HOW OUR SMALL TOWN CULTURE AFFECTS OUR SMALL BUSINESSES
Mural on The Block
By Kyle Lang
In the first version of this publication back in 2019, we published an article titled “Small Town Business Is Small Town Culture’s Best Defense.” Now it is 2021, and we are putting together a much different magazine, and the title of this article also cries out for a revision. Thus, “How Our Small Town Culture Affects our Small Businesses.” The title of this article reflects two forces that are at play in our community. The first is a really positive force, the second not so much, so I’d like to take a minute to lay these out for your information and edification. This stance is taken after a year of talking with small business owners throughout a pandemic that saw so many ups and downs, and it is meant to be a synthesis of many ideas culled from many conversations. Let’s start with the positive. For many business owners, NEVER in all their years of doing business in Canby have they seen such acts of kindness, charity, and selflessness from their community members and customers. There are stories upon stories of Canby residents stepping up to help a small business owner through large purchases, donations, helping them solve a problem through partnership, or by the simplest kind word given on a hard day. The culture of kindness, which we here at the Canby Area Chamber truly feel is the cornerstone of our community identity, has overwhelmed our business owners and has been a huge reason why they have been able to continue through these hard times. For this, we are proud of you, Canby. Truly, truly proud. The second force at play is a little less positive, but we felt it needed to be addressed. The world of politics has invaded TOO FAR into our normal daily processes. The Canby community has started ascribing politics to the simplest of acts. Wearing a mask and not wearing a mask is seen as a political statement. Obeying the governor’s mandates or not obeying the governor’s mandates is seen as a political statement. In the meantime, most businesses are simply trying to keep their doors open, their staff employed, their bills paid, and their stress level manageable. Over the course of the last year and a half, MANY of our conversations with small business owners have centered around “how this decision will look” to residents in Canby. “Will I appear to be too [insert political persuasion here] if I do this?” We at the Chamber implore you to STOP this, no matter your political perspective. Please stop ascribing politics to the day-to-day operational decisions a business needs to make in order to remain open or in compliance. Business owners have been facing administrative rule changes from the Governor, from OSHA, from OHA, from the Department of Agriculture, the OLCC, and others. Unless stated outright by the business owner, please do not take their actions as being inherently political. It is time to examine our culture as a community, and it is time to decide what kind of community we are going to be. I would hope that our community would choose the path of support over the path of condemnation. It is good for the soul to do good works. It is good for the mind to think kind, supportive thoughts, and it is good for the heart to take care of one’s neighbor. Let’s be neighbors, Canby. That’s what the Insider’s Guide to Canby is all about… being neighbors, celebrating each other, taking pride in community, and getting there together. Thank you for all you do to keep Canby strong and vital.

HELLO CANBY! I said hello, Canby! It’s so nice to have you back where you belong! Welcome to the Insider’s Guide to Canby, our second year putting together this magazine about Canby FOR Canby-ites. This publication was meant to happen in the summer of 2020, but we got a little… sidetracked by this COVID pandemic thing, and we had to push it off a year. We hope you are as excited as we are that things are coming back online and beginning to return to business as usual. This publication is a little different than our last publication, The Best of Canby Magazine, as it contains more information about the community while still preserving all the fun and excitement that our last publication held for small businesses. This magazine is unique in that its sole intent is to

