MANAGING EDITOR’S NOTE
The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched, they must be felt by the heart.” –– HELEN KELLER
Welcome to map magazine’s 145th issue and the year that we officially become a teenager! I’m not quite sure what to make of being 13 years old, except to say that I am immensely proud and truly grateful to all those who have touched map magazine in some shape or form since it launched in 1999. When I started map magazine, the idea of creating a business with a conscience and publishing a magazine that focused on the positive was not what you would call ‘the norm’. These days, with the advent of the internet and the faster proliferation of trends, it now seems quite normal – although I do still believe there
is room for big business to do a lot more! map has always believed in the value of the creative business in a community and businesses that practise design-led thinking. In 2012, Brisbane is shining with a bucketload of these types of businesses with heaps more on their way – what an exciting time to live and to dream! Thank you to the many people who have helped me live my dream for the past 13 years, and I look forward to seeing map grow and evolve into the next phase of its life. I hope you enjoy the words of our dreamers and they inspire you to dance with your dreams in the daylight.

EDITOR’S MEMO
––
It’s been 13 years since map magazine first made its way onto the streets of Brisbane – and how we’ve seen the city blossom! To be able to document and share the dreams of the denizens of our city for more than a decade has been a wonderful honour and one that we look forward to continuing for many years to come. Not only do we celebrate our 13th birthday with our September Cloth issue, but we also share the stories of some of the inspiring souls, both locally and internationally, who are living their dreams and inspiring others to do the same: Tovah Cottle, the bright young fashion designer who overcame a harrowing past to find happiness and success; Pat Blue, who channelled his passion for classical painting into beautiful men’s fashion; and Macy Gray, whose voice and music have enamoured millions. I hope you enjoy the stories of their journeys!

When we think of animal testing for cosmetic products, it’s often rats that are known to be the most common victims. In truth, the heartbreaking practice extends well into the animal kingdom, with cuddly beagles commonly amongst the mistreated due to their docile and trusting nature. Beagle Freedom Project aims to rescue afflicted pups from the terrible fate of being used in laboratory research and find new homes for them. While adoption and fostering is only available to US residents, you can donate to the project online. @ www.beaglefreedomproject.org

CHARLES MINGUS
“Making the simple, awesomely simple; that’s creativity.”
mikki@mapmagazine.com.au
His mercurial temperament and musical genius made Charles Mingus somewhat of a god as a jazz bassist, bandleader and composer. At one stage, his music was deemed too complicated to play without his direction, but he still left behind the secondlargest legacy of composition in American music. The non-profit organisation Let My Children Hear Music was established in 1986 to preserve Charles’ legacy through the musical education of younger generations.

ON THE ROAD With a vision to bring Jack Kerouac’s cult novel On the Road to life, producer Francis Ford Coppola teamed up with director Walter Salles in an ambitious film project. Based on Jack’s seminal work, which is regarded as the epitome of the Beat Generation’s intensity, the film adaptation of On the Road relives the tale that has inspired many to embark on an American roadtrip. With just a few pennies between them, friends Sal Paradise and Dean Moriarty – both desperate to belong to something larger than themselves – travel across the USA in search of ‘it’. For your chance to attend map magazine’s screening at Dendy Portside at 6:30 pm on Wednesday September 19, visit www.mapmagazine.com.au and follow the ‘Readers Premiere’ links. 113 lucky entrants will win a double pass. GOLDEN // BRAIDS Inspired by the errant locks of Pippi Longstocking, Brooklynbased designer Shana Tabor of In God We Trust envisaged a bracelet that manifested the form of human tresses. By plaiting real hair, creating a mould from it and casting it in solid brass, Shana crafted the Pippi Cuff. The mini empire that is In God We Trust also includes men’s and women’s fashion, as well as accessories such as custom-made wedding bands. As Prohibition came to a close in the USA, the Great Depression settled in, meaning there was little disposable income to be spent on a tipple. America was not to be deterred, however, and the lack of funds resulted in Spodee – a beguiling blend of homemade country wine and moonshine liquor mixed with whatever fruits, spices and herbs happened to be nearby at the time. But while Spodee was the tipple of choice for that era, it was soon forgotten. Inspired by the reality that the USA is once again in a spot of economic bother, White Mule Farms has commenced Spodee production. @ www.spodeewine.com
A gentle tug at the sides of a bowtie is a sign that a gent is ready to hit the town for a special evening. Ensuring that such neck accoutrements are of the highest quality, Dutch designer Jackie Villevoye’s Jupe range of bowties is crafted in the spirit of grace and elegance, from high-quality materials that are intended to retain their beauty as time passes. The printed silk bowties are handembroidered by artisans in India, where intricate needlework is considered a fine art. Giving its wearer a capricious charm, this Black Chess bowtie is embroidered with a subtle chess pattern. @ www.jupe-by-jackie.com

A FASHIONABLE FETISH TAKEN TO SCULPTURAL HEIGHTS
Somewhat of a loaded word, ‘fetish’ evokes a dark mental montage of uncontrolled desire, lust and even shame. And while a shoe fetish can often manifest itself in more sinister forms that border on depravity, it can also be a less serious – but equally problematic – ailment common to fashionistas. Crafting shoes that explore the ‘sadistic world’ of a fashion lover’s shoe fetish, designer Omar Perez created his Stilett”O” series of sculptured sky-high heels in tribute to the women who endure significant amounts of pain in order to wear the objects of their desire. Using meticulous carving and veneer work, Omar sculpts his elaborate creations into conspicuous stilettos that unabashedly overshadow the rest of an outfit. While they are more likely destined for haute couture
photo shoots rather than everyday wear, the captivating series of sculptural stilettos is at once inspiring and confounding, with jagged metal detailing, peacock feathers and bandsaw blades all part of the design. Omar’s creative inklings first formed during his childhood as he observed the work of his artist/ seamstress mother and his father, who handmade many of his toys. Somewhat of a polymath, Omar has since charted a creative journey that has included stints as a woodworker and furniture maker, as well as an animator – winning an Emmy for excellence in broadcast graphics in 2004. As for his vertigo-inducing stiletto creations, if you are intrepid enough to attempt a stroll in them, we suggest that you ensure you possess impeccable balance prior to strapping them to your ankles.

