SMALL TOWN BUSINESS IS SMALL TOWN CULTURE’S BEST DEFENSE By Kyle Lang Canby is on the cusp. We exist in the space between a rural small town and the suburb of a small city. We are close to freeways and yet a little off the beaten path. The folks who find us usually do so intentionally. The people who live here definitely do so intentionally. As more folks find us, and as we grow as a city, we need to make sure that we are preserving the best aspects of the culture that makes Canby unique. No matter what your reason for choosing to live in Canby, in order to make sure it stays the place you love, you need to support the local businesses that make Canby a unique place to live. The Canby Area Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to preserving this culture while pushing Canby to grow and prosper as a vital location for both businesses and residents to land. It is important that we enlist you, our residents, in this effort as well. Without your help, the aspects of Canby’s culture that you love the most might wither and die on the vine, but we all have a choice in this. We all have agency and responsibility in terms of how we interact with our larger community. The Best of Canby is just one outreach to mobilize you, the resident, to realize how important and how unique our town is in the region. By enlisting your help in voting for the Best of Canby, we’ve engaged you in the process of knowing what is available locally. This isn’t our first effort in this vein, and it definitely won’t be the last. The strength of our community is inherently tied to the state of our local economy. One need only look at what happens to small towns during busts like the timber bust, mining busts, or the auto bust to see what happens to communities that don’t have a diverse and vibrant economy to support them. Later in this magazine, you will find some information on how shopping local helps support our community. We encourage you to take a look. The Canby Area Chamber of Commerce is an unceasing advocate for local business. We believe in the good that comes from a diverse and vibrant local economy, but we need your help to make the dream come alive. We are supporting the businesses that are here, we are bringing new businesses to town, and we are looking out for you, the resident, in each of these efforts as well. As you thumb through these pages and celebrate the winners, make sure to make a mental list of new places you can visit to do your part in keeping Canby strong and vital.

HELLO CANBY! The magazine you hold in your hands is the result of a lot of hard work by a lot of different people, and I’m not talking about us at the Chamber office. I’m talking about the hard work that goes into running a business. This magazine is full of special businesses worthy of recognition, but the directory toward the back is where you will find ALL the worthy businesses. We hope you take some time to consider supporting these businesses by shopping local however you can. The Best of Canby promotion came about as the result of the following question: How can we help Canby residents familiarize themselves with area businesses? The Best of Canby contest was born out of that question. As anyone knows, first time efforts are hard. The first day at the gym is hard. The first time driving a car is hard. The Best of Canby is no exception. We tried our best to include the widest array of Chamber members in our online survey. As a result, some of our categories ran a little broad, and we will be working to improve the survey year after year. Many of you just discovered your local chamber via this promotion. So, if you don’t know what a Chamber of Commerce does, join the club. I was uneducated when I came onboard a year ago. For those of you who are curious, a Chamber of Commerce is an independent not-for-profit that supports local businesses in an area. We do this via the support of our member businesses, and
We are a catalyst for growth within the local business community, but that growth shows in larger ways: not as a creator of jobs but as a partner in growing the businesses and business leaders who create the jobs that strengthen our communities. Through education and speakers, we bring new information so members can implement new ideas into their businesses. By advocating within the legislature, we work toward a legislative landscape that is business friendly. By providing them marketing support, we raise profiles within the local community. THIS is what the Chamber does, and this magazine is just ONE of our new efforts. We hope you enjoy the magazine and leave it out for your guests to browse, read and re-read. Use it as a guide to great places around Canby. This is just one tool we hope to provide you, our residents. It won’t be the last.

