The Grants Pass & Josephine County Chamber of Commerce works every day to make our community a place where businesses can grow and prosper, where people want to raise their families and tourists want to visit. To provide this to our businesses and community, the Chamber has several networking events and committees.

Networking Opportunities BUSINESS FOR BREAKFAST-GREETERS This active group of businesses and organizations start their Wednesday mornings early at 8:00 am to 9:00 am with some laughs and announcements about what is going on in the community. Each week is hosted by a business at their location or the location of their choice, that can accommodate 70-100 people. So, check the calendar to see who the business host is this week and location. Each attendee has one opportunity to promote their products and services.

BUSINESS AFTER HOURS Business after Hours is the premiere networking event for business professionals. It is generally hosted by a business in a different location once a month from 5:30pm-7:00 pm. A great opportunity to discuss and share ideas while learning about other local businesses. It is a relationship-building experience held in a relaxed setting that benefits you and your company through added contacts and resources. Stay for 20 minutes or enjoy the full event. Business After Hours are typically held the third Thursday of each month.

This group is for young professionals in the target age range of 21-45 who are looking for networking opportunities with other young professionals, connections to the community and business leaders, community engagement, and professional development. The Young Professionals Network holds monthly luncheons & quarterly socials. They also organize an annual community service project. This a great opportunity for young professionals to get involved with their community!

KICKSTART Workshops for new members or a refresher for current members on available benefits available through membership. This workshop also includes hands-on business directory training.

EDUCATION The Chamber provides education training on topics that are important to business owners. Topics will vary on the need from our members. We partner with 2021-2022 Grants Pass & Josephine County Profile

the Small Business Development Center, BBSI, and other business partners to provide these trainings. The Chamber partners with BBSI and The Boardroom to bring our members a series of educational classes “Helping Business Succeed- Employment Law Series”. These are a quarterly class that covers the most current issues facing employers. Sean Ray from Barran Liebman Attorneys presents in a professional and fun environment.

Committees AMBASSADORS The Ambassadors are the oldest and largest standing committee of the Grants Pass & Josephine County Chamber of Commerce. Ambassadors serve as the welcoming committee for the chamber. Ambassadors are goodwill representatives, or the public relations arm of the organization that works for business and community interests in Josephine County. This fun group of business owners dedicate themselves to serving the entire Chamber membership by promoting the Chamber’s message and mission to fellow business professionals with our community. Committee members act as hosts at Business for Breakfast (Greeters) Business after Hours, Ribbon Cuttings, Ground Breaking Ceremonies and assist at Chamber functions and special events. With the funds that they earn from projects provide scholarships to students interested in business education.

BUSINESS RETENTION & EXPANSION Most new jobs and investment in a community are created by existing companies. As an economic development strategy, the return on the investment of human and financial resources on local businesses is greater than when invested on prospective new businesses. Plus, new business recruitment is made easier when there is a happy and healthy local business climate and existing firms become ambassadors for the community.

The purpose of BR&E is to help existing local businesses grow, expand and overcome obstacles. Formal face-to-face business surveys are conducted every three years to gather vital information to provide assistance to local firms. The following two years after the survey the chamber implements symposiums, forums and classes to help in the areas that businesses need at that current time.

Annual Events/Programs LEMONADE DAY Lemonade Day is a fun, experiential program that teaches youth how to start, own and operate their very own business - a lemonade stand. This year Grants Pass is a participating city for the first time. Youth have the opportunity to experience entrepreneurship by setting up their business during our community-wide Lemonade Day in August.

AWARDS BANQUET Annually we hold our Awards Banquet to celebrate business. We look back at the accomplishments for the previous year, our goals for the upcoming year, and to present the business award winners. It is an evening to honor local businesses and organizations as well as personal contributions to the community.

BUSINESS BINGO Business Bingo is a shop local campaign that offers an opportunity for the entire community to engage in a fun promotion that showcases our community. Each square has a task that includes purchasing an item made locally, visiting a local historical site, touring a gallery, showing us your favorite store front, and more. Shop local.

As the key regional provider of entrepreneurial and business development services, the RCC Small Business Development Center plays a vital role in Southern Oregon’s economic development by assisting business owners in every stage of the business life cycle. Since 1984, the RCC SBDC has assisted thousands of emerging and growing businesses by providing the professional expertise, tools, and information necessary to make sound business decisions in a complex and ever-changing marketplace. Clients are comprised of all types of businesses from start-up to well-established, from small to medium, with 1 500 employees and up to $10 million in sales revenue.

For over 30 years, the center’s knowledgeable business advisors have worked hand-inhand with emerging and growing businesses of every make and size, providing professional expertise, tools, and essential information needed to make sound business decisions in a complex and ever-changing marketplace. Core business advising services include business startup and growth, business planning, access to capital, financial management, human resources, marketing, sales, technology, and customer service. Business advising has always been provided free of charge. In 2020, over 540 existing businesses and entrepreneurs received services which resulted in the creation of 25 new businesses, 64 new jobs, and over $77 million in capital investments.

The RCC SBDC also offers a wide variety of affordable short-term business courses, including a 9-month Small Business Management Program, courses in business start-up, creating business plans, financial management, Excel, QuickBooks, human resources, customer service, marketing, social media, and instructor led CCB pre-licensing. All RCC SBDC classes qualify for CCB and LCB continuing education credits.