personal development service that prepares people for love by helping them strengthen their body, mind and spirit. What training or qualifications do you need to fill this role? The essential elements are instinct, the ability to read people, and life experience. What are the key skills and responsibilities of the role? I assess and identify my clients’ unique assets and help them understand the steps they can take towards personal development. How did you get involved in your profession? While working in family law, I saw many families torn apart by divorce – I was inspired to find a way to bring people together and help them fill voids in their lives. Could you break into the industry in other ways? There are many ways because this is such a broad industry with many areas to specialise in. What do you hope to achieve within your industry? To make people happy with themselves. Are you in the industry for the long term? At this moment I couldn’t imagine doing anything else. What advice would you give someone looking to emulate your success? Be true to yourself. Look at what truly drives you, then plan what you need to do to get to where you would like to be. Did you always think you would be in this role? Not at all! After entering the legal profession, I thought that was where I wanted to be. My role in background checking and pre-employment screening provided insights into human behaviour, which I now leverage as The Dating Stylist. What was your first paid job? I worked for CHANEL cosmetics straight out of high school. What would you love to do if you weren’t in this role? Part of my role has a counselling component, so I would probably be in the counselling and psychology field. What inspires you? People, their passions, their hopes and their experiences. Who is your rolemodel? My mum, as she taught me to always be true to myself, and Bethenny Frankel (founder of Skinnygirl) for proving that hard work and persistence pays off. What are your words of wisdom? All that is needed is focus, hard work and self-belief to make a dream become your reality.
in various styles, including rock and roll, slow swing/swing jive, lindy hop and Latin. What training or qualifications do you need to fill this role? I did my ballroom medal examinations many years ago and have also had training in other dance styles, including rock and roll and swing.

Be true to yourself.” – – KIM LAL
What are the key skills and responsibilities of the role?
To teach people from beginner to advanced levels how to dance and do so in a relaxed and correct manner. I teach people to enjoy dancing and how to move to the rhythm of music. You must have a desire to dance and you also need good people skills. How did you get involved in your profession? I had been dancing all my life, so starting to teach rock and roll and swing dance was a natural progression for me. Could you break into the industry in other ways? The best way is to study dance and follow through with it. You must have the desire to dance and to pass on your acquired skills.
Dedication is the key to success.” – – ROBYN O’CONNOR
What do you hope to achieve within your industry?
I hope to teach people to dance well and to enjoy themselves at the same time. Are you in the industry for the long term? Yes – until I can’t dance anymore. What advice would you give someone looking to emulate your success? Know what you are teaching and teach it well – dedication is the key to success. Did you always think you would be in this role? I have always
danced since I was a child and I would be lost without it. What was your first paid job? My first job was working as a secretary. What would you love to do if you weren’t in this role? I’m not sure, as I have no desire to do anything else – I am very happy doing what I do. What inspires you? Seeing people who haven’t danced before
actually get out on the dancefloor, dance well and enjoy themselves at the same time. Who is your rolemodel? World-champion boogie woogie dancers Marcus and Bärbl – their style of dancing and fluidity is superb. What are your words of wisdom? The basics are where it is at – you must know the basics in order to be able to dance any style properly.

TOVAH COTTLE Brisbane fashion designer and former international model Tovah Cottle is currently putting the finishing touches on her autumn/ winter 2013 collection. It’s her fourth collection since launching her namesake label, TOVAH, in 2011. Tovah is inspired by art and architecture, and weaves these influences through her beautiful creations with geometric shapes and structures, daring colour palettes and new fabric technologies. Her effortless talent is wowing many in the fashion industry, including iconic Australian designer Camilla Franks, who worked with Tovah as a mentor. Tovah’s motivation is to make a better life after enduring a turbulent past.
Like many young fashion designers, Tovah Cottle chose to ignore lecturers’ warnings against starting a label straight out of fashion college. Rather than practise on someone else’s business, Tovah launched her label, TOVAH, soon after graduating from Metropolitan South Institute of TAFE in 2010. “I was pretty determined to do it and when I get an idea in my head, there’s no stopping me,” Tovah explains of the impetus behind her label. However, she notes, it wasn’t a rash move. Tovah researched diligently and sought business advice from her mentor, iconic Australian fashion designer Camilla Franks, as well as other industry gurus available to her through QUT’s Creative Enterprise Australia Fashion Incubator program. Tovah’s hard work and innate talent is paying off as she proves she is one to watch with her art-meets-architecture approach to fashion. This adventurous aesthetic has been her signature since graduating from TAFE when she impressed with her first design – an avant-garde lingerie piece created for the Australian category of the Triumph Inspiration Awards. The award challenges students from all over the world to conceptualise and design a unique lingerie showpiece. Tovah’s design submission consisted of boots and headwear made from white leather and silver sequins, including a layered wing-like fixture worn on the

back. It walked a fine line between architectural sculpture and wearable art, and the judges were suitably impressed. Tovah won first place in Australia and her design went on to be worn by supermodel Helena Christensen at the international finals in London. Audi also snapped up the piece for a television commercial. The Triumph Inspiration Awards enabled Tovah to dig deep into her creative wells, but the launch of TOVAH in 2011 required a more restrained aesthetic. Making her debut at MercedesBenz Fashion Week Australia in 2011 and showing again this year, Tovah explains that her label is evolving as she strives to tame her creativity. “I really like lots of panelling and lots of different fabrics, but it wasn’t something I could keep doing commercially; it was almost more art than wearable,” Tovah explains of her past creations. She is enjoying the challenge of balancing the creativity and the viability of her designs. “And I guess that’s where the print came in. That for me was a way to still bring that creativity in through the print and keep my silhouettes a little clearer.” The print Tovah is referring to is the result of a collaboration with innovative German digital artist Holger Lippmann. Tovah approached Holger to help create her first art print on fabric for her spring/ summer 2012/13 collection. Tovah explains she stumbled across Holger’s work online and fell in love with it.
THE CLOTH ISSUE SEPTEMBER12
mm145-p20-21-LOCL-xx.indd 20
Among other art forms, Holger throws ink onto liquids and photographs the result. “As soon as I saw it, I knew straight away we needed to get these photos onto fabric,” she says of Holger’s multimedia work. “It’s really vibrant and lovely,” Tovah gushes of the print created for her clothing. The experience of collaborating has helped Tovah realise that she enjoys connecting with other creative folk. “I really like the team effort and working with somebody else, especially with other artists and creatives. It adds to the whole process.” Tovah says creativity has always been a part of her life. Greek-born, she grew up in Cyprus until the age of 12 when she immigrated with her mother and sister to Australia to live in Brisbane. She has many happy memories of her childhood. “Cyprus was a great place for a kid to live; we had a lot of freedom. Beautiful food and beautiful beaches – that’s what I remember the most.” She credits her mother for fuelling her creativity. “Although she’s never had a job in the creative industries, she’s a very creative person,” Tovah says fondly. “She always made my clothes as a child. And I’m told that apparently her dream when she was younger was to be a fashion designer.” Tovah recalls that at age 13 she, too, dreamed of being a fashion designer while sitting in the Queen Street Mall watching