CANBY Recipes Every community is unique, and the flavors of a community are an expression of the people who live there. As a way of celebrating our community, we asked some of our local eateries to provide a recipe that helps express their contribution to our community. Enjoy making these at home, but don’t forget that food almost always tastes better when you don’t have to mess up your own kitchen!
WAYWARD SOUNDWICHES’ CHERMOULA Chermoula is an exotic blend of herbs and spices sure to brighten up any dish. Make sure not to burn the spices when toasting them or the sauce will be overcome with bitter notes. This is a wonderful sauce that Wayward Sandwiches uses with our steak frites. Feel free to use this as a marinade for pork, fish, or chicken, or as a dipping sauce for Summer bbqs. Toss chermoula with some fresh local greens and you will have yourself a nice salad to go with a glass of Wayward wine.
GWYNN’S COFFEEHOUSE PASTA FAGIOLI Ingredients: • 1 lb. ground beef • 3 cans (14 ½ oz each) beef broth • 1 can (28 oz) diced tomatoes, undrained • 1 jar (26oz) spaghetti sauce • 1 ½ cups diced onion • 4 celery ribs, diced • 1 ½ medium carrots, sliced • 1 can (15 oz) cannellini beans, drained • 1 can (15 oz) kidney beans, drained • 1 ½ tsp. minced fresh oregano or ½ tsp. dried oregano • 1 ¼ tsp. minced black pepper

• ½ cup lemon juice
• Salt to taste
• 8 tablespoon fennel seed • 4 tablespoon cumin seed • 4 tablespoon coriander seed • 2 tablespoon garlic • 2 cups canola oil • 2 cups extra virgin olive oil • 1 tablespoon salt Directions: Toast, cool, and grind seeds. Ad broth, tomatoes, spaghetti sauce, celery, carrots, oregano, pepper, and pepper sauce. Cook until vegetables are almost tender. 3. Add beans and parsley. 4. In a separate pot, add pasta. Cutsforth's Market has established a tradition of quality and community, and it is no surprise to us that they took home this year’s prize. Wayward Sandwiches
Dropping into the Canby food scene in 2019, this year’s Best of Canby winner for Best New Business is… Wayward Sandwiches. The brainchild of owner Matt Morrissey and Executive Chef Justin Rouse, Wayward has become a quick favorite of Canby’s downtown. Taking over the first commercial spot in the Dahlia Building, Wayward Sandwiches brought a culinary twist and a fun-filled vibe to their corner of the downtown, and Canby will never be the same again. THE INSIDER’S GUIDE TO GETTING OUTSIDE
Trail Expansion Project Parks are a critical aspect to any city’s livability, and Canby is no exception. One new development within the Canby Parks system is the possible expansion of the Molalla Forest Road. One of Canby’s most used parks, the Molalla Forest Road expansion would provide additional river access and mileage to an already popular park. This expansion became possible in 2017 when the City of Canby received a generous land donation from Bob and Nancy Traverso. The purpose of this donation was to extend Canby’s Logging Road Trail past its current southern point of 13th Avenue and toward Molalla with the hopes that the trail would eventually connect the two cities and become a recreational corridor for residents and visitors alike.
A Brief Overview
This property presents a unique opportunity to create a safe and enjoyable trail that provides access to nature and recreation for the citizens of Canby and the surrounding community, and provides additional recreational tourism opportunities that appeal to walkers, hikers, bikers, equestrian riders, and more. The proposed trail would extend the Logging Road Trail all the way to Macksburg Road. The Development Plan, available through the City of Canby, proposes a phased construction approach and describes users, preferred trail alignment and cost estimates. Further planning, fundraising, permitting, and community outreach will be required to develop the entire
The donation encompassed over 105 acres of land measuring 3.3 miles long, and it would roughly double the length of the existing Logging Road Trail. For many in the community, this development is seen as a welcome extension of a beloved recreational corridor, but there are still many steps to go before the trail could become a reality.
length of the property. Community outreach is important in this project as there are adjacent private property holders, and the City wants to make sure that the project moves forward with an equitable approach and takes into account all parties and potential impacts.

Wooden Shoe Tulip Farm. At the moment this article was written, it is hard to say what events look like. We are in the midst of the push to get to 65% of the population vaccinated so that we can drop to “Low Risk” in Clackamas County, which would be a huge boon for our local events, but at this point we haven’t crossed that line yet. Which isn’t to say that events are impossible.