Our Community
BEST LANDMARK WAIT PARK
Wait Park has long been a cornerstone of our community. It has served many uses over time. It has held a youth center, housed the Riverside Schoolhouse, held a dance hall, and other community amenities. But the installation of the gazebo has now become a central feature in our landscape, playing host to all kinds of events from Slice of Summer to Light Up the Night. It is a photographic destination for professionals and selfie-takers alike. The park now plays host to families who use the playground equipment and picnic in the sun. An emblem of small-town Americana nostalgia, Wait Park stands as a representation of our community values made tangible in our day-to-day travels around our historic downtown. 8
Best of Canby Guide 2019
BEST PLACE TO WORSHIP CAN BY FOURSQUARE
There is possibly nothing more personal than where we worship, but the act is also a community experience. Canby Foursquare Church clarified that they are not in competition with other churches, but would rather celebrate the other churches and foster their ongoing commitment to “walk in harmony with one another while we do that.” In Canby since 1978 and led by Ron Swor, they’ve cultivated a community “that have made people feel safe and welcome when they come [to Canby Foursquare].” With a reputation for good partnerships amongst community, Canby Foursquare is “proud to have walked alongside other churches and organizations in our community to sponsor Canby Cares over the last few years… [and] privileged to host several recovery meetings throughout the week, as well as partner with local first responders for on-campus training sessions.” No matter your religious affiliation, Canby Foursquare’s mission “of loving Jesus and loving everyone who comes on campus” is a welcome one.
BEST NOT FOR PROFIT THE CANBY CENTER
The Canby Center, located on S.W. 2nd Avenue, took the prize amongst stiff competition. With programming designed to support our most fragile community members, The Canby Center works daily to provide services that support a wide range of issues from education to clothing, from employment services to food support. The Canby Center’s mission supports almost all aspects of their clients’ lives. Founded in 2007 as a collaboration of local churches, their programming has grown tremendously. With 265,000 pounds of food and 86,000 pounds of clothing distributed, they meet essential local needs. Their Thriving Together program serves 311 families, emphasizing independence, stability, and sustainability. They do this by coaching essential life skills meant to help break cycles of poverty. Their services are too great to list, but Canby is grateful to have a community partner like The Canby Center planting deep roots right here in our town. Best of Canby Guide 2019 9
BEST EVENT CLACKAMAS COUNTY FAIR & RODEO
The Clackamas County Fair started in Canby back in 1908 and has showcased the agriculture, heritage, and outdoor recreation that makes Clackamas County a place we proudly call home for longer than residents can remember. Each year visitor attendance increases and 2018 brought 158,000 guests to our community! The Clackamas County Fair is unique in that it attracts so many visitors but still keeps that “small town feel” that brings residents and guests back year after year. The Clackamas County Fair also showcases one of the top PRCA Rodeos in the country. With offerings that extend from crafts to local artisans, local businesses to community groups like FFA and 4-H, Clackamas County Fair displays the best this community has to offer. All of this is done in a festive environment where you can entertain the whole family with musical acts, carnival rides, animal demonstrations, and a first-rate rodeo that celebrates our region in a wholly unique way. The Clackamas County Fair & Rodeo is a clear celebration of our area’s history, our vibrancy as a community, and the values that make Canby, and Clackamas County, a truly unique place to live.

BEST BURGER BURGERVILLE
In Canby, there is a lot of nostalgia for Burgerville. Many folks remember the original train booths they sat in as children, but generations of families have been enjoying the quality burgers served at our local Burgerville. With their corporate headquarters located right here in the Pacific Northwest, the Burgerville tradition of bringing fresh food made with local ingredients to our community reflects the area’s values and heritage. They continue to partner with neighboring farms and businesses who share their commitment to quality food and regional vitality. From local, antibiotic-free pork, turkey, beef, and chicken raised on sustainable farms to quality sourced produce, 74% of the products served at Burgerville come from within 400 miles of their headquarters in Vancouver, Washington, and the Canby community continues to appreciate the quality and transparency provided by this hometown institution. Plus, everything just tastes so darn good!
BEST PIZZA
FULTANO’S PIZZA Guy Romine KNOWS pizza. He’s worked in the pizza business since high school, and it’s been his passion ever since. After starting with Fultano’s Pizza in 1977, he got the opportunity to open the Canby location in August of 1985, and they’ve been a part of the Canby landscape ever since. With an emphasis on quality products and community involvement, you’ll find their walls adorned with pictures of the teams and clubs that have enjoyed Fultano’s support – and pizza – over the years. With a lunchtime pizza buffet and salad bar and a full menu of dinner options, there’s never a bad time to stop in at Fultano’s. So after that football game or after Pack The Gym, of which they are a sponsor, come down and share a slice with your family. The Fultano’s team will be there to greet you with a smile. SWEET TREAT BAKER’S PRAIRIE BAKERY
BREAKFAST PAPPY’S GREASY SPOON
MEXICAN RESTAURANT NUEVO VALLARTA
Baker’s Prairie Bakery is a small batch bakery that opened in November of 2018, and they are our freshest faces in the Canby Business scene. With an emphasis on local produce, suppliers, and relationships, they have a business model that ensures their products are made fresh every day. As a socially conscious business, they strive to have as little waste as possible. But the people who win as a result is their customer as this policy ensures the best product possible.
It is no surprise that Pappy’s gets a lot of attention for the breakfast they serve. Their food is fresh, hot, and plentiful, as anyone who eats there can attest. With scratchmade biscuits, homemade corned beef hash, sausage gravy from scratch, and other authentic touches of a real breakfast diner, you’re sure to start your day with everything you need to get to work.
Canby families are familiar with the high-quality service and food that have made Nuevo Vallarta an institution in town. Bright colors and murals adorn the walls, and this sets the mood for what is to come. Their menu is inspired by the Jalisco region of Mexico, and there is plenty to choose from. Their menu ranges from fajitas to carne asada and chile rellenos to enchiladas. Their full-service bar also provides flavored margaritas that transport you to the beach. With long-standing staff, there is always a familiar face to greet you when you arrive. So get your taste from south of the border by visiting our winner for Best Mexican food at Nuevo Vallarta the next time you are hit with a taco craving!
Chessa Fait and her partner Trevor Snook work hard to produce sweet treats that you can’t find anywhere else, so you can find anything from crumbly coffee cakes to gluten-free chocolate dipped macaroons.
Pappy, a.k.a. Mike Merrill, has been slinging hash for decades here in Canby. If you want someone who knows their way around an egg, then the staff of Pappy’s is a great place to start. According to Mike, he will sometimes go through over 70 dozen eggs in a shift!