models strut the catwalk for the RAQ Fashion Design Awards. She was introduced to the world of fashion the following year when she was discovered as a model by a scout at Priscilla’s Model Management. Tovah became an international success as a model, however she entered a dark place in her late teens and early twenties when she very publicly tumbled from grace, becoming a heroin addict and committing armed robbery and fraud offences. She was jailed for six years in 2005, but was released after 27 months. While in prison, Tovah committed to treating her addiction once and for all through rehabilitation programs – and, fortuitously, a chaplain taught her to sew. Her journey featured on Australian Story in May this year and she notes that she was surprised and heartened by the messages of support she received from viewers after it aired. Tovah says her greatest life challenge has been the task of overcoming her drug addiction. “But I never considered giving up,” she shares. “My motivation was to make a better life for my son. I just knew there had to be more to life.” Tovah counts her greatest achievements in life as her
son, aged 12, her partner in life and business, Warren Jopson, and her fashion label. Tovah loves her work because the explorative and creative process of design fascinates her. “Starting with an idea in your head and turning that into a three-dimensional garment – I love that whole process of using the creative side of your brain.” While she tries to keep Sundays free, Tovah’s fashion label consumes most of her waking hours – so it’s fortunate she finds peace in her home studio. “That’s where I go to relax,” she says. Asked if she considers herself a success, Tovah says: “Yes, because I measure success by my happiness – by how I’m feeling and if I’m happy within myself.” She is now in a good place and intends to keep taking it one day and one collection at a time. Her dream is to grow her label and her creative potential. “I just want to continue to expand the label and keep working with more creative people. I love the collaborations. That’s the fun part for me.” Her words of wisdom for herself are that anything is possible. “If you are willing to work hard enough for it, you can do it. Get up and give it a go.”

Perhaps the only time when it is considered acceptable for a gentleman to be mesmerised by a women’s chest in public situations is when she has a particularly breathtaking necklace strung across her decolletage. Fitting elegantly into that category are the mesmerising and elegant pearl necklaces from Londonbased jewellery designer Melanie Georgacopoulos. Imbuing her work with the mystic quality of the pearl, Melanie crafts stunning creations that synthesise Art Deco grace and modern vanguard using precious materials such as onyx and gold that are bound to incite stares. @ www.melaniegeorgacopoulos.com

A wander through a shoe museum will reveal the fact that what may seem an innovative shoe design today is actually the redux of a creation first conceived decades ago. Aiming to design a shoe that is the first of its kind whilst still maintaining wearability, brothers Iskender and Adilet Asanaliev designed the Tangled Heel. Hailing from Kyrgyzstan, the fraternal duo designed the shoe with an upper section that is constructed from a single piece of leather, which minimises the amount of materials used in the production process. @ www.iskender.kg
Conventional sartorial theory tells us that lace usually has a place only in women’s garments. Far from sticking to social mores, Marwood London upends stereotypes with its range of lace ties and bowties for men. Founded in 2009 by Becky French, Marwood London began life as an online sketchbook of research that ultimately inspired the concept and philosophy behind the autumn/winter collection of Marwood London neckties in 2011. The range of neck finery uses the finest fabrics such as woven silk, wool and traditional English Leavers lace. @ www.marwoodlondon.co.uk

By embracing edgy and innovative designs to produce spectacles and eyewear, the brand’s designer creates frames for the sartorialist who wants to stand out. Stars who have already been seen in the chic creations include Ryan Gosling and Christina Hendricks. Well before the brand’s celebrity following, Selima designs
were entwined with the film industry, being inspired by vintage film and style. The designer behind the brand, Selima Salaun, is an avid collector of vintage frames, and combines both classic and modern styles in her designs. You can become a member of Selima’s fashionable following by purchasing a pair from the latest collection at Eye Candy Emporium. These glasses are intended for those who embrace their creative side and appreciate quality craftmanship in their purchases. The Selima eyewear range joins the existing collection of frames housed at Eye Candy Emporium, including spectacles by Tom Ford and Oliver Peoples.

PAT BLUE Our most treasured garments are often those crafted from material so soft, with tailoring that sits so perfectly, that it’s almost a shame to take them off at the end of the day. This tactile attachment to clothing is common to wearers of Jac + Jack. The Sydney-based fashion label launched in 2004 as a purveyor of luxury knitwear and has since expanded to include an extensive range of clothing for ladies and gents. As well as donning the cap of the brand’s creative director, Pat Blue is also the artistic mind that has shepherded the label’s menswear range (stocked locally at Dirtbox) from fledgling to coveted.
“I don’t think I really had a childhood dream,” Pat Blue laughs when asked of his aspirations as a young lad. “I think my childhood was a dream – I grew up in a family where you could really be whatever you wanted.” The son of wanderers, Pat spent his childhood living in all manner of places, from the country to the city and even, during his teenage years, in India. “ Now that I look back on the experience, I think it was quite influential,” he reflects. “But at the time, I was just a kid going to school. I wasn’t that interested in spirituality or any of that stuff that people think about when they think about India!” Pat’s foray into fashion, by his own admission, “kind of just happened”. He’d always had an interest in the sartorial craft, but had never really considered it as a career. “The thing that I like about fashion is that it says something about everybody,” he explains. “Even if you don’t like fashion, what you’re wearing shows that you don’t care about fashion. And I do like beautiful things and a lot of the concepts and ideas that fashion encompasses as well.” His inner aesthete led him to follow a more artistic path at first, studying fine arts at university majoring in classical painting. Musing over ways he could turn his talent into a living, he thought he might find work doing illustrations for fashion designers, and enrolled in a series of fashion illustration courses. He soon realised he had found his creative fit and, after taking
30 map magazine
several more fashion courses, transferred over to a fashion degree. Pat’s first job in the fashion industry was as a sales assistant at a Marcs menswear boutique, which eventually led to a position working two days a week in the label’s menswear design room. Perhaps even more significant about that job at Marcs was the fact that it was also where he met his soon-to-be wife and business collaborator, Jac Hunt. He was still an intern learning the ropes; Jac was the experienced sage, designing womenswear for the brand. “Marcs was a very social business then,” Pat recalls. “Everyone used to go out all the time and Jac and I were friends for years before we eventually got together.” It was during that time when friendship was blooming into courtship that Jac was also starting her own label, Jac + Jack, with business partner Lisa ‘Jack’ Dempsey. By 2004, when she and Pat finally became a couple, the label was in full swing. A couple of years later, Pat began doing freelance work for Jac + Jack, lending his hand to various bits and pieces as the label grew. As menswear was only a very small component for the brand, it wasn’t economically viable for Pat to work full-time. But ever so slowly and cautiously, the gents range began to blossom. “Menswear is a lot harder than womenswear in the sense that there’s not as many accounts and not as much revenue to be pulled out of it,” Pat explains. “With womenswear, there are lots
THE CLOTH ISSUE SEPTEMBER12
mm145-p30-31-NTNL-xx.indd 30
of wholesale accounts. So we just started really slowly.” Pat has now worked for Jac + Jack for four years, the past two of which he has been full-time as the creative director and menswear designer. Peruse the lookbooks of both the men’s and women’s collections and you’ll quickly ascertain a similar creative undercurrent between the two. While working in their own creative headspaces, Pat and Jac do collaborate rather closely when envisaging the aesthetic for each collection, and the brand in general. “Both of us design separately, but we do kind of meet in the middle every now and then and compare things,” Pat says. “I don’t really start a collection with an exact idea. It’s more about collecting bits of information, whether it’s fabric I see or yarns I’ve found at shows. Then you get a feel for colour and things like that.” The basis for each Jac + Jack collection is its knitwear – the premise upon which the brand was originally founded. “Yarns are some of the first things to be shown in the fashion season, so you get a good sense of what is happening in the fashion industry,” Pat explains. “When you go to places like Pitti Filati and see all the yarns from the different mills, you get a good sense of where people are wanting to go.” But while the label works with an awareness of the fashion zeitgeist of each season, Pat says Jac + Jack is less trenddriven in its aesthetic. “I don’t really worry about what’s happening with the collections