For instance, Wooden Shoe Tulip Farm was able to modify their Tulip Festival this March to make sure that families and individuals could enjoy the beauty of spring on the farm. Through their ticketing program, they were able to schedule folks’ arrival time and limit the number of people on the farm at any one time. Their ingenuity is to be admired, and it was the first event of the year that really felt like we were climbing out of lockdown and back to a place that felt normal. We applaud their efforts! THE YEAR IN Review
by TYLER FRANCKE
Canby Current / CanbyFirst.com
Those who say nothing ever happens in a small town like Canby have never lived in a small town before – or they just have not been paying attention. Here are a few of the more noteworthy news stories from May 2020 – April 2021, in reverse chronological order. To read the rest of these stories – or catch the latest news from the Canby area – visit CanbyFirst.com, Canby’s locally owned, community-supported, paywall-free news source.
April 2021 Contractor Replaces Family’s Roof for Free After a year of pandemic restrictions and distance learning, not to mention the stressors of wildfire evacuations and storm-induced blackouts, it’s not surprising that you may have times where you feel the roof is coming down on you. Fortunately, for one Canby family, this quite literal fate has been avoided thanks to the local contracting firm Boss Exteriors, which fully replaced the roof of their home – for free. Gabe Callaway, owner of the Canby-based Boss Exteriors, said his company ran a campaign late last year asking for submissions of deserving local families in need of a new roof. The team voted at the company’s Christmas party to award the remarkable gift to Marianne and Brent Taylor, who live with their two children off of Ponderosa Street in northeast Canby.
March 2021 Fans and Families Show Support in Other Ways Barred from the stands due to statewide coronavirus restrictions, Canby Cougar families and supporters are finding other ways to show student-athletes how much they care – whether that’s seeing the teams off when they head out of
town – or filling Cougar Stadium with fake “fans.” Shelli Markell, mother of senior Canby quarterback and defensive back Zack Markell, would never miss a game – home or away – under normal circumstances. And the same is true for a tight-knit network of Cougar faithful: parents, alumni, family and community members. But statewide limits on the numbers of people allowed to be in attendance at indoor or outdoor athletic contests – which schools and leagues are required to strictly enforce – left them little choice. Hence, the Canby Cougar football team taking the field for its season opener to find the stands at Cougar Stadium packed with colorful effigies. The fan stand-ins – or “fand-ins,” if you will – were actually large cardboard boxes with blue and gold Cougar T-shirts draped over them.
February 2021 Community Endures Historic Ice Storm Around 10 p.m. Friday night, Kitty Caul and her husband, John, were relaxing in the living room of their home in Canby’s Village on the Lochs when the lights went out. “We sat for a little bit and then decided we would go get in bed and take our puppies so we would stay warm,” Kitty said.
Courtesy Kitty Caul.
The decision almost certainly saved both of their lives. About 15 minutes later, two 45-foot maple trees crashed through the roof of their home – crushing the very couch where Kitty had been sitting only moments earlier. “They took out about six trusses and dumped about two and a half feet of insulation,” Kitty recalled. “Water was running in all over. We have a huge hole in our living room roof.”
January 2021 Former Co-Star Remembers Actress Cecily Tyson Many felt the impact of Thursday’s loss of Cicely Tyson, the legendary actress whose vivid portrayals of strong Black women shattered racial stereotypes in the 1970s – but far fewer could say they ever shared
26 Canby Area Chamber of Commerce
a stage or screen with the civil rights leader and cultural icon. Among this latter group is Canby resident Malinda Lett Dixon Buckles, a retired stage actress and model in her own right, whose film credits include Mr. Holland’s Opus and the 1976 film Just An Old Sweet Song – starring Robert Hooks and Cicely Tyson. Buckles, who was 18 at the time but playing the part of a 13-year-old girl, shared several scenes with Tyson – then 51 and at the height of her fame, having been nominated for an Oscar and Golden Globe in 1973 for Sounder and having won two Emmys in 1974 for The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman. “She was an amazing, kind, sweet and loving woman,” Buckles said. “I was nervous about the fact that I was so much older than my part, but she made me feel very comfortable with my role.”
December 2020 NBA Superstar’s New Pet Has Canby Roots Known for his flashy passing, Philadelphia 76ers All-Star Ben Simmons has a new partner to play fetch with – one whose championship pedigree traces back to our neck of the woods. The lovable acquisition is a product not of the 76ers front office, but rather, Notta Bear Newfoundlands, a Canby-based kennel of service and therapy dogs. Bethany Davis, Notta Bear owner and founder, said she was contacted by a representative of Simmons, who was looking for a well-bred Newfoundland. Simmons, a native Australian and lifelong animal lover, was in the market for a loving new pet and Newfoundlands
– which have a reputation as “gentle giants” for their sweet dispositions and calm natures – seemed to fit the bill. “Also, he’s nearly 7 feet tall, so he didn’t want to have to do a lot of bending to pet,” Davis quipped.
November 2020 Family Honors Father’s Legacy with Light Display The world is a little less bright without Clay Fillis in it. But thanks to his family and the legacy he left behind, his home will shine as brightly as ever this Christmas season. Fillis was the man behind one of Canby’s most well-known holiday light shows, which he built at his home on Northeast 10th Avenue and Ivy Street each year and even set to music.
Head coach James Heckathorn said the team had voted to honor the Peaches and the other athletes of the AAGPBL when they took the field at Keizer Little League Field to compete in the Halloween Scream NAFA Softball Tournament — which they won. “We are teaching the girls about the women of Cooperstown who inspired the movie but who also broke barriers in professional sports,” Coach Heckathorn said. “We have been taking inspiration from history and the movie.” That has included sharing with the girls the original guidelines AAGPBL players were expected to follow, an amazing historical document that is also on display in the National Baseball Hall of Fame Library.
When he died of sudden cardiac arrest back in March, some presumed the display might have passed with him. But his family was determined to bring a little light to this corner of the world – at a time when so many need it. “It took an army to set up what it took one man weeks to do,” his daughter, Kayla Spicer, said on Facebook. “2020 may look a lot different from last year but we are hoping to bring a little joy to our amazing community.”
October 2020 Softball Team Wins Tourney, Rocks Classic Threads There’s no crying in 10-andunder fast-pitch softball! Nor was there any crying for the Canby Rebels 10U softball team this weekend, as they donned “Rockford Peaches” uniforms inspired by the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League – made famous by the 1992 film A League of Their Own.