BEST SPECIALTY COFFEE GWYNN’S COFFEEHOUSE
Many people are passionate about coffee, but few are more passionate than the Gwynn Family. Just over a year ago, the Gwynn family came together to open Gwynn’s Coffeehouse at the corner of N.W. 2nd and N. Holly Street. In that short amount of time, they have endeared themselves to the community, quickly becoming a place to gather for meetings, family outings, and community events. In terms of their products, the family works hard to source quality ingredients and use the best barista techniques to ensure that each customer is pleased with their selection. There is a favorite for every taste. Gwynn’s Coffeehouse is truly a family affair as husband and wife team, Mallory and Sheri Gwynn, share duties with three of their five daughters. You can always find a Gwynn in Gwynn’s Coffeehouse, and that type of family involvement is something that the City of Canby truly appreciates.

LIVING/SERVICES HOPE VILLAGE Hope Village’s 50-acre campus located in Canby, is an active, home-like, “small town atmosphere” with a little something for every older adult who calls it home. Founded in 1983 through a partnership with local churches, Hope Village provides social, spiritual, recreational, and educational services in one vibrant community. Through their partnership with Marquis, health services are available right across the parking lot. They are grateful for the vision of their founders, the Zion and Calvary Mennonite churches, who acted in faith to develop the project and intentionally opened their board to represent other area churches who helped further the mission. Canby, as a community, appreciates their older adults, and is happy to have this idyllic community within a short distance of Canby’s town center. With a full wood shop, community center, putting green, sewing/quilting room, wellness center, and electric train room, all residents can find ways to express themselves.

ELLIE MAY’S BEAUTY BAR
"More than anything, we are all friends. We get to hang out all day doing the things we love. Whether it be catching up with our clients we’ve had for years or meeting a new client for the first time, they all become part of the family."
- ELLIE FORREST, Owner The Best of Canby represents some of the oldest businesses in town, and some of the newest, and Ellie May’s Beauty Bar falls into that latter category. Fresh off their one-year anniversary, Ellie May’s may seem new to Canby, but the people who make it all work are made up of longtime local hair stylists and aestheticians. With a commitment to bringing in the latest and greatest trends in fashions and procedures, these homegrown ladies are committed to supporting the Canby they grew up loving. They want to make Ellie May’s Beauty Bar a place for all Canby’s self-care needs. They combine hair extensions, men’s and women’s haircuts, lash extensions, spray tanning, waxing, facials, and massage to give clients a place to go that provides all these quality services under one roof.
BEST BARBER HOWARD’S BARBERSHOP
Established in 1948, Howard’s Barbershop has been a feature of Canby’s downtown. Situated on 1st Avenue, the classic striped barber pole announces you’ve arrived. Inside, you’ll find a freshly remodeled interior that is the perfect mix of contemporary and classic thanks to the new owners Marc and Karie Crooks. The classic red barber chairs are manned by a staff who knows how to cut it and knows how to tell it: Nikki, Amanda, and Robyn. Walk in, help yourself to a beverage from the fridge, and get caught up on what’s happening around town before your turn in the chair. Howard’s Barbershop captures our small town culture, and takes care of our men both young and old. Best of Canby Guide 2019 25