overseas,” he says. “But, inevitably, you’ll be influenced by what happens, whether it’s conscious or not. When I look at other people’s collections I can see what they’ve been influenced by and, undoubtedly, you could say the same thing about us but it’s not something I’m too worried about. Trends are happening so fast these days and they’re only valid according to your own personal perception of them.” The creative seedlings of Jac + Jack’s spring/summer 2012 collection took hold during a holiday Jac and Pat took to Italy’s Amalfi Coast following one of their biannual trips to Pitti Filati in Florence. “What really inspired us was that the fashions were a lot more relaxed and fun,” Pat explains. “And it wasn’t that the whole idea was based around the Italians. Jac came up with the concept of the ‘holiday in Italy’ and what you feel like wearing while you’re there, as opposed to what the Italians wear. It’s a little bit preppy but also fun. There are a lot of wealthy American students who go there and they wear that kind of preppy Italian style. And then there’s also that gelato palette and really soft beautiful Italian tailoring.” Further overseas, Jac + Jack also employs women artisans in Chandroti, India. In a curious
Attitude is everything – I believe this to be true!
coincidence, Jac happened to live in India at the same time as Pat, although their paths didn’t cross until later in life. The mother of one of Jac’s friends in India ran a knitting collective for untrained or illiterate women in a hill village. When Jac happened to visit the project, she fell in love with the simple blankets and scarves the women were knitting, but soon realised that the yarn was of a very poor quality. She soon arranged for Jac + Jack to send over Australian wool, which the women knit into the label’s designs, with all the profits going back to the women themselves, empowering them with a better quality of living. Pat is self-effacing when pressed about his humanitarian inclinations. “We would like to incorporate more of these sorts of things into our business, but we’re a bit sceptical about harping on about it, because everybody seems to do it,” he says. Unsurprisingly, Pat is inspired most by the people who do things with integrity and honesty in their creative field, and who make the most of their lives. After all, he muses, you never know which day might be your last. “You can go anytime, so make the most of what’s happening right now,” he says. “You really have to live your life as well as you can.”

GHOSTLY // In a touching design tribute
inspired by the sight of his grandmother caught in the clutches of Alzheimer’s, designer Tuomas Markunpoika Tolvanen created the Engineering Temporality series. After encasing furniture pieces in an intricate web of steel rings, Tuomas then destroyed them with fire to create the sense of functioning objects that represent only a ghostly memory of their original selves.

While ‘waste not want not’ may be a decree more commonly associated with frugal grandparents, the same motto is also inspiring a creative crop of Brisbane denizens to transform abandoned spaces into rejuvenated local haunts that buzz with fervent activity. Amongst this new breed of entrepreneur that is changing the way we look at Brisbane’s old storerooms and unused laneways that sit off the beaten track are the folks behind A Wasted Space. A boutique that occupies the back rooms of clandestine Paddington cafe, Cabinessence, A Wasted Space is a gem waiting to be discovered by the curious. With the exception of a sign on the footpath, the space is largely unsigned and could
easily by missed by those ducking into Cabinessence for a quick takeaway coffee. Those who do stumble upon the space can expect the same raw interior of the cafe, as well as Cabinessence’s signature mismatched furniture and laidback atmosphere. Chinos are stacked inside a converted fireplace, unpolished floorboards are disguised by homely rugs and an old china cabinet houses accessories. The collection includes a smattering of ladies fashion, but the focus is largely on the gents. Lads will find casual streetwear including chinos, which can be rolled up and coupled with a pair of Happy Socks, as well as pieces from the Mr Simple range of shirts and accessories, and Herschel bags and wallets.

Upon closer inspection, the photo wall reveals framed keepsakes including family photos and old menus (one of which dates back to 1966 and prices a dozen oysters at just $2). Nestled beside the photo wall is a cluster of antique demijohn wine bottles, while the metal baskets that once held the bottles hang overhead as light shades. MACY GRAY Things that we may at first see as a curse can sometimes reveal themselves to be our greatest assets. What is now known as one of the most distinct singing voices of the past decade was once a shameful burden for a little girl growing up in Ohio. Fortunately, as she discovered her own musical spirit, Macy Gray began to embrace her unique gift. Her latest album, Covered, reveals a whole new side to the Grammy-winning chanteuse, as she takes songs from the likes of Metallica, My Chemical Romance and Radiohead and makes them her own. Macy will perform songs from the album during her show at QPAC on September 20.
I grew up in Ohio … and my childhood dream was really just to get out of there. It’s a wholesome kind of place where you grow up with nice values, but I always wanted to do something really special. It’s not that you can’t do that in Ohio, but just not the things I wanted to do. I’ve always loved music … and I grew up with parents who always had the radio on. My mum and dad were very social people and they’d always have people over and the radio would always be playing. I’m going to date myself by saying this, but my father also had an eight-track that was always on! The first song I remember hearing ... was ‘Everyday People’ by Sly Stone. I was five years old and I was living with my mum, who was single at the time – I really remember it very visually. I didn’t like my voice … as a kid, because everyone made fun of it. It made me very quiet and I didn’t talk much as a result. I started singing … for fun, really. I learned about music really early on and I took piano lessons and always gravitated towards musicians. I started joining bands just for fun and I ended up with all these tapes with my singing on them, because I would write songs and then show the person how to sing it. Then people started asking me to sing at hotels with them, but it all started out as a little joke for fun, to be honest.
40 map magazine
The greatest challenge in music … for me, is freedom. There are a lot of people around who want to tell you what to do and that you need to change this or that. But I think it’s really important to stick to your guns and stay true to what you really believe in. Hold on to your confidence in yourself. A lot of people, including the press, have opinions on what you should do differently. My greatest achievement … is still being able to tour. I’m still shocked when people show up and they know all the words. I think it’s cool to have been around for this long and to be still doing it and having people come to my shows. When I started doing Covered … I really wanted to do my own thing. I had heard this Nina Simone record where she took all these rock songs and turned them into Nina Simone songs. I thought that was really extraordinary and it’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time, but no label wanted to do it. I wanted to take all the songs and make them my own and to make them sound new – like songs that you’d never heard before. I haven’t talked to everybody … whose original songs I’ve covered on the album, but I did get hold of Dave Stewart, and Gerard from My Chemical Romance. I know Karen O from Yeah Yeah Yeahs heard it, but I never heard back from her, so I don’t know what she thought of it!

