTICS 1 - INTRO

This class is for children ages 4 - 6 years. This structured class will include somersaults, cartwheels, intro to back and front walkovers and increasing flexibility. Equipment will consist of small beams, low bars, mats, and foam courses.

YOUTH BASKETBALL LEAGUE (BOYS & GIRLS IN GRADES 3-8)

AT VARIOUS SCHOOL LOCATIONS IN VARIOUS COMMUNITIES SATURDAYS, DECEMBER 2 - MARCH 3 This recreational program is for girls and boys grades 3-8 (as of the 2017-2018 school year) and is designed to provide all participants with an opportunity to have fun, learn basic basketball skills, and learn how to play as a team. Boys and girls will play in separate leagues according to their grade level. Teams will play other teams from Little Canada, Oakdale, Mendota Heights, Cottage Grove, Stillwater, White Bear Lake, Mahtomedi, and more! The 3rd and 4th grade divisions will play their games with 9-foot baskets to provide a positive and rewarding experience for the participant while the 5th-8th grade divisions will use regulation 10-foot baskets. Games are played Saturday mornings and afternoons beginning in early December and concluding in early March. Teams will have one practice night per week during the season. Teams will begin practice in November. Cost is $135.00. Registration deadline is November 1.

SENIOR HIGH REC BASKETBALL (BOYS & GIRLS IN GRADES 9-12)

AT EDGERTON AND CARVER COMMUNITY GYMS AND WHITE BEAR LAKE SOUTH CAMPUS SUNDAYS, JANUARY 7 - MARCH 4, 12:00PM - 6:00PM Maplewood Parks and Recreation, in cooperation with White Bear Public Schools Community Services and Recreation Department, is offering a Senior High Basketball League. All players must be in high school. Each team must have a parent who is on the bench at each game. All rosters must be handed in one week prior to the team’s first game. Fee includes jersey, scorekeeper, and two referees per game.

Players on a Varsity, Junior Varsity, or B Squad basketball team are not eligible to play in this league. Team fee is $575.00, *registration is taken on a team basis* Registration deadline is December 11.

This co-ed youth soccer clinic is designed for beginner players and will teach the basic skills of soccer with drills, group games and scrimmaging in a fun and educational environment. Cost is $45.00.

AT MAPLEWOOD MIDDLE SCHOOL TUESDAYS, MAY 1 - JUNE 5 THURSDAYS, MAY 3 - JUNE 7 *Kids will be split between Tuesdays & Thursdays* Maplewood Parks and Recreation is proud to offer our co-rec youth soccer starter program. The 3v3 format for ages 4-6, and 4v4 format for ages 7-9 will provide for more touches, increased playing time, and most important more fun! This program is six weeks in length and will be played Tuesdays or Thursdays with the groups being split between the two days. The sessions will be a combination of skill development/instruction and game play. *AN ADULT VOLUNTEER HELPER WILL BE NEEDED FOR EACH TEAM* Cost is $65.00. Registration deadline is April 6.

2017 ANNUAL REC RUN RECAP

RECREATION

The 4th annual Maplewood Rec Run 3K/5K took place Saturday, September 30th on a course that took runners on the Gateway Trail from the Maplewood Community Center to Flicek Park and back.

Thanks to our sponsors and great volunteers, the event was a huge success, with 61 runners and raising just over $1,200 for our Youth Scholarship Fund! Racers enjoyed beautiful weather, bagels and coffee, water, juice, and other snacks along with pre-race fun. There were crazy hair spray, superhero tattoo and coloring stations, and other games.

The Maplewood Police and Fire Departments had a police car and a fire truck on site for the kids to check out as well!

A huge thank you to the staff that volunteered their time to help with this event and the companies who sponsored our race!

Wish Upon a Ballet is a dance program for children that incorporates popular children’s stories as well as ballet stories to create a dance class that is more than ballet steps. Using musical instruments, parachutes, and scarves we will create a complete fairy tale experience while we skip, leap, jump and spin. This way, an introduction to the movements and vocabulary of ballet are taught in a fun and creative manner. Children will learn an appreciation of dance and music while developing strength and flexibility. Parents, family, and friends will be invited to observe a special performance at the end of each session. Come join the fun! Girls and boys will need ballet shoes. Girls should wear a leotard and tights. Boys should wear comfortable clothes they can move around in.

Proper terms for dance steps will be taught as well as body awareness to improve posture, strength, and flexibility. Students will gain poise and confidence as they leap and spin! Ballet and tap shoes are required. Cost is $160 *Registration fee does not include the costume fee for recital. For the recital, girls in ballet, tap/ballet, and tap/hip hop will need to provide their own white leotard (any style) and flesh colored tights. Boys need black pants.

T’AI CHI CH’AUN (Ages 16+)

AT DRAGONS KUNG FU STUDIO, 2572 7th Ave E., North St. Paul WEDNESDAYS, 7:30PM - 8:30PM T’ai Chi Ch’uan, practiced in China for 2500 years, uses slow relaxed movements to develop strength while eliminating tension.