BEST GROCERY CUTSFORTH’S MARKET
Many local residents have always known Cutsforth’s Market in its current location, but this 91-year-old company has only been located there for half of its lifetime. For years, residents and guests to Canby have enjoyed the superior quality and service that has made this fourth generation business successful. This makes Cutsforth’s Market the oldest supermarket in the Portland Metro Area, and Canby is just lucky enough to have it right here in our own backyard. The current location has been remodeled four times in the last 45 years, and each time Cutsforth’s has expanded on the vision of what it means to be the local grocery store. From full-service deli to organic produce, from the wine bar to the meat counter, you find care and quality everywhere you turn. Canby is uniquely blessed to have this community-minded grocery store, and the residents showed their love by stepping up to vote Cutsforth’s Market Best Grocer in town. 26

BEST HOME IMPROVEMENT SUPPLIES CANBY BUILDERS SUPPLY
Many things about Canby Builders Supply is noteworthy: their history in our community, the fact they are one of a handful of woman-owned lumberyards nationally, and that they are a unique blend of hometown hardware store and full-service lumberyard. According to Doug Wade, their store manager, Canby Builders Supply believes that “rather than just seeing [customers] as a potential sale, we truly want to fill their needs and solve their problems.” With a staff sourced from all the fields of construction and the trades, they have the experience to help residents with every situation from full remodels to simple home repairs. With quality products, knowledgeable staff, and a commitment to Canby, it’s no wonder they were honored by residents as the Best Home Improvement Supplies company.
BEST HOME FURNISHINGS NORTHWEST FURNITURE OUTLET
NW Furniture Outlet has been in the Canby area for over four years. The owners, Rick Palo and Mike Kwok, have serviced Canby and its community for over 35 years. They both believe in having a business that gives back to its community and having a store in Canby was always part of that goal. For Rick, Canby represents the type of community that makes one want to be involved, and they have proven their commitment through their ongoing support of sports teams, events, goodwill projects, donations and fulfilling a wish for a child with cancer. They wake up every day and look forward to helping those in need by filling their family homes with furniture without breaking their budgets. Northwest Furniture Outlet is all about breaking the myth of the “outlet.” For them, being an outlet doesn’t mean they carry cheaply made furniture. It means they carry name brand furniture at outlet prices. Best of Canby Guide 2019 27
BEST PLACE TO BUY A GIFT THE BOOK NOOK
Family is at the heart of The Book Nook. They are truly a family-run business. Megan and Paul Waterman opened The Book Nook in just 300 square feet in December 2017. They have since expanded twice to meet the community demand, and to share their love of books with the community. Their gift area is unique in that it is made up of local artists and crafters who sell their items on consignment. According to Megan, “There are so many talented people living right here in our community and we love being an outlet for them.” There is something for everyone in their shop. You can find candles, papercrafts, custom greeting cards, and let’s not forget the BOOKS. From Vintage, to trade-in, to new, there is something for everyone waiting for you on their shelves.
“Our journey into vintage books and book-related curiosities began as a husband and wife hobby. As our shelves overflowed, we realized we had a desire to share our passion."
- MEGAN WATERMAN, Owner
EBNER’S CUSTOM MEATS From the street, Ebner’s Custom Meats looks like just another traditional butcher shop, but once you walk in the doors, customers discover the truth of the matter. Ebner’s is NOT just another traditional butcher shop. With services that range from custom cuts, game processing, homemade in-house sausage and pepperoni, they check all the boxes of what one hopes to find there. But if you wander to the back corner of the shop, you’ll also find a full-service deli that serves some of the best sandwiches around and service that makes you feel right at home. Mike Ebner comes from a long line of butchers, but he is also passionate about his community, and you’ll often see him out at events serving his specialty BBQ in support of any number of local organizations. Come in to Ebner’s and discovery what all the fuss is about. 28