When I want to discover new music … these days I have kids, so I find out that way. My daughter is actually a huge rock and roll fan, and she really got me into Jack White. I always liked him but, because of her, now I’m obsessed with him because she listens to him all the time. I also heard about Adele years ago from my youngest daughter, who showed me her video on YouTube. I remember thinking she was cool, but I didn’t realise she’d become who she has. My kids inspire me … because you do all sorts of things that you wouldn’t be doing if you didn’t have kids. I’ve really just been introduced to another side of life and I’ve found different things to write about. You even approach love differently when you have kids. My favourite place to listen to music … is anywhere at all. If you’re paying attention, music is all around you. I love blasting it in the car, but I’m also a big fan of headphones. There are lots of musicians who inspire me … I’m a big Prince fan and I’m a Bob Marley worshipper – for me he was Jesus in another form. I’m inspired by different music every day, but I never got into death metal or stuff like that, because I like melodies and lyrics! Music is like any other craft … because the more you know, the better you’ll be. I love going to other people’s concerts … As soon as I see someone

is in town, even if I’m not a huge fan of them, I still go along just to check it out because every artist brings something new – there’s a reason they have fans. I like watching crowds a lot, and I kind of study them in a way. Often it changes my approach to performance, but I had to stop going for a while because I was starting to get jealous of the other artists and down on myself because I wasn’t doing what they were doing! I came to be in the film Paperboy ... after I first met director Lee Daniels a few years ago when he wanted me to be in the movie Shadowboxer, with Helen Mirren and Cuba Gooding Jnr. We got to know each other then and he really is extraordinary and fearless – he’s not afraid to do what he wants to do. He’s not all about giving people what they want. We’re really good friends and I love him a lot. I hope I get to work with him a lot more. The reason I campaign against the situation in Darfur … is because there are a lot of people out there who are really helpless and there’s a lot of power and money in the world, so there’s no reason that things
win
should be that way. And when you dig into things and find out the reasons and the people behind it, there’s not a lot you can do, but I still think it’s important that everybody chips in. We get upset at our leaders and politicians, but what have we actually done about the situation ourselves? A lot of people either don’t have time or they don’t make time. I just think that if you want the world to be a better place, then you have to be a part of that process and do your part, even if it’s just a little bit. I love going to TED conferences … because it’s as if all the nerds went to the Grammys. There are so many interesting people there, it’s crazy. And you just get to see another side of things – I mean, there’s a lot more going on in the world than just music. If I could give my kids one piece of wisdom to take through life … it would be to stay out of trouble. If you try to be poetic with kids, they just tune you out! But for myself, I live by the philosophy that if you make mistakes, you just pick yourself up and keep going. Hopefully I can pass that onto them one day.

According to Sep and Fergus from Alcove Cafe and Deli, access to fresh produce needn’t be a luxury. With the Brisbane area being a playground for local providores, the friends decided to create a cafe that would provide a meaningful connection between producer and plate. The cafe’s deli is stocked with local gourmet goods, while all meals are made from local ingredients. On weekends, Alcove also plays host to a mini market that offers seasonal produce, fresh flowers and breads. For breakfast, there’s Avocado, Fetta and Dukka Smash on Toast, while for lunch there are salads and sandwiches – all made with produce grown on the cafe’s doorstep.
champ kitchen + bar is the latest venture by Justine Whelan (of Anouk and, formerly, the gunshop cafe fame). Pairing restaurant-quality food with a breezy setting on South Bank’s Cultural Forecourt, all with the casual atmosphere of a cafe, the eatery offers a spot to linger over breakfast or grab a drink before heading to QPAC for a show. The day starts with Anouk-style breakfasts and continues with lunch and dinner menus pieced together by chef Lucas McMillan. The daily food journey is told through the ever-rotating Market Table, which offers a selection of fare ranging from bircher muesli in the morning to cakes for afternoon tea.
According to Homer’s Odyssey, ‘moly’ is a magical herb that can only be safely harvested by the immortal Gods. Despite being named after this mythical herb, Holy Moly Espresso in Spring Hill is a cafe that caters to us mere mortal beings. Its magical elixir is delivered in the form of Melbourne’s Genovese Coffee and T2 tea, while the breakfast menu offers a spread of fare fit for royalty. Start the day with the Bushman’s Benny – a hearty feast of savoury mince and poached eggs – or try a simple serving of toast with fresh jam made in-house. Now also open on Saturday mornings, Holy Moly Espresso is a relaxing inner-city retreat.

While it’s practically taboo to accept a plastic shopping bag these days, few people enjoy being a walking promotion while toting about supermarketbranded green bags. The Farmers Market Bag from The Horse is both more soothing to your sense of aesthetics and to your social conscience. From every jute bag purchased, $25 will go straight to the Love Mercy Foundation’s Cents for Seeds initiative – an agricultural micro-loan program in northern Uganda that empowers rural women to be more self-sufficient. @ www.thehorse.com.au
Kickstand Coffee began life in 2010 as a bicyclepowered coffee stand at outdoor markets in New York City. Operating on an Earth-friendly philosophy, Kickstand roasts and brews its coffee in the most ecologically sound methods possible (including, not surprisingly, delivery by bike). Last year the brand added another coffee-themed feather to its cap with the launch of its bottled cold-brew concentrate. Kickstand also makes sure to list the roast date and origin of the particular beans used in each bottle of concentrate. @ www.kickstandglobal.com
Connoisseurs of the barbecue will tell you that there’s a great technique in obtaining the perfect grill pattern across a tender piece of meat. Barcelonabased design collective Mermeladaestudio has created a concept barbecue that brings a whole new realm of design to the art of searing meat. Using a waterjet-cut stainless-steel grill, the Druida barbecue (named after the druidic cauldrons of a similar shape) brands your steak with a geometric grid pattern sure to appeal to both the creative and gustatory palate of design lovers. @ www.mermeladaestudio.es
SIBLING // SYRUP When two siblings spend large amounts of time together, the result can either be a cataclysmic clash of wills, or an unbeatable meeting of the minds. Thankfully for those who keep the company of Kari and Tyler Morris, it’s the latter. Together, the brother-sister team handcraft Morris Kitchen syrups, which include Ginger Syrup, Apple Cider Syrup, and a newly devised Lemon Syrup that features hints of pink peppercorn and cardamom. Based in Brooklyn, the Morris siblings hand-stamp the date on each bottle, which also feature letterpressed labels. @ www.morriskitchen.com