September 2020 Wilson Construction Crews Fight Wildfires on Front Lines One can only imagine the hesitancy employees of the Canby-based Wilson Construction might have felt in approaching their boss to ask if they could be exempted from work to fight fires in the rural

communities in which they live – and to bring with them hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of the company’s equipment. Actually, longtime Wilson fleet operator Scott Carr and his comrades had initially asked for the use of just one truck. But Don Wilson – president of the electrical utility contractor and son of the company’s founder, Matt O. Wilson – wasn’t having it. “Don said, ‘Take the guys. Take the equipment. Take whatever you need,'” recounted Tony Helbling, logistics manager for Wilson. “‘Go where you need to go, and do what you need to do.’ It was pretty cool. Honestly, I think they were a little surprised, but that’s the just the kind of guy Don is.” About 10 Wilson employees have been aiding in the firefighting efforts for several days now, working to contain the sprawling Riverside Fire and other blazes that have ripped through rural Clackamas County.
August 2020 Canby Grad’s Short Film Named Oregon’s Best at Festival Macie’s Parade, a short film written and directed by professional filmmaker and Canby High School grad Cooper Fitch, has been named Best Oregon Film at the Oregon Short Film Festival, which is set for this week in central Oregon. Normally held in Portland, the festival’s 170 entries are being screened outdoors, drive-in-style at the historic Sunshine Mill Winery and Drive-Up Theater in The Dalles due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Fitch’s 2020 film Macie’s Parade took top honors amid a crowded field of work by gifted Oregon filmmakers, including Anchitta Noowong’s August, Marissa’s Dingman’s How Speaking About Suicide Can Save Lives, Faranak Sahafian’s Mirror and Melissa Gregory Rue’s Esperanza’s Turn – which has been a force on the independent circuit this year. The film chronicles the all-too-relatable struggles of a family matriarch – the titular Macie – and her struggles to keep her family (and herself) together during a tense holiday visit by the kids and grandkids.