CUSTOMER SERVICE
EMPLOYER
When asked about her customer service, Joan Monen’s immediate response was to highlight her staff. She said, “The Wild Hare has some of the most dedicated employees around. Many of the managers have been with the company since it opened, and it’s not unusual to see the same faces working as many on staff have been long term employees.” With a dedicated, long-tenured staff, it would be easy to grow complacent, but Joan’s passion for conversation, for community involvement, trickles down to the employees who keep the show running. Joan says, “The staff is dedicated to working hard and making sure each guest is satisfied, every visit. There would be no Wild Hare without it’s amazing team of hard-working employees!” She went on to highlight that it is the local, return customer that makes her business thrive, so she makes sure to model that behavior, and you’ll often see her standing at the end of a booth chatting up a local family. “We love our families and watching the kids grow up through the years. We’ve hired multiple hosts who began coming here when they were still eating off the kid’s menu!” With an experienced staff, a commitment to quality, and a love for the people of the community, it is no wonder Canby voted The Wild Hare Best Customer Service.
If you’ve ever had the opportunity to talk to Frank Cutsforth about his family business, then you’ve heard him talk with resounding affection for his family and his employees who help realize the dream of a local, family-owned grocery store right here in Canby. The Cutsforths have built a unique business, one that emphasizes community, family, and values. That is apparent from the long-standing employees who have stayed with the company for years and years, and the smiles they wear while they do their work. According to Frank, 80% of the staff at Cutsforth’s Market live and work in Canby. The store provides real living wage jobs for multiple families in the area, and they have for decades. Whether it was a person’s first job as a bagger, or they worked through school while cashiering, Cutsforth’s Market has launched hundreds of successful families and individuals in our community. It is their commitment to Canby that has made them successful, and the store’s influence can be felt in our schools, our clubs, our local events, and in the landscape of our downtown. We are grateful to you, Cutsforth Family. Congratulations on a job well done.

BEST MOVER & SHAKER MALLORY GWYNN
Individuals make up every business, every community, and the Best Mover & Shaker award is meant to honor a person who not only navigates many circles, but also draws communities together. Mallory Gwynn is one such example. He has traversed so many circles both personally and professionally, and, according to his wife Sheri, “Whatever arena Mallory finds himself in people are always drawn to him.” His passions include helping his local community via volunteering in schools, at his local church, in gardening clubs, and beyond. His professional life has almost always involved coffee and people, so it is no wonder his latest endeavor, Gwynn’s Coffeehouse, is a roaring success. Mallory wears his passions on his sleeve, and the mix of sincerity and enthusiasm serves as a lightning rod to those around him. Congratulations, Mallory, on providing a great example for our community.
BEST TEACHER BOB HAMMITT
Bob Hammitt is a history teacher. He is also a huge Bruce Springsteen fan. So, he would probably agree with “The Boss” when he said, “The past is never the past. It is always present.” Hammitt teaches at Canby High School and he is always working to make history come alive for his students, but he goes beyond the walls of his classroom and uses his social media and website the Unfinished Pyramid to connect our past with our present. His dedication to making history accessible, interesting, and poignant is palpable in person and online. He actively seeks experiences that enrich his life as well. A seasoned marathoner, an avid traveler, and a voracious reader, Bob Hammitt lives his life and brings his experience to bear on all his lessons both inside and outside of the classroom. 32

Why Go Local?
Best of Canby is, at its heart, an effort to encourage residents to shop local. The effects of Canby residents using local businesses for their goods and services cannot be underestimated. The information presented here are just some of the ways in which shopping local has a substantial positive effect on our community.
PROS TO SPENDING LOCALLY You embrace what makes us unique. You wouldn’t want your house to look like everyone else’s in the U.S. So why would you want your community to look that way? Shopping and spending locally helps the environment. Buying from local business conserves energy and resources in the form of less fuel for transportation, less packaging, and products that you know are safe and well made, because we stand behind them. It also nurtures the community. We know you, and you know us. Studies have shown that local businesses donate to community causes at more than twice the rate of chains and online retailers. Dollars are conserved. Shopping in a local business district means less infrastructure, less maintenance, and more money available to beautify our community. Spending locally instead of online ensures that your dollars are reinvested where they belong – right here! 34

We are all friends and neighbors, and we have a vested interest in knowing how to serve each other. We’re passionate about what we do. Why not take advantage of it? Local patronage is an investment in entrepreneurship. Creativity and entrepreneurship are what the American economy is founded upon. Nurturing local business ensures a strong community. You make Canby a destination. The more interesting and unique we are as a community, the more we will attract new neighbors, visitors and guests. This benefits everyone! Oliver Insurance