1½ cups plain flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 330 ml bottle Guinness Draught beer 500 g raw prawns, peeled and deveined pinch of cayenne pepper pinch of ground black pepper vegetable oil, for deep-frying
Sift the flour, baking powder, salt and pepper into a large mixing bowl. Gradually pour in the Guinness and whisk everything together until well combined; it should be a light and frothy batter with no lumps. Place in the refrigerator to rest for at least 20 minutes. Pour the vegetable oil into a medium saucepan until about half full, then heat the oil to 190°C over medium-high heat. Test to see if the oil is hot enough by dipping a wooden chopstick into the hot oil – if the oil starts steadily bubbling around the chopstick, it’s ready. Working in batches, dip the prawns in the batter, then carefully drop them into the hot oil and deep fry for one minute, or until golden brown. Remove and drain on paper towel. Sprinkle with cayenne pepper and serve with wasabi mayo.

One of a slew of indie bands native to Brooklyn, Grizzly Bear began simply as the solo stage name of its original member Ed Droste, who released the album Horn of Plenty in 2004 under the moniker. Over the next few years Ed grew his musical outfit to become a foursome and released three more albums, the latest of which is Shields. Leaving their hometown to explore their musicality in places such as Texas and Cape Cod, the lads of Grizzly Bear have crafted this slick offering that zig-zags between angst, longing and pondering.
Soothing lyrical ditties that could easily be used lull a child to sleep help to compose the self-titled debut album of four-piece, Poor Moon. The group, consisting of Christian Wargo, Casey Wescott (both members of Fleet Foxes), and brothers Ian and Peter Murray, came into being after the other three members became enamoured by a collection of songs that Christian had penned. While there are flashes of Fleet Foxish vocal harmonies, Poor Moon is a touch more upbeat, featuring the harpsichord, fretless zither and marimba for something new and cheerful.
What set Abbey Lincoln apart from other jazz songstresses of her era was the fact that much of the music she performed was of her own composition. While heavily influenced in her early years by Billie Holiday, Abbey soon began to craft her own musical style with lyrics that dealt with topics less frivolous than usual jazz ditties, including the civil rights movement, which was rife during the 1960s. Straight Ahead is known as one of Abbey’s greatest musical legacies and features her singing both her own compositions, as well as those of other jazz greats.
The music of the Central Balkans is renowned for its energetic rhythms and guitar riffs that flirt gregariously with sharp violin solos, immediately urging your body to dance. Adding a rock and roll bent to the traditional folk music of the Balkans, French band Maudite Tarif brings a touch of modernity to the classic genre. The band’s new album Centrale Balkanique takes several well-known Balkan instrumental pieces and infuses them with swift electric guitar picking and modern rhythms that prove an interesting fusion of old and new.

The book ends with 35 pages of websites, in groups such as microcontrollers, software, sensors, and sonic sandscape. It starts with a theoretical discourse, then builds up to eight chapters, with 170 pages of examples where technology has been used to create fashion. Dresses of sheer fabrics interwoven with fine wiring provide an ever-changing pattern at the whim of the wearer, while LED clothing probes the skin to reflect the body’s moods, and auditory cloth plays tunes while you wear it. All in all, a remarkable sample of the future of clothing.
Fifty-two bearded styles on only two faces, to keep things subjective. All aspects are covered, from the growing of fu manchu, the French fork and el insecto moustaches, to 20 reasons why men grow fuzz. The goatee, the Amish and the walrus are discussed alongside the pros and cons of a hairy face and five myths about facial hair. A word on eyebrows – don’t do girlie! Finally, there’s maintenance – washing, trimming, clipping and snipping – and to end, saying goodbye. For those who can, a pleasant introduction to the world of the mo’.
Tomboy – a girl who is bold, adventurous, lively and brazen. She doesn’t follow the rules, wears what she wants, does what she wishes, and perhaps does not relate to her present-day relatives. Tomboy style does not echo male clothing – it is an equal part of opportunity and spirit. Pages of photos, mainly black and white in tomboy style, show a variety of clothing and the girls who wear it. From extreme highwayman breeches to casual sweaters, these are girls who know who they are and are proud of their conduct, their deportment and their manners.
Martin Gardner has been writing for the Scientific American for as long as I can remember. Many of these are from his columns of the late 1950s and early 1960s. He writes on mathematics, popularising problems and puzzles. Now 94 years old, he’s as alert as ever. Not for the fainthearted, the chapters range from ‘The Binary System’ through ‘Nine Problems’ and ‘The Ellipse’ to ‘The Calculus of Finite Differences’. There is even a mention of our Carl’s uncle and his dissections. Whether you are right or left brained, the appeal to solve these will resonate with all.

INSIDE OUT
SPIRO GRACE ART ROOMS
By depicting scenarios that feel at once familiar and slightly ominous, artist Monica Rohan plays on the boundaries between existing realities and the imagined realities conjured by the mind. The situations in Monica’s works are based on staged photographs, but each scene is
distorted during the painting process. Disrupting familiar perceptions of reality, Monica draws attention to the viewer’s emotional consciousness and the sense of self-awareness that takes hold when you begin to doubt yourself. FROM SEPTEMBER 14
TALES WITHIN HISTORICAL SPACES QUT ART MUSEUM
While Polish-born artist Beata Batorowicz’s works draw upon the storytelling tradition of folklore and fairytales, her work is far from the typical depictions of sprawling kingdoms and princes saving distressed damsels. Beata’s latest body of work, Tales within Historical Spaces, was inspired by a collection of children’s stories, titled Fairytales from Auschwitz, that was secretly authored and illustrated by Polish prisoners for their children during World War II. The exhibition, which consists of objects, installations, illustration and photography, draws upon the iconography of European folklore to examine the history of the war and the relationship between narrative and culture. With a diverse landscape that ranges from burgeoning cityscapes to glittering coastlines and blazing red desert, Australia means many things to many people. Artists Bruce Earles and Andrew Kelaher are both influenced by Australia’s geography when creating their works, but both in very
different ways, with Bruce hailing from Melbourne and Andrew calling the Central Coast home. Presenting a joint exhibition at REDSEA Gallery, both artists share their different perspectives of their island home alongside one another. SEPTEMBER 7–23