July 2020 Oregon’s Oldest House is Being Restored near Canby It’s been many things: a house, an animal shelter, a machine shed, the historic Fox Granary. Now, it’s a place for the imagination to wander, as one’s eyes trace the ancient wood grains and the marks of ax blades that fell more than 200 years ago. But the Molalla Log House, which is in the process of being restored at the Hopkins Demonstration Forest near Canby, is something else as well: an unsolved mystery. Who built it? When, and why? These questions have consumed many experts on the history of the Pacific Northwest – and some of the answers have helped redefine it. Early evidence – through cultural anthropology, dendrochronology and other scientific analysis of the timbers themselves – suggesting that the structure could be well over 200 years old stunned historians, according to project steward Pam Hayden, who, along with pioneer log house restorer Gregg Olson, has been one of the driving forces to preserve it for the past 30 years.
June 2020 Canby Man Builds Tribute Mustang for Veterans Canby resident Gary Alexander will be the first to tell you: His car is much more than just a car. The highly customized 2005 Ford Mustang GT proudly bears the name of its model, of course, but if you look closely, you’ll see another word prominently featured amid the red, white and blue paint job, bald eagles, American flags and other patriotic imagery: Tribute.

And that’s exactly what it’s meant to be: Alexander’s “Tribute Mustang” is a tribute to all veterans and first responders – particularly those who served during the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York City. The car has been a staple at the Canby 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony most years. “My goal is never forgetting our veterans, thanking our first responders for the good that they do for us every day,” Alexander said. “We’ve got to have them. We can’t lose them. Unfortunately, there are a couple of bad ones here and there, but you can’t label everybody as being bad.”

May 2020 Willamette Egg Delivers 65,000 Pounds of Food to Canby It was one of those cold, drizzly Saturdays that reminds you why they talk about “April showers” – even after the week of gorgeous, early summer weather we just had. At 7 a.m., Lt. Chris Cohoon was just coming off shift with the Colton Rural Fire Protection District, when he hopped into the cab of a truck for Willamette Egg Farms in Canby, for whom he works as a driver. Working at 7 a.m. on a Saturday, especially after an all-night shift at the firehouse, is not normally something to get excited about. But today would be different. Cohoon wasn’t delivering eggs, dairy, produce and other products to restaurants, stores or warehouses. He and Willamette Operations Manager Dann Barnard were headed to The Canby Center, where volunteers were waiting to deliver hundreds of boxes of food straight into the hands of local families in need.

NOTEWORTHY FIGURES IN
Canby History
by TYLER FRANCKE
Canby Current / CanbyFirst.com Founded more than 150 years ago in 1870, the city of Canby boasts a rich heritage of agriculture, arts, commerce, politics, education and athletic achievement. Some of Oregon’s most interesting and influential figures have called Canby home over the years. In this piece, we’ll look at just a few.
M.J. Lee
throughout eastern Oregon and Washington.
Born Millard Jerome Lee but known only by his initials because he didn’t care for the name “Millard,” M.J. Lee was a dynamic figure who would gain a few flashy nicknames during the course of his remarkable life — including the “Father of Irrigation” and “Mr. Canby.”
The city’s first power plant, which Lee and his partners built on the Molalla near what is now Community Park, was less successful. The flow proved too weak to generate sufficient electricity. But the plant’s 30-inch concrete walls would stand for 70 years – even resisting an attempt to demolish it by 200 sticks of dynamite in 1959.
Lee was the grandson of Canby pioneer and founder Philander Lee, who platted the city’s first 24 blocks on land he sold to the railroad for that purpose. Involved in virtually every aspect of municipal life, he almost singlehandedly spurred much of the town’s early growth. In the early 20th century, the soil of the Canby prairie was thought too sandy to be capable of irrigation. M.J. Lee – who was found of saying, “Irrigation is King” – proved them wrong, constructing a flume line from the Molalla River that brought much prosperity to thirsty fields in the growing community. He went on to run a successful irrigation company and install systems
He published the city’s first newspaper, which he called the Willamette Valley Irrigator, and helped organized its first municipal water system. He also ran the first coach service between Canby and Oregon City, long before Highway 99E was constructed. He served as a state representative and was on just about every city and county board you could serve on at some point in his life. He even invented a drag saw you could operate with bicycle pedals. In his earlier years, he had been a champion cyclist, winning scores of races across the Pacific

