you are here, brick bay

Oct. 2017 | Architectural Folly Competition, Top 5 Finalist Situated on the popular sculpture trail of Brick Bay Vinyard north of Auckland, the annual design & build competition calls for contemporary interpretations of the folly. The title, ‘you are here’, is reflective of the key design intent: to activate the senses, encouraging visitors to be aware of body and spatial perception and of the here and now. The proposal aims to delight and deceive the

sensory perceptions of visitors in three stages: externally (from various viewpoints around the trail), through (on approach, within and leaving) and internally (implied semi-encolosed spaces). Perceptions in each stage are challenged and distorted, due to the permeable and repetitive structure of the walls, coupled with bold and striking colours - carefully selected for their strength alone and for their intensity in combination.

June 2017 | Master Thesis Urban Design Proposal My thesis studied urban design principles with a focus on activating urban spaces for people. Specifically, I looked at how these principles can be applied to deindustrialised sites, plentiful and valuable in Shanghai, yet threatened by urban regeneration processes. The typology of former Shanghai industrial clusters were found to have spatial qualities inherently suitable for

reuse, qualities which are detrimentally absent from the typical large-scale and homogenous new urban development. The resulting design is a proposal for the adaptive reuse of the former Tianzhang Paper Factory to a mixed-use subcentre, or “social hub. The three defining principles are: active and fine-grained accessibility, human-scale public space to stay in and to pass through and diverse and interdependent functions.

birthing centre, copenhagen June. 2014 | Masters design studio, exchange KADK The architecture strives to create a warm, humanscale and homely environment - in contrast to the standardised maternity wards of hospitals - where child birth can be celebrated in a protective, nurturing and supportive community. The facility is split into five

buildings, to house the five main activities: labour, family, common, consulation and movement. It is an introverted building, where the focus is on the common internal courtyard. The facade tectonics are an important element of the design, providing depth and richness, as well as control of privacy and transparency.

city centre. At the mountain’s peak, this shelter was developed to express the bipolarities of enclosure and exposure, and the space inbetween. The drawings were entirely hand-drawn in pencil, and two sections of the design were modelled using concrete and plaster.