Grants Pass, a Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) since 2015, has ranked in the top 25 out of 200 best small cities by the Milken Institute for the past 3 years. Many businesses are headquartered here in Grants Pass such as Dutch Bros Coffee, the largest privately held drive-through coffee chain in the United States; AllCare Health, one of the top Coordinated Care Organizations (CCO) in Oregon with 295 employees; OOGP, the largest Ophthalmic Distributors and Buying Groups in the Nation; Hellgate Jetboat Excursions, a family run business since 1959 with visitors from all over the world enjoying the Wild and Scenic Rogue River experience and Fire Mountain Gems, another grassroot family owned business since 1973 with over 300 employees. Millennials are returning home to raise their children and start their own businesses. Artist, Small-Scale Manufacturers and Entrepreneurs are discovering all that Grants Pass and Josephine County have to offer. The City is poised for growth and new business development. To meet the demand, an Urban Renewal Agency was formed in 2016. The Urban Renewal Agency assists in funding areas in the City that are underdeveloped, providing improvement to public spaces, and helping to minimize obstacles to development. Incentives for businesses include the Grants Pass Urban Growth Boundary Enterprise Zone; System Development Charge Incentives for Small Business, Nonprofits and Traded Sector Businesses; Vertical Housing Development Program; Building Façade Matching Grant Program and Light the Storefronts Matching Grant Program. Rogue Community College 50th Anniversary In the late 1960s, a small group of community leaders banded together with a shared vision for the future: a community college in Grants Pass. At the time, local unemployment was twice the statewide average and few local high school students went to college. Today, Rogue Community College serves more than 11,000 students each year through a variety of programs that include driver education and just-for-fun community education classes as well as GED preparation, workforce training programs and two-year transfer degrees that pave the way to university studies. Throughout the 2020-21 school year, Rogue Community College celebrates its 50th anniversary of providing affordable, quality higher education to help students achieve their goals and support the vitality of our Southern Oregon communities. An economic impact study found the college generates a significant return on investment to students, taxpayers and society. College operations added $45.4 million in income to the regional economy in FY 2018-19, the study found. Over the past 50 years, students have studied at RCC and entered or re-entered the workforce with newly acquired knowledge and skills. Today, thousands of these former students are employed in Josephine and Jackson counties, resulting in a net impact of $306.2 million in the regional economy in FY 2018-19. The college has impressed from the start. Approved by Josephine County voters in November 1970, RCC opened its doors in the fall of 1971 to 460 fulltime equivalent students (FTE), defying the expectations of skeptical state officials who predicted the college could not enroll more than 300 FTE. Now serving both Josephine and Jackson counties, RCC’s annual enrollment is nearly 4,000 FTE. Including both credit and non-credit students, about 11,400 people learn at RCC each year. RCC has an open admission process, which means any student with high school diploma or GED certificate has the opportunity to seek higher education, as well as high school students enrolled in dual-credit courses. Three-fourths of RCC students are ages 18 to 34. At least one-third are first-generation college students. And approximately half receive the Pell Grant, a federal subsidy that helps eligible low-income students pay for college expenses. It’s fun to look back at how the college has changed over the years. Early course offerings include forest industries, horseshoeing and «basic slide rule.” Today, RCC offers two-year transfer degrees as well as degrees and short-term certificates in career and technical education (CTE) fields like automotive technology, electronics technology, computer programming and cybersecurity. The college’s original campus was established at a former Job Corps camp on Redwood Highway just west of Grants Pass. Today, that site is called the Redwood Campus. RCC has grown to include the Riverside Campus in downtown Medford and Table Rock Campus in White City. While many original Job Corps buildings are still in use, the Redwood Campus continues to evolve. The Deschutes Building, built in 1984 to house a gunsmithing program, was completely renovated in 2019 to create a modern art instruction space and construction of a new 17,200-square-foot science center broke ground in April 2021.

CAVE JUNCTION Cave Junction is located in a beautiful, rurally isolated valley of Oregon’s Siskiyou Mountains, surrounded by three wilderness areas, botanical areas, and National Forest Land offering high-quality hiking, bicycling, and golfing opportunities. Cave Junction, “Gateway to the Oregon Caves”, is host to the Oregon Caves National Monument and Preserve. In 1856, the name Josephine was adopted as the name of the county and remains the only county in Oregon to be named after a woman. Local history is found at the Kerbyville Museum, Historic Laurel Cemetery, and the Siskiyou Smokejumper Museum, a National Historic Site. Caveman History On your way to Grants Pass off I-5, you will be greeted by the giant Caveman standing 17 ft tall guarding the Grants Pass & Josephine County Chamber of Commerce. The Caveman was built in 1971 by the Grants Pass Caveman club. On July 4, 2004 the caveman was vandalized severely damaging part of his body. Local business owner, John Stripling paid to have the damages repaired. Today, the Caveman still stands proudly in the Chamber of Commerce lawn greeting thousands of visitors. Cavemen are a huge part of Grants Pass history. Local businessmen created the Caveman Club in 1922 to boost awareness of Grants Pass. They downed animal furs and ceremonial caveman clubs welcoming visitors to our area. They even welcomed visiting dignitaries John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan. They are going strong today and will see them present at major events in Grants Pass! The caveman is also the current mascot of Grants Pass High School. If you want to be a part of the Caveman, be sure to stop by the Grants Pass & Josephine County Chamber of Commerce to take a picture with the statue or pick up “Stanley” at the office to take on all of your adventures!