While doing so you will strengthen your arms and legs, improve balance and flexibility, reduce stress, and help increase energy levels. A growing body of research also suggests that practicing T’ai Chi Ch’uan has many benefits, resulting in relaxation, improved balance, and a significant improvement in quality of life! Come experience the benefits for yourself! Class is taught with a traditional set of training ideals by Gold T’ai Chi Ch’uan group Head Instructor, Elaine Schrade. Cost is $75.00.

Teams will play one match per week for ten weeks starting in early January 2018. All leagues are officiated and play by the same rules; the difference in leagues being in the skill of the players. Registration closes December 12 or when leagues fill.

Maplewood Nature Center is a 40-acre preserve operated by the City of Maplewood. The Visitor Center is located at 2659 East Seventh Street in Maplewood and is open Tuesday through Saturday, 8:30AM - 4:30PM. The Nature Play Yard adjoins the Visitor Center. Trails wind through oak woods and marsh and are open every day from dawn to dusk. Use of facilities is free of charge.

HOW CAN I SUPPORT MAPLEWOOD PARKS & REC? ADOPT - A- PARK

The goal of the Adopt-A-Park Program is to provide an opportunity for interested parties to take part in maintaining our parks system. Providing this opportunity not only encourages and promotes community involvement, but also allows us to beautify and improve our parks. All Adopt-A-Park projects should aim towards benefiting the majority of park users. This opportunity is available to any individual, family, resident, group organization, or business that is eager to help beautify our parks. The Adopt-A-Park commitment period is from April 1 – October 31. Applications are accepted throughout the year and require a minimum of once a month dedication.

ADULT ATHLETIC SIGN SPONSORSHIP

The adult athletic sign sponsorship is a unique marketing opportunity for local businesses. Maplewood Parks & Recreation has started an outfield sign program at Veteran’s Memorial Park (formerly Goodrich). This is an opportunity to purchase one, two, or three 4’ x 8’ outfield signs that are visible from the softball fields as well as North St. Paul Road. Veteran’s Memorial Park houses the entire adult softball program (summer, fall and late fall leagues) and hosts multiple youth tournaments throughout the season. The funds from these sponsorships will go directly to maintaining and upgrading this facility, keeping the fields suitable for the high level of play they receive.

This non-profit organization works to promote, support and enhance the growth of the Maplewood Nature Center and Neighborhood Preserves. You can support Friends of Maplewood Nature with your membership fees, 1-time-donations, purchase of Neighborhood Preserve Calendars, by participating in the Photo Contest, or volunteering on the Friends Board!

YOUTH SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The Youth Scholarship Fund serves Maplewood residents (under 18 years) who demonstrate a financial need and may not otherwise have the opportunity to participate in recreation programs. Qualifying families are asked to pay 1/3 of the program fee and the scholarship fund covers the remaining 2/3 of the fee. Sponsorship of our scholarship program is a great way to show your support for Maplewood Parks & Recreation and the community. Your contribution will make a huge difference in the lives of our participants and enable them to build a positive and healthy lifestyle through recreational programming. JR. POLAR FOOTBALL

Jr. Polar Football is a volunteer youth sports organization committed to building teamwork, understanding the fundamentals of the game, developing skills, encouraging sportsmanship and most importantly having fun playing football.

The program is open to residents that live within or attend school (public or private) within the geographic boundary of North St. Paul - Maplewood - Oakdale and is part of the North St. Paul Athletic Association. The football program is open to all youth. The goal of the football program is to encourage sportsmanship and to teach the fundamentals of football. Flag Football is available to boys & girls entering Kindergarten up to 2nd grade. Tackle football begins in 3rd grade and continues through 8th grade. MAPLEWOOD AREA HISTORICAL SOCIETY

The Maplewood Area Historical Society and the Bruentrup Heritage Farm is located on 2.5 acres of land with nine buildings that date back to 1891. It is surrounded on two sides by a 22-acre prairie maintained as open space by the City of Maplewood. The Farm is used for public events and exhibits and can be rented for private events such as weddings. It is our mission to promote, provide and teach soccer in the “Spirit of the Game.” FUN, FAIRNESS and SAFETY. We provide traveling soccer for players; boys and girls ages 9-19. We try to provide the best competition for all players at their level of play. Our traveling soccer teams compete against other soccer clubs from communities in the East Metro Area. Travel distances are within 15-45 minutes from Maplewood. We are also proud to partner with Maplewood Parks and Rec for their fall recreation league; providing coach clinics, weekly skills sessions and certified referees to the program. NORTH POLARS FASTPITCH

The North Polars Fastpitch Association (NPFA) is a non-profit organization established to foster the girl’s fastpitch softball program in the area of Independent School District 622, which is within the boundaries of North St. Paul High School. This includes all or portions of the communities of North St. Paul, Maplewood, Lake Elmo and Oakdale. The association exists to fulfill the girl’s fastpitch softball needs of the community and is the primary advocate of the traveling program. The association supports good sportsmanship and the sound development of softball fundamentals within the community, to ensure that girls participating in the program will have a positive and rewarding experience that will maximize personal and team growth. The association requires quality coaching and provides an atmosphere for learning softball skills for both coaches and players.