Northwest. As a boy, he won bets bicycling from Canby to Portland and back. Suffering from cancer, he was known to still take his daily bicycle trip into town up until the day before he died, at age 78.
Aaron Wait Aaron Emmons Wait may be best known to many in Canby as the namesake of the town’s beloved Wait Park, but he was much more than that. Wait served as the first chief justice of the state’s Supreme Court and led a fascinating life. Born in Whately, Massachusetts, on the day after Christmas in Canby Historical Society 1813, Wait was raised by his uncle and grandfather. He earned his way through school as an apprentice broom maker and became a teacher, before an interest in farming, politics and law led him down the Oregon Trail. Wait opened a law practice in Oregon City and was personally asked by Oregon Governor George Abernethy to edit the fledgling Oregon Spectator – the first American newspaper west of the Rocky Mountains, which would become the region’s leading political paper. He served as an assistant commissary under the command of Gen. Joel Palmer during the Cayuse War before joining the Gold Rush of 1849, where he was said to have done relatively well for himself on the banks of the Feather River near Sacramento. Wait was elected to the Oregon Supreme Court in 1858 and was named chief justice the following year – the same year the Oregon Territory was granted statehood. By then, the high court had existed for several years, and Wait was, technically, the fourth chief justice in its history. But he was the first to serve after Oregon became a state. Later in life, Wait returned to law, politics and journalism, serving as mayor of Portland and running an unsuccessful campaign for Congress, until his voice began to fail him in 1870. He retired to his farm in Canby, where he worked the land until his eventual death on Dec. 12, 1898, at the age of 85. Portions of his land were later donated to the city for Wait Park and for what would eventually become the Clackamas County Fairgrounds.
Glendolene Vinyard Step aside, Katniss Everdeen. Meet Glendolene Vinyard, a legendary archer in her own right – and one of the most remarkable women our town has ever produced. Accolades came early to Vinyard, the only daughter of local businessman and longtime Canby mayor J.R. Vinyard and Canby Women’s Civic Club leader Hazel Phillips Vineyard. In 1916, at just 10 months, she was named “Prettiest Baby” of the Clackamas County Fair. Later, she taught herself archery while working at Camp Onahlee in Molalla, and in no time, she was dusting all comers at competitions around the state. Archery was a big deal in those days; newspapers covered the tournaments in breathless detail. And though other bowsmiths could challenge her in terms of accuracy – no one could touch Vinyard when it came to distance. In 1938, she smashed the women’s national flight record with a 395-yard bomb at Sherwood field. It would become something of a habit for the “strong-armed girl from Canby,” as newspapers soon began calling her. Two years later, she stunned the crowds at the 61st Annual National Archery Tournament in Portland, with a 423-yard junket that no one – man or woman – could equal. She would ultimately win 56 trophies in archery, including three national championships, and for two years was the undisputed world long distance champion for women in archery. And she was just getting started. A few years later, she decided to try her hand at bowling. She would find a talent for that too, winning yet another championship in 1948. In 1960, she joined the Canby Historical Society Mazamas, a Portlandbased mountaineering organization founded in 1894. A diagnosis of multiple sclerosis barely slowed Glendolene down, as she earned her membership by summiting the 10,363-foot South Sister, the tallest of central Oregon’s famed Three Sisters.
Insider’s Guide to Canby 2021-2022 31
She went on to participate in numerous events, and in 1970, at the age of 54, led a mountaineering outing to the Ruby Mountains of Nevada. When she wasn’t sighting down a bowstring, she was usually at Ninety-One School, where she taught third grade and PE for three decades. Glendolene Vinyard Nieland, fourth-generation and lifelong resident of Canby, died April 9, 1996, at the age of 80.
Bill Brown
bought 1,000 sheep in the Willamette Valley and moved them to the Oregon high desert – where the legend of Bill Brown would take shape. After the devastating winter of 1859, Brown bought out his brothers' shares in the operation so they could return to the Willamette Valley. One of his brothers – Henry – would become known as the “Potato King of Clackamas County” and later donate the 30 acres that would become the permanent home of Canby High School.
“Tall and gaunt as a wind-whipped juniper tree” and “tougher than suntanned rawhide,” he was destined to become a legend – one of the most colorful figures in eastern Oregon and, at one time, one of the richest men in the Pacific Northwest. Newspapers would dub him the “Horse King of the West” and the “Millionaire Horse King.”
In the following years, Brown rebuilt his sheep herd until his operation had approximately 22,000 animals. He also owned vast swaths of land in Crook, Harney, Lake and Deschutes counties – with his holdings estimated at between 34,000 and 64,000 acres of range land.
Of course, what he was most known But, to those who knew him from the Canby Historical Society for was the horses. At the peak of his farm he and his four brothers and two empire, he managed herds totaling sisters grew up on outside Canby, he was just Bill more than 7,000 horses – all branded with his Brown — or “Old Bill” in his later years. signature Horseshoe Bar mark – which was In 1882, Brown and his two younger brothers recognizable anywhere in the state of Oregon.