dancing spirit
NOA WERTHEIM American-born, Israeli choreographer Noa Wertheim has a beautiful turn of phrase. In explaining the way she creates new dance pieces for her esteemed Vertigo Dance Company, which she founded in Israel in 1992 with her partner in dance and life, Adi Sha’al, she shares: “I don’t control my creations. I see what’s happening. I see the language and the art and I see what is the feeling of the piece and I say, ‘Okay I’m coming after you’.” She is excited to bring her lauded dance work, Mana, to Brisbane Festival from September 19–22 for its Australian debut. Noa Wertheim was born in America in 1965 and moved to Netanya, Israel at the age of three. One of four girls, she was brought up in a religious family. Her father was a TV director and encouraged creativity. “Even though we had a religious upbringing, our home was a very open place for art because of him,” she shares. “He was very special. He was a real artist. On Saturday nights we were all dancing and acting.” Noa trained in dance briefly from the ages of ten to 12, but gave it up for religious reasons until the age of 21, when she returned from three years of military service. She recalls walking through Jerusalem and pondering her next move. “I was thinking: ‘What should I do?’ This age is difficult. What is your profession? I saw an advert about a summer dance course, so I went there and I did it.” Dance was the perfect fit for Noa who graduated from the Rubin Academy of Music in 1990. She joined the Jerusalem Tamar Dance Company where she met Adi. He had danced with the Batsheva Ensemble and the Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company after completing four years of military service. Noa and Adi decided to create a dance piece together, titled Vertigo, which drew from Adi’s experience of vertigo while in the air force. The piece was a hit and won the 1992 On the Way to London award from the British Council. This early success inspired them to found Vertigo

Dance Company in 1992. When asked her vision for Vertigo Dance Company, Noa laughs as she admits there was no grand plan. Like her dance pieces, the company evolved organically. “It was so naive,” Noa observes of her and Adi’s early approach to dancing as a career. “I don’t work from vision. I live in the minute.” Noa recalls they trusted their instincts. “We saw that something was happening so we said: ‘Let’s continue.’ Then my husband – who is more visionary – said he’d give me the title of choreographer. And I said: ‘Are you crazy? I do one work and you call me a choreographer?’” she laughs. “Even today I still don’t see this side of me. Because I’m doing so many things and I’m not a title person. I just do it. Just like you buy bread, you walk and you brush your teeth – I go into the studio and research. This is me. I like it.” Over the past 20 years, Noa has helped position Vertigo Dance Company as one of the world’s best troupes and one of Israel’s cultural gems. She has garnered a reputation for creating dance work that is daring, athletic and mesmerising. Her award-winning choreography subtly champions values of community and social and environmental consciousness. Vertigo’s Power of Balance in 2001 was a collaboration with British choreographer Adam Benjamin and involved disabled dancers, while Birth of Phoenix in 2004 was performed outdoors on dirt ground

under a transparent geodesic dome. Meanwhile, Mana – which was created in 2009 and will be performed at Brisbane Festival – is a mesmerising and mystical piece based on the Jewish text, The Zohar. To Noa, it “has a very special atmosphere” and is an exploration of the breath – of the energy of fullness and emptiness. Impressively, Noa has also founded the inspiring Vertigo Eco-Art Village – a professional dance school, eco school and artist residency located in Israel’s rural Elah Valley. Noa lives there with Adi, their three sons, and Noa’s three sisters and their families. She notes it is a safe and peaceful space. “I am apolitical. I’m very human and don’t like to touch politics at all. I’m an island here in my country.” Noa says she cares about her work because it enables her to communicate with people. “I want a dialogue. I want people to open something in their mind and to have an experience. It’s very important for me that the people coming to see Vertigo won’t try to understand but to really experience – just to be with their emotions and their feelings and their sensations more than thinking so much about ideas.” Asked her greatest achievement, Noa shares: “To stay very human and modest in this big thing we are doing. I’m happy that the company is growing. I think it is beautiful for me to have the company established and to have this village. I feel great.”

As well as being the first feature film for director Benh Zeitlin, Beasts of the Southern Wild is also Dwight Henry’s first acting job. A baker by trade, Dwight fortuitously owned a bakery across the road from the studio of film production company, Court 13. Despite his lack of acting experience, Dwight attracted the eye of the team at Court 13 with his pragmatic nature and endearing smile. After agreeing to an audition, Dwight was cast as Hushpuppy in Beasts of the Southern Wild. A tale that blends drama with fantasy, the story takes place in a community isolated by a levee. As the weather becomes increasingly ferocious, a young girl believes she can harmonise nature to save her sick father, Hushpuppy, and her beloved home.
While Zoë Saldana was born in the creative city of New York, it wasn’t until she moved to the Dominican Republic with her family at the age of ten that she developed a taste for dancing and theatre. After moving back to New York City at 17, she was spotted by a scout to play Eva in the ballet film Centre Stage. Since then, she has starred in a number of roles, with the most notable being the part of Neytiri in Avatar. In The Words, Zoë plays Dora – the love interest of aspiring writer Rory (Bradley Cooper). After Rory finally fulfils his dream of publishing a best-selling novel, he is caught for plagiarism. Whilst facing his consequences, Rory discovers that his career ambitions may not be as important as his personal life.
For a young Garrett Hedlund, who spent his childhood on a cattle farm, rambling wide-open spaces provided his fertile imagination with plenty of room to run wild. A fitting foundation for the aspiring actor, Garrett has since found himself slotting into a diverse mixture of roles in films including Troy, Country Strong and TRON: Legacy. Playing the impulsive Dean Moriarty in On the Road, Garrett continues to explore his creativity as an actor. In the film adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s famed novel, the spirit of the Beat Generation is personified through maverick Dean and his friend Sal (Sam Riley). Together, Dean and Sal expend their youthful energy travelling across the USA in the hope of finding a deeper meaning for their lives.