He sold thousands of horses to the U.S. Army, for $80 to $100 a head, and his annual income was estimated at $140,000 – a sum worth several million in today’s dollars. But Old Bill’s fortune was not made to last. The price of and demand for horses dropped dramatically following the rise of the automobile, and Brown refused to diminish his herds or cut loose employees who depended on him for their incomes. By 1931, he was almost bankrupt, and in 1935, Brown sold his last property and remaining livestock and moved to the Methodist Old People's Home in Salem. He died penniless on Jan. 11, 1941, at the age of 85, and is buried at Zion Memorial Cemetery in Canby. His legacy would live on, however, through the incredible philanthropy he had shown. He gave many generous gifts to a wide range of religious and educational institutions, especially the Methodist Episcopal Church and Willamette University. He had even helped start the charitable home that he would later die at – with a $10,000 donation he’d made 25 years earlier.

Best of Canby is, at its heart, an effort to encourage residents to shop local. The effects of Canby residents using local businesses for their goods and services cannot be underestimated. The information presented here are just some of the ways in which shopping local has a substantial positive effect on our community.
PROS TO SPENDING LOCALLY You embrace what makes us unique. You wouldn’t want your house to look like everyone else’s in the U.S. So why would you want your community to look that way? Shopping and spending locally helps the environment. Buying from local business conserves energy and resources in the form of less fuel for transportation, less packaging, and products that you know are safe and well made, because we stand behind them. It also nurtures the community. We know you, and you know us. Studies have shown that
local businesses donate to community causes at more than twice the rate of chains and online retailers. Dollars are conserved. Shopping in a local business district means less infrastructure, less maintenance, and more money available to beautify our community. Spending locally instead of online ensures that your dollars are reinvested where they belong – right here! We are all friends and neighbors, and we have a vested interest in knowing how to serve each other. We’re passionate
about what we do. Why not take advantage of it? Local patronage is an investment in entrepreneurship. Creativity and entrepreneurship are what the American economy is founded upon. Nurturing local business ensures a strong community. You make Canby a destination. The more interesting and unique we are as a community, the more we will attract new neighbors, visitors and guests. This benefits everyone! Adapted from IndieBound.