Putting the drumsticks to rest for a while, Boy & Bear’s drummer Tim Hart has picked up the guitar and warmed up his vocal cords in preparation for his solo venture. Being a singer-songwriter at heart, Tim penned an album’s worth of his own lyrics whilst touring the world with Boy & Bear. Since returning to Australia, the artist has put the finishing touches on his first solo album, Milling the Wind. In his upcoming performance at Black Bear Lodge, Tim will captivate with his gentle guitar skills and pensive lyrics.
Still retaining their original monikers, Boundary Streets in West End and Spring Hill are a reminder of a time when indigenous people were not permitted to enter the city after dark. Harking back to these days, Boundary Street is a jazz-inspired performance set in West End in 1942. Jazz tunes lure Australian women and AfricanAmerican servicemen alike into a West End nightclub and, while some friendships blossom, an undertone of racial tension simmers. The show’s music is composed and performed by jazz virtuoso, James Morrison.
Take a sojourn to sun-soaked Italy from the comfort of Palace Cinemas at this year’s Italian Film Festival. The annual film festival returns to Brisbane this year with a selection of films that encapsulates the ever-effervescent spirit of Italy. The program of films includes the opening film Welcome to the North – the sequel to one of last year’s most popular films, the cheeky comedy Welcome to the South – while the program of entertainment features cooking demonstrations, wine tastings and live entertainment.
When we are immersed in our daily existence, it can be easy to miss the little quirks of everyday life. For satirical English photographer Martin Parr, however, the small oddities of Australian culture were the inspiration for his No Worries exhibition. The photographs were taken in Broome, Port Hedland and Fremantle, and document Australians at work and play. By playing on Australian cliches – such as the phrase ‘no worries’, RSL clubs and beach barbecues – Martin provides an outsider’s view of Australia.

›I became a performer because ... when I was five years old I asked my parents if I could go to ballet lessons. They made me wait until I was six years old and I thought that one year waiting was a year wasted! So, every year that I am able to remain in the dance world as an artist is a year I live with a full heart. ›My creativity comes from ... participating and not participating, asking questions, watching, listening, being silent, travelling and living. I’m a bit of a loner and an observer, preferring to sit quietly and watch the world pass by. I suppose I see dance in places that most people don’t. ›I ‘fuel’ my creativity by ... asking questions about the way we live and interact with the world. I look forward to the summer break each year when I can sleep, go fishing, read and give my mind space to sow the seeds of new work. ›I love my job because ... I am surrounded by artists who make a commitment to something bigger than themselves. The dancers at Dancenorth are phenomenal human beings and I’m constantly inspired by their discipline, dedication and commitment to the work we create together. ›Through my work, I would like to ... present questions about the way we participate in society and the issues that we face in the 21st century. I delve into subjects that we all experience, but don’t always talk about on a day-to-day level. ›Favourite filmmaker: Wim Wenders ›Director who inspires me: Krzysztof Kieslowski ›Favourite actor: Mathieu Amalric ›Most played on my iPod: Nick Cave ›A designer I love: Japanese architect Satoshi Okada ›Makes me laugh: Catherine Tate ›Artist I most admire: Nick Cave

HOTEL SEZZ, PARIS
A walk through the streets of the 16th arrondissement of Paris is prone to inducing a montage of filmic flashbacks, with iconic movies such as Last Tango in Paris, Krzysztof Kieslowski’s Three Colours: Blue, and even Inception all showcasing parts of the polished ‘BoBo’ neighbourhood. But away from the glamour of celebrity, tucked within one of the elegant buildings of the quarter, Hotel Sezz is a serenely modern boutique dwelling that provides welcome repose from a solid day’s wanderings.
Leonard Cohen’s distinct baritone sashays from the stereo speakers as the taxi driver hums along in tune. The perfect soundtrack to a rainy day in Paris, he tells me. Already this taxi ride from Charles de Gaulle has been unique from any other I’ve had, and not only because I’ve been testing my conversational French for the first time in Paris. The topics of discussion (all initiated by my driver, Pierre) have already covered my preferred style of underwear (and what colour) and whether European men are better lovers than Australian men. While I try to attribute the intimacy of our conversation to a quirk of my host country’s culture, I am quite relieved when we finally enter the immaculate streets of the 16th arrondissement and pull up outside Hotel Sezz. Pierre gives me his number with the promise that it would be a pleasure to give me a ‘private and special tour’ of Paris. I smile and bid him goodbye, happy to escape and quietly sure that it’s an offer he makes to all of his female passengers. At 26 rooms, Hotel Sezz is rather understated in its presence just off Avenue du Président Kennedy, which winds along the Seine on Paris’ right bank. You need only stroll 30 seconds for a glimpse of the city’s most famous landmark, its metallic point piercing the clouds across the river. But the hotel itself remains tucked away in a side street exuding a peaceful
62 map magazine
ambience that contrasts emphatically with the swarms of tourists milling about across the nearby Pont de Bir-Hakeim. The serene atmosphere grows as I step through the entryway of the hotel. But something seems amiss, and as I rack my tired brain to elucidate exactly what, a smiling grey-suited gent relieves me of the menagerie of luggage that has followed me across two hemispheres. He ushers me to an elegant Zen-like lounge where I sink gratefully into the sofa while I await his return. Finally the clouds around my brain begin to dissipate and I realise what is missing in the hotel’s petite lobby: the enormous reception desk and steady stream of guests, porters and maids that usually greets you in Parisian hotels. Built into one of the floridly charming buildings signature to the ‘BoBo’ (Bohemian-Bourgeois) arrondissement in which it takes residence, Hotel Sezz offers a designer refuge without the pomp of the city’s larger, more staid hotels. The sheen of its interior facade yields no weathered surfaces, cracks or stains, and is instead fastidiously fresh. A glamorous spiral staircase snakes up the centre of the building, each floor’s landing like an ornate vertebra distinguished by the art on the wall. As my charming Gallic host shows me to my room, I soon gather that the members of staff of Hotel Sezz are well-practised in the art of discretion, appearing only in the moments when

they are needed to solve the quandaries or satisfy the whims of guests. The rest of the time they somehow blend into the interiors, making themselves graciously scarce so as not to disrupt the air of serenity that lingers throughout the luxury hotel. After 48 hours travelling, I would have found any room with a bed to be a welcome paradise. But my suite on the building’s fifth floor is a sight for weary eyes and an aesthetic relief from the grey interiors and stale air of an endless series of airports. A calming palette of grey, black, red and white is splashed across the room, with sleek ebony floorboards and tactile slate walls preserving the tranquillity. The rain showerhead – a cherished sight to any exhausted traveller – shimmers in the bathroom, with a generous kitty of Acqua di Parma grooming products making it all the more inviting. But, for now, the most eye-catching element of the room is the thoughtfully placed plate of fresh pastries upon the table – a fitting first meal in France. I nudge open the double glass doors to let in a breath of morning air and a steady stream of sunshine pours into the room, signalling that the rain has cleared. Settling into a chair on the balcony, I delve into the buttery pastries and let each flake melt deliciously into my tongue.
